- 0:04Speaker 1: You are listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source
- 0:07Speaker 1: for the best youth football coverage. Here's O.C. from the
- 0:11Speaker 1: Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Welcome back to The Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the
- 0:23Speaker 2: number one handicapper in the business. Lee Sterling of Paramount Sports,
- 0:28Speaker 2: friend of mine, friend of the show. Off to a
- 0:31Speaker 2: hot start in the college football season. Also a UFC
- 0:34Speaker 2: card this weekend and a UFC card coming to Salt
- 0:37Speaker 2: Lake City again in just a couple of weeks on
- 0:40Speaker 2: the Utah bye week. So we'll have lots to discuss
- 0:43Speaker 2: with Lee as we continue.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Big game tonight.
- 0:45Speaker 2: We'll talk about it as Lee gives us some picks here.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Lee, welcome to the show.
- 0:49Speaker 2: How are you, sir?
- 0:50Speaker 3: I am great. Going on, on average, about four and
- 0:53Speaker 3: a half, five hours sleep, but When you're winning in
- 0:55Speaker 3: footballs almost every night, it's spectacular. So let's just hit
- 1:00Speaker 3: real quick on the main fight on Saturday night. Pantoja
- 1:05Speaker 3: or Van? Which side are you going? Pantoja.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I think that the arm injury was a fluke. I
- 1:12Speaker 2: think Van is giving himself too much credit. You cause
- 1:16Speaker 2: the injury by catching the kick and pushing him back,
- 1:19Speaker 2: but that fight goes a lot differently if he stays
- 1:21Speaker 2: healthy and doesn't dislocate his elbow.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, the line was minus 200 in that fight.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Now he's catching plus 110, 115. I think he's going
- 1:32Speaker 3: to be like a snake. He's going to just slowly
- 1:35Speaker 3: just work and work and work and eventually take over
- 1:40Speaker 3: and maybe even get a submission, round three, four, or five.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Ooh, maybe a finish in the championship rounds. For that
- 1:46Speaker 2: UFC card this weekend. All right, let's talk a little
- 1:49Speaker 2: college football. Let's start with a game tonight. Big 12
- 1:52Speaker 2: implications here. Two of the powers in Texas. Texas Tech,
- 1:57Speaker 2: a lot of people think are the best team in
- 1:58Speaker 2: the conference. They haven't looked all that great as of yet. Houston,
- 2:02Speaker 2: another team that people considered maybe a dark horse. Also,
- 2:06Speaker 2: maybe some iffy stuff, but we're only two weeks in.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Texas Tech is an eight-point favorite in this game. Surprises
- 2:14Speaker 2: me that line.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Me too, but they have earned it. You've got to
- 2:19Speaker 3: give them respect in the regular season. They've dominated. I
- 2:22Speaker 3: think it's Tech, Utah, and BYU, and I think Houston
- 2:25Speaker 3: is just a little whisker behind. Now, last year, Houston
- 2:31Speaker 3: at home could not play with Tech. They lost 35-11.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Their quarterback, Connor Wegman, he got knocked out of the
- 2:38Speaker 3: game in the second quarter and never returned. But I'm
- 2:41Speaker 3: watching Tech this year, and Even though they have five sacks,
- 2:44Speaker 3: the defensive line is not the same. I mean, you're
- 2:47Speaker 3: missing Bailey. You're missing Rodriguez at linebacker. Rodriguez for the
- 2:51Speaker 3: Dolphins had almost 20 tackles last week. He is an
- 2:55Speaker 3: absolute monster. And Will Hammond's not the guy. He's a backup.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I think they're going to make a change of quarterback
- 3:01Speaker 3: maybe in this game or next week here. I think
- 3:05Speaker 3: Tech's going to win the game here, 27-24. But I
- 3:09Speaker 3: think you take the points. It wouldn't shock me if
- 3:11Speaker 3: Houston wins the game outright. Take the eight. All right.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I feel like you're confirming what I was already leaning toward,
- 3:19Speaker 2: and I always appreciate when that's the case. Lee Sterling
- 3:22Speaker 2: is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show, giving
- 3:24Speaker 2: us picks for the weekend. As we get closer to
- 3:28Speaker 2: Utah kicking off against Utah State afternoon game. This is
- 3:33Speaker 2: going to be the most talked about game nationally and
- 3:36Speaker 2: already has been this week. LSU, this line went down
- 3:39Speaker 2: to like minus one for LSU on the injury report.
- 3:46Speaker 2: It didn't last long. A lot of people were skeptical,
- 3:48Speaker 2: myself included. I think Sam Levitt was always going to
- 3:51Speaker 2: play and is going to play. LSU back to being
- 3:54Speaker 2: a three-point favorite as Lane Kiffin returns to Oxford for
- 3:57Speaker 2: the first time. LSU, Ole Miss, how does it play?
- 4:01Speaker 3: Well, how about this? The line went from three down
- 4:04Speaker 3: to about a pick-em for a second, and then oddsmakers
- 4:07Speaker 3: said not so fast. He's playing. But I'd say about 98%,
- 4:11Speaker 3: 99% chance he suits up. And I think the pressure's
- 4:17Speaker 3: on Ole Miss. I think these kids are walking around campus.
- 4:20Speaker 3: It's an absolute zoo. They started having concerts on Tuesday night,
- 4:26Speaker 3: Country Western Acts. A friend of mine's son is in
- 4:29Speaker 3: a fraternity. They're selling space on their fraternity. That's right,
- 4:35Speaker 3: on their fraternity for advertisers. I mean, this is crazy. Banners.
- 4:41Speaker 3: They're making money. I guess they're going to make a
- 4:43Speaker 3: lot of beer money. I think that that's a distraction
- 4:46Speaker 3: for the Ole Miss kids. I think LSU's going in.
- 4:48Speaker 3: This is a business trip. Not a Lane Kiffin fan,
- 4:52Speaker 3: but I think he owns a big advantage. He knows
- 4:55Speaker 3: six of the 11 defenders here on the Ole Miss team,
- 4:58Speaker 3: and two guys I think he's going to target are
- 5:00Speaker 3: number two linebacker Jalen Braxton, who was there last year,
- 5:04Speaker 3: and number 14 safety Edwin Joseph. I think Ole Miss'
- 5:09Speaker 3: offense is their best unit, but their defense has a
- 5:12Speaker 3: propensity to tire out in the third and the fourth quarter.
- 5:15Speaker 3: They have breaks in coverage, and I think they have
- 5:18Speaker 3: some weaknesses. Give me LSU in a great game. If
- 5:21Speaker 3: it's half as good as Texas and Ohio State, we're
- 5:23Speaker 3: going to get our money's worth. LSU 41-34.
- 5:29Speaker 2: All right, BYU, the hated rival of the Utes here
- 5:32Speaker 2: on the home of the Utes. They look really good.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie. They are a good team.
- 5:38Speaker 2: and they came away with an impressive win. They covered
- 5:41Speaker 2: against Arizona last week. Arizona is one of those teams
- 5:44Speaker 2: that I think is on the rise in the Big 12.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And now it's Colorado State. And Colorado State, I think,
- 5:50Speaker 2: from what we've seen of them so far, they're going
- 5:52Speaker 2: to be pretty respectable. They're going to be respectable enough,
- 5:55Speaker 2: at least, in the mid-major world. But BYU is a
- 5:58Speaker 2: big favorite here, 17-and-a-half-point favorites against the Rams, who've done
- 6:03Speaker 2: a good job of turning their opponents over. That's their
- 6:06Speaker 2: hope in this one. Can BYU cover again?
- 6:10Speaker 3: You're right, BYU. I didn't think they'd come together this quick,
- 6:14Speaker 3: but they have. A lot of people know Jim O'Rourke.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Jim O'Rourke is a very respected coach. I mean, he
- 6:19Speaker 3: could end up back at Washington. Don't be shocked if
- 6:23Speaker 3: that happens in a couple years. He built UConn into
- 6:26Speaker 3: a respectable team late last year in the bowl game.
- 6:30Speaker 3: UConn was a team you didn't want to face here.
- 6:33Speaker 3: I think BYU might be a little flacky for this game.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Colorado State's quarterback, Henji, from Oklahoma State, looks good so far.
- 6:42Speaker 3: He brought over a running back, Mel Harris, from UConn.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Kid's averaging over 13 yards per carry. He's not going
- 6:48Speaker 3: to keep that average up, but this is a kid
- 6:51Speaker 3: that knows how to run downhill. I think BYU wins 35-24,
- 6:53Speaker 3: but Colorado State covers 35. Okay, all right.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Me and you are in lockstep right now, Lee. I
- 7:01Speaker 2: don't know if I should feel nervous about that or
- 7:03Speaker 2: good about it. I'm going to stick with good right now.
- 7:06Speaker 2: We'll say best for last with Utah, Utah State. NFL
- 7:09Speaker 2: has been really interesting so far. Let's go with the
- 7:12Speaker 2: Seahawks here. The defending Super Bowl champs are 4.5-point favorites
- 7:17Speaker 2: against the lowly Cardinals. How does this game play out?
- 7:20Speaker 3: What I've seen so many times before, a quarterback comes
- 7:23Speaker 3: into a game As a backup. And teams a lot
- 7:27Speaker 3: of times have no real answer for him once they
- 7:30Speaker 3: get going. They just don't prepare for him and give
- 7:32Speaker 3: him credit. Think that Drew Locke is a capable backup,
- 7:37Speaker 3: unlike some of these other guys. But even Carson Wentz
- 7:40Speaker 3: had a good game last week. So Vikings and Seahawks here.
- 7:46Speaker 3: quarterbacks got hurt, and both those backups shown well, but
- 7:49Speaker 3: Jacoby Brissett, when he's in a rhythm, he's a good quarterback.
- 7:53Speaker 3: He can go three, four, five games in a row
- 7:55Speaker 3: and play well. Watch his tape last week against the Chargers,
- 8:00Speaker 3: spreading the ball around. They're running the ball now with love.
- 8:04Speaker 3: They've always had decent running backs. Now they have a
- 8:06Speaker 3: bell cow running back, and I just think with time
- 8:10Speaker 3: to study Drew Locke, it's going to be the different
- 8:12Speaker 3: Seattle wins in a dogfight, 24-23, but I think the
- 8:16Speaker 3: right side, take the cards.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You can hear that game right here on ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Game of the week is the Chargers, who are seven-point
- 8:25Speaker 2: favorites against the Raiders, Lee.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yep, they want to get that game for free. I'll
- 8:30Speaker 3: give them that game on me. Just call 800-400-9741. First,
- 8:32Speaker 3: five callers. I'm going to give it to them for free.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Chargers and Raiders, 800-400-9741. And What a run it's been here.
- 8:45Speaker 3: We've won all three weeks so far in the football.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You want to give us a shot? NFL, we have
- 8:51Speaker 3: what's called the Sunday Golden Ticket. Five selections, $ 75. And
- 8:57Speaker 3: last week went 4-1 there. Last year won 14 out
- 9:00Speaker 3: of 18 weeks. So five selections, $ 75 in the NFL.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Or you want to try college and NFL on our
- 9:07Speaker 3: phone service? We rate the games from 10 to 50 units,
- 9:10Speaker 3: normally $ 397 through the end of the month, through September 30th.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Use coupon code SAVE100 in the box at checkout. SAVE100,
- 9:18Speaker 3: just $ 297.
- 9:18Speaker 1: $ 297.
- 9:18Speaker 3: $ 800, $ 400, $ 9, $ 7, $ 4, $ 1, ParamountSports.com. All right.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Utah is 28-point favorites over the Little Brother. The Battle
- 9:33Speaker 2: of the Brothers, Utah State coming down, Bronco Mendenhall, he
- 9:36Speaker 2: knows this Utah team and this Utah staff and this
- 9:39Speaker 2: Utah environment pretty well. Offensive coordinator was on his staff
- 9:44Speaker 2: last year up in Logan. 28's a big number for Utah.
- 9:48Speaker 2: They've looked impressive through two weeks. Can they get it done,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and can they cover against the Aggies?
- 9:53Speaker 3: It is a big number, but I think actually Utah
- 9:56Speaker 3: State's down from last year. I think the right move
- 10:00Speaker 3: is to go, like I said, they went away from
- 10:02Speaker 3: McKay Hillstead to Grady Brostrout, so they're no worse for that.
- 10:07Speaker 3: They are really good. Bronco Mendenhall is an underdog, is
- 10:10Speaker 3: always strong. They're 7-1 against the spread as a dog, but...
- 10:16Speaker 3: I think this Utah team is different here. I think
- 10:19Speaker 3: they can handle teams like that. I think they're going
- 10:21Speaker 3: to be able to score. And then on defense, it
- 10:23Speaker 3: starts up front. I love the San Jose State transfer.
- 10:27Speaker 3: This kid, Mo, is something else in the middle of
- 10:29Speaker 3: the line here. So even in 2024, when the Utes
- 10:35Speaker 3: here were a pretty big favorite here, they still won
- 10:41Speaker 3: big here. So I think they're going to win this game.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I'm going to lay the points here. Utah, 48-17 over
- 10:49Speaker 3: Utah State. All right.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Utah to win and cover, according to Lee Sterling. And, look,
- 10:54Speaker 2: he's the best in the business. That's why we have
- 10:56Speaker 2: him on. Lee, good stuff as always. You and I
- 11:01Speaker 2: are in close accord on these picks, and so I'm
- 11:04Speaker 2: going to have to follow on the UFC ones as
- 11:08Speaker 2: well for the weekend.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Okay. Sounds good. Let's make some hay this weekend, and
- 11:14Speaker 3: everyone have a great weekend and be safe. Thanks, Lee.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Appreciate you.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Okay, see you.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Lee Sterling, best in the business. ParamountSports.com, 800-400-3741. Big thanks
- 11:27Speaker 2: to Lee for jumping on with us, as he always does. Sorry, 800-400-9741.
- 11:33Speaker 2: That's 1-800-400-9741 to get a hold of Lee and to
- 11:38Speaker 2: follow or fade whatever you prefer on those picks. For
- 11:42Speaker 2: entertainment purposes, of course, here on the Sean O'Connell Show,
