- 0:00Speaker 1: Woo!
- 0:01Speaker 2: Still gots.
- 0:01Speaker 3: Woo! I gotta be honest with you, Bruce, there's a
- 0:03Speaker 3: good chance I'd be high anyway.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Woo!
- 0:05Speaker 4: And I'm wondering how the football weekend was. Were you
- 0:07Speaker 4: able to watch it?
- 0:08Speaker 2: Wow, what happened?
- 0:09Speaker 3: Oh, I'm tired of him.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I'm serious. How about that? In company. We are mother shuckers, baby.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Woo! Bruce, does Faison Brandon's name sound like it's on backwards?
- 0:20Speaker 2: No doubt. It's time to get your.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's time to get your racket to get the all boat,
- 0:27Speaker 1: the all boat.
- 0:28Speaker 3: You got nothing right there.
- 0:29Speaker 2: This is not going well. This is Stu Gotts and Company. Stu,
- 0:34Speaker 2: back to you.
- 0:35Speaker 4: It is Stu Gotts and Company presented by FanDuel and
- 0:37Speaker 4: the FanDuel Sportsbook. Mike Goldick Jr. going to join us
- 0:40Speaker 4: in about 15 minutes. Joel Anderson going to join us.
- 0:43Speaker 4: It's set number two here. Is he doing radio today?
- 0:46Speaker 4: Just me and Taylor right now. 23-17, the San Francisco
- 0:51Speaker 4: 49ers get a victory last night there.
- 0:54Speaker 2: They remain undefeated. They are perfect. I don't think anyone
- 0:58Speaker 2: expected that.
- 0:59Speaker 4: But I think the interesting part of this entire game
- 1:01Speaker 4: from last night, Taylor, was Dan Quinn.
- 1:04Speaker 2: The timing.
- 1:05Speaker 4: I'm telling you, you couldn't script comedy better than what
- 1:08Speaker 4: we had last night during this game. Dan Quinn. They
- 1:12Speaker 4: go for it on fourth down. Dan Quinn thinks it's
- 1:14Speaker 4: third down. You see Jaden Daniels and Dan Quinn talking
- 1:17Speaker 4: about it after they don't get it on fourth down.
- 1:19Speaker 4: He wanted to kick a field goal, and Jaden's like, yo,
- 1:22Speaker 4: the other team has the ball.
- 1:24Speaker 1: So last week, we were doing a whole blame pie
- 1:27Speaker 1: to make sense of the Giants-Commanders ending between Dan Quinn
- 1:31Speaker 1: and Jaden Daniels. I'm watching Monday Night Football yesterday, and
- 1:35Speaker 1: I come to the conclusion they might both.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Just be dumb.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Because that exact sequence is the moment I thought that
- 1:42Speaker 1: where Jaden Daniels, it's fourth down. He throws the ball
- 1:46Speaker 1: out of bounds on the fourth down where he doesn't
- 1:49Speaker 1: even give his receiver a chance to make a play.
- 1:52Speaker 1: That's a pretty bad IQ move on Jaden Daniels' part.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Then the camera, like you mentioned, cuts to Dan Quinn.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And the lip readers have said he says, field goal. Oh,
- 2:02Speaker 1: that was fourth down? Just two guys completely unaware of
- 2:07Speaker 1: the situation.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Yes, if they were to make the movie Dumb and
- 2:10Speaker 4: Dumber about two NFL guys, it would be.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Jaden Daniels and Dan Quinn. Starring Jaden Daniels and Dan Quinn.
- 2:15Speaker 3: The D in Daniels stands for dumb.
- 2:18Speaker 2: What about Dan Quinn?
- 2:20Speaker 3: The D in Dan stands for dumber.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Like Jaden Daniels is this incredibly talented quarterback, but this
- 2:26Speaker 1: is now two consecutive weeks where the commanders have needed
- 2:30Speaker 1: their quarterback to understand the situation. And for two consecutive weeks,
- 2:34Speaker 1: he's made mistakes that you simply cannot make at that
- 2:38Speaker 1: position where the commanders are 0-7-1 in Jaden Daniels' last
- 2:43Speaker 1: eight starts. He gets a lot of credit for taking
- 2:46Speaker 1: that team to the NFC Championship.
- 2:48Speaker 3: As a rookie, yes.
- 2:50Speaker 1: He hasn't done anything since then.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Well, he's gotten hurt.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And when he's been playing, he's been losing.
- 2:56Speaker 4: He has been losing, although he was not the reason
- 2:59Speaker 4: they lost that game last night. He played very well.
- 3:01Speaker 4: They had opportunities to win that game. They probably should
- 3:03Speaker 4: have won that game, right?
- 3:05Speaker 3: I mean.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah, so when that game goes to halftime at 20-3...
- 3:09Speaker 1: You think it's over.
- 3:10Speaker 2: You think it's over.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That's a game that San Francisco normally wins like 45-10.
- 3:14Speaker 1: They held on to win by just six, where... The
- 3:18Speaker 1: 49ers went 3-3 and outs in a row and only
- 3:20Speaker 1: had a total of two yards in the fourth quarter.
- 3:23Speaker 1: For me, when I watch the San Francisco 49ers team,
- 3:27Speaker 1: the only thing that could beat the San Francisco 49ers
- 3:29Speaker 1: this year is the San Francisco 49ers. I don't question
- 3:33Speaker 1: if they're good enough to beat the best teams in football.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It's whether or not the 49ers can keep enough players
- 3:38Speaker 1: healthy to win the Super Bowl where... Mike Evans goes out,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and that offense looked like it had no other answers
- 3:46Speaker 1: when Evans goes out. And you're like, how can this
- 3:49Speaker 1: offense not have any other answers when somebody like Mike
- 3:52Speaker 1: Evans goes out? Look at their wide receiver depth chart.
- 3:55Speaker 1: When Mike Evans leaves the game because he aggravates his Achilles,
- 4:00Speaker 1: the 49ers had just four available wide receivers. Brandon Cooks,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Jordan Watkins, Jacob Cohen, and a practice squad elevation... Malik Turner,
- 4:11Speaker 1: where Debo Samuel's out with a hamstring injury. Ricky Pearsall's
- 4:15Speaker 1: out for the season with a knee injury. Christian Kirk's
- 4:17Speaker 1: on IR. I forgot Christian Kirk was even on this team.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Demarcus Robinson on IR, and they're... draft pick from this
- 4:25Speaker 1: past NFL draft, Deshaun Stripling, he's on IR. This 49ers
- 4:31Speaker 1: team has been decimated by injuries.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Yes, and Mike Evans is the guy they couldn't afford
- 4:36Speaker 4: to lose, but they always have Christian McCaffrey and they
- 4:38Speaker 4: have George Kittle right now, but those guys are a
- 4:41Speaker 4: step away, both of them, from also getting hurt.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 1: For me, when you watch the 49ers, Mike Evans is
- 4:49Speaker 1: the guy you can't lose on the offensive side of
- 4:51Speaker 1: the ball. He's the equivalent of Fred Warner for them
- 4:54Speaker 1: on the defensive side of the ball, where Mike Evans
- 4:57Speaker 1: comes and he almost feels like a cheat code in
- 4:59Speaker 1: this offense when you pair him with a quarterback like
- 5:02Speaker 1: Brock Purdy, who deserves a lot of credit today for
- 5:06Speaker 1: how good Brock Purdy has looked through this start for
- 5:08Speaker 1: the 49ers.
- 5:09Speaker 3: MVP, I mean.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Can I ask you something when it comes to Brock Purdy?
- 5:12Speaker 3: Sure.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Is Brock Purdy the only quarterback that we hear about
- 5:16Speaker 1: layered throws? Because I feel like this is a Brock
- 5:20Speaker 1: Purdy exclusive thing. Like, I don't even know what we're
- 5:22Speaker 1: doing there.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Well, define the layered throw for the audience and for me,
- 5:26Speaker 4: for that matter.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So, like, the layered throw is, like, maybe the linebacker's there.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And Brock Purdy does such a good job at, like,
- 5:32Speaker 1: placing the ball over the linebacker's head, which should be, like,
- 5:36Speaker 1: a common thing. But when you're watching an NFL on Sunday— Like,
- 5:40Speaker 1: you don't hear about that. And then, like, the second
- 5:43Speaker 1: the 49ers game comes on, they're like, look at Brock Purdy.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Look how he throws that layered pass. It feels like
- 5:50Speaker 1: a Brock Purdy exclusive thing.
- 5:52Speaker 4: What you're saying is you see layered passes every Sunday
- 5:56Speaker 4: in the NFL, but no one talks about him unless
- 5:57Speaker 4: Brock Purdy makes them.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Brock Purdy is the only person getting credit for layered throws.
- 6:02Speaker 4: He does have 14 touchdowns and two interceptions this year, Taylor.
- 6:06Speaker 3: He's been great. He has been absolutely amazing.
- 6:11Speaker 4: 1,460 yards, but even Brock Purdy is one step away
- 6:15Speaker 4: from getting hurt.
- 6:16Speaker 3: He was hurt last year.
- 6:18Speaker 4: This Niner team is undefeated, and they're getting further. They're
- 6:21Speaker 4: creating distance between themselves and the Rams. I do have
- 6:24Speaker 4: a Mike Evans story that I'll get to in just
- 6:27Speaker 4: a second. I just want to be clear here. Are
- 6:29Speaker 4: you saying the bar is set so low for Purdy, or...
- 6:33Speaker 4: We have fallen in love with Purdy so much that
- 6:35Speaker 4: we talk about his layered passes.
- 6:37Speaker 1: We have fallen in love with Brock Purdy's ability to
- 6:40Speaker 1: master the layered pass.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Really?
- 6:42Speaker 3: Where no other.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Quarterback in the NFL, we don't talk about any quarterback's
- 6:47Speaker 1: individual skill trait. We don't talk about Caleb Williams' arm
- 6:51Speaker 1: or Lamar Jackson's legs as much as we talk about
- 6:55Speaker 1: Brock Purdy's ability to throw a layered throw.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Do we talk more about Brock's ability to throw a
- 7:00Speaker 4: layered throw or Josh.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Allen's ability to run?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Brock Purdy.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Really? Yes. You don't like Brock Purdy.
- 7:08Speaker 1: No, I like Brock Purdy. I think Brock Purdy is
- 7:11Speaker 1: a great quarterback. And he's clearly outproven where he went
- 7:17Speaker 1: in the NFL draft being like Mr.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Irrelevant.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And now he's a top 10 quarterback in the NFL.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And I don't think you have any questions. Like, the
- 7:24Speaker 1: 49ers could win a Super Bowl with Brock Purdy. They've
- 7:27Speaker 1: been to a Super Bowl with Brock Purdy. But could
- 7:29Speaker 1: win a Super Bowl.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I think they can win a Super Bowl with Brock.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Listen, if you can get there with Brock Purdy and
- 7:34Speaker 4: they continue to be good and they probably have the
- 7:36Speaker 4: best coach in the NFL, of course you can win one.
- 7:38Speaker 3: If you can get there, you can win one. Taylor,
- 7:41Speaker 3: do you play fantasy football?
- 7:43Speaker 1: No.
- 7:44Speaker 4: You know I do. You know I'm in a very
- 7:47Speaker 4: expensive league. And so I just want to give you
- 7:50Speaker 4: the scenario. If you played fantasy football, do you imagine
- 7:55Speaker 4: that if an opposing player on a team you didn't
- 7:57Speaker 4: care about got injured, do you imagine you, and it
- 8:02Speaker 4: won you the game, do you imagine you would cheer?
- 8:04Speaker 1: No. You can't cheer for injuries.
- 8:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:08Speaker 4: So we were up 107 to 95, and we had
- 8:13Speaker 4: no one playing last night, and the guy we were
- 8:16Speaker 4: playing against, he had Mike Evans. Yes. Mike Evans was
- 8:20Speaker 4: on his way, so he needed 12 more points. And
- 8:23Speaker 4: I'm telling you, if Evans stays healthy, he's going to
- 8:26Speaker 4: get the 12 more points.
- 8:28Speaker 3: He didn't.
- 8:29Speaker 4: He limped off the field. I'm not certain what his
- 8:32Speaker 4: status is. I don't think it's going to be a
- 8:35Speaker 4: season-ending injury. And I didn't know how to react. Because
- 8:40Speaker 4: essentially what happened there was I was watching Mike Evans
- 8:44Speaker 4: walk off the field, texting my brother, Evans.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Hurt, we win.
- 8:50Speaker 2: It sounds like a celebration.
- 8:52Speaker 3: There was a fist bump. And I feel terrible about it.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I really do.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I don't sound like I feel terrible about it.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I'm laughing while I tell the story. But it was
- 9:04Speaker 1: a clutch injury. Listen, I hear some stuff in your voice.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Remorse is not one of them. You hear excitement?
- 9:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I do feel bad. I mean, listen, the text to
- 9:17Speaker 3: my brother is one thing.
- 9:18Speaker 4: The fist bump and opening a bottle of champagne in
- 9:21Speaker 4: my living room is a totally different story.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I feel like the injury to Mike Evans was more
- 9:28Speaker 1: of like a precaution where he doesn't come back for
- 9:30Speaker 1: that second half.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Yes, and I knew that.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Shanahan after the game said the injury didn't require
- 9:36Speaker 1: additional testing. if it was like the Terry McLaurin situation
- 9:40Speaker 1: where Terry McLaurin's getting the air cast on the field
- 9:43Speaker 1: and the cart, that would be going, I wouldn't even
- 9:47Speaker 1: send a text at that point. It's understood when that
- 9:49Speaker 1: cart comes out that he won in fantasy. Mike Evans,
- 9:53Speaker 1: in a Super Bowl, Mike Evans comes back out in
- 9:55Speaker 1: the second half.
- 9:56Speaker 2: He pushes it.
- 9:57Speaker 3: No question. It wasn't a season-ending injury.
- 9:59Speaker 4: He wasn't you know he didn't need to be carted
- 10:01Speaker 4: off the field he walked off on his own power
- 10:04Speaker 4: he limped off on his own power If it were
- 10:06Speaker 4: Terry McLaurin, I would not have sent the text, I
- 10:09Speaker 4: would not have fist-pumped, and I would not have cracked
- 10:11Speaker 4: a bottle of champagne.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Okay, I'm coming back around on your side.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I mean, who do you think I am?
- 10:15Speaker 2: I'm coming back around on your side.
- 10:18Speaker 4: So it's worthy of a celebration. Evans is going to
- 10:21Speaker 4: be fine. The Niners won the game. Evans will be back.
- 10:24Speaker 4: He'll get some rest.
- 10:25Speaker 2: He's going to be fine.
- 10:26Speaker 4: He's going straight to the Hall of Fame five years
- 10:28Speaker 4: from the day he retires. And this won't impact that.
- 10:31Speaker 4: But it did impact my fantasy team.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It's a big W. We needed it.
- 10:36Speaker 1: So you mentioned before the Rams factor in all of this.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And with the Mike Evans injury, it's a pretty easy
- 10:43Speaker 1: lead-in with Devontae Adams, who is now out with a
- 10:46Speaker 1: ruptured hamstring. He's expected to miss six to ten weeks now.
- 10:50Speaker 1: He leads the Rams with 480 receiving yards, four touchdowns.
- 10:55Speaker 1: San Francisco keeps finding ways to win despite its injuries,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and it feels like every day there's a new problem
- 11:02Speaker 1: for this Rams team, where the 49ers are pulling away,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and the Rams are very dangerously getting close to being
- 11:09Speaker 1: left behind, where there's no real clear timetable for Miles
- 11:12Speaker 1: Garrett return. You have the 49ers undefeated, and the Rams
- 11:15Speaker 1: were supposed to be this big bad team. It's them
- 11:18Speaker 1: or the field, and They're running out of answers, and
- 11:22Speaker 1: they're potentially running out of time.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Well, they're 2-4. Their division, San Francisco, is now 6-0.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Seattle is 3-3. We did this yesterday a little bit
- 11:31Speaker 4: with Mikey. yeah, it's going to be tough because the
- 11:33Speaker 4: NFC North, all four teams are above 500. It's going
- 11:37Speaker 4: to be hard for them to get into the playoffs.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Maybe they sneak in as a wild card. That division
- 11:42Speaker 4: is done. They are not winning that division.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Even if the Rams figure it out, which is giving
- 11:47Speaker 1: the Rams a lot more credit than they probably deserve
- 11:50Speaker 1: right now because nothing about their first six games has
- 11:54Speaker 1: made you feel like they could be that team that
- 11:56Speaker 1: we talked about in the preseason. Rams are the field,
- 11:59Speaker 1: so even if they get healthy, even if they start
- 12:02Speaker 1: to look like this Super Bowl contender that we expected
- 12:05Speaker 1: them to be, their path to the Super Bowl is
- 12:08Speaker 1: going to be as a wildcard team. And that means
- 12:11Speaker 1: potentially three playoff games on the road just to get
- 12:13Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl where only seven wildcard teams have
- 12:16Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl through Super Bowl 60. That's like 12%
- 12:20Speaker 1: of teams.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I think the Packers did it once with Aaron Rodgers.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Giants.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Yeah, he went from dome to dome to dome. He
- 12:26Speaker 4: prefers a dome as opposed to playing. in the cold
- 12:29Speaker 4: weather at Lambeau Field, the Rams will be fine. If
- 12:32Speaker 4: they make it to the playoffs, no one's going to
- 12:34Speaker 4: want to see the Rams, Taylor. Are you kidding me? Like,
- 12:36Speaker 4: if the Rams come strolling into your stadium, wildcard weekend,
- 12:40Speaker 4: divisional round weekend, championship weekend, they're not sweating it. There's
- 12:44Speaker 4: a good chance the home team is, you know?
- 12:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Again, I think that's giving the Rams the benefit of
- 12:50Speaker 1: the doubt, saying that the Rams have... The Rams will
- 12:53Speaker 1: have Puka Nakua, the Rams will have Matthew Stafford, Myles Garrett,
- 12:56Speaker 1: Aaron Donald, like... I hear everybody keep saying that the
- 13:00Speaker 1: Rams are going to figure it out. The Rams are
- 13:02Speaker 1: going to be okay. The reward, though, if they do
- 13:06Speaker 1: make it, having to win three road playoff games just
- 13:10Speaker 1: to reach the Super Bowl, that is going to be
- 13:13Speaker 1: a tall task. And again, that's giving them the benefit
- 13:16Speaker 1: of the doubt and kind of forgetting the team that
- 13:19Speaker 1: we just saw lose to the Arizona Cardinals where the
- 13:21Speaker 1: Cardinals didn't even score a touchdown and beat them.
- 13:23Speaker 3: So after the Buffalo loss, the excuse was, well, look
- 13:26Speaker 3: at the schedule.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Yep.
- 13:27Speaker 2: They play Arizona.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Here are your get-right games.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:31Speaker 4: They play Arizona. They're at Vegas. They're home with the Chargers.
- 13:35Speaker 4: They're at Washington. They're at Arizona again. And that sounded
- 13:38Speaker 4: great a week ago until they lost to Arizona on Sunday.
- 13:43Speaker 2: At home!
- 13:44Speaker 1: And they're only a touchdown favorite against the Raiders. Again,
- 13:49Speaker 1: there's been nothing to think that this Rams team is
- 13:52Speaker 1: going to be the juggernaut of a team, especially now
- 13:54Speaker 1: with Devontae Adams now on the injury report.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Right, and there's nothing to think that the 49ers are
- 13:58Speaker 4: going to stop being good, even if Brock Purdy does
- 14:00Speaker 4: get hurt.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Happened last year. Mack Jones was fine. What a floaty.
- 14:03Speaker 1: You don't hear Shanahan making any excuses. All we do
- 14:07Speaker 1: is give excuses for McVay. You have Aaron Donald. You
- 14:11Speaker 1: got Aaron Donald out of retirement.
- 14:12Speaker 2: That's right.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And you can't beat Jacoby Brissett because you don't have
- 14:15Speaker 1: Miles Garrett.
- 14:17Speaker 3: That has to be so frustrating for Aaron Donald. He
- 14:21Speaker 3: was fine. He was happy.
- 14:22Speaker 4: He was headed to the Hall of Fame. He comes
- 14:24Speaker 4: back and they lose to Arizona at home. He gets
- 14:27Speaker 4: stomach buffalo at Josh Allen. Losing to– he didn't come
- 14:31Speaker 4: back to lose to– To Jacoby Brissett?
- 14:33Speaker 3: Put it on the poll.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Did Aaron Donald come back to lose to Jacoby Brissett?
- 14:40Speaker 1: He's like, I reset my Hall of Fame clock to
- 14:43Speaker 1: lose to Zonovan Knight?
- 14:46Speaker 3: Re-Bressett?
- 14:49Speaker 2: Terrible joke.
- 14:53Speaker 3: It really was. Who has he lost to? He's lost
- 14:55Speaker 3: to Bo Nix.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Oh, boy.
- 14:58Speaker 4: He lost to Josh Allen. He could stomach that. He's
- 15:01Speaker 4: lost to Brock Purdy already, 27-7. He wasn't there for
- 15:05Speaker 4: that game, though. That was Australia, right?
- 15:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right. Major disappointment. Do you think he regrets
- 15:13Speaker 3: coming back, Aaron Donald?
- 15:14Speaker 1: So he would never say that publicly. Privately, he goes
- 15:18Speaker 1: back home to his wife and is like, I can't
- 15:20Speaker 1: believe they traded Marvin Harrison Jr. and we lost to
- 15:24Speaker 1: this team.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Do you think Miles Garrett regrets leaving Cleveland? Yes. 1,000%.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Mike Golick Jr.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Next.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Mike Golick Jr.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Is with us 10 to noon Eastern on ESPN Radio.
- 15:39Speaker 3: The Golicks.
- 15:39Speaker 4: I keep calling it Golick and Golick. It's the Golicks
- 15:43Speaker 4: on ESPN Radio. We're coming off perhaps the greatest college
- 15:47Speaker 4: football Saturday of all time.
- 15:49Speaker 3: So let's start with board games.
- 15:52Speaker 4: I heard you guys talking on your show about the
- 15:56Speaker 4: best board games of all time. Taylor, what would you
- 15:59Speaker 4: classify chess as? Would you classify that as a board game?
- 16:03Speaker 1: It's played on a board, but I wouldn't classify it
- 16:05Speaker 1: as a board game.
- 16:06Speaker 3: It's not a board game.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Thank you. Go ahead, Gojo.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Take it away.
- 16:10Speaker 2: No, it's nice to be around like-minded folks because I'm
- 16:15Speaker 2: sitting over here taking track. I mean, you guys know
- 16:18Speaker 2: my dad. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy
- 16:20Speaker 2: that would be stumping for chess as a board game.
- 16:23Speaker 2: And so when he was even on that side, I
- 16:25Speaker 2: was like, all right, we're just posturing so we can
- 16:27Speaker 2: all sound smart, knowing good and damn well. If you
- 16:30Speaker 2: were at a party and someone said, hey, We've had
- 16:33Speaker 2: a few cocktails. We're hanging out after dinner. Let's play
- 16:35Speaker 2: a board game.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yes.
- 16:37Speaker 2: If they busted out chess, you would look at them
- 16:39Speaker 2: like they were insane.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I would punch him in the face.
- 16:42Speaker 4: I mean, I don't want to think when I'm playing
- 16:45Speaker 4: a board game, I just want to play.
- 16:47Speaker 2: You know? Isn't that the worst part of every board game, though?
- 16:50Speaker 2: Because while they might not all be as complicated as chess,
- 16:53Speaker 2: they all have rules. And when someone's trying to explain
- 16:56Speaker 2: a board game to you, it is the most difficult
- 16:59Speaker 2: portion of every night. Gojo, I had this exact problem
- 17:02Speaker 2: with our friend of the show, Jessica Smetana. Jess loves
- 17:06Speaker 2: Monopoly Deal, and I have since loved Monopoly Deal. But
- 17:10Speaker 2: the first time her and Lee were trying to explain
- 17:13Speaker 2: it to me, I was like, oh, no, I'm afraid
- 17:15Speaker 2: to tell them that I didn't get any of those rules. Right.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Like, listen, if I land on go to jail, I
- 17:21Speaker 4: go to jail. If I land on Park Place, I
- 17:23Speaker 4: buy it. You know, I mean, that's it.
- 17:26Speaker 2: And that's a great reminder. There's no substitute. for just
- 17:29Speaker 2: gripping it and ripping it. Cause I was like, dude, Taylor,
- 17:32Speaker 2: the first time I played monopoly deal was with my
- 17:34Speaker 2: future in-laws and same thing. We had had a few drinks.
- 17:38Speaker 2: We were sitting around. I took in like half of it.
- 17:40Speaker 2: And I was like, you know what? Let me just
- 17:42Speaker 2: go through the first time around and I'll figure it out.
- 17:45Speaker 2: And you have that game where people are a little
- 17:47Speaker 2: lenient with the rules. And let me tell you what,
- 17:49Speaker 2: they had to batten down the hatches quick because I
- 17:51Speaker 2: came through and was taking names and kicking ass. I
- 17:53Speaker 2: am great at that game now and have consistently dominated
- 17:57Speaker 2: when playing against my future in-laws in a way that
- 17:59Speaker 2: I worry might be affecting the relationship. I don't know
- 18:01Speaker 2: if they like how much I win a Monopoly deal.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Are you celebrating afterwards during, how does that work? Yes.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Oh, because, because there's that point where, you know, mathematically
- 18:11Speaker 2: in the hand that you're going to win. And I'm
- 18:14Speaker 2: just sitting, we were playing, we were playing outside and
- 18:17Speaker 2: I'm sitting there kicking my feet in the air, just
- 18:20Speaker 2: peacocking in front of everyone. I could tell I was
- 18:22Speaker 2: getting on everyone's nerves to the point where after I
- 18:24Speaker 2: had to ask my fiancee, was I going too hard?
- 18:27Speaker 2: She doesn't like games. So I'm the game representative for us.
- 18:30Speaker 2: And I feel like I got to put on for
- 18:32Speaker 2: our portion of the family. Right. And I had to
- 18:34Speaker 2: ask her, I was like, am I going too hard
- 18:36Speaker 2: right now? Because once I get going and I'm competitive,
- 18:39Speaker 2: I want to win.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 18:40Speaker 2: That's what we're here for.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yes. That's all the goal looks.
- 18:42Speaker 4: No, I mean, no, your significant other, no, the man
- 18:47Speaker 4: you're going to marry, no, the family you're going to
- 18:49Speaker 4: marry into, uh, was your dad taking the other side
- 18:52Speaker 4: just to do that sports radio thing?
- 18:53Speaker 2: I mean, No, I think he genuinely believed it, which
- 18:57Speaker 2: is even worse. But I think he had been corrupted
- 18:59Speaker 2: by our staff, who all, because this had been a
- 19:01Speaker 2: trivia question that they got right at trivia night, was
- 19:04Speaker 2: what was the best-selling board game of all time. And
- 19:07Speaker 2: I thought that was ridiculous. So I don't know. Dad
- 19:09Speaker 2: does like to piss me off, so I wonder if
- 19:11Speaker 2: maybe he was just going that route. But even worse,
- 19:14Speaker 2: I do think he just believed it.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Gojo and Stu, what would you guys say is the
- 19:17Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore of board games?
- 19:19Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 19:20Speaker 3: First off, before you answer that, is Twister a board game?
- 19:24Speaker 1: No.
- 19:25Speaker 3: No party game it's a party game well yeah.
- 19:28Speaker 2: It also it does fail to clear the one thing
- 19:30Speaker 2: that chess does which a board game requires pieces and
- 19:34Speaker 2: twister does not have pieces they go on the board.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Right well we're the pieces right essentially and that's yes
- 19:41Speaker 4: next level pretty meta aren't we just the pieces on
- 19:46Speaker 4: the board game of life when you said like-minded by
- 19:50Speaker 4: the way, you meant simple-minded, right?
- 19:55Speaker 2: Oh, it takes like that, Stu Gatz. I think this
- 19:58Speaker 2: is the most enlightened show I've been on.
- 20:00Speaker 4: All right, Mount Rushmore. Of board games. I mean, Monopoly
- 20:06Speaker 4: is a lot.
- 20:06Speaker 2: It has to be.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Right?
- 20:07Speaker 2: Life is a lot.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Michael Jordan of board games.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Put it on the poll.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Is Monopoly the Michael Jordan of board games? The M
- 20:14Speaker 4: Monopoly stands for MJ.
- 20:18Speaker 2: What's the LeBron James of board games then? Wow. Wow, wow, wow.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Probably Scrabble. So second bowl. Ooh, Scrabble's a good pick.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Scrabble's a really good pick.
- 20:28Speaker 3: How about life?
- 20:29Speaker 2: I mean.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Would it?
- 20:31Speaker 1: Ooh.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Candyland.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Candyland's the one I always think of. Because to your point, like,
- 20:39Speaker 2: what a simple, beautiful game.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:43Speaker 2: I slide down. There's a ladder sometimes here. I get
- 20:46Speaker 2: stuck in the mud pit. It's all just perfect.
- 20:48Speaker 4: All right, let's fill this out here. We agree on Monopoly, right?
- 20:54Speaker 4: Big agree on Monopoly. I would upvote Scrabble. I love Scrabble.
- 20:57Speaker 3: All right, I'll put Scrabble on there. I like Scrabble, too.
- 20:59Speaker 3: I'm not good at it.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Is Guess Who a board game?
- 21:03Speaker 4: Ooh.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Hmm. I don't.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Know.
- 21:07Speaker 2: I don't think so, because it doesn't have a board, technically. Right.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Is checkers a board game? I guess same vein as chess.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Same as chess. I'm more likely to argue that checkers
- 21:18Speaker 2: is a board game, though, because I do think it's
- 21:20Speaker 2: just dumber. And you get to do the great thing
- 21:25Speaker 2: where you get one piece all the way to the
- 21:26Speaker 2: other end and you stack it. It can it can
- 21:29Speaker 2: Nash dribble on the board. I love it.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Yes, I would put checkers. Checkers is certainly in consideration here.
- 21:35Speaker 4: How about clue for the Mount Rushmore board games? Clue
- 21:38Speaker 4: is a good one.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I mean, they made a movie about Clue. It was
- 21:42Speaker 2: so good as a board game.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:45Speaker 3: They've made several movies about chess, just so you know.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Okay. Bobby Fisher. All right. So I'm going. I haven't
- 21:52Speaker 2: seen any of those.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I'm going Life, Monopoly, Clue. I want to say Stratomatic.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I've never even heard of Stratomatic.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Oh, great baseball game.
- 22:06Speaker 2: It's a baseball game.
- 22:07Speaker 3: I mean, listen, if you want Tim Kirchen to spend
- 22:10Speaker 3: two hours with you.
- 22:11Speaker 1: It was analytics before analytics, Gojo.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Yes, yes. Just talk Stratomatic with Kirchen.
- 22:16Speaker 2: We need a fourth here.
- 22:17Speaker 3: You have a fourth? You have your own here, Gojo?
- 22:20Speaker 2: I honestly, I am co-signing all those there. So we
- 22:23Speaker 2: have monopoly Scrabble clue. I'm pretty comfortable throwing candy land
- 22:29Speaker 2: in there. That's one of my favorites of all time.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Yes.
- 22:31Speaker 3: I mean, speaking of games where you don't have to
- 22:33Speaker 3: think that is the game, right? Shoots and ladders, forget it.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Shoots and ladders.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Candyland does feel like dressed up shoots and ladders. Right.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And I think because for me, I grew up playing
- 22:44Speaker 2: Candyland in lieu of that. I'm going to give the
- 22:47Speaker 2: tie to Candyland, but you're right. Honorable mention. Oh, well,
- 22:51Speaker 2: I shoots and ladders.
- 22:52Speaker 3: All right, Taylor, put it on the pole is Candyland,
- 22:54Speaker 3: a dressed up shoot. shoots and ladders.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Go Joe.
- 22:57Speaker 1: The Candyland shoots and ladders debate is the same thing
- 23:00Speaker 1: that the New York Giants are having right now. Jameis
- 23:02Speaker 1: Winston and JJ McCarthy are the same quarterback.
- 23:04Speaker 3: You see what he did there?
- 23:05Speaker 2: JJ McCarthy is just the younger, newer version.
- 23:08Speaker 3: He got us a football.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Wouldn't it be a beautiful passing of the guard? If
- 23:13Speaker 2: that just became the way going forward, like, cause I
- 23:16Speaker 2: always say you need line of demarcation quarterbacks. Like JJ
- 23:20Speaker 2: McCarthy is going to be that guy you bring into
- 23:21Speaker 2: training camp. And if your incumbent can't beat out JJ McCarthy,
- 23:25Speaker 2: you know, you're going to be going back to the
- 23:27Speaker 2: well on quarterback in the future. But I wish more
- 23:30Speaker 2: guys would embrace this too. Like Ryan Fitzpatrick had this
- 23:33Speaker 2: for years and now Jamis Winston where, Hey, we're at
- 23:36Speaker 2: least going to be fun. Yeah. I don't know if
- 23:38Speaker 2: we'll be consistently good, but we'll definitely be interesting.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Gojo, put us there. I was saying yesterday that Notre
- 23:45Speaker 4: Dame was robbed. You know I'm conditioned to make fun
- 23:47Speaker 4: of Notre Dame. I don't want them to win. I
- 23:49Speaker 4: don't wish good things upon the Notre Dame football program,
- 23:53Speaker 4: but they were robbed against BYU.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's one of those things. Two things can be true, right?
- 23:59Speaker 2: Notre Dame didn't play well enough in the rest of
- 24:01Speaker 2: the game in critical moments where they had real opportunities
- 24:04Speaker 2: to win the game, and so that deserves to be
- 24:06Speaker 2: the main headline. But this is also just one of
- 24:08Speaker 2: those things that's undeniable. I understand and have seen people
- 24:12Speaker 2: arguing strongly on the side of that play took four seconds,
- 24:16Speaker 2: clock started late, yada, yada. The Big 12 officiating crew
- 24:20Speaker 2: came out after and said, we got this wrong, point blank, period.
- 24:24Speaker 2: They didn't take a day to review it. They're like, oh, no.
- 24:26Speaker 2: This was quick. All the, I mean, you know, this
- 24:29Speaker 2: officials tend to stick together and the ones that we
- 24:32Speaker 2: have that are a part of these broadcast booths. And
- 24:34Speaker 2: I forget which of the now named broadcast booth officials
- 24:37Speaker 2: came out and called this an embarrassment to officiating. It's
- 24:40Speaker 2: okay to say, Hey, this part was pretty cut and die.
- 24:43Speaker 2: They should have had another play to potentially win the
- 24:45Speaker 2: game and BYU still absolutely earned and deserved that victory.
- 24:49Speaker 2: I do feel like all those things can be true,
- 24:50Speaker 2: but yeah, there should have been one second left.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Do you think the playoff committee will factor stuff like
- 24:55Speaker 4: that in when they're making their decisions? Not that Notre
- 24:57Speaker 4: Dame is flirting with not making the playoffs. I think
- 24:59Speaker 4: they're firmly entrenched. They still have Miami on that schedule.
- 25:03Speaker 4: But do you think the committee will take the time
- 25:05Speaker 4: to kind of consider things like that?
- 25:07Speaker 2: So that was supposed to be part of what the
- 25:10Speaker 2: human committee was here to do was, A, deal with injuries.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Did a team play differently after inserting or losing a
- 25:17Speaker 2: quarterback to injury or something like that? But then I
- 25:20Speaker 2: think to also account for these kinds of things and
- 25:23Speaker 2: what they saw. Unfortunately, you know, Notre Dame is kind
- 25:25Speaker 2: of well-versed in this. I mean, last year you look
- 25:28Speaker 2: at the end of the Texas A & M game
- 25:29Speaker 2: with the miss holding call and all these different things
- 25:31Speaker 2: that have popped up here. And I think you factor
- 25:34Speaker 2: it in. If all things are close and Lord knows
- 25:36Speaker 2: in a year where college football is trending as chaotic
- 25:39Speaker 2: as we've ever seen it, especially coming off, maybe the
- 25:41Speaker 2: most chaotic weekend that we've seen in quite some time.
- 25:45Speaker 2: It could be a factor, but still for Notre Dame,
- 25:47Speaker 2: like you pointed out, they're entrenched right now, but if
- 25:51Speaker 2: they lose that Miami game at home, it's an uphill
- 25:54Speaker 2: battle after that. You're in the exact same spot you
- 25:57Speaker 2: were in last year where you'd be reliant on a
- 25:59Speaker 2: bunch of other people to have results that get you
- 26:02Speaker 2: to the point where now arguing and saying, well, they
- 26:04Speaker 2: should have had one second left, it was a tough
- 26:06Speaker 2: road environment, all these caveats that you'd rather not deal
- 26:10Speaker 2: in if you're a team that's actually serious about winning
- 26:12Speaker 2: a championship.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Gojo, I've been pretty anti-playoff expansion, but after you get
- 26:17Speaker 1: a weekend like last weekend where there's a ton of upsets,
- 26:20Speaker 1: isn't that a pretty good argument for the expanded playoffs
- 26:23Speaker 1: where the line between 1 and 24 has probably never
- 26:27Speaker 1: been smaller in this era of college football with NIL
- 26:29Speaker 1: kind of evening the gap?
- 26:33Speaker 2: In theory, yes. If you were the people on the
- 26:35Speaker 2: side of a 2014 playoff, It's kind of like we
- 26:38Speaker 2: talk about Major League Baseball right now. Having the two
- 26:40Speaker 2: markets that you have in the World Series is awesome
- 26:42Speaker 2: if you're the players, in theory, going into a negotiation
- 26:45Speaker 2: where ownership is saying, you know, teams are able to
- 26:49Speaker 2: spend too big. We need a salary cap. And now
- 26:50Speaker 2: you can point, look and say, look, it's Tampa Bay
- 26:53Speaker 2: and Milwaukee in the World Series. But I still think that. That,
- 26:58Speaker 2: to me, does not balance out what you would do
- 27:01Speaker 2: to the regular season, expanding the tournament to this size.
- 27:05Speaker 2: I understand the comparisons people want to make to the
- 27:07Speaker 2: FCS version of the sport, but it's just for so
- 27:11Speaker 2: long been built so differently that I think asking people
- 27:15Speaker 2: to change their relationship with the regular season that's been
- 27:19Speaker 2: the sell for college football so long, to me, is...
- 27:23Speaker 2: dangerous to the long-term health of the sport yes and
- 27:26Speaker 2: to me didn't seem necessary especially given the limited financial
- 27:30Speaker 2: increase that you get.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Off this uh that great Saturday we just had a
- 27:34Speaker 4: year or two from now that great Saturday will be
- 27:37Speaker 4: for the most part meaningless I mean and so I
- 27:39Speaker 4: think that's what Gojo would say listen it's one thing
- 27:42Speaker 4: Gojo this is what I well not meaningless but it's
- 27:44Speaker 4: one thing for Auburn to beat Georgia isolated Saturday afternoon
- 27:48Speaker 4: they get it done It's another thing to expect a
- 27:50Speaker 4: team like Auburn to go to a playoff, be the
- 27:53Speaker 4: 24th seed, beat Georgia, and then have to beat Bama,
- 27:57Speaker 4: and then have to beat Notre Dame, and then have
- 27:59Speaker 4: to beat Miami.
- 28:00Speaker 3: It's not going to happen, you know?
- 28:02Speaker 2: No, that certainly is a low likelihood, especially if we
- 28:06Speaker 2: talk about the top eight seeds getting a bye and
- 28:09Speaker 2: all these different things that would swing that. To your point,
- 28:12Speaker 2: a sport where I think the— Depth is still catching
- 28:16Speaker 2: up to the level of attrition it takes and the
- 28:18Speaker 2: road it takes to get through the postseason there, but
- 28:20Speaker 2: that's the other part of this that's tough for me, though,
- 28:23Speaker 2: is I hear the point of there won't be the
- 28:26Speaker 2: stakes attached to each regular season game in the way
- 28:28Speaker 2: that we're used to, where we're just robbing Peter to
- 28:30Speaker 2: pay Paul, right? It's like when me and my dad
- 28:32Speaker 2: play blackjack together and one of our piles starts to
- 28:34Speaker 2: grow and it's all kind of coming back to the
- 28:36Speaker 2: same family. We're taking all the good games that we
- 28:39Speaker 2: used to get in September and October and just moving
- 28:42Speaker 2: them to December and January in different wrapping. We're waiting
- 28:46Speaker 2: longer to get there and having the weather, the storm
- 28:48Speaker 2: of weaker out of conference slates or things that don't matter.
- 28:51Speaker 2: But like, again, you zoom in on every Saturday and
- 28:53Speaker 2: this is the bailout that playoff expansion folks always get
- 28:57Speaker 2: is they know we'll keep watching because, Hey, yeah, Georgia
- 29:00Speaker 2: wasn't eliminated, but but that was electric. All the games
- 29:04Speaker 2: this weekend were electric. Each individual Saturday still has a
- 29:07Speaker 2: ton of meaning to anyone who's in the stadium, anyone
- 29:10Speaker 2: who's got feelings attached or a relationship to that team
- 29:13Speaker 2: and their alma mater and stuff like that. It still
- 29:15Speaker 2: means a lot, but removing the stakes from that over time,
- 29:19Speaker 2: I do think is a net negative for the sport.
- 29:22Speaker 4: I want to talk some NFL with you, and we'll
- 29:23Speaker 4: do so in just a minute here. Gino Toretto was
- 29:26Speaker 4: on with us yesterday. And he said he thought that
- 29:29Speaker 4: Florida State, it was actually a catch that the idea
- 29:31Speaker 4: that the referees didn't even fathom that maybe hey, it
- 29:35Speaker 4: was a catch and tie goes to the guy who
- 29:37Speaker 4: caught the ball to him. As a former Hurricane who
- 29:40Speaker 4: won a Heisman Trophy at two national championships, I was
- 29:44Speaker 4: shocked to hear him say it. He also said it's
- 29:46Speaker 4: not a good look that Michael Irvin is celebrating with
- 29:48Speaker 4: a referee after the game.
- 29:50Speaker 3: But regardless, we digress.
- 29:51Speaker 4: What did you think of that call, that final couple
- 29:54Speaker 4: of plays there, Florida State-Miami?
- 29:55Speaker 2: What a game, man. Yeah, it was an incredible game.
- 29:59Speaker 2: And kind of like we talked about, you know, I
- 30:01Speaker 2: think in a similar vein to what we talked about
- 30:04Speaker 2: with the Notre Dame-BYU game, and quite honestly, I think
- 30:07Speaker 2: the nature and the magnitude of the Notre Dame-BYU game
- 30:10Speaker 2: kind of obscured this result in this conversation around the
- 30:14Speaker 2: end of this game and how disappointing it was that
- 30:16Speaker 2: officiating crept into this moment in such a big way
- 30:21Speaker 2: that people are going to forget about in weeks to come,
- 30:23Speaker 2: but absolutely was, you know, it felt wrong in that situation.
- 30:26Speaker 2: And I'm sure in hindsight, even more so.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Gojo, the one fan base that has gotten the
- 30:30Speaker 1: wrath of, of Stu gots this past week has been
- 30:33Speaker 1: the Indiana fan base because Indiana is upset losing to
- 30:37Speaker 1: Ohio state. And Stu gots his argument is basically the,
- 30:40Speaker 1: Indiana fans haven't earned the right to be upset losing
- 30:43Speaker 1: to a top-five team.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Listen, I understand Ohio State loses to Michigan. The fans
- 30:47Speaker 4: look distraught. They're upset. They have every right to be.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Indiana is on top of the football world. They should
- 30:53Speaker 4: just be happy to be close with Ohio State. Walk
- 30:56Speaker 4: out with a smile on your face.
- 31:00Speaker 2: It is amazing how quickly you move into a different
- 31:04Speaker 2: tax bracket and just start feeling different forever. I mean, Stugatz,
- 31:08Speaker 2: I've had Notre Dame fans again. I take the internet
- 31:11Speaker 2: with a grain of salt in this day and age,
- 31:12Speaker 2: but I've seen people legitimately saying like, oh yeah, you know,
- 31:15Speaker 2: we're going to keep an eye out on Marcus Freeman.
- 31:17Speaker 2: I'm sorry. What? It is amazing how people start to
- 31:22Speaker 2: think that they are entitled to so much more than
- 31:25Speaker 2: they actually are. But in this case, I understand it
- 31:27Speaker 2: with Indiana. That's awesome that they've reset expectations already. And
- 31:30Speaker 2: the fact that they expect, I mean, that might be,
- 31:33Speaker 2: forget the on-field stuff that's gone on. that might be
- 31:37Speaker 2: the biggest win for Kurt Cignetti is he has not
- 31:40Speaker 2: only changed the way his players think about winning and
- 31:43Speaker 2: approach these games, approach their expectations, he's changed the way
- 31:47Speaker 2: the fan base is allowed to think about these games.
- 31:50Speaker 2: And considering what we saw, I can't blame them for
- 31:53Speaker 2: feeling that way. I mean, that... That missed shot and
- 31:57Speaker 2: missed connection between Josh Hoover and Nick Marsh on a
- 32:00Speaker 2: throw that sailed a little wide and Nick Marsh's feet
- 32:02Speaker 2: couldn't toe tap in bounds. The look on his face
- 32:06Speaker 2: is as haunted as I saw a player all weekend long.
- 32:09Speaker 2: So I can't blame Indiana fans. Good for you guys.
- 32:12Speaker 2: This is all your world right now. Kurt Cignetti has
- 32:14Speaker 2: helped make it for you and enjoy living in it.
- 32:16Speaker 2: I'm jealous.
- 32:17Speaker 4: He's changed the way fans react.
- 32:18Speaker 2: It's ridiculous.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Listen, that national championship, they should be happy for a decade.
- 32:22Speaker 4: 11 years from now, they want to be upset if
- 32:25Speaker 4: they maintain this level of play. They want to be
- 32:27Speaker 4: upset that they lost to Ohio State at home. I'm
- 32:29Speaker 4: fine with it. For the next 10 years, just celebrate
- 32:32Speaker 4: what you won last year. It was the worst program
- 32:34Speaker 4: in the history of college football, period.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Honestly, that part I do agree with because I've always
- 32:39Speaker 2: said to people, Notre Dame had a much richer, deeper
- 32:42Speaker 2: championship history, obviously, than Indiana, but it's been a dry
- 32:46Speaker 2: well since I came onto this earth, and our last
- 32:48Speaker 2: title being 1988. I said to me, if Notre Dame
- 32:51Speaker 2: won a championship, you can lose for the next decade. Yes,
- 32:55Speaker 2: thank you. Whatever happens after that, I got one year
- 32:57Speaker 2: of championships here. I got one that I saw with
- 32:59Speaker 2: my own two eyes. I'm sorry. I'm desperate at this point.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Notre Dame lacrosse winning back-to-back titles was awesome, and I
- 33:05Speaker 2: will always cherish them and thank them forever. But I
- 33:08Speaker 2: need the team that I suited up for to just
- 33:10Speaker 2: get one, and then anything that happens after that, I'm
- 33:12Speaker 2: with you, is gravy. Yes.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Nick, for the remainder of time, we're good.
- 33:17Speaker 2: We are good. I was just going to ask. I
- 33:19Speaker 2: have to imagine that's got to be the feeling amongst
- 33:21Speaker 2: Knicks fans, right?
- 33:22Speaker 4: For me, it is because I'm older and I got
- 33:24Speaker 4: my championship. Taylor's greedy and he wants more. I'm thinking
- 33:28Speaker 4: back to back.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Yeah, he's actually mad.
- 33:29Speaker 4: He won't admit it, but he's mad at Brunson for
- 33:32Speaker 4: doing Saturday Night Live.
- 33:33Speaker 3: He wants him focused on the prize, you know?
- 33:37Speaker 1: You mentioned anything could happen afterwards but we've been asking
- 33:41Speaker 1: the hypothetical to people your team is guaranteed let's say
- 33:44Speaker 1: Notre Dame your team is guaranteed a national title in
- 33:47Speaker 1: year five but year one through four your biggest rival
- 33:51Speaker 1: so let's say USC wins four straight titles USC goes
- 33:55Speaker 1: on like a dynastic run but you're guaranteed a title
- 33:58Speaker 1: in the fifth year do you take it.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Yeah I mean, I guess what's the alternative? Like if
- 34:03Speaker 2: you presented another situation where it was like, hey, your
- 34:07Speaker 2: rival won't get it, but you've got a 50-50 shot
- 34:10Speaker 2: of doing it in that time period. Maybe, but at
- 34:13Speaker 2: the end of the day, as much as I dislike
- 34:15Speaker 2: my rival, I like me even more. And again, given
- 34:18Speaker 2: the gap in championships that I have not experienced as
- 34:21Speaker 2: a person. Whatever it takes. Honestly, I had to live
- 34:26Speaker 2: that anyway. The whole early 2000s when I was watching
- 34:29Speaker 2: USC win the title every other year, for God's sake,
- 34:31Speaker 2: with the best teams and the best player I've ever
- 34:33Speaker 2: seen in Reggie Bush. Like, yeah, no, I would sign
- 34:35Speaker 2: up for that because I had to do it unwillingly
- 34:37Speaker 2: my whole life.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Yes, if I asked your dad when he was playing, hey,
- 34:40Speaker 4: the Cowboys could have went four straight, but I guarantee
- 34:42Speaker 4: you that fifth year, you're getting one with the Eagles.
- 34:45Speaker 2: He'd take it even while playing. He'd take it in
- 34:48Speaker 2: a heartbeat. My dad would scoff at the mere notion
- 34:52Speaker 2: of that question because it feels like it's a branch
- 34:55Speaker 2: off the tree of would you rather make it to
- 34:58Speaker 2: the championship or get smoked or not make it at all,
- 35:01Speaker 2: which my dad always... always balks at as someone that
- 35:03Speaker 2: he has always reminded us never got to that in either,
- 35:06Speaker 2: you know, that college or the pro level of the sport.
- 35:09Speaker 2: So yeah, he'd sign up for that heartbeat.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Yeah. No doubt.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Taylor and I were discussing the Rams and the possibility
- 35:16Speaker 4: and probability at this point, when you consider, when you
- 35:19Speaker 4: look at the landscape of the NFC, it appears go
- 35:22Speaker 4: to the Rams are going to struggle to make it
- 35:23Speaker 4: to the playoffs.
- 35:24Speaker 2: You agree? It's going to be a struggle, their best
- 35:28Speaker 2: opportunity to kind of get that. The division is out, right?
- 35:32Speaker 2: The 49ers have such a stranglehold on that so early
- 35:35Speaker 2: at this point. That's gone. So your only hope is
- 35:37Speaker 2: as a wildcard team. The only advantage you have is
- 35:41Speaker 2: the NFC East obviously isn't going to get two teams in.
- 35:43Speaker 2: We don't expect the NFC South to probably be able
- 35:46Speaker 2: to pull that off. And so it's really just going
- 35:48Speaker 2: to be what is the North shakeout like right now
- 35:51Speaker 2: as you've gotten Caleb Williams healthier and all this different stuff.
- 35:54Speaker 2: So you've got the opportunity, but man, with the Seahawks
- 35:58Speaker 2: and the way that we know they can play defense
- 35:59Speaker 2: and the way you're hurt right now, the next four
- 36:01Speaker 2: games for the Rams have to pretty much be 4-0.
- 36:05Speaker 2: And to be fair, it's possible. It's at Raiders, home
- 36:08Speaker 2: versus the Chargers at Washington, and then on the road
- 36:11Speaker 2: against the Cardinals team that just came into your house
- 36:13Speaker 2: and beat you. winnable games, but you've basically got to
- 36:16Speaker 2: go 4-0 in that stretch without your best red zone
- 36:19Speaker 2: threat wide receiver in Devontae Adams, without two interior defensive linemen,
- 36:24Speaker 2: still waiting to see what's going to happen with Miles
- 36:26Speaker 2: Garrett and Matthew Stafford looking definitely a step back from
- 36:29Speaker 2: the MVP season a year ago. So it's tough sledding, man.
- 36:32Speaker 4: If Aaron Donald, knowing what he knows now, could un-retire,
- 36:36Speaker 4: could go back and just stay retired, do you think
- 36:38Speaker 4: he'd do it?
- 36:40Speaker 2: Probably.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Yes.
- 36:41Speaker 2: I'd have to– I'd have to imagine an honest moment, right? Like,
- 36:44Speaker 2: this isn't what he signed up for.
- 36:45Speaker 3: No. He lost to Jacoby Brissett.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Right. Well, and like, you know, when we were all
- 36:52Speaker 2: selling this in August, it was... you've got the best
- 36:56Speaker 2: defensive player in the world, and then you're going to
- 36:58Speaker 2: be able to throw Aaron Donald in there on third
- 37:01Speaker 2: downs and stuff and put him on the same side. Now,
- 37:03Speaker 2: not only has he not had the best defensive player
- 37:06Speaker 2: in the world on the team, but now two more
- 37:08Speaker 2: guys in his position room got hurt. So that's even
- 37:10Speaker 2: more work potentially on the plate for a guy that
- 37:13Speaker 2: we already saw it kind of strategically sat in terms
- 37:17Speaker 2: of managing his body at this point in his life. So, yeah,
- 37:20Speaker 2: I'd have to imagine in an honest moment, this is
- 37:23Speaker 2: definitely not the experience that he signed up for.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Do you think Miles Garrett regrets leaving the– do you
- 37:27Speaker 4: think he'd go back to Cleveland?
- 37:32Speaker 3: What a strange game, the NFL, man.
- 37:34Speaker 4: He left Cleveland to win a Super Bowl in L.A.,
- 37:38Speaker 4: and Cleveland is in first place in their division, the Rams,
- 37:41Speaker 4: in last.
- 37:43Speaker 2: It's got to hurt deep down in places that he
- 37:46Speaker 2: doesn't talk about at parties. I still in the long
- 37:51Speaker 2: run would bet that Los Angeles is still closer to
- 37:55Speaker 2: actually winning a Super Bowl than the Browns are right now. Agreed.
- 37:59Speaker 2: But that being said, like. The Browns have really acquitted
- 38:04Speaker 2: themselves well. The defense still rips. Todd Munkin, I think,
- 38:07Speaker 2: has looked awesome as a head coach. They've got an
- 38:09Speaker 2: exciting young– if they can go out and add, you know,
- 38:13Speaker 2: one or two more competent offensive linemen and a hot–
- 38:17Speaker 2: guys that are building towards the high end, younger guys
- 38:19Speaker 2: that can join the core with Spencer Fano that you're starting.
- 38:21Speaker 2: And then you get your quarterback of the future in there.
- 38:23Speaker 2: That's a really exciting team to me in terms of
- 38:27Speaker 2: the potential. Yes. The conversation around Deshaun Watson is tough.
- 38:30Speaker 2: I don't think he's been the reason they've been winning
- 38:32Speaker 2: all these games. I think he's kept his hands at
- 38:35Speaker 2: 10 and two on the wheel, made some plays, especially
- 38:37Speaker 2: evading sacks in the pocket that help. But it's still
- 38:40Speaker 2: not to the point where I'd say, yeah, Miles Garrett,
- 38:43Speaker 2: you made the wrong decision, but this is definitely the
- 38:46Speaker 2: juncture where if you're a Browns fan or a Browns player,
- 38:48Speaker 2: take the victory lap, man. We know they've been few
- 38:50Speaker 2: and far between, so enjoy the moment.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Gojo, it feels like a big if, but if the
- 38:54Speaker 1: 49ers get back all their injured guys, which team would
- 38:58Speaker 1: you have more confidence in winning the Super Bowl, the
- 39:01Speaker 1: 49ers or the Chiefs?
- 39:04Speaker 2: I would still probably take the Chiefs right this second,
- 39:08Speaker 2: but Especially, I mean, really the ones you're counting on
- 39:11Speaker 2: getting back is like if you get Nick Bosa back
- 39:13Speaker 2: and Mike Evans back, because Mike Evans has been such
- 39:16Speaker 2: a difference maker in the ways that we all expected.
- 39:19Speaker 2: But at his age, you couldn't take for granted remarkable longevity.
- 39:22Speaker 2: So if they get him back, that's really the issue.
- 39:25Speaker 2: And then for Kansas City, you know, can they get
- 39:29Speaker 2: Rishi Rice? back at some point and Xavier worthy can
- 39:32Speaker 2: Xavier worthy stay healthy. Cause I do think. the element
- 39:35Speaker 2: that you lost with Taequann Thornton going down in the
- 39:37Speaker 2: deep passing game was a really underrated storyline outside of
- 39:41Speaker 2: the Kenneth Walker stuff. You would finally stretch the dimensions
- 39:44Speaker 2: of the field again with the deep pass in a
- 39:46Speaker 2: way that made everything underneath a little bit easier for
- 39:49Speaker 2: resurgent Travis Kelsey, you know, coming in the season, feeling
- 39:52Speaker 2: the best he's felt in a while. And then the
- 39:54Speaker 2: run game, getting some advantageous looks. So the, I do
- 39:57Speaker 2: think for both sides, it's going to be who's healthy
- 39:59Speaker 2: at the right time. But to me, Ty is still
- 40:01Speaker 2: going to go to the team that's been there and
- 40:02Speaker 2: done that in the championship when it's all said and done.
- 40:04Speaker 2: And the 49ers team that's unfortunately come up short against
- 40:08Speaker 2: them multiple times in this regime.
- 40:10Speaker 3: Two quick ones.
- 40:11Speaker 4: We'll get you out of here. The Gullicks 10 to
- 40:12Speaker 4: noon Eastern on ESPN Radio. Texans, best two and four
- 40:16Speaker 4: team in NFL history.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Man, it certainly feels like they're up there. Like the
- 40:21Speaker 2: defense has given up a ton of yards too. Like
- 40:23Speaker 2: that's not a group that's looked like themselves, but you'd
- 40:25Speaker 2: figure out what the pieces of all would eventually get there.
- 40:27Speaker 2: And CJ Stroud making himself more money as each week
- 40:30Speaker 2: goes along every week, kind of uncorks one where you're like, Oh, okay.
- 40:34Speaker 2: He's back. There were a couple of throws in London
- 40:36Speaker 2: that were ridiculous.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Gojo, yesterday I was making the argument that it feels
- 40:40Speaker 1: like the Panthers are running away with the NFC South
- 40:42Speaker 1: and then Stugatz pushed back saying they're three and two.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Nobody ever has run away with the division at three
- 40:48Speaker 1: and two.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Can you run away with the division at three and two?
- 40:51Speaker 1: No.
- 40:54Speaker 2: If there was any division where you could, it might
- 40:56Speaker 2: be the NFC South. I still would say no. Like,
- 40:59Speaker 2: You know, Atlanta, as long as Pennix is upright, is
- 41:03Speaker 2: really interesting to me. That defense has absorbed a lot
- 41:06Speaker 2: of losses and still come out swinging up front. But
- 41:09Speaker 2: the Panthers are.
- 41:10Speaker 1: As close as you can get to running away with
- 41:12Speaker 1: the division at 3-2, even if I'm not quite ready
- 41:15Speaker 1: to join on that one yet.
- 41:16Speaker 3: All right, I lied.
- 41:17Speaker 2: One more.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Vikings, worst 5-0 team of all time.
- 41:22Speaker 2: I would have said that before we saw Kyler Murray
- 41:26Speaker 2: and Justin Jefferson on the field together and extended reps.
- 41:29Speaker 2: That was what we had been waiting for, right? They
- 41:30Speaker 2: had played one and a half quarters or whatever it
- 41:32Speaker 2: was together in the first three, four games of the season.
- 41:35Speaker 2: And then they got back out there and it said, okay,
- 41:37Speaker 2: that was, that was, they're sort of the bizarro Cowboys
- 41:40Speaker 2: and Bengals where we said, hey, the defense just needs
- 41:43Speaker 2: to be good.
- 41:44Speaker 3: Good.
- 41:45Speaker 2: And then the offense will take care of the rest.
- 41:46Speaker 2: For the Vikings, it's, hey, the offense just needs to
- 41:48Speaker 2: go out there and be good. And that defense is
- 41:51Speaker 2: going to take you to some pretty fun places. They're
- 41:53Speaker 2: checking that box right now. Yes.
- 41:55Speaker 4: Do you think Taylor's going to cry tonight when they
- 41:58Speaker 4: raise the banner at Madison Square Garden?
- 42:00Speaker 2: A hundred percent. He should. I know you didn't like
- 42:03Speaker 2: the SNL bit. One of my really good friends is
- 42:06Speaker 2: a Knicks fan and he had tears in his eyes
- 42:08Speaker 2: watching Jalen Brunson and the rest of the Knicks hosting
- 42:11Speaker 2: Saturday Night Live. So I'd imagine he's going to be
- 42:13Speaker 2: bawling for this.
- 42:14Speaker 4: Yes, but God forbid they get off to a one
- 42:16Speaker 4: in seven start.
- 42:17Speaker 3: Your friend is going to rip him for doing it.
- 42:19Speaker 2: I'll fire Mike Brown.
- 42:23Speaker 4: The goal, extend to noon Eastern on ESPN radio.
- 42:27Speaker 3: We love you, buddy. Thank you for doing this. Say
- 42:29Speaker 3: hi to dad for us.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Will do. Love you guys. All right. See you, man.
