- 0:29Speaker 2: How are you happy? New Year? New look? Has a
- 0:33Speaker 2: New Year ever been more important to a franchise?
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm sure I don't know for this franchise, but for
- 0:39Speaker 1: other franchises quite possibly. Let's get the obligatory stuff for
- 0:43Speaker 1: this game out of the way so we can talk
- 0:44Speaker 1: about some people actually want to talk about.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:46Speaker 1: No car. We're assuming no Camara, so uh and a
- 0:50Speaker 1: lave is questionable. Who are we expecting to be the
- 0:54Speaker 1: main contributors on Sunday?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. Well, we've got Spencer Ratler starting again
- 1:02Speaker 2: at quarterback, which is interesting because we've shifted our page
- 1:06Speaker 2: to the future of this team and still every chance
- 1:11Speaker 2: we get to find out, you know, what he looks like.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I think it was promising that he had a good
- 1:16Speaker 2: half last week. He needs to have more than a
- 1:19Speaker 2: good half. But obviously all judgment will be reserved on
- 1:22Speaker 2: him till next year. But at least it's something about
- 1:25Speaker 2: the future. Maybe Clyde Edwards Hilaire could be part of
- 1:30Speaker 2: this team's future. I think he'll probably be the lead
- 1:32Speaker 2: back in this game. But man, it's it's hard. It's
- 1:37Speaker 2: hard to get excited about much else gone.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Do you have any observations Have you been able to
- 1:43Speaker 1: make any observations about Spencer Rattler through five starts?
- 1:51Speaker 2: I don't have anything conclusive on Spencer Ratler through five starts.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I mean, there might just be a certain threshold he's
- 2:00Speaker 2: were able to fully overcome. But I do like that
- 2:05Speaker 2: it hasn't looked too big for him in the sense that, like, hey,
- 2:08Speaker 2: if they decided, I don't think this is what they'll do.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I don't know for sure this is what they'll do.
- 2:12Speaker 2: But if they did decide, let's roll with him next year.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I mean I always keep coming up with Will Levis
- 2:18Speaker 2: as an example, which is not a very promising one
- 2:20Speaker 2: since he got bench this year. But like, hey, let's
- 2:23Speaker 2: let's make Will Levis or shoot, you could say, ate
- 2:25Speaker 2: O'Connell the Raiders Quarterbackord just came into the dome and
- 2:29Speaker 2: and and beat the crap out of the Saints. Like,
- 2:31Speaker 2: if you decided that's what you want to do next year,
- 2:33Speaker 2: I don't. I think that's feasible. I think he could
- 2:36Speaker 2: be your starting quarterback une in the next year. Why
- 2:38Speaker 2: you rebuild and think about the future and see if
- 2:41Speaker 2: he wants to make you rethink drafting another one a
- 2:44Speaker 2: year later. You know. And there's obviously a lot of
- 2:48Speaker 2: highs we've seen. We've seen a lot of great throws,
- 2:50Speaker 2: throws on the run, throws while jumping, throws while outside
- 2:54Speaker 2: of the pocket, making things happen. Big arm strength and
- 2:58Speaker 2: the poise and all that. So I'd like to see molism.
- 3:04Speaker 1: With the Bucks of the Falcons. I mean, obviously what
- 3:06Speaker 1: happens in Tampa will determine who's going to win the
- 3:08Speaker 1: division go on to the playoffs. Is there a preference
- 3:10Speaker 1: for New Orleans which you'd rather see happen?
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think I don't think it matters in any meaningful way.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I mean, there is obviously a You know, the best
- 3:26Speaker 2: thing you could do for your fan base is knock
- 3:28Speaker 2: the Falcons out of the playoffs because they hate the
- 3:31Speaker 2: Falcons more. And the best thing you could do for
- 3:32Speaker 2: your fan base is lose the game so you can
- 3:34Speaker 2: get a higher draft pick. But I think I think
- 3:37Speaker 2: the Saints preference would be to play well and win
- 3:40Speaker 2: in their last game on any of the off season,
- 3:42Speaker 2: so their preference be different.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'm sorry, have you looked at the draft door, Like,
- 3:50Speaker 1: is there a scenario where this I thought they were
- 3:54Speaker 1: They couldn't go higher than tenth? Is there a scenario
- 3:56Speaker 1: where they could?
- 3:56Speaker 2: They can't. They they can't do worse than tenth, which
- 3:59Speaker 2: is good. So if they win, they stay at tenth.
- 4:04Speaker 2: There are ways they could get up to ninth or
- 4:06Speaker 2: eighth if the Raiders win, which is actually possible. Like,
- 4:11Speaker 2: if you really want to get into this for fun,
- 4:13Speaker 2: root for Pittsburgh to win on Saturday, which means the
- 4:19Speaker 2: Chargers that have nothing to play for on Sunday, and
- 4:22Speaker 2: then and then maybe the Raiders can beat the Chargers.
- 4:25Speaker 2: And then the other one is the Bears. If the
- 4:28Speaker 2: Bears win a game against the Packers, if they decide
- 4:31Speaker 2: to pull their starters and don't care about seating. The
- 4:35Speaker 2: Saints can move ahead of the Bears, and then there's
- 4:37Speaker 2: an outside chance the Saints could move ahead of the Jets,
- 4:40Speaker 2: but it would come down to some percentage points things happening.
- 4:43Speaker 2: That's too sophisticated for me. So Raiders win or Bears
- 4:47Speaker 2: win are the two best ways to move up on
- 4:49Speaker 2: the two spots.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Okay, Mike triplets with US New Orleans Dot Football and
- 4:52Speaker 1: twould I have my triplet. Of course. Our chat's all
- 4:54Speaker 1: season long and brought to by Benny's car Wash. Visit
- 4:56Speaker 1: Benny's car Wash dot com Benny's car Wash dot com. Okay,
- 4:59Speaker 1: so the play game on Sunday and then the result
- 5:01Speaker 1: to be what it is, and the season will be
- 5:03Speaker 1: over mercifully and they'll move on. Everyone's talking about what
- 5:06Speaker 1: what happens. The biggest order of business be the coaching
- 5:09Speaker 1: search is do you see any scenario where Darren Rizzy
- 5:13Speaker 1: could get the job?
- 5:15Speaker 2: I mean, I cannot rule it out. It seems unlikely
- 5:19Speaker 2: to me. I think he had to really, really really
- 5:22Speaker 2: define expectations to be above and beyond and just hasn't
- 5:25Speaker 2: been able to do that. Obviously, you know, got a
- 5:28Speaker 2: lot of good qualities, but he hasn't you know, he
- 5:31Speaker 2: hasn't been able to walk on water and leave this
- 5:33Speaker 2: team beyond its reality. So I think of him as
- 5:38Speaker 2: a dark horse. But I think he'll get an interview
- 5:41Speaker 2: and be considered, and I can't completely rule it out,
- 5:46Speaker 2: but but you know, I was restacked against him.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I think, do you put how much stock do you
- 5:51Speaker 1: put into the John Gruden reports?
- 5:56Speaker 2: I mean, he may get consideration. I would be pretty
- 6:01Speaker 2: surprised if he was the final answer, not because I
- 6:05Speaker 2: think the Saints would be like shil asavagely opposed to it,
- 6:08Speaker 2: but just like his candidacy doesn't seem super strong to me,
- 6:12Speaker 2: you know, to what have you done for me lately? League?
- 6:15Speaker 2: And he's been out of it for a while, and
- 6:16Speaker 2: he wasn't having overwhelming success before that. But you know,
- 6:23Speaker 2: I mean, you know, Mike McCarthy, I don't know if
- 6:25Speaker 2: you're going to ask about him too. Like John Gruden
- 6:27Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy, there's no excitement whatsoever that I don't think
- 6:30Speaker 2: either of those names would generate from the fan base.
- 6:33Speaker 2: But they they have winning in their history, and you know,
- 6:37Speaker 2: if the team's going to stick outside the box, I
- 6:39Speaker 2: guess it's going to be the same.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Could the Gruden pairing with Derek Carr make sense if
- 6:45Speaker 1: the Saints are committed, maybe that's a better questions. Are
- 6:48Speaker 1: the Saints committed to Derek Carr? And could that make
- 6:50Speaker 1: sense with grudenen Car?
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I'm writing about that. You'll see it
- 6:54Speaker 2: on the website by the end of the night. I
- 6:56Speaker 2: don't think they should be, And I think of myself
- 6:58Speaker 2: as one of the bigger Car supporters. I think I
- 7:02Speaker 2: think Derek Carr is any tier of quarterbacks that if
- 7:05Speaker 2: the situation is right, he's a good choice for your team,
- 7:08Speaker 2: And we're seeing that around the league a lot like
- 7:11Speaker 2: as you know, the Baker Mayfield, Gino Smith, Russell Wilson.
- 7:14Speaker 2: You know, if you've got a good team, you know
- 7:16Speaker 2: you can win with him. But I do not want
- 7:18Speaker 2: to see the Thames pay forty million dollars for a
- 7:20Speaker 2: quarterback next year. I don't want to see them make
- 7:22Speaker 2: their they're coaching higher based on building around a thirty
- 7:27Speaker 2: four year old quarterback who costs forty million has had
- 7:29Speaker 2: some injury issues. So I hope, I hope that's not
- 7:32Speaker 2: the direction of the team. But I mean that is
- 7:36Speaker 2: A reason why that he may be considered.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Is do you think Derek Carr will be back?
- 7:43Speaker 2: If I had to bet on it, I would say yes.
- 7:46Speaker 2: If they let me make the decision, I would say
- 7:48Speaker 2: only if he took a substantial Paykett. Now I would
- 7:50Speaker 2: keep him. I would keep him over other veteran options
- 7:54Speaker 2: that cost about the same amount of money if he
- 7:56Speaker 2: was going to take a major major Pakett. But like
- 7:58Speaker 2: I said, I don't think Derek Carr should want to
- 8:02Speaker 2: go into free agency and have to pick another team.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I think there's some things that have been a good
- 8:07Speaker 2: fit for him here, but just there's no way I'm
- 8:10Speaker 2: paying anywhere near forty million dollars for a quarterback. There's
- 8:13Speaker 2: nothing answered for my team right now with the state
- 8:15Speaker 2: of this team.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Is there a way financially out from under that? My
- 8:19Speaker 1: mic understanding is that you look at the dead cap money,
- 8:22Speaker 1: it's going to be fifty million bucks next year he's.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Not here, well, I mean his cap number is fifty
- 8:28Speaker 2: one million, his dead number would be fifty million, So yes,
- 8:32Speaker 2: it can be done. The problem is you can't then
- 8:34Speaker 2: use his contract to do your restructure, and you would
- 8:38Speaker 2: pretty much literally have to restructure every other contract on
- 8:42Speaker 2: the team just to get under the cap. Now, you'd
- 8:45Speaker 2: be out from under cars deal in one year if
- 8:47Speaker 2: you did that. So you know, there's a light at
- 8:50Speaker 2: the end of the tunnel if you do that. But
- 8:52Speaker 2: you can't really sign any other free agents or anything. Now,
- 8:54Speaker 2: there's also creative ways to do it. You could give
- 8:57Speaker 2: him a little parting gift and say, hey, will you
- 9:00Speaker 2: lower your salary to a league minimum on the way
- 9:03Speaker 2: out the door so we can get some cap relief
- 9:05Speaker 2: and we'll give you, you know, we'll let you keep
- 9:08Speaker 2: your ten million dollar bonus as a party. Again. I mean,
- 9:10Speaker 2: they did that with Michael Thomas on his way out.
- 9:13Speaker 2: You got a million dollars for change it lowering his salary.
- 9:16Speaker 2: They do that when players retire. They did that with
- 9:18Speaker 2: Drew Brees and Malcolm Drink and so there are ways
- 9:21Speaker 2: they could do it and make it worth as while
- 9:24Speaker 2: so they're not they're not forced to keep them if
- 9:26Speaker 2: they don't want to.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Okay, So what about a timeline and pivoting back to
- 9:36Speaker 1: the code. This the Derek Carr conversation came as we
- 9:38Speaker 1: were talking about Gruden pivoting back to the coaching search
- 9:41Speaker 1: timeline for when they might like to have something done.
- 9:46Speaker 2: On the coaching search or CAR.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Well, I guess both, but start with the coach.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I mean, I think coach comes first. I think Parr
- 9:53Speaker 2: is obviously part of those conversations. The team sharing its
- 9:57Speaker 2: vision with the coach, the coach sharing his vision with
- 9:59Speaker 2: the tea. Do they align? Would they be willing to
- 10:03Speaker 2: make a different decision than what they're leaning towards based
- 10:06Speaker 2: on what a coach one? And I'm very curious. I mean,
- 10:10Speaker 2: I could see coaches wanting to keep car. I could
- 10:13Speaker 2: see coaches wanting to be like, hey, I can come
- 10:15Speaker 2: and win the nfcy stop. I believe in myself. You know,
- 10:18Speaker 2: you give me a couple of free agents here and there,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and and you give me Derek Carr. I'm going to
- 10:22Speaker 2: go win your ten games. There might be coaches that
- 10:24Speaker 2: feel that way. There might be coaches that don't want Oh,
- 10:28Speaker 2: you're getting rid of Derek Carr and signing zero free
- 10:32Speaker 2: agents while you catch up on the Caps. So I'm
- 10:34Speaker 2: gonna go three and fourteen this year. Great. But at
- 10:38Speaker 2: the same time, if if you you know, New Orleans
- 10:41Speaker 2: is a place where you could feel pretty comfortable, they're
- 10:44Speaker 2: going to give you time and patience. So if they say, hey,
- 10:47Speaker 2: this is year one of the three year plan, but
- 10:49Speaker 2: we're going to let you have time to build it,
- 10:52Speaker 2: you know, I'd like to see that be the plan,
- 10:54Speaker 2: and it's possible. So I think the coaching conversations, the
- 11:00Speaker 2: vision of this team, the long term planning for what
- 11:04Speaker 2: this team is going to look like, come first in
- 11:06Speaker 2: car comes.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Second, Okay. Mike Tripple two more things, New Orleans Out
- 11:10Speaker 1: Football on Twitter at Mike Triplett. Is there a name
- 11:15Speaker 1: that you like, like realistic that they could hire, or
- 11:19Speaker 1: if not a name, just what style of coach? Meaning
- 11:22Speaker 1: young offensive coach, retread defensive coach. I like that.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, I think there's two names that stand above
- 11:28Speaker 2: that everyone would would celebrate as a while I can't
- 11:31Speaker 2: believe they got that guy, and they're two different styles.
- 11:34Speaker 2: One is Mike Brabel, who I think is the proven
- 11:38Speaker 2: coach in this year's class that that I think should
- 11:42Speaker 2: have his choice of teams probably and therefore I don't
- 11:45Speaker 2: think it will be the Saints. And the other is
- 11:48Speaker 2: Ben Johnson, you know, the offensive wonder kin from from
- 11:51Speaker 2: Detroit who's been picky about where he wants to go,
- 11:54Speaker 2: uh and might only take one or two interviews, and
- 11:56Speaker 2: that might not be the same, so those two would
- 11:59Speaker 2: be defying X, but I think they're in play for
- 12:02Speaker 2: everybody else. Aaron Glenny is considered one of the top
- 12:07Speaker 2: candidates in this cycle. He's coming from, you know, one
- 12:09Speaker 2: of the most successful organizations in the last few years,
- 12:13Speaker 2: and everyone wants a piece of that in Detroit. Plus
- 12:15Speaker 2: he has all the ties to New Orleans, so I
- 12:18Speaker 2: think he's probably the front runner in my mind. I
- 12:21Speaker 2: think Brian Flores is another one they interviewed last time around.
- 12:26Speaker 2: He's doing an incredible job with that Minnesota defense. I
- 12:30Speaker 2: think he could be in play. I do think Mike
- 12:32Speaker 2: McCarthy and John Gruden are names to to monitor that
- 12:36Speaker 2: that could be in play. And then you know, there's
- 12:41Speaker 2: always there's always some unexpected ones. There's always some young
- 12:45Speaker 2: coordinators that that not everyone thinks about it. I feel
- 12:49Speaker 2: like there was one more name that I was thinking
- 12:50Speaker 2: makes sense. I know Pete Carroll's maybe in the cycle.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I don't know if that had come to fruition. But
- 12:55Speaker 2: the one good thing I think though, is I really
- 12:58Speaker 2: think there's only six or seven highers this time around,
- 13:01Speaker 2: and I think that could benefit the Saints. That's not
- 13:04Speaker 2: one of those years with eleven or twelve openings, So
- 13:07Speaker 2: I do think they will get decent, you know, decent
- 13:11Speaker 2: caliber of choices to choose.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Him, and we're convinced Mickey Loomis will make the higher.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. I Now, the thing I would
- 13:20Speaker 2: like to see is that maybe there are front office
- 13:25Speaker 2: structure changes along with the higher like I would I
- 13:29Speaker 2: would love it if if if he brought in a
- 13:31Speaker 2: Dan Campbell and a Brad Holmes duo that that are
- 13:34Speaker 2: going to work under him in a different type of structure,
- 13:36Speaker 2: and he's going to let them have a different way
- 13:39Speaker 2: of looking at personnel and collaborate together. You know, I
- 13:43Speaker 2: don't think I expect that, but I would like to see.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I want clear acknowledgement from the Saints that, look, he
- 13:50Speaker 2: he did not make a good hire with Tennis Allen,
- 13:52Speaker 2: but that was the higher I would have picked too,
- 13:54Speaker 2: so I can't criticize that. The thinking at the time was, hey,
- 13:57Speaker 2: we've had the best record in the league the last years.
- 14:00Speaker 2: We've won at least seven games nearly twenty years in
- 14:03Speaker 2: a row. We like our culture. We're not looking for
- 14:06Speaker 2: drastic change. I hope this year It shows that they
- 14:10Speaker 2: recognize they need drastic change this time.
