- 0:38My guest today is kelly may,
- 0:40senior extension associate for family finance and resource management.
- 0:43Welcome kelly.
- 0:45Thanks for having me out here.
- 0:46So we are going to talk about a fun topic which is increased productivity and we're going to talk about finding flow.
- 0:56So I'm excited.
- 0:58Are you excited?
- 1:00Excited?
- 1:01I think it's a good feeling and we're gonna talk about how to capture that good feeling.
- 1:05Yes,
- 1:06I think that will,
- 1:08we will have lots of fun talking about this topic.
- 1:11So let's just get started with what is flow.
- 1:14So have you ever been so engaged in an activity?
- 1:18That time seems to melt away.
- 1:20You're working along and you look up and it has just been hours and you've really enjoyed what you're working on.
- 1:28Has that happened to you?
- 1:29I do find that that happens to me sometimes it's either I'm really,
- 1:33really engaged in what I'm doing and then sometimes it's because I really am enjoying what I'm doing.
- 1:39It could be two different situations without find myself and those are both important components of finding flow if you want to do it intentionally.
- 1:48So flow happens when you become absorbed in a job while you are enjoying it and it can happen with your work.
- 1:55It can happen at school or it can happen while you're playing or during your hobby time flow can increase your concentration and improve your personal productivity and we love and family finance and resource management to talk about productivity and how we can manage our resources to be more productive people.
- 2:15And so with some effort flow can be intentionally achieved.
- 2:19So how can we set the stage to make sure that we are more productive and that flow will happen.
- 2:27So first of all stop multitasking and I know we don't always like to hear that because the world wants us to multitask were asked to do so many things,
- 2:38we're all stretched in a million different directions,
- 2:41but research suggests that doing several things at once keeps the brain from deeply engaging with any one task.
- 2:48And flow cannot happen if you're not fully engaged.
- 2:53So the biggest thing you can do is to set aside specific times to work on projects without distractions.
- 3:00Now,
- 3:01besides that,
- 3:02researchers have noted eight specific components to creating an optimal flow experience.
- 3:08So if you want to try to make your own flow setting and sort of set the stage so it can just happen naturally,
- 3:18there are a few things you can do first,
- 3:20it must be a task that is doable.
- 3:23It's something you can complete and we'll talk more about that in a second I think so we're not eating an elephant.
- 3:28No we might be eating a frog,
- 3:31right?
- 3:32We might eat a frog.
- 3:33But it's something we can accomplish.
- 3:35So it's not necessarily something you like.
- 3:38That's what the frog is,
- 3:38something you don't,
- 3:41but it could be any type of activity.
- 3:45As long as it's something you can accomplish,
- 3:47concentration or focus needs to be able to happen.
- 3:50So again with not multitasking,
- 3:53being able to really hone in on what you're doing.
- 3:56So we need to turn off our email so we don't hear those beets right?
- 4:01Yes,
- 4:02there should be clear goals for the task.
- 4:05It helps if you can receive feedback,
- 4:07especially immediate feedback.
- 4:09The task should be absorbing.
- 4:12So you can be so involved and that helps your other worries and frustrations just fade away.
- 4:18It helps to have control over your actions.
- 4:20So you are you are driving,
- 4:23you're in charge and you stop worrying about yourself and you find that time stands still so those hours fly by that the minutes might feel long.
- 4:35I had to think about that one for a minute.
- 4:36The hours fly by but the minutes feel long so you feel like you've got time to plenty of time to accomplish it.
- 4:43But when you turn around and look at it it's like how did I get here in this amount of time because I feel like I haven't,
- 4:50it hasn't taken any time at all.
- 4:52I got it.
- 4:53Okay wow.
- 4:56So let's talk about that doable thing.
- 4:59What exactly could that doable thing be?
- 5:03What does that mean?
- 5:04Yeah,
- 5:05it needs to be something you can complete.
- 5:07So whether it's a work project or again a hobby or playtime or you're working on a paper for school or something,
- 5:16it can be any kind of work or project but it needs to know it's not necessarily something that's easy.
- 5:24Right?
- 5:25So challenge and skill are both very important to flow and they have to be in balance.
- 5:31If a task is too challenging it makes us anxious or frustrated,
- 5:36right?
- 5:36If it's way too hard we do not feel good about it.
- 5:39So it's really hard to find flow if you're not feeling good about the situation.
- 5:44However if the task is too simple it doesn't require good skills,
- 5:49you could be totally bored with it.
- 5:51So there needs to be a good balance between challenge and skill and that helps you work at your peak capacity.
- 5:58And so that's how you find that rhythm and that flow that we call it,
- 6:03that keeps you working at your best.
- 6:05So for example last weekend I decided or not last weekend but over the winter I decided that I wanted to redesign my flower beds.
- 6:16And so last weekend I took on the challenge and dug up old things,
- 6:23put in new things,
- 6:24changed the shape and replanted some of my old plants and put in new plants,
- 6:31but I've changed color schemes so that I've got a nice flow of,
- 6:36of colors and a flow of my annuals and perennials so that I'll have things blooming at different times.
- 6:43So all of this required me to really think about how and when things would bloom and what colors would be blooming at the right times and all of that sort of thing.
- 6:56So it required me to use a lot of brain power.
- 6:59But it also required me to use a lot of muscle power to make it happen as far as when I was doing all the planting and arranging and,
- 7:07and digging up and replanting and,
- 7:10and the weekend was gone before I knew it because I was really working pretty much all afternoon,
- 7:18both saturday and sunday,
- 7:21making sure that I got my flowerbeds planet.
- 7:24So I was in my flow.
- 7:25Right?
- 7:26Right.
- 7:26So you,
- 7:27so you felt good while you were working on it?
- 7:29Right?
- 7:29Oh yeah,
- 7:30my muscles hurt.
- 7:31But I felt,
- 7:31yeah,
- 7:32that's after.
- 7:33That's what,
- 7:34so after your actions,
- 7:37you're not worried about it,
- 7:38you had a plan,
- 7:39your task was doable.
- 7:41You were doing all the things on this,
- 7:43this eight item list and I bet you got feedback.
- 7:45I bet you drug somebody from your family out to look at it after you were done.
- 7:49That's right well,
- 7:50and I'll get more feedback as the summer goes along and we have different stages as as my flowers are working out there.
- 7:58So that's great.
- 8:00Yes.
- 8:01So yeah,
- 8:02I I get that I was in the zone I guess this is what I call it,
- 8:06but flow is what that's where you were calling it here.
- 8:10Yeah.
- 8:10And and so it's that process that's enjoyable.
- 8:13And if it's enjoyable,
- 8:14we want to do it again.
- 8:15And this causes us to stretch our skills and find new ways to use them.
- 8:19So the next time you design your flowerbed,
- 8:21it may be even more elaborate because your challenged level and your skill set have grown correct.
- 8:27Exactly.
- 8:28So is there anything else important that we need to do to make sure that we're creating flow.
- 8:34Glad you asked me that.
- 8:35The last thing I wanna mention is attitude,
- 8:38attitude is everything um pretty much with everything in life,
- 8:41right?
- 8:42But you work on a task,
- 8:44don't worry about the reward,
- 8:46you're gonna get trying to find enjoyment in the work itself.
- 8:50If the task is not something you enjoy,
- 8:52we talked about how it's not necessarily something easy.
- 8:56Sometimes it's a project that's difficult or stressful.
- 8:59Part of that is the attitude you take towards it and to see it as a challenge rather than a threat.
- 9:05So that helps you tackle it and it helps us control our stress level and again,
- 9:11you know,
- 9:11balance that anxiety and and find that control to help us get through the project,
- 9:18but not just get through it,
- 9:19enjoy it and to find that rhythm to get in that zone and put it right.
- 9:24Exactly.
- 9:25So if we go back to my flower bed example,
- 9:28I don't really care what anybody else thinks about my flower bed in in all reality,
- 9:33I'm the one who's gonna get enjoyment from the fact that it's,
- 9:36it's blooming and growing the way I want it to now.
- 9:40I think that other people will get some enjoyment from it.
- 9:44But in the end it's what matters to me,
- 9:47right,
- 9:47because I'm the one who's put all that work into it.
- 9:49So in that work is more enjoyable when you're using your skills and you find enjoyment in the work if it's something you find worthwhile and that was a project that was worthwhile to you.
- 10:01Exactly.
- 10:02And I probably could have recruited other people to help me do that.
- 10:07But it wouldn't have been,
- 10:08first of all,
- 10:09it would have been my project so much anymore and they wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed it because it wasn't their project.
- 10:16So I get it.
- 10:18It was my flow,
- 10:19not there,
- 10:19that was your flow.
- 10:20You found it.
