- 0:50slash Radio Detectives. On April seventh, the great Stan Freeburg passed away at
- 0:57the age of eighty eight. Freeburg was a comedy and satire legend, as
- 1:03well as a radio Hall of Famer. Fans of old time radio of all
- 1:07genres all a bit of a debt to us Van Freeburg, who was the
- 1:11host of the ever popular When Radio Was program from nineteen ninety five to two
- 1:18thousand and six. One thing that Freiberg did was his parody of Dragnets,
- 1:23Saint George and the Dragonnet. For the years, I've had requests to play
- 1:29that particular parody. However, that was made as a commercial recording and not
- 1:37something that was broadcast on radio, so I can't bring that to you like
- 1:41I do other old time radio programs. However, he did have a radio
- 1:47program that aired from January to September of nineteen fifty three. And in the
- 1:53course of that program he did a version of his famous dragnet parody. This
- 1:57is going to be a bit more comedy in a detective show. But in
- 2:01honor of mister Freiburg and his contributions to radio appreciation, we're making a bit
- 2:07of an exception to the rule. This program aired somehow most lastly in March
- 2:13of nineteen fifty four, and it's an episode of San Freiberg's radio sitcom That's
- 2:20Rich, and the title is income Tax. Well, this is income tax
- 2:25time. But if you owe the government more than you've got the real friendly
- 2:30about the whole thing, they let you pay as your goal. Of course,
- 2:35after you pay, where can you go? That's rip, Yes,
- 2:45that's Rich, Frank God's daring van Freeburg. Guys, Rich, we take
- 3:08you again to Hope Springs, California, that bustling little community just a stone's
- 3:13throw from the heart of Hollywood and the hall of Howard and Hazel Trump,
- 3:17where Hazel's fifty cousin, Richardy Will has living since his arrival in California.
- 3:23This is the dreaded Knight. When Howie does his income tax, he brings
- 3:27in his receipts for nineteen fifty three in an old shoe box, which he
- 3:30places on the dining room table. Hey, put your very in clear off
- 3:36this table. I've got my income tax to do tonight. Oh boy,
- 3:39let me out of here. I'm not happy You've got me help clean up.
- 3:43Let me warn you it how he turns into a monster when he's doing
- 3:46income tax. Ooh, sure, here's an enlightenment. The hope springs weekly.
- 3:53I thought to you might be innis. I'll read it. Federal income
- 3:57tax investigators have chosen this period to check are taxivators? Oh, that's just
- 4:01possibly with the hope of discouraging kizzling on the current return. That's standard.
- 4:06The town is said to be crawling with undercover federal tax investigators. That hair
- 4:12is just fine. They're crawling around when I'm making off my income tact.
- 4:17They're just after sizzlers. There. You are a chubler, are you da?
- 4:21Of course I'm not a chippler. Why are you, Willie? I'm
- 4:26not worry Look, I'm just trying to make out my chips, my income
- 4:33pact, that's all. Why are you taking off your glasses coming with I
- 4:36don't know. Suddenly my eyes kind of smart must be as smart. I'll
- 4:42be back to help you as soon as I get my cycle. Don't hurt.
- 4:46What are fike fapers? Let me taste papers for cleaning glasses only.
- 4:49Cousin rises use amount of glasses, he uses amount of his eyes? All
- 4:57happy? Oh, good night? Hey, look at this madsine here?

- 5:13without a don't worry here, we'll clean up the table right away. Oh,
- 5:18what's going on? Plenty? We're cleaning up boys? Oh well out
- 5:23help? Do you see my glasses anywhere? Oh? Use a taper,
- 5:28napps and to wipe the crumbs off the table. Oh, I'll do that,
- 5:30agel, hand me that shoe box, will you happy? Yeah?
- 5:35Okay? When you wipe the crumbs off the table, happy you could always
- 5:40wipe them into something, not just on the floor. Yeah, quick,
- 5:46are on the floor. I'll carry you off the shoe box with the crumbs.
- 5:49Keep your eye open for my glasses here coming down again. Okay,
- 5:55now this is gonna look more like we're in business here now, happy,
- 5:59I don't bunk you in my hair? Then me neither? All right,
- 6:03now, all right, nothing, nobody interrupt me. Don't even speak to
- 6:06them? Okay, gass? Who wants to Where am I receipt? Where

- 6:30about my glasses? No? No, no, my repeats they're gone.
- 6:33My glasses are also gone. Did you see me my glasses? No,
- 6:38my receipts? Have you seen them? No? Have you seen my glasses?
- 6:42No? Me neither. Maybe we can crust them. Maybe ask around
- 6:49here? My goodness, happy, how do you know about clept me yet?

- 6:58know stuff. I wouldn't even want you to know, So good night.
- 7:04Without those receipts, I may go to prison. Well you're fortunate, cousin,
- 7:09Hollie. See, without my glasses, I can't tell where I'm going.
- 7:15Well, so many paper look around, see if you can find them?
- 7:18Will you The best I can do is steal around, because say,
- 7:25aren't you Hollie? All right, all right, who cares? If I

- 7:35twenty six tent time forty actually of seven twenty six you see, six seven
- 7:45twenty six time, you wouldn't go to Alcatraz. I wouldn't know you'd go
- 7:53to Lovenwood. Maybe my glasses got schepped under this pile of papers. Don't
- 8:00see very well without the glasses, do you, Rich? Oh? No,
- 8:05In fact, that's why I wear him. If I find yours,
- 8:11can I get a reward? Come with okay? Oh boy, I find
- 8:16anything for a pop. If you come across something you don't understand, because

- 8:26during a coffee break this afternoon. Oh, cousin, Rich, you must
- 8:30be good, No, just lucky. I haven't much income. Rich doesn't
- 8:37know the first thing about it. Actually I do know the first thing about
- 8:41it. The first thing about it is you're supposed to print your name on
- 8:46the top. Because so much, I'll print my name on it when I
- 8:50feel like printing my name on it. Maybe we could make kind of a
- 8:54game of it that would be cut with me. I'll listen. Alcatraz is
- 9:01fourth characters who think income. Well, I guess I may as well go
- 9:07to bed. See about. The only thing I can do without my glasses

- 15:46truck do you have to track down? Is? Well? I don't know
- 15:52which one actually the one with my cousin Ali's income back papers and in preferably
- 15:58they're in an old shoe box and I put them in the trash and the

- 16:55me and the trash truck. We'll return to that, rich in the roma.
- 17:10We have our own text theory as what the Governor of North Carolina said
- 17:12to the Governor of South Carolina. He probably said, in all friendliness,
- 17:17keep a sharp ear off of the Jack Benny program Sunday nights and CBS Radio.
- 17:22Well, it's fairy possible. He didn't say that, But with Jack
- 17:25Marry Don Bob Dennis in Rochester and their finest settling years, isn't a good
- 17:30idea anyway, This Sunday night at the Star's address that Jack Bennichell is America's
- 17:34main highway to hilarity. And now back to That's rich starring San Freeburg As
- 17:41rich Well, Buckles and Richards have been on a wild crass truck chase all
- 17:55through their lunch hollers. Eleven times they have been told by the drivers that
- 17:59the trucks don't have Cousin Howick's income tax receipts. There are only a few
- 18:03minutes left for the lunch hour. Now if Freckle's car goes up before the
- 18:07officers of Consolidated Paper Body Dominator, it's too bad, Richard. But I
- 18:15think it's just helpless. Yeah, poor cousin Howid. He was crazy with
- 18:22those income tax receipts. Now you'll be even crazier without him. You can
- 18:29see, Richard, the woods are just full of trash tecks which are full
- 18:32of bottles and ten hands, but not income tax. The seat, guys,
- 18:36I don't know what to do, used to be right here I'll be
- 18:38back in a minute. I haven't I here. Okay, okay, woods
- 18:45are full of trash trucks. I got to track down those papers. Merely
- 18:51a job for a detective. Detective always plays a hunts. If only I
- 18:57had a hunt, I wish I would get sixty like the lot pole maybe
- 19:11or very lad or sorry, A little girl riding letter through. All of
- 19:25the color has been changed to present an investigation. This is the word I

- 19:42twelve or one that night, I called him into the ten forty, and
- 19:45I got my way up the ten forty twenty two point two. Come in,
- 19:48as I'm way to twenty two point two six eighteen come in. I
- 19:52added up at ten point twenty two point two in the sixty eighteen and got
- 19:53three percent of line one, whichever is greater blanks to the chief. He
- 20:00knew I was loading. He gave me one hundred percent, patted me on
- 20:06the pocketbook, told me I was a good cop. Eleven forty five.
- 20:11It happened I saw a little girl on the blue hood carrying a shoe box.

- 21:03shotguns? Well? Loving suspicious here all right? I mean they want to
- 21:08talk to you later, so don't leave the woods to get them down the
- 21:17path. Because you didn't know I'd sing in my bare eyes and feel in
- 21:18the basket when I suspected all along by vocals. My job get the grandma's
- 21:27before she did. I think A short cut along a rabbit's path through the
- 21:30brush A sort of a short brush haircut. I walked up to the cottage,
- 21:42rang the bell. Okay, grandma, it's a raid, a raid
- 21:51time loving old hazels. You've got the wrong grandma. Yes, ma'am,
- 21:56Treasury department. We just want to get the fact, but you get the
- 22:00reduction on your form. I'm on a high probing diet on a ten porty
- 22:10and turned over to the internal trash collector putting the trash truck. Bet.
- 22:17I put on my grandma's and got into bed. Come in, ma'am,
- 22:22Hello, Grandma, I got your fish. What are you doing in bed?

- 22:34a big suspinia you have in your pockets? All about to serve you with
- 22:38you under arrest doing your grandma operating your tax chiselers rings. That's fad.
- 22:42I shouldn't know knowing what, ma'am. You have nothing like my grandma.

- 22:52the grandma. Dad. Well, I see about the texts. I you
- 23:03gotta lead on them. One. I just played the hunch, the hunch
- 23:04with just a hunch, I played my luck. Somebimes, the hunch s
- 23:07pays off. Sometimes it doesn't. I was just lucky. I just play
- 23:11the hunt. I time I played washes. You did fight a hunt,
- 23:15A lucky guess. Sometimes the hunch plays off, sometimes it doesn't. You
- 23:17just fight the hunt. Does that gun tell me? Yeah, I just
- 23:22played a hunch, Richard, Richard, if you excuse me for saying so,
- 23:41Richard, you look as if you was sleeping with your eyes often without
- 23:45the glasses on. Oh gosh, I guess I was day dreaming. I
- 23:52have use for you. You know. My grandma just sends my view that

- 24:19I don't worry about picking out to taxes because he licks telephone. He's been
- 24:23terribly worried all day, but it's all over. He's bringing a tactic for
- 24:27to ask you a government man, a government man. Hey's now listen to
- 24:34me. I don't want anybody poking his nose into my income taxes. What
- 24:41are you so nervous about it? He no, Look, I tell you

- 25:12meaning to look all right, of course, every time it came out to
- 25:18a half fan. Well I got the half fan, that's all. It's

- 26:33but he likes this to add that's right. Truthfully, mister Dunstepper's head is
- 26:41just plastically like an ad with hair. Try him, because now he's getting
- 26:47coming to his head. He'll show you that's necessary. Going ahead, go
- 26:51ahead, give him coming to his head, give him something to add in
- 26:56his head. If you'll excuse me, Hey, could I speak to you
