Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So we have movement, a lot of movement overnight on
- 0:02Speaker 1: this peace steel over Gaza, and the President announcing that
- 0:06Speaker 1: in the next well next week, the first few days
- 0:09Speaker 1: of next week, we should have hostages being released.
- 0:12Speaker 2: We are getting the hostages back on on Tuesday, Monday
- 0:17Speaker 2: or Tuesday, and that'll be a day of joy. I'm
- 0:21Speaker 2: gonna try and make a trip over We're going to
- 0:23Speaker 2: try and get over there.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It's all happening in phases. David Smith is Washington Bureau
- 0:27Speaker 1: chief for The Guardian with us this morning. David, So,
- 0:31Speaker 1: this is quite a momentous moment, but still a lot
- 0:33Speaker 1: of water to go under the bridge.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yes, that's right. I think we have learned from past
- 0:39Speaker 3: experience to always treat these announcements with caution and not
- 0:45Speaker 3: every breakthrough is what it appears. But I think it
- 0:47Speaker 3: would be fair to say this is by far the
- 0:50Speaker 3: closest we've come to and to this war. And it's
- 0:54Speaker 3: not just Donald Trump saying that that, Israel and Hamas
- 0:58Speaker 3: indicating that's the case, and certainly some signs of tremendous
- 1:02Speaker 3: relief on the ground that this could at least be
- 1:04Speaker 3: the beginning of the end. And I think, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 3: I guess everyone will feel more certain about that if indeed,
- 1:10Speaker 3: as Trump says, hostages are returned on Monday or Tuesday,
- 1:16Speaker 3: and if Israel agrees to you know, stop its well,
- 1:23Speaker 3: movie its sources back to the to the agreed line,
- 1:27Speaker 3: and we actually see a secession as hostilities.
- 1:31Speaker 1: And then you can start getting humanitarian aiden to the
- 1:34Speaker 1: Palestinians all that sort of stuff. What happens after that, like,
- 1:38Speaker 1: what is phase two? Do we know?
- 1:41Speaker 3: Well? I think it's going to get more complicated, of course,
- 1:47Speaker 3: after those headline breakthroughs, and there are still some puddles
- 1:53Speaker 3: to clear here, such as the disarmament of Hamas are
- 1:58Speaker 3: set out in that peace plan, and it's not especially
- 2:01Speaker 3: clear how that will be conducted and whether all members
- 2:05Speaker 3: of Her Mass will agree. Even going further forward, maybe
- 2:09Speaker 3: more like sort of phase three or four, obviously one
- 2:12Speaker 3: has to look to the future governance of Gaza and Tybe.
- 2:18Speaker 3: This plan suggests that neither her Mass nor the Palestinian
- 2:21Speaker 3: authority should play any part in that. And I think
- 2:26Speaker 3: something to watch is what is Donald Trump's commitment to
- 2:31Speaker 3: all of that. The peace plans suggest there'll be some
- 2:34Speaker 3: kind of independent international oversight body shared by Trump that
- 2:42Speaker 3: will will oversee you s effectively Phase two, three and
- 2:46Speaker 3: four and so on. But you know, from what we
- 2:50Speaker 3: know about Trump, does he have the staying power, the
- 2:54Speaker 3: the the attention span. Frankly, you know, after he's had
- 2:59Speaker 3: an opportunity he declared victory and get a great headline.
- 3:04Speaker 3: We know psychologically he's a kind of person who does
- 3:06Speaker 3: tend to then get distracted and move on to a
- 3:10Speaker 3: thousand other issues. But that said, you know there's a
- 3:13Speaker 3: team of Steve Wikoff, special envoy, Jared Kushner, his son
- 3:18Speaker 3: in law, others who maybe are determined to follow through
- 3:22Speaker 3: on this, and of course it's all been backed up
- 3:25Speaker 3: by international partners such as you know, Turkey and Katar
- 3:28Speaker 3: and so on.
- 3:29Speaker 1: David appreciate that analysis. This is one of David Smith,
- 3:32Speaker 1: Washington bureau chief for The Guardian. For more from Early
- 3:35Speaker 1: Edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live to News Talks. It'd
