- 0:00Welcome to IOU, some money education.
- 0:03Today we have Hannah Kumaka, back on the microphone.
- 0:07She is asking all the questions you wish you could,
- 0:09but she's also bringing some amazing answers.
- 0:12She is the queen of budgeting, of sight hustles,
- 0:14and we're gonna be digging into all of that today.
- 0:16And on today's episode, we're gonna be talking about
- 0:18how budgeting can only really get you so far.
- 0:21You kind of need to get to a point
- 0:23when you're asking to earn a little bit more money,
- 0:25and that's where sight hustles come in.
- 0:26And we're gonna be talking about some
- 0:28of my favorite sight hustles, including extras work,
- 0:30supermarkets outlink, mystery shoppers,
- 0:33dog walking pets sitting, all of those
- 0:36in today's episode towards one that you do not want to miss.
- 0:38And if you're listening to this episode
- 0:40and you're thinking, okay, this is really great.
- 0:42I want to actually action this.
- 0:44I want to create my own budget.
- 0:45I want to start working towards a short term,
- 0:48long term savings goals.

- 1:30Hannah, thank you so much for coming back on the podcast.
- 1:34This is really exciting,
- 1:35because I think I love the way that you make
- 1:37talking up, budging and money and everything,
- 1:39just like easy and fun.
- 1:41Yeah, I mean, I wish when I was your age,
- 1:43I'd had an account like that to follow.
- 1:45I think that you kind of in sort of five, 10 years,
- 1:49I think all of us, anyone in this space,
- 1:50will look back at the work we were doing
- 1:52and be like, wow, this was really helpful.
- 1:54It's so fun, though.
- 1:56Like, I love it.
- 1:57I love talking about money, I love budgeting,
- 2:00I love helping people,
- 2:01yeah, think about how they can best
- 2:03organize their accounts to suit them.
- 2:05And I don't know, yeah, I've seen the stuff
- 2:07that you guys post as well, I'm like, yes.
- 2:08Like, I feel like everyone, we're getting it now.
- 2:11Everyone's good.
- 2:12I know.
- 2:12I think what was really great about what you shared
- 2:14in the last episode for anyone
- 2:16that hasn't listened, definitely go back.
- 2:17You don't have to have listened to that for this one
- 2:19to make sense.
- 2:21But I think what Hannah really demonstrated
- 2:23in the way she spoke about how she splits her accounts.
- 2:25Obviously, we've got IOU, the practical,
- 2:27which is the way that us at the curve split our accounts,
- 2:31the way that you were teaching
- 2:32and talking about it is a really slight iteration
- 2:35of that's kind of basically the same thing.
- 2:37But I think it's also just a reminder,
- 2:40you know, you'll find things that work for you
- 2:43and that don't, and there'll be tips and tricks
- 2:45along the way.
- 2:46And I recently had a total meltdown falling off the bandwidth,
- 2:50even on us, even this morning, trying to get here.
- 2:53But I think to Hannah off, Mark,
- 2:54I had like a little meltdown at the transition
- 2:56because the trains weren't working.
- 2:57And I didn't have the right money in my account
- 2:59and it kept being like contact issuer, contact analysis.
- 3:01Oh, you know, when sometimes it just rains at pause.
- 3:05And I've spent all this time trying to sort my finances out
- 3:09and then it doesn't work.
- 3:10I find it deeply frustrating.
- 3:13But it's kind of the reality is that sometimes you do have
- 3:17to revisit what hasn't worked.
- 3:19And in our last conversation, some of the homework
- 3:22that we gave people listening was the idea
- 3:23of like checking your accounts often.
- 3:25Oh, so good.
- 3:26And then also, I didn't realize until recently,
- 3:28all my followers were telling me,
- 3:30is that a lot of these bank accounts actually
- 3:32have like a quick view.
- 3:33And so I've just moved to BenZ a few weeks ago.
- 3:36And when you open up the BenZ app,
- 3:39it literally has a quick view of your top four accounts.
- 3:42So like, I don't know this.
- 3:44I literally no idea that you could just open up your account
- 3:46without even logging in and seeing all of your accounts
- 3:48in case someone's like peering over your shoulder.
- 3:50And you simply look a quick view of your accounts.
- 3:52It's like, that's such a good way to make it a little bit easier
- 3:56to look at your accounts without looking at all of them.
- 3:59So it's like, okay, cool, I can select a few.
- 4:00It's so good.
- 4:01I agree.
- 4:02And I think that was something I didn't do recently
- 4:04and it really caught up with me.
- 4:06What I'd love to speak to you about
- 4:08in this conversation, Hannah, is there's probably
- 4:10a lot of people that have done this for the first time
- 4:13or perhaps read on their budgets.
- 4:15They might be really gutted with what they found
- 4:18in terms of if they are following roughly a 50, 30,
- 4:2120 split, 50 on essentials, 30 on fund staff
- 4:24and 20 on investing in future,
- 4:26that actually there's like almost nothing
- 4:29really left over for investing, you know,
- 4:31which as we all know is really, really important
- 4:33if you want to get ahead financially.
- 4:35So I'd love to spend this episode.
- 4:37I know you're the queen of side hustles
- 4:40and of really making the most of the money you have
- 4:42and making more money.
- 4:43And I think that that really nifty approach to money,
- 4:48not just saving, but also making more,
- 4:50is super, super helpful for people
- 4:53that feel almost like victims of their circumstance.
- 4:56Like, oh no, this is not what I was hoping to find.
- 4:58So that's really what I would love to focus on today.
- 5:01And I feel like you can only budget so much.
- 5:04Like you only have a limited amount of money
- 5:07and so you could be a queen of budgeting, man.
- 5:09You could be so good.
- 5:10You could have like everything split off perfectly
- 5:13but it's like you're still limited
- 5:15by the amount that you're earning.
- 5:17So like how can you go and invest and increase your wealth
- 5:20if you just kept at the amount that you're bringing in?
- 5:23Like I think budgeting is so amazing
- 5:25and I'll never speak badly about it
- 5:27but it can only do so much.
- 5:29Like it's not gonna solve your problems and make you rich.
- 5:31That's the reality.
- 5:32I know and I think for people who aren't earning
- 5:35as much as they would like to be,
- 5:37but they're trying to follow this.
- 5:39They might have found that their essentials
- 5:42and then even just having a little bit of fun
- 5:44with their fun money means there's actually just nothing.
- 5:47There's no 20% because yeah,
- 5:49you can adjust how much you're spending
- 5:51in terms of your essentials kind of
- 5:53but that one's a bit more set.
- 5:55The fun piece, yeah, cool.
- 5:57You could totally cut that out.
- 5:59But also I don't know.
- 6:01I feel conflicted by this because it's the idea of,
- 6:04do you live now?
- 6:05Should you be restricting yourself to the point where,
- 6:07you know, you're sacrificing the fun for the future
- 6:09and we'll get to all of that in a second.
- 6:11But in, you know, tradition as of,
- 6:14I mean, is it a tradition we've done it now
- 6:15the South for the episode fire?
- 6:16I guess we can kind of call it a tradition.
- 6:18We would love to start just by a quick little snapshot
- 6:22of who's in the red and who's in the green.
- 6:25Never, not a million years, absolutely not.
- 6:28In the red.
- 6:29Green with envy or green.
- 6:34I kind of, I'm impressed with myself
- 6:36at the moment with my personal spending.
- 6:38I've really rained it in.
- 6:39I haven't, I really can't remember the last time
- 6:42they went out and bought something.
- 6:43So I'm really impressed with myself.
- 6:45So I feel like in that regards them in the green,
- 6:47but because I'm renovating it doesn't mean
- 6:50that like I'm going to be in the red for the next 10 years.
- 6:53Do you know what I mean?
- 6:53Every single week is going to be a bit rough.
- 6:56So I don't know.
- 6:57I think last time we said something about an orange
- 6:59so I kind of want to bring that back.
- 7:00Can we be in the orange again?
- 7:02Like I'm going to be like, I'm not good.
- 7:05But I do think and we can speak about this.
- 7:07Maybe it's another time and another conversation
- 7:09with regards to how you're making money through property.
- 7:11But also you're in the orange slash red,
- 7:13but it's an investment.
- 7:15I think it's always so different to being,
- 7:18you're not going to be able to get out of the amount
- 7:20you're spending on your house in a couple of weeks
- 7:22as a long term investment.
- 7:23So it's kind of almost, I would think
- 7:27if it is zoomed out from your monthly budget
- 7:29because you're investing.
- 7:31But totally, totally, but no, what about you though?
- 7:33I'm so bored of saying I'm in the red,
- 7:35but I'm in the red again.
- 7:36The reason I'm in the red this month
- 7:38is because so I recently taken over
- 7:41managing the curve finances as well as my personal finances.
- 7:44And I think what I've noticed
- 7:47is when I have accountability in anything in my life,
- 7:49I was even speaking to my cousin the other day saying,
- 7:52living with a partner, I find my accountability
- 7:55for everything is actually better.
- 7:56Even just small stuff like,
- 7:58I don't want to be scrolling on my phone and bed.
- 8:00I feel embarrassed by that.
- 8:01So I don't do it when he's around.
- 8:03But if it's too hot and we've in separate rooms,
- 8:07I will spend half an hour scrolling.
- 8:09So in the same way that this accountability thing,
- 8:11I've all of a sudden realized,
- 8:13like I always knew it with things like going to the gym,
- 8:15going with a friend, I find easier.
- 8:17But because I'm now doing the business finances,
- 8:20I used to be quite good at submitting,
- 8:22paying myself back, you know,
- 8:23in terms of if I've spent something on a work expense,
- 8:28whereas I've noticed in the last couple of weeks
- 8:29getting really lazy with that
- 8:31because it's up to me to pay me back.
- 8:33And so we did like a celebration dinner,
- 8:35a couple of weeks ago,
- 8:36we've got some exciting news that I think we've told you
- 8:38about like off-mic that we're going to announce in July.
- 8:41But basically we did a celebration,
- 8:44got over on flowers and had a nice dinner
- 8:46and did speeches, it was really cute.
- 8:48And I probably spent about maybe 400 pounds.
- 8:52And that was meant to be business, you know, spending.
- 8:55But I haven't reimbursed myself
- 8:57and I think I keep going to,
- 8:58and that's why I had this meltdown at the train station.
- 9:00I'm like, how am I two weeks into this month
- 9:03and I'm already declining to pay for my train?
- 9:05And it's just as because I've lost track of what was where,
- 9:09because I spent money that technically
- 9:12shouldn't have come out of my personal account.
- 9:14And now it's just like a shambles.
- 9:15You know, sometimes when you're like,
- 9:17oh, I'm so far gone with the admin now.
- 9:19Yeah, exactly.
- 9:20You give up.
- 9:21Yeah, I honestly, I'm a bit like, oh shit,
- 9:23like what do I do now?
- 9:25I think all the time, and I think one thing is
- 9:27that you've got to, staying on top of it
- 9:28is actually so important.
- 9:29Otherwise, like what you said,
- 9:30you'll feel so overwhelmed that you just go, I give up.
- 9:32I think that that's also flowing into other parts of my life.
- 9:35This is not going to be a therapy session,
- 9:37and we are going to move into more helpful advice.
- 9:40Yeah, I was actually saying to Hannah off mic,
- 9:43I feel kind of angry and frustrated,
- 9:45and yes, that could be my lootial face and hormones,
- 9:49but also I just think that I always underestimate
- 9:53how much stress in my finances,
- 9:56my personal finances comes into how I feel
- 9:59in other parts of my life.
- 10:00And coming in this morning like, yeah, fine.
- 10:03I had to stand on the side to figure out
- 10:05where I'm taking money from to tap onto the train, whatever.
- 10:08But I felt this deep sense of frustration,
- 10:11not just that, just kind of this weird rage feeling.
- 10:15And I don't often get that,
- 10:16but I know I get that when I'm really, really, really overwhelmed.
- 10:20And the only thing that I have to feel
- 10:23very overwhelmed about right now is that, like I'm fine.
- 10:26Work is fine, it's good, everything is great.
- 10:28I'm not like in this big spiral,
- 10:31but I think that recognizing how much your finances
- 10:34can impact the way that you feel and your mood,
- 10:36it's actually kind of enormous.
- 10:38Well, for me, I find it is quite big.
- 10:40Oh, massive.
- 10:40I think people don't realize the correlation
- 10:42between the weight that your finances can hold on you.
- 10:46And I'm feeling as well, you know,
- 10:47with the renovation stuff,
- 10:48and I had the biggest meltdown the other day,
- 10:51and I just sat in the car and I just cried and cried.
- 10:54And I think it was like the deepest,
- 10:56like just, you just don't know what to do, you know?
- 10:58So I think it is the reality,
- 10:59is like money does hold so much weight over you,
- 11:03and your feelings and your emotions,
- 11:04and it is good to address it as well.
- 11:06But I think because money traditionally is so taboo,
- 11:08you can't talk about it with people,
- 11:10so you've got this massive part of your life
- 11:11that's weighing you down, you can't talk about it.
- 11:13So I think it is good to recognise this.
- 11:15Yeah, and it's so interesting you say that you had
- 11:17this sort of like big moment.
- 11:19I do think there's something,
- 11:20and that is especially for you, you know,
- 11:21like you've speak sort of openly about
- 11:23not spinning outside of your means,
- 11:25and like budgeting for things that you want to pay for.
- 11:27And when you have a renovation,
- 11:29that ends up costing more than what you expected,
- 11:31and you're having to then like relook at everything.
- 11:33Yeah.
- 11:34When you go from feeling in control,
- 11:35kind of like I have in a much smaller capacity
- 11:37than my personal finances,
- 11:38to then feeling out of control, it can be a lot.
- 11:40Especially when you're like,
- 11:41I've done all this stuff,
- 11:43but I did the things I was meant to do,
- 11:45I've been planned, you know, like stuff happens
- 11:47and you kind of can't control it.
- 11:48But I don't know, maybe the learning is like,
- 11:50it's actually just okay, like emotions are a part of being human,
- 11:53you're doing your best, like it's fine
- 11:55that you've gone over budget, it's not ideal,
- 11:56but you'll figure it out.
- 11:57Yeah.
- 11:58But maybe just like giving yourself the space to feel,
- 12:00you know, and connect the pieces.
- 12:02Like it's just so weird when that stuff starts
- 12:05to become more obvious.
- 12:06And you're like, oh, A plus B equals C.
- 12:10Totally, and I think it's nice though
- 12:11that people also feel like,
- 12:13oh yeah, I'm in the same boat as well.
- 12:14And like we're all in the same boat.
- 12:16Like literally we all are.
- 12:17So we all feel the same things,
- 12:18whether it's on a smaller scale or larger scale,
- 12:20like it is, it's the same.
- 12:22That's a really good lead in actually Hannah,
- 12:23because basically what I wanted to speak about today
- 12:26is the idea that it's this human feeling
- 12:30where you measure your accounts and you realize
- 12:34you can't afford to do all the things you want to do,
- 12:36buy all the things that you want,
- 12:37and you don't have money left over
- 12:39to save for and invest the type of life you want in the future.
- 12:42And I think that when you start tracking things closer
- 12:46and you get more visibility,
- 12:47you then start to realize, oh my gosh,
- 12:50I really have to prioritize
- 12:51when you have to pull back on something here
- 12:53or you may never have had to consider in such an obvious way.
- 13:00The fact that you have a finite amount of finances
- 13:03and lots of things that you want to do,
- 13:05it's a really human experience.
- 13:06Do you remember the first time you did your budget
- 13:09or even maybe it's a time recently
- 13:11and you had to face that harsh reality of,
- 13:15okay, I'm gonna have to cut back on things
- 13:17before you went to bringing more money in.
- 13:20How do you deal with the emotional side
- 13:23of having to decide what gets cut
- 13:25or what you no longer spend on?
- 13:28Yeah, well, I feel like there were two times
- 13:30in particular where I had to relook at my budget
- 13:33quite closely and go, oh my goodness,
- 13:35I need to start culling.
- 13:37The first time was when I became a university student,
- 13:40I went from working full time, I was in Annie in London
- 13:42and I became a university student
- 13:43and I was like, holy, like I actually have to relook
- 13:46at my priorities and relook at where my money was going.
- 13:49And then the second time was when I made the leap
- 13:51which was crazy going from full time work
- 13:54to only 10 hours per week
- 13:56because I was gonna work on my businesses.
- 13:58And I remember going, oh my gosh,
- 13:59I need to make 10 hour a week job, cover my expenses.
- 14:04I need to live off 10 hours, which wasn't a lot of money.
- 14:07And I remember like, I had my budget,
- 14:10so I'd written down all my like,
- 14:11this percentage goes here and here
- 14:13and I just went full, like I just shrunk everything.
- 14:16My shopping went from 200 a month to 50 a month.
- 14:19My entertainment dropped from $100 to $10.
- 14:23And how I ended up doing this was through substitutes.
- 14:26Like substitutes and going, actually,
- 14:29I love catching up my friends.
- 14:31I always go for coffee or for like,
- 14:33not much, I wasn't like big back then
- 14:35but I would go for like an iced chocolate or something
- 14:37because I'm not a coffee gal.
- 14:38And I was like, well why don't I just go for a walk
- 14:40and skip the whole coffee thing?
- 14:42Or like, you know, if you go out for cocktails
- 14:44or you go out for drinks,
- 14:46why don't you just pre-drink at home maybe?
- 14:47I know, it's like a little bit cheaper.
- 14:49So it's like, it's still doing the things
- 14:51that bring you joy, but how can you do it on a budget?
- 14:54Yeah, and I also think, I don't know if this is,
- 14:57I love that I'm asking you help man
- 14:59and I'm giving advice as if I'm doing it myself,
- 15:01which I'm not.
- 15:02I need to cut stuff out of my budget for sure.
- 15:05But also, I think if you can see it as a period of time.
- 15:08So for example, it's not forever.
- 15:11As long as you're not ever gonna go to a restaurant again
- 15:13and you're never gonna have a cocktail out.
- 15:16But maybe the sacrifice is for six months.
- 15:20Totally.
- 15:21You just, and I also wonder if this sort of saying no
- 15:25or finding a work around, if you just make that the goal
- 15:28every time you go to be asked to do something,
- 15:31you don't have to constantly debate whether or not you can
- 15:33because I've got some friends who,
- 15:35I know they just had these rules for themselves
- 15:37where in London, things are really expensive,
- 15:39especially going out for meals and drinks.
- 15:42So they'll always be the one to pick the location
- 15:45and it'll be a pub, not a restaurant.
- 15:47Or they'll always say no to group dinners
- 15:49because they know they're gonna be,
- 15:51you know, they have these workarounds
- 15:52that are kind of their non-negotiables.
- 15:54You almost need to find one of those boundaries for yourself
- 15:56and then not have to constantly negotiate
- 15:59with yourself every time
- 16:00because I think it's like the emotional piece of saying no
- 16:03if you're deciding would each thing
- 16:05rather than deciding from the outset.
- 16:08So maybe it also reduces the sort of willpower
- 16:10that you have to rely on.
- 16:11One thing that I talk about a lot on my platforms
- 16:14is visualizing your savings.
- 16:16Or what are you saving towards?
- 16:17Because otherwise, if you're going,
- 16:19oh, I just need to like not go on and buy coffee
- 16:21because I need to save money.
- 16:22That's really hard to do.
- 16:24Okay, say for example, you're saving to go to Europe.
- 16:27Oh, that's right, I'm not gonna buy that coffee
- 16:28because I'm saving to go to Europe.
- 16:30That's so much easier to do.
- 16:31It's so much easier to go, yeah, okay, no, like all good.
- 16:34I don't need to have a coffee.
- 16:35I don't need to go and buy another cocktail.
- 16:37Like I'm all good.
- 16:38So I think it's really important to have the reason why.
- 16:41So for me, when I went from full-time work
- 16:43to 10 hours a week, it was going,
- 16:45well, no, I'm not gonna buy that top
- 16:46because it means I get to do what I absolutely love.
- 16:48And I'm getting to build on my businesses.
- 16:50I'm getting to grow my businesses.
- 16:52So it's having something that you can actually go,
- 16:54yeah, no, I'm doing this for a reason.
- 16:55That's really important.
- 16:57Okay, so let's say someone's looking at their budget
- 17:00and they realize they need to do what you did,
- 17:01which is call out stuff to have more money as a starting point.
- 17:06It's almost like circling the things
- 17:09that there's a bit of flex on.
- 17:10I mean, things like your mortgage,
- 17:12or your rent, or 60 on groceries is like not a lot.
- 17:18So it's looking at the things that you could flex on,
- 17:23putting those to the side,
- 17:25trying to cut them down and then almost,
- 17:27maybe making even a mantra or a thing,
- 17:30the reason why you're doing that.
- 17:32So every time you restrict yourself from it,
- 17:35you can kind of reinforce the reason why.
- 17:38Because I think that it's almost like,
- 17:40in a way, everyone laughs at me for my vision board
- 17:43that I have on my computer.
- 17:44Oh, it's just about to say a vision board.
- 17:45You need a vision board.
- 17:46So I think I'm going to say my blank side.
- 17:47I mean, I look at it now.
- 17:48I actually didn't do one at the set of this year.
- 17:50I did it the set of last year
- 17:51and I look at the things that are on it.
- 17:52It's so funny as well.
- 17:53There's this girl dancing,
- 17:54looking like so sexy
- 17:55because I really wanted to dance class.
- 17:57Oh, it's every time I open it.
- 17:58It's like quite horny.
- 17:59And people are like,
- 18:00Oh, what's the,
- 18:01so I'm on it's dancing.
- 18:03I am, have you sure?
- 18:05Oh, no, I have an I'm going, I need to do it
- 18:07because I really feel so,
- 18:09it's so fun to dance.
- 18:11I'm not good at it,
- 18:12but I enjoy it.
- 18:12But anyway,
- 18:13pointers, I actually have done a huge amount of what's on there
- 18:17because it's this constant reminder.
- 18:19Yeah, maybe it's if you're struggling emotionally
- 18:22to cut stuff out,
- 18:23put on your phone screen
- 18:24or something,
- 18:25the thing that you're choosing instead
- 18:26to every time you got to swipe your phone,
- 18:28you see the reason why you're not swiping.
- 18:31But yeah, you kind of do have to hack your brain a bit, right?
- 18:34Because it's unbelievably easy
- 18:37to just make those decisions in the moment.
- 18:39If you're not constantly trying to reinforce
- 18:41the better thing
- 18:42that you're choosing at a later date.
- 18:44Totally.
- 18:45And I guess it's not a no,
- 18:46it's like a not yet,
- 18:47like or not now.
- 18:48I think that's kind of the important thing is
- 18:50budgeting is not about restricting yourself.
- 18:52So budgeting,
- 18:53like we don't want you to feel like you're living this life
- 18:55that's so tight and you're not,
- 18:57not able to do the fun things that you want to be doing.
- 18:59It's, I think the important thing is is that you,
- 19:02you have that balance as well,
- 19:03but potentially like what we talked about,
- 19:06there is going to be a period of time
- 19:07where maybe you do need to buckle,
- 19:09what do they say?
- 19:09You need to buckle down or something?
- 19:10Knuckle down, knuckle down, knuckle down.
- 19:13But also why knuckle down?
- 19:14Like are we on all fours?
- 19:17I think that that's all why though.
- 19:19Making effort to a-know your numbers
- 19:21but be almost attaching emotions to things
- 19:24is actually really, really helpful.
- 19:26You know, for me, I would love to buy a dog.
- 19:30I really, really, really want a dog,
- 19:31but I also don't want to have a dog
- 19:33and not be able to go away and pay for really good care for it
- 19:36or pet insurance for the dog.
- 19:38Maybe it's like I need to put a cute dog on my background
- 19:41so that every time I choose to not spend the things
- 19:43that I've cut out of my budget,
- 19:45yeah, I can see that.
- 19:46And I'm like, oh, cute.
- 19:47I'm getting a dog one day totally.
- 19:48And I think we'll talk about that next time as well
- 19:50that we, about the power of saving
- 19:52and the power of what your mind can do as well
- 19:54to visualize the saving.
- 19:55Because otherwise it's really hard,
- 19:57a really, really, really hard.
- 19:58If you don't visualize it,
- 19:59your mind is a freaking powerful thing,
- 20:01yeah, you're powerful.
- 20:03One of the things that I wanted to talk about
- 20:05is the idea of, yeah, bringing more in
- 20:09because this is your, I want to say bread and butter,
- 20:11but I just think there's not that many people
- 20:14that have had so much experience in side hustles.
- 20:18But side hustles, I think make it sound like you're doing
- 20:21an entire new job, which maybe in some cases you have
- 20:24and is possible.
- 20:26But ultimately, what we wanted to talk about today
- 20:29is the fact that you may feel like there's only so much
- 20:32you can do to control what you do with the money
- 20:35once it's there.
- 20:36There's a whole other lever that you can pull
- 20:40which is the money coming into your account.
- 20:42There's only so much that you can budget with your income
- 20:45until you realize I actually have to start earning more.
- 20:48So I think that's the part where you go
- 20:50when you look at your budget and go, oh, I actually,
- 20:53in order for me to invest the money that I want to invest
- 20:55to route to life that I want to reach,
- 20:57I am going to need to start bringing in money
- 20:59and there's so many different ways that you can do that
- 21:01whether you're looking at asking for a pay rise,
- 21:04work your way up in a company,
- 21:05but I think a really easy way is a side hustle,
- 21:08a side hustle as literally as we talked about,
- 21:10it's something on the side, it's in the name,
- 21:12it's on the side.
- 21:13And it's something you do when you're a uni student
- 21:16or when you're working full time as well.
- 21:18A lot of these things that I'm going to share next,
- 21:21the side hustle that I tried,
- 21:22you can literally do in your own free time as well.
- 21:25So I think, yeah, that's really important
- 21:27that when you look at your budget and you go, oh, my gosh,
- 21:29there's only so much I can budget.
- 21:30That's kind of the turning point when you realize,
- 21:32okay, I need to potentially look into
- 21:35another sorts of income.
- 21:36Hannah, you are arguably one of the most entrepreneurial people
- 21:42ever. You know, you have about 105 businesses.
- 21:46So for someone that's listening to this,
- 21:48who's thinking, I'm not really an entrepreneur,
- 21:50I don't see myself in that way,
- 21:51I don't really ever actually want to have my own business.
- 21:54So then maybe then as a byproduct of that feeling
- 21:57like side hustles maybe isn't for them.
- 22:00Could we maybe reframe that?
- 22:02Because I think that the idea of side hustle
- 22:05has almost turned into the expectation you start something
- 22:08and then it turns into your full time thing.
- 22:11Yeah, at all. Yeah.
- 22:12And that's not really the case, right?
- 22:13The whole point here is actually, it's just extra money.
- 22:16It's not a full, you're not trying to do a career shift.
- 22:20You're not necessarily trying to evolve this
- 22:22into something bigger.
- 22:23It's just looking at what are your skills,
- 22:25what time do you have and how can you use that
- 22:28as an exchange to bring more money in?
- 22:30100% all my side hustles that I did
- 22:32were not about creating another business
- 22:34or another company.
- 22:35They are really easy ways for anyone across the world
- 22:39to jump in and get some extra income.
- 22:42Like it is really, it is a really easy way.
- 22:44What are some of the best ones that you've done?
- 22:47Maybe we start with the most successful
- 22:49all the ones that kind of took you by surprise
- 22:51as actually being quite good.
- 22:53As examples of ones that ideally aren't so heavy
- 22:56on the lift in terms of what someone has to do,
- 22:59but actually has quite a big payback.
- 23:01Well, okay, I first of all want to say,
- 23:03you know how on my tech talk,
- 23:05there's a lot of how to make like $9,000 an hour
- 23:08if you follow me and you do this.
- 23:10It's like, honestly, I have to preface
- 23:12before I get into all these side hustles
- 23:15that you actually are required to work.
- 23:17These are not passive income ideas.
- 23:20Like more legit.
- 23:21I think so many people are wanting it sad.
- 23:24Okay, I'm gonna say this,
- 23:25but I think a lot of the younger generation
- 23:27are just wanting easy get rich quick.
- 23:31These side hustles require actual hours
- 23:34of you physically being there.
- 23:35And I think this is, it's quite sad
- 23:38that everyone is trying to do the online,
- 23:41the printables on Etsy.
- 23:42They're trying to find these real passive ways
- 23:45that they can make money.
- 23:46These side hustles, they take a bit of a hard money, you know,
- 23:50like you are actually going to have to work.
- 23:53But I think that's just the one thing
- 23:54that I want to preface before we get into it.
- 23:55No, I think that's a really good starting point.
- 23:58You have to decide, are you willing to either give up
- 24:02spending on something to have more money
- 24:04or work harder to have more money?
- 24:07I listened to someone the other day,
- 24:08it was a friend of a friend and for context,
- 24:12the sky is probably 33, you know,
- 24:15he's not exactly young.
- 24:18And he absolutely has not built passive income
- 24:21or particularly exciting career, sorry, to be rude.
- 24:24But he said something along the lines of,
- 24:27you know, I just want to be able to work
- 24:28sort of like four or five hours a week.
- 24:30And, you know, but doesn't want to sacrifice
- 24:35the things he does with the money he has.
- 24:37And it's like, maybe, maybe when you're 40
- 24:39and you're incredibly experienced
- 24:41and you're just on boards, you could get there.
- 24:43But if you want more money,
- 24:45it's not just going to land in your lab.
- 24:47Totally.
- 24:48I think a lot of people say to me,
- 24:49oh my gosh, like, how did you get to the position
- 24:51that you're at?
- 24:52And I'm like, it took hours.
- 24:55It took years of 90 hour weeks.
- 24:57I was studying full time when I did all their side hustles
- 25:00and all of these side hustles
- 25:02that I'm going to go into are literally side hustles
- 25:05that you have to be present
- 25:06and you have to actually put in the hours.
- 25:08It's really sad when people think
- 25:09that they can just snap their fingers and get some money.
- 25:11I worked so hard for free for a really long time.
- 25:16Really?
- 25:17Like, I did so many internships and so many jobs
- 25:21and I was always the yes person
- 25:23that was just going over and above to try and learn
- 25:26and have a make a good impression
- 25:29so that I could propel my career
- 25:31because I knew that was the earning potential.
- 25:33And yeah, I think the same thing for me,
- 25:36a lot of people just sort of assume not
- 25:41and also not that I'm sitting here making all this money.
- 25:43But it's more anyone that is even remotely successful
- 25:46has worked insanely hard to get there
- 25:48or anyone that has a lot of money
- 25:50unless they've inherited a ridiculous amount
- 25:52has worked really hard for that.
- 25:54And I just, I think you're right.
- 25:56I think there's a bit of a disconnect between
- 25:58what people are expecting to do.
- 26:00So yeah, maybe we start looking at some of these,
- 26:03the ones that from your side were quiet.
- 26:05I love how excited you get by this.
- 26:07I honestly, this is my favorite topic.
- 26:09I'm so excited.
- 26:10Why is it?
- 26:11Is it just because it was like,
- 26:13did it take a while to figure out how to do it?
- 26:15What is it?
- 26:16Because most people are,
- 26:18A, have never tried it and be of no ideas.
- 26:20You have millions.
- 26:21Yeah, I don't know.
- 26:22I think it just like, it throws me back
- 26:24to such a good time in my life where it was hard.
- 26:27Like I was literally working
- 26:28doing so many side houses every single day.
- 26:30But I'm like, oh my gosh, I got to experience so much.
- 26:33I got to meet so many people.
- 26:34Like it was just the best time ever.
- 26:36And I just, I love helping people realize
- 26:39that you can unlock so much more of your life
- 26:42if you get in just a little bit more income
- 26:44because that, you know, $200 per week,
- 26:46you can literally invest there
- 26:47and you don't know how powerful $200
- 26:49compounded over a few years as by just doing
- 26:53that one extra side hustle.
- 26:54Like I want people to realize at their time,
- 26:59this is really controversial,
- 27:00doesn't have to necessarily like be on a Saturday
- 27:04sitting down scrolling TikTok for five hours.
- 27:06You could use those five hours
- 27:08and you can actually do a side hustle.
- 27:09And like what we said, we're prefacing,
- 27:11side hustle does not mean you have to create your own business.
- 27:14By no means these ones that I'm gonna go over
- 27:16are literally companies across the world
- 27:18that you can just join and sign up and then boom.
- 27:21Okay, let's work our way through this list.
- 27:22Okay, let's go over it.
- 27:24So my absolute top one is an extra's work.
- 27:27I, this is quite bad, but I saw that you could join up
- 27:31and I lived two hours away from Auckland
- 27:33and I decided I said to me and my brother,
- 27:35my brother's like Paul thing, he was five years old.
- 27:38He was really young and I convinced him
- 27:40to spend all of his savings to go to this extra's agency
- 27:44and you to pay $500 and you had to then sign up
- 27:47to become an extra and I was like,
- 27:49we're gonna get rich, like we're gonna be the next,
- 27:51like I'm gonna be a Naniya, you know what I mean?
- 27:53Like this is a Naniya.
- 27:55legit and so we, that is a big red flag
- 27:58and I will talk about this.
- 28:00If your extra's agency that you're wanting to sign up to
- 28:03is asking you for money upfront,
- 28:04please do not join them.
- 28:06That is literally the biggest red flag ever.
- 28:07So sadly, me and my brother, I was like young,
- 28:11I was actually like 10, I spent $500 towards this agency
- 28:15and we didn't get any work because we lived so far away.
- 28:18It is so, oh I know, shit, sorry,
- 28:21but like that's terrible.
- 28:22I know, I know, so sadly we did not get anything
- 28:26but then I moved to a different agency
- 28:28when I moved to Auckland.
- 28:29So the thing is if you're listening to this
- 28:30and you're anywhere across the world,
- 28:33basically the next biggest city really is where
- 28:36you'll get the work.
- 28:37If you live in a small city or small town,
- 28:39it's, you're not gonna get any work for extras.
- 28:42London will have heaps, but Auckland,
- 28:44Auckland is a massive hub of TV shows and movies
- 28:48that they film in Auckland.
- 28:49And so I joined up back in 2020.
- 28:53I heard about it, obviously when I was younger,
- 28:56but I learnt more about it when I was a bit older,
- 28:58signed up and I did a heap of work.
- 29:01Like I'm talking every, maybe every week,
- 29:04I was on a different TV show,
- 29:05a different Netflix show, Amazon show.
- 29:07I was in, I was in a short trip for a bit
- 29:11and then I went into being working for three months
- 29:14on the rings of power, which is the Lord of the Rings.
- 29:16And I was working on that full time.
- 29:18Now here's the great thing, okay?
- 29:19When you work on film productions, you get fed
- 29:22like really well.
- 29:24When I was on Lord of the Rings,
- 29:25I would get fed breakfast lunch and dinner
- 29:28because I was on set the whole day,
- 29:30which means there was three and a half months of my life
- 29:33where I did not go to the supermarket at all.
- 29:35Like I was fully fed and it was the best food ever.
- 29:39I feel like I gained like 10 KGs
- 29:41because I was as soon as eating the whole time was amazing.
- 29:43I mean, I want to do extra work.
- 29:44I've all of a sudden just said,
- 29:45you're right, there'll be heaps in London.
- 29:47Heaps and this is the thing.
- 29:48So the current pay that you get in New Zealand
- 29:51is $250 per day, minus tax, minus agency fees
- 29:55and agency fees is around 20%.
- 29:57So that's kind of a universal thing.
- 29:59So it isn't the most incredible amount of money
- 30:02that you can earn every day.
- 30:03However, I was a student
- 30:05and I had to study every single day.
- 30:07So I thought, hang on, why should I be studying at home?
- 30:10I should just be studying on set.
- 30:12Like I literally can bring my laptop and I can work.
- 30:15So that was one of the coolest things
- 30:16was that I was able to do what I already would be doing at home
- 30:20and just get paid for it.
- 30:21You make the most incredible friends.
- 30:23Extra's work is amazing.
- 30:24Now the other great thing about an extra agency
- 30:26and there's so many agencies.
- 30:28So if you're on Auckland,
- 30:29the best extra agencies that I recommend,
- 30:31the one that I was worth is called Fresh Talent.
- 30:33Absolutely love them.
- 30:34What Cam Talent, who was also amazing,
- 30:36we've got BGT, these heroes and villains,
- 30:39there's actually quite a few really good agencies.
- 30:41But what these agencies will also do
- 30:44is they have commercials that you could potentially audition for.
- 30:49Now this is where the big money is.
- 30:51So I did a Wendy's commercial.
- 30:53What did you have to do?
- 30:54Oh, it was really fun.
- 30:55I was a check out chick.
- 30:56And so I had the other Wendy's hat on.
- 30:57It was so fun.
- 30:58I had a check and so imagine you, quite cute.
- 31:00I was so nervous.
- 31:01I was really nervous.
- 31:02I remember the director coming up to me
- 31:03and he was like, can you like say it?
- 31:07Not.
- 31:08I don't know.
- 31:09I feel like I was saying it really like, what was the line?
- 31:11This was a Baconator ad.
- 31:12And I remember saying like no bacon in the Baconator.
- 31:16But I think I was so nervous.
- 31:17I was like no bacon in the Baconator.
- 31:19Oh, can you say it more realistic?
- 31:22So anyway, we did it like 943 times.
- 31:24But I finally, we got the tag in Happy Days.
- 31:27But you earned like $5,000 for the day.
- 31:29Like it was actually insane how much money you can earn
- 31:32as a hero on a TV commercial.
- 31:34And I remember this is the craziest thing.
- 31:36I won't disclose the company.
- 31:38But I was a featured extra in an American TVC.
- 31:43I couldn't email from my agency saying, hey, Hannah,
- 31:45I'm the final cuts come out.
- 31:47And on top of your $250 that you made per day,
- 31:51we've also realized that you are recognizable in the ad,
- 31:53which means we're going to give you an extra bonus
- 31:55of $3,000.
- 31:57No way.
- 31:57So because I was recognizable, I got $3,000.
- 32:01There's so much money to be made.
- 32:02Honestly, it's amazing.
- 32:04You know, you can't guarantee it.
- 32:05You do in order to become a hero or someone
- 32:08with a dialogue speaking that you do need
- 32:10to have some experience of acting.
- 32:12But I highly recommend it.
- 32:13Love it.
- 32:14Here for it.
- 32:15Second one.
- 32:16Mystery shopper, have you heard of these?
- 32:18Is it something to do with you go into shop pretending
- 32:21to be doing something and you're like reporting back?
- 32:23Yeah, it's so good.
- 32:25Now look, it's not the most well-paying,
- 32:27but it is really, really fun.
- 32:29So what you'd have to do is you basically,
- 32:31you go into a shop like what you said
- 32:33and you pretend that you're just a customer,
- 32:35but what you're doing is you're assessing
- 32:36like how the store's laid out.
- 32:38Is it clean?
- 32:40How well or how like fast does the person come up
- 32:43and how do they greet you?
- 32:44So you could even dress up quite incognito, you know?
- 32:47You could get a little bearer or you could have like,
- 32:50you know, you could make it quite fun.
- 32:51It's so much fun.
- 32:52I remember my very first mystery shopper was
- 32:54I had to do like a big furniture chain.
- 32:57But when I accepted the job, I was only 16
- 32:59and I had to go and like pretend that I was buying a fridge
- 33:02and so no one took me seriously.
- 33:04But no, it was, it was good.
- 33:05That's really fun, mystery shopper.
- 33:07So you could do there's extras work, mystery shopper
- 33:10and there's events work.
- 33:11Now events work, there's lots of different agencies.
- 33:14One in New Zealand's could brand spanking
- 33:16and you get to go and work at events.
- 33:18You get to be the bar star.
- 33:19I've done this.
- 33:20I've done it and I loved it and it was fun.
- 33:23All I will say is this was pre-being aware
- 33:26of the power of being a young woman
- 33:28and I didn't love, I mean it was almost like
- 33:32this unknown sexual contract that you didn't know
- 33:34was going on and if you were a bit flirty, you got tubs
- 33:37and I think in hindsight I was like,
- 33:39that was a bit of a key and I didn't love that.
- 33:40But I worked places where people were really drunk
- 33:44like the racers, stuff like that.
- 33:46But then it was kind of fun though.
- 33:47Did you find it fun though?
- 33:49I did find it fun.
- 33:50I found it really good to with friends.
- 33:51I liked the idea of if it was on a Saturday,
- 33:54we could go and do it together.
- 33:55So at least you had friends there.
- 33:56I mean all this stuff, you know,
- 33:58back to what you said about like it's hard work.
- 34:00You're on your feet for 12 hours.
- 34:01It's definitely, but it is fun.
- 34:04It's better than being, I mean I've done reception work
- 34:08and stuff like that and I mean it's way more fun
- 34:10being out serving stuff.
- 34:11So much fun and I would always work at festivals
- 34:15because I mean that I got the free ticket
- 34:17to the festival afterwards.
- 34:18So this is how I save money as I never paid
- 34:20for shows or anything else in John.
- 34:22I just listened to him while I was like
- 34:23serving some, you know, some drinks.
- 34:25So it's like win-win, you know, you're making money.
- 34:28So that was really fun.
- 34:29Events work.
- 34:30Supermarket sampling.
- 34:32Oh.
- 34:33You know what you go into the supermarkets
- 34:34and you see someone standing there giving out samples?
- 34:36They're being paid by an agency.
- 34:38And this is really fun.
- 34:39It's like slightly embarrassing.
- 34:42It was so slightly.
- 34:43But it's quite good though.
- 34:44I think if you're a good salesperson, you do,
- 34:46because you calculate how many bags of products
- 34:49do you have in store and how many did you sell.
- 34:51And it's quite a cool way to try and like
- 34:53test your sales techniques, you know.
- 34:56So supermarket sampling is really good.
- 34:57So we've talked about extra's work, mystery shopper,
- 35:00events work, supermarket sampling, pet sitting.
- 35:04Oh.
- 35:05Sign me up.
- 35:06This is so good.
- 35:07This is amazing, okay.
- 35:09When I was a student and I was living in my flat,
- 35:13it was a pretty average flat.
- 35:14Single glazing, it was freezing.
- 35:16I was just going around and literally staying at people's houses
- 35:20as a pet sitter.
- 35:22I think I stayed at like 50 people's places.
- 35:25It was kind of rogue.
- 35:26But you would literally stay there and look after people's pets
- 35:28and dogs.
- 35:29Can you also do dog walking, looking after dogs,
- 35:33but not actually living in their house?
- 35:35Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 35:36But does it make more money if you're living in?
- 35:39So in Auckland or New Zealand,
- 35:41there is a company called Porsche,
- 35:43highly recommend, highly highly recommend.
- 35:45I remember charging, I think only like $50 or $60 a night,
- 35:49which isn't a lot of money when you think about it.
- 35:51You're like, wait, actually, especially if you get a request
- 35:55and someone's like, hey, I want you there all day,
- 35:57like 24 hours a day.
- 35:58It's like $50 is not worth it.
- 36:00But if they're like, if it's just a cat
- 36:01and they're like, yeah, we really want you there
- 36:03for the evening and you can feed the cat
- 36:05and you go to sleep and wake up.
- 36:06It's like, well, you have to do that anyway.
- 36:07You have to go to sleep anyway.
- 36:08You may as well just be at someone else's house.
- 36:10And okay, there was one store.
- 36:12I have to share this.
- 36:14So I got a request from a lady.
- 36:17And she was like, hey, a little bit of a different one.
- 36:19I own 16 cats.
- 36:23I don't know if you know what this is.
- 36:24This is literally my dream.
- 36:25This is my dream.
- 36:26I was like, sign me up, sign me up.
- 36:29Honestly, I went in there and it was an absolute nightmare.
- 36:33Like, I've never in my life been so overwhelmed
- 36:35with so many cats.
- 36:36It's stunk, so badly.
- 36:39Cats, everyone, imagine just like them calling all over you,
- 36:42which is totally fine if you love cats.
- 36:45But here's the thing, I had my brand new journal
- 36:47and it was like a fabric covered journal.
- 36:50And next thing, I hear the scratching noise.
- 36:53I look over and there's this cat clawing
- 36:55at my fabric journal and like this really pulled it all up.
- 36:58Has it put your off-cats indefinitely?
- 36:59Or I love my cat.
- 37:01But 16, I was like, it is kind of borderline getting crazy.
- 37:04She was a crazy cat lady.
- 37:05But that was, pet sitting is really good.
- 37:07House sitting, pet sitting, dog walking.
- 37:10It is really easy work.
- 37:11If you love going for a morning walk,
- 37:13why don't you just see if there's someone
- 37:15that wants you to also walk their dog for 20 bucks?
- 37:17Get paid to do what you're already going to be doing.
- 37:19Do you know what I also think about all of these things?
- 37:22I think that if you, if you can in your head,
- 37:25almost preface the money that you're making
- 37:27from this is going to your investments.
- 37:29Therefore, it's not just 50, it's actually 1,000
- 37:32when it's compounded, it'll be more motivating.
- 37:35If you're staying the night with cats
- 37:37calling all over your face for 50
- 37:40and that's actually only paying for you to go out
- 37:42for one dinner, as it worth it, probably not.
- 37:45So I almost feel like if you can reframe the money
- 37:48that is perhaps not as much as you would earn
- 37:50in your full-time job.
- 37:53But if you think about that money compounded,
- 37:55it's so much more than maybe it's the motivation
- 38:01you need to take less for something you wouldn't normally do.
- 38:05Totally.
- 38:06And like, you're all, I know I'm a big believer
- 38:09that every experience is going to help shape you into
- 38:12a better person like my grandma, she said this to me
- 38:15and it's a quote that I love to live by.
- 38:17She said, each day and each experience
- 38:18shapes the person that you will become.
- 38:20So even the supermarket sampling job
- 38:22where you're standing there and you're trying to sell,
- 38:24you'd even know about that skill
- 38:26can help you so much 10 years time.
- 38:28You know, it's funny actually,
- 38:30this is quite a crazy story is that
- 38:32there was a company that I sampled literally 10 years ago
- 38:36and the company now, I'm working with them.
- 38:39Like I'm actually going to work with them.
- 38:41Yeah, it's a company that I absolutely love
- 38:43and it's just crazy because I was there
- 38:45from the very outset and they just launched
- 38:47and I was there and I was there telling people,
- 38:50educating people and then yeah, 10 years later,
- 38:52we're working alongside of them for their community
- 38:54and they remember the fact that I did
- 38:56that some supermarket sampling as well.
- 38:59I actually think that's a good example
- 39:00of your also investing assets
- 39:03which are not necessarily tangible at the time.
- 39:06When I was using that example of working for free,
- 39:08the contacts, the skills, the things that I learned,
- 39:11yeah, maybe the pay wasn't there
- 39:14and I personally don't think I would get an intern
- 39:16for the curve that wasn't being paid.
- 39:18I think it's kind of not okay now,
- 39:20especially when the cost of living is absurd
- 39:22but it's not just that exchange in that moment,
- 39:27all of those things add up and even the idea
- 39:30of selling at a supermarket, yeah,
- 39:32maybe you're not going to be doing that as your job
- 39:33but sales is the most integral part of almost every job
- 39:39if you can sell and speak to people,
- 39:42it's an amazing skill.
- 39:42So I think it's actually a really good thing to bring up.
- 39:45Totally and even like I would try and get to know the couple
- 39:49and actually like drop them down in the back of my mind
- 39:52or even write them down as who they are and what they do
- 39:54because you never know that that connection
- 39:56could help you so much more.
- 39:57I think there was a crazy stat
- 39:59that each new person that you meet is with $50 in your life.
- 40:03Yeah, you obviously leave a good impression as well
- 40:05because you never know what they're going to mean for you
- 40:07in the future.
- 40:08I actually did have a side hustle
- 40:09which was babysitting when I was working full time
- 40:12and I was like 21 and yeah,
- 40:14that woman was a head of market at this big media company
- 40:17and she ended up being kind of a mentor
- 40:19because I got to know her in a way that was so intimate
- 40:22and I was looking after her kid
- 40:24so she was really grateful for that.
- 40:25Like yes, she was paying me but yeah,
- 40:27I think maybe it's not the traditional way
- 40:30to meet people or to open up doors for opportunities
- 40:33but it definitely does do that as a byproduct.
- 40:36And yeah, going on to what you mentioned about babysitting,
- 40:40babysitting, Nanny is a really good side hustle as well.
- 40:43There's so many different agencies.
- 40:44There was one amazing one in London
- 40:46that I used all the time.
- 40:48I was a Nanny that had the school hours off
- 40:50and so while I was getting paid my full-time salary
- 40:53I'd also go and babysit using on this app
- 40:56and I'd go and yeah,
- 40:57it was the most incredible side hustle
- 40:59because you are also making a difference
- 41:01in a child's life and an actual human's life.
- 41:03Have you ever been told you're perhaps
- 41:04the most hardworking person ever?
- 41:06No.
- 41:07No, I'm being serious.
- 41:09But do people say that?
- 41:10Because I mean, there's most people are not this driven.
- 41:13I don't know, I just love to be busy.
- 41:15No, it's so good.
- 41:16Do you have any side hustles that you've done
- 41:18that you can hand on heart say this
- 41:19is not worth your time, don't bother?
- 41:20I think it was going back to what I mentioned before
- 41:22about the Etsy products.
- 41:23Like look, that was me going,
- 41:25you know, well, why don't I try this get rich quit comes again?
- 41:27Like what, this guy's literally making $9,000 every minute.
- 41:30Like why don't I also try that as well?
- 41:32And what was it, is it selling stuff on eBay?
- 41:34No, on Etsy, like selling a printable
- 41:36and you create a printable and you chuck it online
- 41:38and people can buy it.
- 41:39Look, it just doesn't work.
- 41:41And these are things that are like,
- 41:42they meant to be this passive income ideas, some work.
- 41:45Like I follow people on TikTok
- 41:47and they're earning amazing money
- 41:48through these passive streams.
- 41:50But I just think,
- 41:51I don't know, I'm a big believer
- 41:52and you just got to get out there and actually work
- 41:54and put in the hours.
- 41:55I also on YouTube.
- 41:57So look, this is a site also that I dabbled in,
- 42:01made me a solid zero dollars.
- 42:03So apparently what something that makes people millions
- 42:07is you know, when you play the YouTube video
- 42:10and it's just like three hours of like,
- 42:11I am a fireplace.
- 42:12Yes, love that.
- 42:13Like that person's literally getting paid bank,
- 42:15like absolute bank and I was like,
- 42:17sign me up, let me do it.
- 42:18So what I did is I created this royalty free YouTube video
- 42:22for three hours long of like piano music
- 42:24and I called it the best studying playlist.
- 42:26And I had just like beautiful imagery and stuff
- 42:29and there's like fireplace going and I was like,
- 42:31great, like let me just watch the money roll through.
- 42:34I think I checked the other day.
- 42:35I'm all like nine views in total.
- 42:37So I'm really not tracking that well.
- 42:39So I really think I just need to go back to my like,
- 42:41my other side houses.
- 42:42Stick to your nesting, you know?
- 42:43I know, I know.
- 42:45Newspaper delivery, look, that's a tricky one.
- 42:49That's a hard one, it's hard on the legs.
- 42:51Buy and sell clothes from op shops as well.
- 42:53There was a relatively good one.
- 42:54It just is really time consuming
- 42:56and you don't know if it's actually going to pay off.
- 42:58If you have great taste, that actually can,
- 43:01like one of my friends has this really cool brand.
- 43:03You speak all dimes vintage
- 43:04and I should find out what it's called now.
- 43:05I actually should link it in the show notes
- 43:06because she's so amazing taste and she does that.
- 43:10But yeah, it is, it's more time consuming than you think.
- 43:12You have to really have a good eye
- 43:13to pick out the right thing to be able to charge more.
- 43:16No, totally.
- 43:18Can I get a cash in burn?
- 43:20OK, so we've done the section before we did it
- 43:23at Lucy Blackstone.
- 43:24She asked her community for stories
- 43:27that were a bit absurd in terms of things
- 43:29that had to use emergency funds for and whatnot.
- 43:31And I feel like you put this out to your community
- 43:35to see what kind of weird side hustles would come in.
- 43:38Can we share some of those?
- 43:40Oh, these are crazy, OK.
- 43:42These actually really, really cool.
- 43:43So I'm going to read out these five of them.
- 43:45One girl seat, I've started macking
- 43:47university assignments at my former university.
- 43:49I earn four to $5,000 a semester.
- 43:52Isn't that crazy, depending on how many courses I look after?
- 43:55What a genius.
- 43:56That's wild.
- 43:57I'm like, that is so cool.
- 43:58Another one said, love a good side hustle.
- 44:00Once semester at university, I did a horticultural
- 44:03elective class.
- 44:04And we planted a heap of fruit trees seedlings
- 44:06by the end of the class.
- 44:07No one wanted to take them home.
- 44:08So I ended up taking them home approximately 200.
- 44:11And I repotted them into bigger pots and bigger
- 44:14and then I sold them off to the community
- 44:17and it earned about 800 bucks.
- 44:19Good on her.
- 44:20That is hard work.
- 44:21Yeah, that is hard work.
- 44:23OK, this is my absolute favorite.
- 44:25So one girl said, this is crazy.
- 44:28Literally calling a lady in America
- 44:31as her human alarm clock
- 44:33with a specific question to help her start her day right.
- 44:37No, you're joking.
- 44:38It was on Fiverr.
- 44:40I was doing voiceovers and she contacted me
- 44:43asking if I would do it.
- 44:45I was living at Thailand at the time
- 44:46so the time zone was very convenient.
- 44:48It was an evening for me, morning for her
- 44:50and she had set accountability
- 44:52sort of like questions to start her day.
- 44:54You're absolutely kidding.
- 44:57Sorry, can we wait for a second?
- 44:59Think about when you wake up.
- 45:01The last thing that you want us to hear an alarm
- 45:03to, you know, you don't want to be waking up, right?
- 45:05Everyone wants to say a sleep.
- 45:07Imagine a stranger from the other side of the world
- 45:09calling you
- 45:11in the most intimate moment.
- 45:13I wonder how she starts it.
- 45:15Does she just start with quick?
- 45:16What's the answer?
- 45:17What's pie?
- 45:18And she's frazzled, you know?
- 45:19I'm like, I wonder actually how she did it.
- 45:21Or maybe you've got a slowly easer
- 45:23and you're like, hi.
- 45:24Good morning.
- 45:25And like, maybe she's got a really beautiful voice.
- 45:27To be fair, she's a voiceover artist.
- 45:28Maybe she's got like a lovely voice.
- 45:30And in another person said,
- 45:31they solved the university notes as well.
- 45:33Which is also genius.
- 45:34You've got them.
- 45:35Is that illegal?
- 45:36Maybe not.
- 45:37Maybe we should cut that out.
- 45:39No, I'm like, I mean, I guess if you're not cheating, right?
- 45:42It's called Studio Stude Docko.
- 45:45Maybe it's not.
- 45:46I mean, I guess you're just sort of selling the notes
- 45:48you took, right?
- 45:49Exactly, exactly.
- 45:50It's fine.
- 45:51It feels a bit gossip girl, you know?
- 45:52Like Chuck having someone go to do his assignment.
- 45:55Legit, legit.
- 45:56But yeah, I think honestly, the girl, the human alarm clock,
- 45:58she wins it for me.
- 45:59Oh, that's so funny.
- 46:01One thing I think might be quite good to end on.
- 46:03And I know that this is coming from a place
- 46:07where right now, you know, you did mention at the start,
- 46:10you had a little moment to yourself and the car.
- 46:13Overworking yourself or stretching too far
- 46:17is actually, you know, can be quite detrimental
- 46:20and almost do the total opposite.
- 46:22Where maybe you burn out and know that's a really overused term
- 46:25but you get to a point where you can't even do the bare minimum
- 46:28and then you don't have the base that you started with.
- 46:31And it's because you've stretched yourself too much for side hustles
- 46:35or making more money.
- 46:37What are your thoughts on short term burs first burning out?
- 46:42Where and how do you draw the line in terms of making sure
- 46:45that you're not trying to do too much?
- 46:48I feel like I'm the worst person to ask about this.
- 46:51Oh, I, if I was to talk to my younger self,
- 46:56I think I went through this time where I hustled so hard
- 46:59that I completely neglected my health.
- 47:01Like I neglected my health, I neglected my friends and my family.
- 47:04And looking back at that, I'm like, that was not worth it.
- 47:08Okay, we're talking about side hustles
- 47:10and the importance of side hustles.
- 47:12But then like, maybe I pushed myself a little bit too much
- 47:16because I did pretty much all of those in one year
- 47:19and I was working these crazy hours.
- 47:22I guess if I just did one less,
- 47:24would I have been worse off or would I be better off?
- 47:28I probably would have been actually better off
- 47:30in terms of my mental health, my physical health,
- 47:33and my social health.
- 47:34Like I would have been more connected.
- 47:36I would have had, I would have had better friendships.
- 47:38I would have been closer to my family.
- 47:39I would have had a healthier body.
- 47:41So I think there is this really fine balancing line of going,
- 47:45okay, like how much am I waking up and clocking on and working
- 47:50and then clocking off and going to bed.
- 47:52There's no time for me to work out.
- 47:54I feel like your health is actually going to end up costing you
- 47:56a lot of money in the future.
- 47:59So actually what's worth, is it worth you actually
- 48:01burning yourself out so much right now
- 48:03and then actually that's going to cost you a lot of money.
- 48:05A lot of money in 10 years time when you find out
- 48:07that you've got fatigue and you've got all of this
- 48:09because of what happened 10 years ago.
- 48:11So I think it's that balancing line and honestly
- 48:14to be completely transparent.
- 48:15I'm still working on that and I'm still learning
- 48:18and I'm still deciding what is the best way.
- 48:22Am I saying no to more things?
- 48:24Potentially saying no to things I don't necessarily
- 48:27bring to me joy.
- 48:28But saying yes to things like meeting up with my best friend
- 48:31and actually sitting down with her and chatting
- 48:33rather than going on, I should probably work instead.
- 48:36You know, it's just fine.
- 48:37It's saying yes to the things you should say
- 48:39you should know to the things you shouldn't.
- 48:41But it is interesting as no because I think when you start
- 48:43getting on that bandwagon of I can make more
- 48:46and I can spend every minute or second earning more money,
- 48:50sitting and catching up with a friend,
- 48:52you're probably hyper aware that that's actually money
- 48:55and it can get into a bit of a toxic spiral I think.
- 48:58Totally, totally.
- 48:59So yeah, I think that's a really hard one
- 49:01and I don't have a really good answer I feel.
- 49:03It's just, it's a journey, but it's one you need to weigh up
- 49:07because what is actually worth it in the long term as well?
- 49:11Maybe we finish with an extra credit.
- 49:15I figured out how you're going to earn that extra credit.
- 49:18Maybe the extra credit here for this month,
- 49:23for anyone that has been listening to IOU this whole time
- 49:26is just to say, okay, ideally I'd love to have some more money.
- 49:29Look into some of these, make some calls,
- 49:31decide how much of your time you'd like to spend
- 49:34to bringing in more money and please let us know
- 49:37anything that you decide to do that you don't do.
- 49:40I think, yeah, like learning from Hannah in terms of hearing
- 49:43all of the things, there will be other people
- 49:45that have great side hustles or you know,
- 49:47things that don't work and things that don't.
- 49:50So, please report back with any of that.
- 49:53And Hannah, I know we did this in the last episode,
- 49:56but if anyone that would like to find more out
- 49:59about the amazing work that you're doing,
- 50:01watch all the different platforms and places
- 50:03that they can find you.
- 50:04Mainly TikTok and Instagram.
- 50:06It's just my name, Henrik Marcus.
- 50:08I've got a lot of content around.

- 50:14I do a liberator heat more on all of these individual side hustles
- 50:18and then what agencies you should use if you're in Auckland or New Zealand.

- 50:23if you've got any Christians.

- 50:26No worries, thank you.
- 50:28And that is it for IOU, some on education.
- 50:30This is now fifth instalment.
- 50:33I'm thinking we've probably got a little bit more
- 50:35we need to talk to Hannah about,
- 50:36so we might trick her on again.
- 50:37Well, third month in a row.
- 50:39Thank you, Henrik.
