Chapter thirty seven. At this chapter begins the story of Joseph, who,
0:06
in every subsequent chapter but one to the end of this book makes the greatest
0:10
figure. He was Jacob's eldest son by his beloved wife Rachel, born,
0:14
as many eminent men were, of a mother that had been long barren.
0:19
His story is so remarkably divided between his humiliation and his exaltation that we cannot
0:24
avoid seeing something of Christ in it, who was first humbled and then exalted,
0:29
and in many instances so as to answer the type of Joseph. It
0:34
also shows the lot of Christians who must, through many tribulations, enter into
0:38
the kingdom. In this chapter we have Roman. One the malice his brethren
0:43
bore against him. They hated him one because he informed his father of their
0:48
wickedness Verses one to two. Two because his father loved him verses three to
0:53
four. Three because he dreamed of his dominion over them Verses five to eleven,
0:59
roan tie two. The mischiefs his brothers designed and did to him.
1:03
One the kind visit he made them gave them an opportunity Verses twelve to seventeen.
1:08
Two They designed to slay him, but determined to starve him Verses eighteen
1:11
to twenty four. Three, they changed their purpose and sold him for a
1:15
slave Verses twenty five to twenty eight four. They made their father believe that
1:21
he was torn to pieces Verses twenty nine to thirty five. Five. He
1:26
was sold into Egypt to Potiphar verse thirty six. And all this was working
1:30
together for good. The History of Joseph b. C. Seventeen twenty nine,
1:38
Genesis, chapter thirty seven, Verses one two four. And Jacob dwelt
1:44
in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
1:47
These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old,
1:52
was feeding the flock with his brethren, and the lad was with the sons
1:55
of bill Hall, and with the sons of Zilpha, his father's wives.
1:59
And Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. Now, Israel loved Joseph
2:04
more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age,
2:07
and he made him a coat of many colors. And when his brethren
2:09
saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him
2:14
and could not speak peaceably unto him. Moses has no more to say of
2:21
the Edomites unless they happen to fall in Israel's way. But now he applies
2:24
himself closely to the story of Jacob's family. These are the generations of Jacob.
2:30
His is not a bare, barren genealogy as that of Esau Chapter thirty
2:35
six, verse one, but a memorable, useful history. Here is one
2:39
Jacob o sojourner, with his father Isaac, who was yet living verse one.
2:44
We shall never be at home till we come to heaven. Two Joseph,
2:49
a shepherd feeding the flock with his brethren verse two. Though he was
2:53
his father's darling, Yet he was not brought up in idleness or delicacy.
2:57
Those do not truly love their children, that do not injure them to business
3:00
and labor and mortification. The fondling of children is, with good reason commonly
3:06
called the spoiling of them. Those that are trained up to do nothing are
3:09
likely to be good for nothing. Three. Joseph beloved by his father verse
3:15
three, partly for his dear mother's sake that was dead, and partly for
3:19
his own sake, because he was the greatest comfort of his old age.
3:23
Probably he waited on him and was more observant of him than the rest of
3:25
his sons. He was the son of the ancient some. That is,
3:30
when he was a child, he was as grave and discreet as if he
3:34
had been an old man. A child but not childish. Jacob proclaimed his
3:38
affection to him by dressing him finer than the rest of his children. He
3:42
made him a coat of divers colors, which probably was significant of further honors
3:46
intended him. Note, though those children are happy that have that in them
3:53
which justly recommends them to their parents particular love. Yet it is the prudence
3:57
of parents not to make a difference between one child and another, unless there
4:00
be a great and manifest cause given for it by the child's dutifulness or undutifulness.
4:05
Parental government must be impartial and manage with a steady hand. For Joseph
4:12
hated by his brethren, One because his father loved him. When parents make
4:16
a difference, children soon take notice of it, and it often occasions feuds
4:20
and quarrels and families. Two because he brought to his father their evil report.
4:26
Jacob's sons did that when they were from under his eye, which they
4:30
durst not have done if they had been at home with him. But Joseph
4:33
gave his father an account of their bad carriage, that he might reprove and
4:36
restrain them, not as a malicious tale bearer to so discord, but as
4:41
a faithful brother, who, when he durst not admonish them himself, represented
4:46
their faults to one that had authority to admonish them. Note one, It
4:51
is common for friendly monitors to be looked upon his enemies. Those that hate
4:56
to be reformed hate those that would reform them. Verbs Chapter nine, verse
5:00
eight two. It is common for those that are beloved of God to be
5:04
hated by the world, whom Heaven blesses, hell curses to those whom God
5:10
speaks comfortably. Wicked men will not speak peaceably. It is said here of
5:15
Joseph the lad was with the sons of bill Hall. Some read it,
5:18
and he was servant to them. They made him their drudge Verses five to
5:26
eleven. And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren,
5:30
and they hated him yet more. And he said, unto them, here
5:33
I pray you this dream which I have dreamed for Behold, we were binding
5:38
sheaves in the field, and lo, my sheaf arose and also stood upright,
5:43
and behold, your sheafs stood round about and made obedience to my sheaf.
5:47
And his brethren said unto him, shalt thou indeed reign over us?
5:50
Or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the
5:55
more for his dreams and for his words. And he dreamed yet another dream,
5:59
and hold it his brethren, and said, behold, I have dreamed
6:02
a dream more. And behold the sun and the moon and the eleven stars
6:05
made obeisance to me. And he told it his father and to his brethren.
6:11
And his father rebuked him and said, unto him, what is this
6:14
dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed
6:17
come and thou ourselves to thee to the earth. And his brethren envied them,
6:23
but his father observed the saying. Here one Joseph relates the prophetical dreams
6:30
he had Verses six, seven, nine, and ten. Though he was
6:33
now very young, about seventeen years old, yet he was pious and devout
6:38
and well inclined, and this fitted him for God's gracious discoveries of himself.
6:42
To him, Joseph had a great deal of trouble before him, and therefore
6:46
God gave him betimes this prospect of his advancement, to support and comfort him
6:50
under the long and grievous troubles with which he was to be exercised. Thus
6:56
Christ had a joy set before him, and so have Christians. Note God
7:00
has ways of preparing his people beforehand for the trials which they cannot foresee,
7:05
but which he has an eye to in the comforts with which he furnishes them.
7:11
His dreams were one that his brethren sheaves all bowed to his, intimating
7:15
upon what occasion they should be brought to do homage to him, namely,
7:19
in seeking to him for corn, their empty sheaves should bow to his full
7:25
one. Two that the sun and moon and eleven stars did obeisance to him
7:30
Verse nine. Joseph was more of a prophet than a politician, else he
7:34
would have kept this to himself when he could not but know that his brethren
7:38
did already hate him, and that this would but the more exasperate them.
7:43
But if he told in his simplicity, yet God directed it for the mortification
7:46
of his brethren. Observe. Joseph dreamed of his preferment, but he did
7:51
not dream of his imprisonment. Thus, many young people, when they are
7:56
setting out in the world, think of nothing but prosperity and pleasure, and
8:00
never dream of trouble. Two, His brethren take it very ill, and
8:05
are more and more enraged against him Verse eight. Shalt thou indeed reign over
8:11
us? See here one, how truly they interpreted his dream that he should
8:16
reign over them. Those become the expositors of his dream, who were enemies
8:20
to the accomplishment of it. As in Gideon's story Judges chapter seven, Verses
8:24
thirteen fourteen. They perceived that he spoke of them. Matthew Chapter twenty one,
8:30
verse forty five. The event exactly answered to this interpretation Chapter forty two,
8:35
verse six, et cetera. Two. How scornfully they resented it.
8:41
Shalt thou, who are but one, reign over us? Who are many?
8:45
Thou who art the youngest over us who are older. Note the reign
8:48
and dominion of Jesus Christ, our Joseph have been and are despised and striven
8:54
against by a carnal and unbelieving world who cannot endure to think that this man
8:58
should reign over them. The dominion also of the upright in the morning of
9:03
the resurrection is thought of with the utmost disdain. Three His father gives him
9:11
a gentle rebuke for it, yet observes the saying Verses ten and eleven.
9:15
Probably he checked him for it to lessen the offense which his brethren would be
9:18
apt to take at it. Yet he took notice of it more than he
9:22
seemed to do. He insinuated that it was but an idle dream because his
9:26
mother was brought in, who had been dead sometimes since, whereas the sun,
9:31
moon and eleven stars signify no more than the whole family that should have
9:35
dependence upon him and be glad to be beholden to him. Note the faith
9:41
of God's people in God's promises is often sorely shaken by their misunderstanding of the
9:46
promises and then suggesting the improbabilities that attend the performance. But God is doing
9:52
his own work and will do it whether we understand him aright or no.
9:56
Jacob, like Mary Luke, Chapter two, verse five, kept these things
10:01
in his heart, and no doubt remembered them long afterwards. When the event
10:05
answered to the prediction Verses twelve to twenty two, and his brethren went to
10:13
feed their father's flock at Shechem, and Israel said, unto Joseph, do
10:16
not thy brethren feed the flock at Shechem. Come, and I will send
10:20
thee unto them. And he said to him, here am I, And
10:24
he said to him, go, I pray thee, seek whether it be
10:28
well with thy brethren and well with the flocks, and bring me word again.
10:31
So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came
10:35
to Shechem, and a certain man found him, and behold, he was
10:39
wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, what seekest
10:43
thou, And he said, I seek my brethren. Tell me I pray
10:46
THEE where they feed their flocks. And the man said, they are departed.
10:50
Hence, for I heard them say, let us go to Dothan.
10:54
And Joseph went after his brethren and found them at Dothan. And when they
10:58
saw him afar off even before he came near unto them, they conspired against
11:01
him to slay him. And they said, one to another, behold,
11:05
the dreamer cometh. Come now therefore, and let us slay him and cast
11:09
him into some pit. And we will say some evil beast hath devoured him.
11:15
And we shall see what will become of his dreams. And Reuben heard
11:18
of it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said,
11:22
let us not kill him. And Reuben said, unto them, shed no
11:24
blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and
11:28
lay no hand upon him, that he might rid him out of their hands,
11:31
to deliver him again to his father. Here is one the kind visit
11:37
which Joseph, in obedience to his father's command, made to his brethren,
11:41
who were feeding the flock at Shechem, many miles off. Some suggest that
11:46
they went thither on purpose, expecting that Joseph would be sent to see them,
11:50
and that then they should have an opportunity to do him mischief. However,
11:54
Joseph and his father had, both of them more of the innocence of
11:58
the dove than of the wisdom of the serpent. Else he had never come
12:01
thus into the hands of those that hated him. But God designed it all
12:05
for good. See in Joseph an instance one of dutifulness to his father.
12:11
Though he was his father's darling, yet he was made and was willing to
12:16
be his father's servant. How readily does he wait his father's orders. Here
12:22
I am verse thirteen. Note those children that are best beloved by their parents
12:28
should be most obedient to their parents, and then their love is well bestowed
12:31
and well returned. Two of kindness to his brethren. Though he knew they
12:37
hated him and envied him, yet he made no objections against his father's commands,
12:43
either from the distance of the place or danger of the journey, but
12:46
cheerfully embraced the opportunity of showing his respect to his brethren. Note it is
12:50
a very good lesson, though it is learnt with difficulty and rarely practiced,
12:54
to love those that hate us. If our relations do not their duty to
12:58
us, yet we must not be wanting in our duty to them. This
13:03
is thankworthy. Joseph who was sent by his father to Shechem to see whether
13:07
his brethren were well there, and whether the country had not risen upon them
13:11
and destroyed them in revenge of their barbarous murder of the Shechemites some years before.
13:16
But Joseph, not finding them there, went to Dothan, which showed
13:20
that he undertook this journey not only in obedience to his father, for then
13:24
he might have returned when he missed them at Shechem. Having done what his
13:28
father told him, but out of love to his brethren, and therefore he
13:31
sought diligently till he found them. Thus, let brotherly love continue, and
13:37
let us give proofs of it. Two, the bloody and malicious plot of
13:43
his brethren against him, who rendered good for evil and for his love were
13:48
his adversaries. Observe one, how deliberately they were in the contrivance of this
13:54
mischief. When they saw him afar off, they conspired against him verse eighteen.
14:00
It was not in a heat or upon a sudden provocation that they thought
14:03
to slay him, but from malice, prepense, and in cold blood.
14:09
Note whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer, for he will be one if
14:13
he have an opportunity. First John, Chapter three, Verse fifteen. Malice
14:18
is the most mischievous thing, and is in danger of making bloody work where
14:22
it is harbored and indulged. The more there is of a project and contrivance
14:26
in a sin, the worse it is. It is bad to do evil,
14:31
but worse to devise it. Two, how cruel they were in their
14:35
design. Nothing less than blood would satisfy them. Come and let us slay
14:39
him Verse twenty Note the old enmity hunts for the precious life. It is
14:46
the blood thirsty that hate the upright Proverbs Chapter twenty nine, verse ten.
14:52
And it is the blood of the saints that the harlot is drunk with.
14:56
Three. How scornfully they reproached him for his dreams verse nineteen. This dreamer
15:01
cometh, and verse twenty, we shall see what will become of his dreams.
15:05
This shows what it was that fretted and enraged them. They could not
15:09
endure to think of doing homage to him. This was what they were plotting
15:15
to prevent by the murder of him. Note men that fret and rage at
15:18
God's counsels are impiously aiming to defeat them, But they imagine a vain thing.
15:24
Psalm two, Verses one to three. God's counsels will stand four.
15:31
How they agreed to keep one another's counsel and to cover the murder with a
15:35
lie. We will say, some evil beast hath devoured him. Whereas in
15:39
thus consulting to devour him, they prove themselves worse than the most evil beasts,
15:45
For evil beasts pray not on those of their own kind. But they
15:48
were tearing a piece of themselves three Reuben's project to deliver him Verses twenty one
15:56
to twenty two. Note God can raise up friends for his people, even
16:00
among their enemies, for he has all hearts in his hands. Reuben,
16:04
of all the brothers, had most reason to be jealous of Joseph, for
16:07
he was the first born, and so entitled to those distinguishing favors which Jacob
16:11
was conferring on Joseph. Yet he proves his best friend. Reuben's temper seems
16:17
to have been soft and effeminate, which had betrayed him to the sin of
16:21
uncleanness, while the temper of the next two brothers, Simeon and Levi,
16:25
was fierce, which betrayed them to the sin of murder, a sin which
16:29
Reuben startled at the thought of. Note our natural constitution should be guarded against
16:36
those sins to which it is most inclinable, and improved, as reubens here
16:41
against those sins to which it is most averse. Reuben made a proposal which
16:47
they thought would effectually answer their intention of destroying Joseph, and yet which he
16:51
designed should answer his intention of rescuing Joseph out of their hands and restoring him
16:56
to his father, probably hoping thereby to recover his father favor, which he
17:00
had lately lost. But God overruled all to serve his own purpose of making
17:04
Joseph an instrument to save much people alive. Joseph was here a type of
17:11
Christ, though he was the beloved son of his father and hated by a
17:15
wicked world. Yet the Father sent him out of his bosom to visit us
17:18
in great humility and love. He came from heaven to earth to seek and
17:22
save us. Yet then malicious plots were laid against him. He came to
17:26
his own, and his own not only received him not but consulted against him.
17:32
This is the Heir, Come. Let us kill him, crucify him,
17:34
crucify him. This he submitted to in pursuance of his design to redeem
17:41
and save us Verses twenty three, two thirty. And it came to pass
17:49
when Joseph was coming unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph out of his
17:53
coat, his coat of many colors that was on him, and they took
17:56
him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty, there
18:00
was no water in it. And they sat down to eat bread, and
18:03
they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold a company of Ishmaelites come
18:07
from Gilead with their camels, bearing spicery and balm, and myrrhr, going
18:11
to carry it down to Egypt. And Judah said, unto his brethren,
18:15
what profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? Come
18:19
and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be
18:23
upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren
18:27
were content. Then there passed by midy Nite merchantmen, and they drew and
18:33
lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for
18:37
twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt. And Reuben returned
18:41
unto the pit, and behold, Joseph was not in the pit, and
18:45
he rent his clothes. And he returned unto his brethren and said, the
18:48
child is not and I whither shall I go? We have here the execution
18:55
of their plot against Joseph. One they stripped him, each striving to see
19:00
the envied coat of many colors Verse twenty three. Thus in imagination they degraded
19:04
him from the birthright of which Perhaps this was the badge grieving him, affronting
19:10
their father and making themselves sport while they insulted over him. Now, Joseph,
19:15
where is thy fine coat? Thus our Lord Jesus was stripped of his
19:19
seamless coat, and thus his suffering saints have first been industriously divested of their
19:25
privileges and honors, and then made the off scouring of all things. Two,
19:30
they went about to starve him, throwing him into a dry pit to
19:33
perish there with hunger and cold. So cruel were their tender mercies verse twenty
19:37
four. Note where envy reigns, pity is banished, and humanity itself is
19:44
forgotten. Proverbs Chapter twenty seven, verse four. So full of deadly poison
19:48
is malice, that the more barbarous anything is, the more grateful it is.
19:53
Now Joseph begged for his life in the anguish of his soul. Chapter
19:57
forty two, verse twenty one, Treated by all imaginable endearments that they would
20:02
be content with his coat and spare his life. He pleads innocence, relation,
20:07
affection, submission. He weeps and makes supplication, but all in vain.
20:11
Reuben alone relents and intercedes for him. Chapter forty two, verse twenty
20:15
two. But he cannot prevail to save Joseph from the horrible pit in which
20:19
they resolve. He shall die by degrees and be buried alive. Is this
20:23
he to whom his brethrens must do homage. Note God's providences often seem to
20:30
contradict his purposes, even when they are serving them and working at a distance
20:33
toward the accomplishment of them. Three They slighted him when he was in distress,
20:40
and were not greed for the affliction of Joseph. For when he was
20:42
pining away in the pit, bemoaning his own misery, and with a languishing
20:47
cry, calling to them for pity, they sat down to eat bread verse
20:51
twenty five one. They felt no remorse of conscience for the sin. If
20:56
they had, it would have spoiled their appetite for their meat and the relish
21:00
of it. Note. A great force put upon conscience commonly stupefies it and
21:06
for the time deprives it both of sense and speech. Daring sinners are secure
21:11
ones. But the consciences of Joseph's brethren, though asleep now, were roused
21:15
long afterwards. Chapter forty three, verse twenty one two. They were pleased
21:21
to think how they were freed from the fear of their brother's dominion over them,
21:23
and that, on the contrary, they had turned the wheel upon him.
21:27
They made merry over him, as the persecutors over the two witnesses that
21:32
had tormented them. Revelations, Chapter eleven, verse ten. Note those that
21:37
oppose God's counsels may possibly prevail so far as to think they have gained their
21:41
point, and yet be deceived. Four They sold him a caravan of merchants,
21:48
very opportunely passed by providence. So ordering it and Judah made the motion
21:53
that they should sell Joseph to them, to be carried far enough off into
21:57
Egypt, where in all probability he would be lost and never heard of more.
22:03
One Judah proposed it in compassion to Joseph verse twenty six. What profit
22:07
is it if we slay our brother? It will be less guilt and more
22:11
gained to sell him. Note when we are tempted to sin, we should
22:15
consider the unprofitableness of it. It is what there is nothing to be got
22:18
by. Two. They acquiesced in it because they thought that if he were
22:23
sold for a slave, he would never be a lord. If sold into
22:26
Egypt, he would never be their lord. Yet all this was working towards
22:32
it. Note the wrath of man shall praise God, and the remainder of
22:37
wrath he will restrain. Psalm seventy six, Verse ten. Joseph's brethren were
22:42
wonderfully restrained from murdering him, and their selling him was as wonderfully turned to
22:48
God's praise. As Joseph was sold by contrivance of Judah for twenty pieces of
22:52
silver, so was our Lord for thirty, and by one of the same
22:56
name too, Judas. Reuben, it seems, had gone away from his
23:00
brethren when they sold Joseph, intending to come round some other way to the
23:04
pit and to help Joseph out of it and return him safely to his father.
23:10
This was a kind project. But if it had taken effect, what
23:12
had become of God's purpose concerning his preferment in Egypt. Note there are many
23:18
devices in man's heart, many devices of the enemies of God's people to destroy
23:23
them, and of their friends to help them, which perhaps are both disappointed
23:27
as these were. But the counsel of the Lord that shall stand. Reuben
23:33
thought himself undone, because the child was sold. I whither shall I go
23:37
Verse thirty. He being the eldest his father, would expect from him an
23:41
account of Joseph. But as it proved, they would all have been undone
23:45
if he had not been sold Verses thirty one to thirty six. And they
23:53
took Joseph's coat and killed a kid of the goats, and dip the coat
23:57
in the blood. And they sent the coat of many colors, and they
24:02
brought it to their father and said this we have found. Know now whether
24:06
it be thy son's coat or no. And he knew it, and said,
24:10
it is my son's coat. An evil beast hath devoured him. Joseph
24:14
is without doubt rent in pieces. And Jacob rent his clothes and put sackcloth
24:18
upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days, and all his
24:22
sons and his daughters rose up to comfort him. But he refused to be
24:26
comforted, and said, for I will go down into the grave unto my
24:30
son mourning. Thus his father wept for him, and the Midianites sold him
24:34
into Egypt. Unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's and captain of the guard.
24:41
One Joseph would soon be missed great inquiry would be made for him.
24:47
And therefore his brethren have a further design to make the world believe that Joseph
24:52
was torn into pieces by a wild beast. And this they did one to
24:56
clear themselves that they might not be suspected to have done him any Mista note,
25:00
we have all learned of Adam to cover our transgression job chapter thirty one,
25:04
Verse thirty three. When the devil has taught men to commit one sin,
25:08
he then teaches them to conceal it with another, theft and murder,
25:11
with lying in perjury. But he that covers his sin shall not prosper long.
25:17
Joseph's brethren kept their own in one another's counsel for some time, but
25:21
their villainy came to light at last, and it is here published the world
25:26
and the remembrance of it, transmitted to every age two to grieve their good
25:30
father. It seemed designed by them on purpose to be revenge upon him for
25:34
his distinguishing love of Joseph. It was contrived on purpose to create the utmost
25:40
vexation to him. They sent him Joseph's coat of many colors, with one
25:44
color more than it had had, a bloody color. Verse thirty two,
25:48
they pretended that they had found it out in the fields, and Jacob himself
25:52
must be scornfully asked, is this thy son's coat? Now? The badge
25:56
of his honor is the discovery of his fate. And it is rashly inferred
26:00
from the bloody coat that Joseph, without doubt is reent in pieces. Love
26:04
is always apt to fear the worst concerning the person beloved. There is a
26:10
love that casteth out fear, but that is perfect love. Now, let
26:15
those that know the heart of a parent suppose the agonies of poor Jacob and
26:18
put their souls into his soul's stead. How strongly does he represent to himself
26:23
the direful idea of Joseph's misery. Sleeping or waking, he imagines he sees
26:30
the wild beast setting upon Joseph, thinks he hears his piteous shrieks when the
26:33
lion roared against him, and makes himself tremble and grow chill many a time
26:38
when he fancies how the beast sucked his blood, tore him limb from limb,
26:42
and left no remains of him but the coat of many colors to carry
26:45
the tidings, And no doubt it added no little to the grief that he
26:49
had exposed him by sending him, and sending him all alone on this dangerous
26:53
journey, which proves so fatal to him. This cuts him to the heart,
26:59
and he is ready to look upon himself as an accessory to the death
27:02
of his son. Now one endeavors were used to comfort him. His sons
27:07
basely pretended to do it verse thirty five. But miserable hypocritical comforters were they
27:12
all. Had they really desired to comfort him, they might easily have done
27:17
it by telling him the truth. Joseph is alive. He is indeed sold
27:21
into Egypt. But it will be an easy thing to send thither and ransom
27:23
him. This would have loosened his sackcloth and girded him with gladness. Presently,
27:30
I wonder their countenance did not betray their guilt. And with what face
27:33
they could pretend to condole with Jacob on the death of Joseph when they knew
27:37
he was alive. Note the heart is strangely hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
27:44
But two it was all in vain. Jacob refused to be comforted Verse
27:48
thirty five. He was an obstinate mourner resolved to go down into the grave
27:52
mourning. It was not a sudden transport of passion like that of David.
27:57
Would God I had died for thee my son, my son, But like
28:02
Job he hardened himself in sorrow. Note One, great affliction to any creature
28:07
does not prepare for so much the greater affliction, when it is either removed
28:11
from us or embittered to us. Inordinate love commonly ends in immoderate grief.
28:18
As much as the sway of the pendulum throws one way, so much it
28:22
will throw the other way. Two. Those consult neither the comfort of their
28:26
souls nor the credit of their religion, that are determined in their sorrow.
28:30
Upon any occasion whatever, we must never say we will go to our grave
28:33
mourning, because we know not what joyful days Providence may yet reserve for us,
28:37
and it is our wisdom and duty to accommodate ourselves to Providence. Three.
28:42
We often perplex ourselves with imaginary troubles. We fancy things worse than they
28:48
are, and then afflict ourselves more than we need. Sometimes there needs no
28:52
more to comfort us than to undeceive us. It is good to hope the
28:56
best Two the Ishmaelites and Midianites, having bought Joseph only to make their market
29:06
of him. Here we have him sold again, with gain enough to the
29:10
merchants, no doubt to Potiphar Verse thirty six. Joseph was lamenting the loss
29:15
of his life. Had he known all, he would have lamented, though
29:18
not so passionately, the loss of liberty. Shall Jacob's free born son exchange
29:22
the best robe of his family for the livery of an Egyptian lord and all
29:26
the marks of servitude? How soon was the land of Egypt made a house
29:30
of bondage to the seed of Jacob. Note it is the wisdom of parents
29:34
not to bring up their children too delicately, because they know not to what
29:38
hardships and mortifications Providence may reduce them before they die. Jacob little thought that
29:45
his ever beloved Joseph would be thus bought and sold for a servant. End
29:49
of Chapter thirty seven.
