- 0:02Scientists and medical practitioners have studied
- 0:04hypnotism and even applied it in various situations.
- 0:10They raised some doubts due to studies that did not completely
- 0:13follow the highest double-blind standards used in medical
- 0:17research. Nevertheless, hypnotism has been
- 0:20found to have some very clear practical uses and benefits and
- 0:25is utilized in a variety of situations including treatment
- 0:28of anxiety, stress, helping to overcome addictions such as
- 0:33smoking, sleep disorders and chronic pain, as well as
- 0:38providing benefits to reduce pain in acute situations.
- 0:43Given the serious potential side effects of pharmaceutical drugs
- 0:47for pain relief, such as the use of highly addictive opioids,
- 0:52more practitioners in fact are turning to the use of hypnosis
- 0:56in an increasing number of situations to reduce or avoid
- 1:01the need for opioids. Hypnosis provides insight into
- 1:05the link between the mind and the body and the ability to gain
- 1:10a measure of control over the body and its functions,
- 1:13including some of the autonomic functions.
- 1:16Through use of non physical techniques, a state related to
- 1:21trance is created in which the active control exercised by the
- 1:25conscious mind is reduced. The individual becomes more
- 1:29suggestible and is able to dissociate himself from anxiety,
- 1:34pain or fear reactions that otherwise would have a great
- 1:38impact on him. We know that certain yogins in
- 1:42the state of Samadi, a spiritual trance state, are not actively
- 1:47attending to the circumstances in the external world.
- 1:51They are able in some cases, to pass days at a time without
- 1:55experiencing hunger or thirst. They can sit on beds of nails or
- 2:00walk across nails or hot coals without any sensation of pain.
- 2:06Legend has it that some ancient yogic practitioners would sit in
- 2:09such a deep state of samadhi that they had anthills grow up
- 2:14on and around them without noticing.
- 2:18They have successfully moved their conscious awareness away
- 2:21from the body, vital being and mind into an entirely different
- 2:26realm of awareness. The experience of yogic
- 2:31practitioners in samadhi shed some light on the experience of
- 2:34individuals undergoing treatment with hypnotism.
- 2:38A similar state of separation from the external body and its
- 2:42senses and the nervous system reactions and the response of
- 2:46the active mentality takes place.
- 2:50We are normally aware of and involved in the events and
- 2:53circumstances in the world around us and our reactions to
- 2:57them. In the hypnotic state, the
- 3:00awareness must be withdrawn from active reaction and response to
- 3:04such things. The interactive functioning of
- 3:07the senses, the nervous system and the mind must be suspended
- 3:12and the patient must be in a state where suggestions can be
- 3:15made that operate on certain parts of the brain without first
- 3:20being filtered through the analyzing and deciding parts of
- 3:24the mental consciousness. Most people have had an
- 3:27experience where they were so deeply absorbed in something
- 3:31that they lost track of the passage of time, did not feel
- 3:35hunger or thirst or any discomfort at all.
- 3:39This is a brief taste of the deeper status of hypnotic
- 3:43immersion or yogic trance, the Mother notes quote.
- 3:49Now they are finding out that they can replace anesthetics by
- 3:53hypnotism with infinitely better results.
- 3:56Well, hypnotism is a form, a form modernized in its
- 4:01expression of occultism, a very limited, very small form of a
- 4:07very tiny power compared with occult power.
- 4:11But still it is a form of occultism which has been put in
- 4:16modern terms to make the thing modern.
- 4:19And I don't know if you have heard about these things, but
- 4:21they are very interesting from a certain point of view.
- 4:24For instance, this process of hypnotism has been tried on
- 4:29someone who had to have a skin graft on a wound.
- 4:32I don't remember all the details now, but the arm had to remain
- 4:36attached to the leg for a fortnight.
- 4:39If the person were immobilized by plaster and bandages and all
- 4:43sorts of things, at the end of the fortnight he wouldn't be
- 4:47able to move, everything would become stiff and he would need
- 4:51weeks of treatment to recover the free use of his arm.
- 4:54In this case, nothing was tied up, nothing was physically
- 4:59immobilized, No plaster, no bandages, nothing.
- 5:05The person was just hypnotized and told to keep his arm in that
- 5:08position. He kept it for a fortnight
- 5:12without any effort, any difficulty, without any
- 5:15intervention from his will. It was the will of the
- 5:19hypnotizer which intervened. It was perfectly successful.
- 5:24The arm remained in the required position.
- 5:27And when the fortnight was over and the hypnotism removed and
- 5:31the person was told, now you may move, he began to move.
- 5:36Well, that's a step forward. They are soon going to meet.
- 5:41It will be nothing more than a question of words.
- 5:44Then if they are not too rigid, they can agree on the value
- 5:49given to the words. End Quote Reference Shriuru
