- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Thursday, it's the 19th of March, and it's so good to have
- 0:18your company as we continue reading through this phenomenal
- 0:22story that Mark has written for us.
- 0:25And I was chatting with one of my boys and he said, so tell me
- 0:28about the genre of gospel. Where did that word come from?
- 0:32And what other examples are there of gospels?
- 0:35And do you know, friends, the word gospel, the whole genre of
- 0:38gospel was invented specifically for these four books, Matthew,
- 0:42Mark, Luke, and John, because there is nothing else in all of
- 0:46the literary world which is anything like these.
- 0:49These are the stories of the Son of God who changes the face of
- 0:54humanity forever through his life, his death and his
- 0:58resurrection. So it is so exciting.
- 1:00So let us just dive in. This is such a massive chapter
- 1:04with so many incredible hard hitting stories.
- 1:07Let's just dive straight into it.
- 1:09I'm excited. Holy Spirit, open us up.
- 1:11Reveal yourself afresh to us today.
- 1:16All right, friends, let's do it. Let's read together Mark Chapter
- 1:196. Jesus left that part of the
- 1:31country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his
- 1:34hometown. The next Sabbath, he began
- 1:37teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
- 1:41They asked, where did he get all this wisdom and the power to
- 1:45perform such miracles? Then they scoffed.
- 1:48He's just a Carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of
- 1:52James, Joseph, Judas and Simon and his sisters live right here
- 1:56among us. They were deeply offended and
- 1:59refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them a prophet
- 2:04is honoured everywhere except in his hometown and among his
- 2:08relatives and his own family. And because of their unbelief,
- 2:12he couldn't do any miracles among them except to place his
- 2:15hands on a few sick people and heal them.
- 2:18And he was amazed at their unbelief.
- 2:21Then Jesus went from village to village teaching the people, and
- 2:25he called his 12 disciples together and began sending them
- 2:28out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evil
- 2:32spirits. He told them to take nothing for
- 2:35their journey except a walking stick.
- 2:38No food, no traveller's bag, no money.
- 2:41He allowed them to wear sandals, but not to take a change of
- 2:44clothes. Wherever you go, he said, stay
- 2:48in the same house until you leave town.
- 2:50But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you,
- 2:54shake its dust from your feet as you leave, to show that you have
- 2:58abandoned those people to their fate.
- 3:01So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to
- 3:04repent of their sins and turn to God.
- 3:07And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people,
- 3:11anointing them with olive oil. Herod Antipus the king soon
- 3:16heard about Jesus because everyone was talking about him.
- 3:19Some were saying this must be John the Baptist, raised from
- 3:23the dead, that is why he can do such miracles.
- 3:26Others said he's the prophet Elijah.
- 3:29Still others said he's a prophet like the other great prophets of
- 3:33the past. When Herod heard about Jesus, he
- 3:36said John, the man I beheaded, has come back from the dead.
- 3:42For Herod had sent soldiers to arrest and imprisoned John as a
- 3:46favoured to Herodias. She had been his brother
- 3:49Philip's wife, but Herod had married her.
- 3:52John had been telling Herod, It is against God's law for you to
- 3:55marry your brother's wife. So Herodias bore a grudge
- 3:58against John and wanted to kill him, but without Herod's
- 4:01approval. She was powerless.
- 4:03For Herod respected John, and knowing that he was a good and
- 4:07holy man, he protected him. Herod was greatly disturbed
- 4:11whenever he talked with John, but Even so, he liked to listen
- 4:14to him. Herodias's chance finally came
- 4:18on Herod's birthday. He gave a party for his high
- 4:21government officials, army officers, and the leading
- 4:24citizens of Galilee. Then his daughter, also named
- 4:27Herodias, came in and performed a dance that greatly pleased
- 4:32Herod and his guests. Ask me for anything you like,
- 4:36the king said to the girl, and I will give it to you.
- 4:39He even vowed, I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my
- 4:43Kingdom. She went out and asked her
- 4:45mother What should I ask for? Her mother told her, ask for the
- 4:50head of John the Baptist. So the girl hurried back to the
- 4:54king and told him, I want the head of John the Baptist right
- 4:59now on a tray. Then the King deeply regretted
- 5:02what he had said, but because of the vows he had made in front of
- 5:06his guests, he couldn't refuse her.
- 5:08So he immediately sent an executioner to the prison to cut
- 5:12off John's head and bring it to him.
- 5:15The soldier beheaded John in the prison, brought his head on a
- 5:18tray and gave it to the girl, who took it to her mother.
- 5:22When John's disciples heard what had happened, they came to get
- 5:26his body and buried it in a tomb.
- 5:30The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and
- 5:33told him all they had done and taught.
- 5:35Then Jesus said, Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and
- 5:40rest awhile. He said this because there were
- 5:42so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles
- 5:46didn't even have time to eat. So they left by boat for a quiet
- 5:51place where they could be alone. But many people recognised them
- 5:54and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along
- 5:58the shore and got there ahead of them.
- 6:01Jesus saw a huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he
- 6:05had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a
- 6:09shepherd. So he began teaching them many
- 6:12things. Late in the afternoon, his
- 6:14disciples came to him and said, this is a remote place and it's
- 6:18already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can
- 6:21go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to
- 6:24eat. But Jesus replied, you feed them
- 6:29with what they asked. We'd have to work for months to
- 6:32earn enough money to buy food for all these people.
- 6:35How much bread do you have? He asked.
- 6:37Go and find out. They came back and reported we
- 6:41have 5 loaves of bread and two fishes.
- 6:44Then Jesus told the disciples to help the people sit down in
- 6:47groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of 50
- 6:52or 100. Jesus took the five loaves and
- 6:55two fish, looked up toward heaven and blessed them.
- 6:59Then breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread
- 7:03to his disciples so they could distribute it to the people.
- 7:06He also divided the fish for everyone to share.
- 7:09They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward the
- 7:13disciples picked up 12 baskets of leftover bread and fish.
- 7:17A total of 5000 men and their families were fed.
- 7:22Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that the disciples get
- 7:25back into the boat and head across the lake to Bethsaida
- 7:30while he sent the people home. After telling everyone goodbye,
- 7:34he went up into the hills by himself to pray.
- 7:38Late that night, the disciples were in the boat in the middle
- 7:41of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land.
- 7:44He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and
- 7:47struggling against the wind and waves.
- 7:50About 3:00 in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the
- 7:55water. He intended to go past them, but
- 7:58when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror,
- 8:01thinking he was a ghost. They were all terrified when
- 8:04they saw him, but Jesus spoke to them at once.
- 8:07Don't be afraid, he said. Take courage, I am here.
- 8:12And he climbed into the boat and the winds stopped.
- 8:16They were totally amazed, for they still didn't understand the
- 8:20significance of the miracle of the loaves.
- 8:22Their hearts were too hard to take it in.
- 8:25After they'd crossed the lake, they landed at Ganasserate.
- 8:29They brought the boat to shore and climbed out.
- 8:32The people recognised Jesus at once, and they ran throughout
- 8:36the whole area, carrying sick people on mats to wherever they
- 8:39heard he was, wherever he went, in villages, cities or the
- 8:44countryside, they brought the sick out to the marketplaces.
- 8:48They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his
- 8:51robe, and all who touched him were healed.
- 9:05Jesus, as I read this, I'm just so struck by the fact that you
- 9:10were tirelessly giving, and when you were tired and needed rest,
- 9:15your compassion drove you to keep on loving Jesus.
- 9:20Your heart for us is so big. Not interested in your own
- 9:24needs? You came down giving up your
- 9:27divinity and glory to take on this broken human form, and then
- 9:33through your life, this ceaseless service of others, and
- 9:37then ultimately you gave up everything on that cross for us.
- 9:42You are the God and we ought to be serving you, but here you are
- 9:46serving us. It is a paradox that eternity
- 9:50would not be long enough to ponder, and so we just accept
- 9:53it. We just say thank you.
- 9:56Thank You that against all rational reason and logic, you
- 10:00love us and you serve us. And Lord, I pray that our hearts
- 10:05would just be overflowing with what you have given to us.
- 10:10So the only response we can do is to serve You and each other.
- 10:15You are the greatest and we love You.
- 10:17And we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
