- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Uh those were great.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: We're also going to kind of look at Proverbs and also the book of Psalms just a little bit, okay?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: And Christian, yeah, good to have you.

- 0:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, super excited to talk, continue to talk about the gospel according to Mark, John Mark.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, that's what we're gonna talk about today.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, so this this is this is gonna be good.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed last week, and we're gonna be diving into the meat of the book of Mark uh today.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And let's just let's just go into it.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Chapter number five.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Chapter number five.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: We have we what we're gonna see here is Jesus' power over the unclean.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Um, we're gonna see this that Jesus now is gonna be focusing, and he's in the other side.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: Now, this is the Gentile side.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Um, the gospel goes first to the Jews, then to the Gentiles.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: And Jesus models that.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: The book of Acts talks about how the gospel first to the Jews, then to the Gentiles.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: In the book of Mark, we see that where we see Jesus, we talked about this: Jesus in the synagogues, an unclean men comes and he delivers them.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: This is on the Israel side, the Jews.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Now Jesus is in the other side, in the gentle side, and he does the same thing.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: He has power over the unclean.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: So a demon possessed comes.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: This is Mark chapter uh five, verse one through 20.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Um, unclean spirit was leaving among the tombs.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: This is leaving among the dead.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: Now, Jews were not supposed to being around the dead or the sick or touch them, or pigs.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: And here we have a story.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: All those were no no, and Jesus was right there, and Jesus is among all of that.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: So uh we have here this man comes, um, knows who he is, Jesus heals him, delivers him.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Now, the different in the first uh in chapter one, I mentioned that Jesus told this man not to say anything.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: But now, chapter five, because he's in the gentile side, Jesus allowed this man to tell him about what he actually says, now go and tell everyone what you have experienced.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: Again, the messianic secret doesn't apply to the gentiles because the gentiles are not waiting for a messiah, only the Jews.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: So here, uh, it's kind of hard to keep track in the book of Mark because and he went to the other side, and he went to the other side.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: What's happening is Jesus is moving from the Jews to the Gentiles, and what you see doing in to the Jews, he also does on the Gentiles.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: He feeds the 5,000 in the um uh Hebrews, the Jews, and he feeds the 4,000 in the Gentile side.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: So we see this theme, but he's going back and forward, but he's just making a point.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: The gospel is for everyone, and this is why we see this immediately.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: He's going and going.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: So uh chapter Okay, I just learned something just then.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, I what I enjoy about even as we're doing this on the fly, we're studying this together, every once in a while you'll say something like, Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Because you know, you're going back and forth and the feeding of the 5,000.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And just like, I don't know why I haven't thought of that before, but yes, it was the Gentiles that he was uh doing that miracle and feeding stomachs.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: So he's a demon-possessed man.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: Um Jesus is forcing the worldview of the disciples and the Jews to change because now he is going to the places that they're not supposed to go.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: And he it's this is a declaration.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: The gospel is gonna go to all places, the gospel is gonna reach all people.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: Now, the disciples are a little scared because they're still they are following this Jesus guy.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: He has not revealed himself yes yet as the Messiah, but they are still have their own Jewish traditions.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: They know that they cannot be in those places.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: Now, there's something very interesting.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: He goes all to the other side for this one man, which tells us like we should do whatever it takes to reach one person.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and um, I was thinking about this as I was studying and meditating for in preparation for this podcast.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: Um we always think about the return of investment, right?
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and when I think about like Jesus got into a boat, goes to the other side to only reach one man, yeah, you know, but it just it I was like, well, that's not a good use of Jesus' time and resources, but it was because he's he's wanting to reach all people wherever they are, no matter how uh bound in this case, a demon-possessed man was.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: So Jesus is changing the worldview.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Now in chapter five, we go on and they cross when they leave the boat, he charged them because this demon-possessed man, what he's healed, he tells him, I want to follow you.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: He says, No.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: But go out and tell everyone.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: And the scripture says that he did go and share the gospel with everyone in his area.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Now he go, they go on to the other side, and there is a man, Jairus, um, which he was a um, he was a religious leader.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: His daughter is dying.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: Ask Jesus for a favor, come heal my daughter, and Jesus goes.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: And in the middle of that, and we talked about the marking sandwiches, uh, the woman with the issue of blood touches garments and stops.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Now, one of the things that I was thinking, if I was gyrus, if you were gyrus, how would you feel with this woman that just interrupted?
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: What do you need from Jesus?
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: But it's also what's going on with her.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Because again, you talked about Jesus over on the Gentile side, um, you know, pigs, uh, dead, you know, tombs and then Gentiles also.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: And then you have here an unclean woman that should not have been touching Jesus.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Uh she should have been isolated and removed, but yet Jesus immediately stops, turns around, asks, Who touched me?
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Thousands of people are probably around him.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're bumping up in him because the disciples point out, like, what do you mean?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Who touched you?
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Everybody's touching you, everybody's bumping up against you.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And no, no, no, he said, no, no.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: The power flowed out of me.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, somebody touched me, unlike anybody else touched me.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: There's was an issue of faith.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's beautiful.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: That that'll preach.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: And then the beauty about this is when she comes forward and said, you know, I touch him.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: The unclean, I I when I was in in Bible school, I remember talking about the unclean.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: And they were one of my professors was saying that an unclean person, when they were among the people, they will have to like ring a bell and just tell people unclean, unclean, so people will leave.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: Now, this woman has so much faith, it's crossing all the rules that they have.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: Touch him, he heals.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: But what I think what's beautiful here is what he calls her.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: He calls her daughter.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Now, we I talked about the Mark and sandwiches, right?
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: Bread, bread, meat.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: For us to understand what God is doing to gyrus' daughter, we have to understand what Jesus is doing to this woman.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: He calls her daughter.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: And I think the biggest teaching here, yeah, for us, beautiful thing that happened, but it's to gyrus.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: Jairus is probably asking Jesus for a favor, hey, come heal my daughter.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Because gyros is a religious leader, you know, somebody who had authority.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: But Jesus is teaching Jairus.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: I want you to care.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: Like I care for your daughter.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: I want you to care for the daughters of Israel, for the unclean, for the people who are on the outside.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: So we cannot really understand the resurrection of Jairus' daughter if we don't understand that we have to take care of the people that Jesus came to die for.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: So beautiful story uh in the book of Mark when um when Jesus heals two people.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: Uh, I heard it said uh many years ago that Jesus has the power to heal a generation and resurrect a generation.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: And I think that's the beauty of of God.
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: Nothing that is happening in the world surprises God.
- 8:56SPEAKER_03: He is in total control.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: And here is a great example of God is in control of this generation, and he's also in control of the next generation that is to come.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: So um let me just say I like what you had to say there.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: That was so good.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: I hope that people that are listening take that in, and because that was so so profound and so good.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: So um then we have the cost of discipleship.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: This is chapter six.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And while you're while you're kind of getting ready for that, let me just say something.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: There's a book, uh Cost of Discipleship, that I would encourage everybody to go read.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And um it is one of my great Bon Hoffer, right?
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, one of the great theologians of the um World War II period.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's just a beautiful, beautiful, it's a masterpiece.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: You had a chance to watch the movie?
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Uh you gotta read slowly, though.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: You gotta read slowly.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: It's deep.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Uh I did not see the movie.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I did, but I've read the book.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Beautiful.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And the book, you read his book that's off of the movie.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: It is phenomenal.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: And then I've heard that the movie was great too.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Oh, the movie was great on his life.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: Um, so then we have the cost of discipleship.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: This is chapter six.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and it says this chapter six, verse 14.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: It says, um, Herod, meaning King Herod, Herod of Antipas, the king, soon heard about Jesus because everyone was talking about him.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: Now, Herod was a king for the Jews, not really the king of kings, he was putting in there because they needed a king, but the king, somebody who should know the authority of Jesus, does not know who Jesus is.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: He just has heard about him.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: But I just I just read that because we're in chapter six and people still don't know who Jesus is.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: And this is important for us to understand when we're reading uh the story of Jesus.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: He doesn't know now.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: Then something terrible happens, and something that really was difficult for Jesus.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: John the Baptist is beheaded.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: Now, this is this story of John the Baptist being beheaded.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, we have to understand what it means because what Jesus, the purpose of white isn't here, is because Mark is trying to teach us what he's doing for the audience is that it's telling us that discipleship and death go together.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: Oh the cost of discipleship, it will cost you your life.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Yes, it's the whole message of Christ you must deny yourself, you must take up your cross, you must follow me.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Even with John, who he was the first one to proclaim that uh you know behold, the Son of God who takes away the sins of the world.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And but yet he is thrown in prison.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: It was said that Jesus said the greatest born among women.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Nobody would be greater than John.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and but yet yet he's in prison.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: So even tying into our Job, we're gonna get into Job a little bit later, but we in the last episode is that you know, in prison he sends word back.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: This gospel does not bring it to light, but um the gospel of Matthew does, and where he he sends back and he says, Ask, are you the Messiah?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Or should we look for another one?
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: The one that proclaimed.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is the Lamb of God.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: So he's having like second, what is going on?
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Because he also is thinking that Jesus is going to do it the way he thinks Jesus is gonna do it.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: And let me tell you something.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Jesus doesn't always do things the way you want things or expect things to be done.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Your plan uh for your marriage, your plan for your health, your plan for your job, your plan for doesn't always turn out the way you want it.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but if you'll trust Jesus, he he even sends back the message to John.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Well, tell John that you know, the lame walk, the the deaf here, the um the dead are raised to life.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: But he leaves out one thing.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: You know what he leaves out?
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: He says he doesn't he doesn't say, and the uh prisoners are set free.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he leaves that one out.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: And I always like that, like, oh my Lord.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: John would have known when he left that out, John would like, oh yeah, I heard you talk about that.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, and so therefore he he knows that that means that he he's gonna remain there.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: And John did die.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, but but Jesus ended by saying, But blessed are those, John, who are not offended by me.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in other words, he's saying, I might not do it the way you think it should be done.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but if you trust me, yeah, you will experience eternal life with me.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Jesus didn't, you know, they didn't come like they were, he didn't come like they were expecting to come.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: I think that's the whole whole purpose of Mark telling them who you thought that Jesus was, this Messiah, this king who was gonna overthrow Rome.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: This is not the Jesus that is coming.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: This is why Jesus says, I didn't come to be served, because kings, people who serve him, but this this this new king and this new kingdom that he has is to serve people, is to serve the people who you thought that you were too good to serve.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: And we see the example of Jesus.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: So the death of John, and here is later on in the other gospel, it's earlier.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: Um, it just shows you and me that if we want to be disciples of Jesus, the examples is that we will die for our savior.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Because to be a disciple, here's what kind of Mark What is portraying that to be a disciple is to be a martyr.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: You will die because of your faith in Jesus.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: And John is the example of what a disciple was gonna be.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: Pretty, pretty interesting what happens there.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: So, and then we have Mark chapter seven through eight.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna kind of try to cover those.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: I talked about the feeding of the 5,000 and the 4,000, but there's a lot to cover here.
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: So here we have Jesus and the Gentiles.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: Again, the gospel first to the Jews, then to the Gentiles.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: So Jesus is bringing salvation to both the Jews and the Gentiles, first to the Jews, then to the Gentiles.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: Um, in chapter seven, we have the Cyril, I don't know how to pronounce this, Cyril Phoenician woman.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's actually a Canaanite woman.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: It'd be simpler for you to say if you're listening out there and you're wondering, is a Canaanite woman?
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: So the Canaanite woman is talking about the breadcrumbs.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: It's another Mark and sandwich.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: We have the feeding of the 5,000, and then we have the feeding of the 4,000.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: And in the middle, we have this woman.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: What is this woman teaching us?
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: That the grace of God is sufficient, it will reach all people.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: And I I've always, every time that I'm like, well, that's like kind of like an odd story.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: Even the dogs eat the breadcrumbs.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: What it's saying is like the faith in this Messiah in Jesus will save all people.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, so we have uh also uh the healing of the deaf man.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: This is chapter 7, verse 31 through 37.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Then we have the feeding of the 5,000.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: This is in uh Mark chapter 8.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: 4,000.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: 4,000, sorry.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: 4,000.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: 5,000 was in the in the other side.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: Um, so we have here how uh everything that we see Jesus doing in the Jews, he's also doing with the Gentiles.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: So it's a beautiful picture of Jesus is here to save all people.
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: Now, Jews wanted someone to save them, and Jesus is saying, What I'm about to do, this is gonna be for everyone.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: This is why John portraits Jesus as the savior to the world.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: So it's not only for us, this is going to be for every single person.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: Now, Jews did not want the Romans to be saved because they've been oppressed by them.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: So, um, beautiful, beautiful story in there.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: Um, so Jesus crosses all types of boundaries between the Jewish and the Gentile territory.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: Again, I'm gonna mention this once again.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, the exorcism that we see in chapter one in the Jews with the Jews, we see it in chapter five with the Gentiles.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, Jesus became very popular within the Jews in chapter one, verse 29.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: And then he became very famous in the Gentile side, chapter six, uh 54 through 56.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: And then there are some symbolic healings that happen in chapter five that we see in the Jews side, and then chapter seven, uh, we have it um in the gentile side, and then that we have the feeding of the 4,000, the 5,000 and the 5,000, uh, that it's happening in chapter 6 and chapter 8.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: So here's what it this shows.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: It shows that God's kingdom is expanding beyond Israel.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: And this is this is all coming for the book of Acts of what's gonna happen, that God is gonna take the gospel through um all people.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: He's preparing the ground, he's showing the way.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's he's giving the example.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Um some of them did not get it, some of them didn't like it.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Uh, but when he is reaching out to uh a Roman, uh when he is reaching out to a uh a betrayer of the Jewish people who has become a tax collector, when he is reaching out to the Canaanite woman, when he is reaching out to you know the demonic that's running, you know, uh living among the the graves and who's a gentile.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: All of this, he is laying the groundwork for what we should be doing.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: That we just are not to be surrounding ourselves with people that look like us, smell like us, and think like us, that we are to be going to all the world and preaching this good news of Jesus Christ.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: That is what we should be doing, and that makes us uncomfortable.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: We don't like that, yeah, but that's what Jesus does.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: He puts us in uncomfortable places to be able to bring his kingdom.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: Can you imagine being a disciple and you being among the tombs?
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: Knowing your whole life, you're not supposed to be around the death.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: No.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: And now your rabbi is taking you there, but he's taking you there on purpose.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: No, you're gonna come and set the captive free because that's what Jesus came to do.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: But because we are Christians, we're a little Christ, ones who have the same authority as Christ, because the Holy Spirit lives inside of us.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: Now we can go throughout the world and do the things that we saw Jesus do according to the Word of God.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: So let's go into uh chapter number eight and let's look at um I think probably one of the key moments in the book of Mark.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: And we established it uh even last week when we said that really one of the great questions is who do you say that Jesus is?
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Obviously, remember Mark, the very first chapter, the first couple of verses establish that he is the Messiah, the Son of God.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Then he just begins to away from his arguments of who he made that statement clearly, what he believed.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: But then he says, he starts sharing everybody else's confession.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Uh God's confession and baptism, like this is my dearly beloved son, uh, demons that were confessing him as the Lord and Savior, uh, Gentiles, Jews, and now it's Peter.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: So take us there.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Can you read it?
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Mark chapter 8, verse 27 through 33.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Carsarea, Philippi.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: As they were walking along, he asked them, Who do people say I am?
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Well, they replied, some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Then he asked them, But who do you say I am?
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Peter replied, You are the Messiah.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: But Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: So we have Peter.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: Here's the turning point of the book of Mark.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: This is the, I mean, this is everything points onto this moment because now the disciples know who Jesus is.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: He revealed himself as the Messiah.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: And it's Peter's confession that says, You are the Messiah.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: Sometimes we we read this and we are like, oh yeah, Peter, Peter, Peter confessing him as the Messiah.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: No, no, this was a big deal.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: This was a big deal to them.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: He is confessing him as the messiah.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Um, and now Jesus uh wants to redefine what being the messiah means because to them was authority, power, military, our messiah is gonna deliver us from Rome.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: And Jesus is saying, What you think that the Messiah is, or what he came to do, is not who you think I am.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: This is why he established himself as the son of man, the son of God, because the son of man must suffer.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: And he, right after Peter confessed him, Jesus.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Says that he will die and that he will resurrect.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: And he talks about that.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: And Peter does not like that because they didn't understand.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: Even though they were following him, they didn't understand that.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: But Jesus is, and this is why he tells them, don't say anything, because he doesn't want people to have the wrong idea of the Messiah.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: So the whole book of Mark is going to watch you say, Who do you say that Jesus is?
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: It's trying to answer that question.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: And my question to you that listen is who do you say that Jesus is?
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: Because sometimes when God doesn't do the things that we want him to do, our view of God can change.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: And here we have Mark, he is writing this beautiful story of Jesus answering this question.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Like you said, verse one, he tells you who he is.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: But then he's just unveiling what people think until this moment that Peter sees and confesses, you are the Christ, you are the Messiah that we've been waiting on.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: He just still didn't understand quite what Jesus came to do, but he came to suffer.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: He came to suffer, he came to die a death that they were not expecting.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: They didn't want that death either.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Um, but Jesus is fulfilling the prophecies of Isaiah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: Isaiah 53, I believe that the suffering servant, this is what Jesus is proclaiming, what's gonna happen to him is pointing back to the prophets.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: No, the suffering servant will die.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: You know, he will he will his because the prophecy that by his stripes we will be healed.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: If Jesus doesn't suffer, we will not receive the healing that we needed to have relationship with God.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: So uh it is a beautiful thing that how Mark is portraying Jesus as this suffering servant, as of this messiah that is not the messiah that people were expecting.
- 23:54unknown: Yeah.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: You know, and and you point out, and I've heard you uh mention this, is that the cross isn't a detour.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Um, it's the destination.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: And it's the destination for us.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: We've got to keep the cross front and center in our life and realize that um even for us today, uh, I can't wrap my mind around completely who Jesus is, the Messiah.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: I have faith in him, and that's exactly what Peter and them do.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: They they professed him as Savior, but had no clue what was coming.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: And when you follow Jesus, I know it's been this way for me, yeah, is that you just say yes, Lord, and you obey him, and then you trust that he's gonna work all things for my good, even when it doesn't feel that way, even if it doesn't make sense, even when it hurts, even when, and he's also going to bring glory uh you know to him, yeah, when we obey him.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And so that's what we do.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: So that so this call of radical discipleship is even emphasized more in chapter number 10.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: This is the famous the rich young ruler.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: Rich young young ruler hasn't not an argument but a dialogue with Jesus.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: What must I do?
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: And Jesus telling him, Whoa, do these things.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: And he said, Well, I've been doing that since I was young.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: He said, But one thing you like, go sell everything and follow me.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: Something here to for us to put in perspective of what's happening in the story.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: The demon-possessed man is delivered.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Ask Jesus to follow him, and Jesus said no.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: But he says, Go preach, go tell everyone, and he does.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: Here we have the rich young ruler who Jesus invites him to follow him, but his possessions were too great for him to let go.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Many people wanted to follow Jesus and did not have the opportunity to do it.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: And here, Jesus extends the opportunity for the rich young ruler to follow him.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: This is why it's called a radical call to discipleship.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: Are we willing to drop the nets like the disciples were?
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Like Peter.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Peter left his business, they left their livelihoods.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: Everything that they knew to do, they dropped it to follow Jesus.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: And here we have a man who Jesus invites him in the journey and he said, I can't.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: So sad, so sad.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: And I'm I'm telling you, I I can't, I don't know people's hearts.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: I cannot make decisions for them.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: But I'm afraid that there's a lot of people today that they even come to church.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: But yet the truth of the matter is they're choosing to embrace and hang on to and cling to, you know, their stuff, their activities, their involvement without and those things are driving their loyalties more than Jesus Christ.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: And I think that one of the things that I try to count the cost, Shannon and I talk about this often, just laying it all out there and say, God, it belongs to you.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: This this church doesn't belong to me, my home doesn't belong to me, my income doesn't belong to me, that everything that I have in this world belongs to you, Jesus.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: And if you let me have it, that's great, but it's yours, and I want to follow you, not hang on to this stuff.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: And it all sums up, and with this, we close today's mark.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: Mark chapter 10, verse 45.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: It says, For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve others and give his life as a ransom for many.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: That is the point why Jesus came was to offer himself as a sacrifice.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: This the the the to offer his body as a sacrifice to well for people.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: So he didn't come to serve, he didn't come to be served, but to serve.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: So good, so good.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: So uh everybody listen to me.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: We've covered a lot of ground.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Uh again, um, we're about to dive into the book of Job.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: And in the book of Job, we're gonna cover the rest, 21 through 42, which is a lot.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Um and we cannot cover everything, but this is an overview of what's happening.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: But again, tell people where they can go find out more information, and they can get this off of our um uh specific um app that we have.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: So in our app, um, every time that we start a book, like the book of Job, the book of Mark, or whatever book we're starting, you will always find a Bible project video that will give you an overview of kind of what we're talking about, but they do it brilliantly.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: It they have images in it.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: It is it is beautiful to watch.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: So I encourage you to watch it um because you will be able to follow also with the images.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: But there's also resources on YouTube, there is uh Arma, all types of different ways for you to do that.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: But if you have a study Bible in your study Bible, you will be able to find notes.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, I encourage you, if you have a study Bible at the bottom, you will see the notes.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: Read those because it will help you understand uh what you're reading.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: That's good, that's good.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: So let's go into uh the book of Job, uh, chapter number 21, um, through verse through chapter 31.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: So 21 to 31, those 10 chapters are continuing the cycle of speeches.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: It is Job saying something and his friends giving a rebuttal to them, and then Job would rebuttal back to them.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: And so you get this bouncing back and forth.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: It's like ping-pong or tennis ball being served back and forth.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: And really, uh, in chapter 21, Job's reply to Zophar is that really the the wicked often um prosper in life.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: And Job is challenging them, the simplistic idea that suffering is just equal to sin.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: And in verse number seven of chapter 21, he says, Why do the wicked live on growing old and increasing in power?
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: And I think that all of us have struggled with that.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: We see somebody that we know ungodly people that are seemingly being blessed.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: But we also got to remind ourselves that there's a day of justice that's coming.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: There's a day that God's going to make all things right.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: It might not be here, it might not be in this life, but it will come soon enough.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: Jesus said the the the that the rain falls in the just and the unjust.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: We don't understand why, but we know, like you said, one day all of this is going to pass away pass away.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: And so in chapter number 23 and 24 is Job's again replied, because in chapter number 22, um there is, you know, his one of his friends gives a rebuttal, and and then he responds, and I want to point out this chapter specifically, chapter 23, because it did something for me when I was an 18-year-old.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: And basically what is going on here is Job is longing to present his case before God, and God feels so distant, yet Job holds to his integrity.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: Um, injustice seems unchecked.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: And then there is Job 23, verse number 10, 11, and 12.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: And I want to talk about that.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to give you the context of me, my situation.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: I was um very successful in sports.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: I was a little guy.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: I've never been a big guy, 5'9, 180 pounds, and but I was quick, I was fast, and I think I was tough.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: And I actually did pretty good.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Uh football, uh, led my classification in in uh, which was 4A at the time in passing um that year.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: And I was named the Oklahoma, Arkansas Player of the Year from uh newspapers in Fort Smith and Fayetteville, and and and I had some accomplishments in a basketball.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: I was very successful there and uh led our team going into state, the number one ranked team.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Um and and then in baseball, which was gonna be my real sport, is I was being recruited by some of the best programs out there.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: And that's what I wanted to do.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: That's what I've dreamed of, that's what I believed in.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: And I really felt like I lived for God.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: I felt like kind of like a job a little bit, and that I'm I wasn't perfect by any stretch, but I really got out and preached Jesus on the weekend.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: I go to arcades if you don't even know what arcades are, probably.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: But I think they'll see movies.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I think they're uh kind of being revived uh this generation.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: But I would go and we would share Christ with people on the even on the ball field, I I did.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: And so I just felt like God was going to use me uh in the athletic field, especially baseball, to be able to um share Jesus because we all have our own plans, don't we?
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: We think this is the way God should do it.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: And then um I had a situation, finals of area leading into the state playoffs, we and we were dominated.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: We dominated everybody pretty much, and I tore my ACL.
- 32:41SPEAKER_04: Ooh.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: Blew it out completely, I blew my knee out completely in that game.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: My team went on to the state playoffs, but back then in the 1980s, a surgery like that was not easy.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: It was four days in the hospital.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: It was in a cast or something up to your leg for almost two months.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: And then and back then in the 80s, 70s and 80s, professional athletes did not come back from that.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Um, and just to give you an example of how it changed, that was 1987 and 1995.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: I tore my other ACL, my left leg, had the surgery, woke up with my knee moving, and was walking the next day.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Walking with crutches, obviously, but um, but you're immediately because of the advancements that have had.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: But again, going back, I have this happen.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: I am struggling with God because I have the plans that I have for me, saith the Lord.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: Not God's plans for me.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: And um one night laying in my bed after I get home, I'm just giving this Job prayer, like, God, why, what, what, I don't understand, da-da-da, all pouring out.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: And he directs me to Job chapter 23, verse 10.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: And I begin to read this passage and let me read it to you.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: This is what he spoke to me when I had just been weeping, weeping, crying out, telling God about why he what he should be doing in my life and how this is injustice.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: And he gave me this, he said, But he knows where I am going, and when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: And that's still my life first that I hang on to.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Verse 11 says, For I have stayed on God's paths, I have followed his ways and not turned aside.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: And those words I still cling to today, and I just encourage people that get God's word in you.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Heaven and earth will pass away, but God's word remains.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: The flower fadeth, but God's word remains.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: And when you get God's word in you, then when you go through, because that was something that got me through that time and season, but that passage has been a life verse for me that I've actually defaulted to it many times when I have had disappointment and struggles, and I'm curled up in a ball in the middle of the night crying.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: I will be referring to this passage and realize that God knows what he's doing and he's working for my good and for his glory, and I just gotta trust him.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: It teaches us the importance of the word of God in our life.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: You know, part of our faith framework is we need the word of God.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: Um I love how it says, I treasure your word more than daily food.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Um, we need the word of God in us.
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: We need to develop this habit of reading the word of God daily because things like what you experience will happen to all of us, not necessarily how it happened to you, but it might be the loss of a child, it might be the loss of a family member, uh a job, hardship.
- 35:55SPEAKER_03: But it is the word of God, the more word of God that we have that we have deposited in our heart, it's it is that that keeps us going when we are in um going through trials and tribulation and and difficult times.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Um, and I think you you you mentioned this many years ago in a sermon that that uh reading the word of God is like it's like making deposits into a bank account.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: And the moment that you need it, that the Holy Spirit will will bring it back to memory to you.
- 36:26SPEAKER_03: Uh I love I love that Job said that because if there was someone who went to went through it was Job.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: And the example here is like I treasure his word more than I do daily food.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: So let's let's move on.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: And Job chapter 26 through verse number 31.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Uh now you have uh Job's final argument.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, he's given his final defense and he takes a lengthy time here to tell his friends.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: And he just maintains his innocence.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he declares the greatness of God, and he hasn't lost sight of that.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: And I think that's one of the key things is that when we go through difficult times, we still got to declare his goodness and his greatness.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: And that all wisdom really belongs to God, not to us.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: We're not meant to figure this thing out.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: And then he says that in Job chapter 28 and verse 28, he says, The fear of the Lord, this is wisdom.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: And then the book of Proverbs says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, plays off of that.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: And he's writing this thousands of years before Proverbs were written.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: And to shun evil is understanding, he says.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: Wow, that's what it's about.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: And then you have um, you know, a final rebuttals of his friends uh that's given.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: But um but then in chapters number 38 through 41.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Finally, God shows up, and God speaks.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: Yes, but does God give an answer?
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: No, no, you know what God just does?
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: He asks questions.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, were you there?
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: I know it is just amazing.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: In fact, I I I want to read just some of that.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: I want to go to the book of Job and just kind of scan over.
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: It just shows that that uh what you what you what you find that that we ask questions and we think, I think I mentioned this last week, that we think that God owes us an explanation for things.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: No, and and he doesn't, he doesn't, but he uses everything that we go through for his good to prepare us, to shape us.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: So yeah, Job wanted answers.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: So in chapter 38, um the title of it, at least in my my Bible, is The Lord Challenges Job.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Not like I didn't have challenges already.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know, but there's also part of me too is that I'm I'm kind of a guy that I've always taken a challenge.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Um even when it comes to boxing and stuff, I'm like, I might have been a little guy, but another guy's like, but I I just I can't resist a good challenge.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: But with God, oh no, no, no.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: I pass on that one.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: And then it says in verse number one, it says, The Lord answered Job from a whirlwind.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Well, that's how he starts.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: It's like, great.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Um, can you imagine what it felt like to be in Job's shoes at that moment?
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: And then here's the questions God begins to ask.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: Just listen to this.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: And I'm I'm gonna I may skip around because it's like chapter after chapter, it just it's nonstop.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words?
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: Brace yourself like a man because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: I'd be shaking in my boots.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Tell me, if you know so much.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line?
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: What supports its foundations?
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: And who laid its cornerstone as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: Who kept the sea inside its boundaries as it burst from the womb?
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: And as I clothed it with clouds and wrapped it in thick darkness.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: I said, This is how far.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: No further will you come.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: Here your proud waves must stop.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and cause the dawn to rise in the east?
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Have you ever made daylight spread to the ends of the earth to bring an end to night's wickedness?
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: This is amazing.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, you read this.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: And then let me just I'm gonna go in chapter number 39.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: I'm not even halfway done.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: I'm just I'm just only a quarter of the way to chapter 38.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: Let's go to 39.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: He says, Do you know when because I love these right here, do you know when the wild goats give birth?
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: Have you watched as deer are born in the wild?
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: Do you know how many months they carry their young?
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Are you aware of the time of their delivery?
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: They crouch down to give birth to their young and deliver their offspring.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Their young grow up in open fields and then leave home and never return.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: Who gives the wild donkey its freedom like that?
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: Who untied its ropes?
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: I think of that song.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Who let the dogs out?
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: Who let the donkeys out?
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: I have placed it in the wilderness.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: Its home is the wasteland.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: And it's just one after another, and then chapter number 40, he kind of breathes a little bit, and then he starts going again.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said again to Job, Do you still want to argue with the Almighty?
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: You are God's critic, but you have no answers.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: This is just awesome.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: And he just goes on and on and on and on, and through chapters 38 through chapter number 41, and then in chapter number 42 is Job's restoration.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Talk to us a little bit about that.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: So Job repents in humility, very, very um beautiful picture.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: Um, going back in all the questions that you were asking, it just shows that God is in control.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:45SPEAKER_03: We don't have explanation to any of that, but what God is in, I'm in control.
- 42:49SPEAKER_03: So part of Job's restoration is that God rebukes Job's friends for misinterpreting him.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: And I am, when I read the story, Job is innocent.
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: I feel like if it was me, I would be like, maybe I did something.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: But he is, no, I didn't.
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: I've been faithful to the Lord.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: Um, and Job um God rebukes them.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: And then Job intercedes for them.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: And this this is very important because I mean, Job does not hold that against his friends.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: That speaks to his blamelessness.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: It speaks to the beauty of his relationship with God and his trusting God.
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: Because if you cannot forgive those who have wronged you, then there's something with your ability to be able to trust God.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: And that's the same with me.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: There's times that I have not, like, uh-oh, I'm not trusting God.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Because if I can trust God, then I can forgive them.
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: Because God's forgiven me.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: God he repented, God forgave him.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: And then God restores Job's fortunes and blesses him abundantly.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: Now, this is key to note too though, is that he restored all of his fortune, which is awesome.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: And he was better off at the end.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Than he was at the beginning.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: God cannot and did not restore his family.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he had more children again.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: But that still doesn't replace the the ten kids you lost.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: And I I think that people listen to me right now, God will restore.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: There's some things he might not be able to put back.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: He can't put back the lost loved one.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: But here's the blessed hope we have.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: The things of this world will burn up.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: Job got back all that stuff that just he he won't take to heaven with him.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: He knew that he could go see his kids again.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: And the hope that we have in Christ is that this life is just we're pilgrims passing through.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: It is just a brief moment in time.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: But what we get to look forward to is spending eternity with Christ.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: And that's that's the great hope that we have.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: That's so good.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: I love how you talked about uh how he he he had more children, but the pain of losing those children was very real.
- 45:03SPEAKER_03: And I think that in even in my personal life, um, I have great friends who have moved away.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: That uh God brought new great friendships, but that doesn't take away of the pain of that those friends that are not longer close to me.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: But it's it's I I love that you touch that because I think sometimes preachers and pastors will preach like, well, God gave Job double the things that well, there were things that he God couldn't replace.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: No, so yeah, you know, it job responds with humility, with repentance, he trusts in God.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: That's the whole story, and that's what it speaks to us.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: And so just read, oh, just keep diving into God's word and keep giving yourself to it in God's glory.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: So let's just let's give a proverb again.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm gonna give a proverb and then I'll I'll let you just kind of give us just a brief thought on the book of uh Psalms 119.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: Just some maybe key things that you can think of.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: I know we're not we're not gonna dive into 119, but I just wanted to give some key thoughts.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: So Proverbs, here's a here's your thought for the day.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: Uh Proverbs chapter 27 and verse number two.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: It says, Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: A stranger, not your own lips.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: That's a great one.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: Because we like to boast in ourselves.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: I like to.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: Everybody does.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: That's what we do on social media.
- 46:25SPEAKER_00: We want everybody to just see how great we are.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: And I just took the thought, praise you.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: Let somebody else.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: It is so challenging, I wrote, to resist tooting my own horn.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: I want credit for what I've done.
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: And I deserve others to acknowledge my accomplishments.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: I like being seen and recognized, at least at some level.
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: But this is not the way of a Jesus follower.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: They are okay with realizing that God sees everything and waiting for Him to bring the good they've done to light.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: And uh to end with Psalm 119.
- 47:06SPEAKER_03: It's the longest chapter in the Bible.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: It is pages upon pages, this chapter, this specific chapter.
- 47:14SPEAKER_03: But it's so important for us because it talks about how important the word of God is in our life.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: The famous verse of the the word of God is uh it's a light into our path.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: Is that how it goes?
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: So um it it shows us and it tells us how important the word of God is for us.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: Throughout there, it speaks to that again and again and again and again.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna dive into it a little bit next week, uh the next the next episode.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, it's the longest.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is right in the almost the center of the Bible.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: The whole Bible, yeah.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: And it's just a beautiful, beautiful passage.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: I started one time to memorize the whole chapter.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of verses.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: I think it's 150 verses.
- 48:02SPEAKER_00: I did, yeah.
- 48:02SPEAKER_00: Well, well, I know when you try to memorize it, you learn real quick.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: There's a lot, and I got about a third of the way through.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 48:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's long, yeah.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: And then I was like, oh, I can't do this.
- 48:13SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't have given up, probably, but I let some circumstances of life kind of keep me from memorizing that whole thing.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: Hey, hey, thank you again, Christian.
- 48:22SPEAKER_03: Well, thank you for having me.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: Do us a huge favor, share this with someone.
- 48:26SPEAKER_03: Text it, send it on on if you're watching on Facebook.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: Some people watch this on Facebook, share it with everyone.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: It's help gonna help us and let us know if this is helpful.
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, hey, and again, thank you very much.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: I appreciate you joining us each and every week.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: We do want to hear from you, and may God's blessing be upon your life.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: May you continue like Job to fight the good fight of faith.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: And we'll look forward to seeing you next time on the North Bible recap.
