- 0:00Speaker 1: We talked to Jeff Legwald on Mondays.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Jeff Legwald brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 0:04Speaker 2: Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight. You start with a job,
- 0:09Speaker 2: you end with a career, Leggie. I promised it, and
- 0:13Speaker 2: I'm a man of my word. Number thirty in the
- 0:17Speaker 2: opening round of the twenty twenty six NFL Draft, I
- 0:22Speaker 2: can certainly circle some positions of need on this Denver team.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Skill position talent requires an upgrade. You certainly need a
- 0:32Speaker 2: tight end. You certainly need a wide receiver. You're linebacking,
- 0:37Speaker 2: particularly your off ball linebackers probably could use an infusion
- 0:42Speaker 2: of inexpensive production. Number thirty in the opening round of
- 0:47Speaker 2: the draft, Leggie, where are we at?
- 0:51Speaker 3: Well, you know, kind of a bummer when you succeed
- 0:54Speaker 3: in the NFL. That's kind of a really nice high
- 0:57Speaker 3: second round pick. Well, uh no, I think you know,
- 1:03Speaker 3: having been in the locker room, been out there today,
- 1:06Speaker 3: you know, watching how Sean Payton went through the post
- 1:10Speaker 3: game and all of it. Hard for me to believe
- 1:13Speaker 3: that pick is an offense in some fashion. If if
- 1:16Speaker 3: the board falls that way, they One thing in three
- 1:20Speaker 3: drafts I've noticed is is Sean does stick to the idea.
- 1:26Speaker 3: You know, his his quote is always don't pass on
- 1:29Speaker 3: crystal because you need a blender. You know, they're not
- 1:32Speaker 3: going to take offense no matter what. You know, if
- 1:36Speaker 3: the board falls the way. But you know, if the
- 1:40Speaker 3: board allows it, it's hard for me to believe that
- 1:43Speaker 3: would not be a skill position player, you know, sitting
- 1:47Speaker 3: here one day after the season ended, as I head
- 1:52Speaker 3: to Mobile tomorrow to get started on the draft.
- 1:55Speaker 1: See, it's always draft season with Jeff leg Well.
- 1:57Speaker 2: By the way, Jeff, want one name that you consistently
- 2:02Speaker 2: bang the drum for here on this show last year
- 2:06Speaker 2: and look at jehan A Baron was This was almost
- 2:10Speaker 2: a borderline red shirt year for Jade Baron. And I
- 2:14Speaker 2: think he becomes a much bigger part of your defense,
- 2:16Speaker 2: becomes a starter next season.
- 2:18Speaker 1: But man, you gave us the name nick.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Emman worry an awful lot last year during the draft process,
- 2:25Speaker 2: and that dude is a friggin difference maker out there,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and he could be slipping a Super Bowl ring on
- 2:31Speaker 2: in two weeks.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yeah. And you know, look like scouts always say about
- 2:37Speaker 3: certain players, you know that you don't see many of
- 2:41Speaker 3: those you know on the planet, and you know that
- 2:45Speaker 3: his his combination of length, size, explosiveness, straight line speed.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I mean, it is all there, and yeah, he was
- 2:55Speaker 3: one of my favorite players on the board. In fact,
- 2:57Speaker 3: we did sort of this redraft exercise at ESPN in
- 3:00Speaker 3: the first two rounds and I was bummed. I couldn't
- 3:04Speaker 3: sneak them. I couldn't get them even in the redraft
- 3:07Speaker 3: when we did it.
- 3:08Speaker 4: So anyway, we will get to yesterday's game because there's
- 3:12Speaker 4: plenty to talk about at some point. But you know,
- 3:14Speaker 4: Nate and I were having an interesting discussion in the break.
- 3:17Speaker 4: It saw an interesting quote from Dray green Law today
- 3:20Speaker 4: talking about the difference of Sean Payton life versus the
- 3:22Speaker 4: Kyle Shanahan life, and honestly, Peyton, you know, Leggy, Evan
- 3:27Speaker 4: Ingram's role just never really materialized to what I guess
- 3:30Speaker 4: I thought it was gonna be after all the chatter,
- 3:32Speaker 4: all the all the lip service during the off season.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Are those two guys that are Denver Broncos next year?
- 3:38Speaker 5: Do they look to save money?
- 3:39Speaker 4: Is that gonna be a one and done kind of scenario?
- 3:41Speaker 4: What would be your guest? If early going?
- 3:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's early going. I mean that if
- 3:47Speaker 3: they make moves like that they're gonna be football decisions.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think they're done having to sort of worry about
- 3:54Speaker 3: cap stress at least right at the moment. I think
- 3:57Speaker 3: they have a very manageable situation. You know, Russell's finally
- 4:01Speaker 3: off the books, uh, starting in March, so you know,
- 4:06Speaker 3: they have a pretty much a clean slate to do
- 4:09Speaker 3: what they'd like to do. And they've got, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 3: a nice allotment of draft picks and you know, more
- 4:17Speaker 3: cash than everyone else basically, so I think they're in
- 4:21Speaker 3: position to do what they want. So if you know
- 4:25Speaker 3: they decide, you know, some of the veteran free agents
- 4:28Speaker 3: are one and done's, as it were. I think those
- 4:31Speaker 3: will be football decisions. And you don't make those decisions
- 4:35Speaker 3: unless you have an upgrade, you know, or the plan,
- 4:40Speaker 3: a doable, achievable plan for an upgrade, especially when you
- 4:45Speaker 3: you think you're that close.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Two defensive starters in particular, tell us what this process
- 4:50Speaker 2: is going to look like. John Franklin Myers and Jakewan McMillan,
- 4:54Speaker 2: and I.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Throw in their sternad. Do you think the old under
- 4:57Speaker 5: sternad and add him to the list.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Well, is Jaquan is a restricted free agent? So but
- 5:04Speaker 3: teams have gone away from the tenders because you know,
- 5:08Speaker 3: it used to be tender to guy, you know, early round,
- 5:11Speaker 3: first round, middle round, late round. But these days the
- 5:16Speaker 3: tender you can be cheaper and more cap friendly just
- 5:19Speaker 3: to sign the guy than to make a tender.
- 5:21Speaker 2: So you could give him like theoretically you could give
- 5:23Speaker 2: Ja Kwan like a like a three year twenty eight
- 5:28Speaker 2: or something like that, guarantee eighteen or twenty of it
- 5:31Speaker 2: or whatever, and you could save money in the long run.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, against your cap and it wouldn't cost you anymore
- 5:38Speaker 3: cash out the front door normally, So we you know,
- 5:42Speaker 3: certainly you could see that. You know, it's uh, you know,
- 5:46Speaker 3: it's kind of what the what's their long term vision
- 5:49Speaker 3: for for Baron? You know, do they see him on
- 5:52Speaker 3: the interior as a slot you know, hybrid or you know,
- 5:57Speaker 3: any of that. And I think they really have to
- 5:59Speaker 3: sit down and firm that up or you know, will
- 6:02Speaker 3: would he go to safety at some point? I think
- 6:05Speaker 3: they really have to figure out a definitive plan. You know.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I don't think his snapcount is indicative. I think it
- 6:14Speaker 3: would be unwise for people to think is snapcount is
- 6:17Speaker 3: indicative of what they think of Barrett and I would
- 6:20Speaker 3: tell people, don't get caught up in it was a
- 6:24Speaker 3: it was a bust. It's not what they wanted. It's
- 6:27Speaker 3: none of that. It's just how it worked out with
- 6:32Speaker 3: a lot of the defense. And they wanted him in
- 6:34Speaker 3: the mix and match role instead of putting him in
- 6:38Speaker 3: at safety when Brandon Jones got hurt. They wanted him
- 6:41Speaker 3: at the dime linebacker when they needed it. They wanted
- 6:44Speaker 3: him at corner when they needed it. It's just, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 3: Riley Moss played a thousand snaps this year. That that
- 6:52Speaker 3: kind of durability. You know, they had three thousand snap
- 6:56Speaker 3: players on defense, two of them are in the secondary,
- 6:59Speaker 3: so there wasn't much room for a young guy to
- 7:03Speaker 3: carve out some playing time. Hufanga and Riley Moss were
- 7:07Speaker 3: both thousand snap players, and that that used to be
- 7:11Speaker 3: the neighborhood of Justin Simmons, only you know, each and
- 7:14Speaker 3: every year. So I think things just didn't fall in
- 7:19Speaker 3: terms of playing time. I don't they don't love him
- 7:22Speaker 3: any less than they did last April when they took him.
- 7:24Speaker 1: And then Franklin Myers, Jeff, I think.
- 7:27Speaker 3: He can get more elsewhere. Yeah, you know, I think
- 7:29Speaker 3: I think that's one of those. You know, sure they'd
- 7:32Speaker 3: like him back, you know, but I think they're going
- 7:35Speaker 3: to allow those guys to test the market. You know,
- 7:38Speaker 3: I think they'd like a little more size on the interior.
- 7:41Speaker 3: I think they felt like occasionally they got no matter.
- 7:44Speaker 3: They had such a good year on defense. And I
- 7:49Speaker 3: don't think it cheapens justin Sternod's you know, pretty big
- 7:54Speaker 3: developmental improvement by saying they need a little more eyes
- 8:00Speaker 3: on the interior. You know, I think both things can
- 8:03Speaker 3: be true. So I think Sternod will probably see what
- 8:07Speaker 3: he can get. Even I think even Alex Singleton will
- 8:10Speaker 3: see what he can get. But they'd certainly like at
- 8:14Speaker 3: their price, you know, to have everybody back. They like
- 8:18Speaker 3: how they played defense, you know, for good reason.
- 8:20Speaker 5: All right, Well, you know, look, what could affect some
- 8:23Speaker 5: of these movies?
- 8:23Speaker 3: I would sorry, Andy, I would just add, I think
- 8:26Speaker 3: Franklin Myers, the situation is as Any is taking a
- 8:31Speaker 3: lot of those snaps, and they really like what he
- 8:33Speaker 3: did with him, So that could that could that could
- 8:35Speaker 3: impact it as well?
- 8:36Speaker 4: What about well, look advance moves, maybe some of these
- 8:39Speaker 4: guys jump with him. What do you think is going
- 8:40Speaker 4: to happen with Vance. It feels like the things have
- 8:42Speaker 4: gone a little quiet on the Vance front. While Davis
- 8:44Speaker 4: Webb got a lot of interviews today, what do you
- 8:46Speaker 4: think is going on with Vance?
- 8:48Speaker 3: Well, Vance had a chance to interview with most everybody
- 8:51Speaker 3: you know in the initial flurry, and you know, I
- 8:56Speaker 3: think he's gonna be you know, I don't know how
- 8:59Speaker 3: many offers he'll get formal offers, but I think he's
- 9:04Speaker 3: not gonna just jump at anything too. I think I
- 9:08Speaker 3: think he wants it to be right. It's a at
- 9:11Speaker 3: this point in his career, at his age, it doesn't
- 9:13Speaker 3: do you any good just to take a head coaching job.
- 9:17Speaker 3: You're pretty sure where you're gonna get fired in two
- 9:20Speaker 3: years again because they don't have the infrastructure. So I
- 9:24Speaker 3: think I think it all A lot has to go right,
- 9:27Speaker 3: including getting the right offer from somebody for him to
- 9:31Speaker 3: move on. I know all the players would love for
- 9:35Speaker 3: him to be a head coach because they like him.
- 9:37Speaker 3: But they really want him back, and that was clear
- 9:41Speaker 3: last night after the game and today when I was
- 9:43Speaker 3: out there. They they want that guy back. They want
- 9:47Speaker 3: the best for him, but selfishly they they want him back.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Jeff Lagweld with us on a Monday Jeff Lagweld, brought
- 9:53Speaker 2: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW
- 9:57Speaker 2: Local sixty eight. Start with a job and with a career. Jeff,
- 10:01Speaker 2: where was that game won by the Patriots yesterday? Where
- 10:05Speaker 2: was it lost by Denver?
- 10:08Speaker 3: Well? I you know, playoff You know, I've been people
- 10:12Speaker 3: sort of you know, it's easy to sort of get
- 10:14Speaker 3: in my caveman mentality, you know, old school and all that.
- 10:19Speaker 3: But playoff games are different. And I'll croak on that
- 10:24Speaker 3: hill because it's true, it will always be true. And
- 10:28Speaker 3: turnovers are the og of metrics. And you know they
- 10:34Speaker 3: lost momentum with the fourth down call and they probably
- 10:38Speaker 3: lost the game at the turnover. Yeah, because in a
- 10:42Speaker 3: playoff game, I mean, think about the Broncos lost their
- 10:46Speaker 3: Super Bowl chance because they allowed the Patriots to have
- 10:51Speaker 3: a twelve yard touchdown drive. That is the playoffs in
- 10:55Speaker 3: a nutshell right there.
- 10:57Speaker 4: All right, we'll let you weigh in on the question
- 11:00Speaker 4: of the day. We've gone back and forth. I mean,
- 11:02Speaker 4: to me, Jeff, here's my thing. I think the Broncos
- 11:05Speaker 4: should have kicked the field goal instead of going forward
- 11:07Speaker 4: on fourth and one. One of my reasonings is I
- 11:09Speaker 4: don't think they got a lot of push up front
- 11:11Speaker 4: if you're going to try the QB sneak and you
- 11:13Speaker 4: got a backup quarterback. And look, I'm gonna use your
- 11:15Speaker 4: words to ask the question. You say you need to
- 11:19Speaker 4: coach the team that you have, not the one that
- 11:21Speaker 4: you want. And I know you want bon Nixon there
- 11:23Speaker 4: to run the fourth and one, but you had to
- 11:25Speaker 4: back up in there to fourth and one. And to me,
- 11:27Speaker 4: that's why you don't do it. And of course doesn't
- 11:29Speaker 4: mind it because he's an analytics guy, as he probably
- 11:32Speaker 4: will tell you, and he likes the pedal to the medal.
- 11:34Speaker 4: He's not changed that profile one bit. What did you
- 11:39Speaker 4: think of the decision at that time you were out
- 11:41Speaker 4: at the stadium, neither neither of us were. Was it
- 11:43Speaker 4: the right move at the time? Or what would you
- 11:45Speaker 4: have done with the fourth and one call?
- 11:48Speaker 3: Well, I mean I I you know me personally, I
- 11:51Speaker 3: would have kicked it if I truly had the information
- 11:57Speaker 3: that the weather was coming in. And my understand standing
- 12:00Speaker 3: as both teams had the information that the weather was
- 12:04Speaker 3: coming in, because I specifically asked people about that, I
- 12:08Speaker 3: didn't want it to be that you made decisions in
- 12:12Speaker 3: the early in the game because you didn't have the
- 12:15Speaker 3: information in your hand. I mean, they folks knew the
- 12:19Speaker 3: weather was coming in, you know how bad or whatever that's.
- 12:22Speaker 3: You know, you can debate that, but you know, the
- 12:25Speaker 3: Broncos knew snow was coming in. So but he obviously
- 12:30Speaker 3: elected the momentum. I personally probably would have kicked it,
- 12:35Speaker 3: but I think going for it the perfect storm happened.
- 12:41Speaker 3: And I think what frustrates me about all these discussions
- 12:45Speaker 3: in the postseason especially, is for too long, all of
- 12:50Speaker 3: us who cover the NFL, who are fans, who who
- 12:54Speaker 3: talk about the NFL, we assume offensive coaches are smarter
- 12:59Speaker 3: than defensive coaches and that defensive coaches can't figure things out.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Mike Rabel won that play. He was smarter on that
- 13:11Speaker 3: play than the Broncos were. Sean Payton expected man to
- 13:16Speaker 3: man coverage, Mike Rabel gave him zone. So when they
- 13:20Speaker 3: ran a pick play that Mike Rabel obviously knew was
- 13:25Speaker 3: coming out of that personnel grouping, they ran a pick
- 13:29Speaker 3: play against zone defense, has no chance to work against
- 13:32Speaker 3: zone defense. Uh, Sean got out smarted. He went for it,
- 13:37Speaker 3: and Mike Brabel on that one play was smarter than
- 13:40Speaker 3: Sean Payton, and that happens. Defensive coaches are bright. They're
- 13:45Speaker 3: just as bright as the play callers on offense. And
- 13:48Speaker 3: sometimes the defense wins. And Mike Rabel won that snap.
- 13:54Speaker 3: They knew the play from the personnel grouping, and they
- 13:57Speaker 3: had the exact right call for it.
- 13:58Speaker 2: That's great and nalls this right there, Jeff kind of
- 14:01Speaker 2: to that point. And and we we have this conversation,
- 14:05Speaker 2: I feel like a lot, or at least we talk
- 14:06Speaker 2: around it a lot.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Fourth down and.
- 14:09Speaker 2: One, and Peyton even said afterwards they they had a
- 14:13Speaker 2: nickel run call. They called time out, and he went
- 14:17Speaker 2: back into his into his sheet, and he called the
- 14:19Speaker 2: naked boot and and to your point, Rabel solved it.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Zach Kerr and uh and Rabel solved it in that
- 14:27Speaker 2: moment and Milton Williams.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Blew up the play.
- 14:32Speaker 2: How much does Sean Payton, who I think is a
- 14:35Speaker 2: Hall of Fame worthy play caller, But how much is
- 14:40Speaker 2: Sean Peyton a victim of his cheesecake factory, of a
- 14:45Speaker 2: menu of plays directly in front of him.
- 14:50Speaker 1: That he's he's.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Always he's always looking for something just a little bit better.
- 14:56Speaker 2: He's almost he's a like a victim of his own AMBI.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think there. You know, I personally
- 15:04Speaker 3: believe there can be too much, and that a guy
- 15:07Speaker 3: who you know, they're just even having a conversation with
- 15:13Speaker 3: him about football. You can feel how many ideas are
- 15:18Speaker 3: swirling in his head when we talk about when I
- 15:23Speaker 3: ask him, you know, off to the side about football things,
- 15:27Speaker 3: what about this? Look? What do you like about this set?
- 15:32Speaker 3: You can just feel how many permutations he's going through
- 15:37Speaker 3: in his head. And I think that's that's always the
- 15:40Speaker 3: battle for great play callers on both sides of the ball.
- 15:44Speaker 3: You know, the same things are true on defense. You
- 15:47Speaker 3: you know so much, You've seen so much, and your
- 15:51Speaker 3: desire to, you know, find the open space is so
- 15:58Speaker 3: great that you just can't help yourself sometimes, Like when
- 16:03Speaker 3: I look at the snap and you know, I looked,
- 16:05Speaker 3: I charted the game this morning. Again, when I look
- 16:10Speaker 3: at that snap, I'm a run game guy. I I like,
- 16:15Speaker 3: you know, in my world, the Shanahan kubiak is the
- 16:20Speaker 3: unstoppable offense when done properly, especially against I can't even
- 16:25Speaker 3: imagine what Mike Shanahan would do against nickel defenses. Uh
- 16:29Speaker 3: these days. But when I look at that snap with
- 16:33Speaker 3: my run game face on. There is a duo block
- 16:39Speaker 3: to the left that is just unbelievably good. Yep, and
- 16:45Speaker 3: a run and a run play. The nickel run play
- 16:48Speaker 3: is probably going for twenty easily. Uh so.
- 16:53Speaker 2: But you know that's that would have been six zone
- 16:57Speaker 2: pretty good, you know.
- 16:59Speaker 3: But that's the way it goes. It's always it always
- 17:02Speaker 3: looks better from above, you know. That's why I always
- 17:05Speaker 3: look at end zone view when I do my all
- 17:09Speaker 3: twenty two and I'm grading quarterbacks, I go heavy to
- 17:14Speaker 3: the end zone view because it all looks good from
- 17:16Speaker 3: up top. I got no time for all of this. Hey,
- 17:20Speaker 3: look at this open guy over here. Yeah, you can
- 17:24Speaker 3: see it from the top. You know, the quarterback doesn't
- 17:27Speaker 3: play above the field. But it's just one of those things.
- 17:31Speaker 3: I think we just have to however you feel about
- 17:35Speaker 3: the math of it and the analytis of it, I
- 17:38Speaker 3: think we just have to say on that one play,
- 17:40Speaker 3: Mike Rabel got it right. Because he's really smart. He's
- 17:44Speaker 3: a really smart he was a really smart player. He's
- 17:47Speaker 3: a really smart defensive coordinator, and he's a really smart
- 17:51Speaker 3: head coach. And they were reading the Broncos mail on
- 17:54Speaker 3: that play and I think to me, that's the bigger
- 17:57Speaker 3: picture question for Sean Payton. Our people read your mail
- 18:05Speaker 3: because of your personnel groupings. Are people narrowing your playbook
- 18:10Speaker 3: because of who you play? When you know, when little
- 18:13Speaker 3: Jordan Humphrey and Pat Bryant are in the formation at
- 18:17Speaker 3: the same time with Adam Troutman, does the play sheet
- 18:20Speaker 3: go from sixty to ten? I mean, are they figuring
- 18:24Speaker 3: you out? That's the dilemma for the Broncos this offseason.
- 18:28Speaker 2: All right, Jeff leg Wall of VESPN, Leggie, I'm sure
- 18:31Speaker 2: you have deadlines and things to post, but we have
- 18:34Speaker 2: more questions. So we're gonna take a break. We're gonna
- 18:37Speaker 2: come back. We got to talk about Jared Stidham's performance
- 18:40Speaker 2: with you. We're gonna talk about a fourth and one measurement.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Hey, Jeff, just get in the car and get over here.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah, come on, you're fine, Just hang out and we
- 18:50Speaker 2: have more questions for you coming up next. Jeff Legwall
- 18:53Speaker 2: to ESPN as as we break down the post mortem
- 18:56Speaker 2: on the AFC Championship game.
- 18:58Speaker 1: So keep it here.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Well, let's jump back into it here with Jeff Legwald
- 19:01Speaker 2: on L to Dude Sports Radio ninety two five Leggy
- 19:04Speaker 2: u Sean's game plan for Jared Stidham and the execution
- 19:10Speaker 2: of said game plan. How did it all go besides
- 19:15Speaker 2: you know backwards pass fumble, well.
- 19:18Speaker 3: You know, I thought, you know, it was pretty telling
- 19:21Speaker 3: that when they were on the script, you know, they
- 19:24Speaker 3: they moved the ball very well. Yeah, so I think
- 19:26Speaker 3: they they obviously had the right idea coming out of
- 19:29Speaker 3: the gate. And that's not something they've been always good
- 19:33Speaker 3: at this year either, you know, coming out of the
- 19:35Speaker 3: half or opening games have not been there have not
- 19:39Speaker 3: always been their strength this year. So you know, when
- 19:42Speaker 3: you see a team move the ball like that, you know,
- 19:45Speaker 3: the big play to Mems that was a well scouted
- 19:48Speaker 3: look and they caught you know, like Rabel won the
- 19:51Speaker 3: fourth down play the Broncos had that one. That was
- 19:55Speaker 3: that they isolated what they wanted to and and Mims
- 19:59Speaker 3: you know, ran right.
- 20:00Speaker 1: By Christian Gonzalez, which is why.
- 20:03Speaker 3: And that's yeah, and he's he's a really really good player,
- 20:08Speaker 3: but he got caught looking a little bit and Marvin
- 20:11Speaker 3: went right by him. And you know, it's funny, you know,
- 20:14Speaker 3: it's it's doesn't have anything to do with anything but
- 20:17Speaker 3: from a football perspective. All of the defenders tell me
- 20:21Speaker 3: how Marvin is what they call a glider, like you
- 20:24Speaker 3: don't think he's that fast when he's coming up on you,
- 20:28Speaker 3: and then suddenly he's he's out the gate, and that
- 20:32Speaker 3: that was really evident on that play. Gonzales obviously felt
- 20:36Speaker 3: like he could flip his hips and have no problem,
- 20:39Speaker 3: but Mims was already gone, and that it made me
- 20:42Speaker 3: think of that yesterday. How many Bronco defenders have told
- 20:45Speaker 3: me in camp that that's Marvin's great skill is that
- 20:49Speaker 3: he looks like he's not in fourth gear, but he
- 20:52Speaker 3: really is.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Ah, Jeff, so much tune back from yesterday real quick.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Shouldn't they give him more snaps? Then?
- 21:02Speaker 3: You know, you're you know, you're triggering me right now,
- 21:05Speaker 3: I knowing both.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Of us, you know, I mean, look anyway.
- 21:10Speaker 3: It's the it's the great mystery of life that uh.
- 21:14Speaker 3: I mean, look at his yardage in the postseason compared
- 21:17Speaker 3: to the regular season because they had to play them,
- 21:20Speaker 3: you know, they had so many injuries. They finally had
- 21:23Speaker 3: to play them, and you know all he did was
- 21:27Speaker 3: come up with big catch after a big catch. JK.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Dobbins, do you think he's gonna be kept around. I
- 21:32Speaker 4: know he professed his love for the Broncos today. Do
- 21:35Speaker 4: you think there's any idea if they'll see see it
- 21:37Speaker 4: the same way? I mean, listen, he was an effective back.
- 21:40Speaker 4: I know you got to figure out if the injury
- 21:41Speaker 4: is going to be there. But I can imagine that
- 21:43Speaker 4: guy doesn't have you know, a lot of suitors that
- 21:45Speaker 4: he's going to be able to ask a big price
- 21:46Speaker 4: for him.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Could there be a marriage.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Here, certainly, but you know it's always price andy, even
- 21:52Speaker 3: even for a team with the cash reserves of the Broncos.
- 21:55Speaker 3: They're gonna They're not just gonna, you know, throw it
- 21:59Speaker 3: around for for no reason, you know, but it's only
- 22:04Speaker 3: an injury question for them. His production is not a question.
- 22:08Speaker 3: I mean, he led the team in rushing by two
- 22:09Speaker 3: hundred yards and he hadn't played since November sixth. You know,
- 22:13Speaker 3: he led the team in ten plus yard you know,
- 22:17Speaker 3: ten plus yard runs, had seven more than the next
- 22:21Speaker 3: running back, and he hasn't played since November sixth, So
- 22:25Speaker 3: production not a question in the least. And does anybody
- 22:29Speaker 3: in their right mind really believe if JK. Dobbins is
- 22:33Speaker 3: in uniform yesterday the Broncos aren't going to the super Bowl.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Yeah, what has certainly been helpful. Speaking of the run game,
- 22:39Speaker 2: Jeff the fourth and one Drake may Tush push with
- 22:44Speaker 2: the two d linemen on the field, you know, they
- 22:48Speaker 2: signal first down, they give him first down. Sean Payton
- 22:51Speaker 2: challenges the spot. You almost never see those overturned or
- 22:55Speaker 2: anything else like that. But as you looked back on it,
- 22:59Speaker 2: you saw the overhead view that obviously the Broncos staff
- 23:03Speaker 2: had had a look at right there. It's almost an
- 23:06Speaker 2: impossible question answer, but did the official did the officiating
- 23:09Speaker 2: crew get it right?
- 23:11Speaker 3: Well? I don't. I don't think the officiating crew agreed.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Right after the play, the guy on top, the down
- 23:17Speaker 3: official up top uh marked him as short and the
- 23:23Speaker 3: down official who ran in from the from the Broncos
- 23:27Speaker 3: side of the field gave it to him and for
- 23:31Speaker 3: whatever reason, they deferred. But I thought the guy up
- 23:35Speaker 3: top got it right. I didn't think he got it,
- 23:37Speaker 3: but you know, again, Uh, it's just one of those,
- 23:42Speaker 3: you know, archaic ways.
- 23:45Speaker 2: What's funny about it too, though, is like the call,
- 23:47Speaker 2: like the TV copy, I was like, I think he
- 23:51Speaker 2: got it, but then that overhead shot, it.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Was like did he get it. I don't know if
- 23:56Speaker 1: he got because you can see the ball a little
- 23:58Speaker 1: bit there.
- 23:59Speaker 3: I was lasered in on that one. I thought that
- 24:01Speaker 3: the guy up top got it right, yeah, after the
- 24:04Speaker 3: initial because sometimes you know, they've marked the ball, both
- 24:10Speaker 3: guys have run in and they're they're going to dig
- 24:14Speaker 3: the ball out from the pile to to put it
- 24:16Speaker 3: down where the where the down official has come. Uh.
- 24:21Speaker 3: But sometimes in doing that that the guy with the
- 24:23Speaker 3: ball is inching forward because there's everybody's still flopping. Yeah,
- 24:28Speaker 3: so the play is really over, but the ball is
- 24:31Speaker 3: still making progress. And I've seen many times over my
- 24:36Speaker 3: career where that progress is the post play progress.
- 24:40Speaker 1: As it were, is awarded and the players are going
- 24:42Speaker 1: to get coached to do that.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Oh yeah, why not? I mean, it's it's plus it's
- 24:47Speaker 3: some of it's just the dynamics of moving twenty mammoth
- 24:51Speaker 3: people out of a you know, a scrum. The guy
- 24:55Speaker 3: with the ball is going to flop around and roll over.
- 24:57Speaker 3: You know, he might move forward or when he does that, there's.
- 25:02Speaker 5: Got to be technology that helps.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Is the least ball that lights up the goal sticks
- 25:08Speaker 4: or something, so at least then you could put here's
- 25:11Speaker 4: the light up?
- 25:11Speaker 5: Where's the knee? Was it down? I mean, you get's
- 25:14Speaker 5: something something.
- 25:15Speaker 4: But I don't you know, I don't get you worked
- 25:17Speaker 4: up about these things only because like you just laid out.
- 25:20Speaker 3: There, these guys on a pile. Now the hell? How
- 25:22Speaker 3: the hell is the ref? Who's there?
- 25:24Speaker 4: Are fifty yards out from where they play, twenty five
- 25:27Speaker 4: yards out for where the play is even happening.
- 25:28Speaker 5: Why do we think anybody sees anything in there?
- 25:31Speaker 3: Now? You can like go on the on the web
- 25:34Speaker 3: and sign on and look at pictures from the Mars
- 25:37Speaker 3: rover that are crystal clear. Sure can't. We can't find
- 25:42Speaker 3: a way to not use the chain to measure a
- 25:46Speaker 3: first down in the NFL. It is an amazing uh.
- 25:51Speaker 6: I mean I I've been doing this my whole adult life,
- 25:55Speaker 6: as I always say, and sometimes I'm amazed that the
- 25:57Speaker 6: things they pick to to dig in about, and the
- 26:02Speaker 6: chain is just one of those things that sort of
- 26:05Speaker 6: amazes me.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Ah, Jeff Davis Webb, are we seeing him for the
- 26:11Speaker 4: last time on the Broncos sideline? Do you think if
- 26:13Speaker 4: it's not a head coach, it's an OC job? I mean,
- 26:17Speaker 4: how much of this is just kind of noising people
- 26:19Speaker 4: loving the name, and how much is real do you
- 26:21Speaker 4: think about him being a hot candidate for truly jumping
- 26:24Speaker 4: to a head coach position.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Probably both. Sometimes, as much as teams always say they
- 26:32Speaker 3: they do their own thing, there is a bit of
- 26:34Speaker 3: a group think. If suddenly somebody looks like a very,
- 26:40Speaker 3: very hot candidate and you haven't interviewed him, people don't
- 26:45Speaker 3: want to have to answer that question to their owner later.
- 26:48Speaker 2: So, Jeff, that's because the owners are all clicking on
- 26:51Speaker 2: ESPN dot com, reading the hot candidate.
- 26:53Speaker 5: Reading the Jeff Lagwald article.
- 26:55Speaker 2: They read the same stuff that all of us dopes do,
- 26:58Speaker 2: and then they call their football people. I think you
- 27:01Speaker 2: better talk to that guy. It's it's not as high
- 27:04Speaker 2: level as it looks to everybody.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Not always. You know, teams are using more search firms
- 27:10Speaker 3: than all of these people. You know, frankly, I think
- 27:12Speaker 3: they're they're taking a lot of their money to give
- 27:15Speaker 3: them the same list of candidates they would have had
- 27:18Speaker 3: on their own. Uh. But that's just the nature of
- 27:21Speaker 3: the They got plenty of money, you know that. It's
- 27:24Speaker 3: not a worry for them. But do we.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Start one of those That's right, I'm jumping ahead a little.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Soulting for but I, you know, I honestly, whether it's
- 27:34Speaker 3: this year or next year or whatever, if if Davis
- 27:38Speaker 3: wants to call plays, he is almost certainly going to
- 27:41Speaker 3: have to leave, unless Sean Payton shocks everyone who knows
- 27:46Speaker 3: him and suddenly decides maybe it's time I hand the
- 27:51Speaker 3: keys over to somebody. But you know, I don't get
- 27:54Speaker 3: a sense.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Uh.
- 27:55Speaker 3: He bristled at that big time, you know, when we
- 27:58Speaker 3: broached it earlier this season, just kind of on a lark, like, hey,
- 28:03Speaker 3: would you ever think about you know, and he clapped
- 28:06Speaker 3: back pretty hard on that. So you know, if Famous
- 28:09Speaker 3: Web wants to call plays in his coaching career, he
- 28:12Speaker 3: is probably like much like Gary Kubiak to leave the Broncos.
- 28:16Speaker 3: You know, if you you know, if if you want
- 28:19Speaker 3: to call more than some preseason games in an occasional
- 28:22Speaker 3: two minute drill, you're probably gonna have to leave.
- 28:25Speaker 1: He's Jeff Legwald.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Everybody ESPN dot com read all of his coverage of
- 28:30Speaker 2: the AFC Championship and the impending off season and draft
- 28:36Speaker 2: coverage at ESPN dot com. We got a lot of
- 28:39Speaker 2: time to be talking about it over the next few months.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Just tip of the Iceberg today. Jeff, excellent work all
- 28:45Speaker 2: season long. We'll talk to you Friday man.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Thanks Bellers, appreciate you.
- 28:48Speaker 1: All right.
- 28:49Speaker 2: That's Jeff Legwald with us right there on a Monday afternoon.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Like Jeff said, he is off tomobile to begin draft preparation.
- 28:57Speaker 4: By the way, I guess Lombardi's never leaving. He's not
- 29:01Speaker 4: calling plays.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I didn't see him get an interview.
- 29:04Speaker 5: I didn't either. He's just like, yes, what I do now?
- 29:08Speaker 1: He doesn't here Andy, he doesn't even get named. They
- 29:11Speaker 1: don't show him on TV. Yeah.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Maybe maybe maybe he's the smart one. Maybe he's got
- 29:17Speaker 2: the best gig in all of football. Yeah, just just
- 29:20Speaker 2: hang out and do whatever it is that he does
- 29:24Speaker 2: to help Sean finish his menu every single week.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Maybe maybe he laminates it. Maybe that's he's the one
- 29:30Speaker 2: that rights run the ball and Sean just.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Never sees it.
- 29:32Speaker 5: It doesn't Maybe that's why it goes down the way
- 29:34Speaker 5: it does.
- 29:35Speaker 1: You should have written it in silver and highlight.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Suber And we have the five biggest stories of the
- 29:43Speaker 2: day from around the AFC Championship game.
- 29:48Speaker 1: When we come back.
- 29:50Speaker 5: Oh, really, are we not going to do one that
- 29:51Speaker 5: shocked the world. It's on here. Uh there's a last one?
- 29:55Speaker 1: Who is there?
- 29:56Speaker 4: Yeah, dude, okay, I I was gonna ask Jeff for explanation.
- 29:59Speaker 1: I I, uh wait a minute, I hadn't seen this.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, hey, show up for number one, but you
- 30:06Speaker 4: better stay till number five.
- 30:08Speaker 5: That's all I gotta say.
- 30:09Speaker 2: You know, Andy, for a minute there yesterday, I thought
- 30:12Speaker 2: Jared Stidham kind of looked like that guy. It's the
- 30:14Speaker 2: Krackvin and Lyndall Show on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two
- 30:17Speaker 2: five
