- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here it is a Wednesday, it
- 0:16is hump day. It's the 22nd of November.
- 0:20Great to have your company. Good on you for tapping on play,
- 0:24not just thinking, oh, I can squeeze in another one of my
- 0:27favorite episodes of whatever podcast it is that you're
- 0:30listening to. Or I can listen to some music,
- 0:33or I can just chill and listen to the the sounds of the world
- 0:36around me. But you have thought, ah, no,
- 0:38it's time. Let me invite Sean in and he
- 0:41will bring God's word and together we will hear some more
- 0:45of God's promises for his people.
- 0:47I like that decision. Well done.
- 0:50So we are going to do just that today.
- 0:53It's all about calling God's people to trust in God himself.
- 0:59This is a very kind of unified chapter of Isaiah, all about
- 1:04trusting God. And boy, we can use this as the
- 1:09world around us gets noisier and busier.
- 1:11It's nice to have this reminder to draw our hearts and our minds
- 1:16back to our Creator. Join me, friends.
- 1:19Let us refresh and refocus our hearts reading together.
- 1:25Isaiah 51. Listen to me.
- 1:38All who hope for deliverance, all who seek the Lord.
- 1:42Consider the rock from which you were cut, the quarry from which
- 1:46you were mined. Yes, think about Abraham, your
- 1:49ancestor, and Sarah, who gave birth to your nation.
- 1:53Abraham was only one man when I called him, but when I blessed
- 1:57him, he became a great nation. The Lord will comfort Israel
- 2:03again and have pity on her ruins.
- 2:06Her desert will blossom like Eden, her barren wilderness like
- 2:11the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found
- 2:15there. Songs of Thanksgiving will fill
- 2:18the air. Listen to me, my people.
- 2:21Hear me, Israel, for my law will be proclaimed, and my justice
- 2:26will become a light to the nations.
- 2:29My mercy and justice are coming soon.
- 2:32My salvation is on the way. My strong arm will bring justice
- 2:37to the nations. All distant lands will look to
- 2:40me and wait in hope for my powerful arm.
- 2:45Look up to the skies above and gaze down on the earth below.
- 2:50For the skies will disappear like smoke, and the earth will
- 2:54wear out like a piece of clothing.
- 2:57The people of the earth will die like flies.
- 2:59But my salvation lasts forever. My righteous rule will never
- 3:06end. Listen to me, you who know right
- 3:10from wrong, you who cherish my laws in your hearts.
- 3:14Do not be afraid of people scorn, nor fear their insults,
- 3:18for the moth will devour them as it devours clothing.
- 3:22The worm will eat them as it eats wool.
- 3:25That my righteousness will last forever.
- 3:27My salvation will continue from generation to generation.
- 3:32Wake up, wake up, O Lord, Clothe yourself with strength.
- 3:37Flex your mighty right arm. Rouse yourself as in the days of
- 3:42old when you slew Egypt, the dragon of the Nile.
- 3:47Are you not the same today? The one who dried up the sea,
- 3:51making a path of escape through the depths so that your people
- 3:54could crossover. Those who have been ransomed by
- 3:58the Lord will return. They will enter Jerusalem
- 4:01singing crowned with everlasting joy.
- 4:05Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be
- 4:08filled with joy and gladness. I yes, I am the one who comforts
- 4:14you. So why are you afraid of mere
- 4:17humans who wither like the grass and disappear?
- 4:22Yet you have forgotten the Lord, your Creator, the one who
- 4:26stretched out the sky like a canopy and laid the foundations
- 4:30of the earth? Will you remain in constant
- 4:34dread of human oppressors? Will you continue to fear the
- 4:38anger of your enemies? Where is their fury and anger?
- 4:42Now it is gone. Soon all your captives will be
- 4:47released. Imprisonment, starvation, and
- 4:50death will not be your fate. For I am the Lord your God, who
- 4:56stirs up the sea, causing its waves to roar.
- 5:00My name is the Lord of Heaven's armies, and I have put my words
- 5:06in your mouth and hidden you safely in my hand.
- 5:11I stretched out the sky like a canopy and laid the foundations
- 5:15of the earth. I am the one who says to Israel,
- 5:20You are my people. Wake up, wake up, O Jerusalem,
- 5:25You have drunk the cup of the Lord's fury.
- 5:28You have drunk the cup of terror, tipping out its last
- 5:32drops. Not one of your children is left
- 5:35alive to take your hand and guide you.
- 5:38These two calamities have fallen on you, desolation and
- 5:43destruction, famine and war. And who is left to sympathize
- 5:48with you? Who is left to comfort you?
- 5:51For your children have fainted and lie in the streets, helpless
- 5:55as antelopes caught in a net. The Lord has poured out his
- 6:00fury. God has rebuked them.
- 6:04But now listen to this, you afflicted ones who sit in a
- 6:09drunken stupor, though not from drinking wine.
- 6:14This is what the Sovereign Lord, your God and defender, says.
- 6:18See, I have taken the terrible cup from your hands.
- 6:24You will drink no more of my fury.
- 6:27Instead, I will hand that cup to your tormentors, those who said
- 6:33we will trample you into the dust and walk on your backs.
- 6:47Lord, we think of those parts of our lives which feel like ruins,
- 6:54which feel like deserts, or just as you promised your people long
- 6:59ago. May they blossom like Eden.
- 7:02May the barren parts of our hearts and our experiences
- 7:07transform into the garden of the Lord.
- 7:13Let your songs of Thanksgiving fill our air.
- 7:20Holy Spirit, come. Come into the deepest crevices
- 7:24and cracks in our hearts and in our experiences transform us.
- 7:33Take away that brokenness that has been a part of our lives and
- 7:37replace it with your presence and your wholeness and your
- 7:42restoration, the restoration that you have been providing for
- 7:46your people for so many countless generations, from the
- 7:51days of Isaiah all the way to here, to us.
- 7:56Lord, make us whole and help us dive head first into that deep
- 8:02pool of grace that is your presence and your provision in
- 8:08our lives. We just bask in your
- 8:13magnificence and we pray all these things in the saving name
- 8:20of Jesus. Amen.
