- 0:00[SPEAKER_05]: Happy Monday or as close as we possibly can be after that Cleveland Brown's game yesterday here on the Big Play Cleveland show.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_05]: Let's get right on into some Cleveland headlines, Jack O'Rourke, Ryan Tyler, and we got the greatest cornerback in Cleveland Brown's franchise history.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_05]: Hanford Dixon sitting here with us to talk about that game yesterday.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo
- 0:36[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, Hamford, we sat in here literally a week ago.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_05]: Probably right about now, Ryan, I would say.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_05]: And I asked you a question, Hamford as a guy that was around when the Cleveland Browns were awesome, has not been the case in my lifetime at all.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_05]: How much does a pain you just see this franchise stuck in this just endless loop of, I was gonna say, mediocrity, but not even mediocrity.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_05]: Worst of the mediocrity, how you feeling after yesterday?
- 0:56[SPEAKER_05]: Probably didn't get a whole ton better, Hamford.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_01]: It was, you know, I could tell you this.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: I was a little bit surprised of what happened yesterday.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: I was surprised of the outcome, I was surprised of how we played.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: I went into that ball game, and I don't know why.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: I went into this ball game thinking that, you know, we're talking about the Jacksonville Jaguards.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't care if this team went on a winning streak last year, they won eight straight games.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, they lost in the playoffs, they went 13 and 4, but for some reason when you say the Jacksonville Jaguars, I think that we can beat this football team.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: But boy was I wrong.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, things just went wrong in a hurry with these guys.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was a little bit shocked.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: I was really, really shocked on how we played.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know whether it was the heat or what it was, but we just didn't get it done.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: And we pretty much got embarrassed.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, I feel like the fan of a Mac team in the first half.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was, it got ugly and it was ugly.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, obviously during the course of the ball game, we scored a touchdown toward the end.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was just a beautiful pass from Watson that he threw.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, that made his half ten points, but the game wasn't close.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, at that time,
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: You had Trevor was out of the ball game and they ain't pretty much taken all the starters all because they didn't want to get Anyone hurt, but it was just It was just a terrible terrible game, but I'll say I'll say this.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: I
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: it was I'm gonna give them uh uh uh i'm gonna say that it was the first game okay it was the first game um uh i'm i'm i'm not giving up on them uh me and i'm just uh i'm just a die hard i'm a die hard uh brawler dog pound for life you know that i always say but jack dance to your question i was really really disappointed just today
- 3:04[SPEAKER_04]: And for everybody's going to come in today and argue about Deshawn Watson, and you've sat in this seat a couple of weeks ago, and you've talked about how you wanted to see Shidorah Sanders get the starting job, and I'm sure we'll get that soon enough, but just looking at yesterday's game, how much of what went wrong yesterday do you think can get fixed by having good quarterback play?
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you you guys gonna think I'm crazy because you you're exactly right when you know, I've been talking about I was a little bit disappointed when she do or we didn't name should do her the starter, but
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm willing to give this guy another start.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm not going to call for his head right now.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm willing to give him another start to see what he could do.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: I tell you where was disappointed late in the ball game.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you guys can tell me why we kept running him out there at the end of the ball game when they've taken their starter out, Trevor.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: and uh... not uh... throw a shudder in the ballgame let him get a few snaps regardless of who he's getting the snaps wit let i thought he should have been out there and but we kept up for some reason we kept watching out there to the end of the ballgame i i was a little bit puzzle by that but you know i heard all the chance i mean in the stadium everybody's uh... screaming uh... pretty much uh... should force your door in the ballgame and i can understand why
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, but I'm willing to give Todd Mumpkin and his staff a little leeway, a little bit more to let Watson get another start and see how he performs.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_04]: So, a lot of people, and for kind of went into that game, not expecting the most for the Sean Watson, but I think if you ask a lot of people, did they think it was going to be that bad?
- 4:48[SPEAKER_04]: I think a lot of people would have said no.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_04]: But it sounds like to you, you're not bringing in that leash a little bit, even a little bit, regardless of how bad the Sean was.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think if you guys heard Todd's press conference pretty much after the game, you know, he really emphasized that it wasn't all on Watson.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: He said, you know,
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: really, a lot of phases in that ball game, his football team didn't play well.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he's correct with that because you look at that offensive line.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, let's just face it.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: When you're planning to get to the Jaguars, those guys up front, I mean, they are
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome, they are a beast and they played extremely extremely well I mean we wasn't really able to run the football We couldn't we couldn't protect but yeah, I'm not calling for us.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: I tell you where I really have I thought it was gonna be a concern and it really was a concern after watching yesterday's ball game
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm talking about that defense.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Rudy, because we really guys, we really miss Jim.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, because I don't think, you know, obviously, we had a rookie defensive coordinator, and it really showed yesterday doing the course of the ball game, because they were able to do everything they wanted to do to us on offense.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they were able to run the football.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they were getting the ball running at probably nine, eight yards or
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, what the hell is going on here?
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was just, and then they were able to throw it.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_05]: How much green grass is there?
- 6:29[SPEAKER_05]: Every single time Trevor Lawrence dropped back, like, they're catching a ball.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_05]: There's going within a nautical mile.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: Guys, Trevor Lawrence, let me tell you something.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: You talking about your typical quarterback.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, a guy in the 65, I mean, he's, he can throw it.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: He can run it, and he is just getting better and better.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: and better and you you could tell I mean every time he he he he he brought his team out there I mean they were moving the football and they were scoring points.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean Trevor Lawrence is your typical quarterback You think there's a way now I tell you what I would do if we could take uh uh the Sean Watts and
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: and they'll give us Trevor, but I know that's the, that's just wishful thing.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_05]: And for you, you have to, you have to attack 16 for you.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: We have to give our whole team for that death.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_05]: Well, let's talk about that quarterback though, the Sean Watson for a second before we get deeper into what went down with the defense.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_05]: Hey, and for you, when you were talking earlier, I was listening real careful to your words.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_05]: I heard that you said, I'm willing to give to Sean Watson another start, not a couple of starts.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_05]: Let me ask you hand for your beloved by the Browns fan base.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_05]: I was with you at the cheat game two years ago.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_05]: There's a line out to the longer than the freaking concession stand, it comes to a high-to-hand for Dixon, right?
- 7:44[SPEAKER_05]: You know the pulse of this fan base.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_05]: If to Sean Watson, just put to turn burger out there next week, like he did yesterday, is there any world where the Browns can consciously put him on the field week three in front of those home fans?
- 7:57[SPEAKER_01]: no i i think there's absolutely you just can't do it and i just think this fan base is just fed up uh... because uh... i'll tell you guys this uh... yesterday i was out uh... at the uh... racino racing track and ponies yeah well i was out there signing autograph so i'm doing a gig out there
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I can't tell you how many people came up to me and how many people were disappointed with Todd naming Watson the starting quarterback.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they were just fed up and this was before pretty much before the game even started.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: Once the game started, I mean, it was just, it was just brutal.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: See,
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: You guys understand, but a lot of some of you listeners out there may not understand this.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: Browse fans are the most loyal fans in the world.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they've been with us when lose a draw.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they've been strictly behind this football team.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: And they're just fed up now.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think it comes to a time when they just want to see us compete.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_01]: They want to see us win some football games.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: And that's just not been happening.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, again, I'm with them.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: What happened yesterday?
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: and I'm sitting there and I'm signing some autographs to some people and all of a sudden I said what the hell seven they had seven points already I'm like how did this happen so fast obviously I taped the game and I go back and I rewatched the game once I get at home and and you know when I when I could take notes and things like that but
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: Man, these fans are just fed up and I understand they're beef and I understand whether they're coming from because right now they want to win ball game.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: Give an example, look at the AFC North.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I could tell you this in the AMC North, every team in the AMC North, one yesterday except one.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: Can you guess who that one team was?
- 9:54[SPEAKER_05]: Can you guys, I would venture about the Cleveland football Brown.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was the Browns, the Bengals one, the Ravens one, the, I can't even say their name.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: The, the, the, the, the, the, the, the,
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: the team up East every team in the MC North one and here we are again starting on at the bottom of the MC North and it just hurt and I feel for the fans.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I really do.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: I feel for because again, I've said it again.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: They're most loyal fans anywhere in the world.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_04]: Hanford, that's a perfect segue because I think for a lot of fans, it's gotten to this point.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_04]: And in your opinion, where is the line between a coach protecting his player publicly with the Sean Watts and I get it's one week, but then refusing to acknowledge that there is a real quarterback problem on this scene.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, one thing when I was watching it and when I listened to Todd's press conference and I understand what he's coming from, he's trying to protect his quarterback.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: But...
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to jump on him too bad, but I mean, it is a slippery slope though.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_05]: I think that's one thing you got to talk about because you can't with people like Cleveland who are intelligent sports stands especially the football Yeah, you can't just blatantly insult our intelligence and throw him out there week three just because you paid him ax amount of money You know like you at a certain point especially as Todd monkey and like just because you signed a three-year contract is head coach does not mean the Browns have to fulfill your contract and Nikki that coach for three years
- 11:27[SPEAKER_05]: you can't just go out there and be like, oh, yeah, nothing's wrong.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_05]: We'll be fine.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_05]: Get him next week.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_05]: It's one week.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, ever, ever, ever, a offensive line.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_05]: First time together to Sean doesn't play in two years.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_05]: We'll be, as come see us next week.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's why I said that's why I think I don't expect Todd to pull him after one start.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's an A name them start.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: I really don't.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's going to, he's going to, I'm pretty sure he's going to run him back out this coming week.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_05]: He's going to be the starting quarterback hand for the optics if it's Baker though.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_05]: What if he gets killed by Baker?
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: What happened suddenly?
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I mean, and you know, Tampa is going to be ready.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're going to be ready because obviously they just lost two sensei.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: and and they are going to be ready and bakers going to be a baker throw three pigs yesterday and three fondals three couple three turned over so it was fumbles and yeah you lost Mike Evans and you know I don't care they're going to be ready to go and you know he's got a gripe against us I mean bakers going to be ready to go against the Cleveland Browns because obviously we didn't we didn't keep him but
- 12:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting back to the question, I don't expect to, I don't expect to pull them this way.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's going to keep him in there.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be the start and quarterback, and then we'll go from that.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_05]: Real quick, sorry to cut you off, and do you think week three is the earliest?
- 12:45[SPEAKER_05]: It could happen, or do you think that there's a certain sample size that they would give to Sean no matter what?
- 12:50[SPEAKER_05]: Like, could it, do you think it could be like, okay, in arbitrary four games, and then we'll consider a move, or do you think it could happen as soon as week three at home?
- 12:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think if I think definitely it could happen a week three, but I think also at some point doing the ball game next Sunday, I think if Watson is not performing the way he
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: should perform if he's not moving this team the way I think he's the way that he thinks that he should move this team I would not be surprised if he doesn't pull him and not go with the shudder because guys I mean we have to find out whether or not this guy can play and he's going to be much much better.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think this year that he was last year because he's got another, I mean obviously the last year was this work of season.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: But I want to see him with all these weapons, these new weapons that we got on this team, talking about a ballster, talking about a KC and just a name with you.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: And finally, you know, watching a ballgame, I was wondering, I was saying, where the hell is hair of fanning June?
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, he started to come on a little bit and he had two or three receptions late in the ball game, but we got to get this thing going guys.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: We got to really really get this thing, get this, get this offense going because the offense, I think it's going to have to pick up the defense this year.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_04]: And for it, we'll get to talking about Tom Monke and we'll get to talk about the defense your specialty, but to stand quarterback for just another minute, they talked to pre-game about how the fans are obviously clamoring for Shador Sanders, but inside that locker room it's different.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_04]: They're bought in on Dishon Watson.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_04]: He's their starting quarterback.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_04]: They're going to ride with number four.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_04]: But after seeing a performance like that yesterday, it wasn't all rainbows and sunshine for the defense either certainly.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_04]: But do you think it gets harder and harder and harder each week for that locker room to continue being bought into Deshawn Watson?
- 14:43[SPEAKER_04]: And do you think after Disaster Class week one that could already start to be shifted in the locker room?
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm going to say this, you know, the players in the locker room know who should start and who shouldn't start.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: The players in the locker room are going to be behind you as long as you're doing your job.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: Let me tell you something.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't care if your name is hand for Dixon.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: I mean if if if if hand for Dixon the players up behind me 100%.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: But if I'm not doing my job, let me tell you something.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: The players you know, they're going to want my butt out of there.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's the same thing.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: And the same thing for Dishon.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: I mean,
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: players want to win ball games.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_01]: They don't care who's in there, but whoever's getting the job done, that two day won in there.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: But to answer your question, yes.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, they will change in a heartbeat.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: If some of them already haven't changed.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: But when you look at that, when you look at the game yesterday, there was so many areas, so many different positions where we just didn't get it done.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: And the quarterback just have to be the hotspot right now.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I said, I'll give him another
- 15:52[SPEAKER_05]: So I wanted to ask you a little bit more about Deshawn, and if there is quite literally one singular thing at all, you can take away his positive, and outside of the throat, the throat is nice.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_05]: But, Hanford, I think we talked about the last time Deshawn got a go, it was 24, I believe.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_05]: Okay, he needs to stop, stop drifting backwards in the pocket, 45 feet.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_05]: That seemed to still be an issue yesterday.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_05]: He needs to stop skipping balls of people's ankles, that's still seem to be an issue yesterday.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_05]: And obviously, through the pick on the first drive,
- 16:20[SPEAKER_05]: what can you take away because he didn't even hand for it.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_05]: I was told.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_05]: I was told all off season.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_05]: Shoulder Sanders can not get the Cleveland Brown set up at the line of scrimmage.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_05]: That's why shoulder Sanders can't be out there.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_05]: And then that ass heck goes out there and takes four pre-snap penalties and he had to use his timeouts for fun of fifth.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm going to say that I did see some things that he did well.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: I really did.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_01]: I, uh,
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: you know, the deep pass that he threw.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, was that to Boston?
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was yeah, the deep pass that he threw to Boston.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: I thought was just right on the money.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that was just an excellent pass.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: I was surprised to see that he was able to move a little bit better, scramble a little bit better because he was able to scramble and pick up some, pick up some first downs.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: He, the thing, you know, he's got to understand is and he knows this, he's got to make sure everybody on that offense is in the right place and they're wearing their supposed to be by the time that ball is going to snap.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: I look at, you remember during one course of the ball game where we, the 30s, the clock was running down, running down the shoulders, just clapping like this, you know, he's trying to get the center to snap the ball, the center didn't, and obviously we was hit with a penalty.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_01]: I look at the side line on that one too because they have to be watching that and they have to be able to call a time out in order to keep us from having a clock violation because you see it happen again.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_01]: The clock was running down and they caught it on from the sideline.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_01]: they call the time out.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm not going to put all this undish on.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this loss is not going to go strictly on him.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he understands and he knows that he's got to play better.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to put it on everybody else on that offense because they know that they have to play better.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_05]: So, hey, Andrew, if you got a pie chart of blame for yesterday, we'll do a Monday, segment through the pie chart of blame or success, depending on how the blue blue brown's finished.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_05]: If you're going to zero to 100, how are you assigning that blame on the pie chart for yesterday?
- 18:29[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, how much coaching, how much the team in general, how much the quarterback specifically?
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, again,
- 18:38[SPEAKER_05]: And I can't do a hundred students do as close as you can.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm just going to say this.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to say it this way.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to say it this way.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: Again, no one played well on that offense.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: No one.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't code.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: They got a coach better.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_01]: They got to play better.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: They in order for them to win football games.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: This is the national football league.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_01]: This is not college.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: This is not this is not preseason.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_01]: In the National Football League, once the season starts, you get the best of the best and of a team's best and you got to be up to the task and we were not up to the task yesterday.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to leave it at that.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_05]: Well, Hanford, I want to ask you to get you in trouble.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_05]: So I'm going to get you in trouble.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: Leave it at that right there.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_05]: Mom's lower than you.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not going to ask you to give any more blame pies or percentages, but Hanford, let's flip it over to the coaching because, whew.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_04]: Listen, I am not one that wants to see Todd Monk and be this lame duck one year transit coach.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_04]: Right coach.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_04]: But boy, yesterday was not a good start.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_04]: I think the biggest thing Hanford for me and a lot of people was, listen, sure the offense can take some time to get together, but it's the pre-snap penalties, and it's a lot of what we complained about with Kevin Stephansky and Hanford, it might have been worse yesterday under Todd Munk and your thoughts on his first game inside Coach of the Browns.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and also to as we we look at Todd is being this guru this offensive Genius and It didn't show that yesterday You exactly right because they couldn't get lined up they couldn't get the ball off in time I mean, it was just so many different they you could just
- 20:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I kind of felt bad for Todd yesterday because you can see the frustration in his face the way he was looking at his, you know, everything that was happening with his football team.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_01]: I guarantee you this.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: He never, I guarantee he never would have thought that his football team.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_01]: what he reacted, the way it reacted yesterday.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_01]: Because on offense, we were talking about, he can't wait because the Sean's having his great practice.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's since he's been taking all the reps.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: He's ready to go and defensively, these guys are gonna be violent.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_01]: They're gonna play violent and all that.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: None of that happened with this football team.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: This team got beat in all three phases, talking about offense, defense, and special teams.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_05]: And for we got a comment here on YouTube, they look like a D3 high school football team.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_05]: Do you think that's disrespectful to Will Be South?
- 21:04[SPEAKER_01]: You guys are brutal, man.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_00]: You guys are brutal, you are brutal, brutal, brutal, brutal.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: I thought you was talking about Ohio State there, Phil.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's another D3 team looking at that little event.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_01]: We're done, we're done.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: Don't go anywhere, we got the SEC handprint in the building.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_05]: Let me just talk about Ohio State there for a minute there.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_05]: Let's get out of the Browns defense.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_05]: We can get into the Buckeyes for handprint.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_04]: All right, Hanford, that Brown's defense yesterday was not something to be hold.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of questions.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_04]: You get rid of Jim Schwarz.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_04]: Why don't want to say get rid of, but he leaves because he wanted the head coach job.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_04]: And then you bring in Mike Routenberg and it did not look great.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_04]: Hanford, a lot of communication issues.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_04]: At what point do you throw away the game plan and say, guys, this is unacceptable.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_04]: We got to figure out a way to stop this team from scoring and give our offense a chance.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you, you could look at, you could look at a
- 21:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think it just looked like a couple of times that he was, uh, uh, I won't say, uh, and over his head, but, uh, the guys wasn't responding, uh, the way that he thought that they were going to be because, uh, uh, he was the one that said, hey, my guys are going to play, uh, violent.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to, they, they're really going to beat up, uh, other, pretty much going to beat up the other team.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I, I think, uh,
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: the guy that really didn't show up yesterday was verse because when you look at it I think when you look at his numbers I don't think he I don't think he had any pressures obviously I know he didn't have any sex or anything like that he just didn't he just didn't get it done and then I was a little bit of shock of Mason Graham
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: because of Mason, Mason got his first sack and that was his first sack guys, this is a second year and that was his first sack and he had a tackle for a loss also in the background.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't think and then you could tell that Carson's messenger, you could tell that he hasn't been practicing.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: you know what I put all this and I blame all this on practice because when you're practicing these guys they don't get they don't go they don't practice really really hard because they won't let them do anything in practice and I think it shows up in the game especially early in the season and then you look at that second there.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, man, this guy, uh, I think is Washington, or whatever, for them.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was shocked.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_05]: The defense knows he saw his last name all day long.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he was, uh, he was just, uh, an amazing, uh, wide-out right there.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, you know, you know,
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: They went at a little bit of Campbell a little bit because every time you turn around he was involved in a play and then then, you know, I said, I first thought they were going to get a stand away from then award.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: They were coming at him.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Trevor didn't mind he was playing the win and he used all the weapons that he had.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: So that's why I say it's a combination of everything.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: But I, I, this defense has got to play better because
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: If you guys look at it, our defense was a strong point in this ball club for the last couple years.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you're exactly right, Ryan.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: We missed Jim.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_04]: All right, Hanford, let's kind of put a bow on the kind of the whole game here, which part of the loss do you think was the most fixable?
- 24:22[SPEAKER_04]: I don't want to say quickly because I don't think you can quick anything that we saw there.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_04]: Fix, quick it, fixely, but you know what I mean, and then kind of...
- 24:28[SPEAKER_04]: What is the biggest thing that concerns you about?
- 24:30[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe you can't fix this season.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think you could fix it because again, we have a long season.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_01]: This was the first game and I guarantee you this.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: All those guys are going to go back in there and if it was me,
- 24:44[SPEAKER_01]: When we lost the game, I mean, everybody, we're gonna get in there early.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna get into the film.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I couldn't wait to get in there and see what I could do to improve.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I guarantee you all those guys are gonna get in there and they're gonna watch the film and they're gonna, can't wait to get a game plan for this coming week.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_01]: And they wanna, because they were in Paris, let's just face it.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: This team was in Paris, and they don't want that.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_01]: I expect a much better showing when we come out this week, Sunday.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_04]: All right, Hanford, last Brown's one, because you know we got to get a true Ohio state thoughts.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, hey, I was up to you, Hanford.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_04]: If you were the general manager of the Cleveland Browns, the head coach, the owner, you had the ultimate say, who were you starting at quarterback next week for the Cleveland Browns and why?
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: Next week, I'm going to, I'm going to stick with the Sean.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to keep him as the starting quarterback.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to give him, I think he deserved another start, and I'm going to keep him as a starter.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_05]: So deserves another start.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_05]: Yes.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_05]: What what did he do to deserve said to start make money.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: He completed some passes.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_01]: He threw the touchdown pass.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: He he uses legs and got some first down.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: He did some things well.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: And that was a little rust, but I think I'm gonna give him another game in order to shake that off.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_05]: Hopefully, he'll knock that rough stuff one day.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_05]: You never know or run it on a time or play that much Cleveland.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_05]: Regardless, Hanford, we're talking about gay.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_05]: Let's talk about it.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_05]: So it says up there, two-time all-pro, creator of the dog pound, three-time pro baller.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_05]: Above all, although Hanford Dixon, you are an ACC fan.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_05]: uh... take me through the emotions for you so this is why you drove on a breakfast morning right you know a high-state taxes the book guys uh... take a big lead early in the first half a couple of drops interceptions and went wrong for taxes second half things flipped the kicking game again and issue for a high-state how about those long-horns taxes or a half of the effort hey big dog let me let me just say this a high-year state gonna walk into uh...
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: go to Texas, you know, they got their chess all stuck out.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: We're big Ohio State.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: We owned the SEC.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to beat up on him.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: Boy, let me tell you something.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: Manning said, hell, no, there's no way.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: I can let you let you beat me again.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: And it was, I tell you whatever.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_01]: two, two teams.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, just big boys playing against each other.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I give, I give all the Ohio State fans a lot of bullshit, but Ohio State, I'm gonna tell you, Ohio State's got a good team.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_05]: Jeremiah Smith is ridiculous.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_05]: That's breaking any news to me.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_01]: anyone around that kid is incredible he really is and I'm telling you and they got a good coach a lot of people don't like a day is a good coach I mean he really is like my son won't talk to me right now but because he's huge Ohio State fan he will he will talk to me because I just take that dagger and I not only do how many voicemails do you need oh no I stick it but I turn it turn it when I get it inside of him but it was a great great game but the SEC just
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: that they still rule in college in college football.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: But I could say this.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_05]: And bam, oh, good, too.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: Good.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: Don't know.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_01]: No, roll tight.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: Don't even talk about that.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_01]: But I'll say this about Ohio State.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: When the rankings came out, I think they have Ohio State right now at number six.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_01]: Now, sure, they should move Ohio State from number one.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: But they ain't no way in hell.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to tell me that there's four or five other teams that is better than Ohio State.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: Ohio State's got a hell of a football team.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they moved them a little down a little bit too low because they're good football team.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_01]: They really are.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I just like to rub it in and know a little bit with everybody.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, Ohio State, but trust me, I have the respect for the bug guys.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_05]: I got to show you a picture I took during the break.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_05]: We got out of here.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hanford, thank you so much for hopping on coming up.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: And next week is coming.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: So that bark is going to be a big stroke again.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_01]: There we go.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_05]: We're going to need that bark up coming up on the Big Play Cleveland Show.

- 30:29[SPEAKER_05]: You put it in the chat and somebody watching big play Cleveland is winning those tickets to head on and see the guardos play.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_05]: This Friday and we're gonna know a whole lot more about how this season is going.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_05]: Come that time joining us now, Jensen Lewis bringing the heat as always.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_05]: Jensen, we're a half game out.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_05]: It's September, football's on.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_05]: How awesome is it to be alive right now?
- 30:48[SPEAKER_03]: it is great buddy great to be with you again and this is what you play for right sprint to the finish and it this says as big of a series if not the series of the year with the division on the line with playoff positioning on the line and it feels the way that it's just lined up with the pitching problems here that
- 31:07[SPEAKER_03]: it's a little bit of October in September.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_03]: So all kinds of implications for people that are just kind of getting up the speed on it.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_03]: One win for the White Sox in the next three games and they clinched that all important season series tie rakers.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_03]: So not only getting game one will be huge for the Guardians with Gavin Williams on the Hill tonight, but man, if you start to dream a little
- 31:31[SPEAKER_03]: not only do you get that season series tie breaker, but now you leapfrog it and position yourself not only as the opportunity to defeat or to defend your division championship, but guys maybe just maybe a pathway into a buy into the division series, wild to say that out loud, knowing what's happened in the roller coaster ride that has transpired so far this year.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_05]: Jensen, you talked about it feeling a little bit like October and September.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_05]: I wanted to go a little bit deeper into that because the guards decided to push back Gavin Williams, so he's starting this first game against Chicago.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_05]: That's kind of an indicator of, hey, this series means a little bit more than your average throughout the 162.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_05]: How much in-game do you expect Steven votes to manage like it's the playoffs?
- 32:14[SPEAKER_03]: I think from pitch number one, you have to know what is riding on it and they do.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_03]: I think for fans that are coming to the ballpark tonight in the next three days, you're going to see it manage like a postseason game and knowing that you have the off day on Thursday, the off day on Monday, you
- 32:34[SPEAKER_03]: you can afford to play it that way, Jack.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's the most important thing here is the off.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_03]: They's actually give you an added boost to be able to extend some of the relief core if you need to.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_03]: You hope that it's just vintage Gavin Williams here for what he's done, you know, the last two starts out.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_03]: He went 24 strikeouts and 13 innings with only four walks.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_03]: He's only given up the three runs total.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_03]: So that's the hope is that you get off to a great start with great starting pitching from Gavin tonight.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_03]: You get an early lead and you turn it over to this bonded bullpen.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_04]: Well, just let's talk about that.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_04]: What is one of those first decisions that you could look at?
- 33:08[SPEAKER_04]: And we kind of signal to you that, oh, okay, Steven vote really is kind of treating this like, this is do or die right now and well, kind of is.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_03]: I think just on the pitching side, you know, Ryan, you look at it, maybe extending Kate Smith, if there's a point tonight where, you know, you've got a one run lead and you ask Kate Smith, maybe to get a four or five out save, you know, you don't worry about what's going to happen tomorrow in Wednesday.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_03]: You just control and almost play it, not necessarily game seven-ish.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_03]: But you want to try and prevent the white socks from having a chance to win a game in this series just knowing that one win for them gives them that season series tiebreaker.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_03]: So I think you get that sense of urgency that it's it's not season on the line.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_03]: But there is so much on the line, if you're able to win tonight, if you're able to kind of put that continued pressure back on Chicago to return serve, like the sweep is the goal.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_03]: Because then that accomplishes so many big things that allow you a little breathing room down the stretch.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_03]: But you have to get game one.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_03]: So Ryan, I think you look at bullpen usage, maybe being guys being a little bit ready earlier than anticipated, you know, getting an extension of hunter gattest,
- 34:25[SPEAKER_03]: uh... in Craig yellow or are situationally ready in the fifth inning as opposed to maybe the six or seven so uh... i'm kind of excited and and you get the engines rev in here with uh... playing the chess match in the decision making between steven voter will battle
- 34:39[SPEAKER_05]: Jensen, I like to pro clay, self-proclaimed that I'm the king of the reverse jinx.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_05]: I feel like it was probably about two weeks ago, exactly when I set up here and told you that I was worried beyond all belief about first overall pick Travis Pazana in those 15 games since Jensen, if you'll hear me slashing 326-431-587-3 homers, 15 RBIs, 7 walks to 9 strikeouts, what has this kid done to turn around his September?
- 35:04[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's part of the season, Jack, and I think the great part about Travis is you never question the motor, you never question the work ethic, for young players, it's so easy when you hit adversity to have it really snowball on you.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_03]: And I think a calling card for him has been you're just trying to stay as even keel and continue to work through it.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, you mentioned, I mean, the last eight games, 12 for 26 guys, 462 batting average, including the three homers.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_03]: The 12 runs batted in is what I circle more importantly, and the power is great, Jack.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_03]: But this offense, knowing for the bulk of the year has not had consistent run scores, or at least guys that have been really good with runners and scoring positions.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_03]: So when he's got a chance, it feels like the last seven or eight games, Bizana has been really, really equal to the task.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_04]: Jensen it kind of seems like in a we went into this year kind of knowing it was going to be the year the prospects, but I'm not sure anybody could have predicted maybe to this extent But we just talked about Travis Pazona and there's plenty of other young guys that we can look at that have contributed to this point Which one of those young guys do you think elevates Cleveland ceiling the most down this stretch run and will hopefully into the playoffs?
- 36:18[SPEAKER_03]: You know, Ryan the easy answer of course is a healthy chased a lot.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_03]: I'm the underlying that in Sharpie, a healthy chased a loter is such a game changer because you need you need three dudes in the middle of a lineup if you're going to have any chance in the postseason.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_03]: We obviously know about Jose.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_03]: I think the addition of Joe Adele and what he's done guys that that has been maybe one of the single biggest additions.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_03]: at the deadline.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe even you go back to Jay Bruce when this team had the historic 22 game win streak and it was a veteran presence in Jay Bruce that that really brought the extra edge the experience in big games.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_03]: Joe Adele has not played in a lot of big games.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_03]: throughout his career and that's not his fault is just the angels have not been competitive.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_03]: But man, it down the stretch, this feels like a consequential move that has been view and far between for this front office.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_03]: So hats it to them.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_03]: You needed some right-handed power.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_03]: You needed a guy who could change a game with one swing.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_03]: For right now guys, Joe Hiddell has answered the questions that were really present for this offense when you headed into the
- 37:28[SPEAKER_05]: Jensen, I wanted to keep talking about Joey Del just because I wanted to ask you about a lefty picture.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_05]: We got Sean Newcomb on the mountain site, probably more of an opener obviously for the white socks, but when I just think of games that we lose in my lifetime as a Cleveland baseball fan, it tends to be against the crafty lefty.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_05]: Like, that's just always seems to factor in somehow outside of Joe Adele, because I mean, hey, if you look around the American League and these teams, we could be playing.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_05]: I've done some of those really kind of forget.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_05]: But there are so many good lefty pitchers that are going to be in the American League playoff.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_05]: So if you get in, you're going to meet like it's not like you can kind of just punt every time you face the lefty.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_05]: Who besides Joe Adele do you need to step up against left handed pitching?
- 38:03[SPEAKER_05]: Well, Joe has stepped up rather I should say.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, you know, Bazana is going to have to, he's going to have to be good against lefties.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_03]: Nathaniel Lowe, like, when you think about a postseason line up guys, you know, on Hill Martinez, it gives you, you know, the easy out because it's switch hitter.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_03]: So you don't worry about the lefty or righty there.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_03]: It's just a matter of where do you play him and when do you play him?
- 38:26[SPEAKER_03]: I think that the essential part,
- 38:29[SPEAKER_03]: is continuing to move the line.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, whether that is, you know, putting Bazana in between Adele and Nathaniel Lo, so that you don't kind of get bogged down on the base pass.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_03]: You know, on Hell, a canal has been a revelation as a switch hitter.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_03]: I know he struggled here the last week or so, but you expect that that young hitters are going to end up having those little
- 38:53[SPEAKER_03]: hiccups and hurdles they're going to have to get over.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_03]: I don't even talk about postseason stuff yet guys.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_03]: I want to focus on execution in this series because we're going to learn a lot about not only the guardians, we're going to learn a lot about the white socks too.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_03]: Remember, this is a pretty young team as far as
- 39:11[SPEAKER_03]: the experience of postseason games or heightened atmospheres, which they're facing now starting tonight.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_03]: It's different, man.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_03]: When you go on the road and you know that you haven't played your best baseball and the team your plan is pretty hot.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_03]: it gets intimidating and and I'll just draw on my experience in 2007, you know, we ran down the tigers and we put him to bed in September and and route to win in the division.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_03]: You know, there's a certain sense and I think parcromasic nailed it.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe a month or so goes like, when we get going,
- 39:45[SPEAKER_03]: We're we're really hard to beat and all they're drawn on we just saw a year ago, right guys I mean and even larger deficit at 15 and a half games that they had to overcome this is nothing Here to them at this point.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_03]: So I think what you need is you have two ways in right you could run down the white socks here win the division
- 40:05[SPEAKER_03]: you still occupy the final wildcard spot entering play today.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_03]: Now, you don't have the time raker against the blue jays, which you don't want to look over your shoulder, but you control what you can control.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_03]: You keep your eyes through the front of the wind shield, and I think this team enters this series with a lot of confidence.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_04]: Jensen when does urgency become overmanaging for Steven vote because for a lot of fans they certainly criticize a lot of them that Steven votes but makes and I got to imagine that this series in particular there's going to be even larger of a magnifying glass and all those decisions.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_03]: Ryan great question and the game can speed up on you pretty quickly and and I think what what I would look for and and I'm just thinking that the pitching side of me when I'm looking at where the white socks line up is entering this series.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_03]: pretty much the entirety of their middle of the lineup is struggling mightily.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_03]: So what you don't want to do is, you know, end up issuing some free passes go to your bullpen to early and, you know, then, then you kind of hang yourself out to drive for the rest of the series.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_03]: in my heart of hearts, guys, I can't envision Gavin Williams not giving you at least six innings with close to double the jade punch.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_03]: Like that feels like the floor for tonight, just knowing how much this white socks offense has struggled coming in.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_03]: You still circle a Miguel Vargas.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_03]: I know Murkami is going to get some headlines.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_03]: Miguel Vargas to me is the guy that can't beat you in this series.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_03]: I think there's plenty of swing and miss with Murkami.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_03]: I think they'll find ways to be able to to kind of maneuver around him if so.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_03]: But Miguel Vargas, if I go into that hitters meeting or that pitching meeting and we're going through the lineup, that's the guy that can't beat me in this series.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_04]: Last one for me, Jensen kind of sticking on that theme with Steven Vote.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_04]: I mentioned it seems like a lot of people criticize a lot of the things he does and this question about to ask on the surface level kind of seems a little silly considering he's a two-time male manager of the year.
- 42:00[SPEAKER_04]: But in your opinion, should Guardians fans trust Steven Vote to make the right decisions in this Chicago White Sox series.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you have to.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_03]: There's no one else, there's no like, and this is it.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_03]: This is how you cut your teeth, man.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_03]: And this is why you could pay the big bucks is to make those, you know, those in real time decisions when, you know, crap could hit the fan.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_03]: And then also on the flip side of it, when things are going well, sometimes you let the eyes tell you more so than the iPad or the analytics or seeing a third time through, you know, this is where that that delicate balance,
- 42:35[SPEAKER_03]: being able to really be good about what you've done as a player, what you've experienced in the game from that side, and then also what you've learned throughout the body of work of the year.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_03]: This is going to be awesome, guys.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, this is the time that you come down to the park.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_03]: If we don't have any browns games, the worry about Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, if you're going to go to a series, you don't got a high school football to worry about no excuses for this ballpark, not to feel like red October early here with a couple of weeks to go in September.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_05]: I was I was quite the lead at the time, but if my memory serves me right and I just googled it to make sure I wasn't being a dummy when that O17 when I'm the run all the way to the LCS, like I've seen fall short and game seven.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, you have your great size more as your Victor Martinez is the guys that you expect to show up the way that we might a chase the water right now, you know.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_05]: Johnny Perlton, not that he wasn't a good player, and he became a great player, obviously, steps up in the playoffs that your hits like what?
- 43:33[SPEAKER_05]: Looking at like a 330 couple bombs too, and that's a guy who helps carry you all the way that far.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_05]: Who is your pick?
- 43:39[SPEAKER_05]: The sneaky guy that if the guards get in, who yeah, maybe he's already got some good games under his belt, but maybe the nation meets him.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_03]: Boy, you would you would think to the top of the line up guys that that if they're going to go anywhere Stephen Clawn has to be the igniter and and boy he is trending in the right direction here headed into these final couple of weeks.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_03]: I think what hitting 400 with five extra base hits during his seven game hit streak exactly what you're looking for.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_03]: I think he's got a major league best 355 average.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_03]: since the start of July, that's that's a minimum of 150 plate appearances.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_03]: So you need your stars to be stars.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_03]: If this team's going to go anywhere, we know it's got Jose's got to get going.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_03]: It may not be the power because the hand made injury and still recovering and rehabbing that, but the supporting cast.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_03]: it's got to be all nine and and I don't think there's one single guy that you know you you hope for more than the other if they get the top three to four guys if you get quant the lotter Ramirez and Adele all going at the same time with the way that this pitching staff is let's not forget boys we say the best for last this bullpen a 2014 ERA what over the last eight to ten days best mark in the big leagues at that point
- 44:55[SPEAKER_04]: uh... you get them a lead it's a six-in-ing game hand it off watch these guys go out and generate some free air conditioning cannot wait to see how it all plays out jensen last one promise your jack-a-ball trades for those that don't know every time you come on the show we ask you something outside of baseball at least once i'm not gonna ask you about the shonwatsin because we're about to see real talk about a high-o-state jensen your thoughts on the epic collapse that was the fourth quarter for the buck guys and should Ryan day be under fire
- 45:21[SPEAKER_03]: You know, guys, the beauty is that you do have to play four quarters.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_03]: And for three, Ohio State kick Texas is ass.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_03]: And there's no getting around that.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_03]: There is question marks about some decision-making.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_03]: Remember, if you make the field goal with four to five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, we're not even talking about it.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, because it's a two possession game.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_03]: If you let them score the touchdown, all you need's the field goal to win the game.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_03]: So that is what it is.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_03]: What I would do is harking back to what did you do really well for the first half and even through that third quarter.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_03]: They've got to they got to help a schedule in front of him Ryan and I think in his heart of hearts.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_03]: Ryan days actually okay with with the loss in in a way that it will motivate this group.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_03]: And now they know they don't really have much more margin for air.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes that's a good thing in early loss like that on the road.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_03]: It's a character builder they're going to go through a real tough stretch here.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_03]: In the big 10 tricky spot and I was city there against Iowa.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_03]: We know that that place is kind of given them some issues in the past and then of course you get the gauntlet right you got to go to Bloomington.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_03]: You got to go to USC you got to play Oregon.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_03]: I think you take it a week at a time, but Ryan, I'll tell you I agree.
- 46:31[SPEAKER_03]: I agree with him for Dixon.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_03]: How to help you send that number one team down to a six spot.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_03]: There's no way you can make an argument that there are four or five teams that are better.
- 46:41[SPEAKER_03]: Now, Texas head to head.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, right now they beat them on the field.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_03]: But hey, I'll tell you what.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_03]: We'll have this conversation again a couple of months time and they could be singing a different.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_05]: Johnson, last last last question.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_05]: Uh, as an other name for.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_05]: Sorry, as an other name football fan.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_05]: How far off are they of Ohio State?
- 46:58[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm interested to see the middle of the year, Jack.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_03]: I actually put Notre Dame in a crossport parlay for Notre Dame to win the College Football National Championship and parlayed him with the Boston Red Sox to win the World Series.
- 47:12[SPEAKER_03]: And only because if you have kind of that shamrock, luck in the Irish, you know, part there together, I'm hoping it's just a monetization opportunity on the baseball side where it's Guardians.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_03]: It's red socks for the ALCS and we can figure out how to win money all the way around from that.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_03]: I think they're for real.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_03]: I'll be honest.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_03]: I'm interested to see what CJ Card does throughout the middle of this schedule when they finally get challenged and they will jack.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_03]: You had the ability to rely on that.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_03]: that two-headed monster the running game last year with love and a jadari and price.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_03]: So what can they do once they get hit the mouth?
- 47:48[SPEAKER_03]: Every team goes through it, but I would imagine we see the Irish deep into the college football posts.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_05]: I just pray they don't lose by 30 on national television for the 19th time in my life.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_05]: But with that, Jensen, thank you so much for joining us coming up Tyler Danbury from The Ohio State Sports Center.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_05]: We'll be talking more, bucks, and long horns.
- 48:05[SPEAKER_05]: But we got to tell you that this episode is brought to you by the third estimate.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_05]: Cleveland's five-star roofing and gutter pros.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_05]: Their Labor Day sale has been extended to the end of the month, where all new roofs come with a gutter system completely free.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_05]: Again, completely free.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_05]: All of their estimates are good for six months, so visit the thirdestimate.com again, that's the thirdestimate.com before the end of the month to take advantage of this offer.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_05]: Welcome back to the Big Play Cleveland Show, Jack O'Rourke alongside Ryan Tyler, fired up to bring our guy Tyler Damberg on and to talk some bucks and longhorns, Tyler, before we get into the game itself because there's a lot to be had there, obviously.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_05]: How was just the experience heading down to us?
- 48:42[SPEAKER_05]: Except that's got to be unreal.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_05]: And at the end of the day, one of the best college football games you'll ever see.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_02]: it was an incredible atmosphere.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks for having me on guys.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it was it was really cool.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you know, one of the one of our duties is going out to midfield for the coin toss and, you know, being a sideline reporter and and so walking out to midfield and looking around and seeing a sea of burnt orange and a lot of scarlet by the way, the Ohio State alumni base and fan base traveled incredibly well.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_02]: But looking around, we were right behind the showband of the Southwest,
- 49:17[SPEAKER_02]: I remember looking over and and will Matthews whose Texas side line reporter on the radio former NFL full back he was a great long horn and just looking at him and and seeing a guy that's been around and in some great atmosphere's environments and we're in a sea of like burnt or smoke there's a big like smoke bomb that went off for some pyro attack next and
- 49:39[SPEAKER_02]: And just looking over to him and he says, you know, it's something along the line.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_02]: I can't remember, but it was it was something like a wow, like enjoy this, you know, it was just a really, really cool atmosphere and environment and the book has traveled really well, the Austin fans and Texas, you know, they showed out really well.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_02]: And when you look at it from the national scope, like.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_02]: we need to play games like this.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_02]: We need to play games like this in September.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_02]: This is what college football is all about.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's so special.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_02]: You know, for as much that goes on in the world of college football off the field.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_02]: Once that ball is kicked, there's just nothing like it.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_02]: There's another Mike is non-conference games of blue bloods and power brands and two, you know, keep powers in the history of college football.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_02]: It was a special night, Tyler.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_05]: Now we got to talk about the other part of the night sadly.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_05]: I did want to have some good advice, get some get some pvo out there first.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_05]: When we're entering the fourth quarter down it, they're in K-Royle, that's the name, right?
- 50:36[SPEAKER_05]: Darryl K-Rail.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_05]: No, I was close enough.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_05]: Darryl, Darryl, not Darryl.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_05]: It was 23 to 30 high-o-state lad entering the fourth quarter, and it just seems like everything that could, from an outside everything that could have went wrong, pretty much did go wrong for Ohio City in that fourth quarter, kicking again seems to rear its ugly head at the wrong moment.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_05]: Just, can we honestly, let's start before the fourth quarter.
- 50:58[SPEAKER_05]: Well, what's so well in the first three quarters that you're like, okay, like this, this team's gonna be a, okay, just an anomaly fourth.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_02]: Well, they were explosion and they went to the air.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the the past to run ratio was incredibly high and in favor of the past, you know, they ran the ball a little bit po Jackson, especially early on established himself was some really strong runs, but.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there's no doubt that the connection between Julian Sand and Jeremiah Smith was so evident in that first half.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_02]: And they also forced those two turnovers, which definitely got a little bit of luck on that interception from Jalen McLean where Cam Coleman beat him, but dropped it and it fell right into the lap.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_02]: of Jalen who was able to come down with the interception, which was big.
- 51:40[SPEAKER_02]: And then how about that force fumble on the first play of the ball game?
- 51:43[SPEAKER_02]: J. Timon scooping up the football in his first college road game, first college starting comes down with a fumble recovery in the red zone.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, they have to settle for a field goal.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, that's not a bad way to stake your claim to get things started.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_02]: But I think really where all that momentum swung into half time and I think what made the second half comeback so surprising was the fourth downstop that remain Matthew's junior head for Ohio State.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_02]: And that put about a minute, 20 minute, 30 left in the clock toe half time and the buck has marched halfway down the field and got the touchdown from sand to smith and it just seemed like Ohio State had all pedal to the metal and
- 52:24[SPEAKER_02]: had all the momentum going into half time.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_02]: And then Texas, it was kind of a slow gradual climb in that third quarter.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_02]: Neither team was really sticking much separation in that fourth quarter.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_02]: It was all Texas.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_04]: Tyler, I don't want to mix politics with sports, but they're calling Ryan Day conservative.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_04]: Do you agree?
- 52:41[SPEAKER_04]: How much blame do you put on that towards the epic collapse at the end?
- 52:45[SPEAKER_04]: And, well, do you think you was too conservative with his play calling?
- 52:49[SPEAKER_02]: That's a great question, Ryan.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think for Coach Day, I'm sure that's a fourth quarter.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_02]: He probably wants to have back.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think that, that...
- 53:00[SPEAKER_02]: There was a big difference in that first half, and really that fourth quarter.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_02]: I think that they didn't air it out as much and when they did, there were some inefficiencies.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_02]: They weren't able to capitalize, especially in the red zone.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that there were about five or six little plays at least that definitely decided the game.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think the one that really stands out is the past that Julian sand had to Devon McQ and streaking over the middle and McQ and was wide open and was probably going to walk in for a touchdown and and Julian over cooked the past, you know, McQ and I think was making that route around the 15 around the 10-yard line and the past sailed over his helmet after
- 53:40[SPEAKER_02]: he made that that post across the middle and was wide open.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think there were a couple plays where Ohio State force Texas to put the ball in the ground.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_02]: Pete pears with the puck as up 23 to three in the third quarter had a little peanut toeman punch ball popped down the ground and a little junior almost came down within and he wasn't able to make the play on on a
- 54:00[SPEAKER_02]: that he probably should have pounced on, but Earl little played a heck of a game and so you certainly can't blame him for that and I'm sure we'll get more into that.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_02]: The other one was was the Muff Punt that Yankee Jones almost came came down with, you know, Ohio State.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_02]: There's there's an arguable chance there that they should have
- 54:19[SPEAKER_02]: recovered that month punt.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_02]: Um, you know, I, and then, of course, that I think one key decision that could have decided the game, maybe it maybe it didn't decide the game or haven't affected it at all because Texas was inevitably going to score there on that drive to take the lead.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_02]: was do we let Texas score do we let the long horns into the end zone so we can put the ball back at our offences hands with about 90 to 100 seconds left or do we trust the defense and try and make them make a goal line stand and I think that really is is one is one play where we look at the end game management of coach day and and wonder how this game looks if they let
- 55:02[SPEAKER_02]: Texas into the end zone and try to have a chance with the game winning drive and and who knows if if there's any difference on the game if they if they make a different call.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_05]: Tyler, I'm lucky that I'm not in Ohio State fan because I get too emotional.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_05]: Like I would be probably leading the charge of the Lunatic Fringe every single year.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_05]: Like I just get two into my sports teams.
- 55:23[SPEAKER_05]: I'm two reactionary on a day-to-day basis.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_05]: So I would imagine that theoretically, if I was a member of the Lunatic Fringe, I'd be looking at Julian Sayon, second half, 5 to 16, 86 yards, no touchdowns in a pick.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_05]: And now it's I believe what three losses in the last four games for Ohio State with the only win in that stretch being the ball state Cardinals not that beating mac teams are easy.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_05]: I know that is a football fan that you never underrate mac teams this time of the year Tyler We do this ever some time you come on you need to call me down about a player and typically it ends up working I think we're still shooting at a pretty high clip on that Call me down on Julian Sam
- 55:57[SPEAKER_02]: Well, first off, you mentioned three out of the last four, the last time I think Ohio State did that was 2013 and into 14.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_02]: And obviously, 2014, 15, that was a pretty good result.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_02]: So that's one thing, and there's a lot of season left.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_02]: With truly insane, you know, there's definitely a lot of passes that he left on the table on that game.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_02]: There's no doubt about it.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_02]: Like that Devin McEwen throw that would have been a walk in touchdown and maybe that's the play that was the ballgame.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that was curtains from there on out after that touchdown to Devin McEwen.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_02]: I think there were a couple.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_02]: There were a couple.
- 56:38[SPEAKER_02]: There are a couple of routes, you know, you saw the Brock Boyd route where he was quite open, coming across the field.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think there were definitely a couple misses from Julian saying, and obviously you look at the connection with Jeremiah Smith.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that connection's, you know, that's A1 to A2 right there.
- 56:56[SPEAKER_02]: It says, it's as good as it gets.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_02]: from 10 to 4, what we saw in that first half.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they were really clicking, they were in sync, and that's something that you should be excited about moving forward.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_02]: But also, too, you know, you look at the other guys that were out there on the receiving core and they were held in check.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think the next most yards for N.O.H.F.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_02]: State Lides receiver was Brandon Innes's 33 yards.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_02]: I believe it was, but I,
- 57:25[SPEAKER_02]: But again, I think there were a couple of throws too that you can look back at Julien San and you should be really happy with.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think there were a couple of throws that Julien made in that game that he didn't make or wouldn't make last year.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_02]: I looked back to that throw that he had where he rolled out to the right and across his body.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_02]: He had all kinds of time first off credit to the offensive line for really straining him.
- 57:47[SPEAKER_02]: and getting him out of the pocket and having all that kind of time to throw.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_02]: And then he looks across the other side of the field and why it opens tight and Nate Roberts.
- 57:55[SPEAKER_02]: That's really insane extending the play, extending the pocket, and looking long down the field.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, maybe that wasn't his third or fourth
- 58:08[SPEAKER_02]: choice or read on that play.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe Robert's improvised that, but San went down the field and he was able to connect with him.
- 58:16[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that was a really, really cool almost kind of a jaw dropping play where he was just able to keep that play going.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I think those improvisational skills of San is something to be really excited about.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_02]: And the connection with Jeremiah Smith, that goes
- 58:38[SPEAKER_02]: if they're going to continue to be pushed by this game and have that drive them forward, you know, it's that it's that truly in Smith, Jeremiah Smith connection.
- 58:48[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to need those two to get to where they want to be.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, I, I, I, I
- 58:53[SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't, I wouldn't press the panic button at all on Julie and saying, obviously that second half is a cause for a bit of concern.
- 59:01[SPEAKER_02]: There's no doubt about it.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_02]: But you look at that first half that Julie and had in a really tough environment triple digit heat away crowd for the first time this year.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we should look back at that first half and be excited about Julie and saying now we got to see four quarters of that from him.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_04]: Tyler, I'm trying to figure out how to view this Ohio State loss.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_04]: Because on one hand, I view it as this can galvanize a team.
- 59:24[SPEAKER_04]: You go look a couple years ago when they won it with Will Howard.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_04]: You lose a heartbreaker to Oregon, then you end up facing them again in the playoffs and you breeze through them and route to a national championship.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_04]: So I'm like, okay, maybe that can happen for the squad.
- 59:35[SPEAKER_04]: But then I think about this, the way that the loss happened.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_04]: Like, imagine if they didn't fumble on that first drive, imagine if Wingo doesn't drop it, imagine if Cain Coleman doesn't have a huge drop.
- 59:45[SPEAKER_04]: Like, what does that game look like in totality?
- 59:48[SPEAKER_04]: If Texas was that good for all four quarters, instead of just that fourth quarter.
- 59:52[SPEAKER_04]: So I guess my question to you, Tyler, is the way you're viewing this loss, more so as something that can galvanize this team, or more so something that can really kind of crush the morality of this team.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to find out because I think the good thing about having this game at this point in the season is you've got at least four or five matchup games where you're going to be able to make up for this loss, especially when this happens week to the season on the road at the now number one team in front of
- 1:00:28[SPEAKER_02]: 100,000 plus like you know that this is this is why you played these games now and why team should play these games now is because it prepares you for the road ahead and talking to Carson Hinsman after the game and I give Carson truly insane safety gentlemen claim those three especially a lot of credit for talking to talking to us after the game doing an interview with them talking to the media after the game you know that's you know these guys again
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_02]: had had coach Ryan Day like you know it's it's a tough thing to do.
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_02]: I give them a lot of credit for doing that and ask and or put up with with the questions we ask.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm talking to Carson Hinsman after the game you know I I get the sense that this is something that can galvanize them, this can motivate them you know asking him about what's your message to the fans right now and and he said um
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_02]: If you're counting the buck guys out right now, you're wrong, and I hope that that's the messaging that they take with them moving forward because again, this is a game that you can really learn from, and this is a game that you can put forward into how to handle some.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_02]: some of these types of scenarios because you're going to be visiting I want a couple weeks then you're going to be visiting Indiana you're going to be hosting Oregon you're going to be on the road at USC you're going to welcome in Michigan I mean this is a this is a really really tough schedule after the Texas game but the best part is is that despite a one point loss at the now top ring team in the land you've got a lot of games to make up for this and get ready
- 1:02:09[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, Tyler one to ask you a little bit about that schedule because there is a absolutely ridiculous stretch of football that the bucks have coming up here in a little bit October 17th you had in the Blooming 10 to try and get some get back for the big 10 title game last year obviously to this point in time.
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_05]: Nobody besides Marcus Freeman has been able to beat Kurt Signetti so we got to see if someone can go out there and get it done for us, maybe the bucks will do it.
- 1:02:29[SPEAKER_05]: and then by week so by week is nice you get a little break after that game deservedly so then you're going all the way out to LA to take on U.S.C.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_05]: I believe jaded my avocado currently leads the country and touchdown passes which again through two weeks who cares but that could's pretty dang good.
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_05]: Then you loop back out and spend a bit of a rough start but you probably think Tyler that the fine folks in Eugene will figure something out by November 7th.
- 1:02:51[SPEAKER_05]: You know that this football team won't look as bad as they had against Boise and Oklahoma State the last couple of weeks.
- 1:02:57[SPEAKER_05]: Which of those three games in that stretch scares you the most for Ohio State?
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_02]: Well, visiting Indiana, this is going to be a visit to Indiana unlike any other, and not to get to ahead of ourselves, but Ohio State, when it visits Indiana, it's been historically like a home game for the buck guys, because it's so close, it's about a three and a half hour drive from Columbus, and you usually see a lot more Scarlet than Crimson.
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_02]: Lee, what is Lee Corso always talk about?
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_02]: He tells that story about, they would always take the team photo when Ohio State was in town,
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_02]: That's where there's a lot of fans in the stands and the red kind of that the who's your crimson.
- 1:03:38[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, you want to you want to have the picture that has the most fans in the background like let's make it look good.
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_02]: But this year it's going to be completely different.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_02]: There's going to be way more crimson.
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's a highly anticipated game.
- 1:03:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think that one's really interesting.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_02]: You know, also two, if Ohio State's pitted in a late game scenario, like we saw in Texas, how do they handle that now knowing what they do after that Texas game and knowing, you know, the approach that Coopsignetti takes to that.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_02]: How he handles in-game late game scenarios as well with his experience.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_02]: Iowa is a really, really tough environment.
- 1:04:20[SPEAKER_02]: I think Indiana is the game that
- 1:04:23[SPEAKER_02]: is really going to be intriguing to see how that match-up looks now compared to what it did in the Big Ten Championship with so much that's new and different.
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_02]: And then Oregon as well.
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you said it, Jack.
- 1:04:38[SPEAKER_02]: Like,
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_02]: This season can look completely different for Oregon, come November 7th, then it does on September 14th for better or for worse.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, who knew that we'd be talking about Oregon right now after dropping?
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_02]: a game against a local homestead team that lost a Tulsa time that was so crazy I had a when my buddies was over Saturday morning.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_05]: I'm like, oh, like they're going blow them out.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_05]: Messed the mocker had 50 attempts for 200 yards last week through like three pecks or something like that.
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_05]: Like, oh, it's piece of cake.
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_05]: No one's.
- 1:05:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's crazy.
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_02]: So again, it just goes to show you how nuts the college football landscape has already been through two weeks.
- 1:05:21[SPEAKER_02]: You know, 2007's kind of like the gold standard, right?
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_02]: In terms of crazy crazy college football seasons, but we've gotten a little bit of everything.
- 1:05:31[SPEAKER_02]: We've gotten high drinks, we've gotten clock mess apps, we've gotten
- 1:05:37[SPEAKER_02]: top two upsets.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_02]: We've got number one going down to number four.
- 1:05:42[SPEAKER_02]: You know, again, that's, that's goes to show you anything can happen right now.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_02]: So it might be too early to tell about out of, you know, the the remaining opponents that Ohio State has, who the the biggest matchup is going to be, but I do have, you know, that October 17th visit to Bloomington, a pencil then as a really, really intriguing visit.
- 1:06:04[SPEAKER_04]: Buckeyes come in number six in a week to a people Tyler to high to low.
- 1:06:11[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I think number six is too low.
- 1:06:14[SPEAKER_02]: Um, you know, what higher states the number one team right, they go down to the number 14.
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_02]: They lose a top five matchup on the road.
- 1:06:22[SPEAKER_02]: Triple digit key to the game where they led by 20 heading into the fourth quarter.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_02]: And yes, that's that it's a disappointing collapse.
- 1:06:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's a tough comeback.
- 1:06:31[SPEAKER_02]: I believe it's the largest
- 1:06:36[SPEAKER_02]: according to sport radar and the history of the AP top 25 pull it's it's a tough loss but again going down to number six I don't understand that after Ohio State seeks out the challenge to go down to Austin and to lose by one to the team that's now ranked number one I do think that number six is definitely definitely too low
- 1:07:01[SPEAKER_05]: That brings up a perfect game for us to play that in Tyler, seeing as there are only five teams ahead of Ohio State right now.
- 1:07:07[SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to list off those teams for you.
- 1:07:09[SPEAKER_05]: Who are how many of these teams should the Buckeye still be in front of after that loss last Saturday?
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_05]: Texas coming in the one spot, you got Georgia 2, the Irish at 3, the Hoosiers at 4, and the U at 5.
- 1:07:23[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think the only difference between those three teams between Texas and Ohio State is they really haven't plenty of anybody yet.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's kind of hard to judge.
- 1:07:36[SPEAKER_02]: So I do understand maybe where the poll voters are having Ohio State at number six.
- 1:07:43[SPEAKER_02]: And again, it's early so do the polls really matter probably not.
- 1:07:48[SPEAKER_02]: But I think that Ohio State should at least
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_02]: be maybe around three or four, you know, maybe they just go to four, since they were just beaten by number four, because they, you know, you can't go against them for playing the now number one team on the road and the return game of a home at home.
- 1:08:08[SPEAKER_02]: So again, it's all here, say, but I think maybe if they replaced Ohio State with Texas,
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, a little four for one, one to four swap vice versa.
- 1:08:20[SPEAKER_02]: I thought that could could have been an option.
- 1:08:23[SPEAKER_04]: All right, Tyler, the buck guys lost and I want to ask you this question.
- 1:08:27[SPEAKER_04]: Do you think the buck guys are still the best team in the country and their stuff that they can fix up from that game?
- 1:08:32[SPEAKER_04]: Or do you, well, did you see kind of a gap start to form between maybe Texas and Ohio State that you maybe not thought was there?
- 1:08:38[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think there's definitely things that they have to fix.
- 1:08:44[SPEAKER_02]: You look at the defensive line, still applying pressure, no doubt.
- 1:08:48[SPEAKER_02]: But just two sex to arch manning, he had over three and a half seconds on average to throw.
- 1:08:57[SPEAKER_02]: I think that, you know, you know, you look at the linebacker spot, maybe there's still still some things to sort out.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_02]: Peyton Pierce was the highest graded player on PFF.
- 1:09:07[SPEAKER_02]: He did have that forced fumble that ultimately text is recovered.
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_02]: Christian Allegro has got a lot of versatility, but also two.
- 1:09:16[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't go on notice that Riley Pettajon and T.J. offered continue to show that they definitely deserve playing time.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_02]: They deserve more snaps.
- 1:09:26[SPEAKER_02]: Riley Pettajon, that's another welcome to college football.
- 1:09:31[SPEAKER_02]: He's a Rive type of moment on- Great football name, too.
- 1:09:35[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, absolutely great football name.
- 1:09:38[SPEAKER_02]: You can tell that's a guy from McKinney, Texas, no doubt.
- 1:09:41[SPEAKER_05]: It's the same as it seems like James Laurenitis.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_05]: Like how bad could that guy be at football, that kind of a name?
- 1:09:46[SPEAKER_02]: And it's so funny too, you know, Lauren, I just had his breakout game at Texas in 2006, now coaching the linebackers and and Petta John, I think there were some moments where he definitely had his, he's arrived a moment.
- 1:09:59[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that I think that, you know, the person, maybe is something that Ohio State still trying to figure out is who are the best guys out there that we can put on the field and have out there to win games.
- 1:10:11[SPEAKER_02]: And again, you know, the, the secondary continued to look.
- 1:10:15[SPEAKER_02]: to look good or a little junior played a great game.
- 1:10:18[SPEAKER_02]: He worked his butt off.
- 1:10:19[SPEAKER_02]: Devon Sanchez worked his butt off had a great game.
- 1:10:22[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he had the passenger fairings that, you know, in my opinion, I don't think that's passenger fairings, but that definitely was one thing that helped Texas marched down the field.
- 1:10:33[SPEAKER_02]: Are you calm flagged there, Jack?
- 1:10:35[SPEAKER_05]: I'm not, I, I, I, I, I, I, I don't as you can see.
- 1:10:36[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that, that's a flag.
- 1:10:37[SPEAKER_05]: That's a flag.
- 1:10:39[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 1:10:39[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_02]: Understood?
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_05]: I, I, I, I come from the gene to gene stare to our school
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_02]: that's why you're an honorable man.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, I think that I think that Ryan to your question I think that Ohio State still has some things to figure out and maybe it's too early to say but this is this is definitely a team that's among the best in college football no doubt and it's great to see them go toe to toe with Texas and it's just tough
- 1:11:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's tough in the fashion that they lost the ball game and there's no doubt about it and it was it and it was a really really disappointing collapse Um, but I do think the book as at least from that first half they show that they can still be dangerous.
- 1:11:24[SPEAKER_02]: They just have to figure some things out.
- 1:11:26[SPEAKER_04]: What would a meaningful response against Kent State look like this week beyond a ungodly disgustingly lap side at score and tell your boys to take it easy on my boy Josh cribs, please
- 1:11:37[SPEAKER_02]: Well, first off, I'm excited to see Josh Cribs and his mentorship of Dorealist Clark, another great football name, because he's one of the best kick return men in all of college football.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_02]: So that's another great football name.
- 1:11:52[SPEAKER_02]: He's all fantastic.
- 1:11:54[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Dorealist is the best, but yeah, I think that, you know, to come out of this game,
- 1:12:03[SPEAKER_02]: and viewing it as a success.
- 1:12:06[SPEAKER_02]: I think Ohio State can has to continue to get these young guys into the game and get them meaningful snaps.
- 1:12:14[SPEAKER_02]: We need to learn more about these young guys.
- 1:12:17[SPEAKER_02]: Legend Bay played one snap.
- 1:12:19[SPEAKER_02]: In split back formation at Texas, you know, this is really going to be Ohio State's, you know, final non-conference game, final non-conference test against a G5 or G6 opponent, where, you know, they, they.
- 1:12:35[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, after this game, you know, you just don't know.
- 1:12:37[SPEAKER_02]: In Big Ten Play, you don't know if you're gonna have the chances to get guys in.
- 1:12:42[SPEAKER_02]: There are definitely matchups where you certainly could and certainly should, but you just never know with the unknowns of college football.
- 1:12:51[SPEAKER_02]: So in this game, you got to get something out of this and you got to learn more about these young guys.
- 1:12:56[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's a big thing.
- 1:12:59[SPEAKER_02]: You know, see a lot of rotation on defense and see what combinations
- 1:13:03[SPEAKER_02]: You feel are are going to be able to push you forward in a big 10 play.
- 1:13:08[SPEAKER_02]: I love what I saw from car wilder.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_02]: The freshman defense event.
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_02]: He was used mainly as a defense tackle when they have that freshman package, which is basically when they have all the edge wrestlers and past wrestlers.
- 1:13:19[SPEAKER_02]: on the defensive line.
- 1:13:21[SPEAKER_02]: He had two quarterback pressures and he played just five snaps, laying that fourth quarter.
- 1:13:25[SPEAKER_02]: There was one play where he just blew up Senator Connor Robertson.
- 1:13:29[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that we we need to see some of these young guns out there and see if these are the ones that can be pushing for playing time consistently, especially as we move into big 10 play.
- 1:13:39[SPEAKER_02]: So I think if we see if we see those guys, if we see a lot more of that and we see who can
- 1:13:46[SPEAKER_02]: or who can keep some spots out there.
- 1:13:48[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's going to be where we find some successes beyond the score in this Kent State game.
- 1:13:52[SPEAKER_05]: Tyler, last question for you as we wrap up here on the Big Play Cleveland show.
- 1:13:55[SPEAKER_05]: What a great Monday, it's been, despite what the Brownies did for us.
- 1:13:59[SPEAKER_05]: Yesterday, in the NFL, during those four o'clock games, anyone who saw sunny styles could tell it.
- 1:14:04[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, guys would be a dog, all right, in the NFL after about two snaps or something like that.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_05]: Who's going to be the next defensive star in the NFL from Ohio State?
- 1:14:14[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we saw two NFC East buck iron rookies make some big plays, sunny styles just I mean how about that how about that bull rush where he just bull those same thing that was nice sack of jail and hurts that was disgusting.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, then Caleb downs on that safety blitz rocking Jackson Dart and of course in, you know, the the buck guys forced what they forced to fumble was that Texas recovered this weekend and then the former buck guy has a strip sack of a giant's quarterback.
- 1:14:50[SPEAKER_02]: and it's caught by the offensive lineman and return for no game that's kind of indicative of the way the weekend kind of went.
- 1:14:58[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, I think Caleb Downs Caleb Downs, Sunny Styles, and our Ville Reese had a couple of some big plays.
- 1:15:04[SPEAKER_02]: But I think that that Caleb
- 1:15:06[SPEAKER_02]: that that is the guy that you can that you can build defenses around and sunny styles there's no one better than you want in that spot as a linebacker um to have then then the big number 52 out there so uh really really cool to see the buck guys dominate and and showcase some of their stuff in some national prime time spots this weekend.
- 1:15:28[SPEAKER_04]: Tyler, I want to ask you this is my last one.
- 1:15:30[SPEAKER_04]: This is beyond the game.
- 1:15:30[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I lied, sorry, Tyler.
- 1:15:32[SPEAKER_04]: Beyond the game.
- 1:15:32[SPEAKER_04]: No, I was.
- 1:15:33[SPEAKER_04]: Listen, you are, as your thing says right here, your sideline reporter for the Ohio State Support Network, not only that you were at Texas, so I think you have a very unique perspective on this.
- 1:15:40[SPEAKER_04]: You don't have to comment if you don't want to.
- 1:15:42[SPEAKER_04]: Just the whole Steve Starkesean thing with Laura Rutledge, and who was excuse me, and I was.
- 1:15:49[SPEAKER_02]: Holly, really.
- 1:15:49[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, thank you so much.
- 1:15:52[SPEAKER_02]: Well, first of all, I didn't get to meet Laura Rutledge, but Holly Rowe was working the Ohio State sideline.
- 1:15:58[SPEAKER_02]: And so one of the coolest parts of the job is getting to work with and alongside and meet all the national TV sideline reporters.
- 1:16:09[SPEAKER_02]: And I got to tell you, they're all fantastic.
- 1:16:11[SPEAKER_02]: They have all been absolutely incredible.
- 1:16:15[SPEAKER_02]: And so Holly Rowe, it was like,
- 1:16:19[SPEAKER_02]: meeting her and she was super helpful and, you know, it's kind of, you know, look out for each other, help each other type of thing.
- 1:16:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's, that's what sports meetings all about.
- 1:16:30[SPEAKER_02]: So Holly could not have been nicer.
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_02]: She was fantastic to work with and just get to talk to.
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_02]: And so, yeah, I think at halftime, at least from what Laura Rutledge was reporting, there were some technical difficulties, and Sarketian did wait, you know, so I think that, I think that's kind of what led to him not being able to do that halftime interview, but post game, you know, eight.
- 1:16:57[SPEAKER_02]: you feel for Holly in those moments because you know she if you listen to any of her post game interviews I mean she brings out a lot in whether that's a player or coach which he interviews them you know this is a signature moment in sarketians career um this is this is arguably his biggest regular season went no doubt about it and
- 1:17:18[SPEAKER_02]: You know for that to happen to Holly for that to happen for the broadcast and for that to become a viral moment You know, it's just it's just hard to watch that and it's it's hard to see that and you know I think that's it that's a really hard moment to handle as a as a sideline report I'm trying to think of it you know like how how it handled that moment and it's it's one that you just can't really account for and it's it's just
- 1:17:44[SPEAKER_02]: one thing that you try to think about how, how would I handle that or, you know, just something along the lines of that.
- 1:17:50[SPEAKER_02]: So I, I just thought that was, I thought I, I don't really agree with with Coach Sark, not making time for that and, you know, bolting off.
- 1:18:00[SPEAKER_02]: I do understand maybe him wanting to enjoy the moment, taking in the emotion of the moment, but there's a lot of time to do that.
- 1:18:07[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, I just think if that weren't happening to me, I'd be pretty upset about that.
- 1:18:12[SPEAKER_02]: But ultimately, you know, understand, this is a big moment.
- 1:18:15[SPEAKER_02]: Big when you're handling a lot of emotion and enjoy right now and a lot of overload at midfield on that sideline, but yeah, it was just a
- 1:18:27[SPEAKER_02]: It was definitely something that keeps people talking about it this week.
- 1:18:31[SPEAKER_02]: Tyler.
- 1:18:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, sorry, Jack.
- 1:18:34[SPEAKER_05]: I'm just going to say, like in my online dynasty, I dropped, or I dropped one to, yeah, FCS last week, one and didn't do media after the game caught a two game suspension for that.
- 1:18:43[SPEAKER_05]: So they're there's a president out there.
- 1:18:44[SPEAKER_05]: It's all going to say, there's a president out there if you don't talk to the media.
