- 0:041 conference this week not to talk about nuclear weapons or
- 0:08climate change or trade deals. Talk about space junk.
- 0:11The Saudi Space Agency hosted the second annual space debris
- 0:15conference. If you want to sign.
- 0:16The commercial space industry is actually growing up.
- 0:19This is the time the gold rush phase, launch fast, grab your
- 0:23orbit, figure out the mess later is giving way to something more
- 0:27sobering. A global reckoning with what
- 0:29we've left behind up there in the companies building mega
- 0:32constellations like Starlink. They are the elephant in the
- 0:35room. So today I want to walk through
- 0:37these stories that taken together paint a picture of
- 0:40where Space Flight is right now. We've got the debris problem
- 0:43demanding attention. We've got NASA pushing ahead
- 0:46with Artemis 2 getting ready to send humans around the moon.
- 0:49And we've got nuclear propulsion tests that could reshape how we
- 0:53think about deep space travel entirely.
- 0:56Growth and accountability happen at the same time.
- 0:58And that's what a maturing industry looks like.
- 1:01That's what the Space Flight industry looks like right now.
- 1:04We're going to get into that right after this very short
- 1:07break. So let's start with this debris
- 1:10conference. The numbers here are massive. 75
- 1:14countries showed up. The event was organized by the
- 1:17Saudi Space Agency, but it had backing from the United Nations
- 1:20Office for Outer Space Affairs in partnership with the
- 1:24International Telecommunication Union.
- 1:27Here's what Artie Holimany, the director of UNOOSA, said.
- 1:33Global cooperation among international organizations,
- 1:36governments, industry and academia in addressing space
- 1:39debris challenges is no longer merely A desirable objective is
- 1:43become an absolute necessity. She also said that leading space
- 1:48faring nations must develop concrete plans to address
- 1:51accumulated legacy debris. Legacy debris is a polite way of
- 1:56saying the stuff we've been leaving up there for decades.
- 1:59All the junk. Now why does all this matter
- 2:02though? The International
- 2:03Telecommunication Union manages satellite orbit allocations.
- 2:07They're the people who coordinate who gets to park
- 2:10where in space. When they show up at a debris
- 2:14conference, signals that orbit management and debris are now in
- 2:18the same conversation. They were kind of a side thing.
- 2:21That debris thing was for a while, but now it's all coming
- 2:24together. Can't talk about where new
- 2:25satellites go without talking about what's already cluttering
- 2:29up those lanes. Now.
- 2:31Space is huge. And here's where SpaceX comes
- 2:34into the picture, even though they weren't mentioned by name.
- 2:38Starlink has thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit.
- 2:41They want to get hundreds of thousands into low Earth orbit.
- 2:44Thousands more are planned for the next few years.
- 2:47Amazon's working on their own consolation.
- 2:49China is doing the same thing. It's getting uncomfortable up
- 2:53there really fast. And more objects mean more
- 2:56collision risk. If something happens to 1
- 2:59satellite, if one SpaceX Starlink satellite breaks, a
- 3:04piece from that Starlink satellite could destroy numerous
- 3:07satellites. Could be a chain reaction.
- 3:09More collisions equal more debris, and more debris means
- 3:13more collision risk. It's a feedback loop that keeps
- 3:16people up at night From the UNOOSA.
- 3:20They also featured something called the Debris Solver
- 3:24Competition at that conference, 20 projects showcasing
- 3:29innovative solutions for actually cleaning up space junk.
- 3:33We're not just wringing our hands with the problem, just
- 3:36saying like, hey, there's debris up there.
- 3:38Who cares? It's space.
- 3:39It's not down here. There's engineers and people
- 3:43that want to make money, entrepreneurs actively working
- 3:46on fixes for this. They want to make Nets,
- 3:50harpoons, there's lasers, robotic arms.
- 3:53If there's space junk, there's going to be money to be made.
- 3:58It's like having a garbage person pick up your garbage in
- 4:01front of your house. There's somebody there that does
- 4:03that. There's a business that makes a
- 4:05lot of money doing garbage pickup.
- 4:07That's what these entrepreneurs want to do too.
- 4:09They want to pick up the garbage in space.
- 4:11They want to haul it someplace else.
- 4:13So some of these ideas sound crazy, right?
- 4:17Sound like science fiction, But so did Spacex's reusable rockets
- 4:22for about 10 years ago. Now, something else crazy is
- 4:25that I've been digging into the analytics of the show, and 37%
- 4:28of you are following the channel and I am forever grateful for

- 4:37Sometimes you listen to a show you're not subscribed.
- 4:39Sometimes you listen to a few episodes and it's cool, but
- 4:42eventually you do come around and hit the subscribe button.
- 4:45That's what I do all the time. I'd listen to a show four or
- 4:47five times and I'm like, oh wait, I should have subscribed.

- 4:51Just comes into my feed and that's going to help us out

- 5:05So there's a reckoning going on too.
- 5:09There's an execution with what NASA is actually doing right now
- 5:15about this. Artemis 2 is moving forward very
- 5:18soon. February, NASA announced they're
- 5:21pushing ahead with what's called a wet dress rehearsal for the
- 5:23mission. And a wet dress rehearsal is
- 5:26essentially a full simulation of launch day.
- 5:29You load the rocket with propellants, that's the wet
- 5:31part, Run through the entire countdown sequence and stop just
- 5:36before ignition. They do everything they need to
- 5:38do before launch, and then they just don't launch the rocket.
- 5:41It's how you find problems before they become catastrophic.
- 5:44If there's any leaks, they find them before the actual launch
- 5:47day. This is huge because Artemis 2
- 5:50is the mission that sends humans around the moon for the first
- 5:52time since Apollo 4 astronauts. A loop around the far side of
- 5:57the moon and the first crude flight of the Space Launch
- 5:59System and Orion capsule working together.
- 6:03And that's after Artemis 1 proved the hardware could make
- 6:05the trip on crude. This is the next step.
- 6:07And then Artemis 3 should have people stepping on the moon's
- 6:12surface again. Now, there's also a Utah
- 6:15connection worth mentioning here.
- 6:17The solid rocket boosters, the power SLS during liftoff are
- 6:20manufactured there. Utah has been part of NASA's
- 6:24human spaceflight story since the space shuttle days.
- 6:27So we talked about Artemis. We're talking about supply
- 6:29chains and expertise that span across the country, and the
- 6:33University of North Dakota is also involved in supporting this
- 6:37mission. When you see universities
- 6:39embedded in NASA programs, it's something about the depth of
- 6:43those efforts. Together, the university and
- 6:46NASA working hand in hand, it's huge.
- 6:48They're not just building rockets, though.
- 6:50They're working all across the nation, pulling in academic
- 6:54research, industry partners in multiple states.
- 6:58So the Artemis 2 mission needs to get through the orbit that
- 7:04the debris fields are in now. They will plan that properly so
- 7:09nobody gets hurt. But the Artemis missions going
- 7:12forward will need to clean up some of this garbage.
- 7:18Artemis 2 may face delays if the wet dress rehearsal doesn't work
- 7:22out as planned. The heat shield issues from
- 7:24Artemis 1 took a lot longer to resolve than anybody wanted to
- 7:28talk about. In getting through this
- 7:30rehearsal successfully would be signal that the program is way
- 7:34back on track. So let's go beyond the moon
- 7:37here. NASA is testing advances in
- 7:40space nuclear propulsion. This all matters because it's
- 7:44all tied into the orbit of all the space debris.
- 7:49This is going to be a technology that could genuinely change the
- 7:53game for deep space exploration. Chemical rockets are great for
- 7:57getting off Earth. They produce tremendous thrust,
- 8:01but once you're out in space, they're inefficient for long
- 8:05journeys. You burn through fuel really
- 8:07fast and you can only carry so much of it.
- 8:11And once that fuel is gone, the fuel is gone.
- 8:13You can't get more. Nuclear propulsion is a whole
- 8:19different beast. Nuclear thermal rockets heat
- 8:22propellant to extreme temperatures using a reactor,
- 8:25generating far more efficiency per unit of fuel.
- 8:29And the result of that is that you could cut the transit time
- 8:32to Mars significantly. Some estimates suggest getting
- 8:35there in three to four months instead of 7 to 9.
- 8:39That's huge for safety. Less time in transit means less
- 8:43radiation exposure for astronauts.
- 8:45Fewer things can go wrong if you shorten the time frame.
- 8:50And NASA has been researching this for years, but recent tests
- 8:53suggest real progress there. And it's not going to be ready
- 8:57next year. But we might be talking about it
- 9:01getting ready for a Mars mission that are currently on the
- 9:04drawing board sometime in the 20 thirties.
- 9:07So this is the context here. We're serious about becoming a
- 9:10multi planetary species, which is something both NASA and
- 9:14SpaceX talk about constantly. We need propulsion systems that
- 9:17can handle the distances involved.
- 9:21Chemical rockets can get us to the moon.
- 9:23Nuclear propulsion might be what gets us to Mars and beyond any
- 9:27practical time frame. Now we have to talk about one
- 9:31more thing. Rocket Lab, a small company
- 9:35that's sort of pseudo competitor to SpaceX, their Neutron rocket
- 9:41experienced a test failure recently.
- 9:43We don't have all the details yet, but analysis seems to be
- 9:46maintaining confidence in the company despite the set back.
- 9:50Because they're going to fix it. It's notable because Rocket Lab
- 9:54is one of the few companies seriously competing against
- 9:57SpaceX in the medium lift market.
- 9:59Neutron is their answer to Falcon 9.
- 10:02But you know, test failures. They're part of the rocket
- 10:05development programs. SpaceX blew up plenty of
- 10:08prototypes on the way to success.
- 10:10And now look at the Falcon 9. Hundreds of launches, hundreds
- 10:13of landings. The question is always whether a
- 10:15company can learn from the failure and move on.
- 10:18And Rocket Lab has had a strong track record with their smaller
- 10:21Electron rocket, so I'm not going to count them out.
- 10:24But this business is hard, and they will learn from their
- 10:28mistakes and they'll move on from it.
- 10:30So where does this all tie together?
- 10:33The same week that 75 countries gathered to talk about cleaning
- 10:36up Earth orbit, NASA was testing the nuclear engines and
- 10:40preparing to send humans back to the moon.
- 10:44This is progress, and it's going to be a little bit longer, but
- 10:47we're going to get there. And they're simultaneously
- 10:50pushing boundaries and dealing with consequences the same exact
- 10:54time. The early years of any industry
- 10:57are about proving the tech that actually works, and now the
- 11:01middle years are scaling it, and we're heading into the later
- 11:06years of this. So they need to sustain it.
- 11:11Commercial spaceflight is entering that third phase.
- 11:14The launches will keep coming. Hundreds of SpaceX Starlink
- 11:18flights will happen every year. Starship will fly and it'll take
- 11:23thousands of Starlinks into orbit, amongst other things.
- 11:27Starlink will grow, but so will the other competitors, and so
- 11:31will the conversations about responsibility.
- 11:33Question for SpaceX and every other player in the industry is
- 11:37whether they can keep doing this and keep launching without
- 11:41somebody there to clean up their mess and who's going to pay
- 11:44those people in those jobs to clean up this mess?
- 11:48We're going to have to find that out in the future.
- 11:50Is it going to be the countries or will the will the companies
- 11:54be taxed for clean up over the time that they have their
- 11:59satellites in orbit?
