Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / EXCLUSIVE: SPACEX and XAI MERGER!
Transcript
- 0:00So Elon Musk had just created the most valuable private
- 0:04company on Earth, and possibly outside of Earth too.
- 0:08Like in the realm of orbit of Earth, SpaceX and XAI are
- 0:16merging. The combined entity is valued at
- 0:19$1.25 trillion. That's a trillion with AT.
- 0:23To put that into perspective, that's larger than the entire
- 0:26GDP of the Netherlands. One man now controls a company
- 0:31worth more than many countries produce in a year.
- 0:34The move combines Musk's rocket empire of SpaceX with his
- 0:38artificial intelligence company into a single corporate
- 0:42structure. I got a lot of thoughts on why
- 0:44this is happening and what it means for the space industry and
- 0:48why the timing really matters more than you might think.
- 0:50And we're going to get back into that after this very short
- 0:54break. Now, let's start with the
- 0:59number, the valuation, because it's genuinely staggering, $1.25
- 1:03trillion. SpaceX was last valued around
- 1:07350 billion in late 2024, hit roughly 50 billion after its
- 1:12latest funding round. So that's for XAI.
- 1:15So where does that extra 850 billion come from?
- 1:20Synergy. The corporate term is we all
- 1:22love it. And I don't use that word
- 1:24lightly because it's usually corporate nonsense BS.
- 1:28But in this case there's a real argument.
- 1:30SpaceX has Starlink, Starlink has millions of subscribers and
- 1:34a constellation of over 6000 satellites beaming Internet to
- 1:38Earth. XAI needs massive amounts of
- 1:41computing power to train its models, and Musk has been very
- 1:45vocal about the bottleneck being energy and infrastructure for AI
- 1:50compute. Now here's where it gets really
- 1:52interesting though. It's an infrastructure company,
- 1:56and then infrastructure. The ground systems, the power
- 1:58systems, the global reach. That's exactly what an AI
- 2:02company needs to scale. So the timing here isn't random,
- 2:07though we're in the middle of an AI arms race.
- 2:10Open AI, Google, Anthropic, Meta for all, pouring billions of
- 2:14dollars into compute infrastructure.
- 2:18The constraint isn't really the algorithms anymore.
- 2:20It's the physical stuff. It's the data centers, the
- 2:23power, the chips. And Musk has been building
- 2:26massive AI supercomputer in Memphis.
- 2:29He's buying up all the NVIDIA GP OS by the 10s of thousands.
- 2:34But he's been doing this through XAI as a separate company,
- 2:37separate funding and separate investors.
- 2:39But by merging these companies they consolidate the capital and
- 2:44one set of investors. Just one thing and critically 1
- 2:47strategic direction. SpaceX is cash flow from
- 2:50Starlink and government contracts can now directly fund.
- 2:54XA is infrastructure build out. XAI needed the money.
- 2:58No more finding funding, no more shuffling money between
- 3:02entities, no more competing for resources internally now.
- 3:08So what does XAI do for SpaceX? That's what I keep coming back
- 3:13to. What are they going to do?
- 3:14How are they going to work together?
- 3:17Autonomous systems is all I could figure out.
- 3:20SpaceX already uses AI for landing rockets.
- 3:22The Falcon 9 boosters that land themselves on drone ships?
- 3:25That's a machine learning problem.
- 3:28The Starship flight computer, same thing.
- 3:30Now imagine the same team with access to XAIS foundational
- 3:33models. You could have AI systems that
- 3:38don't just follow pre programmed trajectories but actually reason
- 3:42about unexpected situations. If you have an engine out during
- 3:47ascent or the weather conditions change, AI figures out the
- 3:51optimal response in real time. Super easy right?
- 3:55Musk just put his rockets and his engineers in the same place
- 4:01as his AI researchers. Everything just changed.
- 4:05Now what if we thinking about Starlink plus Grok here?
- 4:10Everybody has their opinion on Grok, right?
- 4:12There's another angle that I think people are sleeping on.
- 4:15Grok already integrates with X, the social media platform that
- 4:18Elon owns. But what if it integrates with
- 4:21Starlink? Think about it.
- 4:24Starlink has direct to device capability.
- 4:26Now your phone can connect to satellites without any special
- 4:30hardware. And what if every Starlink
- 4:33terminal, every connected device has a Grok built in?
- 4:37Because of this, it's an AI assistant delivered from space.
- 4:43Is that crazy or what? Musk has talked about building
- 4:46and everything app? Of course.
- 4:47That's what he wanted X to be, right?
- 4:50A super app that combines social media, payments, AI ride hailing
- 4:56connectivity. The merger gets him one step
- 4:58closer. That's all there is to it.
- 5:00The infrastructure layer is now unified.
- 5:03And eventually maybe they'll get Tesla on board and bring all of
- 5:07his companies, merge all of his companies together.
- 5:11Speaking about coming together, come join us.
- 5:14I've been digging through the analytics of the show.
- 5:16I've noticed that 37% of you are following this channel.
- 5:20And for you, I'm forever grateful.
- 5:22The other 63% of you, you've watched the show before.
- 5:26I've seen the stats, you've watched it, you've listened to
- 5:29it, you've been here before, or maybe you're new.
- 5:31If you're new here and you haven't hit the follower
- 5:33subscribe button, here's why you should.
- 5:37I've been doing this for about 10 years.
- 5:39I've been an independent journalist covering Elon tech,
- 5:41Space Flight, everything AI for the last 10 years, and I'll
- 5:45continue for the next 10. It's easy.
- 5:47All you need is one second. Just hit the follower subscribe
- 5:50button on whatever platform you're on right now, and I'll
- 5:54continue to do this for you. So thank you for that.
- 5:57I'm extremely grateful for you, and I'm blessed to have you in
- 6:00this community. So thank you.
- 6:02Now let's talk about what this means for everybody else.
- 6:07Amazon, Amazon, Amazon has been trying to get Project Kuiper off
- 6:12the ground for years. They've launched some test
- 6:14satellites, but they're way behind Star Lake in development.
- 6:18Jeff Bezos also has Blue Origin, which is finally getting
- 6:21competitive with New Glen. But Blue Origin and Amazon are
- 6:25separate companies, different investors.
- 6:27They have different managers, different staff, different
- 6:30timelines. Now must just show the vertical.
- 6:34Vertical integration is superior.
- 6:36You want to win in space? You want to win the race?
- 6:39Neither. Rockets, satellites, ground
- 6:40systems, the software, and apparently now the AI.
- 6:45And Amazon might need to think hard about whether keeping these
- 6:48companies separate makes sense anymore.
- 6:51Google has invested in SpaceX for years.
- 6:53They're an investor in Starlink, but they're also building their
- 6:56own AI models that compete directly with XAI.
- 7:00Puts them in an awkward position.
- 7:01Now. Do you keep funding the
- 7:04competitors infrastructure and the hardware and the software?
- 7:09That's up to them. I I see a reason for it, but
- 7:13they probably, they, they know better than us, right?
- 7:17Let's talk about the money. That's what this all comes down
- 7:21to, right? What does this mean for
- 7:22investors? SpaceX has a massive list of
- 7:25backer backers. Founders Fund, Sequoia, Google,
- 7:28Fidelity, T Rowe Price. They're just, those are the
- 7:32biggest names in venture capital and assets management.
- 7:34They're all part of SpaceX in some way.
- 7:37X AI has its own investor base. Some overlap, but not
- 7:40completely. A merger means these investor
- 7:43groups are now together. The cap table just got very
- 7:47interesting. But here's the thing, at $1.25
- 7:50trillion, who can even invest at this level?
- 7:55This isn't just venture capital. You need sovereign wealth funds
- 8:00now. National pension funds, the
- 8:04biggest pools of money on our planet, have to go into this
- 8:08thing, which is wild. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment
- 8:12Fund has been looking for ways into the AI space.
- 8:15Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Norway, they're all players who write
- 8:20the checks that are this big must just create an asset that
- 8:23appeals to the very top of that capital pyramid.
- 8:26The very top at the top, at the top, all the people, they have
- 8:29all the money. All the governments have the
- 8:31money. Sovereign wealth funds.
- 8:33There you go. So it's going to be interesting
- 8:37how this works out, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't
- 8:44thinking about antitrust here right now.
- 8:47The FTC has been aggressive about tech mergers.
- 8:50They've blocked a bunch of deals over the past few years.
- 8:54But it's tricky. SpaceX and XAI aren't direct
- 8:58competitors with anyone in a way that makes traditional antitrust
- 9:02case sense. SpaceX competes with ula and
- 9:06Blue Origin and Rocket Lab in launch.
- 9:09Starlink Complete competes with traditional telecom.
- 9:15XAI competes with open AI and Google and AI.
- 9:18So there's no obvious market where this merger reduces
- 9:22competition. If anything, it creates a more
- 9:24formidable competitor in just multiple markets, not just one
- 9:28place. The sheer size might attract
- 9:31attention from regulators. When one person controls a $1.25
- 9:35trillion entity with national security implications, rockets
- 9:39that launched spy satellites, and AI systems that could be
- 9:42used for who knows what. Regulators tend to pay attention
- 9:47to that kind of stuff. I don't think it's blocked
- 9:49though, but it wouldn't be surprised if there are
- 9:52conditions attached. Maybe data handling requirements
- 9:54for Starlink, maybe restrictions on what AI models can be
- 9:58deployed on government missions, something that gives regulators
- 10:01a way to claim over a site. Now let's talk about what's
- 10:05different. You know, I've studied Elon and
- 10:10his companies for years. We haven't seen anything like
- 10:14this before. He's built single companies,
- 10:20SpaceX, Tesla X, etcetera, and they've all been kind of his
- 10:24thing, right? Tesla went public, SpaceX state
- 10:27Private X was an acquisition, XAI was a new startup.
- 10:30The Boring Company and Neurolink are basically just kind of side
- 10:33hustles for Elon right now. That's the first time that Elon
- 10:36has combined two of his major companies into a single entity.
- 10:40Suggests he's thinking about his empire differently now, less
- 10:45like a portfolio of bets and more like a vertical integrated
- 10:50system. I think he's going to do Tesla
- 10:53in the next year or so if I mean, he has to get everybody on
- 10:56board, right? He has to get everybody at Tesla
- 10:59on board to do this because that would be a huge merger.
- 11:02Merge everything together, SpaceX, Tesla, XAIX, everything,
- 11:07put that all together in the mega Corp, right?
- 11:10The question is whether this is the first move or the last.
- 11:16And since it's XAI and they use Crock, does X get folded in?
- 11:20Does Tesla somehow connect all this with the robots and
- 11:23optimists? Musk has always talked about his
- 11:26company's server serving like a larger mission, human survival.
- 11:33He wants to send people to Mars so humanity can continue on
- 11:39forever. But maybe this is him actually
- 11:41building the structure to pursue that.
- 11:44I mean, maybe he's, maybe he's building the machine that will
- 11:48build a machine that'll get us to Mars eventually.
- 11:51Maybe this is him actually doing one company.
- 11:54Finally, the one vision. You know how we wanted to like
- 11:57the X company, a trillion dollars to make it happen.
- 12:02They need all the money, right? But there's also things that we
- 12:05don't know. There's a lot that we don't know
- 12:08actually. What's the governance structure?
- 12:10Who runs the combined company? What happens to the existing
- 12:13executive teams? We don't know the exact deal
- 12:16mechanics. And is this a merger of equals?
- 12:19Is 1 company acquiring the other or are there new shares being
- 12:23issued? Are these people going to be
- 12:26deluded? You know, the SpaceX people or
- 12:28the XAI investors? Nobody knows and we don't know
- 12:32how employees feel about this. SpaceX has a distinct culture.
- 12:37Move fast. Engineer the hell out of things,
- 12:41launch rockets, get to Mars. Damn it.
- 12:44XAI has been more of kind of like a research lab, building
- 12:48foundational models, competing with open AI, intellectually
- 12:52grok, etcetera. Cultures might clash, or they
- 12:56might energize each other. They might realize that they
- 12:59need AI to get them to Mars, so that might be a thing.
- 13:03So Musk now controls a company that's $1.25 trillion.
- 13:13You can launch rockets to Mars eventually and build AI systems
- 13:17that might eventually think better than humans, Optimus.
- 13:21Whether that is exciting or terrifying, that's up to you.
- 13:27Depends on how you feel about Elon and how he could control
- 13:29everything. Because he could control the
- 13:31skies at this point, right? If he has AI and Starship
- 13:36working together with Starlink and Grok on every phone that has
- 13:40Starlink, he's controlling a lot of stuff at that point.
- 13:45But it's a huge scale. It's undeniable.
- 13:47This isn't a startup. SpaceX isn't just that little
- 13:50company in the dirt lot at the, you know, at the end of Star
- 13:54Base in Texas anymore. It's an institution.
- 13:59It's mature for better, for worse.
- 14:02These kind of institutions shape the future.
- 14:06Now, if you've been here this whole time, I want to say thank
- 14:09you for participating and being part of this.
- 14:12So please take a second hit the subscribe button, leave a
- 14:15comment down below. Let me know what you think about
- 14:18all the stuff. Are you scared or I don't know?
- 14:22Are you energized? Are you excited about this?
- 14:24Because there's some part of me that's thinking like oh AI more
- 14:31AI in SpaceX stuff. It might be pretty cool.
- 14:35I don't know, it's, it's a little bit of both.
- 14:38So let me know what you think of the comments.
- 14:39All right, take Care now.
