- New tariffs. New bans. Neighbors at odds. This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. Top story. President Trump this morning signed executive orders banning a range of Canadian imports. Alcoholic spirits. Some dairy. Motorbikes. Whey and non-alcoholic beer are banned outright. Tariffs rise on cheeses and motorboats. The bans begin September twenty-ninth. The White House says Canada is "discriminating" against US businesses. Canada's trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc, calls the measures "unjustified." Prime Minister Mark Carney told Canadians their pivot away from the US as their largest trading partner "will come at a cost." His counter-tariffs on American steel, clothing, and furniture took effect just after midnight Tuesday. The numbers matter. In twenty twenty-five, Canada exported six hundred eighty-seven million dollars in spirits to the US. Two hundred sixty-nine million in dairy. Ninety million in motorbikes. Analysts estimate the immediate hit near one billion dollars. Talks collapsed in late August. Nothing new is scheduled. Two historic allies are negotiating through press releases. That is not normal, and the cost will land on workers and shoppers on both sides of the border before it lands on anyone in office. Scripture is not silent on trade. Proverbs twenty, verse twenty-three says, "Unequal weights are an abomination to the Lord, and false scales are not good." God cares about honest measures. He also cares about neighbors. Romans twelve, verse eighteen tells believers, "If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all." Christians don't control tariff policy. But we are never supposed to be the reason peace broke. If you want to sit with Romans twelve today, keep it open in Bible Copilot and follow along. Second story. New York City has released thousands of previously unseen documents about air quality at Ground Zero after the September eleventh attacks. Reporting from the New York Times and CBS News shows internal concerns about the air persisted for months, while officials publicly assured residents the area was safe. Twenty-five years later, first responders and downtown residents are still dying of illnesses linked to that dust. The biblical category here is truth-telling by those in authority. Ephesians four, verse twenty-five is direct. "Having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another." Public trust is a stewardship. When it breaks, people breathe the consequences for decades. Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard. Third story. The creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, announced Tuesday they're renaming the show "South America." A jab at executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, and at Apple and Google for updating their maps. The show just won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. Christians will land in different places on satire. Proverbs twenty-six warns about mockery that wounds without healing. Scripture also uses sharp irony — Elijah did it on Mount Carmel. The test is not whether it stings. It's whether it tells the truth. One practice for today. Watch your own words about people in power. Accurate, or just cutting? This episode is presented by Bible Copilot. Open Bible Copilot and study today's Verse of the Day first. You'll get a guided walk-through of what the passage says, what it means, what it teaches about God, and how to apply it this week. Three questions a day are free. "What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel." Trade wars. Cover-ups. Cultural feuds. The ancient diagnosis still fits. The war outside almost always started as a war inside. Thanks for listening to The Gospel Briefing. The headlines will keep escalating. Your peace does not have to. We'll see you tomorrow.
