- 0:52Speaker 1: on to talk about the presentation night that's coming up tomorrow.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Will we have time for any other sport? We'll we
- 1:03Speaker 1: just have to wait and see whon't we But don't worry.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I'll be back on Saturday with a d between ten
- 1:09Speaker 1: and eleven. Then we can catch up then. So let's
- 1:13Speaker 1: get this show on the road. You know, I'd like
- 1:15Speaker 1: to start with the belter of a track, and I'm
- 1:18Speaker 1: going to tell you about this little song after we
- 1:20Speaker 1: played it, So sit back and listen to this one
- 1:23Speaker 1: from Elo Hold on Tight. All right, that was Elo there,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and I must tell you that I have seen Elo.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I've seen them the correct Ello if you like the two.
- 2:01Speaker 1: And the other night there was an Elo tribute band
- 2:06Speaker 1: called the Elo Experience and we went to watch them
- 2:09Speaker 1: at the Leecliff Hall the other night and honestly, you
- 2:12Speaker 1: could not tell the difference. They These tribute bands are
- 2:15Speaker 1: so good nowadays. But yeah, so if you get a
- 2:18Speaker 1: chance to go and see the Elo Experience, then take it.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:23Speaker 1: That's enough of that, So we're going to talk about
- 2:25Speaker 1: sport now. And now I'm joined by a regular to
- 2:28Speaker 1: the show, but today she has a cricket on. Good
- 2:31Speaker 1: to see you, Sarah Green.
- 2:32Speaker 2: How are you?
- 2:33Speaker 3: I'm very well, Thank you, Kevin.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks for coming in, and Sarah, you're normally here
- 2:37Speaker 1: telling us about the fantastic work you do with the
- 2:39Speaker 1: schools in Chapway with the Sports Trust. But I've only
- 2:42Speaker 1: just discovered that you're a member of the Folks and
- 2:44Speaker 1: Women's cricket team. Now, when and how did that start?
- 2:48Speaker 4: Well, it wasn't that long ago, actually, Kevin I got involved.
- 2:52Speaker 4: It was probably only in July, so I've only been
- 2:56Speaker 4: involved a few months. But I think that really is
- 2:59Speaker 4: testament to how welcoming the atmosphere is with the ladies
- 3:03Speaker 4: there that I've felt part of the team for a
- 3:07Speaker 4: long time and we've achieved so much.
- 3:10Speaker 5: I heard about it just through.
- 3:11Speaker 4: A friend and it's it's it's a little bit of
- 3:15Speaker 4: distance for me to travel, but the sessions have been
- 3:18Speaker 4: so worth it. I was asking the ladies last night
- 3:22Speaker 4: on the old WhatsApp group how they find the sessions,
- 3:27Speaker 4: and the words supportive and friendly atmosphere came up so much.
- 3:32Speaker 4: I think for us the group, how welcoming they are
- 3:35Speaker 4: really makes it makes it really accessible and open to us,
- 3:39Speaker 4: or we might not have played while we were younger,
- 3:42Speaker 4: and it's it's a great environment just to go along
- 3:44Speaker 4: and try something you've you've never tried before, and not
- 3:46Speaker 4: worry about making mistakes or bowling like you're throwing a grenade.
- 3:51Speaker 5: We just have a giggle, which yea.
- 3:54Speaker 4: If any other ladies are listening, good afternoon to you all, guys.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Now you say you've only just been playing. By how
- 4:00Speaker 1: long was the women's section be going do you know that?
- 4:02Speaker 1: Or is it a brand new Okay.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Not very long as far as I'm aware.
- 4:06Speaker 1: No, Okay, maytime right, so it's still new then, So yeah, yeah,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you're a bit of a veteran then really aren't you
- 4:16Speaker 1: my few months?
- 4:17Speaker 4: Yeah, we've achieved so much so in that time.
- 4:19Speaker 1: So what made you? I mean, you obviously do a
- 4:21Speaker 1: lot of work in schools and perhaps there might be
- 4:23Speaker 1: a bit of girls cricket in schools, But what attracted
- 4:25Speaker 1: you to it? Is it because you've seen it on
- 4:27Speaker 1: the TV and you think the game is getting more
- 4:29Speaker 1: popular and you thought, do you know what, I will
- 4:31Speaker 1: never go this?
- 4:32Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what.
- 4:33Speaker 4: It's something I've wanted to have a go out for
- 4:36Speaker 4: me personally for a long time. But I have memories
- 4:39Speaker 4: of my parents watching cricket days on end, and to
- 4:42Speaker 4: be quite honest, I thought it was completely boring.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 4: As I've got into work with schools, especially with the
- 4:49Speaker 4: pairs format, was so inclusive and accessible to all I
- 4:53Speaker 4: found it's actually a really exciting game where there's so
- 4:55Speaker 4: many elements you can take and improve on each time
- 4:58Speaker 4: you play, and the inclusive nature of it just means
- 5:01Speaker 4: everyone gets involved. And through that, my son started playing
- 5:06Speaker 4: cricket this summer, and as you do working in sport,
- 5:10Speaker 4: I ended up umpiring his game. So then I got
- 5:13Speaker 4: to know the pairs format even more so that gave
- 5:16Speaker 4: me a bit of confidence to come and try out,
- 5:19Speaker 4: and it's it's worked out really well so far with
- 5:23Speaker 4: the women.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I understand that you had a tournament as well recently.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Tell us about that.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah, so so in August we actually went to a
- 5:32Speaker 4: festival at Mersham Cricket Ground. We were we had three
- 5:37Speaker 4: teams out of the twelve that were there, so we
- 5:39Speaker 4: had we had a big presence and we actually did
- 5:42Speaker 4: quite well.
- 5:43Speaker 3: We are out of twelve.
- 5:45Speaker 4: We thought they've forgotten to read our name list out,
- 5:49Speaker 4: but we actually came first, second and fourth, and we
- 5:52Speaker 4: we thought, hang on a minute, this is something that
- 5:55Speaker 4: we've really really enjoyed and we could do. You know,
- 5:59Speaker 4: we're around twenty five with them all very capable human beings,
- 6:04Speaker 4: lots of different strengths, and we thought we could do this.
- 6:08Speaker 4: So we got in touch with Kent Cricket and had
- 6:12Speaker 4: a few sort of tips and pointers and a format
- 6:15Speaker 4: of the softball version of the game, and yeah, we
- 6:19Speaker 4: come September. We stretched out the summer as much as
- 6:23Speaker 4: we could and we had twelve sorry, we had nine
- 6:27Speaker 4: teams come and compete, actually representing seven different clubs. So yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 4: we organized them in pools of three. It took part
- 6:35Speaker 4: of the three hills. We had the barbecue go and
- 6:38Speaker 4: we had a few bubbles here and there. We had
- 6:40Speaker 4: a festival shark mascot which I had to pay my
- 6:44Speaker 4: daughter a fiver to wear, but she usually did it.
- 6:46Speaker 4: And it was just great fun, great atmosphere and it's
- 6:50Speaker 4: something that we'd really like to continue into next summer.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Right, So where did the rest of the team come from.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Mums that a prepzoy bought their children up were watching cricket,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and certainly back in the day when I used to
- 7:01Speaker 1: watch cricket or it was on the telly, it was
- 7:03Speaker 1: five days and it was yours. But there's so much
- 7:06Speaker 1: more exciting, isn't it.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Yeah, we're a real mixture.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I think some have got pairents, some children who play
- 7:13Speaker 4: and they've kind of sat on the side and thought
- 7:15Speaker 4: they never have the confidence to do it, But here
- 7:17Speaker 4: they are now having a go. I think some are
- 7:21Speaker 4: looking to kind of be more active. We're various states
- 7:25Speaker 4: of fitness and so we had we were a sort
- 7:29Speaker 4: of finely tuned athletes by any means, but we were
- 7:33Speaker 4: all support each other and it doesn't really matter what size, shape, color,
- 7:37Speaker 4: any you.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Are at all.
- 7:39Speaker 4: We've all supported each other and yeah, we're a real mixture.
- 7:43Speaker 1: All right. So really, this group, it's not like when
- 7:46Speaker 1: you're a youth player, you play under eight tens, twelves,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you get to know who bond with each other. You're
- 7:51Speaker 1: all relatively strangers, aren't you.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Absolutely, Yeah, we've only really met on the cricket pitch.
- 7:57Speaker 4: I think we probably know our children teammates more than
- 8:00Speaker 4: when we do ours. But I think that's that's also
- 8:03Speaker 4: the lightness of it is what makes it so so
- 8:06Speaker 4: great because you can you can dip in and out
- 8:08Speaker 4: as you want, and there's no hard feelings, there's no
- 8:12Speaker 4: kind of you must be there for training at this time.
- 8:14Speaker 4: If you roll up late, that's okay. We're really easy
- 8:17Speaker 4: going group and I think we really appreciate that with
- 8:20Speaker 4: you know, we're busy lifestyles, working or working mums or
- 8:24Speaker 4: or just mums, and it it's just something that we
- 8:27Speaker 4: can carve out a bit of our own time for us,
- 8:31Speaker 4: which is really really special and really important.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I think, And do you do you actually just I
- 8:36Speaker 1: know you've got these tournaments, but do you have like
- 8:39Speaker 1: once a week you have a lot of training, So in.
- 8:42Speaker 4: The summer we we do train once a week. We
- 8:45Speaker 4: started doing some nets practice as well, so some extra
- 8:49Speaker 4: practice at Three Hills, And in the winter we're looking
- 8:53Speaker 4: to go indoors to continue that those nets and then
- 8:57Speaker 4: we will come out back.
- 8:59Speaker 5: In the summer.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Right, so there might be a possibility of entering the league,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you know, a little bit more competitive.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I mean I think there's enough of us
- 9:08Speaker 4: that have different motivations. I absolutely think we are capable
- 9:13Speaker 4: of putting together a team to enter a league. I
- 9:15Speaker 4: don't think that's everybody's bug necessarily. So I'd love to
- 9:19Speaker 4: see a future where you kind of still have the
- 9:22Speaker 4: social sessions that we've had this year, and we're welcoming
- 9:26Speaker 4: new people in constantly, and then it becomes kind of
- 9:30Speaker 4: a foundation of women and then if you want to
- 9:33Speaker 4: go into a league pathway, then we would have a
- 9:35Speaker 4: league team. And if you just wanted to carry on
- 9:38Speaker 4: the social dip in and out, throw a few balls
- 9:40Speaker 4: down the nets and then have a drink afterwards.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And that's actually because you don't lose touch with with
- 9:45Speaker 1: you know, if you start a team to go in
- 9:47Speaker 1: the league, some of the moms might go, no, don't
- 9:49Speaker 1: want to go. But if you keep that sort of
- 9:51Speaker 1: social side together. That's that's great for the team spirit,
- 9:53Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Absolutely?
- 9:54Speaker 4: And I'm sure I'm not the only one when I
- 9:56Speaker 4: say I am a personal assistant to my children over
- 9:58Speaker 4: the weekend.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, well exactly it will probably be on
- 10:02Speaker 1: a Sunday aspect, and that there's always someone to run
- 10:06Speaker 1: around somewhere, or isn't there absolutely? Yeah? All right, okay,
- 10:10Speaker 1: So I mean getting back to the if you like
- 10:12Speaker 1: the nitty gritty of the game, as you play the
- 10:15Speaker 1: hardball or softball.
- 10:17Speaker 4: So we play a softball version of the game, which
- 10:19Speaker 4: again is a massive plus for us because we can
- 10:22Speaker 4: just turn up with a pair of trainers.
- 10:27Speaker 5: We don't use no, no, I.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Mean we have got a couple of russ from the
- 10:32Speaker 4: ball but they're not too bad. We yeah, we say,
- 10:36Speaker 4: I think that's one of the good things as well.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Can just turn up.
- 10:38Speaker 4: I'm me, I know nothing about cricket, or I know
- 10:40Speaker 4: a little bit or I know a lot, really doesn't matter.
- 10:44Speaker 4: The guys are so supportive you can fit in at
- 10:47Speaker 4: whatever level. And those are a bit more knowledgeable do
- 10:52Speaker 4: tend to help out the women who are new to
- 10:56Speaker 4: the sport, which is really helpful when like me, you
- 11:00Speaker 4: don't know what you're doing at the beginning, or like me,
- 11:03Speaker 4: you knew the rules but how to do it.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Or if the captain says, go to silly middle on
- 11:07Speaker 1: or something you got and before before we go Sarah,
- 11:14Speaker 1: And what is your what are your family? What do
- 11:16Speaker 1: your children think about you? Especially your boy that plays cricket. Yeah,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you like it, like the idea.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Yeah, they're really encouraging of it. I think they're happy
- 11:23Speaker 4: to spend as much time outside as possible. So I
- 11:27Speaker 4: think where we created our tournament and we had the
- 11:31Speaker 4: lovely welcoming atmosphere not just rapped our team but all
- 11:33Speaker 4: the other teams. My daughter actually had to go during
- 11:37Speaker 4: the during the tournament, which I never she never expressed
- 11:41Speaker 4: any interest in it.
- 11:43Speaker 5: She had to go and it was.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Just lovely to know that we'd created that atmosphere where
- 11:49Speaker 4: people can just have the confidence coming up and if
- 11:51Speaker 4: they make a mistake, so.
- 11:53Speaker 1: You can sit around at home if there's lady's cricket
- 11:55Speaker 1: on there and all sit around the telly and watch
- 11:57Speaker 1: it altogether. Yeah, No, we do.
- 11:58Speaker 2: We do.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Did actually attend one hundred games this season, which was
- 12:04Speaker 4: great to see the kind of equality for the men's
- 12:06Speaker 4: and women's game, with the fixtures being on the same day.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I do pop up to Canterbury to watch the T
- 12:12Speaker 4: twenty and there's quite often an international T twenty game
- 12:16Speaker 4: with the England women each summer.
- 12:18Speaker 5: So I'm pretty sure New Zealand.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Are coming baut this year. I've got my tickets ready
- 12:22Speaker 4: for that, great, great stuff.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Okay, So what would you say to someone that was
- 12:27Speaker 1: one of the ladies that might be listening to this
- 12:30Speaker 1: now and she's sort of sitting on the fence. Should
- 12:31Speaker 1: I go? What would you say to her?
- 12:33Speaker 4: I think, just come along and just give it a go.
- 12:37Speaker 4: There's nothing to lose. Nobody's going to think anything.
- 12:43Speaker 6: In a view.
- 12:43Speaker 5: If you cannot bowl, give it.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Some of us still can't. So it's just it's more
- 12:50Speaker 4: than the cricket. It's come along, have fun and do something.
- 12:53Speaker 1: It's good for your health to Okay, Sarah, thanks you
- 12:56Speaker 1: so much for coming in. And it's been great to
- 12:59Speaker 1: know that the women's game is out there in our
- 13:01Speaker 1: town in fact, because sometimes it's the big towns that
- 13:04Speaker 1: get all the all the pickens, isn't it. It's nice
- 13:06Speaker 1: to know that a club and we're going to find
- 13:08Speaker 1: out a little bit more about inclusivity a bit later on, hopefully.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So thank you so much, and hopefully next time we
- 13:14Speaker 1: see you can come in with your sports trust and
- 13:17Speaker 1: tell us all about the riots and things that are
- 13:19Speaker 1: going on at the schools. Okay, right, so we're going
- 13:22Speaker 1: to crack on. We've got lots to get through. And
- 13:23Speaker 1: this is a track from a group called you might
- 13:27Speaker 1: remember this one. It's one word, it's unbelievable.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Questions You're unbelievable, and it's funny how and it's funny
- 13:56Speaker 2: how one song, one word can stick in your mind.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Is just like you'll all be going run around the
- 14:01Speaker 1: office now and around the kitchen going unbelievable.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Okay, So now I'm joined now by Will Tie. Welcome
- 14:09Speaker 1: to the show.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Will.
- 14:09Speaker 1: How are you I doing?
- 14:10Speaker 2: Well? Thanks?
- 14:11Speaker 1: Good, excellent. Now you've got what sounds like a very
- 14:15Speaker 1: dangerous job. Actually you're involved in the junior and the
- 14:17Speaker 1: girls section. So let's talk about the juniors. First of all,
- 14:21Speaker 1: how many teams are that sort of thing just to
- 14:23Speaker 1: just to go for it?
- 14:24Speaker 5: Yeah, certainly so. I mean the junior section of Folkson
- 14:27Speaker 5: is long established, and we have multiple teams that all
- 14:31Speaker 5: the age groups ranging for underlines right through to under fifteens.
- 14:35Speaker 5: It's a really vibrant punch as you like dangerous heard
- 14:39Speaker 5: them all. But myself and Matt's look after the under elevens,
- 14:43Speaker 5: and myself and Dan looking after the girls team as well.
- 14:45Speaker 5: So it's a really nice experience to look after the
- 14:49Speaker 5: kids and see them grow and thrive. But it's been
- 14:52Speaker 5: a great.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Experience, all right. And have you got children involved with cricket?
- 14:55Speaker 1: What sort of drags you into getting getting this job?
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 14:58Speaker 5: So, I mean I played a bit as as a
- 15:00Speaker 5: child and in my like through about two of my twenties,
- 15:04Speaker 5: and then sort of family came in and work came
- 15:05Speaker 5: and then with my own two children, it was a
- 15:08Speaker 5: chance to kick back in again and live vicariously through them.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And yeah, it's two boys, is he boy and Henry?
- 15:16Speaker 1: And they both play both play.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Yes, their names Alana and Henry.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Well, hello Lana and Henry. Big shout out from your dad. There.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I hope you're listening. Oh you're at school, but you
- 15:24Speaker 1: might be able to listen to the recording. I was
- 15:26Speaker 1: sudden they both play. That's cood.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Yeah again, it's one of the great things that happens
- 15:29Speaker 5: at the club. Not only do we have the junior sections,
- 15:32Speaker 5: we run the Dynamos and All Stars programs, which is
- 15:35Speaker 5: a really good entry to especially the younger children to
- 15:38Speaker 5: get into cricket for the first time. And both of
- 15:40Speaker 5: them went through through those respectively, and then you just
- 15:44Speaker 5: roll into the age groups and it's been really nice
- 15:46Speaker 5: for them.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Right, So what are the age groups again?
- 15:48Speaker 5: So under nines right through to under fifteens fifteen. Again
- 15:52Speaker 5: we've got clubs teams in multiple teams at each level.
- 15:55Speaker 1: So right, so when when when they hit the fifteen
- 15:59Speaker 1: I mean, if they're looking outstanding, they can go into
- 16:02Speaker 1: like the senior sides.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Absolutely, absolutely, yeah, and we're quite lucky again that we've
- 16:05Speaker 5: got five senior teams with the fifths being much of
- 16:09Speaker 5: a development squad, so anyone who wants to carry on
- 16:12Speaker 5: gets the opportunities, and some not even waiting to get
- 16:15Speaker 5: to fifteen's you know, if they're young enough, Yeah, then
- 16:19Speaker 5: they get the chance to carry on.
- 16:20Speaker 1: So okay, So I mean the juniors, let's get back
- 16:23Speaker 1: to basics. How many in a junior team if they've
- 16:26Speaker 1: got to play an opposition, how many in the team.
- 16:28Speaker 5: So for the age groups, that I'm with the under
- 16:29Speaker 5: levels were I'm we have eight per side and we
- 16:31Speaker 5: have a pairs game and they can The benefit for
- 16:35Speaker 5: that is they multiple dismissal, so if they lose their wicket,
- 16:38Speaker 5: the day's not over for them. They carry on until
- 16:40Speaker 5: their pair has finished. The amount of overs, oh I see,
- 16:43Speaker 5: just encourages them.
- 16:44Speaker 1: To okay, And it is the actual pitch not is
- 16:46Speaker 1: it not twenty two yards?
- 16:48Speaker 2: Is it? No?
- 16:48Speaker 5: So we play off seventeen's seventeen yards and then the
- 16:51Speaker 5: under thirteenth jump up to nineteen yea, and we have
- 16:54Speaker 5: obviously bring in the boundary a little bit, so we
- 16:56Speaker 5: still have yar and sixers from that time.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And when will that genuinely be played local Sunday?
- 17:00Speaker 5: Yeah, so early on a Sunday generally. We also have
- 17:04Speaker 5: in the season just gone the Ashford Leaue played on
- 17:06Speaker 5: a Monday night, so yeah, bit of evening.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Ah right, Yeah, So you just mentioned the Sex and
- 17:10Speaker 1: Shore League. Now I ever heard of it, but I
- 17:13Speaker 1: don't know much about it. Tell me about that. What
- 17:15Speaker 1: area Sex and Shaw sounds like at Whitstable Way?
- 17:18Speaker 5: Yeah, so, I mean it covers all of the local
- 17:20Speaker 5: area folks, and we have teams like Saint Margaret's and
- 17:23Speaker 5: Dlvick's and Sipton Park and all these local clubs. But
- 17:26Speaker 5: the real great thing about Saxon Shore League it is
- 17:29Speaker 5: presented as a development league, so it doesn't matter if
- 17:33Speaker 5: you've never played the game before or you've never played
- 17:35Speaker 5: hardball before and you're keen. It's at a level that
- 17:38Speaker 5: you can get started into. So it's a really good
- 17:41Speaker 5: entry level for that, right.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And do you find that? I mean, the children start
- 17:45Speaker 1: young and they're all enthusiastic, but do you get them
- 17:48Speaker 1: any light dropouts as you as you as you creep up?
- 17:51Speaker 1: I mean certainly when it comes to like fifteen or
- 17:53Speaker 1: sixteen as girlfriends and boyfriends getting away. But you know,
- 17:56Speaker 1: do people have you always got a lot of players,
- 17:59Speaker 1: new players coming.
- 17:59Speaker 5: From Yeah, I think we do get people turning up
- 18:02Speaker 5: throughout the age groups. But you are right, there is
- 18:04Speaker 5: there's always a drop off as well as people's experiences
- 18:07Speaker 5: change or their lives change and they want to do
- 18:09Speaker 5: something else. So I'm an example of that. I got
- 18:11Speaker 5: to about fifteen sixteen, then took a long break till
- 18:14Speaker 5: I was twenty, So it's it does happen, But we
- 18:18Speaker 5: do get people coming in all the time, which is great, right.
- 18:20Speaker 3: So.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Tell us about tournaments and stuff like that. I mean
- 18:25Speaker 1: it seems like you've gotten into a club sessions. If
- 18:29Speaker 1: you like that, you could play against other clubs, but
- 18:32Speaker 1: you'll do you get together a lot like the women
- 18:34Speaker 1: do another tournament so one day.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Yeah, so it depends on the edge. We've focus on
- 18:38Speaker 5: the league primarily for the under elevens, but in say
- 18:41Speaker 5: the under nine setup, we also do these softball tournaments
- 18:45Speaker 5: that come around and that's a really great day out
- 18:47Speaker 5: actually for the undernines. They all get together for a
- 18:50Speaker 5: whole day. They play lots of short games, yeah, fire games,
- 18:53Speaker 5: so they keep their interesting it.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a nice day. Oh great, okay, So moving on,
- 19:01Speaker 1: unless there's anything else you want to talk about the
- 19:03Speaker 1: juniors that you want to add.
- 19:04Speaker 5: No, just to reiterate that the leagues that we have,
- 19:07Speaker 5: the Section Show is a great entry league. We also
- 19:09Speaker 5: take part in the canterbur League and the Ashvid League
- 19:11Speaker 5: where the skill is a bit higher. So I think
- 19:14Speaker 5: we're the only club actually that enters into all three.
- 19:17Speaker 5: So we really do offer everything for any young player
- 19:19Speaker 5: that wants to come to play.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Right. Excellent, Okay, So moving on to the girls team.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Has that been going along or was that a new
- 19:25Speaker 1: adventure relatively new.
- 19:27Speaker 5: It's only it's third season, just completed, another creation from
- 19:32Speaker 5: Malcolm to get the girls section up and running, and
- 19:35Speaker 5: important I think for her to mention Heather that was
- 19:37Speaker 5: with us in the opening couple of seasons really kicked
- 19:39Speaker 5: it on and really got the interest going. And this
- 19:43Speaker 5: core group of girls that we've got now really thanks
- 19:45Speaker 5: to a lot of effort put through from there.
- 19:48Speaker 1: So where do they come from? I mean, is it
- 19:49Speaker 1: just word of mouth or is there any schools contact?
- 19:52Speaker 1: I mean these days certain sports that we used to
- 19:55Speaker 1: play at school they're not played anymore. I mean it
- 19:57Speaker 1: was talking to Amy from the hockey club and she
- 20:02Speaker 1: said hockey is not played in schools. There's a I
- 20:04Speaker 1: don't think there's nipball played in schools.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Now.
- 20:07Speaker 5: Yeah, again, it is difficult, especially cricket is a game
- 20:11Speaker 5: we need plenty of space, and not that schools have
- 20:13Speaker 5: got the facilities to do it. But we have been
- 20:15Speaker 5: fortunate enough to go to things like Folks in School
- 20:17Speaker 5: for girls and bring some players out of that. And
- 20:20Speaker 5: again it depends on everyone's path is slightly different. So again,
- 20:24Speaker 5: my daughter went through the beginning dynamos and found our
- 20:27Speaker 5: way that way. Others we pick up from the schools,
- 20:30Speaker 5: and a lot of it that comes from my friend
- 20:32Speaker 5: is playing and they try and bring all There's lots
- 20:36Speaker 5: of friendship groups that turn up together.
- 20:38Speaker 1: And are they more responsive than the boys? You think
- 20:42Speaker 1: or it's a bit of a tough question in that one.
- 20:45Speaker 5: Yeah, it can be tricky, Yeah, especially as and the
- 20:49Speaker 5: different age groups as well makes it makes it interesting.
- 20:52Speaker 5: But they're a great bunch.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah. I do remember once watching I've told this story
- 20:56Speaker 1: a few times on here, but are watching them. There
- 20:58Speaker 1: was in Victor, girls were playing and the trainer said,
- 21:03Speaker 1: to right, you lot go over there and do five
- 21:05Speaker 1: minutes of handstands. So they went, I did handstands, And
- 21:08Speaker 1: when it had all finished, I said, why did you
- 21:10Speaker 1: send them off to do handstands? He said, because every
- 21:13Speaker 1: time I turn around and tell them to do something,
- 21:15Speaker 1: I look around and they're doing handstands. So I thought
- 21:17Speaker 1: I'll give them five minutes of handstands and get it
- 21:19Speaker 1: out of this system. I mean, so the girls, so
- 21:25Speaker 1: do they play the same rules as the boys?
- 21:26Speaker 2: Like?
- 21:27Speaker 1: Is it seven sign short.
- 21:30Speaker 5: Almost exactly the same? Where it is exactly the same.
- 21:33Speaker 5: It's the same pairs format, so multiple dismissals and eight
- 21:36Speaker 5: a side. Everyone gets a fair turn to do as
- 21:38Speaker 5: much cricket on the day as they can.
- 21:41Speaker 1: And how's the age range with the girls? How many
- 21:44Speaker 1: teams have you got with the girls?
- 21:45Speaker 5: So much newer in set up as the dedicated girls section.
- 21:48Speaker 5: So we've currently just this season only went with the
- 21:50Speaker 5: under thirteens, but we've had under elevens. Obviously, the group
- 21:55Speaker 5: are moving through the age groups and I'm hoping to
- 21:56Speaker 5: bring some new players in for the next season, but
- 21:59Speaker 5: ideally we were have an under elevens under thirteen's again
- 22:01Speaker 5: next year. Any success, we're a junior side, I would
- 22:06Speaker 5: say in the league, so there's a couple of junior
- 22:08Speaker 5: size like us and then a couple of very well
- 22:10Speaker 5: established so the results can be one or the other,
- 22:14Speaker 5: tend Yeah, but I think the important thing is that
- 22:16Speaker 5: everyone gets the experience to grow into the game and
- 22:18Speaker 5: have a real good chance.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think we were asking off here. I mean,
- 22:22Speaker 1: if you've got any promising young girls at what age,
- 22:26Speaker 1: did you know how old they've got to be before
- 22:28Speaker 1: they go into playing I don't know, Ladies senior quick here.
- 22:31Speaker 5: Yeah, again obviously comes a lot down to skill and ability,
- 22:35Speaker 5: but as long as you're twelve or over then you
- 22:37Speaker 5: can already start to move ahead. So again it's much
- 22:41Speaker 5: like the junior section. There are opportunities but all skill
- 22:44Speaker 5: levels to find their way through the game.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Brilliant. And what about sort of training. I mean it
- 22:50Speaker 1: must be jumping at the bit for space on training nights,
- 22:53Speaker 1: you must be all like sort of fighting over the
- 22:57Speaker 1: times bound. How does that go?
- 23:00Speaker 5: I mean we're quite fortunate at Three Hills. We've got
- 23:01Speaker 5: two large pitches and we all sort of section off
- 23:04Speaker 5: into various areas, and then we have the nets as well,
- 23:07Speaker 5: so I think between thirteen's down to nines and the
- 23:11Speaker 5: girls and now the ladies all playing on the same night.
- 23:15Speaker 5: But that does really add to the community feel of
- 23:18Speaker 5: how it is on a Friday, as it was this season.
- 23:21Speaker 5: But yeah, so we can't out our little area and
- 23:23Speaker 5: try not to be anybody else, yeah, and just try
- 23:26Speaker 5: and keep everyone happy.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Really yeah, I mean the facilities, well, the facilities have
- 23:32Speaker 1: made clubs grow. It's like the hockey club's grown, the
- 23:35Speaker 1: cricket club's grown, you know, the athletic club. They've all
- 23:37Speaker 1: grown since they've had three hills, So it's a tribute
- 23:40Speaker 1: to the building itself and the fact you've got the
- 23:41Speaker 1: facilities and possibly, as you say, you've got two pitches,
- 23:45Speaker 1: so if you want to put on a tournament, you
- 23:46Speaker 1: know you're not worried about thot bumping into each other.
- 23:51Speaker 1: So I don't know anything else to add about the girls,
- 23:54Speaker 1: I mean the parents. If you've got to get to
- 23:56Speaker 1: other games, they all have to muck in and yeah
- 23:59Speaker 1: do on the car.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Again, the parents are great. Obviously, they play such a
- 24:03Speaker 5: big role in getting the players to the to the
- 24:06Speaker 5: to the venues, and they're very enthusiastic helping out every
- 24:10Speaker 5: game is you know, get the flags out, get the
- 24:12Speaker 5: stumps out, and everyone's willing to muck in and tapeart,
- 24:14Speaker 5: which is which is excellent. And again I think we've
- 24:17Speaker 5: we've mentioned it a little bit already, but the key
- 24:20Speaker 5: thing for us will be now to grow that section
- 24:21Speaker 5: even more and try and encourage new players. So if
- 24:24Speaker 5: anyone out there has girls or girls listening that want
- 24:27Speaker 5: to come along, yeah do get in touch. We've we've
- 24:29Speaker 5: got the website. You can come along and check it out.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Our training indoor will start again in January. Really great
- 24:35Speaker 5: to see some of your faces.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Great, right, thank you so much, Will, And it's been
- 24:39Speaker 1: a good introduction to me anyway about what goes on
- 24:43Speaker 1: for the juniors, because I love hearing the fact that
- 24:45Speaker 1: these clubs have got junior sides, any club, you know,
- 24:48Speaker 1: because it's so important that anyone you want to hang
- 24:52Speaker 1: on to them. All right, they get some of them,
- 24:53Speaker 1: as you say, are going to drift away, but it'd
- 24:55Speaker 1: be great to keep the hardcore of youngsters growing up
- 24:58Speaker 1: into seniors and all playing together. All right, anything else
- 25:01Speaker 1: is well before.
- 25:02Speaker 5: You go, no, I think that's great. Thanks for us.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Okay, right, okay, well, thank you Will for coming in.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Just say there a sec because we are coming up next.
- 25:11Speaker 1: We've got Malcolm. We're going to play some bit of
- 25:13Speaker 1: music and then we're going to get Malcolm on and
- 25:15Speaker 1: he's going to talk about walking cricket and disability cricket
- 25:34Speaker 1: from nineteen ninety six. There Savage Garden to the Moon
- 25:37Speaker 1: and back. Nice gentle song for this afternoon and because
- 25:42Speaker 1: we're talking about cricket. And I'm joined now by Malcolm Porter. Hello, Malcolm,
- 25:45Speaker 1: how are you right? Excellent? So now welcome to the show. Malcolm.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Now I understand you're involved with the walking and the
- 25:52Speaker 1: disability sections of the club. So let's talk about disability
- 25:56Speaker 1: section first of all. I mean is that a well
- 25:59Speaker 1: established thing? Was it a new venture?
- 26:02Speaker 3: Well it's yes and no, I've got well established set up.
- 26:08Speaker 3: I do a after school club at the Beacon School, Folkston,
- 26:15Speaker 3: and that was set that set up by Doors Tabernas
- 26:19Speaker 3: they called Lord Tabna's Super Ones and that's a nationwide
- 26:24Speaker 3: set up that as it said, the Lord Tabna's sponsor
- 26:28Speaker 3: and they have a setup of centers throughout Kent. And
- 26:37Speaker 3: then we were closely allied with people in Surrey, Hampshire
- 26:42Speaker 3: and and Sussex. So between them they get together all
- 26:49Speaker 3: the less able people to do tournaments. And so I'm
- 26:55Speaker 3: involved with the with the hub that's at the Beacon.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Right okay, And I mean what's the structure of the
- 27:02Speaker 1: game if you like the disability level. Do you have tournaments,
- 27:05Speaker 1: training nights? Do they come to three Hills?
- 27:09Speaker 2: No?
- 27:09Speaker 1: I do it at the school.
- 27:11Speaker 3: At the school. It's so because disability is a huge area.
- 27:17Speaker 3: So most of the people that I get in contact
- 27:20Speaker 3: with that comes to the after school club are learning disability.
- 27:26Speaker 3: So there'd be a down syndrome sufferers and various disability
- 27:34Speaker 3: learning disabilities that they have to cope with on a
- 27:37Speaker 3: day day basis. It's a sixteen to twenty four year
- 27:41Speaker 3: old age group that and that's all designated by Lord
- 27:46Speaker 3: Taverner's but I've always been we've been given the Disability
- 27:52Speaker 3: Champions Club status which we give them some money and
- 27:59Speaker 3: some kit but be so it's our responsibility now to
- 28:06Speaker 3: to reach out to the local community to provide them
- 28:10Speaker 3: with with activities based around cricket for people that have.
- 28:17Speaker 1: So there's all sorts of different disabilities that are going on.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I mean, does that affect the way that the game
- 28:24Speaker 1: is played? I mean is it kind of uneven sometimes?
- 28:29Speaker 3: I mean we go from what's called table table, which
- 28:35Speaker 3: is literally a table where they have little paddles they
- 28:39Speaker 3: roll the ball down a slope a bit like you
- 28:44Speaker 3: show cricket.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:47Speaker 3: It's that sort of idea, and then they it's mainly
- 28:52Speaker 3: played with people that are in wheelchairs.
- 28:55Speaker 1: The lack of actionbility. Yeah.
- 28:59Speaker 3: So uh, I just have a session and each time
- 29:05Speaker 3: it's the same because they like it that way. They
- 29:08Speaker 3: know what they're going to do and they're going to
- 29:09Speaker 3: do some catching, and they're going to some hitting, and
- 29:12Speaker 3: then we're going to a game and they're happy. I'm
- 29:17Speaker 3: you won't remember what he did last time, but they very.
- 29:21Speaker 1: So how long do these sessions last? An hour or
- 29:24Speaker 1: an hour and a half? Yeah, yeah, yeah right, And
- 29:26Speaker 1: do you find that they might lose interest after a
- 29:29Speaker 1: while or they or they get more into it?
- 29:31Speaker 3: No, they're yeah, well if that's up to me to.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Keep going, Yeah, that's your job.
- 29:37Speaker 3: That's my job.
- 29:38Speaker 1: It's a tough job.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it's more challenging, yeah, to than normal.
- 29:45Speaker 1: So if you go up to the beacon and you're
- 29:47Speaker 1: doing a quickie, do you get any of the teachers,
- 29:49Speaker 1: just keep an eye and in cases any issues with
- 29:51Speaker 1: the kids.
- 29:52Speaker 3: You know, I've got Alice who is a t a
- 29:56Speaker 3: at the school and she's also a coke folks. Okay,
- 30:01Speaker 3: so between us, we we look after it. There's a
- 30:05Speaker 3: chap who who was tell the injured and is now
- 30:10Speaker 3: partially disabled and he comes and helps as well. So
- 30:17Speaker 3: it's given him.
- 30:18Speaker 1: A oh I see, so he's although he's disabled, he's
- 30:21Speaker 1: sort of acting as a sort of second coach or yeah,
- 30:24Speaker 1: yeah that's the word.
- 30:25Speaker 3: It gives him something. Look forward to this week as well.
- 30:28Speaker 3: So a win win situation, brilliant.
- 30:32Speaker 1: And how many do you handle at a time? How
- 30:34Speaker 1: many in the class.
- 30:36Speaker 3: Recently we've been handed about six? I mean we can
- 30:38Speaker 3: up there are if they all turn up to about
- 30:42Speaker 3: ten of them, Yeah, and can be quite boisterous.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Yeah. I bet they're great.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Love.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I bet they love it, letting off steam and smacking
- 30:51Speaker 1: them all around it.
- 30:52Speaker 3: Absolutely, But the worst is when there's three siblings that.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Come Oh is therema is it?
- 30:59Speaker 3: Yeah? But because for the Disability Champions Club, I've got
- 31:05Speaker 3: to come up with well not me personally, but I
- 31:07Speaker 3: mean the club's got to come up with ways of
- 31:11Speaker 3: attracting more disabled cricket in our region. So I've been
- 31:16Speaker 3: going in to the Beacon to do some lunchtime clubs
- 31:22Speaker 3: and help with pea lessons and that, so that the
- 31:28Speaker 3: I take over the pea lesson the cricket centered. So
- 31:33Speaker 3: and that was primary schoolse of sort of nine ten eleven.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Year olds, right, okay, well before we move on to
- 31:40Speaker 1: the walking football, is anything else you want to add
- 31:41Speaker 1: to the disability side of things?
- 31:43Speaker 3: If your child is is you know, it's looking for
- 31:47Speaker 3: something to do and they haven't been able to do
- 31:50Speaker 3: ending because they're disability. Get in contact with the club
- 31:54Speaker 3: and I'm sure we can find something we can set
- 31:57Speaker 3: up for them.
- 31:58Speaker 1: To do because other people are much more aware. And
- 32:02Speaker 1: I think this word inclusive now is really the buzzword,
- 32:06Speaker 1: isn't it. They don't leave anybody out these days. Before
- 32:09Speaker 1: people like you're dealing with were pushed to one side.
- 32:12Speaker 1: They weren't allowed to even go out on the playground. Possibly,
- 32:14Speaker 1: but now there's a different train of thought. People are
- 32:17Speaker 1: encouraging it.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean we do. We do play our form
- 32:22Speaker 3: of pass cricket, you know when I look game at
- 32:26Speaker 3: the end and I mean yeah, most of the bowlings
- 32:31Speaker 3: no balls each time, you know, and they hit it
- 32:36Speaker 3: once out Yeah yeah, but they're enjoying it joy. Yeah.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Okay, so walking cricket now once again, is this a
- 32:43Speaker 1: new idea? It's not a new idea, but.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Right What happened was that ah U k oh Yes
- 32:52Speaker 3: come up with in with help from the chargeable Kent
- 32:59Speaker 3: Cricket Child Trust of providing cricket and tea opportunities, and
- 33:08Speaker 3: they asked Folkston to do the post the first one.
- 33:14Speaker 3: So we had I think about eight about eight people
- 33:18Speaker 3: turn up to Folkstone and I basically did a as
- 33:24Speaker 3: if I was coaching the under nine. So I sort
- 33:26Speaker 3: of went through a coaching session and and then we
- 33:31Speaker 3: had a little game in the end again pairs cricket
- 33:33Speaker 3: and so. But the the sort of the idea behind
- 33:37Speaker 3: it was was that there are the there are men
- 33:40Speaker 3: out there who who perhaps lived just living on their
- 33:43Speaker 3: own and they've lost their wife, uh and there's not
- 33:47Speaker 3: so many opportunities for them to get out of the
- 33:51Speaker 3: house and and they get slightly fit. And also I
- 33:54Speaker 3: think there's always with men. You know, I'm not doing that.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, So I just need a little
- 34:01Speaker 1: you know, some of them just need a little bit
- 34:03Speaker 1: of encouragement, a little push. Once they get a taste
- 34:05Speaker 1: for it, they'll bet they come back. Oh god, yeah
- 34:07Speaker 1: yeah yeah yeah.
- 34:08Speaker 3: What what I do is called I called it inclusive
- 34:11Speaker 3: cricket because there is walking cricket and that has rules. Yes,
- 34:16Speaker 3: and we have played against other counties. We play against Surrey,
- 34:21Speaker 3: we've got this annual annual match going on, and we've
- 34:24Speaker 3: also played at Lord's where they had a national walking
- 34:29Speaker 3: Cricket festival as well. Whether they invited all the counties
- 34:35Speaker 3: in sort I think it's about four or five groups
- 34:39Speaker 3: of you know. So we were playing Derbyshire and oh brilliant,
- 34:43Speaker 3: and these some take it very seriously. We don't, but
- 34:48Speaker 3: they have defined rules. Literally you can't walk, can't run,
- 34:54Speaker 3: and it's a seventeen yard yard pitch and you can't
- 34:58Speaker 3: run when you're fielding, you know, you bowl off two
- 35:01Speaker 3: paces and and and when we've played it at Folkston
- 35:06Speaker 3: where we started it, we didn't like it. So we
- 35:09Speaker 3: just play indoor cricket, pays cricket. If you can't run,
- 35:14Speaker 3: you people from run. If you can't run, you.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Run halfway or and does that work? There's the strict
- 35:23Speaker 1: not the strictness, because there's more more of a flexible game.
- 35:26Speaker 3: Now is it absolutely totally a flexible You bowl under arm.
- 35:31Speaker 3: If you can't bowl under arm, just throw it. I mean,
- 35:35Speaker 3: we've got a lady. She's a tired lady. She'd never
- 35:40Speaker 3: stayed play sport in her life. And she turns up
- 35:43Speaker 3: and she just to go halfway down the wicket to
- 35:45Speaker 3: throw it together to the other end. But she's one
- 35:49Speaker 3: of these people that is always traveling. You know, suns
- 35:51Speaker 3: are in America and she's got relations in Philippines and works.
- 35:57Speaker 3: She's always out and about, but every times she's in
- 36:01Speaker 3: around she comes and games as it goes. So we
- 36:07Speaker 3: but we've had people with ms, we've had we've got
- 36:12Speaker 3: people Debentier and there's an even newer form of it
- 36:18Speaker 3: called New Diversion Cricket for people with Parkinson's. Yes, and
- 36:26Speaker 3: they they can't run very well, so they've divided the
- 36:31Speaker 3: game where they just have to hit it into areas. Yeah,
- 36:35Speaker 3: they've broken up and.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Once again it is like bending the rules. But because
- 36:39Speaker 1: the audience is out there, isn't it bending the rules
- 36:41Speaker 1: to suit the audience. Rather if the audience can't play
- 36:44Speaker 1: to the rules, they never get a game. At least
- 36:46Speaker 1: everyone gets a chance, don't they.
- 36:48Speaker 3: We've had a tournament at Canterby Polar Farm where we
- 36:54Speaker 3: had a couple of ladies sides, we had a couple
- 36:57Speaker 3: of New Diversion sides. We had the walking It's well
- 37:01Speaker 3: the folkusing a group made up of the various centers
- 37:05Speaker 3: of in Kent, because we've now got center at Folkston, Canterbury,
- 37:10Speaker 3: Sitting Born and somewhere else.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Yeah, just catching on anyway.
- 37:18Speaker 3: Maystone, that's right. So yeah, yeah, So we've had a
- 37:21Speaker 3: couple of teams made up for people from there and
- 37:24Speaker 3: we just divide a format that everyone could.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Play and it was great, brilliant right. Okay, Well we're
- 37:32Speaker 1: cracking on and I'd love to get another little guest
- 37:34Speaker 1: in before. But is there anything else you want to
- 37:37Speaker 1: add to, Malcolm, to your your little chat there?
- 37:40Speaker 3: Yes, turn up. Yeah, although it's the way it runs
- 37:46Speaker 3: is it's part of the over fifties Active Sessions at Folkston.
- 37:52Speaker 3: So if if you're already part of that set up,
- 37:57Speaker 3: it's free. But if you're not, you just do walking, cricket,
- 38:02Speaker 3: or you can join the whole thing. You can do
- 38:05Speaker 3: what's it called.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I've had guys.
- 38:09Speaker 3: And plates and fitness.
- 38:12Speaker 1: And yeah, lots going on there.
- 38:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so male, female, any sort of gender. Yeah, you
- 38:19Speaker 3: can just turn up. It's supposed to be over fifties,
- 38:22Speaker 3: but we've had younger people that have got you know,
- 38:25Speaker 3: learning difficulty. Yeah, yeah, come and join us.
- 38:27Speaker 1: And that's really good. It's just it's just makes everybody
- 38:31Speaker 1: everything available to everybody, doesn't it, And that's that it
- 38:34Speaker 1: should be.
- 38:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and there's team and biscuits afterwards.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Oh wow, yeah, okay, no chaffa cakes cakes Okay, Malcolm. Well,
- 38:45Speaker 1: we just want to move on there and stay where
- 38:46Speaker 1: you are for a sec. We're just going to play
- 38:48Speaker 1: this song. This is from nineteen ninety four. It's Sheryl
