- 0:35Welcome everyone to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series. I'm Mariah Mohammed,
- 0:40she her pronouns with Becker's Healthcare.
- 0:42I'm thrilled to have with me today Dr. Anus Vora,
- 0:45medical director of emergency services in the northwest region of Hartford
- 0:49Healthcare. Doctor, it's so nice to talk with you today. How are you? Hey.
- 0:53I am doing great, Mariah. Glad to be here today and thank you for having me.
- 0:57Yeah, of course. Well, to begin,
- 0:59would you mind please introducing yourself and telling us a bit about your
- 1:02background?
- 1:04Sure.
- 1:04So I've been the chair medical director of Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for the
- 1:08past three and a half years. Um,
- 1:11I'm the medical director for the Northwest region,
- 1:13also overseeing a freestanding ed.
- 1:15I've been practicing for over 18 years now in emergency medicine. Uh,
- 1:20I've gotten to some great opportunities in my career to open up a residency
- 1:23program and run large emergency departments and uh, I just, you know,
- 1:28I feel very privileged to be where I am today.
- 1:31Yeah, absolutely. And congratulations on 18 years. That is amazing. Um,
- 1:36and with all that experience, I'm sure you're very familiar with Grow,
- 1:39growing a, an organization and growing a program. For you,
- 1:44what is your growth strategy for the next year or two?
- 1:48You know, so much has str has changed since I graduated from residency. We,
- 1:52you know,
- 1:52back then it was all about getting the hospitals to fill up with beds and get
- 1:56admissions.
- 1:56So those revenues for the facilities to now really focus on outpatient and
- 2:01reducing inpatient volume.
- 2:03Our facilities are typically quite full and pouring into the emergency
- 2:07department. Um,
- 2:08so some focuses we have are reducing length of stays and more importantly,
- 2:13increasing outpatient access to healthcare. You know,
- 2:17we see so many specialty services that have three to six month waits and primary
- 2:21care doctors that can't get patients in.
- 2:23So we're actively trying to expand those practices for primary care especially
- 2:28and, uh, specialty care as well. Uh,
- 2:31we're really trying to drive great medicine and healthcare to outpatient
- 2:35services versus inpatient services.
- 2:39Absolutely. Thank you so much for that. And can you tell us, uh,
- 2:43about the most exciting and impactful initiative or project you're currently
- 2:48working on right now?
- 2:50Sure.
- 2:50So my two facilities are in the northwest region of Connecticut and they're
- 2:55borderline rural facilities. Um,
- 2:58we don't have any trauma facilities very close to us and actually the state of
- 3:02Connecticut where we live, uh, does not have any level four trauma facilities.
- 3:07So I'm currently working on, um,
- 3:09developing our site as the first level four trauma center in the state of
- 3:12Connecticut and hoping that other places will, um,
- 3:16then be able to use that as a stepping stone to enhance their care delivery
- 3:21model for patients, uh,
- 3:23affected by trauma that may not have quick access to a level one or level two
- 3:27facility. So I'm pretty excited about that.
- 3:30Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:31That is definitely important initiative we're working on right now. Um,
- 3:35and before I let you go, doctor,
- 3:37the last thing that I wanted to ask you is for you,
- 3:39what is the most important thing healthcare executives should do now to make
- 3:44sure their organizations are successful in the,
- 3:46in the short term or long term future?
- 3:50You know, coming out of this great resignation that we've just, uh,
- 3:53dealt with and continue to struggle with,
- 3:56I think healthcare organizations have to do their best to retain the great
- 4:01providers and,
- 4:02and nurses and staff and facilities that we have right now and
- 4:07get overly creative in ways that we can expand upon what we have
- 4:12over the next few years to really looking at about a five to 10 year horizon.
- 4:17Uh,
- 4:18some of the things we're doing is not only partnering with medical schools and
- 4:21nursing schools and starting nursing graduate programs,
- 4:25but we're also going to local high schools, uh,
- 4:28for children that may not necessarily wanna go to college yet to get them
- 4:32ingrained into a hospital could,
- 4:35could be doing cook work or security services or janitorial work,
- 4:39just something to get their feet wet, even if it's not clinical healthcare.
- 4:44And from there people often get interested and,
- 4:47and get motivated and empowered to stay in healthcare,
- 4:51maybe go back to school for, you know, for something in, uh,
- 4:55nursing or medical. And we actually do tuition reimbursement, uh,
- 4:59for those people that are with us full-time. So we're trying to find young,
- 5:04motivated individuals that will help us build a better future,
- 5:07especially in times like now where the workforce has been significantly
- 5:12diminished. So I think what's key is just looking to the future,
- 5:17um, by looking at our kids right now to help us build.
- 5:21Wonderful. Thank you so much for those final thoughts. Doctor,
- 5:24this has been an amazing discussion.
- 5:27I really wanna thank you for coming on Becker's Healthcare to talk about all of
- 5:30this, and I look forward to connecting with you again soon.
