- 0:09more ease. Make your dream a reality of
- 0:11getting into flight. Listen in as you hear some of
- 0:13the stories of the people getting there and come join the
- 0:15Flight Prep group. Hey you guys, welcome to episode
- 0:18110. I wanted to do something a
- 0:21little bit different this week. I've been thinking about all of
- 0:24you guys who want to get into flight in the last 24 hours and
- 0:26how I wanted to kind of share this message with you.
- 0:28But I have a special message plan for you guys this week.
- 0:33I met with the Flight Prep Academy yesterday.
- 0:36We. Have our weekly group calls
- 0:38every Tuesdays. And we did in a particular
- 0:41evaluation on a flight interview that someone just recently did
- 0:46into the group. And I encourage every single
- 0:48person who's in my. Group to evaluate.
- 0:50Every interaction that they have with flight companies and every
- 0:53single flight interview that they have.
- 0:55And she had just recently done this interview and so it was
- 0:58fresh in her mind. And I always talk about in these
- 1:01evaluations. What went well, what didn't go?
- 1:03Well, what do you want to do differently?
- 1:04And we kind of. Evaluate each of.
- 1:07Her interviews like that, so we got into delving in into the
- 1:12interview and talking specifically about.
- 1:14It what she felt like went well, what she felt like.
- 1:17Didn't go well and as we were doing this evaluation, we
- 1:21discovered. That she was really just.
- 1:25Giving answers based on what? She thought the.
- 1:28People on the panel interview wanted to hear, which is
- 1:31something that is so common that I see people doing, is
- 1:37continuing to talk more or continuing to second guess their
- 1:41clinical scenarios by seeing if the people interviewing are
- 1:45nodding their head or smiling or connecting or saying something
- 1:49back to them and what I shared with her.
- 1:52Is that if you're a? Really good panel interviewee on
- 1:56a flight panel interview you will not show.
- 1:59How you're, how you're. Thinking, in fact, I've had.
- 2:03A lot of people who sat. In flight interviews and both in
- 2:06critical care interviews where. They were really good.
- 2:11At interviewing and. They tried to.
- 2:13Throw the person off. They tried to.
- 2:16Maybe. Look like they were.
- 2:18Writing or eating or not paying attention because they really
- 2:22wanted to see. How that particular?
- 2:24Person interviewing would handle it under the pressure and I'm
- 2:28not saying that all people are doing this, but I am saying that
- 2:31what you. Really.
- 2:32Really want to do in these flight interviews is you want to
- 2:36stay. Out of their head.
- 2:38And stay into yours. And I know that this sounds like
- 2:41such a simple concept, but it's so hard to do and I saw so many
- 2:45people in flight interviews and I coach so many.
- 2:47People currently who? Have a hard time with that and
- 2:52so I asked her once we discovered that she was doing
- 2:55that once we discovered that she.
- 2:56Felt like. The areas that didn't go well
- 2:58were the ones that she wasn't getting connection back or
- 3:00response back from the people interviewing her.
- 3:03And I asked her. I said I'm curious.
- 3:06Do you? Think that.
- 3:08You were stuck. In what they wanted to hear
- 3:11versus thinking about what you wanted to express.
- 3:14And she said 100%. And I said, OK, this is.
- 3:17So valuable. Because this is an easy fix.
- 3:20We can fix this. And I said when you are stuck in
- 3:24their head and not in yours, what are you not doing?
- 3:27And she said, I'm not being true to myself.
- 3:29And I said. To be true to yourself.
- 3:32In a flight interview, what do you have to be willing to feel?
- 3:34And she said vulnerable. And you could hear a needle drop
- 3:39on the coaching call. Vulnerability, you guys, this is
- 3:44the thing that you need to take into flight interviews.
- 3:48This is a thing that no one else is teaching.
- 3:50And I this is like, I think what really sets my program aside is
- 3:54how can you be vulnerable in these interviews?
- 3:57How can you? Show them who you are.
- 3:59What you value? The team player.
- 4:01You are it. Requires a certain level of
- 4:04vulnerability in these flight interviews, but vulnerability
- 4:08is. Hard.
- 4:09It sounds so simple, but it. Creates a.
- 4:11Level of discomfort for us and that's hard for people to tap
- 4:15into, but what I. Shared with her.
- 4:17Is that if you could tap into vulnerability?
- 4:19If you could allow yourself to just showcase who you.
- 4:22Are in these interviews. That these.
- 4:24Positions will open up for you. That they will see right through
- 4:29you and be able to see how. Authentic you are and the team
- 4:33player you are, and they will welcome you to their team.
- 4:36But here's the kicker you guys like this is what I told.
- 4:39Her with the rest of the coaching, I said.
- 4:42This is the kicker, I said. Guess how your.
- 4:46Patients are feeling, and I said they are feeling vulnerable too.
- 4:54So when you. Teach yourself to be.
- 4:57Vulnerable to open yourself up to the discomfort of learning
- 5:00new things to say when you don't know something.
- 5:03To communicate with your patients and families in a
- 5:06deeper way To connect with them on the worst day of.
- 5:08Their life. You are teaching.
- 5:10Yourself. How to?
- 5:12Help your patients on the. Worst days because.
- 5:15Every single. Patient that you.
- 5:17Put into that. Helicopter that you?
- 5:18Put into that. Aircraft.
- 5:20Is having the worst. Day of their.
- 5:22Life. And.
- 5:22Every single patient is going to feel extremely vulnerable, so we
- 5:29can you can tackle this and learn for yourself like the
- 5:32discomfort of it and how to work.
- 5:34Through it like this is a way that you can.
- 5:37Deeply be there for your patients on their worst days and
- 5:41how you can connect with them and help them when they feel the
- 5:43most vulnerable. And so I know in your mind
- 5:46you're thinking, OK, Janessa, this.
- 5:49This seems so easy, but this is a.
- 5:51Hard concept. So how do I do?
- 5:53This and so I'm gonna give you a couple things to like kind of
- 5:56think about that I walked the room through yesterday.
- 5:59So. The first thing is most of you.
- 6:01Guys are just. Thinking about getting hired.
- 6:04Everybody who comes to me, they're they're very like linear
- 6:08and they're thinking and they're like, how do I get hired in the
- 6:10flight? How do I make myself?
- 6:11Look the best. How do I?
- 6:12Stack up my resume and I tell them it's it's important to map
- 6:18out a plan and think about. How you get hired?
- 6:22But what's even more important that most people are not
- 6:25thinking about, but I'm thinking about?
- 6:26As your coach. Is how to transition confidently
- 6:30after getting hired. Because getting hired is the
- 6:33easy part. It's all the stuff after that.
- 6:37And it's learning new skills and being kind of in a provider
- 6:40role, and I'm having new capabilities with intubation and
- 6:44RSI and chess. Tubes.
- 6:46And. Surgical crikes like.
- 6:49And having a huge. Protocol book.
- 6:52Stepping into that person is going to require you to be
- 6:55vulnerable is going to require. You to say.
- 6:57I don't know is going to require you to.
- 6:59Ask for help. And so really allowing the
- 7:04discomfort of vulnerability and, and realizing it's not about
- 7:09stacking up your resume, allowing yourself to be
- 7:12vulnerable as you're going through the process of getting
- 7:14the flight is going to teach you how to navigate.
- 7:16It for afterwards. Which is so important both for
- 7:19your patient and for you as you're learning new things.
- 7:22And so in my group in the flight prep Academy, I'm really not
- 7:26only teaching you how to get to flight, but I'm teaching you how
- 7:29to become that flight nurse now. How to build these tools so
- 7:32that? When you get there, you know
- 7:34exactly what tools to pull out and exactly how to do.
- 7:36It for yourself. Another thing that I really am
- 7:41teaching you and why this is so important is because now
- 7:46coaching hundreds of people and getting into flight and
- 7:49precepting lots of people in the seven years that I flew that
- 7:53were brand new is what I've learned from that.
- 7:57Is that whatever you are? Struggling with before you get
- 8:01into flight is going to be your. Struggle afterwards, so I tell.
- 8:06People, for example, this person I said, if being super
- 8:10vulnerable is hard for you right now, when you can overcome this
- 8:13before flight, this is going to be the thing that's going to be
- 8:16the hardest for you as you become a flight nurse.
- 8:18So I tell them I see this time and time again.
- 8:20Whatever you're struggling with before getting into flight is.
- 8:24Going to be. Your struggle tenfold afterwards
- 8:27and so if. You can.
- 8:28Learn the pieces and the tools to really help yourself.
- 8:32Now this is this is what's going to make a massive difference for
- 8:35you. And I told her, like,
- 8:36vulnerability is going to be your thing after you become a
- 8:39flight nurse, you're going to. Feel.
- 8:43Super vulnerable and have really vulnerable moments and that's
- 8:46going to be your trigger and that's going to be the hard
- 8:48part. For you.
- 8:49And I said, but the the great news is we now know what it is.
- 8:53So now we're going to work on building.
- 8:56This the tools to practice. Vulnerability to move through it
- 9:03and to. Allow it to push you.
- 9:05Forward and to give you momentum, OK.
- 9:08So these are. Kind of the things that I took
- 9:11everybody through in the group yesterday and I wanted to kind
- 9:13of share them with you guys here on the podcast.
- 9:15So these are some questions that are going to get you thinking
- 9:19about if you're thinking well, I know this sounds so simple.
- 9:22How do I? How do I allow myself to feel
- 9:24vulnerable? How do I allow myself to feel
- 9:26uncomfortable in this process? So.
- 9:27I'm going to take. You through questions and if you
- 9:30need to pause this in between each question, think about your
- 9:32answer and then come back. Please do that because.
- 9:36These questions are meant to be hard.
- 9:38I meant to push. You to really.
- 9:41Hard limits of how to think, because everybody thinks this
- 9:45is. All about your.
- 9:48What you're doing and the strategy of what you're doing.
- 9:50But I'm it's really all about mindset.
- 9:53Flight is like. 10% skills and 90% mindset.
- 9:56So these are these questions are meant to be hard, OK?
- 9:59So #1 when we're thinking about like.
- 10:02How do we? Dig into being vulnerable.
- 10:05How do we allow? Discomfort, the first question I
- 10:08have. For you is what is the.
- 10:10Feeling you are avoiding feeling to work on your action plan to
- 10:14get to flight or to take action to get to flight.
- 10:18So I'm going to ask this again. What's the?
- 10:20Feeling you are avoiding working on or feeling to get to flight
- 10:26right now or to start taking action on it.
- 10:29If you need a pause it. Pause it right now I.
- 10:31Asked her this. Yesterday and she said it was
- 10:33vulnerable. So for her.
- 10:34It's vulnerable. For me it was fear.
- 10:38I had to fear failure. That's what.
- 10:41Took me two years to actually go for this goal because I was so.
- 10:44Afraid of failing. And then I realized.
- 10:46Wait, I'm already. Failing because I'm just not
- 10:48even going for it. I'm failing ahead of time.
- 10:51So that's but but knowing what that feeling is that you're
- 10:55avoiding is, is going to give you so much insight.
- 10:58So for me it was fear. For her, it was vulnerability.
- 11:01OK. Second question, what is now the
- 11:04feeling that you have to generate?
- 11:07OK, so you're going to allow fear, but also what's the?
- 11:10Feeling that you have to generate.
- 11:13For some people, this might be courage.
- 11:14That we talked. About courage yesterday on the
- 11:16call, For some people it might be resilience.
- 11:19For me, it's resilience and grit.
- 11:22Like I have to generate grit. We talked about in the moments
- 11:26where you feel the most vulnerable and in the moments
- 11:28where. You feel fear.
- 11:30Most. People pull back.
- 11:32And that's normal. They pull back and they retreat,
- 11:35but those are the moments where you want to lean in.
- 11:37Those are the moments where you want to double down in what
- 11:40you're doing and double down in the action.
- 11:42Double down in the feeling that you want to generate.
- 11:45Because when you double down, that's when you show yourself
- 11:49that you can have fear and still move through it.
- 11:53So what? Is that feeling that you need to
- 11:55generate for me it's great or resilience with that fear?
- 11:59OK, third question. This is the mind blowing
- 12:03question because I know that your brain is telling you well.
- 12:07How do I have? Fear and how do I have?
- 12:09Grit. At the same time, and the third
- 12:11final question is what? Does it look like to have both?
- 12:16It's not. Either or.
- 12:17What does it look like to have? Fear and grit at the same time?
- 12:22What? Does it look like to have
- 12:25vulnerability? And courage.
- 12:28This is what my client said yesterday.
- 12:30What does it look like to have? Vulnerability and courage for
- 12:32you. And I asked her, when's the last
- 12:34time you had vulnerability and courage at the same time you
- 12:37practice it and you were successful.
- 12:40And we looked back and she said nursing school so.
- 12:45We have to. Create in our brain these
- 12:47pathways that it doesn't have to.
- 12:49Be like we. Have fear and then we retreat.
- 12:51Or we have. Resilience and we move forward.
- 12:56We have to teach. Ourselves and our brains that we
- 12:58can hold space on this scale for having both at the same time.
- 13:02So for example, my example of having fear and resilience at
- 13:06the same time was when I first became a flight nurse.
- 13:09I had a lot. Of fear I was doing a lot of
- 13:11skills and learning new things that I had never learned before
- 13:15and I also. Had to, really.
- 13:17Tap into generating resilience and telling myself of my.
- 13:20Capability that I've. Done hard things before.
- 13:23I've been in this place before and this growth of where I'm
- 13:25going requires me to. Have both.
- 13:29And I've shared with you guys before, and I'm going to just
- 13:31share it again, that every single call that I ran for the
- 13:34seven years that I flew, I was nervous or I had some level of
- 13:38fear. And I always knew that I would
- 13:41figure it out. I always knew my partner and I
- 13:44would figure it out. I always knew.
- 13:45We would have the capability. Of getting what we needed and
- 13:51and so. This takes me.
- 13:52Back to vulnerability and discomfort, what's the feeling
- 13:57you are avoiding feeling that's getting you working towards
- 13:59flight? What's the feeling that you want
- 14:01to generate and then how? Can you hold space for both?
- 14:05And remember a time. Where you had fear.
- 14:09And resilience at the same time, or you had vulnerability and
- 14:12courage at the same at the same time.
- 14:15Give yourself examples of that. When you're able to think of
- 14:19those moments, then you can start to generate how you can
- 14:23lean on that now. And this is the very.
- 14:25Last question that I asked everyone that I think is going
- 14:28to be really helpful in putting this all together.
- 14:31When you have vulnerability and and courage at the same time.
- 14:39When you have vulnerability and courage at the same time.
- 14:42What do you have to believe? About yourself in those moments.
- 14:45What's the beliefs that you have to have?
- 14:48Or for my example, when you have fear and resilience.
- 14:53What do you believe about yourself?
- 14:55When you. Figure out how to have both.
- 14:57What do you have to believe about yourself?
- 14:59And for me. The thought is I always figure
- 15:02it out. I always.
- 15:04Get it done. I'm always capable, no matter.
- 15:07How hard it? Is to find the way if I keep
- 15:11going? I will get there.
- 15:13These are thoughts that have. Really served me and maybe you
- 15:15can borrow too, but this? Is the last.
- 15:17Question again is if you can hold both feelings at the same
- 15:21time, if you can have vulnerability and courage.
- 15:25What? Does that person believe about
- 15:27themselves? And I want to offer you to dig
- 15:31into that. Belief, that is the belief that.
- 15:35Is going to matter in your interview.
- 15:37That is the belief that you. Want to carry with you in this
- 15:40journey of getting to flight? That is a belief.
- 15:43That will get you an offer and I I.
- 15:46Told her. I said I really believe.
- 15:49That when you allow. Yourself to be.
- 15:51Vulnerable doors will open for you.
- 15:54You will get the offer, you will get the job.
- 15:57And then I just want to leave you.
- 15:58Guys with this. Thought none of us got OK, some
- 16:03of you may. But the majority of us?
- 16:05Didn't get into nursing for the money or the shift work or the
- 16:10tasks that we were doing. A lot of us got.
- 16:14In to nursing or paramedicine because.
- 16:18We have a deep need to help people.
- 16:21We. Love helping people and also I
- 16:25love being able to. Have the gift.
- 16:27Of helping people on the. Worst day of their life.
- 16:29And so I just want to offer you this is the same for flight and
- 16:36and we forget this when we're trying to go for big.
- 16:38Goals like flight. Nursing we get.
- 16:40Kind of into. This like get energy like what
- 16:43do I need to say? So that they'll.
- 16:44Like me better or what do I need to?
- 16:46Say so that. They'll want to hire me and it's
- 16:48kind of like this, get energy. How do I get there?
- 16:51And I just want to offer you to tune back into your.
- 16:54Desire of. Why you wanted to get into
- 16:56healthcare, You wanted to give, you wanted to help people and
- 17:01when you can get out of the get, when you can like turn into the
- 17:05giving, like why did you do this?
- 17:07You did this to help people. You.
- 17:08Did this to connect. You did this to be.
- 17:11There for people on the worst. Day of their lives, that's what
- 17:14will help you get. Out of the get energy and it's
- 17:17going to require you to be vulnerable, it's going to
- 17:20require you to be uncomfortable, it's going to require you.
- 17:24To be. Extremely.
- 17:25Honest with yourself. Move into giving energy.
- 17:30Tap into why you did this, tap into why you want to become a
- 17:34flight nurse, move into vulnerability.
- 17:37And if you want a strategic plan and a mapped out plan to get
- 17:41there and you want help with your flight interviews and you
- 17:44want to start preparing to get into flight now I'm helping
- 17:47people do it in half the amount of time.
- 17:49Come join us inside the Flight Prep Academy.
- 17:51I'm going to teach you exactly how to do.
- 17:52That that's it this week. Allow yourselves to.
- 17:55Feel more vulnerable and really open up to the discomfort of
- 18:01growing and doing something new. If you want flight, I'll help
- 18:04you get there. I'll see you guys next week.
