- 1:57means. We're loaded up stuff with stuff. Today we get Hannah Gardner from
- 2:00the Charleston Canal Charleston Main Association with this week's about Me please pet of the
- 2:05week. We get to her in a couple of moments, a big event
- 2:07to help out a local fire department to talk about, and former Delica Josh
- 2:10Higginbotham's going to be here to join us talking about that. Plus Rick Caviner
- 2:14on tomorrow's The October West is going on with the Charleston main Streets and we're
- 2:19gonna talk to Rick Caviner about that coming up a little bit later on.
- 2:21Plus my guest host this week, my former boss, Speedy Babans. Good
- 2:25morning, sir, Good morning. Still heavily medicated from those twenty years,
- 2:30but not as much medication as what it has what it has been. We're
- 2:34gonna get to Speedy a little bit later on because she'd recognize his voice from
- 2:37the state basketball tournaments, and he's gonna talk about his career in the world
- 2:40of radio, what he's doing these days. Plus he gets to play ten
- 2:43questions too. Ten questions, you get ten questions. I have the answers
- 2:47for ten, maybe six or seven, but not. I'm also going to
- 2:51preview the high school football game I broadcasting tonight. You're not broadcasting the game
- 2:54though, Yeah, but this guy is Chris Lawrence. How you doing,
- 2:59man, You know where I'm lifted pickup truck would be a redundancy. It's
- 3:04exactly right. When you said that, I thought you have to point out
- 3:07that it's lifted. What kind of truck are you talking? Come on,
- 3:08we're gonag it old church. Chris Lawrence is here to talk about high school
- 3:12full But Chris, if you met Speedy, do you know speed? Yeah?
- 3:14In fact, I feel like it's nineteen ninety three and I'm sitting in
- 3:15the w VOW studios. Just what I feel like right now. Somebody commented
- 3:20when I posted on social media about Speedy be and here's somebody actually commented and
- 3:23said, it's like nineteen ninety five all over again. Somebody listened to Speedy
- 3:29and myself on the air. But I want to talk about the game.
- 3:30You and Jared Lewis. You're headed to Parkersburg tonight, tr Yeah, We're
- 3:34going to Parker's Bird for the George Washington Patriots taken on the big reds of
- 3:38Parker's Burg. A big test for GW tonight. But they have been through
- 3:42the ringer because they have probably played the most difficult schedule of anybody, at
- 3:46least in the MSAC. Because they have hit all the heavy hitters right up
- 3:51front, so they they and they came through it with a record of two
- 3:55and three. If they could get the wind to night on the road,
- 3:58man, that would really put them in a great position going into the postseason.
- 4:01We've not had the opportunity to do it George Washington game yet this year,
- 4:05so I'm looking forward to that. It'll be the first one on the
- 4:08air. But we'll be on the air on five a WCHS tonight at seven
- 4:12and the Kicks Office at seven thirty. And if you can't hear us on
- 4:15the radio, or if you're at the game and want to listen, you
- 4:16can download the WCHS app and it's at the app store end. You can
- 4:21check out the game there. Now we're at the halfway point of the season,
- 4:25I guess right. Week six, Yeah, with five and six is
- 4:28kind of the halfway points. So yeah, we're there. And this is
- 4:30the time when I mean, it's always time to get serious, but this
- 4:32is the time when teams start taking, you know, stock of where they
- 4:35are and looking looking towards the end of the season. Well, you're trying
- 4:39to keep people healthy, so you start to separate the week from the chaff
- 4:42here as far as you know, who's who's got a contender and who's a
- 4:46pretender. I mean, some are just playing out the string, and then
- 4:47others are battling for position to get a good seed in the postseason and possibly
- 4:54garner a home game or full home game status all the way to Wheeling.
- 4:57So have you done a game from stadium field? I've never been there.
- 5:00Oh my gosh. The three is a historic place. It's got to be
- 5:03over one hundred years old, but still very well kept. I'm told that
- 5:10the parking is at a premium. Parking is at a premium. I don't
- 5:15know if this has changed, but when Bob Wiser and I used to go
- 5:17up there with Logan, the locker rooms were in the high school field house,
- 5:24and like it was a track at halftime, guys are worn out the
- 5:28time they get it's halftime. Let's go down to the locker room, which
- 5:31was about another one hundred yard march, and then you would come back up.
- 5:35I've been the only place that I've seen that or that scenario is at
- 5:39Spring Valley, where at halftime the team has to walk up a hill that's
- 5:45at least two or three hundred yards to the top of the hill to the
- 5:47field house. You know, Parkersburg had Cabel Midland on the ropes twice they
- 5:51did last week, had an inside to five yard line on two different visions,
- 5:56and yeah, Cabel Midland kept them out of the end zone. That
- 5:58is going to be a very nice matchup. That was seven to three at
- 6:01the half. Of course, Cabl Midland, as you said, stopped them
- 6:04twice inside the five. But then in the third quarter Midland just explode with
- 6:10three straight touchdowns and within like two minutes it went from seven to three to
- 6:14twenty eight to three. And the rest of the game was played pretty evenly
- 6:17according to coach Matt Comes, but those two or three minutes were lethal to
- 6:21Parkersburg. All right, that's a flashback for me. I remember when Mat
- 6:26quarterback for Buddy James up there. I do too when when I interviewed him
- 6:30yesterday, I was thinking to myself, I have been here long enough to
- 6:32have seen players that are now coaching A Yeah, exactly exactly, says the
- 6:39guy that's a couple of years younger than New York talk about Westerndinia outdoors tomorrow,
- 6:43what you got We're gonna be discussing what the food sources will be for
- 6:46wildlife this fall. The DNR put out its mass survey. In fact,
- 6:49it came out today, so we will have a full conversation about that tomorrow
- 6:55on the show, and of course after the game. Then you said cover
- 6:57charts at seven. It does for tonight, I mean, and then after
- 7:00the game, stick around for Fred and Dave with the game night and you're
- 7:03back tomorrow with West Virginia out Doors at seven o six. Chris appreciate it.
- 7:06By the way, Magic Night guitar Murphy will not be with us tonight.
- 7:10We'll have a celebrity sideline speed No, I said, a celebrity side
- 7:15someone who knows what they're doing. Tom Brag. Okay, Tom's awesome man.
- 7:19Yeah, Tom. Tom will do a great job. Was my color
- 7:21man last year when we were in transition and I needed a guy, so
- 7:26he filled in this year. So he wasn't doing anything this weekend and I
- 7:30ask himf people to do it and he said, be glad too. So
- 7:30looking forward to having on the on the road trip with Aaron Andrews was not
- 7:33available, Well, have you seen me and have you seen Aaron Andrews?
- 7:39Those two are not going to go in the same team and their silver restraining
- 7:42order. Just keep that in mind. So Chris, I appreciate it.
- 7:45Man. We'll be listening tonight in tomorrow morning. Thanks y'all. Don't have

- 8:16Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charleston Main Association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet
- 8:20of the Week. Hannah, Good morning, How are you. I'm good?
- 8:24How are you? I am doing fine? Thank you for being here
- 8:26and Happy Friday. Happy Friday. And my guest co host this morning is
- 8:31is Speedy Babbitt's my former boss. I don't have to call me boss anymore.
- 8:35Do you ever ever work with any of your former boss's, Hannah?
- 8:37I know you're not as old as I am, but you ever worked in
- 8:39any former bosses? Sometimes? Yeah? Okay, all right, Well,
- 8:43hopefully your relationship is better than what mine is with him. Okay, let's
- 8:48get to the story of Marky. Marky's picture posted on Dave Allen Radio and
- 8:52Facebook and at day A seventy on x the artist formerly known as Twitter,
- 8:56Hannah tell us about Marky. Yeah, so, Markie is the cutest guy.
- 9:03If you go look at the picture that he posted. He looks like
- 9:05he's got some like wrinklies on his forehead and stuff. He's even got the
- 9:09cutest little airplane ears to stick out to the sides like a tan caller.
- 9:16I don't know what he would be mixed with, but he's mixed with something
- 9:18that has some roles because he's got a little bit of wrinkles on his forehead.
- 9:22But anyways, he is about one year old. He is six already
- 9:28and microchips and vaccinated, so he is ready to go home. He prefers
- 9:35playful dog, so he actually likes dogs that are more playful, more outgoing
- 9:39ones that are going to play with him, that he can kind of exercise
- 9:43out his energies. He would be considered like a good weekend adventures Like if
- 9:50he wanted to go on weekend trip or something, he would probably be a
- 9:52good one for that. He definitely has some energy, so encouraging enrichment things
- 9:58like taking him on walks and big yards and stuff like that. He has
- 10:03seemed to be kids friendly from what we've noticed, but of course we always
- 10:09advise caution, never leave them unattended, especially if they're around a kid.
- 10:13Just to be a hundred percent shirts, but he is a very very sweet
- 10:18boy. He only pulls on a leash a little bit from what I've heard.
- 10:20I've not gotten to walk him myself yet, but he's a very very
- 10:24all around good boy and he just needs a good home. Hey, Hannah
- 10:28Sweedie Bavins. Here just a couple of observations on market number one. You
- 10:33don't know what he's mixed with, but I'm a yellow Lab guy from a
- 10:37long time back, and it looks like his color is a little bit reflective
- 10:43of a yellow lab. Inning that is true. You know, he does
- 10:46look like he could have some of that. I just don't know. I
- 10:52can't think of all the dogs that have like the wrinkly skins and stuff.
- 10:56But oh my gosh, he's cute. He is. And the other thing
- 10:58I noticed, there's a p sure that Dave posted on his social media accounts
- 11:03and Marky is situated between two other dogs. Marky just looks so happy,
- 11:09like I'm hanging out with my brothers here. I mean, so any dog
- 11:13that can just stand there and have a great pose with other dogs around him
- 11:18gotta be a great guy. Yes, yes, he is a very very
- 11:22sweet boy. And he also is about just to kind of give you an
- 11:24idea, he's about fifty six fifty seven pounds, so he's an average sized
- 11:31dog. He's a good looking dog for sure. Marky's the dog's name again.
- 11:33Pictures posted on my social media sides, Handy, you guys are getting
- 11:37ready for another Bissell Pet Foundation Empty the Shelter's Adoption event. Now, this
- 11:41is this is a huge nationwide event that folks of Bissell do. Three hundred
- 11:46and forty five shelters in forty two states taking part. Most animals and I
- 11:50understand, thanks to Bissell are fifty dollars or less. That includes the microchipping
- 11:56and the vaccine plus being spade or neuterant. And I understand it start tomorrow,
- 12:01which is the beginning of October. What a great event this is and
- 12:03hats off to the folks Abissel for making it happen. Yes, yes,
- 12:07we love Bissel. We love having the event. I believe there's three or
- 12:11four times that we have it in a year, so we're very very thankful
- 12:15for that. And it's typically at our shelter. It's typically twenty five dollars
- 12:20adoption fees. We typically don't really do the fifty, but we do stick
- 12:24with the twenty five. But I'm sure we will post about that tomorrow morning
- 12:30as well, So just keep an eye on our Facebook and we'll have all
- 12:33that information on there. And you had some animals, some dogs that just
- 12:35went out to Michigan. Is that right? Yeah, so we actually had
- 12:39quite a few dogs go on a flight out to Michigan. It was a
- 12:43rescue that pulled them, not for any specific reason other than you know,
- 12:48we were just really full and they were offering the help. That's great.
- 12:50So, yeah, that is amazing. Dogs don't care where they are as
- 12:54long as they have a dogs or cats, long as they have a good
- 12:56home and good people, they don't really care where they are. Great story
- 12:58about that, Hannah. In today's Charleston Cassette. It's front page story had
- 13:01a real nice photo with it, and it's it's something that's a very nice
- 13:07read. Yes, yes, I agree, and we're very very thankful to
- 13:11the rescue who helped us in all of that, and the transporters who helped
- 13:13us as well. Hannah, do you have any outreach going on this weekend?
- 13:16I know you guys are sometimes on weekends out at about different places.
- 13:20Anything going on this weekend? Nothing to my knowledge, I don't think we
- 13:24have anything planned for this weekend. I think we're just getting ready for business
- 13:26tomorrow. All right, Hannah. I appreciate you as always, Dear,
- 13:30we'll talk to you next week. Thanks a lot, Thank you very much.
- 13:33And a gardener with our Adopt me Please. Pet of the Week from
- 13:35the Canal Charlestony Main Association again, it's Markie Speedy. He's around one year
- 13:41old, newtered vaccinated microchip. She calls him a social butterfly. I loved
- 13:46him with the funky bunch. You know, it's such a good vibrate.
- 13:48It was a good vibration that brought in as a stray. Very very sweet
- 13:54boy needs a yard. I he's one years old and you know he's around
- 13:58fifty five fifty six pounds or so. He's gonna need a little room to
- 14:01run. But it looks like a fantastic dog from someone who had taken end
- 14:03strays over the course of my life. They never forget. Absolutely, they
- 14:09love you forever. I agree and again, go to the shelters. Get
- 14:15them, however you have to get them, but to do not go to

- 20:44And she's actually the public information officer for the Fire Department and now the
- 20:48secretary of the board and then as well as a member of course. And
- 20:52so I'm now on the Red Light Committee, which handles fundraising and events and
- 20:56stuff. So is this like a newer event? Have you done this in
- 20:59the past two years? Ago, we did a seventieth anniversary celebration and we
- 21:03kicked off the day. We did a lot of the same things with hot
- 21:07dogs and a five k and a parade. So we just decided that we
- 21:11wanted to do We'll do it again at seventy five, but to kick off
- 21:14Fire Prevention Week. Tyler Mountain was actually founded on October eighth, which kicks
- 21:18off fire Prevention Week, so we're doing like I said, we're doing it
- 21:22on the seventh of October. But it's just a community awareness. We really
- 21:26just want to have the community know that we're there for them. They can
- 21:29also go online and sign up for free smoke alarms. I actually I am
- 21:33charing the smoke alarm installations so they would get to see my shining, smiling
- 21:36face show up in a pickup truck with lights on it, you know,
- 21:40one of our Tyler Mountain apparatus, and then go and can install smoke alarms
- 21:44or a carbon monoxide detector for free. Transitioning to my new career as an
- 21:48insurance agent, and you talk about fire prevention, plug, plug plug,
- 21:53We're going to get more in. It's also a good time. Whoever your
- 22:00insurance agent is, get that homeowner's insurance policy. Call your insurance agent and
- 22:06just say, am I covered enough? Because you probably took that homeowner's policy
- 22:11out fifteen twenty years ago at the dwelling protection you had then nowhere close to
- 22:18building you back today? Right? And but but if you have those smoke
- 22:23alarms with working batteries, and are the ones we instar good for ten years?
- 22:27So you would I mean, and that may even I'm just going to
- 22:30say, get you a discount on your homeowner's policy. What do you think
- 22:33speeding? I think it absolutely would, absolutely, And the importance of smoke
- 22:37alarms. I mean, you see you pick up the paper and you hear
- 22:41us talking about on the air, how many of the fires that we have
- 22:42in the air no working smoke alarms or people thought they were working because they
- 22:45were hanging on the wall. They've been hanging there since the Carter administration.
- 22:49You haven't done anything, you know, to them, since they don't the
- 22:52batteries don't change themselves. You know, you got to do that from time
- 22:55to time. So let's talk about this event again. And where can people
- 22:57learn more? You got Can you find some information on social media or website?
- 23:00Where you got Yeah, I've shared some things on my social media and
- 23:04my Facebook and Twitter or x I guess yeah. And so the Tyler Mountain
- 23:10Fire Department page on social media also has a pretty big following. You can
- 23:14get the link on there and then t m VFD dot com dot dot org,
- 23:21it's dot com. You can register there for the event, and of
- 23:23course walk ins are welcome to sign up. Thankfully, Dutch Miller Automotive Group
- 23:30is one of the sponsors. Helped us get some T shirts and so people
- 23:33don't have to necessarily preregister. We can send them a T shirt. And
- 23:37then of course the hot dog sail and parade not at all going on there
- 23:41next weekend. Josh, you're gonna be back next Friday is the guest host
- 23:44on the show, so you'll get a couple more plugs in for it then
- 23:45as well. Absolutely, man, what a good marketer you are. You
- 23:48know how to plan this, don't you. You said on Friday, I'll
- 23:51come in and talk with Jamie, and the next week I'll come back his
- 23:53guest host, and he knows what he's doing. He's a national marketer.
- 23:57Jamie, go ahead, that's absolutely Why do you think I recruited him to
- 24:00be on the red Light. We've known each other for years, and he
- 24:03is a mover and a shaker he is indeed. All right, Jamie,
- 24:06very nice to meet you, and I agree with what Speedy said. You
- 24:08have an incredible voice, so stick around. Maybe we'll let you host the
- 24:11show too. Maybe you'll just let you have my job. How's that well,
- 24:14I'd be glad to come back and help post. All right, Jamie,
- 24:17I appreciate you better. Josh. Always a pleasure, my friend.
- 24:18We'll talk to you next week. Thanks a lot, best of luck with
- 24:22your best of luck with everything that's going on with you there. Five Vity
- 24:25Lives brought to you part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds.
- 24:27Hey, you're invited to come check out the Down a Dirty Music Festival
- 24:30Gildmar Ballpark October the fourteenth and the fifteenth. Par ticketson for more information to
- 24:34visit Down and Dirty Musical Festival dot com and get down to Dirty Musical Festival
- 24:38dot com. Let's go to our good friend Rick Cavner now from Charleston Main
- 24:42Streets. Rick is here, Rick, Good morning, It's October West time.
- 24:47Hard to believe October's here, Buddy, I know good morning day.
- 24:51How are you all this morning. I am doing fine, Thank you for
- 24:53being here. My guest host is Speedy Bavins that he's roaming around here at
- 24:57somewhere. He'll be back here just a little bit. What do you got
- 25:00going on tomorrow? Well, yeah, tomorrow is excuse me, Tomorrow is
- 25:04our fifteenth annual October West Celebration right in the heart of the West Side in
- 25:11the Oak City District. This event has grown from a very small sort of
- 25:17German themed October Fest festival in two thousand and nine and here we are in
- 25:21twenty twenty three, and it's one of the largest live music and crappier festivals
- 25:26in the state of West Virginia. And the weather fantastic, man for you.
- 25:30I mean there's and you know, there's so many things going on the
- 25:32area tomorrow. I know, the folks in Barbersville, I'll get their fall
- 25:34festival going on, Polkas got some things going on tomorrow. But no matter
- 25:38what you're doing tomorrow, try to take them all in because the weather's going
- 25:41to be absolutely picture Brothers, this homecoming from a Marshall thunder here tomorrow as
- 25:45well. So you've bet a part of this for how long since the beginning?
- 25:48Well, no not, we've of course, our organizations merged in twenty
- 25:53fifteen, whenever I started getting involved. But the the the event itself formerly
- 26:00stood by what was West Side Main Street, started in two thousand and nine.
- 26:03So so yeah, it's it's you know. Of course, in May
- 26:07we have our big East end event called Phone with the Dome or you're very
- 26:10familiar with it. In late September we have October west on the West Side.
- 26:15So I mean just in this event, you know, this is a
- 26:17this is a fundraiser for our organization. Obviously, all the funds raised through
- 26:21sponsorships and ticket sales go right back into our the operations of our organizations,
- 26:25so we can we can implement items in our work plan to make the West
- 26:29Side of Charleston at the Business District stronger. And but it's also a great
- 26:34opportunity to showcase the businesses there. All the businesses get involved in one way
- 26:37or another, and it's also a great opportunity to to sort of create that
- 26:42residual effect and open new eyes to to so many to people that have maybe
- 26:47have not ever been to a business on the West Side. So it's been
- 26:51it's been a huge success. We usually see between two thousand and twenty three
- 26:55hundred people attend this event, usually from at least it depends on the year,
- 26:59but the average about fifteen different states. And yeah, it's it's grown
- 27:03into a into a huge attraction for the entire region. And I mean to
- 27:07have all of this good on in the west side of Charleston. Again,
- 27:11just because it's on the west side doesn't mean that, as you said,
- 27:12you got it. How many states are representing? How many states are you
- 27:15expecting? There's really no way of knowing, but I mean on average,
- 27:18Yeah, we look at our tickets all data. We've had both from fifteen
- 27:22different states registered for tickets over the last at least since we started using our
- 27:26software, which was in twenty sixteen. So you know, Joe, I'm
- 27:30sorry, Josh Spitty Bevan's guest hosting today. For those of you who have
- 27:34not been on the West Side, I have dropped considerable amounts of money at
- 27:41a barbecue place there. Yeah, is it two brothers that would be I
- 27:47mean, you talk about anchor, you know, anytime you talk retail or
- 27:51anything, you talk about anchor stores. That is an anchor right there,
- 27:56Yo, Yeah, and the owners of that place are wonderful community members and
- 28:02leaders and they're involved with that organization and they've done great work. Now they've
- 28:06expanded to downtown and we're really really proud of them, so, you know,
- 28:10and that's sort of that's a good example of a locally owned business who
- 28:14gets directly involved with their community and offers it a wonderful product and people come
- 28:18back for more on a weekly or maybe daily basis, And that's one reason
- 28:22we host this event is to shine a spotlight on those businesses. And Rick,
- 28:26now you're going to come back on Monday, and I don't want to
- 28:30spoil the surprise, but you I don't even know what it is, but
- 28:32you say you've got a big announcement to make on Monday, So you're gonna
- 28:34be actually back on the show on Monday. I'm looking forward to finding out
- 28:37what is because I don't know what it is. Yeah, we're actually making
- 28:41the announcement on stage during October West Tomorroway. But but I have a lot
- 28:47to update you on and to talk about regarding that annoucement on Monday, So
- 28:51I'm excited to come back and talk about that. All right, Rick,
- 28:52give us the details again, what times everything start tomorrow. The event goes
- 28:56from four pm to nine pm. It's right there on Washington Street West,
- 29:02in between Pennsylvania Avenue and Maryland excuse me, Indiana Avenue in the Elk City
- 29:07district of the West Side. We have an entertainment zone. We have we
- 29:11have a VIP level tickets that you can purchase. We have a special VIP

- 29:32get your tickets now for a little bit cheaper than if you buy them at
- 29:34the gate. If you go to CWV Main Streets dot org, go to
- 29:38our website. It's the very first thing you see whenever you go to the
- 29:41home page is the October West page. You can buy your tickets there,
- 29:45but you can also buy them as they're five dollars more expensive. No matter
- 29:48what level you buy or the VIP general admission or the basin intor driver ticket

- 34:01Bevans is my guest host today on this NonStop thrill ride that we call Friday
- 34:06Funhouse Speedie. You know, give us the bio on Speedy Bevans. Now,
- 34:09in addition, you know, I always throw out that you were my
- 34:12boss for a number of years at w VW or Radio in Logan. Bit,
- 34:15but just give us the other than other than being my boss, give
- 34:20us the bio, Speedy Bevans. I'm a guy who just couldn't get anyone
- 34:23to hire. I mean, seriously, I have only been able to find
- 34:29two companies in my life that would give me a job. Yeah, to
- 34:35two companies in your entire life. That's one being Logan Broadcasting Corporation, the
- 34:39parent company of w VW and the current company that you have, and we're
- 34:43going to talk about that a little bit later on. You know, Speedy,
- 34:46I love asking radio and television people this, what was it that made
- 34:51you want to say? And you can tie that kind of tie us into
- 34:52your bio. What made you say I want to do this for a living.
- 34:59The background of how I got interested in broadcasting was I have a brother
- 35:05that's four years older than I am, and you know him well yea.
- 35:07And so when he's like twelve and you're eight, and you're choosing up sides
- 35:13to play whiffleball or whatever if there are enough to play, you didn't get
- 35:17chosen to play. And so there were many times I did not get chosen
- 35:22to play. So to just amuse myself, I would go grab a stick
- 35:28and I would just go sit over on the side and I would broadcast their
- 35:31whiffleball game. I'm like eight years old. Yeah, I did the same
- 35:35thing. I can relate, okay, And so from there it was just
- 35:38kind of like, okay, this, this seems like a fun thing to
- 35:42go. Always wanted to be a game show host more than a sportscaster,
- 35:45more than anything. Anderie Anderson, Me and Ernie g Anderson. He got
- 35:50it with high Q. Still waiting on my big break. But I just
- 35:52I just grew up in the sixties watching game shows and that's what you wanted
- 35:59to do. And that was a big influence in me and broadcast. There
- 36:01were some of your radio or television idols growing up. Who did you look
- 36:06it and say, I'd like to do I'd like to be that guy.
- 36:07I don't know if you remember a guy. He was just an iconic game
- 36:09show host, Bill Cullin. I do remember Bill. Bill Cullin, I
- 36:14think hosted every game show that there could be hosted. Was he married to
- 36:17Betty White at one point? Now? That was Alan Luddon that was Jeff
- 36:23Okay, okay, we need to go in and correct Wikipedia. Yeah.
- 36:28Sorry. Alan Ludden was the host of Password. Okay, all right,
- 36:31So Bill Cullin. Yeah, and so Bill Cullin hosted all kinds of Okay
- 36:35Jose Alan Ludden was another one. Uh, and of course let's make a
- 36:39deal. No, don't don't do door number two. You know they're gonna
- 36:44get burned. There were just all kinds of great game shows on You don't
- 36:49say was one Concentration later and that was hosted by Hugh Downs that you remember
- 36:53on twenty twenty and at the time we were in ABC affiliated. I was
- 36:59up in Your York. I went over to ABC as I always did,
- 37:02and Hugh Downs walked in really and I just thought, and I just said,
- 37:07hey, I just want to tell you. You know, I used
- 37:09to watch you on Concentration and I think he was shocked at anybody remember Concentration,
- 37:15right, yeah, and your love of sports. You know, I
- 37:19bless you, by the way for remaining a loyal Browns fan all these years.
- 37:22But you're also a big time Cardinals fan. And I know the reason.
- 37:25I know the reason why you follow the Cards. But tell listeners,
- 37:29what made you a Cardinals fan. My dad made me a Cardinals fan.
- 37:32And my dad grew up in Belfrey, Kentucky, which is right across the
- 37:37river from Williamson. And in the late nineteen thirties, every small town in
- 37:42America I had a minor league baseball team, and so the Williamson Redbirds they
- 37:46were a Class D team, which is, you know, about as low
- 37:50as you can get in professional baseball. They brought in a left handed pitcher
- 37:57from Dadnorah Pennsylvania by the name of Stam Usual and he really wasn't that good
- 38:04a pitcher, but he could also play the outfield on days when he wasn't
- 38:07pitching. And we all know how that went. Stam Usual was actually in
- 38:12Williamson for two years. You think about one of the iconic baseball players of
- 38:17all time, couldn't get out of Class D for two years. But when
- 38:22he got out, he got out. He did some stuff, Yes he
- 38:25did. And you know, funny, funny story on that. To Noora,
- 38:30Pennsylvania is also the hometown of Ken Griffy's senior. And you know,
- 38:36in my time of vow we were Reds affiliate. Went to a lot of
- 38:38Red's events and met Ken Griffy senior and I said, you know, I
- 38:43was at the first game you played for the Reds in August of seventy three.
- 38:46I was about to start my freshman You're at Marshall. He kind of
- 38:50looked at me and he said, senior in high school, I got an
- 38:55offer to go to Marshall to play baseball. Me and my best friend couldn't
- 39:00decide whether to go to the Reds or go to Marshall. My best friend
- 39:04went to Marshall to play baseball. I went with the Reds. Really yeah,
- 39:07wow, what a story. Let me tell you else. I don't
- 39:09know if you're aware of this. We're really getting an off drave here a
- 39:13guy that was at Marshall for one year played baseball, wasn't really that good,
- 39:17but was in the broadcasting course. Billy Christ Jildy Crystal. Yeah,
- 39:21A lot of people don't know that I did being a Marshall guy as you
- 39:23are. I know that. So let's talk about your time at w VW.
- 39:27You know, most people can't will say to me, They say,
- 39:30you know, I can't believe that you stayed in one place that long.
- 39:31It was twenty years during the morning show there. That's a long time in
- 39:36radio. It's a long time to be in one job, period, But
- 39:37at one time in one job for twenty years on radio televisions almost unheard of.
- 39:43You started though at w VW Radio and Logan as a as a teenager,
- 39:47and you left as a general manager. How many years were you there?
- 39:52I was there starting in the fall of nineteen seventy two. Next month
- 39:54will be fifty three fifty one that I started there and I left and at
- 40:04the end of November twenty fifteen. So that was do the math. That
- 40:09was like forty three years, forty three years, forty three years, and
- 40:15then I mean, that's that's amazing to me. Forty You spent forty three
- 40:20years and then to transition into doing something totally different after forty three years at
- 40:24one place, that's I mean, that's that takes a lot of intestinal fortitude.
- 40:29It really either intestinal fortitude or desperation. I got, I got a
- 40:35couple of texts I want to get to, and then I want to continue
- 40:37on with Speedy. Bevin says Texas Dave. Great to hear Speedy on the
- 40:42program this morning. He has a lot of historical knowledge. Thanks. That's
- 40:45the way of saying year old. That's the way I'm saying I'm old.
- 40:49Yeah. Tech says you need to have Speedy lists all the Triple A boys
- 40:52state basketball champions in order from the last forty years. Okay, so the
- 40:58last forty years would be nineteen eighty two or nineteen eighty three, eighty three,
- 41:02Okay, so we'll start in eighty two, Okay, okay. Uh.
- 41:07Stonewall Jackson wanted on the last second shot the field of South Charleston nineteen
- 41:12eighty three, the Logan Wildcats nineteen eighty four, the Oak Hill Red Devils
- 41:15nineteen eighty five. It would be Stonewall Jackson nineteen eighty six. It would
- 41:21be Stonewall Jackson nineteen eighty seven, Huntington, how about doing you don't mean
- 41:27I'm sorry? Nineteen eighty seven. Was Charleston. Nineteen ninety seven was Charleston,
- 41:30Greg Dennis and Mark Mason who's coaching the football program? Okay there now?
- 41:35Nineteen eighty eight was Huntington nineteen eighty nine, was Martinsburg. Nineteen ninety
- 41:39was Woodrow Wilson. Nineteen ninety one was Logan you want me to continue?
- 41:44I think you proved your point by the way that text came in. That
- 41:46was a personal text that came from our former co worker and employee, Zach
- 41:51Anderson, who's listening to us today. Yeah, that was that came from
