- 0:01Speaker 1: In my industry, quite often the backlash isn't from the men,
- 0:06Speaker 1: it's from the wives or girlfriends who are at home.
- 0:10Speaker 1: So me existing as a woman can sometimes make people
- 0:15Speaker 1: feel uncomfortable. So although I always thought like if I
- 0:21Speaker 1: dress myself down and I make myself as like ugly
- 0:26Speaker 1: and then other women hopefully won't feel threatened that I'm
- 0:30Speaker 1: in the same space as their partners. Like these people
- 0:32Speaker 1: are like brothers to me. Like often I'll be like,
- 0:35Speaker 1: what does she even say? Like, what do you see
- 0:38Speaker 1: in this man? Like, you know, they're my mates or
- 0:41Speaker 1: like they're my uncles or like, like grandpa figures.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I don't want anything more from them other than they're
- 0:48Speaker 1: just like a mentor or a friend. And I've had
- 0:51Speaker 1: people who have had to ring me and be like,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'm so sorry. I have to unfollow you on social
- 0:55Speaker 1: media because my partner's insecure that I follow you and
- 0:58Speaker 1: I'm like wow it's like you know and they're like
- 1:03Speaker 1: yeah and like I'm happy to go have a coffee
- 1:06Speaker 1: with her like do we want to catch up like
- 1:08Speaker 1: you're my mate like what and but that no woman
- 1:12Speaker 1: would say oh you need to unfollow your male colleague
- 1:15Speaker 1: because you following him makes me uncomfortable like I've never
- 1:18Speaker 1: done anything wrong and so that's been a really tough
- 1:21Speaker 1: part of my career as well with like um You know,
- 1:27Speaker 1: there was a period of time where I did, I
- 1:30Speaker 1: don't want to give too much away, but like I
- 1:32Speaker 1: was doing a season of something and one of my colleagues,
- 1:38Speaker 1: his wife was insecure that I was in the same
- 1:41Speaker 1: crew as him. Again, that he was just somewhat like
- 1:45Speaker 1: we were in a big group chat and we'd always
- 1:46Speaker 1: just be like talking about what we were doing within that,
- 1:50Speaker 1: like a load here or there or like, oh, yeah,
- 1:53Speaker 1: this farmer needs us to pick this up. And I'd
- 1:55Speaker 1: always just double tap like, yep, no worries, like I've
- 1:57Speaker 1: acknowledged it. But that'd come up through as a love heart, right? Wow. Right?
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Then I got told that I was no longer allowed
- 2:05Speaker 1: to put love hearts in the group chat because it's inappropriate.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I had to do thumbs up. And I was like,
- 2:13Speaker 1: but everyone knows that I'm all about love hearts and
- 2:16Speaker 1: rainbows and pink stuff. Like this is not inappropriate. So
- 2:20Speaker 1: I rang my partner bawling my eyes out and like
- 2:23Speaker 1: talked to all my guy mates who I trust and
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm like, Have I, because I always want to acknowledge that.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Have I done something wrong? Do I need, I look
- 2:29Speaker 1: internally first. Have I overstepped the mark? Did I, you know,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and my partner's like, if anyone needs to be insecure,
- 2:37Speaker 1: it's me, like him, because I'm living in a house
- 2:40Speaker 1: full of men on the other side of the country.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And he goes, but you've never, ever given me one
- 2:45Speaker 1: moment to feel insecure. So you don't have anything to
- 2:48Speaker 1: apologize for. So that's one part, a hard part of
- 2:53Speaker 1: being a woman in, industry is that when you are
- 2:56Speaker 1: a minority sometimes your existence makes people feel uncomfortable and
- 2:59Speaker 1: quite often it's got nothing to do with men no
- 3:01Speaker 1: one's done anything inappropriate it's a woman at home who
- 3:04Speaker 1: gets in her head thinking that things could be happening
- 3:07Speaker 1: um out there and quite often those women are the
- 3:10Speaker 1: ones that are actually playing up so if they're just
- 3:14Speaker 1: yeah wow I've gone on but it's it is a
- 3:17Speaker 1: reality of sometimes being a minority.
- 3:20Speaker 2: As well Do you find it like hard to have
- 3:24Speaker 2: female friendships?
- 3:26Speaker 1: No, I love my friends. No, I love my female.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Like I love my girls. I'm a girl's girl. Love
- 3:32Speaker 1: my girls. There's just, and that's why I say to
- 3:35Speaker 1: all these men, let's all go out for dinner. Bring
- 3:37Speaker 1: your wives along and let me meet them. Like they will,
- 3:39Speaker 1: as soon as they meet me, they'll know that there's
- 3:41Speaker 1: no threat here. Like, you know, but yeah, no, I'm
- 3:46Speaker 1: a girl's girl for sure. Like I've got beautiful girl friendships.
- 3:49Speaker 1: All my besties are girls and Unfortunately, we're just all
- 3:52Speaker 1: scattered all around the world. So I don't really have
- 3:55Speaker 1: many friends right here where I live now. But yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 1: I don't have any issue with female friendships.
- 4:02Speaker 2: You know, another thing I want to ask you is
- 4:04Speaker 2: when you're in your truck, when you are trucking and
- 4:08Speaker 2: you're traveling and probably a lot of times alone, I'm assuming,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you got a lot of time to think and ponder
- 4:17Speaker 2: problems you may be having or dreams you have or
- 4:21Speaker 2: people in your life I know for me I don't
- 4:28Speaker 2: I hate silence it's something I'm trying to grow in
- 4:31Speaker 2: to not have noise in the background but I just
- 4:34Speaker 2: get really anxious and I my thoughts crowd and I
- 4:37Speaker 2: find it very overwhelming um so I use noise to
- 4:42Speaker 2: kind of try to stir up the pot so that
- 4:46Speaker 2: they can't really connect all the way but I wanted
- 4:49Speaker 2: to ask you like when you're on the road do
- 4:52Speaker 2: you ever have like some very encouraging or like thoughtful
- 4:58Speaker 2: times when you're thinking about something or like has there
- 5:00Speaker 2: been a time in your life when you found that
- 5:03Speaker 2: a really long truck ride was actually really helpful for
- 5:05Speaker 2: something you were going through oh my god it's the.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Best um so you can have two very different you
- 5:14Speaker 1: can be the same human being and have two very
- 5:17Speaker 1: different experience depending on where your brain's at so say
- 5:21Speaker 1: We're going to start with the negative first. Say you
- 5:23Speaker 1: have been cheated on by a boyfriend, been there, done that.
- 5:28Speaker 1: You go trucking. You will ruminate in every possibility, every
- 5:34Speaker 1: detail of that, and it can be an awful, awful existence.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You can get very dark, right? And you can isolate.
- 5:44Speaker 1: So you could be like, I'm turning my phone off
- 5:46Speaker 1: and I'm not reaching out to anyone or I'm dark.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I know that there's services out there, but I don't
- 5:51Speaker 1: want to reach out because I want to just like
- 5:53Speaker 1: get dark with this and see how far this could go.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:56Speaker 1: That's very rare. Very rare for me.
