Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: We need more ambitious leaders in education
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The story of the week this week goes to a
- 0:02Speaker 1: Herald piece about Nairi Ashmore, principal at Auckland Girls Grammar.
- 0:06Speaker 1: It's a great read. You should have a look at it.
- 0:07Speaker 1: If you haven't, it's online. Ten years ago, she took over,
- 0:11Speaker 1: turned the place upside down, and the results are speaking
- 0:14Speaker 1: for themselves. Where there was failure, there is now a 92%
- 0:19Speaker 1: university entrance mark for year 13s. That number, or that percentage,
- 0:24Speaker 1: was less than 50 when she started. The article gives
- 0:28Speaker 1: the impression of a driven, serious, quite determined leader there
- 0:31Speaker 1: for the right reasons, which is what you need. We
- 0:33Speaker 1: need more of these leaders in schools. Interestingly, one of
- 0:37Speaker 1: the things that she found was most difficult, not the kids,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but the teachers. Getting them to believe that the kids
- 0:44Speaker 1: could actually do better and be better, be more successful,
- 0:48Speaker 1: that was the challenge. Thank goodness she has succeeded and
- 0:52Speaker 1: she is a successful principal. I would like more of her.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I want more Naira is in schools around New Zealand.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I think we all do. We often, rightly, put the
- 1:02Speaker 1: focus on the curriculum or the style of teaching or
- 1:04Speaker 1: the assessments, but at the end of the day, leadership,
- 1:07Speaker 1: bit of vision, goals, and some guts are what drive
- 1:11Speaker 1: organisations to improve. It's true in business, and it's true
- 1:16Speaker 1: in education. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,

- 1:24Speaker 1: the podcast on iHeartRadio.
