- 0:00So, did you just go to the game?
- 0:03Or were you on holiday?
- 0:04On Saturday.
- 0:05Some of us were working.
- 0:07The Crystal Palace game?
- 0:08Yeah, I was commentating on it.
- 0:10Some of us were on TV working on real jobs.
- 0:14Ozzy was doing his real job as well.
- 0:15I was there commentating on the game.
- 0:18Well, you know, Ozzy was just enjoying himself as always.
- 0:22I am fortunate, Tony.
- 0:23You're a bit grumpy this morning, aren't you?
- 0:26I can see it.
- 0:26I can hear your voice.
- 0:27I can see it.
- 0:29I was doing my day job at the ground.
- 0:33It was a good one to do.
- 0:36Great to be in the stadium.
- 0:37It felt good to be back, to be honest.
- 0:39I know we've had the World Cup, and everyone's got a bit excited about that over the summer, but there's just something a bit different about Premier League football.
- 0:47And then when you're seeing your own team playing and starting well, winning the game, it's good.
- 0:52It's nice winning on opening day of the season, isn't it?
- 0:56I can't really remember the last time we've done that.
- 1:01Well, obviously going into the game doing the stats, we'd lost the last four opening Premier League games and hadn't scored a goal in any of them.
- 1:10Wow.
- 1:11So, it was a refreshing change, wasn't it?
- 1:14Yeah, when you say it like that, you just don't realise it all.
- 1:19You don't realise the misery Everton can put on you at times.
- 1:23Because I was so, so...
- 1:26Looking forward to it, even though it wasn't going to be there, and I knew it wasn't going to be there when the Boxing Dates got announced.
- 1:31I just, I was so looking forward to it and then to just, yeah.
- 1:36But we got the job done.
- 1:38Colt, yeah, because Colt sat with Corey, didn't he, in your seats?
- 1:41Fantastic, yeah.
- 1:42He was buzzing with himself.
- 1:44Yeah, of course he was, absolutely.
- 1:45He doesn't get the corporate from me anymore, he gets it from you.
- 1:48Not me, son.
- 1:49There's nothing corporate about me, I love you, no.
- 1:53Go and ask Uncle Toadie, he'll sort you.
- 1:56They're for the clients then.
- 1:58It was a good game.
- 1:59As I say, I didn't think...
- 2:08I thought we were quite fortunate not to be behind our half-tap.
- 2:11I mean, Jorah Pickford makes probably the save of the season on the opening day.
- 2:16First half of the opening day, it was...
- 2:17It picked up exactly where he left off.
- 2:20I mean, so important for us.
- 2:22Anyone who sort of...
- 2:24I can't believe he still has people that...
- 2:26don't appreciate how good he is.
- 2:28And the cheap and easy thing to say is, if he was a top-class keeper in one of the big clubs who'd come and got him, or either got to one of the big clubs, maybe he doesn't want to.
- 2:39Maybe he's happy where he is.
- 2:40Maybe he's OK playing for the team he loves, and he's very settled.
- 2:46And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 2:47And he performs absolutely brilliantly for us.
- 2:52I mean, he typically scuffed a kick into his own centre-half, ten minutes after he saved the season.
- 2:59But that's Jordan Breyer.
- 3:00They saved us all that matters.
- 3:02Yeah.
- 3:03Yeah, so I mean, we could have been behind, we rode our luck and if we'd have gone behind opening day of the season and then the crowd would have gone a little bit tense and I don't think we'd have helped the team from that moment.
- 3:15But it was good to turn it around, good to get the opening goal and yeah, deserved the win, I thought.
- 3:22What would you put that opening 20 minutes down to?
- 3:25A bit of opening nerves for first game of the season?
- 3:29Any other ideas?
- 3:30Yeah.
- 3:33No, I don't think we started badly as such.
- 3:36We weren't given passes away.
- 3:38We actually played okay in possession of the ball and tried to create a few chances.
- 3:42But we were too easy to play through, we were too open.
- 3:45They were able to, especially Adam Wharton, he's got some passes, he just fires them into great positions.
- 3:55Yeah, he was picking out some really good passes and cutting through us and cutting us open.
- 4:00So it was just a case of, yeah, go and enjoy yourself.
- 4:03This is what I think the half-time talk would have been.
- 4:05Continue to play well on the ball, continue to advance forward.
- 4:08But it's not a kid's under-12s game.
- 4:11Make sure we're doing it from a good position and we're doing it from a good shape.
- 4:17And from that moment, I thought, I don't know whether Crystal Palace...
- 4:22disappointingly didn't turn up or we were dominant in the second half but it was it was it wasn't a contest in that second half.
- 4:31Out of the outfield players who were you impressed by?
- 4:33I was impressed by a lot.
- 4:36I thought Merlin Roll playing right back did very well.
- 4:42I think he was positionally in
- 4:44in bad positions a couple of times in the first half.
- 4:49And I think that's partly because he doesn't know the position and Tarkey was probably not bullying him as such, but he was allowing him to come and help him do Tarkey's job rather than Tarkey saying, stay away.
- 5:03Roel saying, I can't come and help you, I need to go do me.
- 5:05He just kept getting dragged into his centre half a bit too much.
- 5:09But other than that, I thought he did great.
- 5:12I thought Hayden Hackney was outstanding on his debut.
- 5:16Harrison Armstrong is impactful.
- 5:18He gets around, he makes tackles.
- 5:20He made a brilliant defensive tackle after about 10 minutes on the halfway line.
- 5:24He made a great tackle to set up the opening goal.
- 5:27And he continues to do that.
- 5:28He does have sloppiness in him.
- 5:29He gave the ball away cheaply a few times, which I'm sure he'll be working on and improving.
- 5:34But yeah, I was impressed with the majority of them.
- 5:38I saw that you obviously went to the ground.
- 5:39So the top five picks for man of the match were up on the big screen.
- 5:47Basically pick.
- 5:48You could have picked Pickford, Illiman, Dewsbury Hall, Armstrong,
- 5:55Roll, Merlin Roll.
- 5:57And when I was in the media afterwards, I was like, bloody hell, Snodds.
- 6:01Bumped into Snodds.
- 6:02I can't believe Hayden Hackney wasn't in the vote.
- 6:04I was voted for Hackney.
- 6:05He went, no, no, you're wrong.
- 6:07I went, who picks them five people up there?
- 6:09They haven't got a clue what they're talking about.
- 6:11Snodds went, it were me.
- 6:12It were me.
- 6:13I picked them.
- 6:14I was like, that sums it up.
- 6:16Bloody hell, we had a good argument.
- 6:19And to be fair, he defended his picks and gave me a reason why each one of them were on the board basically to choose from.
- 6:28But it just shows that I had a different opinion from him.
- 6:32I'm sure everybody in the stadium had different opinions about who they thought was man of the match.
- 6:37I mean, Tony, who did you think was man of the match?
- 6:40I think it was Keenan Juzvio.
- 6:42I just think that goal sets the tempo.
- 6:45I just think it's a really good goal.
- 6:47It gets us ahead.
- 6:49And as you said before earlier, in them first 20 minutes you could be two down.
- 6:53And it just needs a little bit of a special moment to get us going.
- 6:57And it was a really, really good goal.
- 7:00I was impressed and really happy for Harrison Armstrong.
- 7:02I know you touched upon those a few little bits there that he's going to need to rush up on.
- 7:06The Premier League is so unforgiving that you lose the ball in certain situations.
- 7:11He will punish you and it will happen to you really quick.
- 7:15But yeah, I'm really happy to see him playing because that kid just needs minutes and I think he will flourish.
- 7:23I really do.
- 7:24So I'm just happy.
- 7:25You know, Hayden Hackney looks like a brilliant acquisition.
- 7:30Keenan Dewsbury Hall is just phenomenal.
- 7:32I said to his death before the season's coming on, they're going to have big seasons.
- 7:35I think Jimmy Garner and Keenan Dewsbury Hall will be pivotal this season.
- 7:40I think just in...
- 7:42in the context of keeping the ball, creating chances, goals, and you know TNL Barry's the best striker in the world at the minute.
- 7:51Yeah, let's move on to him.
- 7:54Where's that come from?
- 7:56It's been coming.
- 7:58Four goals in two games.
- 8:00Absolutely fly.
- 8:02And where's all the people now saying we need a new striker?
- 8:05He's brilliant.
- 8:08Sorry, our cars have been going to me.
- 8:09Dad, he's the most informed striker in the world.
- 8:14And I said, son, listen, just stop quieting down.
- 8:18Don't let the other side hear what you're talking about.
- 8:20Just let's get to Christmas, son, and let's just see if he's still firing them in.
- 8:24And I said, no, dad, everyone's got to know now.
- 8:27He's the best striker in the world right now.
- 8:29And this is what a toxic little 13-year-old Neutronians can get like once they start.
- 8:37Look, we can't... For a team that...
- 8:41Still think overall we'd love to have a top-class centre-forward.
- 8:48All he can do is try and go out there and show it.
- 8:50He wasn't up to what we needed last season.
- 8:53On him, he's got to prove to the manager, to his own teammates, to us, that he's a striker that can take the team forward.
- 9:02Now, yeah, he couldn't have started better in sense of goals.
- 9:06Obviously, a hat-trick against Preston.
- 9:09And being positive in terms of,
- 9:12Do you know what I mean?
- 9:12His performances were decent.
- 9:14He's scored them goals in two games.
- 9:17And I'm really looking forward to seeing a confident Tierno Barry moving forward, having scored these goals, because confidence is everything.
- 9:23He should be able to sort of dig into that and use that confidence moving forward.
- 9:32The slight negative is, and it's not negative, it's the flip side of me, saying...
- 9:38Well, it was only against Preston, and they're not that good, and he should be performing against them.
- 9:42You'd hope he's performing against them, but he still has to go out and do it.
- 9:46And then his goal against Crystal Palace at the weekend, I think that was goal-wide, if it didn't hit the defender on the back of the head.
- 9:55You burst the balloon there, Oz.
- 9:57I'm not going to lie, I don't care.
- 9:59There are circumstances, but yeah, I'm hoping it takes him forward.
- 10:06I mean, he got the assist for Dewsbury Hall as well.
- 10:09So, and he showed flashes in pre-season.
- 10:12He was showing flashes of dribbles and back heels and all of that.
- 10:15But the main thing is...
- 10:18apart from his goals, he has to hold the ball up well for us.
- 10:20He didn't really do that well against Crystal Palace.
- 10:23So I need that part of his game.
- 10:24Because watching Mateta hold the ball up at one end of the pitch, compared to what Barry was doing, Mateta was wrestling Brantway and Tarkovsky, who really struggled with him at times to hold the ball up.
- 10:35But Mateta missed a huge chance.
- 10:38So Tiero doesn't miss them anymore, does he?
- 10:42No, he's getting in and around the six-yard box.
- 10:44I mean, they're all tap-ins at the moment, but...
- 10:47Goal's a goal.
- 10:48You've got to be there, mate.
- 10:49That's ultimately, if you keep getting in them same places, they will come.
- 10:54As the boy who got the fourth goal for us, Brennan Johnson, showed what we all wanted, what we were all talking about.
- 11:01He came in at the right time and that's what we've been lacking, that's what we've been missing.
- 11:07That little get who's at the back post or that little sneak who's at the back post and he's just there and he just appears and they're there what you want.
- 11:16Them little horror bags who do it to you every time and I am just so happy we've got our own little horror bag who shows up at the right time and the right place now.
- 11:24He's a horror bag already?
- 11:26I know, yeah.
- 11:27Welcome Brennan.
- 11:28Oz, you did say that a couple of weeks ago, that you felt Brennan would come in at the back post and maybe score a few more goals and maybe some of our other wide players.
- 11:35Do you expect that to continue?
- 11:37Yeah, a lot.
- 11:38Especially, so obviously he scored from Tierno, but...
- 11:44The Dewsbury Hall will get five assists for Brennan Johnson this season alone.
- 11:49Those two lingering up.
- 11:50Dewsbury Hall getting down that left channel where he scored his goal from against Palace.
- 11:54And if he hits it at goal or the keeper saves it or, which actually happened in the second half when Brennan Johnson coming on, flashes it right across the face of that goal.
- 12:03Unfortunately, it was just a little bit too high.
- 12:06on Saturday against Palace but I could see that happening and obviously in the cup him just flying in at the back post being in that position understanding the strengths of his game because as I said he's a very good sounds bad he's a very good player without the ball in terms of
- 12:23knowing where to be.
- 12:24We've got enough people now that can be on the ball.
- 12:28You always have to have a balance.
- 12:29You can't have 11 players that all want to come to the ball and be on the ball.
- 12:32You'll never get anywhere.
- 12:33At the same time, you can't have 11 players that all want to run away from it and be on the end of a pass if you've got no one to play a pass.
- 12:39And we're just now starting to get a good mix of that because Tierno wants to run away.
- 12:44Brennan wants to run away.
- 12:45Gizbi wants to come to the ball.
- 12:47Ilamin Adai wants to come to the ball.
- 12:48Good players.
- 12:49Jimmy Garner can play in the past it's started to become a good balance Oz do you know in your squad who was that player who was the little sneak at the back post was it T.C.
- 12:58or was it Tim Gale
- 12:59Yeah.
- 13:01He was that guy.
- 13:02Yeah, just being in the right position.
- 13:03The thing Tim had as well is he never stood still.
- 13:08So, I mean, there's a lot of things now people say, especially in the middle of the pitch, sometimes to get on the ball you need to stand still, which is 100% right.
- 13:17But in the box, if you ever look at all of his goals, the minute the ball comes into play, he's probably the most mobile player in it.
- 13:25He had a trick of knowing whether to be in the back post or more often than not, just run down the path of the ball, where it's come from, head down there and trust himself to know how high he can jump to get on the end of it.
- 13:38And he was brilliant at that.
- 13:39You've got to have those players in your team.
- 13:42You've got to have people that want to run...
- 13:47and get on the end of things and score goals and affect the game in that way.
- 13:52And yeah, I think, so due to the whole scoring goals for us being in the right place, Brennan Johnson will be a bit more predatory by landing on things that bounce in the box and scoring those goals that way.
- 14:05It's a tough decision you've got to manage to make, isn't it then?
- 14:08When he's picking that starting line-up now, you've got players who do all different kinds of jobs.
- 14:14And I would think it's more about are we tactically set up now?
- 14:19If it likes to go away games and home games, I think we're adding a little bit...
- 14:24There's a couple more dimensions to our team, a couple of more, you know, different ways we can play, different ways we can get our teams, and I think with the people, hopefully, if we can get a couple more through the door, I think he's been quite outspoken in what he said in the press, that, you know, we haven't got enough yet.
- 14:41We need a little bit more quality, we need a couple more faces.
- 14:44But,
- 14:45I mean, Oz, you've been in football all your life, so you'd know, like setting up for games.
- 14:51So, you know, what would have been the thought process behind the Palace, setting up against Palace and then setting up against Preston?
- 14:58Well, Moise would have tactically looked at the opposition, how they're going to hurt you.
- 15:03how you can hurt them, what positions you need to hurt them.
- 15:08And the good thing about the Palace game in terms of being able to talk about this is they play with a different system.
- 15:14So now for the first half and certainly for the last 20 minutes, well, probably the middle 20 minutes in the first half, Crystal Palace system was beating ours.
- 15:24They weren't doing anything like, it wasn't like man-to-man they were playing better, but they were getting in pockets and systems and getting over the shoulder.
- 15:31And that'll be the stuff that they would have worked on as well, because as much work as you want to do going into a game, you know the opposition are working on something too.
- 15:39So they were fine, Adam Wilt was getting players in pockets that we really struggled to deal with.
- 15:44But then in the second half, our system took over and they couldn't compete.
- 15:49And that will have been all the work that's done on the training ground to make sure that you're...
- 15:54without thinking exactly where the benefit is going to be.
- 15:57Managers will tell the players, rather than you just trying to find it.
- 16:01Some players can find it when they're out there, by the way, but the manager will have helped.
- 16:06And you're right, he's now looking to the point where we've got options.
- 16:11I would have said last season,
- 16:13I could have probably told you, if everyone was fit, I could have told you straight away who are starting ten way.
- 16:19And then it was a toss to the coin whether he played better or Barry.
- 16:21But with Grealish on the left, Jai on the right, Jujbeul, Garner, Idrissa.
- 16:26It was always the same.
- 16:28Where this season, barring saying Jujbeul's going to play with his fits, Garner's going to play with his fits, Dye's going to play with his fits, barring that.
- 16:38I think the other players have started to give him a real decision to make, which is a brilliant thing to say.
- 16:45No guard's going to come in and have a run.
- 16:47Hackney, Hackney...
- 16:50I think when we bought him, I think we were thinking it might take, I don't know, two months to breed him into the team, to use him, to make him get to Everton.
- 16:59But because of injuries, we had to play him in that first game.
- 17:02And boy, did he take his chance.
- 17:03The same with Harrison Armstrong after a good summer.
- 17:07Get in the team, show us that you're ready to take this move.
- 17:10And he did.
- 17:10So now Moyes has gone, wow, these two are ready to play.
- 17:13I've got Garner who weren't available.
- 17:17I've now got...
- 17:20Decisions to make.
- 17:20The same with Tariq George.
- 17:24Come in and did brilliantly.
- 17:25We got Brennan Johnson.
- 17:26You would have thought it would have been a giant Johnson.
- 17:27George did great.
- 17:28Dibblen did well the other night again.
- 17:30And suddenly I'm going, you can now, as you've just said, Tony, go into games thinking, what's their fullback like?
- 17:37What's their opposition like?
- 17:38Where am I going to get people on the ball?
- 17:40Do we need them to beat?
- 17:41Well, that's probably better suited for.
- 17:44Brennan Johnson, oh, that's better suited for Hackney's runs forward.
- 17:48And now as a manager, he's going, wow.
- 17:51I can really manipulate this depending on what I've got, rather than I have to put this 11 out because I haven't got any other options and I'm going to ask them to do different jobs within the team.
- 18:01So it's a positive having those players step up.
- 18:06Oz, do the stats worry you that Palace have more possession and a higher XG in the game?
- 18:10I mean, listen, for me, I don't really care about them things, but for you as a player and being there, is that significant?
- 18:17Does that mean anything or does it just matter if you've won or not?
- 18:20Ultimately it matters if you win, because we've been involved in games where you've got great XG, you've created loads of chances and you've missed, or you've had loads of possession.
- 18:29Possession these days isn't all that.
- 18:33It's not our own, because we're our own.
- 18:36No, because we're not a team that...
- 18:39I mean, we're improving and we do get on the ball now, do have a little bit of play.
- 18:44But also, we don't panic without it.
- 18:46We don't go, oh my God, we've got to get... We know we're a pretty solid defensive structure.
- 18:50So, we don't mind not having the ball, which gives us a chance on the counter-attack.
- 18:55We like a bit of defending at times.
- 18:57We like seeing strong tackles.
- 18:58Even as a fan base, we like seeing counter-attacks, marauding runs, Merlin Roll maybe charging...
- 19:04Down the outside with pace.
- 19:05So possession isn't everything.
- 19:10It always depends on who you play against, but Crystal Palace with Wharton in the middle of the pitch are a possession team.
- 19:14So I felt they were going to have more possession.
- 19:17It was a slight concern their XG was as high as it was because obviously XG means that we're having a lot of chances against us, which means either we're being poor defensively or we get cut open.
- 19:32But at the same time,
- 19:34We've done that last season and the season before, I think, and trusted in Jordan Pickford, trusted in the defenders to make blocks.
- 19:40And yeah, we maybe rode our luck with Peteta's missing his chance and the other one that was out there as well on top of the Pickford save.
- 19:50But yeah, I mean, if that's a pattern every single week, then we'll eventually get hurt.
- 19:57We'll eventually get done.
- 19:58But in a game at home, first game of the season, results important, I'm not too concerned.
- 20:04Happy days.
- 20:06Before we look ahead to this week, obviously we're through to the next round of the League Cup, we've got Wolves in the next round.
- 20:12Is the League Cup a realistic expectation for us this season?
- 20:16How far do you think we can go?
- 20:17It better than I'd be.
- 20:18I need a trophy, I need something in my life.
- 20:20I need to go to Wembley.
- 20:22Something in my life?
- 20:23Something in your life?
- 20:25Yeah.
- 20:26I was in a conversation yesterday and one of my close friends just put in the group a...
- 20:32This new Hoover I've bought is absolutely fantastic.
- 20:36This is how embarrassingly pathetic my life has become.
- 20:41And you know what, mate?
- 20:42I related to it because I bought a Samsung Hoover a while back and I was over the moon.
- 20:47I was like over.
- 20:48It was brilliant.
- 20:49It was so powerful.
- 20:50It was so easy to use and maneuver around.
- 20:53And yeah, I just thought, oh my God, you're on the same level as him.
- 20:58It's Everton's fault.
- 20:59Oh, it's Everton's fault that you're getting excited by a Hoover.
- 21:03Yeah.
- 21:04And most of all, out of it, you were getting excited by how hard it sucks.
- 21:09Well, that's not what I said, Leon.
- 21:13What does a Hoover do?
- 21:15Now you've took the contract.
- 21:17It picks things up off the floor, Leon.
- 21:19It sucks things up.
- 21:20And you were just being obsessed with how hard it works and how strong it is.
- 21:23It picks things up off the floor, Leon.
- 21:25Don't be disgusting.
- 21:26I wasn't.
- 21:27I just answered your question.
- 21:28Tiny little football mind and you're using it wrong.
- 21:34You're manipulating the words that I've used and you're using it in a sexual-based context.
- 21:39It's disgusting.
- 21:41I never mentioned anything like that.
- 21:43You are not well.
- 21:44You need Jesus.
- 21:45That's who you need.
- 21:46You need to go to church and have a talk to someone saying things like that.
- 21:51Yeah, I think he's past that point, to be fair.
- 21:53Don't think there's any say with him.
- 21:54So, Tony needs a cup, so he doesn't have too much fun with his...
- 21:58I mean, I was even looking at the dates.
- 22:00I'm so excited.
- 22:01I was looking at the dates, 24th of October.
- 22:03I mean, this is all done by January, isn't it?
- 22:06It's just... February usually.
- 22:09By then, you'll probably have a hairdryer that blows to be obsessed by, won't you?
- 22:15You'll have switched to a new merchandise.
- 22:17You're doing it again.
- 22:18You're doing it again, you sick man.
- 22:19You're not well...
- 22:21I'm telling my wife off you I'm just talking about electrical equipment that you seem to be getting excited by these days I just said, I didn't say I did I told you a friend put it in a group and then I just thought I could relate to it because quite a while back now I had the same feeling but I'm sorry I brought you up now take this out the pod Liam no I'd definitely say it in right Bournemouth this Saturday what do we think, positive going into it
- 22:50Tone?
- 22:51Yeah, I am.
- 22:53I'm positive, but I don't know.
- 22:55What were they doing their first game?
- 22:58Got beat by City last minute.
- 23:00They were winning at City, weren't they?
- 23:02And they were winning 1-0 for quite a period of time, weren't they?
- 23:04I was trying to think they played.
- 23:06Oh, OK. And theirs is a new manager as well, isn't it?
- 23:10There's quite a few new managers.
- 23:11That was Areola where he was at.
- 23:13Do you know what?
- 23:19I think we can beat them.
- 23:20And I'll tell you the reasons why.
- 23:21I think Everton are set up far better away from home.
- 23:26I just think it favours us when we go away from home.
- 23:29And I just think, Ozzy was spot on with what he said before.
- 23:32Yes, we might have less XG and less possession.
- 23:34But we'll let you on the break.
- 23:36And I just think, I think Tyreek George might be the difference this weekend.
- 23:41I think he'll be the one who'll get at them and do them.
- 23:43Because that boy is looking like a player who's now comfortable.
- 23:48He's comfortable in his own ability.
- 23:51And I think he's thinking, you know, I can make the difference here.
- 23:54I can make the difference.
- 23:55And he's shown glimpses of that against Palace.
- 23:58I think he'll go all the way and he'll do it fully this weekend.
- 24:03I hope so.
- 24:05I mean, maybe this is slightly negative, but I'd take a draw going away from Obanarset.
- 24:11You don't always have to piss on the parade, you.
- 24:12You can't just...
- 24:13I'm not... You're saying, Barry's deflected goals.
- 24:16You're saying, you didn't mean this.
- 24:18And now you tell us I'll take a draw and Jesus Christ.
- 24:21I was a tip of yours.
- 24:23No, I'm being positive.
- 24:25This is just where I start.
- 24:26I'd take a draw just because new manager, for them, first game at home, they'll be buzzing.
- 24:31They qualified for Europe, I think, last season.
- 24:34So they're feeling quite good.
- 24:38They've got some great players.
- 24:42And I think it's going to be tough.
- 24:44But as you just said, we are capable.
- 24:46We've shown last season we're good away from home.
- 24:47I would be slightly concerned if we play that two central midfielders again away from home.
- 24:55Armstrong and Hackney.
- 24:56I think that's different than being able to go away from home.
- 24:59When you go away from home, you have to be really solid right through the middle of the pitch.
- 25:02You can't allow people to play through in the way Palace did.
- 25:06That's why we had Garner and Idrissa last year, sort of in the middle, difficult to sort of break through that area.
- 25:14So I probably expect Garner to play actually, maybe with one of them in that role.
- 25:20And I think that will, no, not Noga, I don't think he's ready yet, but that will thicken us up.
- 25:26And I think that'll give us a better chance.
- 25:28So does that do us?
- 25:29Do I think we can win?
- 25:29We can definitely win.
- 25:31We've definitely shown we've got enough quality in the team to win and we've been good away from home.
- 25:34But I would take a draw.
- 25:36What does that say?
- 25:37You know what you say about the two centre midfielders?
- 25:39So you basically want one of them now in the away game that really just sits and doesn't go missing.
- 25:45He just sits there like Idrissa did.
- 25:48Yeah.
- 25:49Yeah, kind of.
- 25:50But you can't...
- 25:52In the way we play it, in terms of we have two sort of holding midfielders and, as you see, we all play ahead.
- 25:58So it's not like we play two that play ahead and one that just sits and moves across, in which case you know that person always sits and that person isn't going anywhere.
- 26:07Like we had Lee Carsley all them years ago, never went anywhere.
- 26:11we play it as a two so you never the balance would be wrong if you said that one of them always has to sit but they have to get their they have to get their communication good they have to get their understanding good of when to go distances between each other
- 26:27Make sure you never leave the middle of the park.
- 26:29Look at Liverpool against Newcastle.
- 26:31I don't know if you saw the other day that Newcastle first goal.
- 26:35Liverpool emptied their midfield.
- 26:37They were all over the place.
- 26:39That being said, you cannot do that in the Premier League.
- 26:43That's so naive for players.
- 26:44And if we've got the two young lads, Hackney and Armstrong...
- 26:49I just know there'll be a moment in there where they just lose that, concentrating that understanding and they'll both leave the middle of the pitch too open.
- 26:58And Bournemouth are very good in there.
- 27:00So I think I'd feel better if Jimmy Garner's playing about the understanding of that.
- 27:06Because I tell you what, we've... Yeah.
- 27:09No, we're going to win.
- 27:09I've changed your mind, Tony.
- 27:10We're going to go there.
- 27:11We're going to go here and win.
- 27:12It's better than us.
- 27:14Positivity.
- 27:17Score prediction?
- 27:19I think we'll win.
- 27:19Yeah, I think we'll win.
- 27:21Yeah.
- 27:22To be fair, Baltimore did look good.
- 27:24They did look good against City.
- 27:26But as you said, Tony, I do think we're quite good away from home.
- 27:29Tell you what, Dibblin would want to sink these as well, wouldn't he?
- 27:33That's an interesting one.
- 27:34Southampton-Bournemouth.
- 27:36Yeah.
- 27:36That rivalry.
- 27:38Dibbling would hopefully want to sink in 80s.
- 27:41Hopefully he's on the pitch to do the job to them.
- 27:44I mean, Oz, what's... Cos that's just literally the other end of the world, that place, it's so far.
- 27:52What's travelling like that?
- 27:53I mean, they're just going to fly, aren't they?
- 27:56They'll just be on a flight.
- 27:58You would have travelled today in the past.
- 28:00Did you always fly?
- 28:02Yeah.
- 28:04So, if you're going to London, this is what we always did, if you're going to London, cos Runcorn Station's really close to the training ground,
- 28:12Runcorn to London, two hours, 10, maybe just two hours, and then you're at your hotel, it's no problem.
- 28:19But Bournemouth and places like that, Portsmouth, Norwich, they were always a lot more difficult to get to train-wise.
- 28:26There's no direct train.
- 28:27There's, I think it's like a five hour drive, definitely more on a bus to try and get on a coach to get to these places.
- 28:36Liverpool Airport right there, it'll generally be a flight.
- 28:40And the preparation for the flight takes longer than the flight.
- 28:42It's probably a 30-minute takeoff to landing in the air, but maybe not even that.
- 28:48But by the time you check in and you get to the airport and all that, as everyone knows...
- 28:52That takes a little bit longer, but it's just easier.
- 28:56It's going to be tougher for the fans.
- 28:58That's why I always think you shouldn't be able to play, and this is across all the leagues, they shouldn't give you one of these games in a midweek.
- 29:06If you're doing a midweek fixture, it's got to be close.
- 29:08In the same way if you're doing a Christmas fixture, it's generally not a crazy distance away.
- 29:14Because when I was on loan at Carlisle,
- 29:17Because midweek fixture, Carlisle playing Oxford.
- 29:21In fact, Carlisle playing people on the south coast and you're like, Jesus Christ.
- 29:25You turn up and there's 50 fans that have made the journey and you're like, wow, that is some dedication.
- 29:31But Everton, we'll fill that section every single time down at Bournemouth.
- 29:36And yet it's a ridiculous travel time.
- 29:40But we never fail to fill a section.
- 29:43the toffees?
- 29:45Well, to round up this week, I'm flying at the top of the fantasy footy after the first weekend of Premier League action.
- 29:51I haven't even looked.
- 29:54How did you do?
- 29:56I think I got like 65 points, Tony's in second, but you two are like really, it's all really tight to be fair.
- 30:02Last of the week one, you just said 65 points, did you just say you battered us?
- 30:06I'm like, I'm on 58.
- 30:07I didn't say I battered yet, I said it's tight.
- 30:11I said I'm flying, that was like a transition from the fly.
- 30:14I'm flying, I'm just seven points clear, yeah.
- 30:20I got more points on my bench than my bloody team, I think, and I didn't use it.
- 30:24It's not good, is it?
- 30:26What surprised you from last weekend?
- 30:29There was a couple of upsets in the first weekend of the Prem.
- 30:34You're a little sneak palmer in your team, you dirty little sneak.
- 30:39We said he was going to come good this season.
- 30:42I've already made a sub for next week.
- 30:45I took, as I tried to be clever with James Madison in my team from Spurs, I figured they'd be all right.
- 30:51And then he came on a sub in the first game, even though I'd have started, ruined it.
- 30:56And then he's got injured, broke his shoulder for a few weeks.
- 30:58So I changed him, brought in Cole Palmer.
- 31:02And then Cole Palmer had to come off with 10 minutes to go of his game because he looked like he'd injured himself.
- 31:07Nightmare.
- 31:08I've had a bit of a stinker there.
- 31:10Who surprised me last week?
- 31:13Obviously Hull was the big surprise, beat a man United.
- 31:152-0.
- 31:19Did anyone see that coming?
- 31:21Hull fans might have.
- 31:23United were poor.
- 31:24As much as Hull were good, United were poor.
- 31:26But that shows the difference in the Premier League because did you see his interview afterwards?
- 31:30Their managers came out and said, well, we've been watching because they only played a back five seven times last year, Hull.
- 31:38I asked you, horrible man.
- 31:41You horrible man.
- 31:42Why have you got a sack in your team?
- 31:44What are you doing?
- 31:46That is horrible.
- 31:48That's horrible, Ireland.
- 31:50couldn't afford Harlan you better save up and get him because that's not on we can't be having him in the team no I won't put reds in my team I mean when I'm struggling I would do like if they were flying there you go not that one not the one who scores the goals I'm in a few more leagues that don't make excuses if I don't have their players in then I get found out I get I need the points I'd just rather not talk about it though
- 32:20Yeah, so their manager came out and said, we saw that Man Utd struggled against a back five or against wing-backs during the whole of pre-season, especially in the Inter Milan game.
- 32:30So that's why we did it.
- 32:31And boy, did they continue to struggle against it.
- 32:34It was good management.
- 32:37You've got the options, you do your homework and you can get a tactical advantage.
- 32:43I think they'll bounce back this week, though.
- 32:45They've got Ipswich at home.
- 32:46I imagine Carrick will get some gear.
- 32:48Ipswich started well, Sunderland.
- 32:51They did.
- 32:53Yeah.
- 32:53Beat Sunderland.
- 32:54Yeah, I'd expect that.
- 32:56And then Forrest, I expected to beat Leeds at home, but good start for Leeds.
- 33:03Arsenal are doing well, aren't they?
- 33:05I mean, how have they picked up every concert?
- 33:07What a decent player he is.
- 33:09They've just come in and snapped him up, and I'm just like, what's going on?
- 33:13How many centre-halves do they want?
- 33:17I think Saliba's got a bit of an in.
- 33:18He's got a long...
- 33:19Yes, Saliba's got a while, isn't he?
- 33:21Yeah.
- 33:22But they already had one, they've got four good centre-offs.
- 33:27Their squad is... Their squad's not trying to win the Premier League this season.
- 33:32Their squad's trying to win a treble and a quadruple.
- 33:35Their squad's not just concentrating on the Prem now.
- 33:39They got to the Champions League final, they got to the late stages and finals of other cup competitions.
- 33:42They're...
- 33:44That squad doesn't say we're going to get over the line in the Premier League.
- 33:48Even if we got eight injuries, if they could get eight injuries and still win the Premier League with that squad.
- 33:54So they're after a lot more than that.
- 33:56It's good to see Spurs being Spurs-y.
- 34:01Spurs being Spursy.
- 34:04It was funny.
- 34:06All that money spent.
- 34:07I was at work and there's quite a few Tottenham fans there.
- 34:13I felt sorry for laughing at them, but I did.
- 34:15I did laugh.
- 34:17And laughed loudly.
- 34:18It was, as you say, being Spursy.
- 34:21They spent...
- 34:23Sorry, I think their midfield three was worth like £250 million or something along them lines.
- 34:29And they got outplayed by the lad Sangari, Mamadou Sangari, who was brilliant.
- 34:36He was class.
- 34:37And he was worth, what, about 39 million, 40 million?
- 34:40How was no one coming and got Adam Morton, mate?
- 34:46I would expect price tag.
- 34:48You think?
- 34:50Yeah, because everyone had won him, but...
- 34:53if you depend on how you have to play, availability, I don't know what his contract situation is.
- 35:00Because most of the people that are getting sold now and move, or a lot of them, have got like a year left on the contract.
- 35:06So they're getting to the point where the clubs are kind of forced into looking to sell because if they want to get any kind of money back for that player, then they have to.
- 35:16But if Wharton's got more than a year then,
- 35:20you're paying top price, you're paying far too much.
- 35:23I think he's a good footballer and everyone can do with good central midfielders.
- 35:29Yeah, there's not much time left on the transfer window now, is there?
- 35:32No.
- 35:34Here's a question for you, Tony.
- 35:35Yeah.
- 35:36Because we obviously want, I'm still trying to buy a right-back.
- 35:40Yeah.
- 35:40Probably interested maybe in a striker if one became available.
- 35:44Would you, obviously we want them, would you happily not sign any of those two players but keep Illyman and Dai, because there's a lot of noise around him at the minute, or which is more important?
- 35:59If we were to get a solid right-back, a striker, but someone's going to come in and nick Illy offers, Illyman and Dai offers.
- 36:07I'll answer that question.
- 36:08Where's that sit with you?
- 36:09I'm not sure you're happy with the answer, but...
- 36:11You've got to keep Illuminant out at all costs.
- 36:14And then you've got to get Jack Grealish back.
- 36:18Jack as well.
- 36:20He's linked to Sunderland at the minute, isn't he?
- 36:22He's not going there.
- 36:23Jacky boy knows what's good for him.
- 36:26Here's my take on the Jack Grealish situation, right?
- 36:30Would I have him back?
- 36:31Yes.
- 36:32Is he an amazing player?
- 36:35Yes.
- 36:35Is he a good sort of bit of experience for those around him?
- 36:39And it takes the ball in difficult situations and takes the pressure off our team?
- 36:44Yes.
- 36:45If we got him in, he would play near enough every single week on that left-hand side.
- 36:52And I think that stops the development of Tyreek George and potentially Diblin.
- 36:58And so if we get them back in now, Diblin and George have got another season of bit part player getting on for 10, because Moisey don't make subs till near the end, getting 10 minutes at the end and probably not getting the run of games that they need to really kick on.
- 37:16Whereas George showed enough in that first game maybe to...
- 37:20for us to sort of believe he can keep doing that.
- 37:24And then Dibbling might be able to.
- 37:25And then we've got Brennan Johnson.
- 37:27So I think if you bring Jack Grealish in as good as it is, it maybe hinders those other players.
- 37:34And although our squad's bigger and better...
- 37:38because of how much it'll cost us, probably, and because of his wages, all those things together just probably doesn't quite make sense for me.
- 37:48But I also wouldn't be upset if we got him.
- 37:50I mean... You know what I mean?
- 37:51He's going to come in as the highest paid player.
- 37:53He's going to come in.
- 37:53We'll have to sort of nick him for a fee.
- 37:55We'll have to...
- 37:55It just doesn't quite...
- 37:57I don't think there'll be a fee.
- 37:58I think there'll be a season long loan.
- 37:59They're going to try and get rid of...
- 38:01I don't know how it's going to go.
- 38:03Ultimately...
- 38:05We need a few more faces.
- 38:06The right-back situation's got to be sorted.
- 38:09Because Merlin Roll's done a great job Saturday, and as you said, but he's not a right-back.
- 38:13Let's just be all honest, he's not a right-back.
- 38:15And we've been playing square players in round holes.
- 38:21and you just can't keep doing it.
- 38:23Square players and round holes?
- 38:24I'm liking it.
- 38:26I'm trying to sign it.
- 38:27I don't know where that's come from, but it just came out with an answer.
- 38:30I've just got to own it.
- 38:33It is sort of a saying, but I think it's the wrong way around.
- 38:35Square players.
- 38:36Round pegs and square holes.
- 38:38I think it's the same.
- 38:38I don't know.
- 38:39It still works.
- 38:40It came out now.
- 38:42I'm just going to own it.
- 38:43It made sense to me.
- 38:44I told you my minds are tiny, a little bit bigger than ours.
- 38:47So, you know, it did make sense in the end.
- 38:49I got it.
- 38:50We're not talking about Hoobers and hairdryers so let's just leave that alone.
- 38:55But we need the right back mate.
- 38:57I'm gutted we missed out on Wan-Bissaka.
- 39:00But you don't understand why he'd choose Aston Villa.
- 39:04Yeah, they are out there though.
- 39:05As I said, I like the Newcastle Dedic come on and play for Newcastle at the weekend.
- 39:09I thought he would have suited us down to the ground.
- 39:12You've got Munoz who's
- 39:14Someone's just put a bid in for him yesterday.
- 39:17Is he gone?
- 39:17I thought he'd gone somewhere.
- 39:19Forrest.
- 39:19Leeds.
- 39:20Forrest have put a bid in for him.
- 39:21Obviously, Oliver Glasner.
- 39:23Trying to get him to follow him to Forrest.
- 39:26There are right backs out there.
- 39:27We can find them for the right price.
- 39:30And we all know we're still, Moises spokeily said, the board and hierarchy have also said we're after right back.
- 39:36Brings me on to Jake O'Brien and sort of saying that public, it seems that he's come out and said he doesn't want to play.
- 39:44He won't play right back anymore.
- 39:45He doesn't want to play right back.
- 39:48How do you feel about someone as a fan coming out and saying, I'm not prepared to do that anymore?
- 39:52Bearing in mind, we don't want him to play right back.
- 39:55And then following that up with, because he's not playing right back, he's now linked with leaving the club potentially.
- 40:03In my opinion, you're asking for trouble.
- 40:04As soon as you come out and speak it, I'm not going to do this, I'm not.
- 40:07The word I'm not doing that is, that's...
- 40:11Words, they're words.
- 40:13Yes, but them words are like, you know, what's the word I'm looking for?
- 40:20That's going on the attack in my opinion.
- 40:23I'm not doing this.
- 40:24It is.
- 40:26That's kind of, yeah, a manager doesn't want to hear that.
- 40:31I'm not playing in that position that you're telling me or asking me to do.
- 40:34That's not good.
- 40:36But that's just not.
- 40:37I was imagining you saying to the gaffer, I'm not playing there.
- 40:40I don't mind it.
- 40:42I don't think it goes down well in the squad either.
- 40:46But, Liam, what's your opinion?
- 40:49I kind of get it.
- 40:49I think he's definitely not a right-back.
- 40:52He's done it all season with no complaints.
- 40:54I think he's more on his right now to say, look, I want to compete for that centre-half space.
- 40:59And if you keep putting me right back, I'm not getting an opportunity to show what I can do there.
- 41:02He's got his own career in his mind as well.
- 41:04He needs to show that he can play centre-back at the top level, which he hasn't really been given that ability in the Premier League as of yet.
- 41:11So I don't mind it.
- 41:12And I think it could be taken two ways.
- 41:14Either he's causing a fuss or actually he wants to show that he can do the job there at centre-back for us.
- 41:20And he might see himself as potentially better than James Tarkowski.
- 41:25Yeah, well, so the thing is, it's fine if he comes in and competes now.
- 41:32I don't think he's ever going to just come in and go, right then, you're our starting centre-back when you make those statements.
- 41:37So you're going to have to stay and fight for your spot against the club captain.
- 41:42Now, if you're prepared to do that,
- 41:44fine, great.
- 41:45But if he's now saying, well, I can't see me playing and I don't want to sit on the bench, so actually let's force a move through to somewhere else, then that's not the right attitude.
- 41:55If you want to come in and say, I don't want to play right back anymore, but I tell you what, I believe in myself and I'm going to compete and it might take me a few weeks or a couple of months to get them out or if they get injured, I'm getting me a chance and I'm taking it.
- 42:09Like I said, the midfielders did at the weekend, then I'm all over it.
- 42:13because I don't like the thought of, well, I expect to play, and if I'm not playing, I'm just going to leave.
- 42:20For a few years, that's on him.
- 42:22As a squad and a team, can Jake O'Brien potentially be our centre-back for the next four or five years?
- 42:30Yeah, he can.
- 42:32I think if he was a vocal Tarkovsky-type leader, then every chance he'd be playing now, but the team needs its voice, and Tarky's that guy at the minute.
- 42:42Yeah.
- 42:43I've heard a lot of people saying Tarkovsky might have one season left in him, maybe at the top, maybe not even that.
- 42:49Well, that screams to me if I'm Jake O'Brien.
- 42:51Well, I'm going to make sure, although I'm not doing it to my teammate, but I'm going to make sure that only lasts three months.
- 42:57I'm going to make sure that I force my way in because we'd be crazy to let Jake O'Brien go.
- 43:02We can't keep him if he's really thrown his toys out the pram and forcing a move through because he's not playing.
- 43:10But I don't think he'd do that.
- 43:12So we'd be crazy to let him go because he's a potential good, solid centre-back that can work moving forward.
- 43:18But I just want him to stay and force himself into the team over the next three to six months.
- 43:26I really do, and I'd be happy with that.
- 43:28You know what?
- 43:29He's potentially got a world-class partner next to him in Jarrod Brantwaite.
- 43:35Because Jarrod Brantwaite is... Jarrod Brantwaite could be that Rolls-Royce
- 43:40He just needs more minutes on the pitch, more time.
- 43:43Stay away from injuries.
- 43:44But I'm telling you now, that boy's a player.
- 43:46I've seen him over the years at our football club.
- 43:48And he is definitely one.
- 43:49He is.
- 43:50He is.
- 43:52I'm not going to say it's John Stones quite yet, but I'm telling you now, mate, he's got some similarities that I see between him and Stones when Stones first come to the club.
- 44:01And I just think he needs minutes on the pitch and time on the pitch.
- 44:04And he will show exactly what he can do.
- 44:06I think Jared Brantley's right up there.
- 44:08So for someone like Jake O'Brien, I want to be playing with you.
- 44:11And if, or what Ozzy's just said, they're spot on.
- 44:13If I have to see through a bit of a difficult period...
- 44:16but I let the manager know, right, I want to play centre-half, but I'm here to stay.
- 44:20I'll help you in any way I can, but I do want to play centre-half.
- 44:24It's whether players these days, I don't know that they have these conversations with the manager.
- 44:28Does he go up to his office and say to him, listen...
- 44:31I think he's on his last legs and I know him better than him, but I understand why he's playing.
- 44:35He's the voice of the team and he keeps everyone together.
- 44:38Do them conversations still go on, do you think, Cos?
- 44:41I hope so.
- 44:42But one of the things I would do if I was Jake O'Brien is I'd be then showing to the manager, right, listen to me in the next three months.
- 44:49I'm going to be vocal.
- 44:50I'm going to shout.
- 44:51I'm going to moan.
- 44:52pull people into position I'm going to be, I'm going to turn into that voice.
- 44:56It might not be my normal character but it's one of the things I now need to show and improve and do to get into the team alongside Jarrett Branthwaite who you're right he's a Roll Royce, his injuries is his only question mark really because he kept getting those injuries and
- 45:15It has kept other clubs away from him.
- 45:17There's been no talk of him leaving because no one's paying the money that we'll demand with his recent injury issues.
- 45:25So that's been okay for us.
- 45:28With Jake O'Brien, I think he just needs to figure out a way of...
- 45:31performing every day and training and maybe keep on in Moyes' ear after every once a week.
- 45:37You know, I think I did all right there.
- 45:38I'm not far away.
- 45:39Make sure I'm there.
- 45:40Make sure you know because that also shows a little bit of sort of leadership.
- 45:45But I did find it funny that
- 45:48Jake O'Brien sort of made that statement.
- 45:51He didn't play at the weekend.
- 45:53And then going into this Carabao Cup game, I thought he'll start him in that game.
- 45:58Nope.
- 45:59Michael Keane played.
- 46:00Jake O'Brien sat on the bench.
- 46:01Unused substitutes.
- 46:02Basically, I think Moisey's testing him.
- 46:06I do, and to say, let's see how you react to this then.
- 46:08You've obviously come out and made them statements.
- 46:10Let's see how your character is over this next week.
- 46:13Let's see if you respond well.
- 46:15Let's see if you sulk.
- 46:16Let's see if you try and force through a move.
- 46:18Let's see what you're made of over this next few weeks because you've obviously just been disappointed there.
- 46:23You've not started either the first two games.
- 46:25You're not going to start the third.
- 46:26I think we all know that.
- 46:28Let's see what you've got, and it'll be interesting to see what he comes back with.
