- 0:29SPEAKER_01: And it is hot.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: It has been hot.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: But this is a hot podcast.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: It's because of you, Paul.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: It's the silver.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I think it's uh I think it's a combination.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: We're bringing some good stuff to the table.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: You know, bringing the heat.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Bringing the heat.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And uh, yeah, having a great time.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: This is episode 43, 44 overall, which is count zero.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Very nice.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: We're coming up on episode 50.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: We're gonna have to like do an extravagantry.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, something.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Um, let's talk about this day in horror history.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: What do you got?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Always like being surprised.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: We'll get in and out of this one pretty quick, but this takes us all the way back to one of the most classic monster movies of all time.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: King Kong.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: King the original?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: The original 1933.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Today is or would have been Faye Rei's birthday.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: If if she were still with us.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: How old would she be?
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Did you do the math?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I think uh 121.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: That's a lot of years.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: If she were still with us.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Um I love the original King Kong news.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: As a little boy, I'd pretend to be King Kong and climb up the Yeah.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I mean that's an inspirational flick.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, every creature feature.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: There's so much stuff that was birthed from King Kong.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it's it's just inescapable the reach and influence that that that film has.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: And that's pretty cool because we're talking about movies that came out on our birth year, and that's the year.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, you were born on that.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: What year did it come out for?
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: No, not quite.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: I was born a little later than 1933.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Not much later.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Uh as far as rewatches go, I rewatched one, two, three, four, five, six movies that came out in 1978.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: All my rewatches this you this week were the were the ones that we're gonna talk about in the main segments.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Oh well, my I watched one that I hadn't watched in years, and it's one we don't talk about when we should.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: So whenever you want to go, you want me to go.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna I'm gonna save them.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I got one I want to just mention.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: I'm saving all mine for the main event.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So yeah, tell me the one.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: A great, great film, Ethan Hawk, and it's not um Sinister.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is sinister.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: That's the one I watched.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Love that movie.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: That movie's legitimately scary.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Creepy.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yes.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: That's one.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: I actually just saw a list earlier this week, and it was like scariest movies ever made.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: And you know it's gotta be on there.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Well, oftentimes you read those kind of lists and you're just you just kind of roll your eyes.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: But this one did include Sinister, either at the top of the list or very near the top of the list.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: And I was like, wow, I can't argue with that.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: It's very bleak film, it's very bleak.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: It just sucks the life out of you.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, does not have a happy ending.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: No, it's a great movie, though.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Great movie.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: It is an uncomfortable pity your stomach ride.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And it's yeah, it's it's definitely deserves recognition for being among the scariest movies.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: And I yeah, I just wanted to mention, not I mean, me and you always watch horror movies, but I officially am kicking off.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: It's it's October to me already in my heart, and I'm really getting into motion fall, and so every night is a new creepy, scary movie.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Sure, sure.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Love it.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: All right, let's get into it.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: All right, so as we mentioned last week, we're gonna talk about the movies that came out the year we were born.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: So 1978 for me, 1985 for you.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: And do you want to start?
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: You want me to start?
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: I'll just I'll start real quick, and I'm just gonna get off the table the one if you're familiar with horror 1985, the number one horror movie of 1984 was Fright Night.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Okay, and I'm not gonna get too much into this because we've talked about it, people know it, love it.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: It is a classic vampire movie.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: I love everything about it, even to the dude's Mustang that's painted all different and everything.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: I've always loved that.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: It's a fun, fun movie.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: And I remember one of our first episodes we talked about this movie and how the vampire is an African vampire that he's always eaten an apple or some kind of fruit, and I thought that was really neat.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just like a bat would.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: So that's someone I wanted to get right off the table.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a great, great movie.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: It's a that's a classic that I go back to probably every couple years.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: You can't go wrong.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: And it's a feel-good horror movie.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Do you know what I mean?
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I I totally agree.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Well, I had watched six, and I'm gonna say five with an honorable mention.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna talk about my honorable mention right now.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: 1978, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And the reason why I'm gonna call this an honorable mention is because is it really horror?
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Um, here's the thing, and I've actually been meaning to bring this up for a while on the podcast, and this gives me a perfect opportunity to do that.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes, us horror fans will take something that is reminiscent of like a 50s creature feature or something that you might have seen on creature features, or something that you might have seen, you know, at the 50s drive-in that's not really a horror movie, but maybe it was shown alongside of a horror movie, and so it gets lumped in with horror movies.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: And you you're referencing Attack of the Killer Tomatoes falls into that category.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: It's it's kind of like your 50s like experiment gone wrong creates big monsters, but it's not really scary or a horror movie.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: It's not really horror to us.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Maybe it was in 1950.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Well, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes came out in 1970.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if this would have come out in 1950, it might have scared people.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: But um, I just want to give a couple of quick interesting notes about Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Um very low budget, obviously.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Absolutely bombed at the box office, destroyed by critics, destroyed by uh fans, even at the time, but then it found syndication during the 80s and went on a good 10-year run where between syndication and video sales, it became a huge cult hit.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And so 10 years later, um, I don't know if you knew that there was this many sequels, but ten years later they came out with Return of the Return.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Can you tell me what big movie star made his movies data close?
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Tom?
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: George Clooney.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: George Clooney, George Clooney's first movie was Return of the Killer Tomatoes.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: How about that?
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Uh then there was Killer Tomatoes Strike Back.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Didn't know that.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Then there was Killer Tomatoes Eat France.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: They're really milk in this franchise at this point.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: And then there was a Killer Tomatoes cartoon show.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: But I don't know if you remember that.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Saturday, Saturday morning cartoon show.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: I think it was early 90s, 9192.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: No.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: And then here's the big That's like the Sharp Nado of the 80s.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right?
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: That's a good parallel.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Here's a here's a fun little tidbit to bring it into uh modern day.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Next month, October of 2026, uh, there's a new Killer Tomatoes movie coming out.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Video on demand, so it's coming straight home.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Uh it's you know, everything this day and age is artificial intelligence, right?
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: That's that's what everybody's uh obsessed with right now.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: They're making a Killer Tomatoes movie that's going to parody our obsession with uh all artificial intelligence, and this one is gonna be called Attack of the Killer Tomatoes Organic Intelligence.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, cool.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Are you gonna check it out?
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: I love the enthusiasm, dude.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: It comes out, you know, video on demand in October.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be streaming that soon.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: You're taking that day off work just to watch.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Well, one more thing is uh Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was written by a man named Costa Dillon.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Costa Dillon.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Um has exactly five writing credits to his name.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: And it's the five Killer Tomato movies.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And that's all he did.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: That's all he's ever done.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And aside from that, he had like a 35-year career with the United States National Park Service as a superintendent.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: So this guy just goes and does his park ranger thing, and then every few years he cranks out an attack of the killer's game.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: He's a writer and director?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: No, he just wrote it.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, he just okay, he doesn't do any of the directing ring.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: He he writes the scripts and then he hands them over to somebody else.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Well, and it's probably the perfect job, you know, being out in the woods as a lone tub, I'm guessing.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: He can you come up with all the great ideas.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: I just thought that was super interesting.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: This guy, he's you know, he's got his regular old job.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: He's not a Hollywood guy at all.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Doesn't sound like that.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Every once in a while, in a few years, he cranks one out.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Is he doing this one?
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Have you watched all of them, Paul?
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: I have not watched all of them.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Okay, you may want to do that before the new one comes out.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: I think I might have to.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Do a little marathon of the killer tomatoes, dude.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: That's sweet.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I watched it, the original, this past week, and man, really goofy and and definitely one of the so bad it's good movies, but funny and fun, you know.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: Not horror though, is it?
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Horror comedy.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's not yeah, it's definitely if it's horror, it's horror comedy.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's more comedy than anything else.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: And that's your honorable mention.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna call that my honorable mention.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: That's cool though.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: That's neat, awesome.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, my first one I'm gonna start off with is have you ever heard of this movie called Phenomenon with Jennifer Conley and Donald Pleasant?
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: That sounds really familiar.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: It is one of the craziest stories you can think of.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: It's an American teenager named Jennifer, played by Jennifer Conley, attends a remote boarding school in Switzerland.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Jennifer is a sleepwalker who possesses a rare telepathic ability to communicate with get this insects.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And on top of that, there's a brutal serial killer who's murdering all these young girls in the surrounding area.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: And you know who she teams up with?
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: A wheel, a wheelchair-bound entomologist.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: I'm and he's played by Donald Pleasance.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: It's a really awesome movie.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: It's uh very different, and it's Italian horror.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: It was directed by Dario Argento.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Argento.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's why it sounds familiar to me.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: I have not seen it.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: You gotta watch it.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I'm glad I found one you hadn't seen.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: I have not seen it, but I am well aware of it as being a Dario Argento film.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: I've heard, you know, the name Phenomena um thrown about as one of his films.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: I have not seen it, so I'm gonna have to watch it.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: I think you would really like it.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: On top of that, Donald Pleasant has a chimp pet that helps him crack the case with the murder.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: You gotta watch it.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: I'm not making this up.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: This is awesome.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: This is on Tubi.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: This is awesome.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: This is like uh every which way but loose horror movie movie.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: And you know how you um her name uh Ashley from Hellraiser?
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Jennifer's my Ashley.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: From the she's is she's still gorgeous to this day.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: If she ever went to a war con, I would hey, marry me, please.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: I'll I'll do anything you want that.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: But check it out.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: So now that we brought in Dario Argento into the conversation, I know exactly which movie you're talking about, but I have not had the pleasure.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: This was my first time watching it.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, so it was really fun to experience this.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Well, that actually gives me a perfect segue to one of to my next one, which is Dawn of the Dead.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Dawn of the Dead.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Well, okay, good.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Now, how does the segue from Phenomenon to Dawn of the Dead make sense?
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: George Romero, with all the success of Knight of Living Dead, could not get fund financing for Dawn of the Dead.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: I don't know why, but he just could not find the money to get this movie made.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And guess who gave him the money?
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Dario Argento.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, cool.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: He stepped in and said, um, I was such a huge fan of Knight of Living Dead, I cannot believe that nobody's wanting to put the money up for the sequel.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: I'll put the money up for the sequel.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: All I want in return is the rights to distribute it outside of America.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: So if you saw uh Dawn of the Dead outside of America, it was distributed by Dario Argento.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: If you saw it within America, then you know then whoever whatever film studio ended up buying the rights to finish product.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: That's what you saw.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, what we saw in that's pretty cool.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: I never knew that.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: But I would love to do some research and wondering why no one would back you.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: It is crazy.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, Smash hit success of the original, and then everyone's like, eh, I don't see a future in the in our in a sequel.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: No, that doesn't make sense.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: How do you feel about Dawn?
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Um as a kid, I loved it.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: I absolutely loved it.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Uh when I rewatched it this past week, and I hadn't seen it in quite a few years.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Uh I still like it, but I think my younger self liked it a lot more.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: And there's a couple of reasons that I'm kind of surmising.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Number one is it's a super chaotic, non-stop kind of breakneck speed of yeah.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: The pacing and the editing is just like it's wonky.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it's really, really quick and all over the place.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: And there's it it's kind of just makes it feels like there's a ping pong ball in your brain, like just back and forth.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Back and forth.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know it's yeah.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think that's probably one of the things that I loved about as a kid.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: That as an adult, I'm kind of like, whoa, this is this is a lot to let's slow down here, yeah.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: And um it's got a lot of comedic moments that again I think I liked probably as a kid, but as an adult, does that take you out of the movie?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: A little bit, yep, a little bit, because uh Night of the Living Dead was so devoid of comedy.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was there was nothing funny.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Nothing funny, yeah.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: It's very bleak, it's very yeah.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Uh and so this one, and I understand what I didn't understand as a kid was that the comedy was meant to kind of be a uh a satirical commentary on consumerism.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Right, you know, the whole fact that it takes place in a shopping mall.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: I didn't get that angle.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Uh but now I look at it and I I say I I see what they're doing, you know, I see that they're making a commentary on shopping mall culture, which was big in the in the 80s, you know, or in the late 70s, early 80s.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: But um it just the the the the humor didn't it broke the establishment, it didn't land what you did in hot take.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: I like the remake better, Sack Snyder's.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the remake is is brutal and cool, the stylish.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Um I will say though that uh Tom Savini shines in that in this movie, not just as his first solo attempt at doing the effects, but he plays a character in the movie.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: He does, doesn't he?
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: And his character is pretty unchained and unleashed and really gets an opportunity to like chew up some scenes.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: And he does a great job.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: If you remember too, he's in the remake.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: He's in the remake.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's been he's had a lot of cameos over the years in a lot of different movies, but this one he was an actual he played an actual character, you know, gets somewhat fleshed out and has some significant screen time.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he really chewed the scenes, chewed up the scenes that he was in, and it was it was a lot of fun.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna see your dawn, and I'm gonna raise it to my day of the dead.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: And I I'm different with you on this because as a kid this was my favorite, and today this is my favorite.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: It's the punk rock, it's where we get brains.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, I love it.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: The zombies are awesome.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: The punk rock feel.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: I love uh you say Thorm.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Is that who you pronounce his name?
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Um the kid who in the beginning, you know, he's T-H-O-M.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, I think it's just Tom.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I think that's the British spelling of the time.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Well, I love it.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, he did this, and then '86 Jason Lives comes out and he's in that.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: So uh I I remember watching this as a kid, and I always was like, I'm gonna work in a medical supply building when I get older.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Because I just thought those two characters, the bubbling idiots in the beginning, and they released the gas.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: But man, this is one of my all-time favorite zombie movies.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Uh uh, in that of all the of the dead movies, Day of the Dead is my favorite.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, still to this day.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Um, and we talked about this when we did our uh Boggy Creek Monster Awards.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: We did the most deserved kill.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Was uh I forget his name now, Captain Something from Day of the Dead.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: He was the one that we were like, we he had it coming out of everybody.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: He had it coming.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: I think this is the most nudity, too, because trash, yeah, she really lets it all fly in this, you know.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: And I remember as a kid just wow.
- 18:51unknown: Yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: But man, this is it's a fun punk rock zombie, perfect 1985 feel to it.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: And it's still awesome today.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: It's still awesome today, dude.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Danny does great.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, really, really great.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: I don't think there's anything wrong with that movie.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: From beginning to end, I really don't keep my attention.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: I love the looks of the zombies.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: The characters are interesting, they play well off each other.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: It's a fantastic movie.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Um, all right, let's see.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go with uh one of, if not the most famous Jaws Rip-Off.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: And that's Piranha.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Piranha, yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Piranha came out in 1978.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: And uh I remember definitely seeing this like on Saturday afternoon TV as a kid, and uh watched it again this week, and I'm gonna go ahead and say it's underrated.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: It uh first time I ever saw this.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: I was parents were taking us to Disney World and to California, and we stopped at a hotel and it just started, and we all sat down and watched it on TV.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that's awesome.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Very underrated, isn't it?
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: I think it is underrated.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: I think it's campy, but it's supposed to be.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's campy by design, and it's it's uh it's a good, it's a good little flick.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Do you think it holds up anywhere close to Jaws?
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: No, not at all.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, these are tot two totally different movies.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: I did see an interesting thing where Jaws 2 came out in 78, and they actually tried to get an injunction to prevent piranha from being released because they were saying, like, oh, this is this is a blatant ripoff of Jaws, you know.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Steven Spiel Spielberg saw Piranha, like an advanced copy of it, and said, A, it's nothing like Jaws.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: B, it's great.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: C, let him put it out.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: And D, I'm gonna go ahead and when they I'm gonna go ahead and endorse it.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: And so he actually said, like, I guess I don't remember, you know, commercials in 1978, but I guess I guess he was he came out and said, like, go see it.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Like, people go see this movie, like you're gonna love it.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's really cool.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so Spe Spielberg was a was a proponent of Piranha.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Piranha.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: And um they made a couple sequels of those too, if I'm yes, they did.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: One of them was a 3D.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Piranha 3D.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Um, but here's the one thing that I didn't know as a kid watching Piranha.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, this was Joe Dante's first movie.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh Joe Dante, of course, goes on to make the howling.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Both Gremlins movies and The Burbs.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: For all the horror fans out there were very familiar with his work.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Horror comedy, classic words.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: Didn't realize though that he the piranha was his first solo directing gig.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: 1978.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: And Phil Tippett did The Piranhas.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: It's awesome.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: He was the Piranha guy.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, this was a rock.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Roger Corman production, which doesn't surprise me in the least.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: But Roger Corman initially set aside something like$800,000 for them to do this movie.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And then he had another movie going on simultaneously, and that other movie needed more money.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: And so he actually siphoned money from piranha and put it over on this other movie.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: And Piranha's final budget ended up being 200 grand.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: What did they make back though?
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, they made millions.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Good on millions.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: I love hearing that stuff.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: They made and the other movie that got all the money totally bombed.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: I can't remember what the other movie was called.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Was it a horror movie?
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: I don't think so.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: I think it was one of his like action at action.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: You know, Corman either did horror or he did like goofy action movies.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: If I'm remembering correctly, I could I could be totally wrong.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: I think it was called Avalanche.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: If I'm if I'm never even heard of it.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it didn't, it did nothing.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: It did nothing.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so Phil Tiffett had he said yes to the movie, thinking that he was gonna have more time and more money than he ended up having.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: And he ended up getting like, here's a check, and you got five days to do this.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Dang.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: And he was like, Are you freaking kidding me?
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Like five days?
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: So basically, it said that he was able to come up with like 76 piranhas, five of which were like quote unquote hero piranhas, like for close-ups and stuff, and then like one like arm, like a like a severed armed arm for the piranhas to like fight on, and they had to reuse the same arm over again.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: That's all.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: It's like a handful of piranhas and an arm.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: And that's everything was done.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Dude, that's making some lemonade after your one lemon, isn't it, brother?
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, good on them.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so yeah, uh uh Joe Dante and Phil Tippett come together and make this movie on 200 grand.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: And just off of that, deserves a watch.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Just off of that.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: When we talk about passion for horror and just making these low budget films, that's unbelievable.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Really, when you think about it, it's unbelievable.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Seriously, and to come out with a movie that's not just passable, but good.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Good, yeah.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Good and scary and bloody, and you know, it it still looks like a movie made in the 70s, but it has got a lot to offer.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And I'd say it's underrated, and I'd say don't sleep on it.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Definitely check that out.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna say this for if Fright Knight was the biggest horror movie of 1985, I think this is the biggest movie in 1985 for true horror heads such as me and you.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: I know you love this movie.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: I adore this movie, and that's Reanimator.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: I can never say enough about Jeffrey Combs, yes, Herbert West, and how he plays that and the whole watching this as a young boy, certain scenes, I was just wow, I can't believe what I'm saying.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: I know exactly which certain scene you're talking about.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Um we talked about this on our HP Lovecraft episode.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Um, but this is one of my all-time favorites, and I think it's partially because I saw it at the right age, and those scenes that you're talking about really embedded themselves in my psyche, and I never have been able to get over them.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: And I watch them now, and I even think, even now when I watch it, I think to myself, why do I love this?
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Why do I love this?
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: But we do.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: I find myself asking the center of it.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: You know, and I don't know how you feel.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: This is very Love Craftian more to me.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what I just said.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: We talked about this on our Lovecraft episode.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: This is not Do you think that's why you love it?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: This isn't just Love Craftian.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: This is based on a story you wrote.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Herbert West Reanimator is a Lovecraft story.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Is that why you think it's so ingrained in you?
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: Because I know how you feel about those.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Uh, I mean, I didn't really know what Lovecraft was back then.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: I think really just I saw this movie at the right age, and it just totally attached itself to me.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: And um, I go back to it every probably every two years, and every time I think, why do I love this so much?
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Because I don't just love it, I love it a lot.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: Would you I classify it's horror comedy to me.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Definitely.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Now the book wasn't meant to be comedy.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Um the movie is a hundred percent got a comedy slant to it.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Um the gore and special effects are phenomenal.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Notch, dude.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Why does pe why does this movie get slept on?
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: You don't uh maybe I like people who really, really know more, like every animator, but I mean popularity, it's not big.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: It's not huge.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: No, I think if you didn't see it at the right time, you're turned off by some of its content.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: What we're talking about.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I really do.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: I think that like there was a window, and if you caught it in that window, it's gonna be near and dear to your heart for the rest of your life.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: And if you see it outside of that window, if you see it outside of that window, it's going to kind of push you away, I think.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Maybe it was just the right time for both of us.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: I can remember just sitting down catching it.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: I was just encaptivated by the yeah, I loved it.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, everything from concept to execution, performances, especially the practical, it's outrageous.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: It's 100%.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: That's the perfect word for it.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Outrageous in the best possible way.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is a Stuart Gordon film.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: This is, I think, the first time that Stuart Gordon paired Jeffrey Coombs and Barbara Crampton together, and but it wasn't the last.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he did a bunch of these pairs.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: What and real quick, where do you rank Herbert in the world of mad men?
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: I think as far as mad scientists go, mad scientist movies go, this has got to be right up there with Frankenstein.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: I was just thinking that awesome.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: I I think that you know Frankenstein's probably one, Dr.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: Frankenstein's probably one, and and Dr.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Herbert West is probably number two.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Right there with him.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: A close second.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: But if you guys have never seen this movie, do me a do yourself a huge favor.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Find a way to get it.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: That's all I'm gonna say.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Keep an open mind because you're gonna be twisted up by certain scenes.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: But it's fine.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: I just can't get enough of it.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: Neither can I.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: So we we don't talk about that enough, do we, Paul?
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: No.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: And we we have mentioned it on the show before, but I think this is the most love we've given it.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think it's you know, rightfully so, it deserves its love.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Um, okay, I got uh three more still.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, two I want to talk about, and then one I'm gonna save for the end, and I'll just kind of touch on it because it doesn't need a whole lot said about it.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: But the next one I want to talk about is I spit on your grave.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, hardcore.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: Hard, hardcore dude.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: I remember watching this with a girlfriend in high school, and she's like, I'm not finishing this.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: She's like, I'm leaving up.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: This is not what you'd watch with a girlfriend.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: And it was my first time watching the I loved it, but she she's like, You're really out there, huh, Cody?
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: I was like, I love it.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: No, it was a bad choice for a first time.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Um I spit on your grave.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: I will say that um as far as rape revenge movies go, this is this and last house on the left are better to me though.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: But I mean, as far as like scenes of rape on camera, exploitation movies.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, I mean uh Last House on the Left did it first, and I Spit on Your Grave probably did it better.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: But both are you've never seen anything like this.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: It's hard to watch.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: It's hard to watch.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: It is really, really truly hard to watch.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: I will say one little anecdote about my personal um journey with this movie.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: My next door neighbor, who I've talked about a couple times, um, specifically, he's the one that introduced me to the whole world of Sam Raimi.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: Um he thought that just the title, I Spit on Your Grave, he thought that was just hilarious.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: He would, you know, when we talk about like funny titles or I can't believe they named this movie, you know, whatever.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: He would always bring up I Spit on Your Grave, like that's just such a goofy, silly, like it's just gonna kick out of it.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: It's just a pulpy name, right?
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: You know, and it really is.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: I get what he's saying.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: One day we're talking about it, and um, we both realized neither of us have ever seen the movie.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: You just knew of it.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we knew uh we knew of this movie called I Spit on Your Grave, and and what a pulpy, funny title, you know.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I think we were probably you had no idea what you were getting into, brother, did you?
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: None whatsoever.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: I think we were probably 12 or 13, something like that.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: And we're like, let's watch it.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, we're always goofing on it because of the name, the title.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Let's actually watch it.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: And then we both just sat there in shock silence.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: We watch it.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: I can just imagine two 12-year-olds like, uh, do we need to watch this?
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Like hoping our mom doesn't walk in or something.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: Like, goodness gracious, this movie is brutal.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: It doesn't hold back, does it?
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: It is hard, hardcore.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: This is um she gets her revenge though, dude.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: She definitely in space totally gets her revenge.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: And I love she the final line of the movie, she delivers it.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: What's the final line of the movie?
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: So I'm trying to hold on.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: I I uh I don't even know if I should record.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: When she's being raped, there's a guy who gets on top of her, he puts something right in her face and delivers his nasty line to her, and then uh she gets him on the back of the boat.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: I remember now and delivers that same line right back to him, and then she fires up the boat engine and totally cuts him to bits.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: And that was a cool that's that that was a very cool uh cherry on top of the Sunday.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Is this a feminist movie?
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, 100%.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Is it 100% because I could say it could go other way too, you know?
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: Well, Siskel and Ebert hated it for its portrayal of women.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Like Siskel and Ebert just said this is atrocious, and when if you treat a woman like this on camera, you shouldn't even be allowed to like show it publicly kind of a thing.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: But I look at it the other way.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: And video nasties agreed with uh Siskel and Ebert.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Of course they did.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: But if you just do a simple Google search, there are thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of people who support this movie as a feminist, absolutely like a fantastic example of like feminism and you know, girl power and strong independent woman who gets that revenge, takes care of the man.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: She doesn't and she doesn't go to anybody for help.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: No, she does it on her own.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: When you when you talk about Last House on the Left, um it's really her parents who end up getting the revenge for like on her behalf, right?
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: But this movie, she doesn't she doesn't enlist the help of anybody.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: She just breaks, doesn't she doesn't tell the cops or anything.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: She there's a montage in the middle of the movie that's just her healing from the attack and waiting for herself to be strong enough enough to seek revenge.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: And then when it's time, and she does, brother.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Does it unleashes hell?
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: She takes each one of them out, she isolates each one and takes them out one by one.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: And you can't help but cheer on.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Like you're really, really, really rooting for this.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: You're invested in the room.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're kind of broken at this time, but yeah.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: No, this is uh if you choose to watch this, just be warned.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's it's brutal, guys.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: But it is a I would say it's a very important movie, you know, in addition to being a great horror film.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's what I would say.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: That's nice.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: Mine is uh I this movie's very special to me.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: As a kid, I hated it, hated it, hated it.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, Friday 13th, a new beginning.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: This is the one that people hated, and I don't think it still gets a lot of love.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Of course, we don't get Jason.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: We find out Roy Burns is the killer.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's one of the highest body counts for Friday the 13th.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: If 20 kills.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: 20 kills, and I think it still holds the record.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: It's the sleaziest.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: It was directed by a porno director.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, porn director.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: But the kills are awesome.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: I I I like I said, as a kid, I was like, I'm being gypped.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: I felt like Halloween 3.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: Like, where's my Jason?
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: I love the dream sequences of or the hallucination Jason with Toddmy's having.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: But seeing Jason in the mirror and it was about 10 years ago.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: I was like, I'm really gonna give a new beginning a chance and sit down and really watch this movie.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: And I loved everything about it.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: I think it could have been better if it wasn't called Friday the 13th.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: If it had a different name to it, I think it would have got a lot more love, kind of like Halloween.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Season of the Witch.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: If you just say Season of the Witch.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's I I mean, it's a classic, 1985.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give you a controversial take.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: Uh and we talked about this during our Friday the 13th episode.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: But I think the mask with the blue chevrons might be the best mask of the whole series.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Who you better like you're talking to different fighting words.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: I love that mask.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: I love it, but I'm never gonna put it above three or four, you know.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: I can't do it.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: Well, um I do like it though.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: I've got two of them.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I think it's a fantastic mask.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: I think it it's in the at least in the conversation as being one of the best masks in the series.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: I would say feel about um them ripping off Mikey's look, though, with the uh blue jumps and or it's actually greenish.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: Looks blue in the movie.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, it makes sense for the character.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: I think he looks good in it.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think he looks good in it too.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: I I um but yeah, it does definitely heavily borrow from Halloween.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Um, but I have no problem with it because it makes sense for the character.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: This is what the guy would have warned.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: Dude, I want to do something.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: I want to make a fan film, and here's the story.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: You know, his son, Roy starts killing because Joey gets killed because of the chocolate bar and all that.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I want to play in real time that Roy was.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: I was a little baby.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: I was born in 1985.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: He was my dad, I go crazy, and I'm getting revenge for them killing my father Roy.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: And I don't the blue chevron mask.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, didn't he?
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: You know, in honor of Roy.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Wouldn't that be cool?
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: That would be very cool.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: That's a good idea.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: But no, that um a new beginning, I love it.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, hate it as a kid, love it, man.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: I will say that, and I think I said this on our house on our Friday 13th episode.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: Um, I liked it better this time around.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: I think I think it's definitely grown on me over the years.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: It's got fun characters like the old lady who cusses up a storm and her son Junior.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: It's classic, dude.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: And he's always riding around on that little dirty.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: That's how it gets us demise.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Roy chops his head off with the cleaver.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: Yep, yeah.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm gonna switch up my order because I said I was gonna save this one for last, but you just mentioned the Michael Myers jumpsuit.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna go ahead and just talk about Halloween.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: You got to.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: It's it's you can't talk about 1978 and not talk about Halloween.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: That being said, we've talked so much about uh Halloween in the past, and you all probably have seen it, you know, as much as we have, so we don't need to spend a whole lot of time on it.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: But right before we hit record on this episode, Cody and I were chatting, and we just kind of gave Halloween the crown of being the first slasher.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: The goat of slashers, huh?
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Would you say it's the goat of slashers?
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: Um I would say it's the blueprint of all slashers.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: Because guys, Paul said something to me, and I don't know how you guys feel about this.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: He said Texas Chainsaw Massacre is he would consider a slasher.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: So I would not consider that a slasher.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: No, that's more of a grindhouse kind of just brutal horror film, straight horror.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: Um, I think that, and I I said this to you, and I'm gonna say it on on on the record here.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: Never has a decade been dominated by a subgenre like the 80s were dominated by slashers.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: And it's all because of And it's all because of Halloween.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: It absolutely is.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Like I said, this is why we got Friday the 13th.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: It's because of Halloween in the record from that.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: And so many others.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so many others that we've talked about.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, Clumber Party Massacre, dude, um you know, just there's so many movies that came out.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: Why do we love Halloween so much, though?
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: It it's such a simple film.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: There's nothing to it, but for some reason we love it.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: It's so simple, and I think I've said this on the podcast.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: I showed it to my daughter and she thought boring.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: Born, right.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: I can't with this generation of kids, I could definitely see that too.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Um it wasn't the first final girl.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: It wasn't the first, you know, psychopath killer going nuts, but yeah, there's just something about it that's the perfect blend of ingredients.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna ask you a question with an honest answer.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Is Halloween as huge as it is without that score?
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: Definitely not.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: Nowhere near?
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: I don't know about nowhere near.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: If we just got a generic.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: It takes it to the next level.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: It takes a good movie and makes it great.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: The Jaws, the, you know, it's kind of yeah, that makes that.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: We talked about that on our soundtrack, dude.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we we uh we've covered a lot of ground on this podcast.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: We have.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: We should.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: It's all about work.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: But no, I mean this I um what else can we say about Halloween that everyone knows?
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we don't really need to.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: And everyone's seen it.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a landmark film, not just in horror, but I think in film history.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: They had lightning in a ball to do something about that mask and that silhouette of Michael and just the whole atmosphere.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: It really captures Halloween, dude.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: Well, awesome.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: That I got one more.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: I got one more.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: What do you think I picked?
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: If it you've seen it, we've talked about it.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: It's Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2, Freddie's Revenge.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: The gayest of all is it though?
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what they say.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: I know, but okay.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: No, it's not really.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Uh I think that they say that be and I and I don't mean that in a derogatory way in the least, but they say that you can Google and see that they say that.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: Um I think they say it because the lead actor is gay.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: And I think because there's those um kind of like SM bartender scenes and the gym teacher.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: Uh I think that's why it gets that.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: That ran over my head as a kid.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: I did not pick up on that as a kid.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: I didn't even pick on it, pick up on it as an adult until the internet came around and I read somebody talking about it.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: Do you think it was intentional that they were trying to, or just people were like, nope, it is because of this.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: I did see when we did our Friday 13th episode, and I think I talked about it.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Yes, sorry.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: I think when I when we did our nightmare on Elm Street episode, I think I did talk about this.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: The director was pushing in that direction.
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: And apparently um the actor had not come out as gay publicly, and he was pushing back against it.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: So he was constantly trying to play everything as straight as he could, and the director was constantly trying to push him to play things more ambiguous and more uh alternative, I guess.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: Is the well there is that scene in the bedroom where he does the whole solo singing with the hairbrush, yeah.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: Right, exactly.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: Jesse's his name in that, and he's uh he's awesome in it.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: He's a great he feels very conflicted.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: I feel bad for the kid, dude.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: Freddie comes out of him.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: If you're going to do a nightmare on Elm Street film without Nancy, he did a great job.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Fidal Boy.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: We don't get a lot of those, do we?
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: Exactly, exactly.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh yeah, that's what they say about it.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: But no, I it's a good movie.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Now it's followed up by three bangers.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: You know, you get into the dream trilogy, starting with part three.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: Three you can't beat.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: It's I think that part two is maybe underrated and overshadowed.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: Because of that.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: Because of of how good a one was and because of how good the next three were.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like the forgotten little piece of lettuce in the Of the sandwich.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: I like the story though.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: How Freddie's coming through with this kid.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: It's fantastic.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: No, I got nothing bad to say about it.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: I got nothing bad to say about it.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: I never once watched it and was like, this is a bad nightmare movie.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: Not once.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: No.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: No.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: Good kills, Freddie's awesome.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, Robert England's awesome.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: Always awesome was pretty good.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: I yeah.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: All good.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: All good with this movie.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: I I always remember as a kid that pool party where he comes out, you know, and they're all that's one of my favorite sequences of Freddy in any of the Friday 13th movies is the pool party.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's fantastic.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Very 80s, isn't it?
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: 80s.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: That's like a if you're gonna have an 80s movie, you had to have a pool party scene.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: This one had Freddie.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: So even better.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: 100 times better.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: Even better.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: Hundred times better.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: Well, that's my list, brother.
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: Alright, well, I got one left.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: And this thing is an absolute banger of a film, and it's invasion of the body snatches.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Oh nice.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: Man.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: Watching Reeves.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: Um Christopher Reeves?
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: That's Superman.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, he's in it though.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: No, I'm thinking of um What's the horror movie he's in with the kids?
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Golly, that's what I was thinking of.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: Christopher Reeves?
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure what you're talking about.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: Oh man, now you got me tripping.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: Who's in this?
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: Uh Donald Sutherland.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm gonna find out what Fanny is in.
- 45:32unknown: Okay.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: Well, let's bring it back to Saturday.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: Actually, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a remake of the 50s Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: But this one is so much more.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is straight horror.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Um, yes, but I mean Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the 50s version, is based on a book, and it's very typical um thing from outer space kind of movie that you would have gone and seen at the drive-in.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: And the 78 version is like we are going to make a legit, like, best movie we can make kind of a thing.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: And this movie is so good.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, I watched it tons of times as a kid.
- 46:27SPEAKER_00: This was one of my dad's favorites.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: I've seen it once.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: You need to watch it now.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: Um, my dad used to watch this movie a lot.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: What is it that he loved about it?
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: So I watched it a lot as a kid.
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: But watching it this week, this thing is a masterpiece.
- 46:43SPEAKER_00: This is Hitchcock level.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: Storytelling?
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: Just filmmaking in general.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: Everything about this movie from A to Z is on that Hitchcock level.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: It reminded me of Vertigo or the Birds or Psycho.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: That's high praise, man.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: I am telling you, if you haven't seen this recently or if you've never seen it, 1978, a vision of the body snatchers, um, Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams, who you would know from The Dead Zone a few years later.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: Um, this movie is fantastic.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: What's his character?
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: Donald or uh Donald Sutherland.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: Well he's like, what's the character's name?
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: No, no, like who what what is he in the movie?
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: Because I'm trying to Okay, you're trying to jog your memory of this.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, so basically he's uh he works for the it takes place in San Francisco.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: Um he works for the health department, and he uh Brooke Adams character is like his research assistant.
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: And uh she gets the ball rolling when her husband gets replaced by one of the body snatchers.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: Okay she picks this flower and takes it home and puts it in a vase next to the bed, and of course the flower is the is the pod, the beginnings of the pod.
- 48:16SPEAKER_00: And uh while they're asleep, the pod replicates him.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: So the next morning she wakes up and she's like, This is not the guy I went to bed with.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: Like she just knows.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: She just knows inheritance.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: This isn't my husband.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: This isn't this is not my husband.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: What happens to the husband, the real husband?
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: You don't remember?
- 48:36SPEAKER_00: No, I don't remember anything about that.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: Don't give me too much because I'm gonna watch it tonight.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, good.
- 48:41SPEAKER_00: I mean it.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: No, good.
- 48:43SPEAKER_00: Um basically when the pods replace you, they funnel most of what exists of you into kind of their first meal that gives them the energy to like get up and so you're done, is what we're saying.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: There's basically just like kind of an ashy husk left of you after the pod replaces you.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: And um there's two things that again I didn't really pick up on as a as a kid.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: Um he is the her husband, very beginning of the movie, when he wakes up in the morning, she wakes up, he's already up and dressed, and he's like sweeping something on the floor.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: And it's him or the husband.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you kind of think like I think as a kid I thought like um he knocked over the flower pot that had the flour on it.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: And that's what he's cleaning.
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: That's what I kind of thought.
- 49:42SPEAKER_00: But no.
- 49:43SPEAKER_00: No, he's sweeping other leftovers, right?
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: And then he goes, he takes it right out to the garbage truck, which is like waiting at the curb for him.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: And it's uh and the yeah, so if you watch, like every other scene, there's a garbage truck in the background.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: And it's one of them, it's someone who's been.
- 50:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and every time the garbage truck like closes, like this ashy dust comes out of it and stuff.
- 50:11SPEAKER_00: So one of the first things it it this is my uh inference.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: One of the first things the pods did was replicate garbage men for that reason to have a you know a way to now.
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: I can never trust you.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: I can never trust you.
- 50:29SPEAKER_00: No.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: Um so anyway, she comes to him and she's like, Something is something's off about my husband.
- 50:40SPEAKER_00: And then um he starts to notice it, and this is a very paranoid movie.
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: This is a very evocative movie.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: Um is that where you're going with that hitchcock?
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: Yes, and this movie builds dread.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: I love it like no other.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is a sheer building up of you know those uncomfortable feelings.
- 51:05SPEAKER_00: And Dr.
- 51:05SPEAKER_01: Sutherland, I feel like he would play something like that top notch.
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's so, so good, I'm telling you.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: Uh, like I said, I've seen it probably a dozen times.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: It's one of your dad's favorites?
- 51:16SPEAKER_00: This was one of my dad's favorite movies.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: But watching it this week for the first time in I don't know how many years, I was blown away.
- 51:25SPEAKER_01: How good it is.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go okay.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: This is a this is a gym.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: Hidden gym.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: This it's not hidden, it's just hidden to me?
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, I guess so.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: But I mean, like this Maybe Halloween overshadowed it in 1978, huh?
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: Probably, probably.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: But any time that you're talking about just the upper echelons of horror films, this needs to be in the conversation.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is so good.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: But so, yeah, so uh Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, and Veronica Cartwright's in it as well, and the first ever movie appearance of Jeff Goldblum.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 52:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's another thing because as a little kid, I didn't know who Jeff Goldblum was.
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: Like my earliest memory of Jeff Goldblum is the fly.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: Fly, both of us.
- 52:14SPEAKER_00: However, I saw Jeff Goldblum in Invasion of the Body Snatchers and I had no idea.
- 52:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so the four main characters are Sutherland, uh Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, who later that same year started Alien, and Jeff Goldblum.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: They're the pretty good cast.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: They're the top four on the bill.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: Um, so the four of them have to slowly unravel the mystery of Spoonlers.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: There's they're slowly unraveling the mystery of what happened to everybody.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: And would it doesn't take place in a small town?
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: You said San Francisco.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: So it's a huge city.
- 52:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, big city.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: I like the small town stuff.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: The movie I was thinking about with Christopher Reed's Village of the Dam with the blonde-headed kids and all the creepy kids.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know why I was thinking that.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: So my mistake.
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: I hope it's good.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you it is.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: You're not gonna call it-I hope Paul's telling me it's great.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: You're not gonna call me and be like, Well, I'm gonna call you tonight after I watch it.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: But you're not gonna call me and go like, I don't agree.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: What were you smoking?
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, you're gonna call me and be like, dang.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: This is a I gotta watch again a yearly cutting.
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: This is a heavyweight.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: Well, I can't wait to watch it.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: This is an absolute heavyweight.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm glad we did this list for that reason.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: And I want you to check out Phenomenon.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's definitely uh, you know I love Gialla.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's it.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: It's been on my list for a long time.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: And it's just one that I haven't made time for, and now I certainly will.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: It's on Tubi.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: Perfect.
- 53:43SPEAKER_00: Perfect.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: Where can I watch Invasion?
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: Shutter?
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: What did I watch it on?
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: Uh I think I watched it on YouTube.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: I might rent it if I have to, if it's if it's that good.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: I think I watched it on YouTube.
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: I think it's, you know, some of these movies as they get older.
- 54:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's where I watched the 1986 The Itcher two weeks ago YouTube at the full film.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: But um, I mean, this should be readily available.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: You shouldn't have any problems finding this.
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: And they have they remade this one?
- 54:16SPEAKER_00: They did, yeah.
- 54:17SPEAKER_00: There's three different versions of this movie.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: So I need the 1978 though.
- 54:20SPEAKER_00: 1978 is far and away the best version.
- 54:24SPEAKER_00: Um it's I'll be the judge of it.
- 54:27SPEAKER_00: Oh man, it's so good.
- 54:28SPEAKER_00: I can't wait.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: So you had an idea for what we're gonna talk about next week.
- 54:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what we're gonna do.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: The um what was that?
- 54:41SPEAKER_00: We are going to talk about when horror movies take it too far.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: When when do they take it too far?
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: Is that a bad thing?
- 54:51SPEAKER_00: Well, I spit on your grave might be one of those movies where you could say they took it too far.
- 54:55SPEAKER_01: I've got a couple of mine on them.
- 54:56SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that that's what we want to talk about.
- 54:58SPEAKER_00: And uh uh when do they cross the line?
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: Are we gonna try to see like you're gonna match my movie kind of thing?
- 55:06SPEAKER_00: No, I'm just gonna find the ones that really push the boundary disturbed me and bothered me.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: There's plenty out there.
- 55:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, there's plenty of them.
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: And and I'm not gonna go on your grave, absolutely.
- 55:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm not gonna say that um taking it too far is a bad thing.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: I don't think so.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean there are movies where I've There's a gory to be gory, it you know what I mean?
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: I if you watch horror movies like we do, I'm sure you will agree with this sentiment, which is sometimes you're watching and you're like, I don't like that.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: They didn't need to go there.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you're watching and you're like, I can't believe they went there and I love it.
- 55:46SPEAKER_01: And sometimes you're going, I wish they can go.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: Why aren't they going there?
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: And you know what comes to mind when I think of that?
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: Psycho killer.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:54SPEAKER_01: Perfect example of they should have gone more board.
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, we're gonna talk about when when horror crosses the line, when it takes it too far.
- 56:05SPEAKER_00: Takes it too far.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: Ramping up for Halloween guys.
- 56:07SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 56:07SPEAKER_00: Halloween movies every night, yes, get in the mood.
- 56:10SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 56:11SPEAKER_00: If only it would stop being 100 degrees, I would actually put some decorations out.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: Do dude anyway.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: I'll help you.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: No, I have no excuses, guys.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: I want to see skeleton ghosts everywhere.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: I've been having fun.
- 56:26SPEAKER_00: All right, y'all.
- 56:27SPEAKER_00: Uh come back next week and thanks for listening.
- 56:29SPEAKER_00: Be safe.
