Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Do What Feels Good
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here, you are listening to a
- 0:23Speaker 1: five minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I am sitting here.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I'm recording this midweek, shortly after I did a keynote
- 0:33Speaker 1: presentation for a Boston based company and the presentation was
- 0:38Speaker 1: all about how to incorporate healthy habits into your regular routine.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So basically strategies, tips, tools so that these employees could
- 0:50Speaker 1: be more regular with the things that make them feel good. Now,
- 0:56Speaker 1: one of my forever tips when it comes to adopting
- 1:00Speaker 1: a healthy movement practice is that you've got to choose
- 1:04Speaker 1: something that you enjoy. You have got to lean into
- 1:09Speaker 1: whatever type of movement makes you happy. So if you
- 1:14Speaker 1: see someone who is like a huge fan of CrossFit
- 1:17Speaker 1: and you think it looks cool, but when you go
- 1:19Speaker 1: to CrossFit you actually one hundred percent dread everything from
- 1:23Speaker 1: burpies to box jumps to power.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Cleans, then you don't have to do CrossFit.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Just like if you see someone, perhaps while scrolling on
- 1:33Speaker 1: the socials that is running their gazillionth marathon, but every
- 1:38Speaker 1: time you lace up your sneakers and go outside it
- 1:40Speaker 1: actually makes you want to contemplate a slow death. Then
- 1:44Speaker 1: maybe running isn't for you, So that piece of advice Again,
- 1:49Speaker 1: if you want to incorporate movement into your regular routine,
- 1:52Speaker 1: then that movement has got to be something that you like.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And to piggyback on that.
- 1:58Speaker 1: While I'm offering up this tip, it also helps if
- 2:01Speaker 1: you diversify your activities, so maybe you aren't doing the
- 2:06Speaker 1: same thing every day. Not only does that help to
- 2:09Speaker 1: keep things interesting, but it also helps.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Stave off boredom.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Now why am I starting off this five minute Friday
- 2:17Speaker 1: with this story? Well, lately, I have really been focusing
- 2:23Speaker 1: on feel in every aspect of my life. I am
- 2:28Speaker 1: paying more attention to the activities, the people, the situations
- 2:34Speaker 1: that make me feel good and consciously making an effort
- 2:41Speaker 1: to do more of those things. It sounds so simple, right, Like,
- 2:47Speaker 1: if you do the things that feel good, if you
- 2:49Speaker 1: live a life where you feel fulfilled, then it will
- 2:53Speaker 1: be great. But how many times do we get stuck
- 2:58Speaker 1: in patterns or routine or in certain relationships that make
- 3:03Speaker 1: us feel as though we have to endure this not
- 3:07Speaker 1: so stellar state of being. I've definitely been there. I
- 3:13Speaker 1: was telling someone last night a story about a romantic
- 3:17Speaker 1: relationship that I was in Gosh, maybe like seven or
- 3:20Speaker 1: eight years ago now, that definitely was a little bit
- 3:25Speaker 1: emotionally abusive, and I stayed in that relationship for longer
- 3:31Speaker 1: than I should have because I wanted to fix it.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I wanted to understand what was going on, why things
- 3:37Speaker 1: weren't adding up, And despite it not always feeling good,
- 3:41Speaker 1: I was convinced that it was something that was good
- 3:44Speaker 1: for me. In retrospect, now, looking back on that situation,
- 3:48Speaker 1: it definitely wasn't good for me. And I've learned so
- 3:50Speaker 1: much when it comes to not just romantic relationships but
- 3:54Speaker 1: relationships in general since then. The truth is is that
- 3:59Speaker 1: we have the opportunity to choose the things that feel good.
- 4:04Speaker 2: We have the opportunity to go back.
- 4:06Speaker 1: To the moment's situations, people that fill up our cup,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and when we focus on the things that do the adverse,
- 4:16Speaker 1: that have an adverse effect, it prompts an internal investigation.
- 4:22Speaker 1: What is it about this thing that doesn't truly serve me?
- 4:25Speaker 1: That I keep coming back to? Why can't I free
- 4:28Speaker 1: myself from it? And when you ask yourself these important questions,
- 4:33Speaker 1: it's not always easy, but it will help you get
- 4:36Speaker 1: the answers that you need, so hopefully you can shift
- 4:40Speaker 1: toward a direction of service, of happiness, of feeling good.
- 4:48Speaker 1: In this process, I encourage you to stop wondering quote
- 4:51Speaker 1: unquote what you should be doing, and again go back
- 4:55Speaker 1: to that true feeling that kind of close your eyes,
- 4:59Speaker 1: get re honest, listen to what's going on in your gut.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And follow that.
- 5:04Speaker 1: It's easy to get wrapped up in the should, but
- 5:06Speaker 1: when you should on yourself, it doesn't do you any
- 5:10Speaker 1: good period. So this week's prompt, I'm going to ask
- 5:13Speaker 1: you what feels good, what feels good right now? Who
- 5:18Speaker 1: feels good, what activity feels good? What area of your
- 5:21Speaker 1: life is bringing you joy? And how can you give
- 5:25Speaker 1: that more energy? And now a listener question.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Hi Emily, this is Olivia from Toronto, Ontario. I have
- 5:36Speaker 3: a question for you. I follow you on Instagram amazing
- 5:39Speaker 3: content and I see you have such incredible personal fashion style.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Do you have any tips for women looking to elevate
- 5:49Speaker 3: or develop their own personal fashion style? And how did
- 5:52Speaker 3: you come to develop yours?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Hey, Olivia, You're so sweet. I
- 5:57Speaker 1: really appreciate that. I wish I had a clear and
- 6:01Speaker 1: concise answer, or like someone that I could direct you to.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Which is the source of all of my quote unquote
- 6:08Speaker 1: fashion inspiration, I don't consider myself the most stylish. But
- 6:13Speaker 1: what I will say is that as I've gotten older,
- 6:16Speaker 1: I really focus on investing in good quality pieces, and
- 6:20Speaker 1: if I need something one off for a certain event
- 6:23Speaker 1: or a certain night out or whatever, oftentimes I'm leaning
- 6:28Speaker 1: in to Rent the Runway. I've been doing Rent the
- 6:30Speaker 1: Runway on and off for a few years now, and
- 6:34Speaker 1: I do have a discount code. If this is something
- 6:36Speaker 1: that your interest data in, I'll put it in the
- 6:38Speaker 1: show notes. But it's rtr emily A and that gets
- 6:42Speaker 1: you forty percent off for the month. So I mean,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I've been doing that because honestly, it's nice to wear
- 6:48Speaker 1: nicer quality clothes instead of just slowly accumulating things within
- 6:53Speaker 1: my closet that I'm not going to wear more than once.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I am constantly trying to per the closet. I probably
- 7:02Speaker 1: do a deep dive into it like once every two
- 7:05Speaker 1: to three months, and so in that I'm focused on
- 7:09Speaker 1: finding the pieces that make me happy again, going with
- 7:13Speaker 1: that idea of what feels good. I also feel like
- 7:17Speaker 1: something that I've been really focused on lately is really
- 7:21Speaker 1: shopping for where I am now for so long in
- 7:26Speaker 1: my closet, I would hold on to items that maybe
- 7:28Speaker 1: were a smaller size or like brought back a certain memory.
- 7:33Speaker 1: But those clothes may not fit me now, don't serve
- 7:37Speaker 1: me now. And so I've been really working to let
- 7:40Speaker 1: go of that stuff and fill it instead with stuff
- 7:45Speaker 1: that's practical, pieces that are practical for what I have
- 7:49Speaker 1: going on in the mix at this point. On the
- 7:53Speaker 1: inspiration note, one last thing I'll say. I mean, I'm
- 7:55Speaker 1: constantly scrolling like all of you are, on the socials
- 7:58Speaker 1: on TikTok on Instagram. So if I see something, I
- 8:02Speaker 1: am like an avid screenshotter, and I'll go back to
- 8:06Speaker 1: that screenshot and think about, like when I'll want to
- 8:09Speaker 1: wear that at some point. I rarely shop just as shop.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I usually shop with a specific thing in mind, and
- 8:17Speaker 1: I find that building my closet that way is how
- 8:21Speaker 1: I continuously buy investment pieces instead of doing something like
- 8:26Speaker 1: fast fashion e or what have you.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I'm not sure if this was really helpful, but.
- 8:32Speaker 1: A peek inside into my crazy, crazy mind anyway. Follow
- 8:37Speaker 1: along at Emily body Over at Hurdle Podcast. Happy weekend, y'all,
- 8:43Speaker 1: another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys, next time.
