- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Who am I not to forgive other people of their sins?
- 0:40It goes hand in hand. We're to be reconciled to God,
- 0:43but to be reconciled to one another.
- 0:46And for the life of me, I don't understand how we as human
- 0:49beings, probably because we're just still sinners and we were
- 0:52screwed up at times and fallen or whatever, messed up in our
- 0:55heads that someone does something to you that hurts you
- 0:58or wounds you or upsets you or betrays you.
- 1:01And then you want to cop an attitude.
- 1:03You want to get bitter and you want to get angry.
- 1:05And I'm not going to forgive them because they don't forgive
- 1:07me. When someone causes you pain,
- 1:10whether it's physical or emotional, it's pretty common to
- 1:13feel that urge to retaliate. Having to forgive someone isn't
- 1:17quite as simple as it seems, but have you ever thought about how
- 1:21your Creator chose to forgive you by allowing His only Son to
- 1:26suffer on your behalf? Today, Pastor Clark invites you
- 1:30to open your heart to the power of forgiveness.
- 1:33God decided to reach out and mend things with you because of
- 1:36his deep love for you. Can you do the same with others
- 1:41now? Here's Pastor Clark in the book
- 1:43of Acts Chapter 13 with today's edition of Living Waters of
- 1:47Grace. The focus of these things that
- 1:50we're looking at here are emphasizing what God's done, the
- 1:56focus on what God does. 11 times that God chose the fathers, He
- 2:02made the people great. He led them out of Egypt.
- 2:05He put up with them in the wilderness.
- 2:08He destined 7 nations in the land to have their own space in
- 2:12Canaan. He gave them land as an
- 2:14inheritance. God gave them judges, he gave
- 2:17them Saul, he raised up David. God brought Israel a savior
- 2:21Jesus as he promised, and a prophet John who said he wasn't
- 2:25worthy. This remarkable.
- 2:27And so we continue in verse 26, men and brethren, this is Paul
- 2:32again preaching sons of the family of Abraham.
- 2:36They were proud that they were descendants of Abraham.
- 2:39And you remember what Paul said, that God could raise up the
- 2:43stones to give praise to God. There was nothing special in the
- 2:46sense or entitlement of being a child of Abraham.
- 2:50It didn't automatically guarantee you salvation unless
- 2:53you believed so. There was really no distinction
- 2:56between a Jewish person and a Gentile person in God's eyes.
- 3:00He came first to his own. The Bible says his own received
- 3:04him not, but his picture in his vision of humanity was to be a
- 3:08savior for the whole world and all people, men and brother and
- 3:12sons of the family of Abraham and those among you who fear
- 3:15God, this is the Gentiles to you.
- 3:18The word of this salvation has been sent for those who dwell in
- 3:24Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him,
- 3:28nor even the voices of the prophets which are read every
- 3:30Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him.
- 3:34And through and though they found no cause for death in Him,
- 3:37they asked Pilate that he should be put to death.
- 3:41Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him,
- 3:44they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
- 3:47But God raised him from the dead, and he was seen by many as
- 3:51he was seen for many days by those who came up with him from
- 3:55Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses to the people.
- 4:00So the ignorance of the nation of Israel, they're studying the
- 4:05law and the prophets every Saturday.
- 4:08Why was it that they couldn't understand or know him?
- 4:14That's the mystery. God bless you.
- 4:17That's the mystery. You can be here today hearing
- 4:19the Word and maybe half hearing it, or your mind's wandering, or
- 4:23maybe you're here and I don't have a clue what this guy's
- 4:25talking about. That was them.
- 4:28And there are people like that every Sunday in churches all
- 4:31around the world that can be in a building and hearing the
- 4:34truth, but they're really not hearing it unless God gives us
- 4:37ears to hear and eyes to see, right?
- 4:40That's the mystery. It only can happen through the
- 4:43work of the Holy Spirit. And when Jesus came, I think one
- 4:48of the issues that Israel had was they were anticipating this
- 4:52world king and all this majesty and all this.
- 4:54He came as a humble servant. Matter of fact, it tells us in
- 4:58Philippians 2, He made himself of no reputation.
- 5:02He didn't have horns and trumpets blowing about His
- 5:06greatness and His deity and that He's truly God Incarnate in the
- 5:09flesh, the one that they were to receive and believe on.
- 5:14He came humble and just did His ministry, and many did follow
- 5:18and believe and become saved, but the majority of people
- 5:23didn't. And to this day the Bible says
- 5:26that the road that leads the life is narrow and few there
- 5:29aren't find it. But the road that leads the
- 5:31destruction is broad and many are on that path.
- 5:34And so they were so compelled against His message that they
- 5:40felt it was their responsibility to have him crucified.
- 5:45And so they asked Pilate in verse 28 that he should be put
- 5:48to death. Now, when you think about these
- 5:51things, this religious tradition that these people were so
- 5:57enamored by and so into, they, they thought they were
- 6:02righteous. The religious people thought
- 6:04they were right, righteous. I mean, there's churches today,
- 6:07guys, and some of you have come from them guys and gals that
- 6:10you, you know, you look back, you say, I never heard anything
- 6:13like this. I heard try to be good, do
- 6:16better, you know, every week and a guilt trip, you know, and I'd
- 6:19come and I know like I'm failing and this just isn't working.
- 6:23And that's what stopped me from going to church as a young man.
- 6:26I just this is just impossible. This does not make sense.
- 6:30Who can live this way because I was compelled to live away
- 6:33opposite of what the Bible teaches because of my sin.
- 6:37It tells us a little bit about our condition as Paul's
- 6:40preaching this gospel. Keep in mind that the book of
- 6:43Romans wasn't written yet, but it would be written based upon
- 6:47these texts in this context of what he's preaching about in the
- 6:51book of the Acts in Romans chapter 3.
- 6:55Many of you familiar with this, but I want to read it for those
- 6:58of you who may not be familiar with it, It tells us in verse
- 7:0321. But now the righteousness of God
- 7:07apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the law and
- 7:09the prophets, even the righteousness of God through
- 7:12faith in Jesus Christ to all and all who will believe.
- 7:16So that's taken basically right from what he's preaching in Acts
- 7:21right now, that no one, including Jewish people, can be
- 7:26justified by following the 10 commandments.
- 7:30It's not that we disrespect the 10 commandments or don't think
- 7:33they're valid. They're there's consequences of
- 7:35breaking the law and we all know what it is.
- 7:38But every one of us have broken the law, right?
- 7:41Every one of us. And, and Paul's clarifying to
- 7:44them as people who were conditioned to think they had to
- 7:48be perfect, that they cannot be justified by the law.
- 7:54And he said it's through faith in Jesus Christ that we are
- 7:58justified to all and all who believe, for there is no
- 8:02difference for all of sin and fallen short of the glory of
- 8:04God. So everybody, you know,
- 8:07including yourself, have fallen short of God's glory.
- 8:11We have not met his perfect standard, which is perfection.
- 8:16So the whole world is guilty before God.
- 8:20And then he says we're the good news in the next section.
- 8:24We're being justified freely by his grace through the
- 8:28redemption. It is in Christ Jesus.
- 8:30So there's no payment. There's no work that you and I
- 8:34have to do. There's nothing we could do good
- 8:37enough to to save ourselves. This is completely a gift of God
- 8:42for each of us who would receive it.
- 8:45Now we get it because we've received it.
- 8:48Maybe you're here today and you've never received it.
- 8:50So the good news is you can receive this gift of being saved
- 8:56by his grace from your sin. Meaning there's no need for
- 9:00guilt or regret or feeling condemned or unworthy.
- 9:05But God accepts you as you are, a Sinner, which we all are, but
- 9:11a Sinner who needs either to be saved by grace or judged one day
- 9:15because they refused to come to Christ.
- 9:18And so it says that God set forth as a propitiation, A
- 9:22sacrifice by his blood through faith to demonstrate His
- 9:26righteousness. Because of his forbearance, God
- 9:28has passed over the sins that were previously committed to
- 9:32demonstrate at the present time as righteousness that He might
- 9:35be just and a justifier, the one who has faith in Jesus Christ.
- 9:40So the law is God's righteous standard, and the law demands
- 9:43100% adherence and obedience, which is impossible for any of
- 9:49us to do, to be accepted by God based upon our own
- 9:53righteousness. And so Paul's message was a new
- 9:56message to all these people. They had never heard this in the
- 9:59synagogue ever. And maybe some of you have never
- 10:02heard this either. I don't know, but today this is
- 10:06not being proclaimed in most places that call themselves
- 10:09churches. Someone told me a little earlier
- 10:12today, it's better to be in a church that feeds you than makes
- 10:15you feel good. But the good news is another
- 10:19person said, well, can we have both?
- 10:21Yeah, we can. If we hear the word and we do it
- 10:24and we listen and we follow on, we believe, you know, God bless
- 10:28us, doesn't he? But the good news is that God
- 10:31accepts us in because of Jesus. He changes our lives and we also
- 10:36see others this way. If God has been so good to me to
- 10:40reconcile me to himself and forgive me all my sins, who am I
- 10:44not to forgive other people of their sins?
- 10:47It goes hand in hand. We're to be reconciled to God,
- 10:50but to be reconciled to one another.
- 10:53And for the life of me, I don't understand how we as human
- 10:56beings, probably because we're just still sinners and we were
- 10:59screwed up at times and fallen or whatever, messed up in our
- 11:02heads that someone does something to you that hurts you
- 11:05or wounds you or upsets you or betrays you.
- 11:08And then you want to cop an attitude.
- 11:10You want to get bitter and you want to get angry.
- 11:12And I'm not going to forgive them because they don't forgive
- 11:15me. And so we basically, you know,
- 11:18invalidate not from our salvation point of view, but
- 11:21from our relation point of view, the power of the gospel that can
- 11:26make us in love with one another and in love with God no matter
- 11:30what. Forgiving 70 * 7 getting over
- 11:34stuff that bothers us and not letting it like mess with our,
- 11:38our calm, the peace of God. And so Jesus said, by this way
- 11:44of living, this love, this way of living, people will know
- 11:48you're my disciples, right? The only way they're going to
- 11:51know we belong to the Lord isn't by all the stuff we say.
- 11:57But how do we love each other? That's the most important thing,
- 12:00isn't it? How do we love each other?
- 12:03How do we forgive each other? And so this beauty of this
- 12:09truth, I think in Ephesians 432 it says be kind, tender hearted,
- 12:16forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ's sake, I've
- 12:20forgiven you. So when I think about all that
- 12:23the Lord has done to forgive me, who am I to not forgive other
- 12:29people? This word justified means to
- 12:33have our sins forgiven in such a way.
- 12:35That's God's honor and His Holiness and integrity are
- 12:38presented and preserved by it. God doesn't ignore our sins.
- 12:42He didn't say, oh, I forgive you, no big deal, don't worry
- 12:45about it. But he does in a way when he
- 12:48puts our sin on Jesus Christ, he says, Clark, don't worry about
- 12:53what you've done in the sins you've committed, because I've
- 12:56forgiven you through the perfection of the one who lived
- 13:00the law 100%, who shed his blood and died for you.
- 13:04And my wrath and my anger that really should be poured out upon
- 13:07you was placed on my son Jesus Christ.
- 13:12Isn't that awesome? He accepts us and forgives us
- 13:17because of what Jesus has done for us.
- 13:20God's justice is an attribute. He's a holy God.
- 13:23He says without holiness, no man will see the Lord.
- 13:26It's not your holiness that presents you acceptable to God.
- 13:31It tells us in Ephesians that we're accepted in the beloved
- 13:34holy and without blame. You and I are accepted in the
- 13:37person of Jesus Christ being holy and without blame.
- 13:41We'll never be accepted in ourselves as being holy and
- 13:44without blame. It's in him.
- 13:47It's completely in Him. And so God found a way to lay
- 13:52the guilt and sins of our lives upon Jesus.
- 13:56Sin must be judged. Sin must be atoned for.
- 14:00There's a reparation for an offence.
- 14:03The satisfaction of God's perfect justice is the fact that
- 14:08there's no compromise for sin that had to be paid for and God
- 14:12only could do it through Christ. God forgave you and me through
- 14:16the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
- 14:19That's why Jesus said, and we're called bigots and close minded
- 14:23people because we believe this because there is no other way.
- 14:27Jesus said I am the way, I am the truth.
- 14:30I am the life. No man comes to the Father but
- 14:33through me. The only way you can be forgiven
- 14:36and be acceptable to your creator God is through what I've
- 14:40done for you. That's what he's saying and
- 14:42everybody says, well why can't there be another way there?
- 14:45There can't be anybody else but Jesus that can die for you and
- 14:49forgive you because He's God Incarnate.
- 14:53He's gone in the flesh, He's perfect, He's the perfect
- 14:56sacrifice. Buddha, Krishna, all these other
- 15:00people, they might have been nice people, but they can't
- 15:03atone for your sin because they're sinful people.
- 15:06And so in Acts 412, if you skip over in your Bible to the left,
- 15:11Acts 412, this clarifies it. It says the stone in verse 11,
- 15:17which was rejected by you builders.
- 15:19He's talking about Israel and the nation of Israel, which has
- 15:22become the chief cornerstone, Jesus as the chief cornerstone.
- 15:26They rejected him trying to build a ministry and a synagogue
- 15:31and whatever without the core person, Jesus Christ.
- 15:37And then it says, nor is there salvation in any other.
- 15:41For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which
- 15:46we must be saved. Amen.
- 15:49There is no other name. That's why we're called to
- 15:53proclaim Christ. That's where we're what we're
- 15:55called to teach the Word of God, the whole council, the word of
- 16:00God, not part of it, but every verse of it so that people can
- 16:05hear. And the picture of justification
- 16:08is full acceptance. God fully accepts you as you are
- 16:13because you're in Christ. And so today you and I have a
- 16:17choice. We can accept the death of the
- 16:18Lord Jesus on our behalf and his life that he gives to us, and we
- 16:25can be free from all the things that we've done and messed up
- 16:29with, which are ton. I know mine have been a ton from
- 16:34I, I can be freed. You can be freed from all these
- 16:36things. God's love is poured out upon us
- 16:40and begins to heal our scars, our hurt, our anguish, our
- 16:45broken lies, and we begin to be more whole And the basis of
- 16:50being justified by faith. Amen.
- 16:53And justification is not a past tense concept.
- 16:59I'm justified yesterday, I'm justified today, and I'm
- 17:04justified tomorrow, as you are too.
- 17:08Because we still sin. We still make mistakes, we still
- 17:12act in ways or say things that we shouldn't think, things we
- 17:15shouldn't think. And this atoning blood that
- 17:19keeps us pure and justified and forgiving and cleanse is present
- 17:25tense. If we confess our sins, He is
- 17:30faithful and just to forgive us of our sins, isn't He?
- 17:34And to cleanse us from all our unrighteousness.
- 17:38Anybody still have unrighteousness in your life?
- 17:41Yeah, we all do, right? Aren't you glad that the blood
- 17:44and never loses its power and and and the mistakes aren't to
- 17:48condemn us. We we know where we go to get
- 17:51free from this stuff so that we're not disturbed in our heart
- 17:56and our minds by stuff that we can't fix or change.
- 18:00It's happened. How wonderful, how marvelous
- 18:05what our Savior's done for us. So when all these things have
- 18:09been fulfilled, in verse 29, it was written concerning him.
- 18:13They took him down from the tree, laid him in a tongue.
- 18:15God raised him from the dead. Acts 1331.
- 18:19He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from
- 18:23Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people.
- 18:26And we declare to you glad tidings that promise which is
- 18:29made to the Father's. God has fulfilled this for us,
- 18:32their children, in that He has raised up Jesus, as it is
- 18:36written in the second Psalm. You are my Son today I've
- 18:39begotten you this again, the prophecies that have been
- 18:42fulfilled by Jesus and that he raised him up from the dead.
- 18:45No more to return to corruption. He spoke and I will give you the
- 18:49sure mercies of David. Therefore he also says in
- 18:52another Psalm, you will not allow your holy one to see
- 18:55corruption. Jesus when he was put in the
- 18:57tomb body didn't decompose, wasn't corrupt.
- 19:00You put me or you in the in the grave and go by a week later and
- 19:04dig it up. Guess what the worms, the ants,
- 19:06everything's all over. It's I don't want to gross you
- 19:08out, but it's like starting to like this deteriorate and
- 19:11eventually it's just nothing but bones there.
- 19:14OK, Christ didn't have to go through that.
- 19:18And because He didn't have to go through that, when we die, we
- 19:21don't stay in that grave, in that body.
- 19:24We are absent in the body, and we're present with the Lord for
- 19:28all eternity. For David, after he served his
- 19:32own generation, by the will of God, he fell asleep.
- 19:35Great leader, loved God, God used him, but he died like we
- 19:38all do. He was buried with his father's.
- 19:40His body saw corruption, but he whom God raised up saw no
- 19:44corruption. Therefore let it be known to
- 19:46you, brethren, that through this man is preached to you the
- 19:50forgiveness of sins. And by him everyone who believes
- 19:54is justified from all things from which you could not be
- 19:57justified by the Law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest what has
- 20:02been spoken and the prophets come upon you, behold, you
- 20:05despisers marvel and perish. For I work a work in your days,
- 20:09a work which you will by no means believe, though one word
- 20:12He declare it to you. So this beauty here of the
- 20:18message that we're hearing today was so powerful when it was
- 20:23first preached in the synagogue. Over 2000 years ago.
- 20:26It's the same message that is powerful today, that can change
- 20:30and save lives. Amen.
- 20:33It can completely give people a brand new start, a fresh start
- 20:38with God. I preached this message before I
- 20:41went away on vacation and I felt I needed to preach it again
- 20:47because I find that in my own life at times I forget the
- 20:54basics. The basics.
- 20:57Jesus loves me. This I know, for the Bible tells
- 21:01me so. For God so loved this world that
- 21:04he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him
- 21:09should not perish, but have everlasting life.
- 21:12For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the
- 21:15world, that that the world through him might be saved.
- 21:19The more I meditate on these things personally, my wife and
- 21:24I, as we talk about this stuff and pray about it and endeavor
- 21:28to live it out, I'm made more and more aware of how powerful
- 21:36and how special this message is that God has granted to us to
- 21:42experience on a daily basis. No condemnation, no guilt, no
- 21:49matter what people will try to throw on you at times, you don't
- 21:52have to receive that because God doesn't throw that on you, does
- 21:55He? When people say hurtful things
- 21:58or do mean things to you, or slander you, or call you all
- 22:02kind of whatever, May God give us grace to remind ourselves
- 22:08that God never says that about us.
- 22:11He never thinks that way about us.
- 22:14Each of us are the apple of His eye.
- 22:15He loves us with and everlasting love.
- 22:18He's redeemed us. He paid for us with His precious
- 22:21blood, and He says to you and me that we were worth saving.
- 22:28He gave it all for us because He saw something in us that none of
- 22:33us can see in ourselves. He sees value, He sees His
- 22:38likeness, He sees His creation, and He gave it all that He might
- 22:45redeem this creation and bring broken people away from
- 22:49desolation, bring people that hearts are broken back to
- 22:53healing, bring people who have been destroyed by a life of sin
- 22:58to a new life of having victory and power over sin, becoming new
- 23:04creations in Christ, new creatures in Christ.
- 23:08We no longer have to live under the enslavement of the power of
- 23:12sin. That's the gospel, isn't it?
- 23:16That's what we need to continually be reminded of every
- 23:19time we gather that this is who our God is and how great he is,
- 23:25and leave with our shoulders lifted, our heads looking up and
- 23:31having hope and joy for tomorrow in a world that seems to be
- 23:38decaying and falling apart. The good news is you aren't
- 23:41decaying and falling apart, are you?
- 23:43Are you getting older? Yeah, that looks like a decay,
- 23:47right? But you know the best is yet to
- 23:51come for us, right? The best is yet to come for us.
- 23:54So be encouraged. Thanks for joining us on today's
- 23:58edition of Living Waters of Grace, a ministry of Calvary
- 24:02Chapel, Westmoreland. Today, Pastor Clark is teaching
- 24:05about the Book of Acts, And as we learn more about Acts, it
- 24:09becomes clear that the early church didn't miss a single
- 24:12opportunity to share the Gospel. In nearly every chapter, you see
- 24:16apostles like Peter and Paul stepping into conversations,
