Varda puts three capsules in orbit to test space-based drug production
Three capsules from Varda Space Industries are orbiting Earth, roughly 300 miles above the planet. One is growing tiny crystals of a potential cancer drug in microgravity. The other two are testing heat-protection materials and navigation systems for re-entry. Varda launched two capsules on October 1 and a third on October 20, bringing its total in orbit at the same time to a record three. The company aims to build a fleet of orbital pharmaceutical factories. Varda says frequent experiments could help drug development, though the capsules need to demonstrate reliable results repeatedly.
