- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:04Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo, and we want to
- 0:07Speaker 1: start the show today by of course congratulating Justin Verlander
- 0:10Speaker 1: on not just being a legend pick in the All
- 0:13Speaker 1: Star Game, but on his magnificent career. He announced at
- 0:16Speaker 1: the end of the season he will retire yesterday, Alana,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and of course this is a first ballot Hall of
- 0:22Speaker 1: Famer if you have ever seen one.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Ken, great to be with you. As always, Cooper's
- 0:27Speaker 2: Town waits for the great Justin Verlander. And it's funny too, because,
- 0:30Speaker 2: as one of your colleagues wrote, Tyler Kepner wrote that
- 0:34Speaker 2: it's the last of the three hundred win guys. Justin
- 0:37Speaker 2: Verlander is. And it's ironic that we're talking about that
- 0:40Speaker 2: during a week with a lot of pitching situations. What
- 0:43Speaker 2: more can you tell us?
- 0:44Speaker 3: Exactly, Alana.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And it's a week in which we had three games
- 0:48Speaker 1: in which there were significant no hit bids. We had
- 0:52Speaker 1: managers treating these situations in a way that offended some fans,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and we had the ongoing debate that we have had
- 0:59Speaker 1: in this now for I don't know a decade or more.
- 1:02Speaker 1: About pitcher usage and just how far you should go
- 1:06Speaker 1: with starting pitchers. Now, that is a systemic problem in
- 1:10Speaker 1: the sport, it's an industry problem. But each of these
- 1:13Speaker 1: situations this week, and this is what I want to discuss,
- 1:16Speaker 1: was different. And you can't compare Dylan SE's to Uri
- 1:19Speaker 1: Perez to Jared Jones, because, as I said, these are
- 1:22Speaker 1: all unique in their own way. Now, let's start with Cese, who,
- 1:26Speaker 1: of course took a no hitter into the ninth inning
- 1:28Speaker 1: against the Giants yesterday and came so close. But he
- 1:33Speaker 1: was allowed to go that deep into the game because
- 1:37Speaker 1: he's Dylan Sees. He's a guy who since twenty twenty
- 1:40Speaker 1: one has led the major leagues in starts, is fifth
- 1:43Speaker 1: in innings pitched. He is a starting pitcher who does
- 1:47Speaker 1: go deep into games. He is a veteran starting pitcher.
- 1:50Speaker 1: So you see with Keig and Matheson tweets right there,
- 1:53Speaker 1: John Schneider saying he wanted to give Cease the chance.
- 1:57Speaker 3: I'm a fan of baseball.
- 1:59Speaker 1: If I can let a player have that opportunity, I'm
- 2:02Speaker 1: going to do it every single time. So you might ask, well,
- 2:06Speaker 1: is Marlin's manager Clayton McCullough a fan of baseball. Isn'm
- 2:09Speaker 1: Pirates manager Don Kelly a fan of baseball? And yes
- 2:12Speaker 1: they are fans of baseball. But here's the deal with
- 2:16Speaker 1: Jared Jones. This is a guy who was making his
- 2:19Speaker 1: eighth start since returning on May twenty eighth from a
- 2:23Speaker 1: UCL repair a major elbow surgery.
- 2:26Speaker 3: It was his eighth start.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He had not gone more than five innings. Now, I
- 2:30Speaker 1: know it was seventy seven pitches, but you're not going
- 2:33Speaker 1: to take that chance with a pitcher like Jared Jones
- 2:36Speaker 1: who is coming off surgery.
- 2:37Speaker 3: You're just not. That is the way the game is today.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Now we can complain about the way pitchers are trained,
- 2:45Speaker 1: about the fact that teams do not encourage pitchers in
- 2:49Speaker 1: the minor leagues to go deep into games. There may
- 2:52Speaker 1: be overprotective of these pictures pitchers, but at the same time,
- 2:56Speaker 1: that is the reality. With Yuri Perez, this was same
- 3:01Speaker 1: thing Ury Perez. Seven perfect innings, ninety two pitches. Do
- 3:06Speaker 1: we want to see a perfect game, of course, we
- 3:08Speaker 1: want to see a perfect game, but Eury Perez Tommy
- 3:12Speaker 1: John surgery in twenty twenty four, an injury this season,
- 3:16Speaker 1: a thigh muscle injury, and he didn't come off the
- 3:19Speaker 1: injured list until June twenty fourth. It's a guy who's
- 3:22Speaker 1: had some injury issues in his career. You're not going
- 3:26Speaker 1: to push it. And that's what people need to understand.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I get it, and I want to see guys pitch
- 3:32Speaker 1: deeper into games too. But that problem, that problem is
- 3:35Speaker 1: starting in the minor leagues.
- 3:37Speaker 3: It's starting with the reward system.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's starting with what teams have done to change the
- 3:42Speaker 1: way they use starting pitchers. And that is a problem
- 3:46Speaker 1: that goes well beyond any individual decision. Those two individual decisions,
- 3:51Speaker 1: the Marlins decision and the Pirates decision. To me, Alana
- 3:54Speaker 1: and you might disagree, they were understandable.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I don't disagree with you. Brings me back when I
- 4:00Speaker 2: was covering the Los Angeles Dodgers ken and I know
- 4:02Speaker 2: everybody says I keep bringing that up, but there was
- 4:04Speaker 2: a situation Ross Strippling, very new, very young in his
- 4:07Speaker 2: green career, was throwing a no hitter at the Giants Stadium,
- 4:11Speaker 2: and at the time I think it was at and
- 4:13Speaker 2: T Park, and he was very very new in his
- 4:16Speaker 2: career and Dave Roberts had to pull him throwing a
- 4:19Speaker 2: no hitter. It may have even been a perfect game
- 4:21Speaker 2: at the time, throwing a no hitter certainly into the
- 4:23Speaker 2: sixth inning, but it was all about pitchcount. And I
- 4:25Speaker 2: remember when Dave took him out. Ross Stripling's dad called
- 4:28Speaker 2: Dave Roberts and thanked him for saving his son's arm
- 4:31Speaker 2: and thinking about his son's future, not just history in
- 4:34Speaker 2: that moment. But again, Dylan sees is a very different
- 4:36Speaker 2: pitcher at the time now than Ross Strippling was at
- 4:39Speaker 2: the time. How much does post season length play into this?
- 4:43Speaker 4: Ken?
- 4:43Speaker 2: What I mean by that is some guys are on
- 4:47Speaker 2: in terms of a pitch count or innings pitched in
- 4:48Speaker 2: the postseason, have way more innings pitched because their team
- 4:53Speaker 2: goes much deeper into the year.
- 4:56Speaker 3: All on. That is a great point and I'm glad
- 4:58Speaker 3: you're bringing up now.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Mike Petriello of him had a really good tweet about
- 5:01Speaker 1: this yesterday. He said, one thing I don't think gets
- 5:04Speaker 1: enough play when talking about starting pitchers getting pulled is
- 5:08Speaker 1: how much longer the postseason is now and how to
- 5:10Speaker 1: prepare for that? Ya Mamoto through thirty seven and a
- 5:13Speaker 1: third innings in the playoffs last year. Sandy KOFAX fifty
- 5:17Speaker 1: seven total playoff innings in his career. Now, why is
- 5:21Speaker 1: this relevant for the Marlins and the Pirates, Because as
- 5:25Speaker 1: of this moment, they're trying to get there, They're trying
- 5:28Speaker 1: to get to the postseason. They're trying to extend these
- 5:31Speaker 1: pictures probably to places Jared Jones and Uri Perez that
- 5:35Speaker 1: they have not been before. So even if you look
- 5:38Speaker 1: at it from the regular season perspective, you want Perez
- 5:41Speaker 1: and Jones pitching deep into September, then you want them
- 5:44Speaker 1: available for October. So Mike raises a great point. You
- 5:48Speaker 1: make a great point yourself, Alano, with this. Obviously the
- 5:51Speaker 1: postseason and the length of it is a factor, But
- 5:55Speaker 1: with the Pirates and Marlins, in these two particular decisions,
- 5:59Speaker 1: it was narrower that it was simply, Hey, these guys
- 6:03Speaker 1: are at a certain stage of the season, a certain stage.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Of getting stretched out. Oil press is stretched out.
- 6:09Speaker 1: We're not going to take any chances because of where
- 6:12Speaker 1: they are coming from physically.
- 6:14Speaker 2: All right, Before we wrap it up and get to
- 6:16Speaker 2: Dude in Dork of the Week, Justin Verlander three regular
- 6:19Speaker 2: season no hitters, one of only six pitchers in Major
- 6:22Speaker 2: League Baseball history to throw at least three no Hitters.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Congratulations justin Verlander Cooper's Town awaits all right, guys, this
- 6:34Speaker 2: is our episode is presented by Seat Geek. We certainly
- 6:37Speaker 2: appreciate them being a part of Fair Territory. With Ken Rosenthal,
- 6:41Speaker 2: the World Cup's been amazing. You can get World Cup
- 6:43Speaker 2: tickets on there. Albeit, I hope we've been saving for
- 6:45Speaker 2: a long time. All Star Game tickets. Go see Hunter Goodman.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Maybe he is in the home run derby. After all,
- 6:50Speaker 2: what would you want to see? Ken? I know Sho
- 6:52Speaker 2: Hee Otani is always a must watch, But if you're
- 6:55Speaker 2: going to go to Seek Geek and get yourself some tickets,
- 6:57Speaker 2: who do you want to see?
- 6:59Speaker 1: It would be the All Star geme And I remember
- 7:01Speaker 1: when I was a kid, I actually told my dad,
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think I was fourteen, I said, if I can
- 7:06Speaker 1: get tickets to the All Star Game, if I can
- 7:07Speaker 1: pull this off, will you take me.
- 7:09Speaker 3: The game was in Montreal.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I believe it was Montreal, and it well, definitely Montreal,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I just don't remember the year, and I swam.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I pulled it off. I got the tickets and he
- 7:18Speaker 3: took me to the game.
- 7:19Speaker 1: The All Star Game is one of the coolest events
- 7:21Speaker 1: and this year in Philly with the two hundred and
- 7:23Speaker 1: fiftieth anniversary of our country even cooler.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it just really makes sense. Of course, two hundred
- 7:28Speaker 2: and fifty years. I hope that Schobert and Harper do
- 7:31Speaker 2: participate in the home run derby because they are at
- 7:34Speaker 2: home all right. This episode, as we mentioned, is sponsored
- 7:36Speaker 2: by seat Geek. Don't forget thirty five million downloads. Sea

- 8:02Speaker 2: We appreciate it.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I'm the dude, so that's what you call me, ken.
- 8:11Speaker 2: We're switching things up a little bit this week in
- 8:13Speaker 2: terms of the order, so it is time now for
- 8:15Speaker 2: your Dude of the week.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Who is it.
- 8:17Speaker 1: My Dude of the week is the Kansas City Royals
- 8:19Speaker 1: Tyler Tolbert. Now I don't know that a lot of
- 8:22Speaker 1: fans have heard of this guy before this week.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I can't say I.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Was all that familiar with Tyler Tolbert before this week,
- 8:28Speaker 1: but here is a player who recorded hits in twelve
- 8:32Speaker 1: consecutive plate appearances. And as he said, it's a tough game,
- 8:37Speaker 1: that's really hard to do, and I'm gonna be humble
- 8:39Speaker 1: about it because there is some luck involved.
- 8:41Speaker 3: But good for him.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Here's a guy who is a thirteenth round pick in
- 8:46Speaker 1: twenty nineteen, three hundred and seventy ninth overall, never a
- 8:50Speaker 1: top prospect. He's twenty eight years old, and he's a
- 8:52Speaker 1: guy who really has attracted most of his notoriety for
- 8:56Speaker 1: his base running acumen. So Tyler Tolbert due to the week,
- 9:00Speaker 1: great job, and that was just a fantastic achievement.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yeah, awesome, Good for him. My dude of the week
- 9:05Speaker 2: is Eliezer Alfonso Junior. Now, this obviously was not because
- 9:09Speaker 2: of a historic moment, but what he was dealing with
- 9:12Speaker 2: in terms of a historic moment personally. So obviously everybody
- 9:17Speaker 2: knows about the earthquakes in Venezuela and what should have
- 9:20Speaker 2: been a wonderful opportunity and a wonderful moment for he
- 9:23Speaker 2: and his family. His major League baseball debut also came
- 9:27Speaker 2: with a heavy heart and a heavy mind, Ken, because
- 9:29Speaker 2: unfortunately his stepmother and his sister were one of the
- 9:33Speaker 2: two people in Venezuela who have perished because of the
- 9:36Speaker 2: earthquakes there. So on the date in which he had
- 9:39Speaker 2: to make his major league debut and had the opportunity to,
- 9:42Speaker 2: he was dealing with the death of two people in
- 9:44Speaker 2: his family that are very close to him. Another reason
- 9:46Speaker 2: I picked him as my Dude of the Week is
- 9:48Speaker 2: he certainly did not have to address the media and
- 9:50Speaker 2: reporters in the clubhouse after the game, and he chose
- 9:53Speaker 2: to do so on certainly what was a very emotional
- 9:56Speaker 2: day for him. So for that reason, congratulations on your debut.
- 9:59Speaker 2: But also am I due to the week for everything
- 10:01Speaker 2: that he is dealing with. Okay, we're moving on now
- 10:04Speaker 2: to urt dork of the week. All right, Ken, who
- 10:16Speaker 2: is your dork of the week?
- 10:18Speaker 5: All right, Alana.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Now I'm going to preface this by saying, these dorks
- 10:22Speaker 1: of the week, both mine and yours, are possibly going
- 10:26Speaker 1: to be rescinded in the league. Major League Baseball does
- 10:30Speaker 1: the right thing. These are temporary Dorks of the Week
- 10:33Speaker 1: pending better decisions. Now, neither of these decisions is an
- 10:39Speaker 1: egregious offense, But let's talk about some All Star and
- 10:42Speaker 1: Home Run Derby omissions. I'm gonna go with MLB as
- 10:46Speaker 1: dork of the Week for the Zach Wheeler omission. Now,
- 10:49Speaker 1: I get it, and I get that they pick the
- 10:51Speaker 1: teams and it's the players obviously having a say, and
- 10:55Speaker 1: the player ballot, and then Major League Baseball rounding out
- 10:58Speaker 1: the roster. There was an easy salution here to start here,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and it was with Zach Wheeler making the team over
- 11:05Speaker 1: Logan Web. Now, I know Wheelers started the season late,
- 11:08Speaker 1: coming off thoracic outlet surgery, but that's kind of the point.
- 11:11Speaker 1: This guy's coming off an injury that rex careers and
- 11:15Speaker 1: he's pitching at his usual brilliant level.
- 11:17Speaker 3: And Logan Web, he's been good. He had a great June.
- 11:20Speaker 3: I love Logan Web. But two San Francisco Giants on
- 11:23Speaker 3: the All Star team. I don't know that we needed that.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Now you might say, well, we didn't need We don't
- 11:28Speaker 1: need six Philadelphia Phillies either.
- 11:29Speaker 3: But that said, Zach Wheeler needs to be on the team.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And I know he's pitching Sunday, but he's already said,
- 11:35Speaker 1: Hey man, I'll pitch Tuesday. So let's go MLB fix
- 11:39Speaker 1: this one and have us rescind this particular dark of
- 11:42Speaker 1: the week now A lota, it is your turn.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I kind of feel like you and I are
- 11:46Speaker 2: on the same page, and mine is for Hunter Goodman.
- 11:48Speaker 2: How is Hunter Goodman not invited to participate in the
- 11:52Speaker 2: Home Run Derby? For all I know, there's not been
- 11:54Speaker 2: a lot of people chomping at the bit to get
- 11:56Speaker 2: into this thing. And if you're going to applaud the
- 12:00Speaker 2: Colorado Rockies, there's not been a lot of opportunity to
- 12:02Speaker 2: do so, and Hunter Goodman is one of their bright spots.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Now he is their representative for the All Star Game.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But the man has twenty seven home runs so far,
- 12:11Speaker 2: and I understand that people are going to say he
- 12:12Speaker 2: plays a corse field, but if you look at his splits,
- 12:15Speaker 2: he has more on the road than he does at home.
- 12:17Speaker 2: So Hunter Goodman should be able to or at least
- 12:19Speaker 2: be invited to certainly participate in the Home Run Derby. Again,
- 12:23Speaker 2: as you mentioned, that could be rescinded, but I definitely
- 12:26Speaker 2: think he is deserving a very deserving invitation to that
- 12:29Speaker 2: home run derby.
- 12:30Speaker 3: And let me make this clear, Alta, we will be happy.
- 12:34Speaker 1: To rescind the Dorka the week's honors for MLB if
- 12:37Speaker 1: they do the right thing.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Amen.
- 12:39Speaker 2: All right, We're going to get to a Thursday Inside
- 12:41Speaker 2: Dish right after this. It is our Thursday edition of
- 12:51Speaker 2: Inside Dish, unpacking the latest with the starting pitching market
- 12:55Speaker 2: at the trade deadline. Everyone can well, not necessarily, the
- 12:58Speaker 2: Mariners needs starting pitching. I know that you and Will
- 13:01Speaker 2: Salmon had a column today about the starting staff. Tell
- 13:05Speaker 2: us a little bit more about it.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Yeah, our notes column today had a number of items
- 13:10Speaker 1: about starting pitchers who.
- 13:11Speaker 3: May be available, may not be available.
- 13:13Speaker 1: And I'll start with one that we didn't write about today,
- 13:16Speaker 1: But of course we'll be writing about and have written about,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and we'll write a lot about at some point as
- 13:21Speaker 1: we get closer to the deadline, and that is Trek Schoogle.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Now you might recall, and I will call myself out
- 13:27Speaker 1: on this, when the Tigers were sixteen.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Games under five hundred. This was late May. They were
- 13:32Speaker 3: twenty two and thirty eight. I wrote, that's it. They're
- 13:36Speaker 3: trading him.
- 13:36Speaker 1: They're not coming back from sixteen under, well they're now
- 13:39Speaker 1: eight under. They're eight under in a week division, in
- 13:43Speaker 1: a week league, and you have the possibility of a
- 13:46Speaker 1: serious wildcard run, if not a division run. They're four
- 13:50Speaker 1: out in the wildcard race right now, just four games,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and with a positive run differential. They're looking at a
- 13:57Speaker 1: situation where, you know what, let's play this out, Let's
- 14:00Speaker 1: see where we go.
- 14:01Speaker 3: So Trek Scooble, I still.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Think he might be available, and maybe he's available only
- 14:08Speaker 1: at an extreme price. Who knows how this is going
- 14:10Speaker 1: to play out, but the Tigers are making this interesting.
- 14:13Speaker 1: You see the division right there, it's five and a half.
- 14:15Speaker 1: It's not insignificant, but it's not insurmountable either. Sonny Gray
- 14:21Speaker 1: Boston Red Sox could be named to the All Star
- 14:23Speaker 1: team with Rangers Suarez going on the il Sonny Gray
- 14:27Speaker 1: is another interesting one because the Boston Red Sox, like
- 14:30Speaker 1: the Tigers, are surging. And I didn't expect this either,
- 14:34Speaker 1: or I don't know that many of us did.
- 14:35Speaker 3: But here they are.
- 14:36Speaker 1: They've won I believe nine of eleven. They too are
- 14:39Speaker 1: in the thick of the wildcard race. They too have
- 14:42Speaker 1: a positive run differential, and their roster is looking more
- 14:49Speaker 1: viable of late, they've done some things to make things
- 14:53Speaker 1: a little bit better. Now they're waiting to hear on
- 14:54Speaker 1: the injuries potential injuries to Contraras and Sigler. But as
- 14:58Speaker 1: long as those guys are health they'll be in a
- 15:00Speaker 1: good spot in the Red Sox.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Who knows if they're going to sell.
- 15:04Speaker 1: So those are two guys that we thought would be available,
- 15:07Speaker 1: maybe as recently as a week or two ago, And no,
- 15:10Speaker 1: we're not so sure. Now you might say, okay, let's
- 15:14Speaker 1: talk about some pictures who could be available in Alana.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Who would you like to start with there?
- 15:19Speaker 2: Oh, that's a good question because there's a lot of
- 15:21Speaker 2: people that everyone is like, Terrek Schooble, Tarak Schooble, Trek Scoubel.
- 15:24Speaker 2: But Sunny Gray is an interesting case ken because he
- 15:28Speaker 2: had to wave his no trade class to even come
- 15:30Speaker 2: over to the Red Sox, so he likely would have
- 15:33Speaker 2: to do that again, but he did say he was
- 15:35Speaker 2: amenable to it if that was best for the team.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Do you see him going someplace else? And if so,
- 15:40Speaker 2: could Atlanta be a possibility?
- 15:42Speaker 3: Atlanta would be the obvious choice actually.
- 15:45Speaker 1: And as will and I wrote, Atlanta is close to
- 15:48Speaker 1: sunny Gray's home in Nashville. He has been at times
- 15:52Speaker 1: in his career kind of particular about where he wanted
- 15:54Speaker 1: to go. That's why he signed with Saint Louis a
- 15:56Speaker 1: few years back. And Atlanta has prospects. They also have money,
- 16:01Speaker 1: especially after saving fifteen million with the Jerks and Profar suspension,
- 16:06Speaker 1: so they should be in a flexible position again if
- 16:09Speaker 1: the Red Sox decide to sell. One thing about the
- 16:12Speaker 1: contract that Gray has that we should note he's owed
- 16:16Speaker 1: about forty million going into this year. He's owed about
- 16:19Speaker 1: forty million, but the Cardinals are contributing twenty million of that.
- 16:23Speaker 3: It's forty one million that.
- 16:24Speaker 1: He was owed at the start of the season with
- 16:26Speaker 1: his salary and buyout, and now actually after the Cardinals contribution,
- 16:32Speaker 1: it was down to twenty one million, which if the
- 16:34Speaker 1: deadline means it'll be about six million plus, not a
- 16:39Speaker 1: crazy figure for a team looking to add a starting pitcher.
- 16:43Speaker 2: What about Louis Castillo?
- 16:45Speaker 1: This is a really interesting one, Alana, and we wrote
- 16:48Speaker 1: about him as well. So the Mariners right now they've
- 16:51Speaker 1: got a six man rotation. All six guys are pitching well,
- 16:55Speaker 1: including Castillo, who had a rocky start to his season,
- 16:58Speaker 1: but since mid May three point twenty.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Five e looking like Louis Castillo.
- 17:04Speaker 1: He is the highest paid Mariner, he is a leader
- 17:07Speaker 1: on that team.
- 17:08Speaker 3: And yet you've got a six man rotation.
- 17:11Speaker 1: You've got one of the top pitching prospects, if not
- 17:14Speaker 1: the top pitching prospects at double A right now, left
- 17:18Speaker 1: hander cater and Anderson, third pick in last year's draft.
- 17:21Speaker 1: He's ready to come. So if you're the Mariners and
- 17:25Speaker 1: you need help right handed, that a leverage reliever. Obviously
- 17:29Speaker 1: they have the ability to trade a starter, and Castilla
- 17:32Speaker 1: would seem to be the obvious one. They're not going
- 17:35Speaker 1: to want to trade a Logan Gilbert or George Kirby,
- 17:39Speaker 1: pitchers with control. They would probably prefer to trade Castillo,
- 17:43Speaker 1: who has another year of control as well, but is
- 17:46Speaker 1: more expensive and seemingly would be in this case the
- 17:49Speaker 1: odd man out.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Now, that's said.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Mariner's president baseball Operation is Jerry Depoto and his general
- 17:55Speaker 1: manager Justin Hollander. They are not necessarily predictable. They are
- 17:59Speaker 1: not necessarily guys who will follow the path we as media,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think they will follow. So again, this is something
- 18:05Speaker 1: to watch simply because the Mariners have a surplus in
- 18:09Speaker 1: an area where most teams are short.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Can These two guys that I'm gonna say next are
- 18:14Speaker 2: probably the most intriguing to me just because of where
- 18:18Speaker 2: their team sits right now. Nathan Evaldi and Jacob de Grom. Now,
- 18:22Speaker 2: if you look at the standings, the Texas Rangers are
- 18:25Speaker 2: right there, They're only a half game out of first
- 18:27Speaker 2: place in the AL West, and they're in the postseason
- 18:30Speaker 2: right now. In terms of the wild Card if the
- 18:32Speaker 2: season ended today, do they move Evaldi, do they move
- 18:37Speaker 2: de Grom or do they stay pat.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Depends how they play, if they play well or even
- 18:44Speaker 1: mediocre enough to remain in the race, because that's all
- 18:47Speaker 1: you need to do in the American League and the
- 18:49Speaker 1: American League West, as you can see right there, if
- 18:52Speaker 1: they do that, it would be a surprise if they
- 18:56Speaker 1: even entertained moving either of those guys, along with coreys
- 19:00Speaker 1: Or who we wrote about as well. Now, both those guys,
- 19:03Speaker 1: de Grom and Evaldi have full no trade clauses, and
- 19:06Speaker 1: in the Grahm's case in particular, he likes Texas. I
- 19:10Speaker 1: don't know that he wants to leave Texas, so you
- 19:12Speaker 1: would have to convince him that the franchise is going
- 19:15Speaker 1: in another direction, and probably Evaldi the same before they
- 19:19Speaker 1: would even think about approving a trade. So I would categorize.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Those guys as unlikely.
- 19:25Speaker 1: But the Rangers are a team to watch in the
- 19:27Speaker 1: coming weeks because, as you mentioned, Alana, they are in
- 19:31Speaker 1: great position from a playoff competition standpoint, and yet I
- 19:36Speaker 1: haven't played well. Seeger Is out again, Wyatt Langford out again,
- 19:40Speaker 1: expected back after the break. They also are expecting three
- 19:43Speaker 1: starting pitchers to join them after the break or sometime
- 19:47Speaker 1: in the next three weeks, Jack Lyder, Cody Bradford, and yes,
- 19:51Speaker 1: Jordan Montgomery. So in theory, with an easier schedule ahead,
- 19:56Speaker 1: the Rangers should be able to push.
- 19:59Speaker 3: We'll see if they actually do.
- 20:00Speaker 1: They've been a disappointing team really for two and a
- 20:03Speaker 1: half seasons.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Now.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Yeah, some of the Kansas City Royals ken and that
- 20:06Speaker 2: kind of bums me out. They're last in the AL Central.
- 20:09Speaker 2: They're ten games out of the division, eight and a
- 20:11Speaker 2: half out of a wild card race. I doubt very
- 20:14Speaker 2: seriously that they get into the postseason, even in a
- 20:17Speaker 2: very weak American league. You hate it with you, Bobby
- 20:20Speaker 2: wit Junior and the talent that they have there, But
- 20:22Speaker 2: they do have some good starting pitching that I'm certain
- 20:25Speaker 2: other teams are going to be interested in, Seth Lugo
- 20:28Speaker 2: and Michael Waka. Now you think, you guys think that
- 20:30Speaker 2: they would need a massive package to move them. What
- 20:33Speaker 2: would that entail?
- 20:35Speaker 3: Top prospects and multiple top prospects?
- 20:38Speaker 1: And the reason for that is the Royals, with Bobby
- 20:42Speaker 1: Wit Junior and MIKEL. Garcia signed long term, with Vinnie
- 20:45Speaker 1: Basquentino still there, with Jack cagleon comming and Carter Jensen
- 20:49Speaker 1: coming on as well, they believe they can be good
- 20:53Speaker 1: next year. They should have been good this year and
- 20:56Speaker 1: they're not going to tear down with Witt and Garcia
- 20:59Speaker 1: signed long term. The other problem they have is they're
- 21:03Speaker 1: starting pitching is in a problematic place for twenty twenty seven.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Cole Reagan's will not be available after undergoing the UCL
- 21:11Speaker 1: repair until probably July at the earliest. Chris Bubach is
- 21:15Speaker 1: a free agent, so you look at that and then
- 21:18Speaker 1: you have the challenge of not really having much a
- 21:21Speaker 1: triple A ready to step in. The question becomes, Okay,
- 21:24Speaker 1: who's going to pitch for them next year? And that
- 21:26Speaker 1: is why they would demand a massive haul to even
- 21:29Speaker 1: entertain considering or entertain or consider trading one of those guys.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Now, Lugo is not having a great year. Waka, of
- 21:37Speaker 3: course is an All Star.
- 21:38Speaker 1: But I really don't see the Royals getting pushed enough
- 21:42Speaker 1: to trade either of those pitchers.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Ken, You've been doing this a long time at the
- 21:47Speaker 2: highest level, and I don't remember a trade deadline, albeit
- 21:50Speaker 2: it is a little bit later this year on August third,
- 21:52Speaker 2: but it is so convoluted because the American League is
- 21:55Speaker 2: so weak and only four teams I believe only four
- 21:58Speaker 2: teams have a winning record in the American League. How
- 22:01Speaker 2: does that look in terms of buying and selling and
- 22:04Speaker 2: the wild card standings, and how confusing this deadline can be.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Alana, you've kind of hit the nail on the head
- 22:12Speaker 1: right now with the deadline three plus weeks away.
- 22:16Speaker 3: You have all of this. I don't know even how
- 22:20Speaker 3: to describe it. It's this massive group of teams that
- 22:24Speaker 3: are in the mix.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Some of them don't deserve to be in the mix,
- 22:28Speaker 1: and some of them are just merely in the mix
- 22:30Speaker 1: because they're playing in a week division or a week league.
- 22:33Speaker 3: But that is the reality.
- 22:34Speaker 1: So I just had a GM ask me this morning, Hey,
- 22:37Speaker 1: who are the real sellers right now? Outside of San Francisco, Colorado?
- 22:42Speaker 1: And maybe maybe.
- 22:43Speaker 3: The Angels there aren't many.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Now, some of those teams will fall out that we're
- 22:49Speaker 1: not talking about here and they'll become sellers. Maybe it's
- 22:51Speaker 1: the Oriols, the Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds certainly are trending
- 22:54Speaker 1: that way, but as of now, teams are not ready
- 22:58Speaker 1: to make that judgment. And you've got this weekend and
- 23:01Speaker 1: they won't even entertain thinking about this until the sport
- 23:05Speaker 1: returns from the All Star.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Breaks, so it is convoluted.
- 23:09Speaker 1: It is kind of a messy situation right now, and
- 23:12Speaker 1: that makes it all the more fascinating too, because this
- 23:15Speaker 1: kind of situation, if it continues, could lead teams to
- 23:19Speaker 1: be more creative, make major leaguer for major leaguer type
- 23:23Speaker 1: trades because they will need to fill each other's needs.
- 23:26Speaker 1: All right, Alana, I want to thank you for joining
- 23:28Speaker 1: me as always, you're hosting foul Territory today.
- 23:31Speaker 3: I wish you well in.
- 23:32Speaker 1: That endeavor and moving back with Billy and Ken right
- 23:36Speaker 1: after this.
- 23:37Speaker 4: It's summertime. You know what we do at FT We
- 23:39Speaker 4: look for hacks. How can we feel like we can
- 23:42Speaker 4: do it all outside with something that's breathable, something that
- 23:46Speaker 4: feels premium. FABLETICX hooks us up. I've got the cloud
- 23:49Speaker 4: Jersey t It is super soft Crats, but it works
- 23:52Speaker 4: at the gym, it works when I'm on the show,
- 23:55Speaker 4: it works when I'm going to meetings. It is the
- 23:57Speaker 4: true super utility player.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Same here, differences. I got the nice stripe across so
- 24:03Speaker 5: you can have style and also have versatility because you
- 24:08Speaker 5: know what, I'm gonna go to the gym probably in
- 24:11Speaker 5: the same stuff that I'm gonna have my meetings in
- 24:13Speaker 5: and the same stuff that I'm gonna go out and
- 24:15Speaker 5: have breakfast in. So you know what.
- 24:16Speaker 3: This is where Fabletics got me and Kratz.

- 24:35Speaker 4: seventy to eighty percent off everything as a new VIP.
- 24:44Speaker 3: All right.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Time now for Grill and Ken the part of the
- 24:46Speaker 1: show where I answer your questions, Let's get right to them.
- 24:51Speaker 1: First question comes from Elvis Santoya, who asked Ken of
- 24:54Speaker 1: the teams that are clearly out of the playoff picture,
- 24:57Speaker 1: which is poised to capitalize the most at the trade deadline.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Interesting question because I'm not sure any.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Of the likely sellers right now are.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Going to really capitalize in a big way. I would
- 25:11Speaker 1: say the Giants, because they've got Louis Arise and they've
- 25:13Speaker 1: got Robbie Ray, two guys on expiring contracts, they will
- 25:17Speaker 1: probably do better than the Rockies will for whoever they might.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Want to trade.
- 25:22Speaker 1: That said, if the Angels actually sell, and we haven't
- 25:27Speaker 1: seen them do this in quite some time, then read
- 25:30Speaker 1: Debt Meers and Jose Soriana are in play, and then yes,
- 25:34Speaker 1: they would get more for those guys than the Giants
- 25:37Speaker 1: would for Arise and Ray, who are both rentals. Soriano
- 25:40Speaker 1: and Debtmers both have control beyond this season, So the Angels,
- 25:45Speaker 1: if they want to do it, they can be an
- 25:48Speaker 1: interesting seller, all right.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Next question comes from the Foul Territory Show. Good question.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Will Don Mattingly be managing the Phillies next year? The
- 25:57Speaker 1: answer to that question for quite some time now has
- 26:00Speaker 1: been no. He has said all along that this is
- 26:03Speaker 1: a short term arrangement. He doesn't expect to do it
- 26:06Speaker 1: beyond this year. But in an interview last night on
- 26:09Speaker 1: ESPN with Buster Only, maddally opened the door and said, yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I always thought of this as a two year commitment
- 26:15Speaker 1: to the organization, and I would entertain managing next year.
- 26:20Speaker 1: That's a pivot for him. Actually, it's a reversal from him.
- 26:23Speaker 1: It's even beyond the pivot. And it's going to be
- 26:26Speaker 1: interesting to see how this plays out. Obviously, the Phillies
- 26:29Speaker 1: are doing quite well, but they made a run at
- 26:31Speaker 1: alex Cora after Cora was fired, and the expectation is
- 26:36Speaker 1: they will make it a run at alex Cora again,
- 26:39Speaker 1: no matter what Mattingly does or what he wants to do.
- 26:43Speaker 1: So I would expect that the next Phillies manager is
- 26:47Speaker 1: still going to be Alex Corra. But to hear maddingly
- 26:49Speaker 1: say that, and certainly if the Phillies go far this season,
- 26:54Speaker 1: it makes it a more complicated picture.
- 26:56Speaker 3: Let's put it that way, all right.
- 26:57Speaker 1: One more question before we run this one for Wicked
- 27:00Speaker 1: Better fifty four, one of our best questioners who says
- 27:03Speaker 1: there's a lot of talk about potential trades between contenders
- 27:06Speaker 1: this year. Would you say those are harder trades to
- 27:09Speaker 1: make than a trade between a buyer and a seller
- 27:13Speaker 1: In some ways, yes, But in recent years the buy
- 27:16Speaker 1: cell type trades in which multiple prospects go for a
- 27:20Speaker 1: rental piece or a piece under control, they've become more
- 27:23Speaker 1: difficult too, because teams are so unwilling to trade prospects.
- 27:27Speaker 1: So if you're in a situation where you don't want
- 27:30Speaker 1: to trade prospects, maybe trading surplus off your major league
- 27:34Speaker 1: roster to address a deficiency is actually an easier way
- 27:38Speaker 1: to go.
- 27:39Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 27:40Speaker 1: We'll talk after August third and see how this all
- 27:42Speaker 1: plays out. All right, I want to thank everyone for
- 27:45Speaker 1: watching for listening. As always, we've got foul Territory coming up.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Alana is hosting Aeric Kratz and Kevin Pollar with her
- 27:53Speaker 1: Cody steven Hagen from The Athletic Are Great Tigers. Writer
- 27:56Speaker 1: and former Major League execu Jim Duquette will join them.
- 27:59Speaker 1: We are back Monday live from the All Star Site Philadelphia.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Have a great week everyone.
