- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:08This is Finding God at Work, episode zero.
- 0:13Just want to give a brief intro to
- 0:15what the podcast is about before we start
- 0:17digging in with episode one.
- 0:19And the main idea of the podcast is
- 0:20right there in the title, Finding God at
- 0:23Work.
- 0:24So we are finding God in our workplaces,
- 0:27in our job, whatever it is we do
- 0:28for a living, whatever we do to put
- 0:30food on the table, how can that be
- 0:32part of our life with God?
- 0:35And then second meaning, finding God at work,
- 0:38finding what God is up to in the
- 0:40world.
- 0:41What is God's mission in the world?
- 0:42What is he doing?
- 0:43And the main idea of the podcast is
- 0:45that those two different understandings of finding God
- 0:48at work are not so far apart from
- 0:50each other, that we can find God in
- 0:53our workplaces and the work we do every
- 0:55day can become part of what God is
- 0:58doing in the world.
- 0:58And so in both meanings, we can find
- 1:02God at work.
- 1:06I want to share just a smidge about
- 1:07my own personal story because I fell into
- 1:10leading a ministry called Mission Central, of which
- 1:13this is a production kind of by accident.
- 1:16And the vision for that ministry is forming
- 1:18Christians for mission in everyday life, including their
- 1:22jobs.
- 1:23And my lifelong ambition since I was 12
- 1:26years old was to become a pastor.
- 1:27And here I am 20 years later, I'm
- 1:2932 years old, and I'm still not a
- 1:31pastor.
- 1:32I have a seminary degree, I have a
- 1:33student group in my church.
- 1:35But what I do for a day job
- 1:36is I work at the regional food bank,
- 1:38and I used to work at a mortgage
- 1:39company before that.
- 1:41That was totally unexpected in my career and
- 1:44vocational journey.
- 1:45Right out of school, I was in quote
- 1:47unquote full-time ministry.
- 1:48I worked at a church and then at
- 1:49a college ministry.
- 1:50I was planning to do that forever.
- 1:52I was never planning on not being a
- 1:54full-time professional Christian, but God had other
- 1:56plans.
- 1:58Because my wife Katie faced a series of
- 2:00health crises, and I was also facing certain
- 2:02challenges, we just had a need for me
- 2:04to have a normal day job for a
- 2:05while.
- 2:05So that's when I pivoted, got the job
- 2:07at the mortgage company, and I was faced
- 2:09for the first time in my life with
- 2:11figuring out, what am I supposed to do
- 2:14as a disciple of Jesus Christ when I
- 2:16spend 40 or more hours a week doing
- 2:18something that doesn't feel very spiritual?
- 2:20I was working on mortgage data.
- 2:22I was helping with things like processing problems
- 2:25with the mortgages, and I was working with
- 2:28some people who were Christians and some people
- 2:29who weren't Christians.
- 2:31And it was very, very different than the
- 2:32stuff I'd been doing in, say, college ministry,
- 2:34when it was literally my job to just
- 2:35have spiritual conversations with people pretty much all
- 2:38day.
- 2:38And that was really fun, and I enjoyed
- 2:40that because I'm that kind of person.
- 2:41I enjoy having those conversations.
- 2:43And so I'd just gone from having all
- 2:45of these conversations with Gen Z college students
- 2:48about their spiritual lives and that being my
- 2:50job to now reporting to boomer managers at
- 2:54a mortgage company and being like, what's the
- 2:57spiritual meaning of this?
- 2:58I don't know if that connects with you
- 2:59at all.
- 3:00Many people, many disciples of Jesus, most disciples
- 3:03of Jesus work a job that doesn't necessarily
- 3:06explicitly have to do with the kingdom of
- 3:10God.
- 3:10And that can lead to the sense of
- 3:12almost like varsity and JV Christianity.
- 3:14Like the varsity team are the pastors and
- 3:16the missionaries and the college ministers and the
- 3:18people doing social justice work, you know, all
- 3:20that good stuff.
- 3:22And then there's the rest of us who
- 3:23like to have normal day jobs and make
- 3:24money and put food on the table for
- 3:26our families and maybe give to those ministries.
- 3:28And maybe we share our faith with a
- 3:30coworker every once in a while, but there
- 3:31can kind of be this sense of a
- 3:32disconnect that our life with God is on
- 3:35one side of the wall and our life
- 3:36at work is on the other side of
- 3:37the wall.
- 3:38And my prayer for this podcast is that
- 3:40God would tear that wall down, that God
- 3:42would help you see that you can have
- 3:44a fully integrated life as a disciple of
- 3:47Jesus Christ with him at your day job.
- 3:50You can find God at work.
- 3:52We have two main angles of coming at
- 3:54this question about finding God at work.
- 3:57So one angle is spiritual formation, this idea
- 4:00that all of us are on a journey
- 4:01of becoming a certain kind of human being.
- 4:04And this word has been used in a
- 4:05variety of contexts.
- 4:07I often cite the author Dallas Willard.
- 4:09And so we'll get lots of quotes from
- 4:11Dallas Willard along with many other women and
- 4:13men, saints and thinkers and leaders of the
- 4:15Christian tradition.
- 4:17But that's kind of where I'm coming from
- 4:18for the spiritual formation conversation.
- 4:20So if you're kind of wondering what my
- 4:22theological angle is, it's very much informed by
- 4:24Dallas Willard and his ideas.
- 4:26But his main idea is that the main
- 4:29thing God gets out of your life is
- 4:31not the achievements you accomplish, but the person
- 4:34you become.
- 4:36And I think that's essential for talking about
- 4:37our work because if we don't have that
- 4:39first grounding of we're becoming a certain kind
- 4:41of human being and everything else gets out
- 4:44of whack and it's not ultimately fruitful in
- 4:46God's kingdom.
- 4:48Our second angle for looking at all this
- 4:49is the idea of mission.
- 4:52God is on a mission in the world.
- 4:54God is doing things in the world.
- 4:56God cares about justice and beauty and healing
- 4:58and proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ
- 5:01crucified for our sins and risen from the
- 5:03dead on the third day.
- 5:05And that is really exciting that God has
- 5:08a mission in the world.
- 5:09And our everyday jobs, even if they are
- 5:12not explicitly spiritual, even if you're a plumber
- 5:16or a bus driver or a mortgage person
- 5:18like I used to be or a food
- 5:20banker or a teacher or whatever your job
- 5:22is, your job itself, the work itself can
- 5:25be part of God's mission in the world.
- 5:26And so we're going to talk about that
- 5:27and how God is on a mission to
- 5:30foster the beauty of creation and human flourishing
- 5:33and our jobs are part of that and
- 5:34that's amazing.
- 5:36And also as disciples of Jesus, we want
- 5:38to be about the work of sharing the
- 5:40good news of Jesus and sometimes our jobs
- 5:42are really good context for doing that.
- 5:44Now that's not the only thing that matters
- 5:45but we'll talk about that too because I
- 5:47know many people I talk to, they want
- 5:49to grow in confidence and sharing their faith
- 5:51in the workplace.
- 5:52So we'll talk about really practical ways you
- 5:53can do that as well.
- 5:56Now my journey of figuring out how to
- 5:59be a disciple of Jesus in a job
- 6:01that is not explicitly spiritual has been so
- 6:04rich and I thought it was a detour.
- 6:07I thought it was something that somehow had
- 6:08thrown off God's vocational plan for my life.
- 6:12And there was deep grief as part of
- 6:14that process.
- 6:14Those of you who know me personally know
- 6:16that struggling through that question of am I
- 6:18ever going to be a pastor has been
- 6:20a real difficult sticking point in my life.
- 6:23And maybe you too have the experience of
- 6:24kind of the death of a vocational dream
- 6:26and having to meet God in the middle
- 6:29of the shambles and the ashes of that
- 6:31dream.
- 6:32That's an important experience that we'll touch on
- 6:34as well as how do we make sense
- 6:35of this idea of calling and the work
- 6:37of God when our story doesn't go the
- 6:39way that we thought it was going to
- 6:40go.
- 6:41But in the middle of all that pain
- 6:43and all those questions I have found that
- 6:45God loves doing stuff at my day job
- 6:48and it's exciting and it's amazing and it
- 6:51counts.
- 6:52It counts in the kingdom of God.
- 6:53It counts as a loving God and neighbor
- 6:54and I'm more passionate about it than I've
- 6:56ever been before.
- 6:57So at this point I'm almost like maybe
- 7:00I'll be a pastor someday but am I
- 7:01even going to want to quit my job
- 7:02if I do become a pastor someday because
- 7:04God does so much amazing stuff in the
- 7:06day job job.
- 7:07I don't want to miss out on that.
- 7:09And so it's totally changed my perspective rather
- 7:12than seeing the day job as a detour
- 7:13or an obstacle or a problem.
- 7:16I now see it as a place for
- 7:18meeting God for living life with God for
- 7:21living on the mission of God just as
- 7:23much as any other place just as much
- 7:25as any quote unquote ministry activity.
- 7:27So that change for me has been incredibly
- 7:30joyful and gratifying and encouraging and my prayer
- 7:34for you whether you're a professional Christian or
- 7:36not is that you can find God in
- 7:39your work.
- 7:40That you can experience this kind of transformation
- 7:43where your work is not separate from your
- 7:46life with God.
- 7:47Where God tears the wall down so that
- 7:49he can be with you every minute you're
- 7:52at work.
- 7:53And that's not just about you that's also
- 7:55about the people you work with and the
- 7:57people you work for.
- 7:58Your co-workers your clients even your competitors.
- 8:02God loves them.
- 8:03Those people are all created in the image
- 8:05of God and there's incredible potential for how
- 8:07you can touch those lives as you live
- 8:11as a disciple of Jesus in your workplace.
- 8:13So we're going to talk about all of
- 8:14those things.
- 8:15We're going to talk about it from the
- 8:16spiritual formation angle.
- 8:17We're going to talk about it from the
- 8:18mission angle and hopefully we're going to have
- 8:20some fun along the way.
- 8:21Okay just a few things about the podcast
- 8:23format.
- 8:24As you can tell in my voice I
- 8:26am really energetic sometimes.
- 8:28Full disclosure I also sometimes struggle with depression.
- 8:30That was also true when I was recording
- 8:31some of the early episodes.
- 8:33So my affect may be a little bit
- 8:35different from episode to episode.
- 8:37I just figured I'll be transparent about that
- 8:39but in general I find that energy place
- 8:40by God's grace.
- 8:42My mental health journey is part of my
- 8:43whole journey with Jesus as I'm sure is
- 8:45true for many of you too and we'll
- 8:47get around to talking about mental health in
- 8:49the workplace as disciples of Jesus among other
- 8:51things in our future series.
- 8:53Each episode is roughly going to be 15
- 8:55minutes long.
- 8:56Sometimes a little bit longer usually no more
- 8:58than 20.
- 8:59So if maybe this is something you listen
- 9:01to on a morning commute you can just
- 9:02kind of plan on that.
- 9:03We're going to release this twice a week
- 9:05other than the first few episodes we're kind
- 9:07of doing a batch release just to make
- 9:08that easier so people can get a feel
- 9:10for the podcast.
- 9:11But normally it's going to be two episodes
- 9:12a week usually on Tuesday and then Thursday.
- 9:16And the main format is me sharing my
- 9:18thoughts from the scriptures from other great Christian
- 9:21thinkers just trying to put together in really
- 9:23practical way how we can find God at
- 9:25work.
- 9:26So it is mostly me talking.
- 9:28It's not primarily an interview based podcast although
- 9:31we'll hopefully have a chance to sprinkle some
- 9:32interviews in here and there.
- 9:34So just so you know what you're signing
- 9:36up for if you want to try and
- 9:37listen to it.
- 9:37But we also want it to be interactive.
- 9:39So in as much as you care and
- 9:41you want to send me your thoughts you
- 9:43can reach me on our website missioncentral.church.
- 9:47We would love to hear from you.
- 9:48We're also going to add resources on the
- 9:50website that tie in with the episodes.
- 9:52And then we have other resources as well
- 9:53that are part of the rest of our
- 9:54ministry that you can explore there.
- 9:56We have a blog.
- 9:57I lead courses in person in the Illinois
- 9:59Fox Valley area.
- 10:01We're going to have an online course launching
- 10:03relatively soon as well also called Finding God
- 10:05at Work.
- 10:06So stay tuned for all that if you're
- 10:08interested.
- 10:09But I'll also be ending every episode in
- 10:11prayer.
- 10:12So I just want to do that now
- 10:13to kind of anoint the entire series in
- 10:16prayer knowing that ultimately it's not about finding
- 10:19Chris.
- 10:19It's not about you or me.
- 10:21It's about us coming into the reality of
- 10:24the kingdom of God.
- 10:25And God is good and God is generous
- 10:27and God is at work.
- 10:29So let's pray.
- 10:32Jesus thank you for your good news that
- 10:35you did die and rise again for us
- 10:38and that good news is relevant to every
- 10:40aspect of our life including our lives at
- 10:42work.
- 10:44We pray for your grace that you would
- 10:46minister to us in the real difficulties we
- 10:48face at the workplace in the real power
- 10:51that you give us to love you and
- 10:53to love others that we would not miss
- 10:55out on what you are doing in our
- 10:56workplaces and that we would just be so
- 10:58free to see every part of our lives
- 11:02including our lives at work as part of
- 11:04our life with you.
- 11:05That you would get rid of the divisions
- 11:07and the categories that prevent us from living
- 11:10that way and you would help us to
- 11:11lean into your mission every moment of our
- 11:14waking life.
- 11:16Come Lord Jesus come do your work in
- 11:18us as we do our work with you.
- 11:21Amen.
- 11:24Thanks for listening.
