Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everybody? Welcome into another episode of
- 0:12Speaker 1: DeCecco Daily. It's Andrew DeCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Final injury report.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Is out for Eagles Bears Monday night football.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Out for the Eagles, wide receiver Hollywood Brown, ankle, tight
- 0:26Speaker 1: end Dallas Goddard, knee, tackle Fred Johnson, knee. Questionable, outside
- 0:32Speaker 1: linebacker Jonathan Grenard, pectoral. The Saturday practice report, not practicing,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Hollywood Brown, ankle, Dallas Goddard, knee. Fred Johnson, knee. Limited
- 0:43Speaker 1: running back, Will Shipley, foot and full. Running back, Saquon Barkley, stinger.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Running back, Tank Bigsby, abdomen. Defensive tackle, Jalen Carter, wrist.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Outside linebacker, Jonathan Grenard, pectoral. Safety, Andrew Makuba, knee. Wide receiver,
- 1:00Speaker 1: Devontae Smith, hamstring. And guard, Tyler Steen, shoulder. The big
- 1:06Speaker 1: ones here, obviously Devontae Smith being full. That's a new development.
- 1:11Speaker 1: He was upgraded from being limited on Friday. Fred Johnson's
- 1:16Speaker 1: a new one, not participating.
- 1:18Speaker 2: And he's ruled out.
- 1:19Speaker 1: So that leaves the Eagles a little lighter on the
- 1:21Speaker 1: offensive line, which means that perhaps rookie guard Micah Morris
- 1:26Speaker 1: could see his first activation of the season, knowing that
- 1:32Speaker 1: they were down to nine linemen.
- 1:34Speaker 2: You're now at eight.
- 1:35Speaker 1: They could simply just go with eight and go heavier elsewhere,
- 1:38Speaker 1: but That's a new development, and really interesting here is
- 1:43Speaker 1: that Jonathan Grenard was listed as full for the first
- 1:47Speaker 1: time this season and listed as questionable the first two
- 1:50Speaker 1: weeks he'd been ruled out. So Grenard spoke in the
- 1:54Speaker 1: locker room on Saturday, and he seemed even more optimistic
- 2:00Speaker 1: relative to where he was last week. Now, he didn't
- 2:04Speaker 1: come right out and definitively say, I'm playing or I'm
- 2:06Speaker 1: not playing. But you can kind of just tell by
- 2:09Speaker 1: a player's demeanor. Last week, it didn't seem all that
- 2:13Speaker 1: likely that he was going to play. But I do
- 2:16Speaker 1: have a transcript here from Jonathan Grenard to maybe give
- 2:22Speaker 1: you guys a little bit of an illustration. And you
- 2:25Speaker 1: can maybe see where I'm coming from, where I say
- 2:29Speaker 1: that he seemed a little bit more on the optimistic side.
- 2:33Speaker 1: So how did this week feel in comparison to the
- 2:36Speaker 1: previous ones? Yeah, better and better each week, better this
- 2:39Speaker 1: week than last week. But yeah, I feel like I
- 2:41Speaker 1: had a pretty solid week, even kind of last week
- 2:44Speaker 1: was solid. Just kind of, like I said before, just
- 2:47Speaker 1: leaving it up to the coaches and staff, like, how
- 2:51Speaker 1: did I look, you know?
- 2:52Speaker 2: And as that number will, or that answer will come
- 2:56Speaker 2: pretty soon. So Felt pretty good. So I think, honestly,
- 3:00Speaker 2: just leave it to them.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And I think I feel I'm in a good I'm
- 3:04Speaker 1: in a solid spot.
- 3:05Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 3:10Speaker 1: What's it like going through this without having a training camp?
- 3:14Speaker 1: He said, yeah, at the end of the day, it's
- 3:17Speaker 1: still ball. That's what I kind of attribute it to.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Of course, you can try to get as much in
- 3:23Speaker 1: shape as you possibly could, but you're never going to
- 3:26Speaker 1: get in shape until you're actually playing. But, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 1: at that point, it's just a matter of just getting repetition.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I mean, like I keep going back to this. This
- 3:35Speaker 1: is football. So I don't feel like it'll be that
- 3:38Speaker 1: long before I can kind of get back in gear.
- 3:40Speaker 1: But obviously, just getting the getting the football shape is
- 3:43Speaker 1: something everybody has to go through. Last week you said
- 3:51Speaker 1: basically you indicated that you wouldn't be out there until
- 3:54Speaker 1: you feel like you can play at a dominant level.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Do you feel like now you can play at a
- 3:59Speaker 1: dominant level? Yeah, Grenard said. I feel like if I
- 4:04Speaker 1: can go out there and dominate, and that's just another tell, too.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I think I feel good, but kind of like how
- 4:11Speaker 1: I said last week, I could think I was dominant,
- 4:15Speaker 1: a rep that made me look terrible to them, that
- 4:18Speaker 1: made me look terrible to them. Or the tight end
- 4:20Speaker 1: or the tackle may have messed up on their technique.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So it's just a lot of stuff that goes into that.
- 4:24Speaker 2: But I trust their judgment.
- 4:26Speaker 1: They're going to let me know, like everybody else knows
- 4:28Speaker 1: as well, if that answer is on Monday. But I
- 4:31Speaker 1: feel good. I feel I got a solid week, so
- 4:34Speaker 1: we're just going to see what they say. What's your
- 4:38Speaker 1: optimism level that you will? And he said, I'm pretty optimistic.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'm usually pessimistic about it, but... I'm pretty optimistic. I'm
- 4:49Speaker 1: ready to get out there. But like I said, man,
- 4:51Speaker 1: it's not, if it's not smart on my end or
- 4:54Speaker 1: for the team's sake, they'll let me know that. And
- 4:57Speaker 1: then if all the decisions were up to us, the
- 5:00Speaker 1: players to make the, to say if we're ready or not,
- 5:04Speaker 1: I'm sure, you know, I mean, sure.
- 5:06Speaker 2: You'll see nobody, everybody out there.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Everybody would be out there at any point in time.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So we'll see though, but I am ready to go
- 5:14Speaker 1: for sure.

- 7:48Speaker 1: He spoke about the bears and their running game. about
- 7:54Speaker 1: his observations, he said, yeah, Ben Johnson manages the plays
- 7:57Speaker 1: in the run game really, really well. He'll find a
- 7:59Speaker 1: million different ways just to run one play, but it's
- 8:02Speaker 1: just different people at different spots, you know. It's at
- 8:04Speaker 1: the end of the day, I just got to understand
- 8:07Speaker 1: who does what, what guy can do what, and then
- 8:10Speaker 1: just read your keys.
- 8:11Speaker 2: At the end of the day.
- 8:12Speaker 1: He's a real big guy of if you miss on
- 8:14Speaker 1: your keys, that's when you get got.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So hell of a coach, man. I remember him at
- 8:19Speaker 2: Detroit as well.
- 8:20Speaker 1: So just knowing how he likes to run the ball
- 8:23Speaker 1: and send a message really early and kind of keep
- 8:25Speaker 1: you on your toes, have a ton of respect for him.
- 8:28Speaker 2: It's going to be a dogfight.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I mean, I understand that they came and stole one
- 8:32Speaker 1: last year and shoot, rightfully so. Last time I was
- 8:37Speaker 1: playing the Bears, I lost too. So I'm looking forward
- 8:40Speaker 1: to it. So if it's that time, it's on and poppin'.
- 8:47Speaker 1: So there you have it from Jonathan Grenard. Zach Ertz
- 8:54Speaker 1: spoke in the locker room, and again, he's done everything
- 8:58Speaker 1: that he can to prepare himself for Monday night. It's
- 9:01Speaker 1: up to the coaches to see if they're going to
- 9:03Speaker 1: play him. I have to imagine that they would, but
- 9:06Speaker 1: he talked about cramming and how Andy Dalton mentioned to
- 9:09Speaker 1: him that it's kind of like you're learning– I got
- 9:15Speaker 1: to find the exact phrasing of it, but he said,
- 9:22Speaker 1: Zachary said, I was definitely more nervous about the body
- 9:24Speaker 1: just because I hadn't, I hadn't, I've learned the playbook
- 9:27Speaker 1: a hundred times at this point. It's like, I was
- 9:29Speaker 1: talking to Andy Dalton about this. He said, it's almost
- 9:32Speaker 1: like learning the colors. Red is now blue. Blue is
- 9:34Speaker 1: now green. It's the same routes that I've always ran,
- 9:37Speaker 1: just called a different name. So from a playbook standpoint,
- 9:40Speaker 1: I thought it was smooth. And now it's up to
- 9:42Speaker 1: the coaches to kind of determine how they thought it went.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Was there a moment where you felt like, yep, I'm back?
- 9:51Speaker 1: I think it was just, you know, I'd been training
- 9:53Speaker 1: on my own for so long.
- 9:54Speaker 2: So for me, it was.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Really how was that first day of practice going to feel?
- 9:58Speaker 1: And then how was the next morning?
- 10:00Speaker 2: Going to feel?
- 10:01Speaker 1: And so just be able to stack three days in
- 10:03Speaker 1: a row, which honestly, I haven't practiced three days in
- 10:05Speaker 1: a row for a long time, even when I was
- 10:07Speaker 1: fully healthy. So just to be able to get out
- 10:10Speaker 1: there today, stack another day and hopefully do a good
- 10:13Speaker 1: enough job that the coaches were pleased. But for me,
- 10:16Speaker 1: it's all about just earning the opportunity to play Monday night.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Whether I get that or not, it's up to them.
- 10:21Speaker 1: But for me, it was just a blessing to be
- 10:23Speaker 1: back out there again. If it was up to you,
- 10:31Speaker 1: do you think you're ready to play? Zach Ertz said, yeah,
- 10:35Speaker 1: I mean, it's not up to me, so I don't
- 10:37Speaker 1: want to get into hypotheticals. Okay, so another question about
- 10:45Speaker 1: the playbook here in a different angle. And it says, yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 1: it was good. I mean, the playbook is honestly, it
- 10:51Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense. You know, you go in
- 10:53Speaker 1: some playbooks that especially that there's not really a rhyme
- 10:58Speaker 1: or reason. They're just called one thing or the other.
- 11:01Speaker 1: And so for me, with this playbook, there's honestly, it
- 11:04Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense. Things are called and kind of...
- 11:08Speaker 1: families or groups, and you're able to kind of compartmentalize
- 11:11Speaker 1: the playbook. So for me, learning the playbook, I don't
- 11:13Speaker 1: think it was as difficult as some of the other
- 11:15Speaker 1: ones I've learned. So I think that's more of a
- 11:17Speaker 1: testament to Sean and how he's kind of disguised this offense.
- 11:22Speaker 1: So we're going to wait and see what the future,
- 11:24Speaker 1: the immediate future holds for Zach Ertz relative to Monday night,
- 11:27Speaker 1: but they need him. And it sounds like he was
- 11:31Speaker 1: doing everything he can, working diligently behind the scenes to
- 11:34Speaker 1: familiarize himself and with this playbook, and we'll see if
- 11:38Speaker 1: there's maybe a small package of plays where he's able
- 11:40Speaker 1: to go out there and help the offense a little
- 11:43Speaker 1: bit as a pass catcher. Some interesting things here and
- 11:49Speaker 1: there that I've compiled throughout the week of talking to
- 11:53Speaker 1: different players, and I'll have a more comprehensive breakdown of
- 11:56Speaker 1: this in my locker room notebook on InsideTheBirds.com when I
- 12:00Speaker 1: can really transcribe everything and look at the quotes and
- 12:04Speaker 1: figure out how I'm going to tell the story.
- 12:06Speaker 2: But I spoke to Drew.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Kendall and you may not know this, but he was
- 12:11Speaker 1: at Boston college with, uh, with, with Ozzie Trapillo, who
- 12:15Speaker 1: is a tackle who's coming off a pretty nasty injury there, um,
- 12:20Speaker 1: that he sustained. I think it might've been this summer,
- 12:22Speaker 1: but I asked him, were you guys close? How often
- 12:25Speaker 1: do you keep in touch? He said, they talk once
- 12:26Speaker 1: a week. They grew up very close to one another. And, um,
- 12:31Speaker 1: the new England area, they went to different high schools,
- 12:35Speaker 1: but they never played against one another.
- 12:37Speaker 2: So it's something.
- 12:38Speaker 1: That they said that we weren't, he said, we weren't
- 12:41Speaker 1: as close in high school, but when we got to college, they,
- 12:45Speaker 1: they really became, you know, almost thick as thieves. And
- 12:48Speaker 1: he mentioned that, you know, it's a tough injury that he's,
- 12:51Speaker 1: that he's working his way back from, but Ozzie Trapillo
- 12:54Speaker 1: was a second round pick, I believe of the Chicago bears. And,
- 12:59Speaker 1: Drew Kendall was part of that offensive line at BC
- 13:01Speaker 1: as well, so I kind of drew that connection there
- 13:04Speaker 1: and just asked him about it off to the side.
- 13:07Speaker 1: As a journalist, I'm a fan of really good stories,
- 13:12Speaker 1: and the Eagles have a lot of good stories in
- 13:14Speaker 1: their locker room, but one of the better ones, or
- 13:17Speaker 1: one of the ones that for some reason connects with
- 13:20Speaker 1: me for some reason, is the story of E.J.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Jenkins.
- 13:26Speaker 1: A player who went to three different colleges, started at St.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Francis in PA, was a collegiate wide receiver, didn't see
- 13:34Speaker 1: a high volume of targets, comes to the NFL as
- 13:37Speaker 1: an undrafted free agent as sort of a plus-size wideout,
- 13:41Speaker 1: ends up gaining weight, transitioning to tight end, learning the
- 13:46Speaker 1: blocking aspect of that position, didn't make the 53-man roster
- 13:50Speaker 1: for two years in a row, and he makes it
- 13:52Speaker 1: this time around.
- 13:53Speaker 2: How did he make the roster? Well, E.J.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Jenkins told me that he's not on social media very much.
- 14:00Speaker 1: So he mentioned that on cut down day, there was
- 14:06Speaker 1: a lot of anxiety and his heart was racing out
- 14:08Speaker 1: of his chest is the way that he put it.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And that was when it was about a half hour out.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Fast forward to about 620, he hadn't heard anything, but
- 14:17Speaker 1: he gets a phone call from Jordan Milata, who says,
- 14:21Speaker 1: let's go, let's go. And he said, oh, did I
- 14:25Speaker 1: ruin it? And he said, no, you didn't.
- 14:27Speaker 2: You didn't ruin it at all. You gave me a
- 14:28Speaker 2: core memory. And E.J. said forever.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I'm going to remember that Jordan Milata was the first
- 14:33Speaker 1: person who called me when I made the team. I
- 14:37Speaker 1: think that's a really cool story. He was completely disconnected
- 14:41Speaker 1: from social media. Mailata sees the video that the social
- 14:44Speaker 1: media team is putting out or the clips of players
- 14:47Speaker 1: who made the team. And he reaches out to EJ
- 14:50Speaker 1: to congratulate him. And EJ hadn't known anything. He said,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I didn't know what was going on. But everybody learns differently.
- 14:58Speaker 1: You can see it on hard knocks how certain players
- 15:00Speaker 1: find out. And I thought that was really interesting. And
- 15:03Speaker 1: I wanted to make sure that I had a chance
- 15:04Speaker 1: to ask him about it. During locker clean-out, he mentioned
- 15:08Speaker 1: to me that he was looking to maybe shed five pounds.
- 15:12Speaker 2: He's 260.
- 15:14Speaker 1: But he mentioned maybe looking at 255 to maybe alleviate
- 15:18Speaker 1: some pressure from his knees so it doesn't affect his
- 15:21Speaker 1: flexibility and twitchiness. But he said he's still right around 255, 260.
- 15:27Speaker 1: His body fat is down. It's around 10%. And he's
- 15:31Speaker 1: feeling good. And he had a lot of really good
- 15:33Speaker 1: things to say about tight ends coach Ryan Mahaffey and
- 15:37Speaker 1: the room itself. I talked to him about the mentality
- 15:40Speaker 1: that you have to have. As a blocker, someone who's
- 15:43Speaker 1: willing to do the dirty work, and he gave a
- 15:45Speaker 1: really good response on that. So I'll have to comb
- 15:48Speaker 1: through the quotes there and be able to illustrate it
- 15:55Speaker 1: better in a story form.
- 15:57Speaker 2: But it was good to catch up with EJ for
- 16:00Speaker 2: a while.
- 16:00Speaker 1: And I saw this in my mentions, and I see
- 16:04Speaker 1: it every now and then on social media. There are
- 16:07Speaker 1: some who question why he made the team. The coaches
- 16:12Speaker 1: see it differently than many of you who are questioning that.
- 16:16Speaker 1: There is a lot that you might not be privy to,
- 16:18Speaker 1: and he does bring a lot from a blocking perspective.
- 16:21Speaker 1: He was pretty consistent this summer when it came to that.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Pass catching, yeah, there were some untimely drops that he had,
- 16:29Speaker 1: but I thought... from the first day of camp really
- 16:31Speaker 1: to the end there were moments of dominance as a
- 16:34Speaker 1: blocker and when you're looking at this offense and what's
- 16:37Speaker 1: required of the tight end room and you're looking for
- 16:39Speaker 1: more diversity and balance in terms of skill set he
- 16:44Speaker 1: checks off all those boxes so the coaches saw what
- 16:50Speaker 1: I had been writing about in my notes and that
- 16:53Speaker 1: stuff does not show up in the box score and
- 16:56Speaker 1: And you may look at the resume. He hasn't played
- 16:58Speaker 1: a lot of NFL games prior to this. He's not
- 17:01Speaker 1: necessarily a young developmental prospect, but a really good story
- 17:04Speaker 1: of resilience, learning and adapting and becoming proficient in.
- 17:11Speaker 2: A tool that is, is that a premium in today's NFL?
- 17:15Speaker 1: And he can certainly bring that, that, that nastiness to the,
- 17:19Speaker 1: to the mix as a blocker. You can tell that
- 17:21Speaker 1: Sean Mannion and whether it's Howie Roseman, who was gloating,
- 17:25Speaker 1: glowing about him after the, after cutdowns, Nick Sirianni spoke
- 17:30Speaker 1: pretty highly of him as well. You can see that
- 17:32Speaker 1: they're really pleased with the way that he's progressed since
- 17:37Speaker 1: being here.
- 17:37Speaker 2: And I think that that's one.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Of the truly good stories and feel good stories and
- 17:44Speaker 1: a really good reminder of whatever you're doing in life,
- 17:48Speaker 1: whatever your occupation is, if you work hard and you
- 17:52Speaker 1: prepare and you're able to to kind of just kind
- 17:58Speaker 1: of put your head down and not necessarily worry about
- 18:01Speaker 1: numbers or what this person is doing or what that
- 18:03Speaker 1: person is doing and solely focus on what you need
- 18:06Speaker 1: to do to get to where you want to.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Go, good things are going to happen.
- 18:10Speaker 1: And I love stories like that because it's just another
- 18:13Speaker 1: reminder of hard work does pay dividends. And he's certainly
