- 0:00Aloha. Friday morning. Tropical Storm Lala arrives this weekend — the biggest weather system of the season.
- 1:44Through today, scattered showers on windward areas and mountains, with winds picking up to locally strong by this afternoon. Fire danger is elevated due to dry air and strong winds, but humidity will climb as the storm approaches. Tonight into Saturday, conditions deteriorate fast. The Big Island is under a Hurricane Warning; Maui County is under a Tropical Storm Watch. Avoid outdoor activities from Friday evening through Sunday.
- 2:06Surf is ramping up. Oʻahu south shore running 5.8 feet and the north shore at 5.1 feet — moderate conditions with shore break and rip currents. Kauaʻi is also moderate at 5.8 feet. Maui and the Big Island are smaller today, but that changes overnight. By Saturday through Sunday, dangerous surf of 15 feet or higher will hit east-facing shores. Swim today if you're going in the water.
- 2:25Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is closing temporarily for storm safety. Kīlauea remains at Advisory level. Park alerts are in place for volcanic ash; check conditions before you travel to the Big Island.
- 2:35If you're on the Big Island this weekend, our recent post on Kīlauea's latest episode walks through what the pause means. Episode 53 ended early Wednesday morning after 9.6 hours of fountaining activity. The eruption details are worth understanding if you're planning Big Island time in the coming weeks.
- 2:51The focus this weekend is Lala. Eight to twelve inches of rain expected on the Big Island and parts of Maui, with isolated windward Big Island areas potentially hitting over 20 inches. Flash flooding and stream rise are likely Saturday through Sunday.
- 3:03Full storm coverage is on the site. Talk to you tomorrow.
