- 0:00We're back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Husky's next up with Georgetown
- 0:04at the Excel Center eleven thirty pre game at twelve o'clock the tip the Yukon
- 0:08Sports Network and Dan Hurley with us UH coach. We talked about the start
- 0:13you had against Xavier, and I think you were mentioning this. The three
- 0:16point percentages for you kind of haven't been you know, out of this world.
- 0:20But you went eleven for twenty four the last night against Xavier. What
- 0:25gets you know, what gets you going in that direction? Obviously the ball
- 0:28goes in the basket, but you know, you don't have clinging to kind
- 0:32of you know, open things up on the perimeter with you know, dumping
- 0:35balls into him. So, you know, how do you see this unfolding?
- 0:39Because it looks like the team's starting to shoot better from three now.
- 0:42Yeah, I mean I think when a it's just different with different players.
- 0:45I think when Alex, it's been mental, you know, I think he
- 0:49uh, you know, and some players heat up as the season goes on.
- 0:55I think you saw it from Alex last year, just being a second
- 1:00and a half of the year player where he really takes it up a notch.
- 1:03And I think there's players that just get more comfortable as the season goes
- 1:06on, more confident, you know. And then like even Alex just looking
- 1:11at Jordan last year, like soft the beginning of sophomore year Jordans compared to
- 1:18you know, end of sophomore year Jordan's. It's a big difference once they
- 1:23get later into their career, especially year two. And I think with you
- 1:29know, with Tristan, I think I think we got stops last night,
- 1:33and he got some good threes in transition. I think his teammates screened for
- 1:37him well and got him some good looks from three, you know. And
- 1:41and Cam is Cam as a shooter, and Hassan Dire has worked on his
- 1:47shot a lot. He changed the shot, changed the trajectory of a shot.
- 1:52You know, he decreased some of his arc on a shot last year
- 1:56was like outrageous. He was shooting like a true helium ball. And you
- 2:01know, he just he made a subtle adjustment which is uh, you know,
- 2:06created a softer shot in a shot that we're all more confident in.
- 2:09Yeah. Three three is made by Caravan against Xavier. Three of seven for
- 2:14Tristan, And let's see three of five by Cam two for two for Hassan
- 2:21Duero Newton. You know, we talked about this in the pregame. Hadn't
- 2:24been shooting it well in Big East play, and you know it was five
- 2:28for sixteen in this game against Xavier. But I thought he got off to
- 2:31a nice start and I thought that really mattered because just for him and also
- 2:36for the team. How important is that. Do you think for Tristan to
- 2:38start getting in a groove early in these games? Yeah, I think it's
- 2:43the residual effect. It's like, you know, you know, the acambo
- 2:46of Adama and Donovan last year, you know, created it just it puts
- 2:53so much pressure or takes so much pressure off of our team offensively endatively,
- 3:00with with with with what they do at the front of the rim, the
- 3:02paint pressure at both ends, and you know Donovan being out, you know,
- 3:08it affects the quality of shots that we get. Uh, it affects
- 3:12our defense, It affects second chance opportunities. It you know, it just
- 3:15puts more pressure on everybody. And I think, you know Tristan, you
- 3:22know, being going from maybe last year, he might have been the fourth
- 3:25or fifth guy on the scouting report this year. Now he's the first guy,
- 3:30maybe first or second guy showing up on Player of the Year lists and
- 3:35all these different things. Is it. Uh, it's just a different level
- 3:38of attention and detail with scouting that you've got to deal with. And I
- 3:43think he took a step in in in a great direction in the second half
- 3:47of Butler. I think, you know, his trust in the system and
- 3:52his level of engagement was very, very high in the in the behavior game
- 3:58game. Uh So, I think I think that he found some things there.
- 4:03Yeah, Dan Hurley with us on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show Mike
- 4:06Crispino here at Butler, Newton had seventeen points. I love that he got
- 4:13to the line thirteen times, made ten of those. So even though we
- 4:15went three for twelve in that game, only made one three, he still
- 4:18found ways to get to that, you know, sixteen point averages. Where
- 4:23he is and you know, he's an interesting character. I think he's kind
- 4:28of a quiet guy. You know him better obviously, But what's the key
- 4:30to Newton in terms of his psychology and playing at this level because he never
- 4:35played, you know, at Yukon level when East Carolina they were always struggling
- 4:40to win games here. I mean, you're expected to win almost every night.
- 4:44So it's different for him. Yeah, and it's it's different when you,
- 4:46you know, when when you don't have it. Andre Jackson, at
- 4:50Jordan Hawkins and an Adama Snogo that those guys, you know, they were
- 4:57the driving force and now we need Tristan the driving force. And if you've
- 5:01never had to do that in your career, it's it's it's it's a heavy
- 5:05burden, you know. And for you know, for Tristan, it's,
- 5:11uh, he's got a chance to have a two year run at you come
- 5:15uh with the position he's put himself in, is you know, to to
- 5:20have as good a two year run as almost anyone's had, uh in terms
- 5:25of what he can accomplish as a team and as an individual. So you
- 5:29know, you obviously you make him aware of that to keep him motivated.
- 5:31It's human nature to uh uh to feel like, you know, a really
- 5:38really high level of success is enough. It should never be enough. You
- 5:42should always obsess over more. The goalpost should always be moving for you.
- 5:47And we're just trying to get him to buy into that mindset. And then
- 5:51really just as a from a basketball standpoint man, It's like he's at his
- 5:56best when he's filling the statue and truly playing like a two way player.
- 6:01High you know, rebounding the ball, high assists, you know, shooting
- 6:06good threes, attacking the paid two way player. You know, when he's
- 6:11doing those things as a six' five, you know point guard's he's one
- 6:15of the better guards out there. Yeah. Sixteen points for Newton in the
- 6:19Zaber game, eleven assists, only two turnovers. Yukon coach twenty seven assists,
- 6:26more than an eighty game on the season so far. I looked up
- 6:30and I'm like, wow, I didn't realize there were that many assists.
- 6:33You know, sharing the ball is one thing, but able to get everybody
- 6:36involved and assist on all those baskets. I mean twenty seven of the thirty
- 6:43one baskets were assisted on. That had to be. I had to make
- 6:46you feel good as a coaching staff. Yeah, I think it's you know,
- 6:51we pride ourselves by trying to create scenarios, you know, through player
- 6:59movement, ball movement, excellent screening, trying to get in a situation where
- 7:03we could get you know, two defenders on ball as much as possible,
- 7:08and uh, you know, and and and share the ball with a very
- 7:13capable teammate. You know, I think we have a lot of different elements
- 7:16to what we do on offense. I don't think we're reliant on one player,
- 7:24uh to save us a ball us out in any one game. And
- 7:27I think that you know, allows you to to win a lot of games
- 7:30when uh, you know, when it could be any number of players that
- 7:32could step up and and you're truly playing team basketball. And some nights you
- 7:39got to play five guards, which you had to do against Xaviery. We'll
- 7:42talk about that, and uh, maybe the future boxing career of Alex Caravan
- 7:46as he took a we could shot in Cincinnati and able to come back and
- 7:49help the team win the game. We're continuing with the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches
