- 1:01Speaker 1: a good time over there. Give it a listen, All right,
- 1:04Speaker 1: let's hop into a synopsis of Friends and Family Christmas.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Sure.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Overwhelmed by Christmas events and a surprise visit from her parents,
- 1:12Speaker 3: photographer Danny asks Laura Amelia for her help. Pretending to
- 1:17Speaker 3: date is the perfect solution until real feelings develop.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Boom, It's time for news and Notes. This movie was
- 1:26Speaker 1: directed by Ann Wheeler and has seventy one directing credits.
- 1:31Speaker 1: She also directed this year's countdown to Christmas movie Heaven
- 1:35Speaker 1: Down Here. She's directed on a number of TV series
- 1:38Speaker 1: as well. A couple of them include recently Firefly Lane
- 1:43Speaker 1: and Netflix's Anne with an E.
- 1:46Speaker 3: This movie was written by Gary Goldstein and Tracy Andrene.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Gary has twenty two writing credits. Prior to Friends and
- 1:53Speaker 3: Family Christmas, he wrote last year's Lights Camera Christmas, which
- 1:57Speaker 3: was one of my faves. Tracy has thirty two writing credits.
- 2:01Speaker 3: One of her earliest works was The Spirit of Christmas,
- 2:05Speaker 3: A review that is coming to Girls Gone Hallmark this
- 2:07Speaker 3: summer in twenty twenty four. Look for it. I think
- 2:12Speaker 3: Megan's real excited to revisit that one. Tracy has also
- 2:16Speaker 3: written two Ya novels. The first one is called So
- 2:20Speaker 3: This Is Christmas and the second is called So This
- 2:23Speaker 3: Is Love.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Humberly Gonzales plays Daniella. This is Humberly's second Hallmark movie,
- 2:28Speaker 1: as she had a supporting role in twenty twenty two's
- 2:30Speaker 1: A Tale of Love. That's a Dog movie. Most recently.
- 2:34Speaker 1: In her forty five acting credit, she played Sophie Sanchez
- 2:37Speaker 1: on Ginny and Georgia, and she also voiced a character
- 2:40Speaker 1: in the Avatar video game.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Alie Liebert plays Amelia and can someone please let Allie
- 2:47Speaker 3: take a nap? She's been very busy this year. She
- 2:50Speaker 3: directed a time for her to come home for Christmas,
- 2:53Speaker 3: as well as Christmas in Nodding Hill. She's also an
- 2:57Speaker 3: accomplished actress with ninety eight acting credits, including recently appearing
- 3:03Speaker 3: in ten episodes of the Peacock series. One of Us
- 3:06Speaker 3: is Lying, based on the popular book.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Gabriella Renoso plays Raquel McCallen. She has a handful of
- 3:14Speaker 1: credits dating back thirty years, although she started working regularly
- 3:19Speaker 1: just a few years ago. She has twenty three total
- 3:21Speaker 1: acting credits and has previously appeared in Hallmark's Undercover Holiday
- 3:26Speaker 1: and The Christmas House.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I love that when you have like an actor of
- 3:30Speaker 3: a certain age, it's like, yeah, I'm working a lot
- 3:33Speaker 3: more now.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty awesome. Christopher Shire.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Christopher's ninety three acting credits take us back thirty years
- 3:41Speaker 3: and includes an appearance on the thriller Along Came a Spider.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I think I remember that movie, Morgan Freeman and Daughter. Yes,
- 3:52Speaker 3: I do remember that movie. Most recently, he's been on
- 3:56Speaker 3: this series Riverdale and.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Bookie Samantha Cole Kylie Cook and with roles on both
- 4:02Speaker 1: The Bold Type and Unreal. Samantha's resume is quickly growing.
- 4:05Speaker 1: She has thirty six acting credits, including a role in
- 4:08Speaker 1: an upcoming movie called The Hunt for Love and based
- 4:10Speaker 1: on the cast and crew alone that hints at being
- 4:14Speaker 1: a Hallmark project, But I can't find word of any
- 4:16Speaker 1: official announcement.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Mmm.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 4:20Speaker 1: All right, let's talk first impressions of friends and family Christmas.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Go ahead, I'll go first.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I don't understand what the title of this movie is
- 4:29Speaker 3: and what it has to do with this movie at all,
- 4:31Speaker 3: I do, I do? Okay, please enlighten.
- 4:35Speaker 1: The end of the movie, they're all together, Amelia and
- 4:39Speaker 1: Danny with their families, and they're like, this is what
- 4:42Speaker 1: Christmas is all about, being with friends and family. Yeah, okay,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I think it kind of speaks a little bit too
- 4:50Speaker 1: like the idea of the Chosen family that Danny had
- 4:54Speaker 1: created for herself. I don't know, it's kind of a
- 4:56Speaker 1: weird way to get to it, but okay, yes, I
- 4:59Speaker 1: don't think that's the perfect title for this movie. My
- 5:02Speaker 1: first impression is, wait, how does going to more holiday
- 5:06Speaker 1: events help either of these incredibly busy women?
- 5:10Speaker 4: Right?
- 5:10Speaker 3: I did not actually understand that, because Danny was like,
- 5:15Speaker 3: I can't come home for Christmas because I'm so busy.
- 5:17Speaker 2: But now.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Here's my girlfriend and I'm going to go to all
- 5:22Speaker 3: of her events too.
- 5:23Speaker 5: What.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Okay, I don't want to skip ahead. Let's talk about
- 5:28Speaker 3: what we liked.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Well, if I can start. Obviously, I like the representation
- 5:33Speaker 1: we have in this movie. I look, I'm thrilled for
- 5:38Speaker 1: the idea of this movie and that it came to be,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and that I liked that in this movie we have
- 5:44Speaker 1: Amelia's father and Danny's parents have both fully acclected them
- 5:47Speaker 1: for who they are. There's no storyline of tragic coming
- 5:51Speaker 1: out stories. Yeah, they're just loved for who they are
- 5:55Speaker 1: and the struggles they have with their parents have absolutely
- 5:58Speaker 1: nothing to do with their relationship. We're in and well
- 6:02Speaker 1: done on that.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I agree. I absolutely agree with that. I think maybe
- 6:07Speaker 3: you've summarized all of my like since your first one.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Oh no, I'm so sorry, No, it's fine, Okay. In
- 6:14Speaker 3: addition to what you said, I love a fake dating trope. Yes,
- 6:19Speaker 3: I'm very drawn to movies like that, So I like that.
- 6:23Speaker 3: And in the last three years, we've watched a lot
- 6:25Speaker 3: of Hallmark movies and I can only recall one other
- 6:29Speaker 3: like main lesbian storyline, and that was last year's Love Classified.
- 6:36Speaker 3: But it also wasn't like this central part of the story. Yes,
- 6:40Speaker 3: so is this truly our first first?
- 6:43Speaker 4: Yes?
- 6:44Speaker 3: Wow, I mean, let's keep moving forward, Hallmark. I think
- 6:48Speaker 3: there are a lot of stories with a lot of
- 6:50Speaker 3: different people to tell, so I love the representation.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Like you said, on a very superficial level, I think
- 6:56Speaker 1: Humberly Gonzalez might be the most beautiful woman I've ever
- 6:59Speaker 1: seen on my television screen. She's so cute and there's
- 7:03Speaker 1: something very captivating about her acting to her character. I
- 7:07Speaker 1: like that the story didn't have her giving up on
- 7:10Speaker 1: her dreams for Amelia. She still is going to do
- 7:13Speaker 1: the travel bit. They found a way. Much like in
- 7:16Speaker 1: Mystic Christmas, we see this too. No one's giving up
- 7:18Speaker 1: their life, throwing away their dreams and their career to
- 7:22Speaker 1: move back to whatever their partner wants them to do. Yeah,
- 7:26Speaker 1: they're finding a way to make their lives work together.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And finally, While I did find Danny's parents to be
- 7:32Speaker 1: a bit overwhelming, and in fact, at one point I wrote,
- 7:34Speaker 1: Danielle's parents need to back the hell off, I did
- 7:38Speaker 1: love the boundaries are a real thing, mom conversation and
- 7:42Speaker 1: the growth that they had in their relationship with their
- 7:45Speaker 1: adult daughter.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that was good.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I really liked Danny's mom and dad. I agree, maybe
- 7:51Speaker 3: a little overbearing, but especially just like showing up without
- 7:56Speaker 3: telling her, but I'm telling her how to in her
- 8:01Speaker 3: romantic relationship. Yes, agree a little too much. But I
- 8:05Speaker 3: loved the mom. The mom made me laugh so much.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I enjoyed them.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I actually really enjoyed them.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Back to the Danny character. This is so superficial, but
- 8:15Speaker 3: I loved her wardrobe. There was one time she was
- 8:18Speaker 3: wearing like denim overalls with an orange sweater. Thought it
- 8:21Speaker 3: was real cute. Yeah, and she has it like one
- 8:24Speaker 3: shoulder off. Yes, it was very nineties to me. You know,
- 8:28Speaker 3: that was my heyday. And speaking of wardrobe, I also
- 8:31Speaker 3: really loved Amelia's black dress for the work Christmas party
- 8:35Speaker 3: had like that cape situation.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I liked Danny's black dress.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I thought it was so cute.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Her little yep, it was cute, it was too youthful
- 8:43Speaker 3: for me. I liked the other one was a little
- 8:46Speaker 3: more like reserved. And finally, I thought this movie had
- 8:51Speaker 3: a lot of diverse characters in it, which made me happy.
- 8:55Speaker 3: All of the artists and her roommate. I just thought
- 8:58Speaker 3: everybody was kind of like quirky and different and a
- 9:02Speaker 3: lot of like variations of humans. I enjoyed it.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I agree with all of that.
- 9:09Speaker 3: And I really did like the art teacher too. I
- 9:12Speaker 3: don't know she was an art teacher. I don't actually
- 9:14Speaker 3: know what her role was.
- 9:15Speaker 4: But.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah, the lady in charge at the studio, so to speak.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I saw who you were talking about. I thought she
- 9:23Speaker 2: gave good advice on things. Yeah, she was good. She
- 9:26Speaker 2: was good.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Okay, Well, let's move on to what we wished for,
- 9:30Speaker 1: which is a hard Honestly, this is hard for me.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Why well, I think because when we take a big
- 9:37Speaker 1: swing like this, you know there's going to be pushback
- 9:40Speaker 1: from certain members of the community. And I want the
- 9:44Speaker 1: movie to be great.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't want it to have any sort of
- 9:48Speaker 3: shortcoming because you don't want that to be like.
- 9:50Speaker 1: The look, we made this movie and it's stunk. To
- 9:53Speaker 1: be clear, I don't think this movie stunk, but it's
- 9:57Speaker 1: not making my top five.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Of the year.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I hate to agree with you, but yes, so I
- 10:04Speaker 1: found the pacing of this movie to be a little
- 10:07Speaker 1: bit slow. I agree with that, coming off of movies
- 10:12Speaker 1: like Round and Round. And then I followed my viewing
- 10:15Speaker 1: of this movie with sealed with a list. I thought
- 10:18Speaker 1: the dialogue. I love snappy dialogue. I love quick and
- 10:22Speaker 1: quippy and keep it moving. Not every movie is meant
- 10:25Speaker 1: for that, but I think this movie could have handled it,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and I would have liked to see a little bit
- 10:29Speaker 1: more of that. I just felt like we could have
- 10:34Speaker 1: moved it along. And I just think maybe the movie
- 10:37Speaker 1: needed a little bit more because that final scene, we're
- 10:39Speaker 1: there at dinner and we see these shots of them
- 10:42Speaker 1: smiling and laughing and cheersing and just enjoy it. It's
- 10:45Speaker 1: a long moment that I think was maybe doubly long
- 10:49Speaker 1: than it needed to be, and I thought, are we
- 10:51Speaker 1: filling space here?
- 10:53Speaker 2: Oh? Interesting? I would agree with that.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I feel like you and I were raised on Gilmour Girls,
- 11:02Speaker 3: and like that's the that's the fast paced dialogue we're
- 11:07Speaker 3: used to and want from things.
- 11:10Speaker 1: When you listen to audiobooks, what speed do you listen
- 11:12Speaker 1: to them?
- 11:13Speaker 2: I date it up, Yes I do.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And it's not just because I'm like getting through life's
- 11:18Speaker 3: ass It's like I just need information at a quicker pace.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Sometimes I just find your brain becomes accustomed to a
- 11:25Speaker 1: certain pace and when you drop below that, it feels
- 11:30Speaker 1: like come on, come on. Well okay, I think that
- 11:33Speaker 1: also leads into my next wish for here. While I
- 11:37Speaker 1: love Ellie Liebert, especially in a main role, because we
- 11:40Speaker 1: usually see her like as the friend I, her character
- 11:44Speaker 1: was too reserved for me and a little bit awkward
- 11:48Speaker 1: and speaking of pace, I think, like maybe a slower pace.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I don't, I don't know. I can't quite articulate it.
- 11:56Speaker 3: But it gave me a ton of anxiety watching her.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it just made me a little uncomfortable because
- 12:04Speaker 3: she seemed uncomfortable herself, like in her own being.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I think that's in I think that's intentional.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I'm sure it is. But I didn't like I didn't
- 12:15Speaker 3: love it, Okay, it just made me uncomfortable to watch.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Well, here's why I think it's intentional, which doesn't mean
- 12:21Speaker 1: you have to like it. I think she was meant
- 12:23Speaker 1: to be the foil to Danny's free spirited, artistic personality,
- 12:30Speaker 1: and she isn't quite comfortable in Danny's world. I identified
- 12:36Speaker 1: with Ali Liebert's character a little bit because there's zero
- 12:39Speaker 1: chance I'm getting on stage and doing karaoke. I don't
- 12:42Speaker 1: want to go do fun, quirky things. I'm much more
- 12:47Speaker 1: at home in a stuffy law firm party.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Well, this then makes me think like two steps forward,
- 12:54Speaker 3: like how's this couple gonna last? They're very different from
- 12:58Speaker 3: each other. And not to say that couple who are
- 13:00Speaker 3: very different aren't a match.
- 13:02Speaker 1: It's only been a week. It's not a terrible question
- 13:04Speaker 1: to ask of many of our Hallmark romances.
- 13:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:08Speaker 1: My other wish goes out to all Hallmark characters, and
- 13:11Speaker 1: that is just please stop jumping to conclusions.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Just so well, it wouldn't be a Hallmark movie without
- 13:17Speaker 3: this misunderstanding, right sure, And from Ali Leeberd's character, and
- 13:22Speaker 3: I understand she had been burned. But you're an adult,
- 13:26Speaker 3: you're an attorney. You can have hard conversations. M h.
- 13:30Speaker 1: You know how to.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Express yourself clearly.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So I guess she just wanted to leave before she
- 13:36Speaker 1: could get left.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I guess.
- 13:39Speaker 3: And that's a realistic trait that people have, right, But
- 13:45Speaker 3: I you know, this whole misunderstanding. All this information is
- 13:49Speaker 3: secondhand information that she learns that, you know, Danny got
- 13:52Speaker 3: this travel grant or whatever, and it's going to Japan
- 13:57Speaker 3: or Tokyo or somewhere. Maybe it's a week, right, they
- 14:01Speaker 3: asked the freaking question. Yeah, exactly. Well, like you said
- 14:05Speaker 3: earlier too. I hate when you take like two people
- 14:09Speaker 3: who each have their own busy lives, and then they
- 14:12Speaker 3: meet each other, and now one is expected to like
- 14:16Speaker 3: change every change all their plans just because they've met
- 14:19Speaker 3: somebody new.
- 14:20Speaker 2: It's dumb. It's so dumb.
- 14:22Speaker 3: It's like, be like, well, I'm gonna go to Japan
- 14:25Speaker 3: for six weeks, I'll be back. We can still communicate,
- 14:28Speaker 3: like just because they're not living they're not married, they're
- 14:32Speaker 3: not living together, they're not do you know what I mean?
- 14:36Speaker 1: Yes, those were details that would have been hashed out
- 14:39Speaker 1: in one simple conversation. I mean, how silly to blow
- 14:43Speaker 1: up this budding relationship where you guys clearly have chemistry.
- 14:46Speaker 1: That dance that they shared was very lovely and without
- 14:50Speaker 1: saying like, oh is this a temporary thing? And I
- 14:54Speaker 1: love Danny's line. Yes, I'm going, but I want to
- 14:56Speaker 1: come home to you.
- 14:59Speaker 2: But again, they only met each other a week ago, like,
- 15:03Speaker 2: for sure, come on, I want to come home to you.
- 15:07Speaker 3: I didn't hate it, Okay, you know what. I did
- 15:09Speaker 3: hate Teddy Bear hijinks.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Oh did not love it.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Gave me very much like Friends, Pivot Vibe, Mattress up
- 15:20Speaker 1: the Stairs.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I don't nope, nope, nope, nope.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I didn't really love that. And in fact, there were
- 15:27Speaker 3: some parts of this movie that made me lose interest midway,
- 15:31Speaker 3: mostly relating to like the auction and Danny's like photography.
- 15:38Speaker 3: I'm like, I not invested. Oh I don't care.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Get out of here with your photography, Danny.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 15:47Speaker 3: I mean I did like that whole thing where they
- 15:49Speaker 3: had the party and like she was explaining like she
- 15:53Speaker 3: does her reveal.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought that was kind of cool, but oh,
- 15:57Speaker 2: there isn't that. I didn't really it didn't keep my interest.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Okay, are you ready for digit see that? I am
- 16:08Speaker 1: and I just have two small ones, just one small one. Okay,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you go first the opening scene, the opening credits, we
- 16:16Speaker 1: see Danny taking photos and then like a couple of
- 16:19Speaker 1: the photos we get on screen, like right, after she's
- 16:22Speaker 1: taken them. Sometimes she's taking the photos in portrait and
- 16:28Speaker 1: the photo we see on screen is in landscape and
- 16:30Speaker 1: vice versa. This is little, but I am always curious
- 16:34Speaker 1: when we see them take a photo and then show
- 16:35Speaker 1: us the photo. How realistic is it that that was
- 16:39Speaker 1: possibly the photo they've taken, knowing obviously.
- 16:42Speaker 3: That anyway, that's all easy. Here are my two things. One,
- 16:49Speaker 3: did I hear a Taylor Swift reference in this movie?
- 16:53Speaker 5: Oh?
- 16:54Speaker 1: You did? I wish I could remember what it was,
- 16:55Speaker 1: but I remember clocking it.
- 16:57Speaker 3: It was something about her being the uh greatest most
- 17:00Speaker 3: famous singer songwriter, yeah, of our time or something like that. Yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 3: that's funny. And I think that's like two Taylor Swift
- 17:07Speaker 3: references in two different movies this season.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I think it's Yeah. I think it's a safe pop
- 17:13Speaker 1: culture reference to make for sure, for sure. And my
- 17:19Speaker 1: second thing is bravo to the editors during the texting exchange.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I love that they made the font big and then
- 17:27Speaker 1: they left it there long enough so I could read it. Yes,
- 17:31Speaker 1: I love that as well. Sometimes they're so tiny, I know.
- 17:35Speaker 2: So that's all I have.
- 17:37Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's give a rating for friends and
- 17:40Speaker 1: family for Christmas.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I gave it three stars, as did I. Okay, I
- 17:45Speaker 3: feel kind of bad because I want to give. Like
- 17:48Speaker 3: you said, like when they take risks on movies like
- 17:51Speaker 3: this because they're gonna get blowback. I want to love it.
- 17:56Speaker 3: This was just middle of the road three stars for me, you.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Know, and maybe ideally we get to the point where
- 18:03Speaker 1: we're not like feeling guilty about that rating, right, like
- 18:07Speaker 1: movies with representation deserve to suck too. Again, I don't
- 18:10Speaker 1: think this sucked, but you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 1: we got a diverse out of movie, so we're gonna
- 18:15Speaker 1: be great. Someone are gonna be terrible and points for
- 18:19Speaker 1: the network.
- 18:21Speaker 2: We'll get there for sure.
- 18:22Speaker 1: All right, thank you for listening to this episode of
- 18:24Speaker 1: Girls Gone Hallmark. We are sliding into the home stretch,
- 18:28Speaker 1: dragging ourselves across the finish line, but we're getting there,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and we still have three more movies for you this
