- 0:45So why is your money always gone by now?
- 0:48Pay later is everywhere.
- 0:50And it's changing how we spend in ways most people never even notice.
- 0:55But today we're going to pull back the curtain.
- 0:57What feels free is actually a trick, and I'm going to give you a test whether it's safe or a trap.
- 1:04So stay with me today and and let's look at what's really going on at checkout.
- 1:17Hello and welcome to Financially Confident Christian.
- 1:20I'm your guide, Ralph Estep Jr.
- 1:22And I just want to thank you for joining me today.
- 1:25Now, today we got a great listener question of something that's going on all around us.
- 1:30The that buy now, pay here later.
- 1:32If you've done any online shopping, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
- 1:37Hey, four easy payments, no interest, billed right to your credit card, and people are using it constantly.
- 1:45And what this lady said is money is always spoken for.
- 1:49And she's asking, Ralph, is that a problem?
- 1:52I'm going to tell you right now, these things are designed to feel painless, but it's almost like cuts.
- 1:57It's like death by a thousand cuts.
- 2:00Now, if you've got a question for this show just like this one, I would love to answer it.
- 2:04You can go to financiallyconfidentchristian.com/question We'll put a link in the show notes, but I want to hear from you.
- 2:12Financiallyconfidentchristian.com/question All right, here's today's listener question.
- 2:18Hi, Ralph, I need an honest gut check.
- 2:22Over the last year, I've started using those buy now, pay here later plans for almost everything, clothes, electronics, even groceries.
- 2:30One time.
- 2:30It's so easy, Ralph, Four payments, no interest, and it barely feels like spending.
- 2:36But here's the thing.
- 2:38I looked at my bank account the other day and I have like six different little payments coming out on different days to different companies.
- 2:45I genuinely lost track of how much I actually owe across all of them.
- 2:49Now, Ralph, individually, they're small.
- 2:51Together, I think it's more than I realized.
- 2:54It never felt like debt because there's no interest and it's just a few payments.
- 2:59But now I'm worried that I've been fooling myself.
- 3:03Is this actually hurting me and how do I get a handle on it?
- 3:08Ralph, thanks for being straight with me.
- 3:10Well, the thing you need to know about me is I'm always going to be straight with you.
- 3:15And these things are designed to trip you up because they're all about making you make a spending decision that's painless.
- 3:23But here's the thing I've learned over 30 years working with people.
- 3:27Painless spending is dangerous, and people are losing track of all of them.
- 3:32So today, I want to help you build clarity and a rule for how to use these effectively.
- 3:37I'm not saying they're bad things.
- 3:39I'm just saying that we need to be clear and we need to have a rule to use them.
- 3:45So let's start with this.
- 3:46You got to see the whole picture first.
- 3:49There's danger in invisibility.
- 3:52So first thing I want to encourage everyone to do, if you're doing these, list every single plan, the who, the how much and which dates.
- 4:01Now you might be saying, ralph, why are you doing that?
- 4:03Because here's the thing.
- 4:04You need to understand that total is actually debt.
- 4:09It might not feel like.
- 4:10It might not feel like a credit card, but that combined total shocks a lot of people.
- 4:15But you've got to add it up to manage it.
- 4:18Because six small debts you've lost track of are still one big debt.
- 4:23But now we got to go into the psychology of this, why it doesn't feel like spending.
- 4:29And that's the whole point.
- 4:30This is why retailers doing it, because what they've done, and they've been masters of it, they've split the pain from the purchase, they split the cost, and they encourage you to spend more.
- 4:41Because you just think about it, it's like, well, I don't have the money right now, but if I can do it in four payments, hey, I can make this work.
- 4:49It makes you buy what you would have skipped if you didn't have the money.
- 4:53And just because there's no interest doesn't mean there's no cost.
- 4:57So you got to see it and you got to take control of it.
- 5:02It's not free just because the pain is delayed.
- 5:04There's still pain in this.
- 5:06So let's talk about the real teeth.
- 5:08A lot of people don't talk about this.
- 5:11The real teeth in this is late fees.
- 5:13And the pile up of these, this is where it really bites those late fees.
- 5:18Yeah, Maybe there's no interest, but miss a payment, man, they whale you with late fees.
- 5:23The other problem is if you get a lot of these, it overlaps and then all of a sudden your account goes overdrawn.
- 5:29Because I didn't think about that.
- 5:30And here's the thing.
- 5:31A lot of people don't know.
- 5:32Some of these are actually reporting to the credit bureaus now.
- 5:37And if you have a tight week and all of these things hit at once.
- 5:41That is a problem that just cascades like dominoes and they pile up.
- 5:45Yeah, there's no interest.
- 5:47The trap isn't the interest, it's the pile up you didn't see coming.
- 5:52And I promised you one simple test before you click.
- 5:54And here it is.
- 5:56Here's my simple test.
- 5:57This will solve the problem.
- 5:59If you can't buy it today with money that you have, you can't afford it.
- 6:05It's really that simple.
- 6:06If you get one of these options where it says buy now, pay later.
- 6:10If you can't pay for it right now, you can't afford it.
- 6:15Just because it's convenient doesn't mean it's affordable.
- 6:17People don't understand that.
- 6:20It really gets into a discussion of needs versus wants.
- 6:24If it's something you need and the cash is there, then by all means, use this.
- 6:29I think it's.
- 6:30I use these personally.
- 6:31I think they're great.
- 6:32But you got to have a mindset of if I could pay this off today, I could.
- 6:36So I'm going to take the value of what they're offering me.
- 6:39Use their money for free.
- 6:41My wife and I have this conversation all the time.
- 6:43Use their money for free, but know what you're getting into.
- 6:47If it's a want, you don't have the cash.
- 6:49Wait, big red stop sign.
- 6:52That one question solves it.
- 6:54It filters this whole thing.
- 6:56If you can't buy it today, you can't afford it in four payments either.
- 7:00And I know that stings a little bit, but it's the truth.
- 7:04It's truth with love today.
- 7:05If you can't buy it today with cash that you have, you can't afford it.
- 7:10Even if it's four, six, eight or two years worth of payments.
- 7:14But now maybe you found yourself like this listener.
- 7:16You're already here.
- 7:17What you've got to do is you got to focus on paying down the stack and simplifying your life.
- 7:23Clear that stack, make a list of those things, pay the smallest one off first and don't do any new ones.
- 7:30And instead of doing this, listen, one of the things you can do is build sinking funds.
- 7:34If you need clothing, if you need those type of things, build some sinking funds.
- 7:39Reduce those streams.
- 7:41Because once you reduce those streams, you're gonna have farther, fewer slip ups.
- 7:44You're not going to get nailed with those payments and those overdrafts.
- 7:48Be intentional about this.
- 7:49You can't set this on autopilot.
- 7:52This is a tool that you can use on Purpose or it will use you on autopilot.
- 7:59Now I want to go a little deeper because you asked me for an honest gut check.
- 8:02Listen, I think I've been a little bit more honest than I usually am.
- 8:06And I love the fact that you realize you weren't fooling yourself and you were brave enough to look at that.
- 8:12That honesty that you took is the first and the hardest step.
- 8:17And you've already done it.
- 8:18Now here's what our fate doesn't promises us.
- 8:21It doesn't promise that marketing is going to stop being clever.
- 8:24These folks in marketing are paid to make you spe.
- 8:28Do you understand that?
- 8:29That's their goal.
- 8:31And it doesn't promise that spending will ever feel hard the way it should.
- 8:36And it doesn't promise you'll never be tempted by an easy click.
- 8:40Those temptations are common to me.
- 8:42It talks about that in the Bible, but God also gives us a way out of that.
- 8:47Here's what our faith does.
- 8:48Promises us.
- 8:50God offers you a spirit of self control.
- 8:52I think a lot of people lose trade of lose track of that.
- 8:56God is giving you that.
- 8:58That's self control.
- 8:59It's not a burden.
- 9:00It's a gift that sets you free.
- 9:04Some of the things that God talks about are power, love and self control.
- 9:08It protects your peace.
- 9:10And even when you have to take that test and say, rafa, I really don't have the money for that, every no that you say is actually a yes to your freedom.
- 9:20You're being led by wisdom, not by some button that you click.
- 9:25So take back the click today.
- 9:26Spend on purpose, be intentional with a free and steady hand.
- 9:30And love self control.
- 9:32Be the gift it was meant to be.
- 9:35I just want to encourage you today.
- 9:37Here's your win for today.
- 9:39Take an honest look at what you're doing.
- 9:41Awareness is the battle and that autopilot will get you in trouble.
- 9:46So today, list every single plan and total it.
- 9:49Check your apps, check the statements.
- 9:51That's the other thing about these.
- 9:52I mean, they make them tricky.
- 9:53You got to go in 12 different places to find it.
- 9:55But know who, how much and the due dates and give you that grand total.
- 10:00Bring it into the light today because it stays in power when it's hidden.
- 10:06Well, let's get today's Bible verse.
- 10:07It comes to us from second Timothy, chapter one, verse seven.
- 10:10It says, for God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, of love.
- 10:18And that last one we talked about so much today, self discipline.
- 10:23And these buy now, pay later.
- 10:25Bypass that discipline but that discipline is already programmed into you.
- 10:30It's something that God gave you.
- 10:31It's already yours.
- 10:32You're not powerless at checkout.
- 10:35You just have to stay in that discipline as you go through this.
- 10:40How about we pray together right now?
- 10:42Heavenly Father, I bring before you someone who took an honest look at their spending and they want to do better, Lord.
- 10:49Now they're not in crisis, they're just seeking wisdom before things get away from them.
- 10:53And Lord, I know, you, Honor, that you want us to be good stewards of what you've given us.
- 10:58So today, Lord, I ask that you would help them find clarity on the full picture of what they're doing.
- 11:03Strengthen that self control that you've given us, Lord.
- 11:06Give them the wisdom to pay it down and to simplify their life and guard those painless pulls that all of us feel and give us freedom to do on purpose spending.
- 11:17And we ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 11:22Today I've given you clarity and a simple rule.
- 11:25Remember, if you hear nothing else, autopilot's the enemy, it's not the tool.
- 11:30So see it all add up, every plan.
- 11:33That painless spending isn't free.
- 11:37It's got teeth, that's got fees and the pile up.
- 11:40And remember today's test, if you can't afford it today, don't buy it.
- 11:46So pay those down and use those with a purpose.
- 11:49Again, I'm not saying they're bad plans.
- 11:51I use them myself.
- 11:53But know what you're getting into and have the money to pay it.
- 11:57Now, maybe you were dealing with a situation similar to this.
- 12:00You just need a little encouragement.
- 12:02Or maybe you want to share a triumph that you had.
- 12:05I love to hear that as well.
- 12:06You can reach me by voicemail by going to financiallyconfidentchristian.com/voicemail we'll put a link right in the show notes.
- 12:14But listen, it doesn't have to be a question.
- 12:15It could be Ralph, here's something I did that worked for me.
- 12:18I'd love to share that with the audience again.
- 12:21That's financiallyconfidentchristian.com/voicemail thank you so much for joining me today.
- 12:27I want to encourage you as I always do, stay financially savvy, God bless you and you have a truly great day.
