Transcript
- 0:47Hey, y'all, welcome to today's show. I apologize that it's been so
- 1:03many days since I did my last podcasts. You know, I intended to
- 1:08do an entire series on Catholic teachings on the Blessed Virgin Mary last week.
- 1:14But while I was doing my podcast last Tuesday, I began sneezing. I
- 1:21edited all that out. You know, I've got my cough button here,
- 1:23I got everything in need. But by Wednesday morning, I was really sick,
- 1:30bad head cold, Still sick, but things have subsided enough that I
- 1:36can get back to doing the podcast and pick up where I left off.
- 1:41So my voice sound may sound a little funny, and there may be a
- 1:45couple of odd gaps as I hit the Paul's button to cough or sneeze or
- 1:49bloil my nose or something, but there is, Yeah, there's something going
- 1:53around. I don't know what it is. You know, people, oddly
- 1:56enough, people think that because I'm an herbalist, I must never get sick.
- 2:00Well, that's actually the reason I study herbal medicine is because I do
- 2:05get sick, and I'll have the herbs I need rather than go sit in
- 2:08a doctor's office to be ignored and abused for a few hours and sent home
- 2:13with a useless prescription for an antibiotic when what I have is a viral head
- 2:20cold. Yeah, but hey, that's just me anyway. I'll try to
- 2:27avoid that topic for now. Of course, I get into that all the
- 2:30time on my Southern Appalachian Herbs podcast. And I don't think much of modern
- 2:36medicine. I don't think much of it at all, not to say it
- 2:39doesn't have its place. Sure, if I break a leg or have a
- 2:42heart attack, I'm going to a doctor. But God gave us many many
- 2:47natural herbs and well other elements actually that we can use to cure our elements,
- 2:53and actually everything that we need can be found in nature. We just
- 2:59have to learn how to use it. This is my opinion. I'm not
- 3:00offering any official medical advice, and that statement has not been vetted or guaranteed
- 3:07or endorsed by the FDA or anything like that, American Medical Association or anything.
- 3:15I'm just a guy talking about stuff, an herbalists talking about herbs,
- 3:20A plant geek if you want to talk think about it that way. But
- 3:23we'll start as usual with the radio replies series. This questioner, who is
- 3:30a modernist I think probably a communist, maybe not. He does seem to
- 3:38enjoy his wealth, but he has said before that he thinks well. He's
- 3:44endorsed some which will say socialistic positions. But this is someone who actually seems
- 3:50to be rather wealthy. He says, I have no religion and I am
- 3:54well off. The poor wretches who practice religion do not seem to gain much
- 3:59by it. I think a lot of people would make that argument today.
- 4:04A lot of are you know, secular modernist people who care only about money
- 4:13and success. You know, a lot of the Hollywood and Wall Street types
- 4:15you know, certainly promote that ideology. They answered, religion is not supposed
- 4:21to be an easy road to temporal prosperity in things which death takes from those
- 4:28who have them. It is a road, not always comfortable, to never
- 4:31ending an eternal happiness. We do not expect religion to result in earthly advancement.
- 4:38If it did, men would rush to it as a good business proposition
- 4:42and offer to God a devotion quite without value. Temporal things are subject to
- 4:46the natural course of events. You are not materially well off because you have
- 4:51no religion. There are thousands who have no religion are not well off at
- 4:56all. So too, the poor are not poor because they practice religion.
- 5:00They are well to do people who also practice their religion. And if the
- 5:03poor gave up their religion, they would not suddenly become rich. Meantime,
- 5:08you prosper because of natural circumstances or naturability, or because God is giving you
- 5:13temporal rewards for such good as you do. Everyone does good to some extent.
- 5:18Sometimes for the poor, God often reserves their compensation for the next life.
- 5:25He responds, I am perfectly happy. Your kill joy religion will leave
- 5:29you feeling a dreadful fool when you find that death ends all. They respond,
- 5:36if you are perfectly happy, then you're the only one on earth who
- 5:40is. Is there absolutely nothing further you would like to have of which you
- 5:46do not yet possess? Anyway, religion is not a killed joy. One
- 5:50of the really happiest men who ever lived with Saint Francis of ASSISI born and
- 5:55bred in the Catholic spirit. The simple priest finds more joy in one Mass,
- 6:00and the least of our Catholic people in one communion. Then you have
- 6:05experienced in your whole life. Then too, I have already shown that death
- 6:11cannot end at all. If it did, the religious man would hardly be
- 6:14able to feel a fool. But if it does not, as it cannot,
- 6:17you will scarcely enjoy meeting a god whom you have consistently ignored. The
- 6:24idea that death ends all is not the result of thought, is a result
- 6:29of refusing to speak to think. Very true. Recently, that's had a
- 6:38conversation with someone Chinese, obviously raised in the Communist Party atheistic mindset, who
- 6:48would become a capitalist apparently and was making a lot of money but still rejected,
- 6:56was still fully an atheist, and I was trying to explain to her
- 7:03something. I guess it comes down to that experiential thing again. It's hard
- 7:10to explain to a person something they've never experienced, you know. I can
- 7:15tell someone food tastes salty because they know what salt tastes like. I can
- 7:21tell someone grass is green because they've seen the color of green. If if
- 7:28someone has never been confirmed into the Catholic Church and receive the Eucharist, one
- 7:34does not understand the impact that has on your life. It literally changes everything.
- 7:43I don't understand. I can far more understand an atheist or an agnostic
- 7:50or whatever. Who or even you know a Protestant or someone of a different
- 8:01who rejects Catholic teaching because they've never experienced it. I can farm better understand
- 8:09them than I can one who is Catholic who leaves the church that having been
- 8:18Protestant, you know, being a convert. I don't take it for granted,
- 8:22and I don't in any way dismiss the incredible changes that took part of
- 8:28my life once I was confirmed in the Catholic Church. I am a very
- 8:33different person and a very happy, a much happier person, and my life
- 8:39is so much richer and full of joy, even though you know, to
- 8:43most people, I don't fit the mold of what they would aspire to be.
- 8:48I'm not rich, I'm not married, I don't have kids. You
- 8:54know, I'm a self employed author and wood carver who lives in a you
- 9:00know, a cottage built in the nineteen twenties in the middle of a national
- 9:05forest, rather isolated and from many people they would look. You know,
- 9:11I drive an old, beat up pickup truck out of choice. I like
- 9:16it. I you know, that's my choice. But my contentment definitely comes
- 9:24from God, definitely was not there. Before I became Catholic, I was
- 9:31very you know, if you read my book Confirmation, Autobiography of Faith,
- 9:37you will get an idea of how painful it was to convert a lot of
- 9:41things. I went through a lot of the rejection. But that rejection and
- 9:46you know started, you know, when my parents divorced when I was five,
- 9:52and my dad went on to have another family and didn't really have anything
- 9:54to do with me again, etc. I was very angry. Like I
- 10:03said, I was self destructive. I was depressed. A lot a lot
- 10:09of people struggle with depression and anxiety, and they would be greatly helped,
- 10:16if my experience is any indication by becoming Catholic and going to confession and receiving
- 10:22the Euchist greatly helped. The anger was and the sadness and the loneliness,
- 10:33especially after two thousand and eight and the Great Recession and losing my business and
- 10:37my social status and basically all social opportunity for you know, it was a
- 10:43good ten years of not interacting in the way I had before. You know,
- 10:50I almost lost my house, I almost lost everything, and it took
- 10:56ten years to get out of debt. Were king lousy jobs, a lot
- 11:03of contract work, a lot of physical work. Worked at you know,
- 11:09someone with my education background who had been influential in politics and all that had
- 11:16I had to, you know, embrace humility to take on that work.
- 11:18And I was glad to have it. I mean, every dollar I made
- 11:22was a blessing and I came to recognize it as that. But no dating,
- 11:28you know, I was twenty four, I think, when everything fell
- 11:33apart and single and so no dating for ten years because I couldn't afford it.
- 11:37I couldn't afford to go out on a date. No you know,
- 11:41no concerts, no vacations, just hard work, head down and you know,
- 11:50a miracle God brought me out of debt and to the other side of
- 11:52that. But the the loneliness, the isolation, the anger was intense,
- 12:03absolutely intense. And praying the Rosary and going to receiving the Eucharist is what
- 12:11made the difference. And that's one of the main reasons I want to impress
- 12:16upon people, Catholics and Protestants alike, the importance of praying the Rosary.
- 12:22It is the greatest consolation next to the Eucharist you will receive in confession.
- 12:30You know, a sacrament and kind of hard to put into words if you
- 12:35haven't experienced it. So I'm going to turn back to Father Jonathan Ashley.
- 12:41He wrote this was a two part series, Theagorious Power of One Hill Mary,
- 12:48and you can find his article on the Catholicism rocks dot com website.
- 12:54It's on the blog section. You also see on my podcasts. You know,
- 12:58good place to hang out. We have a good form. Needs to
- 13:01be a lot more active. If you're listening to this, you know,
- 13:03please get involved and just start chatting. We need to get a little more
- 13:07chatty over there, bring more people in. Father actually said, our lady's
- 13:13prayer, that's the Rosary is historically traced back to the eleventh century. Hers
- 13:18then is a time tested way that the faith will have long practice that have
- 13:22long praised the trying God for his most exalted creature. Mary, the flower
- 13:28of humanity and the hope of Christians and all of humanity have recourse to her.
- 13:33That is true. Mary has actually, you know, there are many
- 13:35marrying apparitions, you know, where she's appeared to people and spoken to them,
- 13:41and several times she's appeared to Muslims, and she has promised that she
- 13:46will convert through her Muslims to Christianity, before the apocalypse, before the end
- 13:52of the world, before the Second Coming, whatever you want to call it.
- 13:54So we're not there yet. You know this is I'm actually recording this
- 13:58on nine to eleven, September eleven, and a day that still makes me
- 14:09unbelievably sad. Day changed my life. It changed everyone's wife that was there.
- 14:22Say say Helm Mary for all that were all, all those who were
- 14:24killed in the nine to eleven attacks, and all those who have died in
- 14:31the war since, and for their families, say hell' Mary, for the
- 14:35repose of their souls and for the comfort of their loved ones. And you
- 14:41know, Protestants may listen to this thing. Whoa that you can't pray for
- 14:46the dead. I don't know why you think that. Nothing in the Bible
- 14:48says not to pray for the dead. And again, if you had a
- 14:52complete Bible, you would have a Bible that contains the books, the two
- 14:56Books of Maccabee's in which we are instructed to pray for the dead. Once
- 15:01again, Martin Luther stripped those books from the Bible because he was not a
- 15:05good man. He removed from the Bible anything that disagreed with his doctrine.
- 15:13He changed the words of Jesus to say by faith alone instead of by faith
- 15:18and works. And when asked on what authority he did that, he said,
- 15:24you may tell the papists. He was a very bigoted man. I
- 15:28did it by the authority of doctor Luther, not by God, not by
- 15:33any context contextual reason in the Bible, but because he set himself up as
- 15:41his sole authority. He was an anti Christ who has led countless millions of
- 15:48people astray. Martin Luther was not a good man. Say how Mary,
- 15:54for the pose of his soul too, he trusts me he needs those prayers
- 16:00now, and I bet unless he assuming you know that he did have some
- 16:07genuine love for God and was not just pure evil, he isn't inhale and
- 16:15would profit from your prayers, even though he didn't believe that in his life.
- 16:22We pray for the soul in purgatory to help expiate their sins, to
- 16:27help them get into heaven. Also very biblical, and I've done a whole
- 16:32couple of podcasts on that as well. So if you don't understand where it
- 16:36says that in the Bible, just go and look for my podcasts on purgatory
- 16:41anyway, he says the church is not seeing her accolades without reason when it
- 16:47developed and added the second half of the Hell Mary Prayer, Holy Mary Pray
- 16:52for us centers. Now, at the hour of our death, the Lord
- 16:55gave us his mother that she might indeed be a pre eminent source of maternal
- 16:59care and welfare for all of God's children. Quoting from the Gospel John,
- 17:06now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's
- 17:08sister, Mary, the wife of Clopus, and Mary Magdalen. When Jesus
- 17:14therefore saw his mother and the disciple, whom he loved, standing by his
- 17:18mother, he said, woman, behold your son. And then he said
- 17:21to the disciple, behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took
- 17:26her and took her to his own home. So Jesus didn't say, yeah,
- 17:34John, behold your mother. He said, man, behold your mother.
- 17:40He did not say, Mary, behold your son. He said,
- 17:44woman, behold your son. These are very formal words in the dialect of
- 17:51Aramaic spoken by Jesus, said indicate that Mary was to become the mother of
- 17:56all Christians. She was the woman the new Eve, the first Eve is
- 18:02the mother to all. Right, there are our first parents, Adam and
- 18:04Eve. Mary is the new Eve, the mother to all Christians. If
- 18:11I'll say again, if we are brothers and sisters in Christ, and the
- 18:15Mother of God is blessed Virgin Mary, all brothers and sisters in Christ,
- 18:21by reason of logic, if nothing else, even if there was nothing written
- 18:26in the Bible, all brothers and sisters in Christ, have Mary as our
- 18:30spiritual mother. Saint Thomas aquinas a search that her very name is a sign
- 18:37of her status before God and men. Mary is full of grace, and
- 18:41she exceeds all the angels in the plenitude of grace. And because of this
- 18:47she is fittingly called Mary, which means enlightened in herself. With his typically
- 18:53comprehensive scope, Saint Thomas adds that this is why the Church adamantly applies a
- 19:00apropriate scriptural references of celestial bodies to her. Saint Thomas wrote, above all,
- 19:03she would enlighten others through the world, throughout the world, and for
- 19:07this reason she is compared to the sun of the moon. In other words,
- 19:11Mary is no fading flowers. Father actually says, and we have seen
- 19:15that the first half of her prayer tests and Mary's holiness and fidelity. Hell,
- 19:21Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee blessed art thou
- 19:23among the women, and blesses the fruit of thy woman. Jesuses are all
- 19:26words directly from the Bible, from the Archangel's words to her to Saint Elizabeth's
- 19:33words to her. The second half presents her petitions to God. On her
- 19:38behalf with Mary, and through her we pray to God for enlightenment, namely
- 19:44that our hearts and minds be led by the light of His grace. Pray
- 19:47for us centers. Now, she who is sinless, assist centers such as
- 19:52such is the doctrine of salvation. As the mediatrics of grace. She is
- 19:56privileged to share God's blessings with us. But Mary does so as a human
- 20:02being in no way as she divinizes. Though the Lord goes out of his
- 20:06way to emphasize to all creation how wonderful his mother is by her perfect conformity
- 20:11to himself, quoting from Luke. Because Jesus was saying these things, a
- 20:17woman the crowd called out, blessed is the mother who gave you birth and
- 20:19nurse your nurse you, he replied, blessed, Rather of those who hear
- 20:22the word of God and obey. Mary above all hurt the word of God
- 20:29and obeyed, She who has proven herself to God, is now offered by
- 20:33Him to all as a source of secure blessing. How wondrous the Lord's ways.
- 20:38And so we ask pray for us sinners now and at the hour of
- 20:41our death. Just as we ask our living relatives on earth to pray for
- 20:47us, we ask our living relatives in heaven to pray for us. He
- 20:52goes on. Perhaps the majority of us live. Perhaps the majority of us
- 20:59lives mainly in the present, wondering and worrying how to pay bills and manage
- 21:03the responsibilities, while eking out a little time for pleasantries as time slips away.
- 21:08But those who are wise about their own mortality and inherent weakness are moved
- 21:12to do more than simply live in the present. We acknowledge her favorite status,
- 21:17the Lord is with thee, and invest ourselves accordingly in prayer, in
- 21:22trusting Mary with our mortality for the grace of salvation, pleading that she extends
- 21:26her maternal protection and care. Her advice for every age is the same as
- 21:32was offered to the wine stewards at the wedding of Cana, Do whatever he
- 21:36tells you. Her collaboration with the Holy Spirit and the work of salvation has
- 21:41been shown to be more than advice, for she also doles out God's graces
- 21:45to those who requests them. We should acknowledge that she in a human way
- 21:49to prayers of humility, generosity, and fidelity. Although she is perfectly harmonized
- 21:56with God's will, Mary maintains our own freedom and dispensing graces as well.
- 22:02Sometimes it is said that she holds back the Lord and his wrath for our
- 22:06sins, and for her sake, he indulges her. Please. She who
- 22:11found favor with God, that's Luke one thirty, is then rightly granted the
- 22:15privilege of favoring those who approach God with humility and charity, and being human,
- 22:19it is natural that she also favors those who favor her. Mary extends
- 22:23special graces to all who entrusts themselves to her care, as was the Lord's
- 22:29wish when he entrusted us to her through Saint John the Evangelist. And this
- 22:33is why Catholics offers seemingly endless, endless Rosaries, meditating on the death,
- 22:41meditating on the Lord's mystery while reciting pray for us centers now at the hour
- 22:45of her death. Probably something Protestants don't know about the Rosary is, while
- 22:51we pray the Rosary, we're actually on every bead meditating basically from a scene
- 22:56from the Bible, a passage of the Gospel, an aspect of our Lord's
- 23:02life. Mary's prayer is but one of numerous ways the Church acknowledges and requests
- 23:07Our Lady's intercession. Through Nevina's vigils, groups that gathered to Falster, awareness
- 23:12of her blessings, and many other studies and devotions. Catholics take the Lord
- 23:17to his word and entrusts themselves to His Mother, calling on her in time
- 23:21of need. It is our Lady herself who has given us many of these
- 23:25means, as tradition recounts when she offered the scapular to Saint Simon Stock Although
- 23:30the Rosary remains her favorite prayer, so whenever you see the faithful Catholic,
- 23:34you will also see a devotion to Mary in the Rosary. There is a
- 23:38final prayer I wish to highlight as a personal favorite that honors our lady one
- 23:42composed by the molliculous. I love that word. I can't pronounce it very
- 23:48well, but I like it. Doctor of the Church, Saint Bernard of
- 23:51Clear the Memorari. Now I pray the memorari every single day. I recommend
- 23:59no matter what religion you are, you pray them memorari every single day.
- 24:07State your needs and petitions. In this case or nine to eleven, I'm
- 24:11going to pray this memorari for those who died in the attack, those who
- 24:18died in the wars that followed, those who were injured, and for all
- 24:22their friends, family and loved ones. You can tell. Nine eleven just
- 24:27breaks me up. I I haven't gotten over it. I hope none of
- 24:36us ever. Do remember, almost, Gracious Virgin Mary, that never was
- 24:41it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored Thy help, or
- 24:45sought their intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly into
- 24:49the Virgin of Virgins, my mother to thee. Do I come before the
- 24:53I stand sinful and sorrowful, a mother of the word incarnate, despise not
- 24:59my petitions, but in thy mercy here and answer me amen, following sign
- 25:03the Holy Spirit, I'm in Saint Bernard's praise. If Jesus flowed like honey,
- 25:07as did his love for our lady, which can be readily recognized in
- 25:11this beautiful prayer. Old gracious virgin Mother of our Lord, pray for us
- 25:15now and at the hour of our death. Name and Father and the Son
- 25:19and the Holy Spirit. Yeah, all right, y'all. Hopefully I'll be
- 25:26a tad better tomorrow, and well I'll talk to you then. Have a
- 25:33great evening. Hey, there's the Braves are playing a double header against the
- 25:38Phillies today. So if you're a baseball fan like I am, this,
- 25:44you know, as sad as this day is in many regards, what a
- 25:47great day to be a baseball fan. Uh, you know, grab a
- 25:49hot dog and some Sara kraut and onions. I like a little hot sauce,
- 25:52some mustard on their open a cold beer, and enjoy a baseball game.
- 25:56And yeah, I'd be really, really really thankful for that privilege,
- 26:07for that privilege. All right, y'all, Toddymorrow,
