- 1:00:00Are you a figure skater or a hockey
- 1:00:01player or someone who
- 1:00:02enjoys skating on ice?
- 1:00:04Imagine if I told you that there's ways
- 1:00:06to actually have a better
- 1:00:07impact on climate change
- 1:00:10based on the ice that you're skating on.
- 1:00:12Probably think, Andrew,
- 1:00:13I think you've lost it.
- 1:00:14What are you talking about?
- 1:00:15We're talking about a different type of
- 1:00:17ice that doesn't
- 1:00:18require energy to ensure that
- 1:00:20the ice freezes.
- 1:00:22This is just a pad that you can skate on
- 1:00:25and you don't need to freeze it.
- 1:00:27You don't need cold weather.
- 1:00:28You can actually be in an arena or
- 1:00:30outside in Dubai if you want to be or in
- 1:00:33Egypt or somewhere in the Middle East
- 1:00:35where it's really boiling hot and you can
- 1:00:38skate and you can play hockey and you can
- 1:00:40figure skate and you can
- 1:00:41do whatever you'd like.
- 1:00:42You can even do curling
- 1:00:43clubs and so that stuff.
- 1:00:44It is amazing.
- 1:00:46It's a lot of fun.
- 1:00:47People are skating on this.
- 1:01:13You can do it.
- 1:01:14It's a lot of fun. It's an awesome thing to have. I want to thank you for being here and for you guys. I want to thank you for sharing.
- 1:01:17I'm a friend of yours, Andrew, you're doing great.
- 1:01:17You're doing great. I'm a friend of mine, Andrew. And I want to thank you for being here. It's been a pleasure. Thank you so much for joining us. We're so proud to be here. And thank you for being here. We hope you guys have a great day. We are so proud. We will see you next week. Bye. Bye. We'll see you next week. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. And this is the podcast where you find
- 1:01:19out what's happening with the ocean how
- 1:01:20you can speak up for
- 1:01:21the ocean and what you can
- 1:01:22Do to live for a better ocean by taking
- 1:01:25action and on today's episode. We've got
- 1:01:27Victor Meyer from Glyce
- 1:01:28It's a company that creates a different
- 1:01:31type of ice that doesn't require a lot of
- 1:01:33energy to make the
- 1:01:34traditional ice that I skate on
- 1:01:36And that my daughter skate on when I
- 1:01:37coach on the play hockey
- 1:01:38Requires a lot of energy to not only
- 1:01:40maintain the ice but also to freeze the
- 1:01:42new water that you put on through Zamboni
- 1:01:44Which is gas powered and runs about 20
- 1:01:47times a day if it's on one pad
- 1:01:49but all these all these ice rinks now
- 1:01:52have like three or four pads so it runs
- 1:01:53multiple times a day and
- 1:01:55It needs to put water down so that
- 1:01:57freezes even more but
- 1:01:58that the freezing aspect
- 1:02:00There's a lot of energy to use and
- 1:02:03imagine if you can just eliminate that
- 1:02:04energy and just put on
- 1:02:06these pads that don't require
- 1:02:08You know the energy to keep a cold
- 1:02:10because it doesn't need to be cold
- 1:02:11because it's not ice
- 1:02:11it's just a polymer that you can use
- 1:02:13that's like ice and as slippery as ice
- 1:02:15and you can glide on it
- 1:02:16with your skate blades and
- 1:02:18You can have it not only on an ice rink,
- 1:02:20but you can have it in your home
- 1:02:22You can have it in your backyard. You can
- 1:02:24have it pretty much
- 1:02:24anywhere and as a Canadian
- 1:02:26Who values being able to
- 1:02:28skate on a regular basis?
- 1:02:30This is a game-changer as
- 1:02:33someone who's a coach for hockey
- 1:02:35This is a game-changer to allow some of
- 1:02:38the the kids that I coach
- 1:02:39to be able to get on a on a pad and
- 1:02:43skate around and shoot and just be able
- 1:02:46to build on their skills in
- 1:02:48Their backyard or in their basement or in
- 1:02:51their house. It's one of the things
- 1:02:53that's a game-changer
- 1:02:54Maybe even make the sport of hockey
- 1:02:57figure skating whatever you do on the ice
- 1:03:00Even better when you get it because
- 1:03:02they're a little the the number of people
- 1:03:03that will be playing on this type of ice
- 1:03:05Will be even better. So we're gonna talk
- 1:03:07to Victor Meyer who's the
- 1:03:09CEO of this and the co-founder
- 1:03:11You know, he's really passionate about
- 1:03:14this the amount of different
- 1:03:18Applications of ice was really surprising
- 1:03:21to me and how he got into
- 1:03:22this and how he wanted to
- 1:03:25Be part of a business that had a good
- 1:03:28environmental impact. We're
- 1:03:29gonna talk about that today
- 1:03:31Enjoy the interview and I'll talk to you
- 1:03:33after hey Victor. Welcome to the how to
- 1:03:35protect the ocean podcast
- 1:03:36Are you ready to talk
- 1:03:37about ice? Of course? Yes
- 1:03:41Love it. I love it. Look,
- 1:03:42I'm super pumped for this
- 1:03:43This is something that you know when I
- 1:03:45started the how to
- 1:03:45protect the ocean podcast
- 1:03:46I didn't think I'd be talking to people
- 1:03:48such as yourself who are making ice for
- 1:03:50people to enjoy to skate on not for
- 1:03:53Putting in their glasses or nothing. This
- 1:03:55is for people to do go
- 1:03:56figure skating play hockey
- 1:03:58pleasure skating wherever you want in the
- 1:04:00world you can have ice and there's a
- 1:04:02Interesting way that you make it and
- 1:04:04we're gonna get into all of that and I
- 1:04:05can't I can't wait to do this
- 1:04:07But this is part of an ongoing
- 1:04:08sort of series that I'm doing to
- 1:04:11Get people to know some of the
- 1:04:13entrepreneurs that are out there that
- 1:04:14I'm going to do stuff that are good for
- 1:04:16that's good for the ocean good for the
- 1:04:18planet and Victor you reached out
- 1:04:20You're like, I'm one of those people I
- 1:04:21wanted I want to get on the how to
- 1:04:22protect the ocean podcast love the ocean
- 1:04:24Uh, so we're gonna get to it. I can't
- 1:04:26wait to do that before
- 1:04:27we do though, uh, victor
- 1:04:28Why don't you just let us know who you
- 1:04:30are and what you do?
- 1:04:32Well, um, i'm victor mayer. I'm
- 1:04:35originally from switzerland. I grew up in
- 1:04:37the mountains in the nature
- 1:04:39and uh
- 1:04:41but but even if i'm a
- 1:04:43mountain cheese or you're like a
- 1:04:45Mountain swiss cheese, I I love the ocean
- 1:04:47as well. I love diving
- 1:04:49snorkeling, you know everything and uh,
- 1:04:52whenever I get to the ocean even if it's
- 1:04:55uh cold I go into the water and
- 1:04:57You know the salty taste. I just love it
- 1:05:00Oh amazing and you're doing this
- 1:05:02interview from indonesia. Have you had a
- 1:05:05chance to go diving so far?
- 1:05:08Yes, actually, I I explored different
- 1:05:10places and and the marine life is
- 1:05:12amazing. I've seen month arrays
- 1:05:15I've been snorkeling with month arrays
- 1:05:16and and all kinds of uh sea life. It's
- 1:05:20really beautiful. I can
- 1:05:21recommend anyone who has a
- 1:05:23chance to go to indonesia go
- 1:05:25Go snorkeling. I can imagine. Yeah,
- 1:05:27that's something that I feel like that's
- 1:05:29like a bucket listing if
- 1:05:30you go to southeast asia
- 1:05:32Especially indonesia that area is just
- 1:05:34uh, it's absolutely stunning
- 1:05:36So definitely on my bucket list to do so
- 1:05:38Little little envious of you right now is
- 1:05:40to be able to be around that and I think
- 1:05:42that's that's amazing
- 1:05:43So let's talk. Uh, let's not get to know
- 1:05:45you a little bit more
- 1:05:47In terms of of you know, how you grew up
- 1:05:49you obviously grew up in
- 1:05:50switzerland, you know, nature lover
- 1:05:53You have beautiful
- 1:05:53mountains beautiful nature
- 1:05:55Kind of went all over the place you how
- 1:05:57long did you live in switzerland for?
- 1:06:00So I was uh until my
- 1:06:02the beginning of my 20s
- 1:06:04Okay, I grew up in switzerland and as you
- 1:06:06said like I grew up next to a forest
- 1:06:08I was always uh playing in the forest
- 1:06:11making huts or like uh,
- 1:06:14Three houses and stuff and and uh, you
- 1:06:16know like little cable cars
- 1:06:18like where where you go down
- 1:06:20like a ramble or yeah, yeah
- 1:06:22Yeah, but it was also in
- 1:06:26my childhood in the mid 80s
- 1:06:29Um, we had you know the Chernobyl
- 1:06:32accident in Ukraine, right?
- 1:06:34And actually, uh, I remember
- 1:06:36I was like six seven years old
- 1:06:38Uh, we were not allowed for like three
- 1:06:41four weeks to to pay out
- 1:06:43because of the radiation
- 1:06:45And and there that was so impactful. I
- 1:06:48realized oh, you know, we humans can
- 1:06:51Can basically fuck up the planet, right?
- 1:06:54100%
- 1:06:55I did not know it
- 1:06:56affected the air quality
- 1:06:58I never even thought about it. You just
- 1:06:59hear Chernobyl and and you think it just
- 1:07:02affected everybody in Chernobyl
- 1:07:03But you never thought it would affect
- 1:07:05anybody on outside
- 1:07:06countries, especially switzerland
- 1:07:08I never would have thought about that.
- 1:07:10Did anybody get affected by that? Like
- 1:07:12did they ever do studies to see who like
- 1:07:14How far the plume went maybe as a
- 1:07:17precaution that just said maybe don't
- 1:07:19Don't eat. Uh don't drink milk because
- 1:07:21the the grass is eaten by by cows
- 1:07:24Right and don't play outside and I mean
- 1:07:27europe is you know, it's it's it's
- 1:07:29raining, right? So so
- 1:07:30Right. So it's it's I don't know how many
- 1:07:33maybe 2000 miles away, right?
- 1:07:36But that's enough for a cloud to come
- 1:07:38over. I think you know, it's something we
- 1:07:40don't realize how air
- 1:07:42pollution can travel
- 1:07:43So much, you know, I did an interview a
- 1:07:45number of years ago. I think it was
- 1:07:46probably eight years ago now
- 1:07:48uh about polar bears and in canada
- 1:07:50obviously we have polar bears up north
- 1:07:51and and the scientists were saying that
- 1:07:54There there was proof and evidence that
- 1:07:56the air quality from southern ontario
- 1:07:59Was getting up north in northern ontario
- 1:08:01where these polar bears were
- 1:08:03and in in in the arctic and it was
- 1:08:06actually they can detect the same type of
- 1:08:09chemicals within the air from ontario the
- 1:08:12southern ontario into northern
- 1:08:13ontario in the polar bears fur
- 1:08:16And so they're saying that was affecting
- 1:08:18their overall health
- 1:08:19But you never really that was just a
- 1:08:21surprise to me because you you never
- 1:08:22think about how far air goes
- 1:08:25I mean even just last not last
- 1:08:27summer the summer before that
- 1:08:28There were four or five forest fires all
- 1:08:30over canada and it got so bad in kabak
- 1:08:32that the the smoke just I guess the wind
- 1:08:34Shifted smoke went down into new york
- 1:08:36city where it looked like
- 1:08:38Apocalypse, you know, you probably saw
- 1:08:39those videos the videos pictures last
- 1:08:42year and it just
- 1:08:43looked like an apocalypse
- 1:08:43So we don't that just surprised me so
- 1:08:46much. I did not think about that
- 1:08:48But I guess as a child that makes you
- 1:08:49think and as you grew up, you're probably
- 1:08:50like well, hold on a second here
- 1:08:52What are we doing to this planet? Like
- 1:08:53what's going on here? Right exactly?
- 1:08:55Yeah, and that's that's
- 1:08:56That developed my consciousness for
- 1:09:00Preservation. I remember I joined the wwf
- 1:09:04uh
- 1:09:05activities I was collecting money for
- 1:09:07them and so on and uh,
- 1:09:08yeah, and I always needed
- 1:09:11If and i'm a grown-up
- 1:09:12I want to you know, I want to take care
- 1:09:14of of our planet and ecology
- 1:09:16and actually my my path was
- 1:09:19to become a diplomat
- 1:09:21So I went to study
- 1:09:24international studies
- 1:09:26We focus on diplomacy and focus on
- 1:09:29international environment studies
- 1:09:31And I was supposed to go work on on the
- 1:09:34swiss embassy and so on
- 1:09:36And it was during my studies that I
- 1:09:38realized that I have like
- 1:09:40entrepreneurial, you know, uh hang and
- 1:09:43during my studies I developed uh
- 1:09:46A company basically it wasn't my company,
- 1:09:48but was for a german
- 1:09:50company. I I suggested them
- 1:09:52Hey, I open your swiss french, um
- 1:09:56subsidiary
- 1:09:57Yeah, and that was quite successful and
- 1:09:59and and from there I developed my
- 1:10:01confidence in in uh,
- 1:10:03entrepreneurship and and actually went
- 1:10:05that route and after my studies, uh, I
- 1:10:09had uh saved some money because of
- 1:10:11Building that business right I went to
- 1:10:13travel backpacking around the world for
- 1:10:15one and a half years
- 1:10:17and
- 1:10:19After one half years I got stuck in texas
- 1:10:22In the u.s
- 1:10:24Exactly of all places of all places. Yeah
- 1:10:27And I worked there for a technology
- 1:10:29startup. I like the
- 1:10:31startup scenes and so on
- 1:10:33and then I went back to
- 1:10:34switzerland worked for a
- 1:10:36medical
- 1:10:37device company
- 1:10:39And was and but I didn't I didn't like
- 1:10:42the job. It was like a big
- 1:10:44corporation and stuff, right?
- 1:10:45And and it was there where um, I one
- 1:10:48evening I watched bpc a show about
- 1:10:51In invent inventors and I saw a guy who
- 1:10:54developed a material which looks like ice
- 1:10:57It feels like ice but some ice
- 1:10:59And he can't skate on it and it doesn't
- 1:11:02use energy. Nothing like
- 1:11:04that. So, um, I googled the guy
- 1:11:06Yeah, I impacted him and out of the blue,
- 1:11:09you know, I appeared and and I let me
- 1:11:12skate on it and I said hey
- 1:11:13I
- 1:11:15I can help you build the business and so
- 1:11:1850 50 we started the
- 1:11:19company together in switzerland
- 1:11:22And the rest is is history
- 1:11:25So tell me more about
- 1:11:26this ice because you know
- 1:11:27Obviously as a canadian ice is a big part
- 1:11:30of my life, you know, I grew up on it
- 1:11:32I skated I played hockey
- 1:11:34for pretty much all of my life
- 1:11:36My brother went to europe to play hockey
- 1:11:38like hockey is in our family and when
- 1:11:40hockey's on like when my family
- 1:11:42When I was young
- 1:11:43Nobody talked, you know
- 1:11:44It was like we just we just walked hockey
- 1:11:47Every day and if we weren't watching it
- 1:11:48we were playing it like it was it was one
- 1:11:50of the two road hockey any kind of hockey
- 1:11:53But ice obviously, you know, you don't
- 1:11:54really think about what goes into making
- 1:11:57the ice. You just think oh, it's ice
- 1:11:58It's probably just water. It freezes.
- 1:12:00There's probably
- 1:12:01something underneath the the
- 1:12:03um the ice to like to make it freeze and
- 1:12:05ensure that it stays frozen so that you
- 1:12:07can grind and and and cut and
- 1:12:09everything into the ice
- 1:12:12Before you talk about what this ice is.
- 1:12:14Can you just talk about how
- 1:12:15regular skating ice is made so that we
- 1:12:19can see the difference
- 1:12:19Of course, so normally,
- 1:12:23um you have like uh tubes
- 1:12:25Yeah
- 1:12:26like like coils of of tubes or lines
- 1:12:29And there's a cooling agent which is
- 1:12:32cooled down by a chiller.
- 1:12:33Okay, that's where I use
- 1:12:36Enormous amounts of energy which goes
- 1:12:38through these these uh tubes. Okay, okay
- 1:12:41And and so it works like a freezer and
- 1:12:43then obviously you put water on it
- 1:12:45But a lot of uh water uh evaporates or
- 1:12:48goes away. So you have to add water.
- 1:12:51Yeah, so it's hence the same
- 1:12:51Exactly the Zamboni takes it off and so
- 1:12:56you have very high uh energy consumption
- 1:12:59Right a lot of water consumption and if
- 1:13:03it's indoor it has to
- 1:13:04be perfectly insulated
- 1:13:07So you have air conditioning you have
- 1:13:09dehumidifier so you have again
- 1:13:11electricity used there and
- 1:13:14As a rule of thumb is every square meter
- 1:13:17of ice uses the same energy
- 1:13:20Um like like an average home in in
- 1:13:23switzerland or canada
- 1:13:24Okay, and so if you have an olympic size
- 1:13:27rink, which is 1,800 square meter. That's
- 1:13:31equal to 1,800 homes
- 1:13:34in terms of
- 1:13:35Energy consumption and water. Okay, of
- 1:13:38course it varies if if the environment is
- 1:13:40super cold in december or so
- 1:13:43The energy consumption
- 1:13:44is less but if you have
- 1:13:46Then there are many rinks in in florida
- 1:13:49Or so on they use much more energy than
- 1:13:52what I just described. So so yeah
- 1:13:55And and that's exactly
- 1:13:56where it will be coming
- 1:13:58We believe that ice sports
- 1:14:00you said hockey and so on
- 1:14:02These are amazing sports that they bring
- 1:14:04people together keep them fit healthy
- 1:14:07But it's not sustainable
- 1:14:09Right to make ice right and and that's
- 1:14:12where our technology is coming in
- 1:14:16This is interesting because you never
- 1:14:17again you never think about this is all
- 1:14:19this surprising to me. I
- 1:14:20grew up around ice, you know
- 1:14:21Even even to this day. I coach hockey
- 1:14:23I'm in the rings like
- 1:14:24at least twice a week
- 1:14:26And I still don't really realize how much
- 1:14:28energy is used up when creating the ice
- 1:14:32And maintaining the ice, you know, you
- 1:14:34think about a zamboni zamboni runs. It's
- 1:14:36not electric. It's runs on gas
- 1:14:38You know, it's got to go around
- 1:14:41at least
- 1:14:42Probably 20 times a day, you know, maybe
- 1:14:45more and it's running around
- 1:14:46the ice and it goes double pads
- 1:14:48It was always on plus the actual
- 1:14:50generation of the energy to you know
- 1:14:53To make sure that ice stays
- 1:14:54stays nice and cold and hard
- 1:14:56So let's talk. So that's that's really
- 1:14:58interesting. So here's the problem. The
- 1:14:59problem is it uses a lot of energy
- 1:15:01Uh, so it's that's expensive to make
- 1:15:03It's expensive to maintain
- 1:15:05It's not good for the
- 1:15:06climate you guys decide. Okay
- 1:15:09Let's solve this problem. Let's make ice.
- 1:15:11That's not really ice.
- 1:15:12So let's talk about glice
- 1:15:14Yeah
- 1:15:15So, uh basically glice
- 1:15:18It if it looks like a cutting board you
- 1:15:20have in your in your kitchen, right?
- 1:15:22Okay, so we use high grade polymers
- 1:15:25Okay, you use different additives, uh,
- 1:15:28like silicon and so on
- 1:15:30Some additives you don't disclose
- 1:15:33These are uh nano technology
- 1:15:35nanotechnology
- 1:15:36Or nanoparticles. Okay, and they they
- 1:15:40just designed on engineered
- 1:15:41in a way to lower the friction
- 1:15:44Okay, so so that okay
- 1:15:46when you skate on it. Yeah
- 1:15:48The molecules of our
- 1:15:51glide surface they release
- 1:15:53um
- 1:15:54Gliding agents. Okay, and and so the
- 1:15:57skate glides on on these
- 1:15:59this uh tiny gliding agents
- 1:16:03And and so it's it's
- 1:16:04uh perfectly seamless
- 1:16:06Yeah
- 1:16:07So does it when you go over with a blade
- 1:16:09like on regular ice when
- 1:16:11you go over with the blade?
- 1:16:13You make a mark
- 1:16:14Probably right like you're as you turn or
- 1:16:17as you dig your edges
- 1:16:18in you can make a mark
- 1:16:20Does this make a mark?
- 1:16:21in the in the glice
- 1:16:24Yeah
- 1:16:24So you yeah, but not as deep as on
- 1:16:27realize so so you have like
- 1:16:28micro marks. Yeah, and and uh
- 1:16:32From if you go close you can see it. It's
- 1:16:34like the surface is like scratched
- 1:16:36from far away
- 1:16:37It looks perfectly uniform
- 1:16:40And what is interesting is the more
- 1:16:42scratched is the
- 1:16:43surface it even glides better
- 1:16:45So it's probably the only product which
- 1:16:47becomes better the more
- 1:16:48you use it and and uh, yeah
- 1:16:51And it's it sounds like wow, it doesn't
- 1:16:54get scratched away, right?
- 1:16:56But actually the the
- 1:16:57lifetime of our product is 30 years
- 1:17:00And after 15 years half time you can flip
- 1:17:03it over and you have a brand new surface
- 1:17:05Are you serious?
- 1:17:07So so it's uh, it's basically
- 1:17:09undestroyable, uh surface. Wow
- 1:17:11Yeah, that's incredible. So
- 1:17:14I love let me ask as someone who likes to
- 1:17:16have sharp skates when
- 1:17:18I when I when I skate
- 1:17:20Yeah, do these dull the skates?
- 1:17:23Because of the polymers or does the the
- 1:17:25agent that allows them to glide it just
- 1:17:27doesn't it does the same thing as ice
- 1:17:28Like you have to sharpen your skates a
- 1:17:31lot more since you're on this license
- 1:17:33compared to being on regular ice
- 1:17:36That's a brilliant question. Yes, so
- 1:17:39our
- 1:17:40Our eyes the glides our glides ice it
- 1:17:43it's the friction is a bit higher than
- 1:17:45regularly perfectly resurfaced ice. Okay
- 1:17:49although
- 1:17:50And it's just it's a matter of time
- 1:17:52because we are doing research
- 1:17:54Of course every year we come out with a
- 1:17:56new generation and we are just working on
- 1:17:58on the next generation
- 1:17:59So we we try to get us close to uh,
- 1:18:02perfectly freshly resurfaced ice
- 1:18:05I I ice is already better than any ice
- 1:18:08you find on the average christmas market
- 1:18:11where you know, like
- 1:18:11The samboni hasn't passed for three hours
- 1:18:14and so yeah, but we try to get there
- 1:18:16until you have to sharpen
- 1:18:19A bit more often than than on the regular
- 1:18:21ice. I just find I mean
- 1:18:23It's a small compromise
- 1:18:25Yeah for for setting the
- 1:18:26planet, right? Of course
- 1:18:27And what's the maintenance of this ice
- 1:18:30like like obviously, you know
- 1:18:31When you have regular ice that like the
- 1:18:33traditional ice that we that we use you
- 1:18:36have a zamboni that goes over the ice
- 1:18:37And it it puts water over it. So it fills
- 1:18:40all the cracks and then it freezes again
- 1:18:42What's the maintenance
- 1:18:43on on the glice itself?
- 1:18:46It's uh simply cleaning
- 1:18:48So so we we sell a
- 1:18:49cleaning machine. Okay, but
- 1:18:52Also regular floor cleaning machines you
- 1:18:54see in the shopping malls. Oh, yeah. Okay
- 1:18:58rotating brush
- 1:19:00And uh, although we are right now, uh
- 1:19:02working on a special brush
- 1:19:04Who gives a special polish who even makes
- 1:19:07the glide better? So so right so there's
- 1:19:10always a lot of signs behind it
- 1:19:12Yeah, well and you're constantly adapting
- 1:19:14to make it even better and better and
- 1:19:15better as you go through, right?
- 1:19:17Yeah, exactly. Exactly. That's but but
- 1:19:20the short answer just cleaning you want
- 1:19:22to have a pristine nice white surface and
- 1:19:25Yeah, that's why you need to clean
- 1:19:27Okay
- 1:19:28Now, how do people how do people react
- 1:19:31when they realize that it's not your
- 1:19:33traditional type of
- 1:19:34ice when they go on it?
- 1:19:36so
- 1:19:39People who are not used to ice
- 1:19:41The child who you know who has never
- 1:19:44escaped and so on they go and and then
- 1:19:47they like it and they
- 1:19:48don't even realize it
- 1:19:49If a kid knows hockey knows regular ice
- 1:19:53The first impression is yes. Oh, it's a
- 1:19:55bit slower. I need a bit more effort
- 1:19:58Right, but it's actually only a matter of
- 1:20:00time if they go around
- 1:20:02It's they normally tell me
- 1:20:04it's like if you buy a new car
- 1:20:08You know at the beginning first 15 it
- 1:20:11feels different than your old car, right?
- 1:20:13The old car you felt you're not even
- 1:20:14thinking about how how
- 1:20:16to steer or how to uh
- 1:20:18And here's the same of the 15 20 minutes
- 1:20:20people get so used to it that
- 1:20:22they don't feel the difference
- 1:20:23But it's at the beginning
- 1:20:25a bit less effort. Um more
- 1:20:27It takes a little bit to adapt. I mean
- 1:20:30especially when you when
- 1:20:31you're so used to skating on
- 1:20:34This traditional ice, you know, you're
- 1:20:36you're used to the the ins and outs
- 1:20:38you've gotten used to
- 1:20:39how to use your edges
- 1:20:40Probably takes a little bit to to adapt
- 1:20:42to a new type of surface
- 1:20:44And but there's so
- 1:20:46when you make the surface
- 1:20:48Or when you is it laying down pads like
- 1:20:51these these they come in like large like
- 1:20:53smaller pads and and
- 1:20:54they you just lay them down
- 1:20:55And then you put them
- 1:20:57together. Is that how it works?
- 1:20:58Exactly. So so it's it's pads and and we
- 1:21:01have like a commercial version and they
- 1:21:04have the home version there
- 1:21:05The commercial
- 1:21:06version is tongue and groove
- 1:21:08Okay, the pin which comes in and it's
- 1:21:10it's a cnc machine. So
- 1:21:12it's perfectly computer
- 1:21:14You know cut. Oh, yeah
- 1:21:16So you when you skate you will not feel
- 1:21:18the seams right? So yeah, and for the
- 1:21:21home version we have it's like a dovetail
- 1:21:25So it takes you five minutes to install
- 1:21:27it and you know, normally it's it's a
- 1:21:30Dad and and something they order
- 1:21:33A small glass glass ring install it in
- 1:21:36the basement or in the backyard, you know
- 1:21:39They click it together and they can ice
- 1:21:41ice skate or play a match of hockey
- 1:21:44together. So amazing
- 1:21:45So it's very very easy.
- 1:21:47Yeah, and it's awesome
- 1:21:48I did allows, you know,
- 1:21:50like the the crazy thing
- 1:21:52We've done our rings
- 1:21:53already in over 100 countries
- 1:21:56We've done ice hockey match on the beach
- 1:21:59in rio de cineiro in brazil
- 1:22:01Or places you cannot
- 1:22:04imagine or there was like a huge
- 1:22:06um commercial being done on top of a
- 1:22:09mountain the highest hockey rink we set
- 1:22:11up and I did a commercial and so
- 1:22:14So it's you know, the sky is the limit in
- 1:22:16in what you can do with our surface
- 1:22:20Yeah, this is phenomenal
- 1:22:22What like as a guy who loves ice and even
- 1:22:24like, you know, it's it's difficult
- 1:22:26especially in the winter
- 1:22:28When you have kids and you want to put an
- 1:22:31ice rink in the backyard
- 1:22:33Climate change has really made it
- 1:22:34difficult because you never
- 1:22:35know if it's going to be a hot
- 1:22:37Winter like a warm winter or a cold
- 1:22:39winter like this
- 1:22:40winter. It's been pretty good
- 1:22:41Like we've had a lot of snow. We've had a
- 1:22:43lot of ice, you know
- 1:22:44It's been cold most of the days like
- 1:22:45below, you know minus, you
- 1:22:47know nine or minus 10 centigrade
- 1:22:50And so it's been nice like you could you
- 1:22:51could actually put a
- 1:22:52rink in your backyard
- 1:22:53But last year you couldn't like it was
- 1:22:55just like it was just you know
- 1:22:58It was warm. So there was like barely any
- 1:23:00snow and it and it barely got below below
- 1:23:03zero degrees centigrade
- 1:23:05So I can just imagine putting this in my
- 1:23:06backyard having it all year round and
- 1:23:09just putting on the skates and you know
- 1:23:11With some shorts and some skates would be
- 1:23:14a little weird, but you know,
- 1:23:15you could do it in the summer
- 1:23:16It doesn't matter you can
- 1:23:17you can work on your skills
- 1:23:19All all year long if you want or or have
- 1:23:21like a fun game of three on
- 1:23:23three or two on two or you know
- 1:23:25One-on-one or whatever
- 1:23:27In your backyard that
- 1:23:28that seems really amazing
- 1:23:30um, now from the commercial standpoint
- 1:23:32because I would imagine like the
- 1:23:34commercial standpoint is it's it's that's
- 1:23:36where the energy saving is right?
- 1:23:39um There is you just lay the pads down and
- 1:23:42that's it like there's no
- 1:23:44Energy required to keep it the way it is
- 1:23:47the same consistency.
- 1:23:48There's no energy required
- 1:23:50Maybe there's a little energy required in
- 1:23:52cleaning it because
- 1:23:53you're using the surface
- 1:23:54on on electricity
- 1:23:56But even then that's not
- 1:23:58like that's not huge. Yeah, it's
- 1:24:01Comfort. Yeah. Yeah. So so when you
- 1:24:03you've done hockey rinks then before
- 1:24:07Yeah, so so we yeah, we have hockey
- 1:24:09clients, uh, we have
- 1:24:12You know, they they they build different
- 1:24:14sizes of rinks where they play matches
- 1:24:16But uh, if we've gone much further we we
- 1:24:19have complete training center
- 1:24:22concepts where you have different
- 1:24:24stations on one station you you you
- 1:24:27practice slap shot and you have
- 1:24:30A raider measuring your speed you have
- 1:24:33reaction, uh, you know, yeah, where it's
- 1:24:35uh, your reaction is measured
- 1:24:37We have a glice skate mill where you can
- 1:24:40do conditioning work on on a on a like
- 1:24:42it's like a treadmill
- 1:24:44Right, right. It's a skate mill
- 1:24:45Okay, and so on and so it's a whole dream
- 1:24:48land for hockey players
- 1:24:50to improve their skills
- 1:24:52And and you have professional hockey
- 1:24:54clubs. They built that next
- 1:24:56to their regular arena that
- 1:24:59Center like that. Yeah
- 1:25:01And uh, so that that's on the
- 1:25:03professional side and then of course we
- 1:25:05have shopping malls christmas markets
- 1:25:09luxury hotels and so on so sorry the
- 1:25:11The list is is endless. We even have a
- 1:25:15movie a lot of movies, you know, they
- 1:25:17cannot afford uh, they need a lake
- 1:25:20uh, a nice frozen lake for
- 1:25:22a romantic ice skating scene
- 1:25:25Oh
- 1:25:25Okay, I got you
- 1:25:27So they get the ring from us or even and
- 1:25:31you will be surprised
- 1:25:32Um, you know when they develop new cars
- 1:25:35Okay
- 1:25:36They need to test it.
- 1:25:37How does he act on on ice?
- 1:25:40and
- 1:25:41um the the
- 1:25:42Manufacturers the automotive
- 1:25:44manufacturers that have either indoor
- 1:25:46ice Cating rings for for testing or they go
- 1:25:50up north to frozen
- 1:25:52lakes one time per year
- 1:25:54And they have to conceal their cars
- 1:25:56because there are new models. Yeah, they
- 1:25:57don't want anybody to see it. Yeah
- 1:25:59so, um
- 1:26:01Uh folks walk and contacted us. Um a few
- 1:26:04three four years ago
- 1:26:06They tested it and they built a huge 4000
- 1:26:09square meter ring in in
- 1:26:11near uh, you know in germany
- 1:26:13And now they can test their cars on ice
- 1:26:16the whole year around and so the relation
- 1:26:18cycle is much faster and then
- 1:26:21after folks walk and bmw heard that they
- 1:26:23built the rink as well and then honda and
- 1:26:26and and uh chagware and and you know and
- 1:26:29on fort and so on so
- 1:26:31they all started to build
- 1:26:33uh their rinks with of course for testing
- 1:26:36and then they can do it
- 1:26:38in any shape they want too
- 1:26:39They don't have to do it as as a as a
- 1:26:41rink shape or a lake shape
- 1:26:42They can do it as a
- 1:26:43rectangle. They can do it as a square
- 1:26:45They can do it as an octagon if they want
- 1:26:48it all depends on what they want and what
- 1:26:49they're trying to test
- 1:26:50And whatever size they want too
- 1:26:52That's exactly it's incredible to think
- 1:26:54about how many uses we
- 1:26:57use for ice, you know
- 1:26:58Like like you said car manufacturers are
- 1:27:01using it to see how
- 1:27:02well their cars do on ice
- 1:27:03You know, you're you're looking at
- 1:27:05different hockey rinks and figure skaters
- 1:27:07and all these different types of of of
- 1:27:10usages
- 1:27:11That you wouldn't really think and the
- 1:27:14amount of ice that they have to create
- 1:27:17Uh traditionally, they have to create the
- 1:27:18amount of energy that goes
- 1:27:20into that you're taking this
- 1:27:23These these like small niches, right like
- 1:27:26it's a niche not necessarily small
- 1:27:27It's a pretty big. It's a pretty big
- 1:27:29niche, but and you're
- 1:27:30you're you have a problem
- 1:27:31How much energy does it take to create
- 1:27:33this obviously for climate change, but
- 1:27:35even for cost you're they're probably
- 1:27:36saving a lot of money
- 1:27:37Based on that especially from a
- 1:27:39maintenance perspective
- 1:27:41And you're solving a
- 1:27:42problem being like hey
- 1:27:43You can have ice all year
- 1:27:44round or wherever you'd like
- 1:27:45You don't have to go up north to go to a
- 1:27:47lake where it's dangerous and you can
- 1:27:48lose the car and you have to worry
- 1:27:49With you know, or you don't have to if
- 1:27:51you want to get better at hockey and
- 1:27:53you're you're not in a city
- 1:27:54That's that's winterize or
- 1:27:56gets gets a winter season
- 1:27:57You can do that
- 1:27:58You can be in like phoenix arizona and
- 1:28:01you can have a rink in your backyard and
- 1:28:02you can skate as much as you want
- 1:28:04And you can you know fire off shots or
- 1:28:06work on your stick handling
- 1:28:07In 100 degree weather if you
- 1:28:09want it's up to you, you know
- 1:28:10I think that's incredible
- 1:28:12to be able to to take that
- 1:28:15Um and be able to you know use it for the
- 1:28:18different applications
- 1:28:19um, yeah
- 1:28:21When when people like when like, you
- 1:28:23know, a lot of companies are trying to
- 1:28:25save energy. They're trying to be
- 1:28:27You know, quote unquote greener
- 1:28:29And some of them do a better job at
- 1:28:31others when they look at your ice and and
- 1:28:34when you sell them this this ice
- 1:28:36Do you mention that like do you mention
- 1:28:38the energy savings and how it's good for
- 1:28:41the planet and that could go towards?
- 1:28:43Like pr or it could go towards like look
- 1:28:46you're saving the city money or your
- 1:28:48whatever your wherever you're working
- 1:28:49Wherever you're building these you're
- 1:28:51saving the county the city the the region
- 1:28:53money by building this stuff
- 1:28:55Like how do you make that sale and do you
- 1:28:57focus on the the helping the climate and
- 1:29:00and not putting out more emissions?
- 1:29:04um
- 1:29:04It's a good question
- 1:29:06The our clients they come with different
- 1:29:09motives, but I mean that uh,
- 1:29:12The reason why we exist is that is
- 1:29:14climate change,
- 1:29:15right? We want to save uh,
- 1:29:17energy
- 1:29:18so and a lot of cities, you know now with
- 1:29:21the with the u.n. Uh
- 1:29:24global development goals for
- 1:29:26For climate change. Yeah, they have to
- 1:29:29find ways to to save energy and if their
- 1:29:32city rink they see
- 1:29:34wow, that's a lot of uh,
- 1:29:37kilowatt hours, you know
- 1:29:39Yeah, easy. We are no-brainer solution.
- 1:29:42Okay, but also I mean a lot of people
- 1:29:46comment they want to
- 1:29:47Be better at hockey a lot of eyesock it
- 1:29:50coach. They recommend who know us they
- 1:29:53recommend their kids
- 1:29:55Get the rink at home
- 1:29:56because you know the famous rule
- 1:29:5710 000 hours
- 1:30:00Uh of of practice makes
- 1:30:01a master. So if one kid
- 1:30:04Has has a glass pad at home the chance
- 1:30:07get into the inner shell is is probably
- 1:30:0950 times higher than
- 1:30:10The kid who doesn't right so that they
- 1:30:12can practice and so on so
- 1:30:14so the motives are really
- 1:30:15Uh different but sometimes it's it's
- 1:30:19maybe a hollywood studio
- 1:30:21They don't don't have time to do freeze
- 1:30:23and stuff and they want to fix something
- 1:30:25and they want our eyes or i give you
- 1:30:27another example
- 1:30:29Maybe you know, uh red bull crashed ice
- 1:30:31where they go down on on
- 1:30:33on ice skates, right? Yes
- 1:30:36So they had the world championship in the
- 1:30:39morse in france. Yep
- 1:30:41and the night before a guy an official
- 1:30:45from them uh contacted
- 1:30:46us and said hey, we have
- 1:30:48A problem. We cannot freeze the ice
- 1:30:51We have plans of the world championship
- 1:30:53and everything is organized a
- 1:30:55multi-million dollar event
- 1:30:57And we said no worries
- 1:30:59We packed a truck sent
- 1:31:02them our glass panels
- 1:31:04and in the early morning they installed
- 1:31:07Our our guys and and the world
- 1:31:09championship could could happen
- 1:31:11um
- 1:31:12inside of the problem and they saved a
- 1:31:14lot of energy on top, but they were not
- 1:31:17They they had a technical issue that was
- 1:31:19not they were not thinking about the
- 1:31:21environment at that moment, but of course
- 1:31:23Yeah, it comes
- 1:31:25together, right so
- 1:31:27So I mean that's it. There's so many uses
- 1:31:29for it and like I said before you don't
- 1:31:31realize how many uses there are
- 1:31:33Uh, it just it makes it makes sense, you
- 1:31:36know, and you you
- 1:31:37mentioned that uh, you know
- 1:31:38The the the 10,000 hours on the ice to
- 1:31:40get better and it's so true
- 1:31:42I mean wane gretzky probably the one of
- 1:31:45the greatest of all time
- 1:31:46If not the greatest hockey
- 1:31:47player of all time in the nhl
- 1:31:49I mean he grew up on a pond in the in his
- 1:31:51backyard and he was out there all the
- 1:31:53time and and I have to admit
- 1:31:54You know during covid our
- 1:31:56our league got shut down
- 1:31:57I I coached my my daughters and our
- 1:31:59league got shut down for a year
- 1:32:01And I was at the beginning of the year.
- 1:32:03We were trying to start and uh,
- 1:32:05There were a lot of rules and everything
- 1:32:06that were that were in place
- 1:32:07and it made it very difficult
- 1:32:08But we had a couple practices and I had
- 1:32:09one girl who was a really fast skater
- 1:32:12But she was new to hockey. She couldn't
- 1:32:14stop victor. Like she couldn't stop
- 1:32:16We were like this is getting dangerous
- 1:32:17It's like she's gonna hit the boards or
- 1:32:19run into somebody or something like that
- 1:32:21Because she'd skate full speed and she
- 1:32:23didn't have much of a shot
- 1:32:24It was her first year and this is house
- 1:32:25league. So they're developing and stuff
- 1:32:27And uh, and then we got shut down for
- 1:32:29covid, right? We tired
- 1:32:30just to stop a little bit
- 1:32:31But then we got shut down for covid.
- 1:32:33Well, I saw her the next year
- 1:32:35I was she was on my team again
- 1:32:36I was coaching her and you should have
- 1:32:38seen the shot that she had like she had a
- 1:32:40full-on she can hit the top corner
- 1:32:42No problem
- 1:32:43Uh, her skating was better her stopping
- 1:32:45was perfect. Like it got it got really
- 1:32:47good and I asked her I said
- 1:32:49What happened? Like how
- 1:32:50did you get so so good?
- 1:32:52And she's like I put
- 1:32:53a rink in my backyard
- 1:32:54It was really cold out that year and she
- 1:32:56goes I was out there every night. I was
- 1:32:58shooting like 50 pucks
- 1:33:00I was I was skating around I was like
- 1:33:02working on stopping and
- 1:33:04this is like when you do a pawn
- 1:33:06It's bumpy, right? Like if you do like if
- 1:33:08you do a rink in the backyard
- 1:33:10It's never going to be smooth unless you
- 1:33:11build like a zamboni type thing and you
- 1:33:13really take care of the ice
- 1:33:14It's not going to be perfect and we all
- 1:33:16know that and that's fine
- 1:33:17So she was even better when
- 1:33:19she was on the on the rink
- 1:33:20I can just imagine what would happen for
- 1:33:22a lot of these kids if they have this
- 1:33:25rink in their
- 1:33:26backyard or in their basement
- 1:33:27All year long where they don't have to
- 1:33:30worry about dressing up in the cold. They
- 1:33:31can put their skates
- 1:33:32on they can go around
- 1:33:34Shoot as much as they want practice, you
- 1:33:36know going through like
- 1:33:37like pylons and stuff like that
- 1:33:40They'd be amazing like the development
- 1:33:42would increase like 50 fold
- 1:33:44like you said and their
- 1:33:45chances of going further and
- 1:33:47And and playing better and playing at a
- 1:33:49higher level would be
- 1:33:50just unreal to do that
- 1:33:53It really takes hockey to it to a
- 1:33:56different level and this
- 1:33:57goes for figure skating
- 1:33:58It goes for whatever you want to do on
- 1:34:00the ice just pleasure skating
- 1:34:02Just just to have some fun just for uh,
- 1:34:03an activity in the backyard or or in the
- 1:34:06basement. I just think it's
- 1:34:08Absolutely phenomenal the fact that it
- 1:34:09saves energy and you
- 1:34:10don't have to worry about it
- 1:34:11Uh, even as a as a dad who like is really
- 1:34:14busy and having something in the backyard
- 1:34:16that I don't have to worry about like
- 1:34:18Maintaining that's a big that's like
- 1:34:19yeah, I would probably use it more than
- 1:34:21the kids, you know,
- 1:34:22i'd be on it all the time
- 1:34:24I wish sometimes it's it's uh, it's it
- 1:34:27sounds too good to be true
- 1:34:29Right. So right. Yeah, we have
- 1:34:32thousands of families
- 1:34:33have now already their
- 1:34:35uh guys are getting their home and and
- 1:34:37you hear fantastic stories of their kids
- 1:34:40improving and oh, yeah
- 1:34:42like just
- 1:34:43a game changer basically well and also it
- 1:34:45gets them moving too like you're thinking
- 1:34:48from a health perspective
- 1:34:49You know, especially now with the phones
- 1:34:51that like they are in and
- 1:34:52video games and everything
- 1:34:53You can just say go out and
- 1:34:55have some fun skating, you know
- 1:34:56And and and and just do
- 1:34:58that for an hour or two
- 1:35:00If you do that every day for an hour or
- 1:35:01two or just even a few days a week
- 1:35:03You're gonna be in great shape, you know,
- 1:35:05your cardiovascular system is gonna be
- 1:35:06fantastic because you're
- 1:35:07skating all the time, right?
- 1:35:08Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I just I
- 1:35:10just think it's phenomenal now
- 1:35:12You guys have developed how long has this
- 1:35:13business been in in in practice?
- 1:35:16So we started doing research and
- 1:35:18everything 12 years ago, but really
- 1:35:21Since like eight 10 years, you know,
- 1:35:24we're really pushing
- 1:35:26commercially and when did
- 1:35:27you sell your first like pad?
- 1:35:30Um, the first was already like 12 years
- 1:35:35ago when when you started like okay
- 1:35:37It's a science, but it was very slow
- 1:35:39start, you know, and for sure
- 1:35:41Yeah, and now with all the different like
- 1:35:43options and verticals that you have like
- 1:35:45card manufacturers and Hollywood studios
- 1:35:48And all this kind of stuff and hockey
- 1:35:50rigs and figure skating rigs. I mean,
- 1:35:51it's just it must be exploding
- 1:35:53Congratulations on that. That's that's
- 1:35:55Fantastic. I mean to go from
- 1:35:58you know, uh
- 1:36:00From a boy who like want to play in the
- 1:36:01forest all the time couldn't do it
- 1:36:03because of Chernobyl of all things
- 1:36:05You know a major a major event that could
- 1:36:08affect that affected a
- 1:36:09lot of people's health
- 1:36:10And this is well, hold on a second. I got
- 1:36:12to do something better for
- 1:36:13the planet now. You've got
- 1:36:15Glyce a company that is manufacturing,
- 1:36:17you know ice in a way
- 1:36:20Uh so people can enjoy it without having
- 1:36:22all the energy needs. I just think it's
- 1:36:24it's absolutely phenomenal
- 1:36:25And and I want to thank you victor for

- 1:38:17It was great to have you on love the
- 1:38:19different applications
- 1:38:19hollywood type of movies
- 1:38:21uh car manufacturers ice rinks or
- 1:38:25sporting and recreation
- 1:38:27It's it's all there. It's all there
- 1:38:29You don't realize how much ice that we
- 1:38:31have to make to allow
- 1:38:32all these things to happen
- 1:38:34And to do that with a almost a zero
- 1:38:37footprint is even better
- 1:38:39Now I didn't get into asking him about
- 1:38:42the manufacturing how that that takes and
- 1:38:44how much energy that takes
- 1:38:45But it just when you look at it as a
- 1:38:47difference of what's
- 1:38:48going on now with regular ice
- 1:38:50And how much energy it
- 1:38:51takes to maintain that ice
- 1:38:53It's it's a really
- 1:38:54it's a huge game changer
- 1:38:55So we are you know in for it when we're
- 1:38:58talking about how we're
- 1:39:00going to change the game
- 1:39:01For laying down ice pads and ice rinks in
- 1:39:04the future and having them in your home
- 1:39:07Phenomenal just absolutely phenomenal
- 1:39:08even just from a recreation and of being
- 1:39:11fit having a fitter lifestyle
- 1:39:13To be able to have stuff where you can go
- 1:39:14on this ice and you can skate around.
