- 0:00Speaker 1: We are back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Mike chris Pino, joined by Kamana Young, the associate head
- 0:07Speaker 1: coach of the Huskies, and Kamani When you're smiling, I'm
- 0:11Speaker 1: smiling and you had a nice smile on your face
- 0:13Speaker 1: coming back from Texas. Let's talk about that first, going
- 0:18Speaker 1: on the road in a building that was what a
- 0:20Speaker 1: gorgeous place and a rockus crowd. I thought the Huskies performed,
- 0:24Speaker 1: you know, up to the standards that you guys have
- 0:27Speaker 1: established here in the last couple of years.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, that was a big one for us.
- 0:32Speaker 3: You could just tell a tone of our program from
- 0:34Speaker 3: the players, throughout our you know, throughout coaching staff.
- 0:37Speaker 2: We really wanted that one.
- 0:38Speaker 3: So it was great to see how guys come out
- 0:42Speaker 3: and really control the game from start to finish.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And that is the key, is it? Not on the road?
- 0:47Speaker 1: I mean, if you let the home team go off
- 0:50Speaker 1: and you know, get a nineteen to eight lead that
- 0:53Speaker 1: was what you led by, that's tough because then you
- 0:55Speaker 1: got to climb up a mountain. It seems a lot bigger,
- 0:58Speaker 1: doesn't it.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Absolutely, I mean that was one of the keys going
- 1:01Speaker 3: into the game. That you know, we didn't want to
- 1:03Speaker 3: allow their home court to become a factor. Don't let
- 1:06Speaker 3: the crowd get involved, you know, just establish the rules
- 1:10Speaker 3: of the game. I thought from you know, from the tip,
- 1:12Speaker 3: we were physical, we were tough, we executed on offense,
- 1:15Speaker 3: and you know, never really let them get it get
- 1:19Speaker 3: in it.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And I thought Yukon's passing game, which has been so
- 1:23Speaker 1: good over the last couple of years. High assist numbers
- 1:27Speaker 1: usually low turnover numbers, not in this game particularly, but
- 1:30Speaker 1: that passing game. You know, as a as a player,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and I think as a teammate of another guy, whoever
- 1:38Speaker 1: it may be, getting you the ball in places where
- 1:41Speaker 1: you can score. That's a good feeling, isn't it for
- 1:43Speaker 1: any player?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:44Speaker 3: Absolutely, I mean that's always a great sign for us.
- 1:48Speaker 3: When we got high assist numbers. I want to say
- 1:50Speaker 3: we finished with twenty one assists for the game. Anytime
- 1:53Speaker 3: we're you know, we're at twenty or more assists, we
- 1:56Speaker 3: feel like we're in a great place offensively. And passing
- 1:59Speaker 3: is contagious, you know, passing is contagious when you got
- 2:02Speaker 3: you know, your best player is willing to give.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Up a good shot for a great shot, you.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Know, when older players are willing to share with younger players,
- 2:12Speaker 3: and the way Hassan played, he obviously set the tone
- 2:15Speaker 3: for us from a you know, from a sharing a
- 2:18Speaker 3: ball standpoint, which was awesome to see.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah. And Samson Johnson I think really benefited from it
- 2:24Speaker 1: a lot because he's a great you know, diver to
- 2:27Speaker 1: the basket, cutter, alley oop guy when he's getting involved
- 2:31Speaker 1: like that, and he went, you know, went for double
- 2:33Speaker 1: figures in the game. Uh, that always seems like it
- 2:36Speaker 1: kind of tips the scales a little bit for the Huskies.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, you know, Sam depends on.
- 2:44Speaker 3: You know, guard play and unselfishness to have success around
- 2:48Speaker 3: the basket, so as well as Alex and Liam and
- 2:52Speaker 3: Solo guys like that on the perimeter. So it's important
- 2:55Speaker 3: for us to share the ball. It's always important for
- 2:58Speaker 3: us to allow the defense to take where the ball goes.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And when you got open looks, you just got to
- 3:03Speaker 3: shoot them with confidence and knock them in and coach.
- 3:06Speaker 1: The three point line obviously huge in college basketball. Uh
- 3:10Speaker 1: these days. You went nine for twenty in that game,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and that's important. Obviously you're you're trying to make some
- 3:17Speaker 1: stuff happen. But I mean how important is that when
- 3:23Speaker 1: you get good passing, good ball movement, and you get
- 3:26Speaker 1: guys with three point shots.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, we got a lot of weapons
- 3:30Speaker 3: on the perimeter. I mean, we got we got some
- 3:32Speaker 3: guys that can really that could really light it up,
- 3:34Speaker 3: you know, when Alex gets it going and Liam gets
- 3:36Speaker 3: it going and solo, you know, and even Jay Ross
- 3:39Speaker 3: off the bench, I mean he can make shots. You know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: we're a dangerous team and I think a lot of
- 3:45Speaker 3: teams try to take that away from us. But you know,
- 3:49Speaker 3: we just got to play play the right way, play smart.
- 3:51Speaker 3: You know, we always talk to our guys about allowing
- 3:54Speaker 3: the allowing the defense to dictate where the ball goes.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You know, if you throughout the course of game, you
- 4:00Speaker 3: see a team is really trying to take away the paint,
- 4:02Speaker 3: and we got to get in there and land and
- 4:03Speaker 3: relocate and get the ball of open shooters and vice versa.
- 4:08Speaker 3: You know, when teams are trying to take away to
- 4:10Speaker 3: three point line, we got attack paint and looked for
- 4:12Speaker 3: our rollers and look to drive close out. So yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 3: it's that balance that we've got to find over at
- 4:19Speaker 3: our best.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it adds up. It all adds up obviously, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: going out to Maui and having two close losses and
- 4:27Speaker 1: then a loss of Dayton three and three days. I
- 4:31Speaker 1: mean the team not used to that. The guys who've
- 4:34Speaker 1: been around not used to that. But who does that
- 4:36Speaker 1: affect more? Do you think you're guys that are you know,
- 4:39Speaker 1: guys like Caravan and Johnson and dr they all have rings,
- 4:42Speaker 1: they've been to the top of the mountain, but some
- 4:44Speaker 1: of the other guys they haven't, right, so all of
- 4:47Speaker 1: a sudden they're in a place where things aren't working
- 4:49Speaker 1: out well in your mind? What what what group gets
- 4:53Speaker 1: affected more by when things don't go well.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I think we were all affected, Mike.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I mean it was you know, it kind of got
- 5:01Speaker 3: knocked us back on our heels a little bit. You know,
- 5:03Speaker 3: we lost three games all the last year, so to
- 5:07Speaker 3: lose three games in three days, I don't think any
- 5:09Speaker 3: of us were prepared for that, So I.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Think it affected us all.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I think, you know, we we just had to had
- 5:17Speaker 3: to understand, like this is a new team. We got
- 5:21Speaker 3: some young players that are that are grown into bigger roles.
- 5:25Speaker 3: We have some returning players that have grown into bigger roles,
- 5:29Speaker 3: and I think it was important for all of us
- 5:31Speaker 3: to understand that that none of us are entitled to win.
- 5:34Speaker 2: You know, none of us are entitled to it.
- 5:36Speaker 3: So we earned winning, you know, by by you know,
- 5:40Speaker 3: how we prepare and then ultimately how we go out
- 5:43Speaker 3: there on the court and perform. And you know, we
- 5:45Speaker 3: just didn't have it and we didn't have enough time
- 5:47Speaker 3: to regroup.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I think for us, you know, practice is important, preparations
- 5:52Speaker 3: is important, being able to correct mistakes, and watching film
- 5:56Speaker 3: with our guys is extremely important in terms of the
- 5:59Speaker 3: way we do things here, and we just didn't have
- 6:01Speaker 3: that there.
- 6:03Speaker 2: You know, it's part of it.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But I think that you know, towards the middle and
- 6:08Speaker 3: end of the season, we'll be able to look at
- 6:09Speaker 3: that as a blessing because we learned a lot about
- 6:12Speaker 3: our team.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And the other thing I think Dan earlier is mentioning
- 6:16Speaker 1: this you're not entitled. I know, you got the two
- 6:19Speaker 1: rings of fabulous accomplishments these last two years. You couldn't
- 6:22Speaker 1: ask for much more. But just because you could throw
- 6:25Speaker 1: the Yukon gearon, that doesn't mean you go out and
- 6:28Speaker 1: you're gonna win. And plus the other guys want to
- 6:30Speaker 1: beat you. Pretty bad.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 6:33Speaker 3: I mean we've been dealing with that since we got here.
- 6:35Speaker 3: That that's nothing new. But you know, Coach even said
- 6:38Speaker 3: to the guys, there's no magic dust. You know, there's
- 6:41Speaker 3: no magic dust that we have here. You know, the
- 6:45Speaker 3: magic the magic dust is in the players, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 3: and the people and the commitment level and you know,
- 6:52Speaker 3: being able to get out there and perform at a
- 6:54Speaker 3: high level. You know, So that that was just a lesson.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I think that maybe some of us felt like just
- 7:01Speaker 3: because we got the jerseys on and what we've been
- 7:03Speaker 3: able to do over the last two years are just
- 7:05Speaker 3: going to carry carry us through Maui.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And it didn't.
- 7:08Speaker 3: And you know, young players learned a lot from it,
- 7:11Speaker 3: got valuable experience. You know, we saw some things that
- 7:14Speaker 3: we really got to hone in on in terms of
- 7:17Speaker 3: where we need to improve, especially defensively, and we also
- 7:20Speaker 3: saw some things that we can build on, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 3: in terms of having two formidable centers and and you know,
- 7:27Speaker 3: young young guys like Solo really really ready to take
- 7:30Speaker 3: a big step and even guys like Jamie Ross and
- 7:34Speaker 3: Jalen Stewart ready to you know, to contribute in a
- 7:37Speaker 3: big way. Get more contributions from Aiden Mahoney and Taris Reid.
- 7:41Speaker 3: So you know, I thought a mod did some really
- 7:44Speaker 3: good things out there in the Colorado game that he
- 7:46Speaker 3: can build on and put hisself in a position to
- 7:50Speaker 3: help us as a freshman.
- 7:51Speaker 2: So yeah, it was. It was. It was brutal to
- 7:54Speaker 2: go through, but but we learned from it.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah, sometimes losing is the best I don't know education,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I don't know why it just came up with that
- 8:01Speaker 1: right now. I don't know if that's really true. It hurts,
- 8:04Speaker 1: but sometimes when it hurts, it can benefit you. We're
- 8:08Speaker 1: with Kamani Jung, the associate head coach of the Yukon Huskies.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Take a quick break. We'll be back in a moment
- 8:13Speaker 1: on Learfield
