- 0:00Speaker 1: It's more of a commitment to just nurturing this relationship
- 0:03Speaker 1: with yourself, because once you make the decision to start running,
- 0:07Speaker 1: I hope that you fall in love with it and
- 0:09Speaker 1: it maybe doesn't feel the greatest all the time, but
- 0:12Speaker 1: that's part of the wholeness of the experience and it
- 0:15Speaker 1: can be really beautiful and very transformative.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Hey everyone, Emily Aboudi here you are listening to another
- 0:36Speaker 2: day of conversation over here on Run week on Hurdle.
- 0:40Speaker 2: For today's episode, I am chatting it up with Jess Kang.
- 0:45Speaker 3: She's a longtime friend of mine.
- 0:46Speaker 2: She's also a peloton instructor on both the bike and
- 0:50Speaker 2: more recently the tread and her and I are discussing
- 0:54Speaker 2: her best tips just start and stay running. This episode
- 0:59Speaker 2: is I dylk for people that may have been out
- 1:01Speaker 2: of the game for a little while. Maybe you're brand
- 1:03Speaker 2: new to the sport, maybe you're returning to the sport,
- 1:06Speaker 2: but regardless, it is full of the tips and tricks
- 1:09Speaker 2: that you need to lace up, enjoy the process, and
- 1:13Speaker 2: really put yourself out there and develop a relationship with
- 1:16Speaker 2: this sport of run. Jess talks to us about how
- 1:19Speaker 2: she got involved with running, how it's been a joy
- 1:22Speaker 2: for her to start teaching on the tread at Peloton
- 1:26Speaker 2: and what that experience has taught her. And then we
- 1:29Speaker 2: also cover all the things from the beauty of audio
- 1:33Speaker 2: guided runs and playlists and podcasts to motivate you on
- 1:36Speaker 2: your way, to the importance of both the right gear
- 1:39Speaker 2: and having an understanding that yes, at first this could
- 1:42Speaker 2: be hard, but you are capable of hard things, plus
- 1:47Speaker 2: just so so much more.
- 1:49Speaker 3: A huge thanks to Jess for her time today.

- 2:43Speaker 2: With that, let's get to hurdling.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Today.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I am sitting down with Jess King. She is a
- 2:57Speaker 2: peloton instructor on both the bike and the trail. How
- 3:00Speaker 2: are you doing, my friend?
- 3:02Speaker 1: I'm feeling amazing today. It was my birthday weekend, so
- 3:07Speaker 1: I feel so full of love. We had a very
- 3:10Speaker 1: good time celebrating after not being able to get together
- 3:13Speaker 1: as friends for so long, Like finally, it felt so good.
- 3:17Speaker 1: And I just did a thirty minute Rent run. So
- 3:21Speaker 1: I don't know if you, like me, are obsessed with
- 3:24Speaker 1: the soundtrack to the Broadway musical Rent. I can't think
- 3:28Speaker 1: of a better way to start the day than Seasons
- 3:31Speaker 1: of Love. What about you?
- 3:32Speaker 3: I love Seasons of Love.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I don't know if we're in the loop on this,
- 3:36Speaker 2: but you and I share the same birthday week.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Oh no way, that's right, so happy birthday.
- 3:42Speaker 3: To you too.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Look at us celebrating Geminis now I remember, yeah, yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 2: and I justin and I actually go way back. I've
- 3:51Speaker 2: never done this with another instructor. Back to that twenty
- 3:54Speaker 2: third Street Peloton studio. How long have you and Sophia
- 3:59Speaker 2: been together?
- 4:00Speaker 1: Well, Sophie and I have been together for about six
- 4:02Speaker 1: and a half years, and I've been at Peloton for
- 4:04Speaker 1: seven and so yeah, yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 2: So then about six and a half years ago, I
- 4:10Speaker 2: went up to Jess after taking her class tons of times,
- 4:13Speaker 2: and I asked her if she wanted to hang out sometime,
- 4:15Speaker 2: and so at first, I believe we grabbed like smoothies
- 4:19Speaker 2: after class one day, and then there was this other
- 4:22Speaker 2: lovely time when we went and got Margarita's.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah, tacos and Margarita's, and that was a good night.
- 4:30Speaker 3: That was a great night.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I'm ashamed to say that we have not hung out
- 4:34Speaker 1: really since then. Hello, but yeah, you know, I get
- 4:40Speaker 1: a bad rap sometimes for being like intimidating, and I'm like, yo,
- 4:44Speaker 1: if you just like walk up to me, I'm like, hey,
- 4:46Speaker 1: do you want to hang out?
- 4:47Speaker 2: I'll probably see yeah she said yes to me, so uh,
- 4:52Speaker 2: hot tip, hot tip, go up to dress after the
- 4:55Speaker 2: hang she will probably say yes.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I have one opportunist. I love connecting people, and
- 5:02Speaker 1: I mean back back when Peloton Stars started, every everyone
- 5:06Speaker 1: was new, everything was interesting, and I mean I just
- 5:10Speaker 1: I just wanted to be a part of all of it.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So yeah, that meant getting to know you.
- 5:14Speaker 3: And here we are six six and a half years later.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Yeah, what are we talking about? Let's talk?
- 5:18Speaker 3: Oh my god, yes, let's talk. Let's talk.
- 5:20Speaker 2: So today Jess and I are going to be rapping
- 5:23Speaker 2: about how to really get started with running, how to
- 5:28Speaker 2: get over the hurdle of what can be such an
- 5:31Speaker 2: intimidating process.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I think you and I can both agree that when
- 5:35Speaker 2: we both started on our individual running journeys, there were
- 5:39Speaker 2: a lot of things that were a little scary. So
- 5:41Speaker 2: why don't we kick things off today by you talking
- 5:43Speaker 2: to me a little bit about that. Talk to me
- 5:45Speaker 2: about how you got started on your journey with running.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Okay, So I have two narratives attached to running that
- 5:55Speaker 1: were a precursor to my now current relationship to running.
- 5:59Speaker 1: One it's that my mom used to make me get
- 6:02Speaker 1: up at five am before school and go run with her.
- 6:07Speaker 1: And this is when I was like fourteen. I'd probably
- 6:09Speaker 1: put on like birth control weight or something, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and she was like, you know, you've got to get
- 6:16Speaker 1: up and run. And I remember after like two weeks,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I was like, I'm moving in with Dad. I'm out.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I'm over it. This is a torture at this I'm out.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So I never I never loved it for that reason
- 6:29Speaker 1: because it was like I felt like torture. And then
- 6:32Speaker 1: my second relationship to running would be like when my
- 6:35Speaker 1: life just be goot, just became too much for me
- 6:39Speaker 1: to handle, you know, full transparency. When we first moved
- 6:44Speaker 1: to New York and I was with the wrong dude,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and it was it became very dark, it became very abusive,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and I more than being any sort of victim in
- 6:57Speaker 1: that setting, it was more that I was just ignoring
- 7:00Speaker 1: my instinct, I was knowing my truth, and I was
- 7:04Speaker 1: really swirling. And so I remember I was just like, Okay,
- 7:09Speaker 1: I'm just going to go run, and I would just
- 7:12Speaker 1: you know, when you're like, haven't run in so long
- 7:16Speaker 1: and you run like six ten miles the first day,
- 7:19Speaker 1: You're like, I feel amazing. You're just like flying and
- 7:22Speaker 1: how you legit can't walk for like a good week
- 7:27Speaker 1: and half. That was my relationship to running. So it
- 7:31Speaker 1: was out of punishment and out of like panic and
- 7:38Speaker 1: anxiety and stress and pain. So it was really, it
- 7:42Speaker 1: was a radical thing for me to reclaim it and
- 7:45Speaker 1: to decide that I wanted to develop a healthy relationship
- 7:50Speaker 1: to running and all the potential that lives inside of it.
- 7:55Speaker 3: It's so true. It's so true.
- 7:56Speaker 2: It's a special moment when you decide to put yourself
- 7:59Speaker 2: out out there and develop a legitimate relationship with running,
- 8:04Speaker 2: instead of just listening to that little voice in your
- 8:07Speaker 2: head that may say you can't do this, you're not
- 8:10Speaker 2: a runner, so on, so forth. I also I love
- 8:15Speaker 2: you saying, you know how, you just go out there
- 8:17Speaker 2: one day and you lace up and you run like.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Six or ten miles.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Some people listening to this are like, oh my goodness,
- 8:22Speaker 2: I cannot even imagine going out and running one mile
- 8:25Speaker 2: on a whim.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Nevertheless, six to.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Ten I could have just made that up. I could
- 8:29Speaker 1: have just made that up to be fair.
- 8:31Speaker 3: To be fair.
- 8:32Speaker 2: But I do think it's important to point out that
- 8:34Speaker 2: you are a classically trained dancer, so you had a
- 8:38Speaker 2: serious base of activity and movement well before you decided
- 8:43Speaker 2: to get up, get out, lace up, et cetera.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I cannot deny the fact that I've been
- 8:49Speaker 1: an athlete my whole life. I was a competitive gymnast
- 8:52Speaker 1: up til I was twelve, and I was also a
- 8:56Speaker 1: competitive dancer, and at the age of twelve, I chose
- 8:59Speaker 1: to really focus on danced. And yeah, I would say
- 9:03Speaker 1: that dance is just like any other sport, requires discipline, training, athleticism, strength, flexibility, endurance,
- 9:11Speaker 1: all the things that make you an athlete. However, that
- 9:15Speaker 1: two year period where I was in this really tox relationship,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I was not dancing, I was not working out. I
- 9:23Speaker 1: wasn't eating well. I wasn't I was not doing any
- 9:26Speaker 1: of the things that I that are me right, not
- 9:32Speaker 1: choosing to do anything for myself as this myself that
- 9:38Speaker 1: I had always known myself to be. So no, that
- 9:40Speaker 1: included not moving. I didn't work out for two years.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Of course, there's there's inherent strength built in from years
- 9:49Speaker 1: of a movement practice. And look, I might have exaggerated
- 9:52Speaker 1: six ten months, it probably felt like it. I was
- 9:55Speaker 1: probably lucky to be getting like three.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Okay, So, okay, we've established the basics here. But what
- 10:03Speaker 2: I'm hearing really is for you, running started out as
- 10:08Speaker 2: a way for you to deal with all of this
- 10:11Speaker 2: hard stuff, to deal with the difficult situation that you
- 10:15Speaker 2: were in, revolving around this tough relationship and becoming a
- 10:20Speaker 2: Peloton tread instructor for you was completely out of your
- 10:24Speaker 2: comfort zone and also you kind of coming back into
- 10:28Speaker 2: your own power with the run and learning how to
- 10:31Speaker 2: celebrate it for the good things that it could give
- 10:33Speaker 2: you instead of escaping the bad.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah, totally, you totally nailed that. You know, I am
- 10:40Speaker 1: somebody who unintended runs towards growth opportunities and not don't.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I tried to do the math. I was like, have
- 10:51Speaker 1: I done ten thousand hours on the bike yet? Am
- 10:53Speaker 1: I like an expert? And I don't think I'm even
- 10:56Speaker 1: there yet. But it was that I had been at
- 11:00Speaker 1: the company for five years at this point, and when
- 11:04Speaker 1: I'm hungry for something new, I wanted to be a
- 11:06Speaker 1: beginner again. I love that feeling because when I started Poloton,
- 11:10Speaker 1: that's what it was for me. Everything was new, so
- 11:12Speaker 1: I was bringing my experience and wisdom to the table,
- 11:15Speaker 1: of course, but still learning the technique of cycling was new.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Learning to teach to cameras was new. Learning to create
- 11:23Speaker 1: relationships and build a community was new. I mean literally
- 11:29Speaker 1: every variable, every component about it was new and interesting
- 11:32Speaker 1: to me, and not that I had stagnated or pliate owed.
- 11:36Speaker 1: It's just that I wanted more. And I had a
- 11:40Speaker 1: dream that I was teaching and tread a class and
- 11:44Speaker 1: it felt so real and so right. And I went
- 11:47Speaker 1: the next day and I said, hey, Robin, I had
- 11:50Speaker 1: this dream I was teaching on tread and I really
- 11:52Speaker 1: think I want to do it. What do you think?
- 11:55Speaker 1: And she was like, yeah, I think you'd be great
- 11:58Speaker 1: at that. I'm like, cool, no, Rush, I'll be right back.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And I knew that this was not going to happen overnight.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Got certified, and you know, in that running certification you
- 12:12Speaker 1: learn how to progress a program, you learn how to
- 12:15Speaker 1: scale a runner. And the one thing that I had
- 12:18Speaker 1: I did not have was time on my feet. And
- 12:21Speaker 1: I just needed to be in the practice of running
- 12:24Speaker 1: and have time on my feet and simultaneously adopt my
- 12:27Speaker 1: training program so that I was doing I was strength
- 12:32Speaker 1: training to be able to run smarter and stronger. And
- 12:36Speaker 1: I said, okay, well, who is the smartest trainer that
- 12:38Speaker 1: I know? Andy Spear? And he and I, you know, yeah,
- 12:43Speaker 1: we had been on the same team, but because we
- 12:45Speaker 1: had been in two different studios, never had really like
- 12:48Speaker 1: a chance like to connect, you know, as friends beyond,
- 12:51Speaker 1: just like what's up? And I called him out of
- 12:53Speaker 1: the blow. I was like, hey, will you train me
- 12:56Speaker 1: for the intention of getting you ready to run on
- 12:58Speaker 1: the tread and he was like, yeah, let's do it.
- 13:01Speaker 1: So I worked. You know, he and I worked together
- 13:04Speaker 1: for about a year. Yeah, we'd trained sprint, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 1: we'd work on form. Then I started, But it wasn't
- 13:13Speaker 1: until after that year that I started to actually integrate
- 13:15Speaker 1: onto the tread and then you know, rehearse classes, get feedback,
- 13:20Speaker 1: learn how to build programs. Laddy that a lot of
- 13:24Speaker 1: the same. Being a peloton, there is a unique way
- 13:30Speaker 1: of creating what we do. There's a lot that goes
- 13:32Speaker 1: on behind getting a class out there. And while running
- 13:38Speaker 1: was new, that was already so much for me to
- 13:41Speaker 1: be thinking about the entire time that I was running.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Everything else was the same, right me, communicating, having fun,
- 13:49Speaker 1: having a big ad time, listening to good music, talking
- 13:51Speaker 1: to our members. I had five years of practice there,
- 13:55Speaker 1: you know, six years at this point, and it was
- 13:58Speaker 1: also fun to be in addition to the Dread team
- 14:01Speaker 1: where you had like amazing runners like Becks Gentry, you
- 14:06Speaker 1: have like marathon geniuses like Matt Wolford, you know what
- 14:11Speaker 1: I mean, Like I'm stepping onto a team that are
- 14:14Speaker 1: like the best at the best, you know. Yeah, there
- 14:17Speaker 1: is a little bit of like what am I doing here? Like,
- 14:20Speaker 1: you know, do I even belong?
- 14:22Speaker 3: Like, oh, you belong?
- 14:24Speaker 1: My Max's feed on the tread is like an eight,
- 14:26Speaker 1: and I'm like flying, you know what I mean, And
- 14:29Speaker 1: like you hear that Bex runs her marathons at like
- 14:31Speaker 1: a ten to three at the equivalent of that, and
- 14:34Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't I'm going to go sit down
- 14:37Speaker 1: like you know, actually no, I'm not ben do. I'm
- 14:40Speaker 1: gonna get I'm gonna start running and I'm just going
- 14:42Speaker 1: to try and get faster, and I allow way to
- 14:44Speaker 1: do that is to go faster. So it was new
- 14:46Speaker 1: and it was interesting, and I loved the journey of
- 14:52Speaker 1: it in my body as well, because you know, for
- 14:55Speaker 1: the first six months it was just trying to get
- 14:57Speaker 1: everything from my knee down to adapt and I mean
- 15:03Speaker 1: I was just sore endlessly in my shins and my
- 15:06Speaker 1: caves and my feet. And I still sometimes I'm like
- 15:09Speaker 1: if I take too much time off, end of like
- 15:10Speaker 1: whimpering away the next day. But it's a journey, it's
- 15:15Speaker 1: an evolution, and like I will say, I'm just a
- 15:18Speaker 1: part of the journey now where my butt has gotten
- 15:20Speaker 1: bigger from like running sprints, and I'm going to tell
- 15:24Speaker 1: you lays, engines and non binary and everything between. It's
- 15:28Speaker 1: worth it.
- 15:31Speaker 3: It is worth it. It is worth it.
- 15:33Speaker 2: And that is something that a lot of people don't
- 15:34Speaker 2: talk a lot, is that running sprints and doing that
- 15:37Speaker 2: kind of interval training is the same effect as doing
- 15:41Speaker 2: a heavy leg day. It's a total leg workout, aka
- 15:45Speaker 2: all the booty gains. Okay, okay, So now that we
- 15:48Speaker 2: know a little bit more about your journey with running,
- 15:51Speaker 2: why don't we kick start by talking to this listener,
- 15:55Speaker 2: a newer runner who may just be looking for your
- 15:59Speaker 2: best practice tips for those initial lace ups.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Where do they even start? First of all, just start.
- 16:08Speaker 1: It's not tomorrow, it's not whenever. It's like, if you
- 16:10Speaker 1: have the urge to run, if stot hits you run.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Obviously we're busy, but like, find it, find just find
- 16:17Speaker 1: it and just say I'm going to do it for
- 16:18Speaker 1: ten minutes today. I'm just going to just see if
- 16:21Speaker 1: I can run for ten minutes. If it's on a tread,
- 16:24Speaker 1: if you have ass to a tread, which you know,
- 16:27Speaker 1: yay yay. But walk run is a great place to
- 16:31Speaker 1: start a little bit of walking, a little bit of running,
- 16:33Speaker 1: a little bit of walking, a little bit of running,
- 16:34Speaker 1: just so that you build a relationship with again, time
- 16:38Speaker 1: on your feet, that's what it is, right, time on
- 16:41Speaker 1: your feet. Then the technique comes, then the endurance comes,
- 16:45Speaker 1: then the power comes in the distance. I am more
- 16:49Speaker 1: of a sprint runner. Like my sprint's probably not fast.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I prefer to go fast for a short amount of
- 16:56Speaker 1: time then to go slower for a long amount of time.
- 16:59Speaker 1: But as a beginner, you know, I think a lot
- 17:03Speaker 1: of times people think that it's going to be enjoyable,
- 17:08Speaker 1: like it's just going to click and then one day
- 17:10Speaker 1: it's going to be great. No maybe maybe for outliers,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I don't know. I will say the one thing that
- 17:20Speaker 1: that called me to run as our community, the one
- 17:23Speaker 1: thing that called another thing that called me into running,
- 17:26Speaker 1: is the chance to run as a team, to run together.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And look, at the end of the day, it's on
- 17:34Speaker 1: my calendar, it's part of my job. I show up
- 17:36Speaker 1: and I do it. It requires that many things to
- 17:41Speaker 1: get me to run, and once I'm there, I'm enjoyed
- 17:44Speaker 1: once I'm done. It's a joyful thing. But get out
- 17:48Speaker 1: of the mindset that this is going to just come
- 17:52Speaker 1: easy or naturally, or that you're going to feel great
- 17:56Speaker 1: not I think running is the hardest thing that I do.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Out of all the things that I do, I think
- 18:03Speaker 1: Friday is definitely most challenging.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love
- 18:15Speaker 2: to my sponsor at Tracksmith. Tracksmith is a Boston based
- 18:18Speaker 2: performance running brand dedicated to the community, style, and culture
- 18:22Speaker 2: of running. Putting on my Tracksmith year makes me feel sleek.
- 18:26Speaker 2: It makes me feel fast and fit, and that may
- 18:30Speaker 2: sound a little silly, but even the science shows that
- 18:33Speaker 2: when you feel good, you perform better. On top of
- 18:37Speaker 2: just feeling good about my gear, I feel really amped
- 18:39Speaker 2: about this partnership because it's unlike anyone that I've done before.
- 18:43Speaker 2: The company is offering to donate five percent of every
- 18:47Speaker 2: purchase using the code Hurdle back to Girls on the
- 18:50Speaker 2: Run to help drive change. You'll also get free shipping
- 18:54Speaker 2: on your order as well. Now y'all know that one
- 18:56Speaker 2: of my mottos, one of the phrases that I live
- 19:00Speaker 2: my life by, is do good, and this partnership just
- 19:03Speaker 2: couldn't be more of a perfect fit for me. Now
- 19:06Speaker 2: I chose Girls on the Run. I really love what
- 19:08Speaker 2: they are all about. Running helped me so much come
- 19:11Speaker 2: into my own find independence, become confident at such a
- 19:15Speaker 2: critical time in my life, and I can only imagine
- 19:18Speaker 2: what it would have been like to learn in some
- 19:20Speaker 2: of these lessons a little bit earlier on. Girls on
- 19:22Speaker 2: the Run is all about integrating movement as a tool
- 19:25Speaker 2: to strengthen a sense of confidence in young girls while
- 19:28Speaker 2: fostering care and compassion for self and others, And that
- 19:32Speaker 2: is my jam. Be sure to check out Tracksmith's new
- 19:36Speaker 2: summer collection featuring styles for training and racing and hot weather.

- 20:04Speaker 2: Use code hurdle today to get free shipping and support
- 20:07Speaker 2: Girls on the run, I hear so many things from
- 20:19Speaker 2: all the goodness that you just shared. First and foremost,
- 20:22Speaker 2: just start. Oftentimes that is the most difficult part. And
- 20:26Speaker 2: then next, most importantly perhaps is that it's not going
- 20:30Speaker 2: to be easy, period, end done. You have to accept
- 20:35Speaker 2: that getting uncomfortable and putting yourself out there and going
- 20:39Speaker 2: for that first run it will be challenging. But with time,
- 20:43Speaker 2: that challenge is going to bring you great reward. And
- 20:46Speaker 2: of course I do also want to make sure I
- 20:48Speaker 2: throw in this caveat to the mix that if you
- 20:50Speaker 2: do feel physical pain when you're going for your first
- 20:54Speaker 2: few runs, then certainly certainly reach out to a physical
- 20:59Speaker 2: therapist or someone like an expert that can perhaps look
- 21:02Speaker 2: at your form, just like what just did while working
- 21:06Speaker 2: with Andy Spear.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Yeah. I think one of the big takeaways in my
- 21:12Speaker 1: you know, getting into running and the discomfort of it
- 21:14Speaker 1: was learning okay, not all hurt is harmful, and learning
- 21:22Speaker 1: to distinguish what is an injury, what is over use?
- 21:25Speaker 1: What is what is begging to take a break or
- 21:28Speaker 1: because it's like too fatigued, and my form is you know,
- 21:31Speaker 1: getting trashed or whatever, and what is just my mental discomfort?
- 21:36Speaker 1: What is what is not even the sweet spot, but
- 21:40Speaker 1: like that threshold place like maybe I'm just there, you know.
- 21:44Speaker 1: So learning to distinguish what is pain and injury versus
- 21:48Speaker 1: what is just discomfort and where growth is and that
- 21:52Speaker 1: is again a learned experience you develop over time. And
- 21:57Speaker 1: yet I also had pet I go my PT every
- 21:59Speaker 1: week and he puts me back together.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Shout out to Adam. Shout out to Adam, Shout out
- 22:04Speaker 3: to Adam.
- 22:04Speaker 2: So something else that you highlighted here that is so
- 22:07Speaker 2: important for you, so helpful for you and can be
- 22:10Speaker 2: super helpful for others is the concept of community, whether
- 22:13Speaker 2: that is a community like the Peloton community, or perhaps
- 22:16Speaker 2: a local run club, a local run group, a friend,
- 22:19Speaker 2: a family member. Finding someone else to share the miles
- 22:24Speaker 2: with to talk about what you're going through from the
- 22:27Speaker 2: get go can be the biggest game changer period end
- 22:31Speaker 2: of story.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Community has built in accountability, and that's ultimately what we're
- 22:36Speaker 1: looking for, right is that there's somebody who's like, I'm
- 22:38Speaker 1: waiting for you, meet me here. We're going to do
- 22:41Speaker 1: this and get it done, and I'm going to be
- 22:44Speaker 1: with you along the way. Some of the coolest communities
- 22:47Speaker 1: I've had the pleasure of meeting or some of the
- 22:50Speaker 1: running clubs in New York.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Yo, do you want to meet cool people?
- 22:54Speaker 1: Join a running club in New York, the most beautiful,
- 22:59Speaker 1: dope individuals down to earth and yeah. And then of
- 23:03Speaker 1: course the Peloton community is just so so powerful. The
- 23:07Speaker 1: relationships extend beyond being in class, right, So like people
- 23:12Speaker 1: have tags and groups that they ride with, and they
- 23:15Speaker 1: meet and they swarm things, and they set up their
- 23:18Speaker 1: five k's and their dis and they're that and I mean,
- 23:20Speaker 1: it is just astounding to see how our community has
- 23:25Speaker 1: just embraced our content and us as instructors, and ultimately
- 23:32Speaker 1: they're feeling the impact on their bodies and their lives.
- 23:36Speaker 1: And it's working. It's work.
- 23:38Speaker 3: It's working. It's working.
- 23:39Speaker 2: And something else that you highlighted before that I think
- 23:41Speaker 2: is the utmost critical thing that we can cover right now,
- 23:45Speaker 2: is the importance and benefit of embracing the walk run.
- 23:50Speaker 2: There is no point in your running journey where you
- 23:53Speaker 2: are above this tactic. Let me be honest with you.
- 23:56Speaker 2: I think about a year ago, maybe I was dealing
- 23:58Speaker 2: with some hip pain, struggling through some nasty injury stuff,
- 24:01Speaker 2: and when I finally got to the place where I
- 24:03Speaker 2: was ready to pick back up with the run. Even
- 24:06Speaker 2: though I have been a quote unquote runner for thirteen
- 24:08Speaker 2: years now, I did so with the walk run for
- 24:12Speaker 2: at least I don't know about a month long period.
- 24:15Speaker 2: That tactic putting your pride aside and bracing that this
- 24:19Speaker 2: can be good for you. That is so so important
- 24:22Speaker 2: runners can walk period.
- 24:27Speaker 3: End of story.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Yeah, totally. And look, it sounds like the person we're
- 24:33Speaker 1: speaking to that we're trying to encourage to get moving,
- 24:37Speaker 1: to start going, is just looking to have some fun,
- 24:42Speaker 1: right Like, Look, if you want to run a marathon
- 24:45Speaker 1: out the gate, you can do that. But like it
- 24:48Speaker 1: feels like ultimately the reminder is that this is supposed
- 24:52Speaker 1: to be fun. So never mind the miles, never mind
- 24:58Speaker 1: the speed, Celebrate the fact that you got laysd up,
- 25:01Speaker 1: that you got moving. Put on the best music. And
- 25:05Speaker 1: that's why, you know, that's why I do what I do,
- 25:07Speaker 1: because I wouldn't run if I don't have somebody like
- 25:10Speaker 1: me being like, let's go right, So I mean, you know,
- 25:16Speaker 1: I mean, I can't say it enough. Down with the app,
- 25:18Speaker 1: Run with us, Run with us. If you want to
- 25:20Speaker 1: have some fun, if you want to listen to good music,
- 25:24Speaker 1: run with me if you want to learn all the
- 25:27Speaker 1: techniques to running marathon race PEP prep. We even have
- 25:32Speaker 1: beginner run program. Oh it's so funny. You can run
- 25:35Speaker 1: and we literally scale you through intervals, starting with of course,
- 25:40Speaker 1: the walk, run hello, and then or jogging and then
- 25:44Speaker 1: you develop the run. So you know, I I wouldn't
- 25:49Speaker 1: do it alone. I don't do it alone. It requires
- 25:53Speaker 1: good music, It requires a reason, you know, a reason
- 25:58Speaker 1: to show up. My reason as a community. My reason
- 26:01Speaker 1: is also selfish, right. I love to be in training
- 26:05Speaker 1: at all times. I'm all constantly training, whether it's to
- 26:08Speaker 1: be a better runner, to you know, improve whatever I'm
- 26:12Speaker 1: doing in the gym, whether it's like my squad, my
- 26:14Speaker 1: pull ups or whatever that is. But like have a
- 26:18Speaker 1: reason to get moving something that excites you, you know, and
- 26:21Speaker 1: then make it fun. Like I show up and maybe
- 26:25Speaker 1: I'm too much for some people, because I'm like, no,
- 26:28Speaker 1: we are not going to suffer today. We are going
- 26:31Speaker 1: to make the most fun out of this. I promise
- 26:33Speaker 1: you can do it. I'm gonna be with you the
- 26:34Speaker 1: whole time. And that's just how it is, you know.
- 26:37Speaker 1: So I've heard a lot of stories and testimonials from
- 26:42Speaker 1: individuals who also work terrified of running, and then they
- 26:45Speaker 1: got started and it was the walk run and now
- 26:49Speaker 1: you know, they're running a three k, they're doing it,
- 26:53Speaker 1: they're pushing or five k and they're they're breaking prs
- 26:58Speaker 1: and they're meeting other people along the way. It's just
- 27:00Speaker 1: the coolest thing to be a part of. And Yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 1: while I had all of that on the bike, this
- 27:07Speaker 1: was cool because it was the first time that I
- 27:11Speaker 1: had to be pretty vulnerable and say, hey, I've never
- 27:14Speaker 1: I've never done this before. I might not be very
- 27:17Speaker 1: good at this, but let's see what happened.
- 27:19Speaker 2: You know, I love that. I love that. And something
- 27:22Speaker 2: you touched on here is super important. Audio guided runs
- 27:24Speaker 2: can be a huge, huge, huge helping hand for someone
- 27:28Speaker 2: that knows that they want to run but doesn't really
- 27:31Speaker 2: know how to format it or break it up. It
- 27:33Speaker 2: can be that extra motivation someone in your ear to
- 27:36Speaker 2: get your foot out the door. And of course, if
- 27:39Speaker 2: an audio guided run may not be your cup of tea,
- 27:42Speaker 2: but you love to listen to a certain playlist, a
- 27:44Speaker 2: certain kind of music, a certain podcast, like whatever it
- 27:48Speaker 2: is that motivates you to be your best, you go
- 27:51Speaker 2: for it, just like dive into that head first to
- 27:54Speaker 2: supplement whatever it is that you're going after. So aside
- 27:57Speaker 2: from that, what other tip would you give to person? Okay,
- 28:00Speaker 2: they're up, they're out the door, they've started running. What's
- 28:03Speaker 2: the next thing that you tell them to do so
- 28:06Speaker 2: that they stay running?
- 28:08Speaker 3: Oftentimes, I'll just give my two cents here.
- 28:11Speaker 2: I tell people that a great way to keep running
- 28:14Speaker 2: is to mix things up, to diversify your training so
- 28:17Speaker 2: that you can stave off boredom and keep things interesting.
- 28:21Speaker 3: What do you think.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I mean, that's for sure. And if you're a Pelotion member,
- 28:25Speaker 1: then mixing up your instructors is also going to change
- 28:27Speaker 1: it up, give you fresh perspective and you know, hear
- 28:30Speaker 1: something differently for the first time. That's going to change something.
- 28:35Speaker 1: But you know, I was actually not going to go
- 28:36Speaker 1: there at all, and I was going to say, make
- 28:39Speaker 1: sure you have good shoots.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Yes, yes, gear so important.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Like at first, I was like pretty like fashion oriented
- 28:46Speaker 1: about it. And you know, I'm not like sponsored or
- 28:50Speaker 1: anything like that. But I'll just tell you, hokahs are
- 28:52Speaker 1: where it's at. That's for me.
- 28:54Speaker 3: I love a hopa personally.
- 28:55Speaker 1: For me, I mean, the impact is huge. I feel
- 28:57Speaker 1: safe in my run, but Yeah, that was actually a
- 29:01Speaker 1: big learning for me, switching up the times, so like
- 29:06Speaker 1: doing a twenty minute run a thirty minute run, going
- 29:11Speaker 1: for longer amounts of time, you know, keeping it spicy
- 29:15Speaker 1: in that way. And you know, look, if you want
- 29:19Speaker 1: to improve your run, if you want to improve any
- 29:22Speaker 1: any sort of endurance activity or you know, cardiovascular type sport,
- 29:29Speaker 1: get stronger, get stronger, do your lateral work, do your
- 29:34Speaker 1: warm ups, don't be sleeping on your warm ups, don't
- 29:37Speaker 1: not stretch, and you know, you've got to be doing
- 29:41Speaker 1: the things that are going to support your goals so
- 29:44Speaker 1: that you can feel safe. Like I want, I want
- 29:47Speaker 1: our runners, I want anybody out there running to feel
- 29:49Speaker 1: good in their body. And running is ballistic, Okay, is
- 29:54Speaker 1: it is? It is a categorically ballistic activity, and especially
- 29:58Speaker 1: if you're running outside, you've got to take care of
- 30:01Speaker 1: your joints and the best way to do that is
- 30:04Speaker 1: to make the muscles around them stronger.
- 30:07Speaker 3: So this is Jess on her soapbox.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Honestly, my goal for the rest of today is really
- 30:15Speaker 2: just to use ballistic in a sentence in any way possible.
- 30:20Speaker 2: You're welcome, pass it on, pass it on, okay, Okay, Jaz,
- 30:26Speaker 2: tell me, do you have any other parting wisdom that
- 30:29Speaker 2: you want to leave the hurdlers with when it comes
- 30:32Speaker 2: to lacing up and getting out and enjoying it.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I would just say to all the hurdlers out there,
- 30:42Speaker 1: no matter what your relationship to running is currently, it's
- 30:47Speaker 1: going to evolve, and I long for you to just
- 30:53Speaker 1: be in it. The highs, the lows, the cold weather,
- 30:59Speaker 1: the days you can great, the days you feel slow.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Just know it's part of a whole journey. It's part
- 31:05Speaker 1: of a complete experience. If there was any one way
- 31:09Speaker 1: that anything should be, it would be that it is
- 31:12Speaker 1: inclusive of all of it. Embrace it, be with it,
- 31:16Speaker 1: and know that it's not going to last forever. You're
- 31:18Speaker 1: going to get stronger or things are going to happen,
- 31:21Speaker 1: that you're always going to have this foundation of coming
- 31:23Speaker 1: home to your breast, being in your body and really
- 31:27Speaker 1: really deeply connecting with a powerful piece of yourself. The
- 31:32Speaker 1: ability to run can save your life. The ability to
- 31:36Speaker 1: run gives you agency in your body. You can trust
- 31:41Speaker 1: yourself to move, to be agile, to get away from
- 31:46Speaker 1: danger if you need to. So it's not for negotiation
- 31:51Speaker 1: whether or not you should run or it's more of
- 31:57Speaker 1: a commitment to just nurture in this relationship with yourself,
- 32:02Speaker 1: because once you make the decision to start running, I
- 32:05Speaker 1: hope that you fall in love with it and it
- 32:08Speaker 1: maybe doesn't feel the greatest all the time, but that's
- 32:11Speaker 1: part of the wholeness of the experience and it can
- 32:14Speaker 1: be really beautiful and very transformative.
- 32:17Speaker 3: I love that. I love that.
- 32:18Speaker 2: I'm so grateful for you, Jess. Thanks so much for
- 32:22Speaker 2: your time today. How do the hurdlers keep up with you?
- 32:24Speaker 2: How do they follow along with you? Give me the details.
- 32:27Speaker 1: Thank you so much for having me. It was a
- 32:28Speaker 1: pleasure to talk about it. I don't even know if
- 32:31Speaker 1: I knew I felt that way about you.
- 32:34Speaker 3: And then you get her talking.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Yeah, please join me on my Instagram, Jess King NYC.
- 32:41Speaker 1: And yeah, you can keep up with all the things
- 32:44Speaker 1: that I'm doing and promote my classes there. I give
- 32:48Speaker 1: you know, every now and again, I'll get this like
- 32:50Speaker 1: intuitive insight and want to share something a little more
- 32:53Speaker 1: vulnerable and personal. And Sophie and I just started our
- 32:58Speaker 1: own cooking show, umami, and I mean, I hope y'all
- 33:02Speaker 1: have a good time watching it, but we are certainly
- 33:04Speaker 1: having a good time creating it. So yeah, you can follow.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Along, and follow along we will.
- 33:09Speaker 2: I'm over at Hurdle Podcast and at Emily a Body
- 33:12Speaker 2: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
