Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Nick Bewley: Newstalk ZB Canterbury Sports Commentator on Christchurch City Council's efforts to get a NRL team
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Prospective of South Island an NRAL team looking better than ever.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Apparently the christ Church Council is backing Sir Graham Low's
- 0:05Speaker 1: Southern Orcers bid. Council has met with the NRAL and
- 0:08Speaker 1: outlined a commercial plan and there's a razor twist. Nick
- 0:11Speaker 1: Buley News Talks HEB Canterbury Sports commentated with us this morning. Neck,
- 0:15Speaker 1: good morning, good moright. All right, so starting to look promising,
- 0:18Speaker 1: is it?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Certainly the wheels in motion.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Look the council we're doing its due diligence and new
- 0:25Speaker 3: documentation that has been reported this morning from newstalks hy
- 0:29Speaker 3: B showing you know, conversations started a couple of years ago.
- 0:32Speaker 2: They're starting to ramp up.
- 0:33Speaker 3: And the warriors were in town in christ Church in
- 0:36Speaker 3: June and NRAL officials who hear, Council officials who hear
- 0:39Speaker 3: there's no exact request for proposal around a twentieth license
- 0:43Speaker 3: to enter the NRL just yet, but they're getting all
- 0:46Speaker 3: their ducks in ur and they really need to you
- 0:48Speaker 3: know that the NRL timeline and an ideal world is
- 0:51Speaker 3: that a club would be stood up, the Southern Orcas
- 0:54Speaker 3: or whoever it's going to be here in christ Church
- 0:56Speaker 3: would be stood up by twenty twenty nine, you know,
- 0:58Speaker 3: we're talking half years away, and that there's a lot
- 1:01Speaker 3: to do, including obviously the report yesterday and MS hiring
- 1:04Speaker 3: a coach and finding players and sponsors and getting members
- 1:08Speaker 3: and hiring.
- 1:09Speaker 2: All sorts of stuff.
- 1:10Speaker 3: So look, it's encouraging signs for people down here in
- 1:14Speaker 3: the South who you know, want to have an NRL.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Team here, But it's there's certainly a lot to do.
- 1:21Speaker 1: The razor thing. Is that a headline grabber or is
- 1:23Speaker 1: that a serious.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Pitch for me? Anyway? Ryan, it's the headline grabber.
- 1:29Speaker 3: But look, I've observed Scott Robertson and the Crusaders environments.
- 1:33Speaker 3: He is more these days, well, certainly at that point
- 1:35Speaker 3: in time what you'd call a culture coach. He's not
- 1:38Speaker 3: necessarily the ones doing the hard graft On field. That's
- 1:42Speaker 3: what he gets some experienced assistant coaches in and around
- 1:45Speaker 3: to do. And I suppose that's the pitch from Sir
- 1:48Speaker 3: Graham Low and Andrew Chalmers at the Southern Orcas, you know,
- 1:51Speaker 3: come in, be that that guy that can provide a
- 1:54Speaker 3: winning culture. He certainly did that at the Crusaders. And
- 1:56Speaker 3: then we'll wrap around experience in and around him. Personally,
- 2:00Speaker 3: think it's a little bit bold for someone with zero
- 2:03Speaker 3: rugby league experience given the cut and thrust of NRL,
- 2:08Speaker 3: one of the toughest domestic competitions in Australasian sport. But
- 2:13Speaker 3: it certainly would grab attention as it did yesterday and
- 2:16Speaker 3: the fact we are talking about it right.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Now, hey very quickly. Is the council looking at putting
- 2:20Speaker 1: rate payer money into this or we don't know yet.
- 2:23Speaker 2: We don't know yet, and that's the fascinating thing for me. Ryan.
- 2:25Speaker 3: There'll be I mean, I'm a rugby league not through
- 2:27Speaker 3: and through, but there'll be certain people out there that
- 2:29Speaker 3: are going to tell the council to stick to what
- 2:31Speaker 3: they know in terms of the water and rubbish and
- 2:34Speaker 3: all that sort of stuff is getting into bed with
- 2:37Speaker 3: rugby league really considered a top priority when we're supposed
- 2:40Speaker 3: to be curbing rate rises.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So that'll be one to watch.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Indeed, Nick Buley News Talks, there'd be Cannibury Sports
- 2:45Speaker 1: Commentated with.
