Latest / Strictly Business / The 5 o' Clock Shadow with Schalk Louw
Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the 5 o'clock shadow.
- 0:09And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Skulk Lowe, Portfolio Manager at
- 0:14PSG Wealth Old Oak Division in Cape Town.
- 0:17We didn't speak last week, Skulk,
- 0:20and you mentioned to me off-air that you'd been out of contact because there had been
- 0:26some
- 0:27glitch, some technical glitch in the place that you were.
- 0:29and you were a couple of days offline.
- 0:31And sometimes during these times that we're experiencing at the moment, that's a
- 0:36very good thing, I would imagine.
- 0:38It allows you to collect your thoughts.
- 0:40Yeah, it was the strangest feeling.
- 0:44I mean, people usually tell you, oh, it's going to be blissful.
- 0:47There's no signal.
- 0:48There's nothing there.
- 0:51And the first few hours, I must admit,
- 0:56especially in the times we're living in wars and...
- 0:59tacos and all those things um we i i found it strange i didn't know what to
- 1:06make of it and then i just switched off and um yeah it's been been in the middle
- 1:12middle of the
- 1:14crew saw
- 1:16stars as big as the moons and the moon as big as the sun it was just it was just
- 1:21fantastic the
- 1:23quietness and i would really encourage all the listeners to just maybe i've heard
- 1:27that there's there's different
- 1:29means of fasting.
- 1:31You know, you've got a water fast.
- 1:33You've got, I saw one the other day, a sardine fast where you just eat sardines.
- 1:37But the one that I've heard as well is internet fasting,
- 1:41to take yourself off internet and social media.
- 1:45And I would highly encourage it.
- 1:46I was forced into it, but loved every second of it.
- 1:50I don't see as much of a faster, actually.
- 1:52You can talk about sardine fast and grape fast as much as you like.
- 1:55A fast is when you don't eat anything.
- 1:57That's why it's called breakfast, break fast.
- 1:59Exactly.
- 2:00I see more as a whiskey and red wine fast myself.
- 2:04But that's another matter, Skunk.
- 2:06Can we talk about markets since you've been back?
- 2:09First day of world peace.
- 2:11Let's talk about that.
- 2:13It's a big day, and it's the first day of world peace.
- 2:17Thanks, Donald Trump, for doing that for us.
- 2:20And I noticed that markets are reacting very nicely to what he said.
- 2:24But of course, we know it's a lot of rubbish and it was people that were short
- 2:28of the market
- 2:30buying back the stock indices and the stocks themselves and every other
- 2:33instrument that they sold.
- 2:35So that's sort of exaggerated the move.
- 2:36We know that every single market that's done more than it usually does has been
- 2:41affected by that.
- 2:43But we also know that it's not going to last because of the erratic nature of the
- 2:48gentleman that I just mentioned earlier on.
- 2:50I mean, we saw crude oil down 18 percent at one stage, the biggest move.
- 2:52for I think about two decades and now it's only down 13%
- 2:57only and we're grateful for it but still it has recovered.
- 3:00Skull, can I see it doing so again?
- 3:02This is the pattern.
- 3:03It's a well-worn pattern five weeks in.
- 3:07Yeah, what a day.
- 3:09I mean, yeah, a few people asked me today, you know,
- 3:15what do you do now?
- 3:17I mean, what do you actually do?
- 3:20Do you follow this?
- 3:22Is this not time to be buying?
- 3:26Do you use this dead cat bounce and actually go and sell?
- 3:31What do you do?
- 3:32It's a fair question.
- 3:35Yeah, exactly.
- 3:36And yeah, when in doubt, just do nothing.
- 3:43Just do nothing.
- 3:45Really, you can't see this type of movement.
- 3:50I mean, it's totally erratic.
- 3:51I told my team this morning, it really feels like watching a very bad, I mean,
- 3:58seriously bad, B-rated war movie.
- 4:02It's, I mean, I can't believe that this is real life.
- 4:08We've been desensitized, haven't we?
- 4:10We expect it now.
- 4:11And when it happens, you say to yourself, did the President of the United States say
- 4:18that the F word?
- 4:20in a tweet at two o'clock in the morning.
- 4:20Did he say he's going to obliterate a nation?
- 4:23What was the word?
- 4:24A civilization.
- 4:25Yeah, a civilization.
- 4:27Did he really say that?
- 4:28And you think, oh, yes, he did.
- 4:29And you get on with something else, feeding the cat or something.
- 4:32It's astonishing the way that we just let it wash over us and that no one does
- 4:37anything about it.
- 4:39Yeah, we, through the F-bomb, you know, we're lunatics.
- 4:44I read that.
- 4:45I got back.
- 4:49back into civilization.
- 4:52And I read that.
- 4:53My first reaction was, it's one of these parody accounts.
- 4:56That must be one of these parody accounts.
- 4:59No way can the...
- 5:01President of the largest economy in the world of this type of tone.
- 5:08I mean, you always, when I say certain words or names,
- 5:14you've got a certain idea of that word.
- 5:18If I say James Bond, what immediately springs to mind?
- 5:23Me, first of all, but you know what I mean.
- 5:26I know.
- 5:27A suave secret agent working for MI5. Or is it MI6?
- 5:32Anyway, I know what you mean.
- 5:34There will be a suit.
- 5:35There will be welcomed here.
- 5:37This will be suave.
- 5:38This will be shaken and definitely not stirred.
- 5:41When you say the President of the United States, POTUS, I mean,
- 5:47I know we're laughing now, but this is never, I mean, anyway.
- 5:53Let's not go down this rabbit hole.
- 5:56We're sitting in an environment where now there's a 10-point plan coming from Iran,
- 6:02there's a 15-point plan.
- 6:04And my thought when I saw this,
- 6:10let's call it a tweet this morning, is Iran has won.
- 6:16They won.
- 6:16Because let's say now they sit around the table and let's say, well, we need to chat
- 6:22about these 10 points.
- 6:24So what's the ten points?
- 6:26I'm not going to go through all of them.
- 6:28But first point, no more war.
- 6:30No more shooting, no air.
- 6:32That's reasonable.
- 6:34To end a war, you need to stop war.
- 6:36Are these the points that the U.S.
- 6:38and Israel are imposing upon Iran, or is it the other way around?
- 6:40No, no, I'm talking about Iran.
- 6:41Iran's saying that they will settle.
- 6:45This is the ten things that they want.
- 6:46Okay, go on.
- 6:47And, you know, other point.
- 6:51We will need two million dollars for each ship that goes through the Strait of
- 6:58Hormuz.
- 6:59I mean, wow, that's going to be some year-end function party.
- 7:03Man, with all those two million dollars.
- 7:06There's about 150 to 160 ships that used to go through the Strait of Hormuz when
- 7:12world trade was, you know,
- 7:14doing pretty well, whether it be fertilizer or oil.
- 7:15So let's say it's a hundred.
- 7:19That's two.
- 7:19That's 200 million a day.
- 7:21That's not bad.
- 7:22That's not bad just for sitting there and waving a ship through.
- 7:25Correct.
- 7:26Correct.
- 7:27So that'll definitely be a great injection for the Iranian GDP. Then next point,
- 7:34no more U.S.
- 7:35sanctions.
- 7:36Now, I mean, that's most probably been
- 7:41Iran's biggest ball and chain for the past, how many years?
- 7:4547 years.
- 7:47Yeah, I know.
- 7:48Because, I mean, they are an oil-producing country.
- 7:52More than 50% of their GDP is made up just out of oil.
- 7:56And they had these sanctions.
- 7:57If they didn't have these sanctions, they would have done a hell of a lot better.
- 8:01No more sanctions.
- 8:03So I'm looking at this and say, yes, they've got blown up.
- 8:08There's a lot of work to be done when this war is done.
- 8:15But if...
- 8:16that's going to be the outcome.
- 8:17That's going to be, okay, we can work with these 10 points.
- 8:21Now you need to look at our 15 points and let's meet each other in the middle.
- 8:24And of course they won't meet each other in the middle because Trump is on the one
- 8:30hand and he doesn't like to concede one point,
- 8:32let alone seven out of the 15 he's going to impose upon them.
- 8:34And so it's not going to happen.
- 8:35And that is why you should be buying oil at the moment and going against everything
- 8:41you've seen in the last two or three hours as we record this
- 8:43end of the market stay.
- 8:44podcast.
- 8:44That's my opinion, not the opinion of PSG Wealth and Scout Clow.
- 8:50Now, Scout, we've gone on enough about Trump because you could do it till the
- 8:54cows come home.
- 8:56People do it a lot better than us.
- 8:56Yeah, go on to your final point.
- 8:58Because I had a chat with I don't know if you had David on the show yesterday.
- 9:04I haven't had him since he's been back from the States, but anyway.
- 9:08That's what I'm asking because he's still got very...
- 9:12Very, very heavy jet lag, but he's back.
- 9:14And I had a chat with him today, and I said, well, just tell me, general
- 9:20thoughts, what's the I mean, you just came back from the States.
- 9:22Yes, you stayed more on a let's call it the eastern side,
- 9:27more blue states.
- 9:29It's Boston and New York, and that's not America, as we know.
- 9:32Correct, correct.
- 9:33But what's the general I mean, you've been there.
- 9:37What's the general trend?
- 9:38What's the general feeling?
- 9:40He says, Skog, it is unbelievable how the people,
- 9:44the US citizens are turning against Trump.
- 9:48You can feel it.
- 9:49You can actually see it in the people's reactions and what's
- 9:55happening there.
- 9:56So I hear what you say that they won't meet each other in the middle.
- 10:03I wonder if we're not going to have a
- 10:0725th amendment impeachment coming along before then.
- 10:12Congress hasn't even gathered, so that's not going to happen.
- 10:16And the extraordinary thing is that because of the magic of television and
- 10:23so-called charisma and the litany of lies,
- 10:2577 million people voted for this freak.
- 10:27And it's really strange.
- 10:28I watch Jimmy Kimmel every morning and I think I'm in a bad mood when I wake up
- 10:33about Trump anyway, but then you get the Jimmy Kimmel
- 10:3515 minutes condensed of his show the previous night that he's just recorded and
- 10:39you think, goodness me,
- 10:41this bloke is clever the way he phrases things, the way he puts things,
- 10:44the way he puts a bit of a humorous spin on it, very humorous spin on it,
- 10:49but what he's saying is terribly, terribly important.
- 10:52And what I love about Trump...
- 10:54is that even when he's dead, which will be soon, it'll still go on.
- 10:59People will say, well, this happened and that happened.
- 11:01There'll be analyses galore on every single television station.
- 11:05Skunk, let me tell you about gold quickly, because it's one of your favourite
- 11:10subjects.
- 11:12And that is that all the safe haven buying has been done.
- 11:14It's all discounted.
- 11:15It was done over the last two years.
- 11:16It was done by the central banks for very, very different reasons, as a store of
- 11:21reserve,
- 11:21as a complement to the US dollar.
- 11:23But the safe haven buying as well has stopped now.
- 11:26And it's a dollar proxy.
- 11:27It's as simple as that.
- 11:28The dollar goes down, which it has in the last few hours because of what Trump has
- 11:32said.
- 11:33And the gold price went up and now it's coming down a bit as the dollar
- 11:37strengthens a bit.
- 11:39It's going tick for tick with the Dixie, the dollar index.
- 11:40Yep.
- 11:41And what Lindsay is saying for the listeners is when you look at the Dixie,
- 11:47the US dollar index.
- 11:49that is down 1% today.
- 11:50And when we look at the gold price, that is up 1% today.
- 11:52So, yeah, you're 100% right.
- 11:54And that's good to a certain extent because there was a definite decoupling.
- 11:59I mean, we've had the run-up to the actual war, but we also had prior to the run-up
- 12:05to the war,
- 12:07we had the Greenland saga, we had Venezuela saga, we had a few other sagas.
- 12:10And I think those sort of catapulted gold way before the actual events.
- 12:17the actual war.
- 12:19But you're right.
- 12:19I think you get a feeling now that when the war actually broke out,
- 12:24I think the biggest surprise to me was not that gold retraced because it was sort of
- 12:31a
- 12:31buy-in rumor, sell-off fact, but how the people actually just ran to the dollar
- 12:37again,
- 12:38how the dollar just became the safe haven.
- 12:41But, yeah, I think you're 100% right.
- 12:43But maybe…
- 12:45There's a hidden message for us in Trump's true social
- 12:53tweet that he sent out this morning.
- 12:55Did you read that final part?
- 12:57He said, this could be the golden age of the Middle East.
- 13:03He throws gold around a lot.
- 13:06Anyway, but I think, like you said, let's move along.
- 13:09I do think that you're right.
- 13:11I think there's definitely a more natural.
- 13:15movement in gold these these let's call it past week week or so and and
- 13:22i think that's a good thing it's it's the gold price is still trading uh four
- 13:28thousand seven hundred fifty odd dollars i mean
- 13:30that's that's really good i mean a lot of people mentioned
- 13:33that well there we go gold is going back all the way to three thousand three
- 13:39thousand five hundred dollars yeah we're sitting it's still still
- 13:41trading four thousand because the the globe the The
- 13:43investors out there still realize that the major issues is, one, inflation.
- 13:49Going forward, inflation is going to be a major issue.
- 13:54Are we going to see the world going into a recession, which I think could still very
- 13:59much happen?
- 14:01And all those things play to the advantage of gold, keeping some value.
- 14:05So, yeah, I'm really happy with the gold's movement.
- 14:08And, yeah, look at the gold shares today.
- 14:10Wow.
- 14:11Yeah.
- 14:12I was going to say that actually before we finish the gold subject.
- 14:15Can you tell me how they've behaved while gold has been so volatile?
- 14:18And also, don't forget, mired below $5,000 an ounce, which before we saw as support.
- 14:24Yeah, yeah.
- 14:25Yeah, I mean, the gold shares did phenomenal.
- 14:28I mean, yeah, retrace a little bit, a lot apart of today, but
- 14:33Anglo Gold still in the day 4.8% higher.
- 14:37When we look at gold fields, that was close to 5%, 4.7% for today.
- 14:42Harmony, they brought out a, I think the results today actually came out,
- 14:49or yesterday, sorry, results came out yesterday or so, that was up 4%.
- 14:53In general, that was a nice little kicker coming from the gold shares.
- 14:57And also, the other precious metal, PGMs did phenomenal today as well.
- 15:03We'll come to that in a moment because I'm going to get on to the markets.
- 15:05We have to do so.
- 15:07Dollar round is 16.38.
- 15:09Where else are we looking here?
- 15:11British pound against the round is 22.01.
- 15:13The euro round is 19.15.
- 15:15Euro dollar is about 1.17 at the moment, was higher, the euro that is.
- 15:20But we've got the gold price, the aforementioned.
- 15:234,754 on my slightly delayed screen, which is up 1.1%. We've got Platinum,
- 15:29the first and the biggest of the PGMs.
- 15:312,057, up 5.6%.
- 15:35But Palladium, it's a thinner market and it gets pushed around more and there's
- 15:40less supply and everything.
- 15:42But nonetheless, what a performance.
- 15:44Up 9.5% to $15.95 an ounce.
- 15:47Now, we're talking some real big moves here on the CRB index page.
- 15:52I've got Brent crude oil now $94.88, only down 13.2% scalp and $94.90 now,
- 15:5913.1%.
- 16:01West Texas crude $95.62, down 15 and a third percent.
- 16:06Natural gas down four and a third.
- 16:07Gasoline down nearly 10% today.
- 16:10It's gone down through $3 a gallon in the United States.
- 16:13So that'll please a lot of people.
- 16:15Other ones, oh yes, copper, of course, $5.75 in New York, which is three and two
- 16:21thirds percent higher.
- 16:23I was looking at all sorts of other things.
- 16:25I looked at live cattle, of all things, and I thought, what other commodities are
- 16:29either doing well or doing badly?
- 16:31Live cattle have gone to record highs this year, and I think it's because of
- 16:36feedstuffs coming through the straight of all moves.
- 16:38I think so, Skulk.
- 16:40You're cleverer than me.
- 16:42You'll be able to confirm or deny that.
- 16:44But a lot of commodities have done well, and that leads me to the CRB index.
- 16:46How many weeks ago was it?
- 16:47We were saying, well, it's just broken 400, and you looked it up, and the high
- 16:53was 425 on this particular index.
- 16:55That wasn't that long ago, was it?
- 16:57Yeah,
- 16:57and I still highlighted the fact that we've still got
- 17:05some running to do to get to the previous highs.
- 17:08And man, that didn't take long.
- 17:11Nah, sliced through that like a hot knife through butter, and it's now 483 almost.
- 17:16Record highs.
- 17:18Tomorrow it'll be much lower because they only calculate the index in the morning.
- 17:22So it'll be much lower because of the oil price substantially.
- 17:25So it'll be 10% down at least.
- 17:27But nonetheless, let's enjoy it while we're looking at a screen that says
- 17:33482.71.
- 17:35South African 10-year bond yield 8.52%.
- 17:37It's recovered sharply.
- 17:39I remember looking at it just three or four days ago at 9.20%.
- 17:43So yields falling in South Africa.
- 17:45Bonds going in the other direction.
- 17:48US 10-year, that's another one.
- 17:49Was in the 440s a couple of weeks ago, now 4.27%.
- 17:54S&P 500 futures, the dead cap bounce is just coming off a little bit.
- 18:00But nonetheless, 2.1% higher at 6,796.
- 18:04That's for the June futures.
- 18:07One more thing I've got to give you, and that is the Bitcoin price, which is
- 18:13benefiting from the weaker dollar.
- 18:1571,150, which is up 4.4% on the day.
- 18:18Anything else you want to talk about, Scott, before we go to the ups and downs
- 18:22on the JSC?
- 18:24Any themes since we spoke?
- 18:25No, I think your call was 100% right.
- 18:28I mean, it was a broader market movement where if you,
- 18:36let's call it produce or salt, anything other than oil or energy-related,
- 18:42Then you had a fantastic day.
- 18:44If you did the former, then you had a very, very difficult day.
- 18:49So yeah, there was no real news out.
- 18:52Yeah, very, very good day.
- 18:55Nice recovery in the market for today.
- 18:57Impala Platinum is top of the list on the JSC on the close.
- 19:0013% higher, just over 13% higher.
- 19:04Right behind the big one, the ex-Anglo-American Platinum division,
- 19:10Valterra, up 9.2%.
- 19:12Pepcor, why is Pepcor up 9%?
- 19:12Come to that in a moment.
- 19:13I don't know what ATT is.
- 19:15What is ATT?
- 19:16What is the symbol ATT for a stock, Skalk?
- 19:20I should know this.
- 19:21Let's quickly have a look.
- 19:23It's a tech, if I'm not mistaken.
- 19:25Yeah, it's a tech.
- 19:26I'm guessing now, but it's a property counter, a tech.
- 19:30Okay, 8.6% up for the ridiculously named property counter.
- 19:35Yeah, it is a tech.
- 19:36And GrowthPoint as well, which is another not so ridiculously named property
- 19:41counter, up 8.1%.
- 19:43So something happening there probably to do with the bond market.
- 19:43On the downside, horrible for Tungela.
- 19:46That's got to be the most volatile stock of the year so far.
- 19:49down 12.5%, Sassl down 12.3%, down below 200 now,
- 19:54199, Sun International down 3%, Carew down 3%,
- 19:59and British American Tobacco a 2.8% loses.
- 20:03Outside of those big ones, Skalk, any small or medium caps?
- 20:07No.
- 20:08No, and just quickly, the Sun International, the only one there is XDEF
- 20:14Stories, but the rest is all retracements.
- 20:16No, I think it's been a great day.
- 20:18And just by the way, you mentioned the CRB commodity index.
- 20:23I looked the other day.
- 20:24I think it's about 35%.
- 20:2735% of the CRB commodity index is energy-related commodities.
- 20:34But I think some of these other harder commodities, the golds, the silvers,
- 20:38those will definitely help ease in.
- 20:41But you're right.
- 20:42I think we will have a bit of a retracement in the CRB commodity.
- 20:44Probably around 4%, 5% tomorrow, yeah.
- 20:46Anyway.
- 20:47It's not over yet.
- 20:48Skulk, thanks so much for your time as always.
