- 0:00There is a tendency among human beings to react with extremes.
- 0:05Something is either yes or no, black or white, positive or
- 0:11negative. This occurs due to the linear
- 0:15nature of the mental consciousness, aided by a vital
- 0:18nature that wants to assert itself by being right.
- 0:24For the spiritual seeker, however, a much more nuanced
- 0:28approach is generally required. First, it should be recognized
- 0:33that the focus and attention needs to shift to the spiritual
- 0:37realization that the seeker sees before him.
- 0:40It is through this shift of attention and the receptivity
- 0:44that is developed that the change of consciousness actually
- 0:48takes place. At the same time, the
- 0:52receptivity can be blocked or mitigated by the limited focus
- 0:56and activities of the physical, vital and mental parts of the
- 1:00being. This is where the need to be
- 1:03observant and to address and change weaknesses, faults,
- 1:08defects comes in. A balanced approach that
- 1:13recognizes the need for both a new object of focus and an
- 1:17increasing ability to receive and incorporate the new
- 1:20consciousness turns out to be the best way for most to make
- 1:25actual progress in their spiritual pursuits.
- 1:30In his book The Mother, Sri Orbinda describes the role of
- 1:35the practitioner of yoga as aspiration, rejection,
- 1:40surrender. Aspiration is the turning of the
- 1:43focus to the Divine. Rejection is the observation and
- 1:48removal of those habits or activities of the lower nature
- 1:51that interfere with the higher force as it responds to the
- 1:55aspiration. Surrender implies acceptance of
- 1:59the response from the spiritual focus and implementation of that
- 2:04force in the mental, vital and physical aspects of the external
- 2:09being. Sri Orbindo notes quote.
- 2:15It is necessary to observe and know the wrong movements in you,
- 2:19for they are the source of your trouble and have to be
- 2:21persistently rejected if you are to be free.
- 2:26But do not be always thinking of your defects and wrong
- 2:29movements. Concentrate more upon what you
- 2:32are to be on the ideal, with the faith that since it is the goal
- 2:37before you, it must and will come to be.
- 2:42Always. Observing faults and wrong
- 2:44movements brings depression and discourages the faith.
- 2:48Turn your eyes more to the coming light and less to any
- 2:52immediate darkness. Faith, cheerfulness, confidence
- 2:57in the ultimate victory are the things that help.
- 3:01They make the progress easier and swifter.
