- 0:00Jill Avey: Have you been told to fake it till you make it?
- 0:02To improve your confidence?
- 0:04That hasn't worked for you, has it?
- 0:06That's because for many women leaders, confidence doesn't work that way.
- 0:10Women want to feel confident first from the inside, before
- 0:13they can show it on the outside.
- 0:15So that advice that usually works for men often falls flat for women.
- 0:19So by the end of this episode, you'll have my seven step framework for how
- 0:23to build confidence from a well-rounded perspective so that you feel that
- 0:26confidence comes from the inside so that it's authentic to who you are.
- 0:31I'm Jill Avey, a career success coach, and this is Sister Smart Leadership, the
- 0:36show that explores how women can rise from director to vice president and beyond
- 0:41by fully leaning into their feminine energy as their biggest advantage.
- 0:45Let's get you one step closer to the recognition and promotion you deserve.
- 0:50Jill Avey: So what does confidence affect?
- 0:52It affects whether you speak up in meetings and how you speak up in meetings.
- 0:56It affects how we approach our workload.
- 0:59It affects that we can overwork to want to be proving our worth, that
- 1:04we can procrastinate because this comes from self-doubt often where
- 1:08we're doubting ourselves and so we don't get started on that project.
- 1:11It affects our ability to influence, we can over rely on the team instead
- 1:16of our own original thinking.
- 1:18And it can hold us back from building relationships that we need to be
- 1:22successful in the job we have and the job that we need to move up to the next level.
- 1:27Not having enough confidence can hold us back from building trust
- 1:30with senior leaders and peers.
- 1:32As well as the willingness to put ourselves forward
- 1:34for projects and promotions.
- 1:36So you could see the confidence affects a lot and it's well worth
- 1:40it to be working on our confidence.
- 1:43So the first thing that we want to do when we're building
- 1:45confidence, so step one, would be understanding your zone of brilliance.
- 1:50So what do we count in the zone of brilliance?
- 1:52What makes up our zone of brilliance?
- 1:53So this is, this is this area where we want to be working.
- 1:58So I think of it as our strengths.
- 2:00What is it that you're kind of innately good at, that you bring
- 2:03to whatever situation that you go to, that's our innate strengths.
- 2:08And then there's a secret sauce about you.
- 2:10So what is that secret sauce that you have?
- 2:13What makes it different in the way that you do something versus the
- 2:16way anybody else could do this?
- 2:19Or maybe somebody who's not that great, how do you distinguish from that?
- 2:22Everybody has that special thing about them in the way that they approach
- 2:25something that makes it special and but yet we often don't even acknowledge that.
- 2:29So take a moment to think about that piece.
- 2:32And then also what are the skills that you've learned over the
- 2:34years of your career and what is it that you just know how to do?
- 2:41So that's the first step.
- 2:42The second step is to combat imposter syndrome.
- 2:45If you're doing anything significant in life, you are going to feel some
- 2:48imposter syndrome to go with it.
- 2:50This happens whether you're a man or a woman.
- 2:52It happens to anybody who's pushing the boundaries.
- 2:55No one in their comfort zone feels imposter syndrome.
- 2:58But anybody who's pushing out, who's growing, who's doing something new,
- 3:02taking risks, taking on challenges, you're, you're just gonna feel this.
- 3:05So you really want to work with that imposter.
- 3:08You want to embrace your imposter and say, Hey, I see you.
- 3:12The purpose of the imposter is to keep us safe.
- 3:15Its function is to keep our ego safe.
- 3:17So I always like to appreciate that imposter.
- 3:21Give it a little hug, is what I say.
- 3:22And then, Thank you, but no thank you.
- 3:25I don't need you right now.
- 3:27It is usually my, go-to script for the imposter.
- 3:30The next thing that we can do when you're feeling a lack of confidence is
- 3:34to put more emphasis on co-creation.
- 3:36So if you feel that pressure on your shoulders or stress about something
- 3:41or you're just not feeling it, that's a good signal that you need a team.
- 3:46Whenever I have a client that's feeling a lot of stress about something,
- 3:49especially when that's coupled with anxiety, then that's when I always
- 3:52recommend like, pull a team together.
- 3:54You shouldn't do these things on your own.
- 3:56And things are too high stakes these days.
- 3:59And life's too short to do it all by yourself and have all
- 4:01that on your own shoulders.
- 4:03This is why companies are organized in teams.
- 4:06A lot of companies even have co-CEOs now because they know that that pressure
- 4:11is just too much for one person to bear and it's, you're not getting,
- 4:16you are not, you're not at your best when you have that kind of pressure.
- 4:18But yet we can often be at our best when you have the support system of a team.
- 4:23Next, how learn how to analyze risk.
- 4:26This is really important and confidence because if you're not sure if you
- 4:29should take a risk or not, then it's going to hold you back and you're
- 4:33not going to feel confident about it.
- 4:34But when you are really good at risk analysis and you've got some tools,
- 4:38there's lots of tools out there the first one to go to is your decision tree.
- 4:43If you think, yes, I do this, no, I don't do this, and then think what happens then
- 4:48if it goes well and what happens if it doesn't go well, what happens if it goes
- 4:53well that I didn't do it, and what happens if it doesn't go well that I didn't do it.
- 4:56Just that that simple decision tree will really help you to know if you
- 5:02are assessing something in a full way.
- 5:05You can model it on a spreadsheet, there's very sophisticated
- 5:08models that you can build.
- 5:10There's a lot of different ways that we can do risk analysis.
- 5:14Just getting out and talking to some people and finding out what other
- 5:17people think about the situation can often be very enlightening as well.
- 5:21So when we know that we've really analyzed a risk from from a lot of
- 5:26different viewpoints, you're going to have a lot more confidence to,
- 5:29to go ahead and take that step.
- 5:31Our fifth thing is learning how to bounce back from failure.
- 5:35So you'll have a lot more confidence if you know that even if it doesn't
- 5:39go well, I'll still be okay.
- 5:42And that's what a lot of people will need just to be able to take a step forward,
- 5:46is to know that, hey, I can bounce back.
- 5:49I'm resilient.
- 5:50I have lots of skills.
- 5:51I'm very talented.
- 5:52I have the network.
- 5:54I have the support system at home.
- 5:56Whatever it is that you have that helps you be resilient, that's can be a very
- 6:01good piece of building that confidence.
- 6:03And it's important to remember that confidence is built
- 6:06over many small moments.
- 6:08It's not just one big thing that you did and now you're
- 6:10gonna have confidence forever.
- 6:12It doesn't work that way.
- 6:13We have to continually be pushing ourselves.
- 6:16And so it is good to develop that resilience if you don't feel like you're
- 6:20resilient enough right now, take a look and see, where do I need to build
- 6:24on that and what can I do so that I can start taking more small risks and
- 6:29start building that confidence up.
- 6:32So number six is grounding yourself in your why.
- 6:35So your why is kind of made famous by Simon Sinek.
- 6:39That's a really important thing to know.
- 6:42So having a why, really understanding why is it that you
- 6:47get up out of bed in the morning?
- 6:48Why is it that it's important that you do the work you do?
- 6:52Why is it that you want to provide?
- 6:54Why is it that what you do is important in society?
- 6:58Why is it important to your team, to your company?
- 7:00Really tapping into all of these reasons why you do what
- 7:05you do can really help you.
- 7:07I can tell you that that gets me out of bed a lot and it gets me to do things,
- 7:11even like creating this video, to really remember who I'm doing it for.
- 7:16And then I really want to help leaders out there be the best they can be.
- 7:19And that's super motivating for me.
- 7:21It gets me to push my edges all the time.
- 7:24And then finally number seven is build a supportive group
- 7:27of fans that you can lean on.
- 7:30Everybody needs their super fans and so, when you feel the fear of whatever
- 7:36it is you want to attempt, that's significant, there's gonna be fear
- 7:39If you're doing something that, that takes courage, that takes, pushing your
- 7:43edges, that is always gonna be there.
- 7:46And so it's great to be able to lean on those people that just love everything
- 7:52you do and think you're the greatest.
- 7:54So this could be your dog.
- 7:56My dog is definitely one of my biggest supporters.
- 8:00She thinks I am amazing, and I think about that sometimes.
- 8:03If I could just be the person that she thinks I am, it would be great.
- 8:08I also have a mentor that, that is a huge supporter of mine.
- 8:12My husband is a huge supporter of mine.
- 8:14My mom is.
- 8:15I've got those people around that I can stop and think about them and what
- 8:19they think of me before I start to act.
- 8:23These shifts are how you can really start to push yourself out there to
- 8:28take more risk to, do things that might feel scary and really do something that
- 8:35wouldn't have been you in the past.
- 8:37One of my clients is running an organization that's about 20 to 30 people,
- 8:42depending on the, the time of year.
- 8:45And this is an organization that has five partners.
- 8:48When she was kind of put in charge of everything, her confidence needed to
- 8:52grow for her to grow into that role.
- 8:55And as we do, whenever you get promoted, you have to grow
- 8:58into that role internally.
- 9:00So it's one thing that somebody tells you, you are now this new thing.
- 9:05You have to mentally promote yourself within as well.
- 9:09And so she went through this process and, that imposter syndrome first came
- 9:13up of like, who am I to do all of this?
- 9:15And who am I to take charge?
- 9:18How do I just start telling everybody what to do and start making decisions?
- 9:22Because she wanted to, really kind of lean back and have the team do that more.
- 9:26But she knew she needed to step up to lead and guide as,
- 9:30as the company needed her to.
- 9:32And so what she did was really go back to what her strengths are, that zone
- 9:36of brilliance piece and she made some big, bold changes with the company
- 9:41and that's really helped the company grow and be so much more stable.
- 9:45The employees are happier, but before she made those changes, she
- 9:49had to think through like, okay, what is the risk involved in here?
- 9:53And what happens if it doesn't work?
- 9:55How can I bounce back from that?
- 9:56What kind of support system do I have?
- 9:59How do I prepare people for the risk that we're taking?
- 10:03And so that really helped her to get everybody on board and
- 10:05get everybody's buy-in, that we're gonna make these changes.
- 10:09There is some risk involved in it, but we're going to do that with
- 10:12open eyes and we're going to do that because we see a better future.
- 10:16That's really panned out for her because the company's just running so
- 10:19much better and all of the partners acknowledge that she's really
- 10:22been the one who's changed things.
- 10:24And so that's a really good feeling for her as well, which, continually
- 10:28builds on that confidence.
- 10:29She's also in that process, really defined for herself and helped the staff too,
- 10:36to really stop and buy into that vision on a daily basis of what it is they're
- 10:42doing and why they're here doing it.
- 10:44Thinking about the mission, the vision, and the values that they all bring to
- 10:49the company, and then the, those mission, vision values of the company itself too,
- 10:53so that they can all stay, tied into that.
- 10:57And so let me remind you that everyone feels fear when they're
- 11:00doing something significant.
- 11:02It's what we do with that fear that defines our confidence.
- 11:06So I want to leave you with three shifts.
- 11:08What I first would like for you to do is to ask five people what
- 11:12they see in you that will help you define your zone of brilliance.
- 11:16I would also encourage you to do the Zone of brilliance exercise that's
- 11:20linked below in the show notes for you.
- 11:23This exercise is going to support you by helping you boil
- 11:25down where your strengths lie.
- 11:27So the first shift was to ask people what are five things about you that they
- 11:31see, and then this exercise will help you to really fill out that full picture of
- 11:35what your zone of brilliance is, and so that will help improve your confidence
- 11:39and it'll also help you communicate your viewpoints more clearly because you'll
- 11:43know where it is that you're coming from.
- 11:45And then I would like you to learn how to use a decision tree.
- 11:48I'll put a link to a good tutorial here and you can see
- 11:52what a decision tree looks like.
- 11:54And then learn how to use that to be making your decisions
- 11:57and assessing your risk.
- 11:58And then find your why.
- 12:00I'll put a link to Simon Sinek's amazing Ted Talk, that that
- 12:04is what put him on the map.
- 12:06It's a really easy way to, to determine why it is that you do what you do.
- 12:10So what is one thing that you could do to bolster your confidence?
- 12:14I would love to hear in the comments if you're watching this on YouTube.
