Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo — I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We're here to help you pick up Malay, one small step at a time. Lucas: Today we are going to look at two very handy words — di and ke. They're prepositions, like 'at' and 'to' in English. Luna: Oh nice. I remember we learned 'di mana' for asking 'where is' — so 'di' is 'at'? Lucas: Exactly. 'Di' means 'at' or 'in'. For example, Saya di rumah. Lucas: Saya di rumah. Luna: Saya di rumah. That means 'I am at home'. Lucas: Perfect. Now, 'ke' means 'to'. So if you are going somewhere, you say 'pergi ke'. For example, Saya pergi ke pasar. Lucas: Saya pergi ke pasar. Luna: Saya pergi ke pasar. 'I go to the market.' Lucas: Yes. Let's practice with another place. Dia di sekolah. Lucas: Dia di sekolah. Luna: Dia di sekolah. 'He is at school.' Lucas: And if you and I are going together — Kita pergi ke masjid. Lucas: Kita pergi ke masjid. Luna: Kita pergi ke masjid. 'We go to the mosque.' Lucas: Good. So remember: 'di' for where you are, 'ke' for where you are going. Luna: Okay, let me try a sentence. Saya di pasar? 'I am at the market'? Lucas: Perfect, Luna. Saya di pasar. Luna: And if I want to say 'I go to school' — Saya pergi ke sekolah. Lucas: Yes! Saya pergi ke sekolah. You've got it. Luna: These are so useful. I can already talk about where I am and where I'm headed. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a little scene. Imagine you're at home and I call you. Lucas: Luna, di mana awak? Luna: Saya di rumah. Lucas: Mari pergi ke pasar. Luna: Okay, saya pergi ke pasar. Lucas: Nice. You just used both di and ke in a conversation. Luna: This is really clicking now. Lucas: A couple more examples. Dia di hospital. Lucas: Dia di hospital. Luna: Dia di hospital. 'He is at the hospital.' Lucas: And — Saya pergi ke hospital. Lucas: Saya pergi ke hospital. Luna: Saya pergi ke hospital. 'I go to the hospital.' Lucas: Right. Now let's mix it up. You say: 'I am at the mosque.' Luna: Saya di masjid. Lucas: And 'We go to the school.' Luna: Kita pergi ke sekolah. Lucas: Fantastic. You're really getting it. Luna: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay like it's helping me... Lucas: Yeah, we'd love it if you could support the show. A couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. Luna: It really makes a difference. Okay, back to practice. So 'Saya di kedai' means 'I am at the shop'. Lucas: Exactly. And 'Saya pergi ke kedai' means 'I go to the shop'. Luna: Let me try one more: 'Dia di rumah' and 'Dia pergi ke rumah'. Lucas: Perfect. 'He is at home' and 'He goes home'. Luna: I love that 'pergi ke' is the same pattern every time. Lucas: Yes, it's very consistent. Just remember 'di' for location, 'ke' for destination. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I feel like I can actually use these today. Lucas: That's the goal. Keep practicing these, and next time we'll build on them. Luna: See you next episode! Bye! Lucas: Selamat tinggal!
