- 0:00Speaker 1: My ears?
- 0:01Speaker 2: Best piece of music equipment I own. They've been with
- 0:03Speaker 2: me through everything, even the 90s. Back when you'd hear
- 0:06Speaker 2: about parties from photocopied flyers. Before outdoor raves moved indoors.
- 0:11Speaker 2: And now, the music's changed. But I wanted to make
- 0:14Speaker 2: sure my ears hadn't. So I did the free online
- 0:16Speaker 2: hearing screener from Specsavers. And got on the test list.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Only took three minutes. It's like my own little sound check.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Try Specsavers' free online hearing screener. Visit the website to
- 0:26Speaker 2: find out more. Hearing screener is not a diagnosis.
- 0:30Speaker 3: The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going
- 0:33Speaker 3: for it? This exclusive place that Dad has connections with.
- 0:36Speaker 4: They have more cars for more dealerships than like anywhere else.
- 0:39Speaker 3: You have to put me in touch. What's it called?
- 0:41Speaker 5: It's Dunaidial.
- 0:43Speaker 6: Where?
- 0:45Speaker 5: Dunaidial.
- 0:46Speaker 3: There's an accent on the E. Do you mean.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Yes, I got it on Dundale Cars.
- 0:51Speaker 7: Lift?
- 0:52Speaker 5: Please.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Are you going past Kimmage?
- 0:54Speaker 5: Oh, Kimmage.
- 0:55Speaker 8: No.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Dundale Cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
- 1:00Speaker 6: Lux presents Hollywood.
- 1:12Speaker 9: Lever Brothers Company, the makers of Lux Flakes, bring you
- 1:16Speaker 9: the Lux Radio Theater, starring Dana Andrews, Donna Reed, and
- 1:21Speaker 9: Ann Revere in Deep Waters.
- 1:25Speaker 10: Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr.
- 1:26Speaker 6: William Keeley.
- 1:27Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 1:32Speaker 11: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. Since the days of
- 1:37Speaker 11: the clipper ship, men of the main coast have followed
- 1:40Speaker 11: the sea. They've conquered its storms, lauded its beauties, and
- 1:44Speaker 11: scorned the lowly landlubber. Tonight's play is the drama of
- 1:49Speaker 11: such a man, of a girl who loves him and
- 1:52Speaker 11: a child who.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Brings them together.
- 1:54Speaker 11: It's the 20th Century Fox motion picture, Deep Waters, a
- 1:58Speaker 11: story of great charm and sincerity. And we have the
- 2:01Speaker 11: same star you saw in the film, Dana Andrews. Playing
- 2:05Speaker 11: opposite Dana tonight is a young lady who's always been
- 2:08Speaker 11: a favorite here, the lovely and talented Donna Reed. The
- 2:13Speaker 11: scene of the play is that stern and rock-bound shore
- 2:16Speaker 11: called Down East. As a matter of fact, it's probably
- 2:20Speaker 11: the most easterly point in America where Lux Flakes are used.
- 2:24Speaker 11: But east or west, American housewives know that luxe flakes
- 2:28Speaker 11: are equally dependable everywhere, and they act accordingly. It's playtime,
- 2:33Speaker 11: and here's the curtain rising for the first act of
- 2:36Speaker 11: Deep Waters, starring Dana Andrews as Hod, Donna Reed as Anne,
- 2:41Speaker 11: and Anne Revere as Mary.
- 2:44Speaker 7: ¶ ¶.
- 2:54Speaker 11: A little fishing village on the coast of Maine. A
- 2:57Speaker 11: car stopped at a pleasant little house not far from
- 3:00Speaker 11: the bay. A car bearing the emblem, State of Maine
- 3:04Speaker 11: Welfare Department. A young woman and a boy have reached
- 3:08Speaker 11: the end.
- 3:08Speaker 10: Of a journey.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Well, Donnie, it's a nice house, isn't it?
- 3:15Speaker 12: Yes, ma'am.
- 3:16Speaker 13: Gosh, Miss Freeman, look at that bald-headed schooner out there
- 3:19Speaker 13: in the bay. She's just like the one Uncle Ma
- 3:21Speaker 13: used to have.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Yes, Donnie.
- 3:23Speaker 13: You like boats, Miss Freeman?
- 3:24Speaker 4: Well, some of them, maybe.
- 3:26Speaker 13: I sure like boats. Better than anything, I guess.
- 3:29Speaker 5: Oh, come in, Ann. Been expecting you all afternoon. Hello, Mrs.
- 3:32Speaker 4: McKay. Well, here he is. Donnie, this is Mrs. McKay.
- 3:37Speaker 14: Donnie?
- 3:37Speaker 13: How do you do, ma'am?
- 3:39Speaker 5: How old are you, Donnie?
- 3:40Speaker 13: Going off 13.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Mighty small for your age, aren't you?
- 3:44Speaker 7: No, ma'am.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Father drowned at sea, huh? Ain't unusual in these parts.
- 3:50Speaker 4: He lived with his uncle after that, Captain My Mitchell
- 3:52Speaker 4: of Port Clyde.
- 3:53Speaker 8: Well, boy.
- 3:55Speaker 13: Uncle My, he's dead, too.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Lost in the big storm of March three years ago. Well,
- 4:01Speaker 4: since then, Donnie's been a ward of the state.
- 4:02Speaker 5: Hmm, quite a record he's made for himself. Run away
- 4:06Speaker 5: three times.
- 4:07Speaker 6: Why?
- 4:07Speaker 4: I think I can explain.
- 4:08Speaker 5: Elkins Farm, Woldo County, eight months. What'd you run away for?
- 4:12Speaker 13: Didn't like the farm.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Mm-hmm. An apprentice to Manuel Santos, storekeeper, Waterville, six months,
- 4:18Speaker 5: ran away. Why, didn't like him neither?
- 4:20Speaker 7: No.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Well, maybe you won't like it here.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Oh, I think he will. It's a lot different here, Mrs.
- 4:25Speaker 7: McKay.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Oh, let him answer for himself.
- 4:26Speaker 13: Well, I don't know. I guess I will.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Will what, run away?
- 4:30Speaker 11: No, ma'am.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Any cut wood?
- 4:33Speaker 13: Yes, ma'am.
- 4:34Speaker 4: He's a good boy, Mrs. McKay. He wants to learn,
- 4:37Speaker 4: and he needs your guidance.
- 4:38Speaker 5: You want to see your room, Donnie? Go on up
- 4:40Speaker 5: the stairs, first door on the right.
- 4:41Speaker 13: Yes, ma'am.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Now, you understand this, Ann. I'm taking the boy only
- 4:46Speaker 5: on probation. If he's a good boy, I'll keep him
- 4:48Speaker 5: and glad to do it. If he isn't, back he goes.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Yes, I understand.
- 4:51Speaker 5: I can't help it if he's a state kid and
- 4:53Speaker 5: an orphan. All I want is someone to do the
- 4:55Speaker 5: chores now that I'm all alone here.
- 4:56Speaker 4: You're going to like him. Everybody does. He's a fine boy.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Fine boys don't snoop. Hey, you up there, what are
- 5:03Speaker 5: you snooping for? You want to hear something, come down
- 5:05Speaker 5: and listen.
- 5:06Speaker 4: I don't think he's snooping, Mrs. McKay.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Well, maybe not.
- 5:09Speaker 4: He's had a hard time these last three years. That
- 5:12Speaker 4: Portuguese storekeeper treated him very badly. Our board's investigating it
- 5:15Speaker 4: right now.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Oh, poor little devil.
- 5:17Speaker 4: That's why I brought him to you. You've raised kids
- 5:20Speaker 4: of your own.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Oh, I'm not going to raise any more now, Ann Freeman.
- 5:22Speaker 5: I've got no affection left to pour out on anybody.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Sure, I know you.
- 5:26Speaker 5: As far as I'm concerned, he's just a boy to
- 5:28Speaker 5: do the chores. You hear that, Donnie? Just a boy
- 5:30Speaker 5: to do the chores.
- 5:31Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Well, say hello to your ma for me. Haven't seen
- 5:34Speaker 5: her lately. How's she been?
- 5:35Speaker 4: No better, no worse. After Pop died, well.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Oh, you ask me, Anne. I tell you, we women
- 5:41Speaker 5: deserve all the misery and the heartache that's ever come
- 5:44Speaker 5: to us. Not a brain in our heads. Marrying seagoing men,
- 5:48Speaker 5: spending half our lives looking out to sea, wondering when
- 5:50Speaker 5: they'll come home, if they'll come home. A woman who
- 5:53Speaker 5: marries a fisherman ain't got the sense to.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Oh, Anne, I'm sorry. Guess I forgot about you and
- 5:59Speaker 5: Hod Stillwell. Hod?
- 6:01Speaker 4: Oh, don't be sorry. We broke our engagement last week.
- 6:04Speaker 7: Oh, Anne.
- 6:05Speaker 4: It's all right. I feel just the same as you do.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Come on down, boy. Let's have a look at you.
- 6:11Speaker 13: Yes, ma'am.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Now, first off, you know, we're not going to get
- 6:15Speaker 5: anywhere acting like a couple of dogs.
- 6:17Speaker 13: I ain't no dog.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Nobody said you was. But you were shying off like
- 6:21Speaker 5: I was going to chain you up. Now, nobody's trying
- 6:24Speaker 5: to put anything.
- 6:24Speaker 14: Over on you.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Just you do your work around here, and I'll do
- 6:27Speaker 5: my part by you. And anything you don't like, just
- 6:29Speaker 5: speak up and say so, because I will.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Understand?
- 6:32Speaker 13: Yes, ma'am.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Didn't aim to jump you the first minute you got here. Now,
- 6:36Speaker 5: you get yourself washed, and we'll have some supper.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Goodbye, Donnie.
- 6:39Speaker 13: Goodbye, Miss Freeman.
- 6:40Speaker 5: Oh, you're not staying in? I thought you were going
- 6:42Speaker 5: to stay.
- 6:42Speaker 4: No, but I've got to stop by the post office
- 6:44Speaker 4: before it closes, and I'm driving out to Mother's place.
- 6:46Speaker 4: I'll be back during the week. Thanks again, Mrs. McKay.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Maybe I'll be thanking you. Huh, Donnie?
- 6:52Speaker 7: Ma'am.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Then again, maybe not.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Be a good boy, Donnie. You'll do fine here. Just fine.
- 7:06Speaker 14: Here's your mail, Hod. Looks like most of it's for
- 7:09Speaker 14: your partner, though.
- 7:09Speaker 1: As usual.
- 7:10Speaker 10: Thanks, Ab.
- 7:11Speaker 6: How's lobstering?
- 7:12Speaker 10: I've seen it worse. Hey, Joe.
- 7:14Speaker 14: Mail.
- 7:15Speaker 8: For me? Hey, I'm very popular fella, huh?
- 7:18Speaker 10: Here. Joe Sanger. Joe Sanger. Oh, Farm Magazine.
- 7:22Speaker 8: Ah, thanks.
- 7:23Speaker 10: Very good. Wait a minute. There's more. Joe Sanger. Mr.
- 7:27Speaker 10: Joe Sanger. Joe Sanger, Esquire.
- 7:30Speaker 8: That's me, too.
- 7:31Speaker 10: At least I got a bill. Holy smoke, what have
- 7:33Speaker 10: I got for a partner, anyway?
- 7:34Speaker 7: Me?
- 7:35Speaker 6: Who you think?
- 7:36Speaker 15: Hey, look at this one in the magazine. I raised
- 7:39Speaker 15: my family on walnuts, says Leroy Helton.
- 7:42Speaker 10: That's, huh?
- 7:42Speaker 6: No, walnuts. That's something, huh?
- 7:45Speaker 10: I thought you were a turkey man, Joe.
- 7:47Speaker 8: No, I'm through with turkeys. Turkeys you got to feed.
- 7:50Speaker 8: But these walnuts, they just drop off and you reach.
- 7:52Speaker 10: Just like that, huh? A dime in every walnut.
- 7:55Speaker 6: Yeah, sure.
- 7:55Speaker 8: No, no, no. These things you got to.
- 7:57Speaker 10: I hate to disturb a millionaire, but we've still got
- 7:59Speaker 10: to eat.
- 8:00Speaker 6: Oh, sure.
- 8:00Speaker 8: I almost forget the groceries. I get them, Hod.
- 8:02Speaker 6: I'll see you down at the dock. I've got a
- 8:04Speaker 6: couple of.
- 8:04Speaker 14: Oh, hello, Ann.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Oh, hello, Hod.
- 8:07Speaker 6: Now, wait a minute.
- 8:08Speaker 10: Don't run away. Breaking our engagement isn't going to start
- 8:11Speaker 10: a feud, is it?
- 8:13Speaker 1: No, I.
- 8:13Speaker 4: I don't see why it should.
- 8:15Speaker 10: Still friends?
- 8:17Speaker 4: Still friends, Hod.
- 8:18Speaker 10: Then we still got that date tonight, huh?
- 8:20Speaker 13: Date?
- 8:20Speaker 10: Yeah, this is Friday, remember? We were going to dinner.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Oh, I'm sorry, Hod, but I'll have to work tomorrow.
- 8:24Speaker 10: Did you change your job?
- 8:26Speaker 1: Why, no.
- 8:27Speaker 7: Why?
- 8:27Speaker 8: Why, nothing.
- 8:28Speaker 10: Only when you made the date originally, you had to
- 8:30Speaker 10: work just the same.
- 8:31Speaker 14: All right.
- 8:32Speaker 4: We've got a date then. But just as friends. Nothing more. Promise?
- 8:36Speaker 10: Absolutely. Talk about nothing but the weather. Seven o'clock.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Okay, Hod.
- 8:40Speaker 9: I'll be ready.
- 8:50Speaker 10: Feel like dancing? Somebody just loaded the jukebox.
- 8:53Speaker 4: All right, Hod.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Sure.
- 8:57Speaker 10: Ann, I still got the ring.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Hod, please.
- 9:01Speaker 10: Now, keep your feathers down. I just meant that the
- 9:03Speaker 10: fellow wouldn't take it back. Guess I'm stuck with it.
- 9:08Speaker 10: Unless I can find somebody else.
- 9:10Speaker 16: Oh?
- 9:12Speaker 10: Haven't changed your mind, have you?
- 9:14Speaker 4: Have you changed yours?
- 9:16Speaker 10: You know I wouldn't be any good with that job
- 9:18Speaker 10: in town. I'm just a lobsterman. I'll never be anything else.
- 9:23Speaker 10: You know that.
- 9:24Speaker 4: You could be anything you wanted to be.
- 9:28Speaker 10: All right, Ann. I'll do it.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Do what?
- 9:32Speaker 10: I'll take that job in Portland. It might be a
- 9:35Speaker 10: little rough for a while, but I think we can
- 9:37Speaker 10: work it out. Don't you?
- 9:38Speaker 4: No, Hod. No, I don't. It would never work. And
- 9:42Speaker 4: it wasn't fair of me to ever ask you.
- 9:43Speaker 10: One minute, just say one thing, and I try to
- 9:46Speaker 10: do what you want me to, Wendy. I know.
- 9:47Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Hod. You've got what you want here, haven't you?
- 9:51Speaker 4: Your own house, your own island, your own boat. You
- 9:54Speaker 4: wouldn't be happy anywhere else. And after a while, I
- 9:58Speaker 4: guess I wouldn't be happy either.
- 10:00Speaker 10: We'd have each other. That way we could work anything out.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Could we? Marriage is something that has to last. What
- 10:07Speaker 4: would it be like in five years? Ten years?
- 10:10Speaker 10: Look here. I love you. And you love me. Don't you?
- 10:16Speaker 10: I know you do.
- 10:18Speaker 4: You're not being fair. We came here as friends. Can't
- 10:22Speaker 4: we let it go like that?
- 10:23Speaker 7: No.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Hod, please, just give me time to think. Please give
- 10:27Speaker 4: me time.
- 10:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 10: Sure. Well, we've discussed the weather. Now, what about your job?
- 10:36Speaker 10: What's this about working tomorrow?
- 10:37Speaker 4: It's that boy I told you about, Donnie Mitchell.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I've got to make out the report for the office.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And you?
- 10:42Speaker 10: I think I'll go duck hunting. Joe says he saw
- 10:45Speaker 10: some ducks over on the island. Say, maybe you'll be
- 10:47Speaker 10: finished in time to come along with us.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Thanks, Hod, but I... I don't think so.
- 10:51Speaker 10: Okay.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Now, come on.
- 10:53Speaker 10: Let's get out of.
- 10:56Speaker 7: Here.
- 11:05Speaker 10: Hey, how's the duck hunting?
- 11:07Speaker 13: They're all gone now. I knew somebody'd scare them off.
- 11:11Speaker 8: I've been watching you.
- 11:12Speaker 10: That was tough luck. But you did a good job
- 11:15Speaker 10: of hunting.
- 11:15Speaker 13: What'd you scare them for?
- 11:17Speaker 10: Now, wait a minute. Don't hang it on to me.
- 11:18Speaker 10: They were just feeding out. Maybe they'll come back.
- 11:21Speaker 13: Not a good that'll do me. I only had two shells.
- 11:25Speaker 13: This your island?
- 11:26Speaker 10: Yeah. Oh, don't worry. You're welcome to come here. Aren't
- 11:30Speaker 10: you the new fellow at Mary McKay's?
- 11:33Speaker 13: Yeah, the state kid.
- 11:34Speaker 10: I'm a hard still well. How'd you get over here?
- 11:37Speaker 13: Rode out in a skiff.
- 11:40Speaker 10: How'd you learn to handle a gun like that?
- 11:42Speaker 13: Uncle My taught me. He used to take me gunning.
- 11:44Speaker 10: Uncle My? Well, it wouldn't be Captain My Mitchell. It
- 11:47Speaker 10: used to be down to Port Clyde, would it?
- 11:48Speaker 17: What if it is?
- 11:50Speaker 10: Oh, nothing. I just mentioned it.
- 11:52Speaker 13: My name's Mitchell, too. Donnie Mitchell.
- 11:54Speaker 10: I thought there might be a connection. You know, I
- 11:56Speaker 10: went to the banks a couple of seasons with Captain My.
- 11:58Speaker 8: You did?
- 11:59Speaker 10: Some years ago.
- 12:00Speaker 6: I knew your pa, too.
- 12:02Speaker 10: Say, he was a pretty good man with a gun,
- 12:04Speaker 10: wasn't he?
- 12:04Speaker 13: Uncle My said my pa's one of the finest shots
- 12:06Speaker 13: in the county. I tried to tell Farmer Elkins that.
- 12:09Speaker 13: I guess nobody recollects my pa no more.
- 12:11Speaker 10: Now, where'd you get an idea like that? Plenty of
- 12:13Speaker 10: people around here remember your pa. You ought to talk
- 12:16Speaker 10: to my partner, Joe Sanger. He and your pa were
- 12:18Speaker 10: shipmates once.
- 12:19Speaker 13: Sanger? Oh, Portuguese, huh?
- 12:22Speaker 10: Yeah, why?
- 12:23Speaker 13: I don't like Portuguese.
- 12:25Speaker 10: Oh, now, listen, kid. Your pa or your Uncle Ma either,
- 12:29Speaker 10: they wouldn't let anybody tell them about a fella. They
- 12:32Speaker 10: always went and found out for themselves.
- 12:34Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 12:34Speaker 13: Well, I gotta be going. I got some chores to do.
- 12:37Speaker 10: Time you roll back to the mainland gonna be kind
- 12:40Speaker 10: of late for chores, isn't it?
- 12:41Speaker 13: What chores can wait? I ain't a dog and I
- 12:43Speaker 13: ain't a horse.
- 12:44Speaker 10: Now, hold on, hold on. Here. I got a couple
- 12:47Speaker 10: of nice ducks here. You can use them.
- 12:50Speaker 13: What do you want for him?
- 12:52Speaker 10: Nothing. I just thought maybe Mrs. McKay wouldn't worry so
- 12:57Speaker 10: much about the chores if, well, a couple of nice
- 13:00Speaker 10: birds are a couple of nice birds.
- 13:02Speaker 13: Okay, I'll take him. Well, I'll be seeing you.
- 13:05Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 13: Oh, and thank you.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Come back again sometime.
- 13:08Speaker 10: We'll talk about your poor and your Uncle Moy. Sure.
- 13:11Speaker 13: And thanks again.
- 13:13Speaker 7: ¶ ¶.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Come in, Ann. Thank goodness you got here.
- 13:22Speaker 4: The office gave me the message when I phoned in.
- 13:24Speaker 4: What is it, Mrs. McKay?
- 13:25Speaker 12: What's the trouble?
- 13:25Speaker 4: Trouble?
- 13:26Speaker 5: It's Donnie. Gone since morning, and here it is an
- 13:28Speaker 5: hour past suppertime.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Maybe he went duck hunting again.
- 13:30Speaker 5: No, he couldn't have. I loaned my shotgun to old
- 13:32Speaker 5: man Peters.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Well, didn't he say anything or do anything?
- 13:35Speaker 5: Oh, I scolded him for dilly-dallying with the firewood this morning.
- 13:38Speaker 5: Then when I went out to call him for dinner,
- 13:40Speaker 5: there was the wood saw broke clean in two and
- 13:41Speaker 5: him gone.
- 13:42Speaker 4: You don't suppose something's happened to him?
- 13:44Speaker 5: I've supposed everything. When he didn't come in for dinner,
- 13:46Speaker 5: I thought, sure, he'd made my supper. If it's all
- 13:48Speaker 5: right with you, Ann, I'm going to call the state troopers.
- 13:55Speaker 8: There's our lobster float, Hod. I shut off the engine.
- 13:58Speaker 6: Shut her off.
- 13:59Speaker 8: Hey, what's that by the float? Somebody skiffed?
- 14:02Speaker 17: Huh?
- 14:04Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 14:04Speaker 10: It must have drifted out from the mainland. Pick it
- 14:06Speaker 10: up with the boat hook.
- 14:07Speaker 8: I wonder how that happened.
- 14:08Speaker 10: I don't know. Oh, let it go for now. We'll
- 14:10Speaker 10: pick it up after we unload. We got anything left
- 14:13Speaker 10: in this float?
- 14:14Speaker 8: I look. I think we leave a few lobsters.
- 14:16Speaker 6: From last time.
- 14:17Speaker 10: We'll take the skiff to the mainland first time we
- 14:19Speaker 10: go in. Find out who lost it.
- 14:20Speaker 8: Okay. Let's go, Hod. Give me the catch. I put
- 14:23Speaker 8: him in the float. Santa Maria, what do we got here?
- 14:27Speaker 10: What you talking about?
- 14:28Speaker 8: In the float. Yo, kiddo, what are you doing in there?
- 14:31Speaker 10: Donnie!
- 14:32Speaker 8: Holy smoke.
- 14:33Speaker 10: You crazy kid. It's a good thing those lobsters are
- 14:36Speaker 10: plugged or we'd be hauling you out in pieces. What
- 14:39Speaker 10: were you doing in there?
- 14:41Speaker 13: Only wanted a couple of old lobsters.
- 14:44Speaker 10: Oh, I see. Get in the boat. In this country, boy,
- 14:49Speaker 10: lobsters are a man's living. You don't rob his pots
- 14:52Speaker 10: and you don't rob his floats.
- 14:54Speaker 13: I didn't know it was yours.
- 14:55Speaker 10: That only makes it worse. A man looks out for
- 14:57Speaker 10: his enemies, but his friends... You know, a man doing
- 15:00Speaker 10: that would be sent to jail if he was lucky.
- 15:02Speaker 10: A kid like you would be sent to reform school.
- 15:04Speaker 8: How do you like this kid?
- 15:05Speaker 10: What would your Uncle My have done if he'd have
- 15:07Speaker 10: caught you doing this?
- 15:08Speaker 13: Well, tarnation on me, I guess.
- 15:10Speaker 10: That's just what you need, a good thrashing.
- 15:12Speaker 13: Go on, whip me if you want to.
- 15:14Speaker 10: I wouldn't lay a hand on you. But I'm going
- 15:16Speaker 10: to do the next best thing. Now get on the boat.
- 15:19Speaker 10: Get on, get aboard.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Just don't stand there. Where have you been? I said,
- 15:30Speaker 5: where have you been?
- 15:31Speaker 10: He's been with me, Mary.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Well, that's small comfort. Well, come in. We've even got
- 15:36Speaker 5: the state police looking for you.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Johnny, you're smoking wet.
- 15:39Speaker 10: Hello, Ann. Yeah, he's wet. He had a little accident.
- 15:43Speaker 10: He fell in the water. That's a sure way to
- 15:44Speaker 10: get wet.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Well, I'd better call the police and tell them he's safe.
- 15:47Speaker 5: As for you, young man, you kite yourself upstairs and
- 15:49Speaker 5: get out of those clothes before you catch pneumonia.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Go on, now, get.
- 15:52Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am.
- 15:53Speaker 10: Lots of problems to raising a child, aren't they, Mary?
- 15:55Speaker 14: Child?
- 15:56Speaker 5: He's got the brain of a giant. He can think
- 15:57Speaker 5: of more ways to devil a person.
- 15:59Speaker 10: No, he wasn't trying to devil you, Mary. He's afraid.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Afraid of what?
- 16:03Speaker 10: Afraid of you. He told me the whole story about
- 16:07Speaker 10: breaking that saw. He told me it was an accident.
- 16:10Speaker 10: I believe it was.
- 16:11Speaker 9: Well?
- 16:12Speaker 10: Well, he stayed away all day because he was just
- 16:14Speaker 10: plain afraid to face up and tell you about it.
- 16:16Speaker 5: It was only a saw.
- 16:17Speaker 10: I know, but I guess it seemed pretty important to him.
- 16:21Speaker 10: He's awfully sensitive, Mary. He hasn't had things very easy.
- 16:26Speaker 10: Takes patience with a kid like that.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Well, patience ain't my long suit. With kids, I don't
- 16:31Speaker 5: want to hit them or lick or put my arms
- 16:32Speaker 5: around them. He hasn't had any supper now, has he?
- 16:35Speaker 10: Come to think of it, neither have I.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Well, no more trouble for two.
- 16:37Speaker 6: And for one.
- 16:38Speaker 8: Come on in the kitchen.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Well, now that everything's all right again... Think I'll be
- 16:41Speaker 4: driving back.
- 16:42Speaker 17: To the airport.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry I dragged you down here for nothing,
- 16:44Speaker 5: but thanks, Ann.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Good night.
- 16:45Speaker 10: Night. Do you have to go back right away?
- 16:49Speaker 4: Well, it's a long drive.
- 16:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 16:51Speaker 10: Well, I'll walk out.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Well, you told her goodbye quick enough.
- 17:02Speaker 10: Too quick.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Looks like it was successful, though.
- 17:05Speaker 7: Hmm?
- 17:07Speaker 5: That's lipstick, ain't it? When's the wedding? Oh.
- 17:10Speaker 10: Nothing like asking, is there?
- 17:12Speaker 7: No.
- 17:12Speaker 10: I'm afraid there isn't going to be a wedding. I
- 17:16Speaker 10: guess Ann just doesn't want to marry a lobster.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Smart girl, maybe. What you looking for in my cupboards?
- 17:23Speaker 14: Dandelion wine.
- 17:24Speaker 10: Did you make any this year?
- 17:26Speaker 5: Of course not. Get out of there.
- 17:27Speaker 14: Okay, okay.
- 17:29Speaker 10: You let a man come in out of a cold
- 17:30Speaker 10: night and not give him anything?
- 17:31Speaker 8: Oh, go take it.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Second shelf from the top. But not for me.
- 17:34Speaker 10: Of course not. Think I want the ladies to eat
- 17:35Speaker 10: after me? Mary... You're not letting Donnie worry you, are you?
- 17:42Speaker 5: Why would he worry me? He's just as nice and
- 17:44Speaker 5: quiet as a three-year-old bull.
- 17:48Speaker 10: Takes a lot of handling. That kid's had a tough
- 17:51Speaker 10: road to hoe.
- 17:51Speaker 5: So has everybody else. Life's no clam bake.
- 17:55Speaker 10: Hey, you know, I could use that boy on my
- 17:57Speaker 10: boat on Saturdays. Pay him two bits an hour.
- 18:00Speaker 5: Cute, aren't you? You and him cook this up together?
- 18:03Speaker 10: No, I just thought of it. Not a bad idea, either.
- 18:06Speaker 10: He might make enough to pay for that saw.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Oh, who said anything about paying for a saw?
- 18:10Speaker 1: Donny?
- 18:10Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am?
- 18:11Speaker 5: Come right down now. Supper's about ready.
- 18:13Speaker 10: Well, if he's coming with us on Saturday, you'll have
- 18:15Speaker 10: to have him up early. We leave around five.
- 18:17Speaker 6: All right, all right.
- 18:18Speaker 5: He'll be on time.
- 18:31Speaker 10: Well, kid, how do you like lobstering?
- 18:32Speaker 13: I sure like it fine, hon.
- 18:34Speaker 8: Some business.
- 18:35Speaker 15: Wake up in the middle of the night, break your
- 18:37Speaker 15: back all day. Hey, kid, are you lobstering or fishing?
- 18:40Speaker 13: Well, hon said I could fish for a while.
- 18:42Speaker 10: Think you'll be able to go with us again next week, Donnie?
- 18:44Speaker 14: Oh, sure.
- 18:46Speaker 10: You've got a lot of chores to do for Mrs. McKay.
- 18:48Speaker 10: A lot of wood to chop.
- 18:50Speaker 13: I'll chop it on us.
- 18:51Speaker 14: It might be a.
- 18:52Speaker 10: Little tough with only an axe. Now that you've busted
- 18:54Speaker 10: the saw.
- 18:55Speaker 13: Yeah, but I'll do it.
- 18:56Speaker 8: Well, here's the trap. Six lobster, hon. Pretty good size.
- 19:00Speaker 10: All right, bait up the box and throw it back in.
- 19:02Speaker 6: Bait.
- 19:04Speaker 15: I'm going to get me a farm someday so far
- 19:07Speaker 15: away from this ocean.
- 19:07Speaker 8: I never smell bait again. I go to Connecticut. You
- 19:10Speaker 8: wait and see.
- 19:11Speaker 10: Doesn't it smell in Connecticut?
- 19:13Speaker 7: No.
- 19:13Speaker 8: Nobody smell in Connecticut.
- 19:14Speaker 10: All right, pull up your line, Donnie. We've got to
- 19:16Speaker 10: move out.
- 19:16Speaker 14: Fish!
- 19:17Speaker 5: Fish!
- 19:18Speaker 13: I got a fish!
- 19:19Speaker 8: Hey, get back in the boat. Where do you think
- 19:20Speaker 8: you're going? Hey, I think he's got something. Maybe a whale.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Hold on to him, Donnie.
- 19:24Speaker 10: Bring him in.
- 19:25Speaker 13: I'm trying to right now.
- 19:28Speaker 8: He's pulling off.
- 19:29Speaker 10: That's it.
- 19:29Speaker 6: Keep him coming.
- 19:30Speaker 10: Well, let him get any slack on your line.
- 19:32Speaker 6: That's it.
- 19:33Speaker 9: Fight!
- 19:34Speaker 10: Say, you have got a fish, haven't you?
- 19:37Speaker 13: What could it be, Hart?
- 19:38Speaker 10: We'll find out. Need any help?
- 19:40Speaker 7: No.
- 19:42Speaker 13: I can get him.
- 19:43Speaker 5: I hope.
- 19:44Speaker 8: Shark, maybe, huh?
- 19:45Speaker 10: No, I don't think so. He's running more like a halibut.
- 19:47Speaker 13: He won't give.
- 19:48Speaker 6: Keep at him, Donnie. Keep him coming.
- 19:50Speaker 13: Can you see him yet?
- 19:51Speaker 14: Wait a minute.
- 19:52Speaker 10: Wait a minute.
- 19:53Speaker 8: There he is.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Holy smoke, it is a halibut. Big as Hazler's Rock.
- 19:57Speaker 8: Santa Maria, some halibuts. Hold him, Kiro. I get the gut.
- 20:00Speaker 15: This fish you do not lose.
- 20:10Speaker 6: Well, here's your money, Hard.
- 20:12Speaker 11: The lobsters plus the halibut.
- 20:14Speaker 7: $ 57.
- 20:14Speaker 16: 08.
- 20:14Speaker 6: Pretty good day.
- 20:15Speaker 10: Not bad. Mighty fine halibut. Don't know no other fighting.
- 20:19Speaker 10: That depends on who's fishing for them. I want you
- 20:21Speaker 10: to meet the chap, Donnie Mitchell. Well, now, that's some fish, Don.
- 20:24Speaker 6: Mitchell, huh?
- 20:25Speaker 9: You don't happen to be no relation of old Captain
- 20:27Speaker 9: My Mitchell or Johnny Mitchell now, would you?
- 20:29Speaker 13: Captain My was my uncle, and John, he was my pa.
- 20:33Speaker 9: You don't say.
- 20:34Speaker 10: Well, now, no wonder you're a fisherman. Well, is this here, Donnie?
- 20:38Speaker 10: Two bits an hour, that's a buck and a quarter.
- 20:40Speaker 10: Four and a half for the fish.
- 20:43Speaker 7: $ 5. 75.
- 20:43Speaker 10: Cash on the barrel head.
- 20:45Speaker 13: Gosh, I never earned that much, hon. I had too
- 20:49Speaker 13: good of a time.
- 20:51Speaker 6: A lot of money, son.
- 20:52Speaker 9: What do you aim to buy with it?
- 20:53Speaker 13: I'm going to buy me a brand new... A brand
- 20:56Speaker 13: new saw.
- 20:57Speaker 8: Hey, hon, somebody's there on the other side of the dock.
- 21:00Speaker 9: Huh?
- 21:01Speaker 1: Oh.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Miss Ann, look.
- 21:02Speaker 13: Look at the fish I caught. Oh, hello.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Who did you say caught that fish?
- 21:07Speaker 8: The kiddo, all by himself. We don't give him no help,
- 21:09Speaker 8: not even one little bit.
- 21:11Speaker 13: It's a halibut, and look what I got, $ 5. 75. Say,
- 21:14Speaker 13: I think I'll take up fishing.
- 21:17Speaker 10: That's not a bad idea. I could use another hand,
- 21:19Speaker 10: provided you can cook better than Joe.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Oh, you'd better let well enough alone.
- 21:23Speaker 15: You keep away from lobster boats, me son. Buy yourself
- 21:26Speaker 15: a farm-raised potatoes.
- 21:27Speaker 13: Will you go fishing with us next Saturday?
- 21:29Speaker 4: Oh, think about it, Donnie. Look, I'll drive you home.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Now get in my car and wait for me.
- 21:34Speaker 13: But I've got to help Joe wash down the deck.
- 21:35Speaker 4: I think Joe can manage alone.
- 21:37Speaker 10: No, I think maybe Donnie had better go and get.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Look, Donnie, I want to talk to Hod. Now go
- 21:41Speaker 4: up there and wait for me.
- 21:42Speaker 13: Yes, ma'am, I'll go.
- 21:45Speaker 10: Ann, I wish you hadn't done that.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Done what?
- 21:49Speaker 10: The kid's just had the biggest time of his life.
- 21:51Speaker 10: You took some of the edge off it for him.
- 21:53Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Hod, but that's what I wanted to talk
- 21:55Speaker 4: to you about. You shouldn't have taken him out with you.
- 21:58Speaker 8: Well, why not?
- 21:59Speaker 4: A boat out there in the open sea... What if
- 22:01Speaker 4: something happened to him?
- 22:03Speaker 10: Well, if you want to look at it like that,
- 22:04Speaker 10: he could fall down in the backyard and break his neck.
- 22:06Speaker 10: Just going out on a boat doesn't mean you... Don't
- 22:08Speaker 10: tell me about.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Boats in the sea. I was raised here, too. Half
- 22:10Speaker 4: the people in this town have lost somebody at sea.
- 22:12Speaker 10: Oh, I know, Ann, but you.
- 22:13Speaker 4: You know, but do you really know? You go out there.
- 22:16Speaker 4: But what about the women who sit at home and
- 22:18Speaker 4: wait and watch and pray? Ask them if there's any
- 22:21Speaker 4: danger out there.
- 22:22Speaker 10: Are you talking about Donnie or about yourself?
- 22:24Speaker 4: I'm talking about my responsibility. If something happened to Donnie,
- 22:28Speaker 4: I'd never forgive myself.
- 22:31Speaker 10: Well, suppose he wants to go with us again. And
- 22:34Speaker 10: suppose I want to take him.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Then you'll force me to move him somewhere else.
- 22:38Speaker 11: Anne.
- 22:38Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Hod, but that's the way it's got to be.
- 22:41Speaker 10: Well, suppose we talk about it later, huh? Tonight, maybe. No, Hod.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Not tonight or any other time.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Anne.
- 22:47Speaker 8: Go after her, Hod. I clean up everything.
- 22:51Speaker 10: Well, I'm through going after her, Charles. Well, I guess
- 22:57Speaker 10: that's that.
- 23:10Speaker 9: In just a moment, we'll continue with Act II of
- 23:13Speaker 9: Deep Waters. What's the new fashion in Hollywood, Libby?
- 23:17Speaker 16: Well, it wouldn't surprise me if Loretta Young and Celeste
- 23:20Speaker 16: Holmes set a fashion for personal charm that doesn't depend
- 23:25Speaker 16: on glamorous clothes. In their picture, Come to the Stable,
- 23:29Speaker 16: they wear nuns' habits throughout. And yet they're so human
- 23:33Speaker 16: and delightful, they make even a racetrack tycoon contribute to
- 23:36Speaker 16: their pet charity.
- 23:37Speaker 9: What amazed me was the championship tennis Celeste played in
- 23:40Speaker 9: her nun's habit.
- 23:41Speaker 16: Did you notice that 20th Century Fox planned an especially
- 23:44Speaker 16: smart wardrobe for Dorothy Patrick? For contrast didn't come to
- 23:48Speaker 16: the staple. Dorothy likes seamless nylon, so the studio ordered
- 23:52Speaker 16: super sheer ones for her.
- 23:54Speaker 10: Mmm, the bare leg look, eh?
- 23:55Speaker 16: Mm-hmm, but much sleeker and trimmer than really bare legs
- 23:59Speaker 16: ever look. Naturally, her nylons were luxed after every wearing
- 24:04Speaker 16: to keep their fit and make them last longer.
- 24:06Speaker 9: You don't catch Hollywood studios or smart girls anywhere taking
- 24:11Speaker 9: risks with nylons. They've discovered that Luxe Flakes cut down
- 24:15Speaker 9: needless runs. In fact, make all kinds of stockings last
- 24:19Speaker 9: twice as long.
- 24:20Speaker 16: Strain tests prove that. Using strong soaps or rubbing with
- 24:24Speaker 16: cake soap really does make runs come sooner. But gentle
- 24:29Speaker 16: Luxe Flakes care actually gives you twice the wear. That's
- 24:33Speaker 16: just like getting two pair of nylons every time.
- 24:35Speaker 3: You buy a pair.
- 24:36Speaker 9: And extra glamour. It's no wonder so many of Hollywood's
- 24:40Speaker 9: famous legs wear nylons washed with luxe flakes.
- 24:44Speaker 16: Any girl can give her stockings this same wonderful, safe care.
- 24:49Speaker 4: It's easy.
- 24:50Speaker 16: These tiny diamonds of luxe burst into thick, creamy suds
- 24:53Speaker 16: in a flash. Whisk away soil almost like magic. Make
- 24:58Speaker 16: stockings wear and wear. And what a help that is
- 25:02Speaker 16: to the budget.
- 25:03Speaker 10: We return you to William Keeley.
- 25:05Speaker 11: The curtain rises on the second act of Deep Waters,
- 25:08Speaker 11: starring Dana Andrews as Hod, Donna Reed as Anne, and
- 25:12Speaker 11: Anne Revere as Mary. It's the following morning, and the
- 25:25Speaker 11: lobster boat's tied up on Hod Stillwell's island.
- 25:29Speaker 6: On the rickety dock, Joe's.
- 25:30Speaker 11: Mending the traps, but well aware of his approaching visitors.
- 25:35Speaker 8: Hello, kiddo.
- 25:36Speaker 14: How are you?
- 25:37Speaker 13: I'm fine.
- 25:39Speaker 8: Hey, how come you row way out over here? How
- 25:42Speaker 8: come you're not in church, yeah?
- 25:43Speaker 13: How come you ain't?
- 25:45Speaker 11: Me?
- 25:45Speaker 8: Six o'clock I am there. Don't you worry about Joe.
- 25:48Speaker 13: Church doesn't start till ten.
- 25:50Speaker 8: What do you mean?
- 25:51Speaker 15: We got six o'clock mass, seven o'clock mass, eight o'clock.
- 25:54Speaker 8: We got plenty mass.
- 25:56Speaker 13: Oh, the other church, huh? What you doing, Joe?
- 26:00Speaker 15: Oh, fixing up the lobster traps. All the time, got
- 26:03Speaker 15: to fix up the traps. You take Joe's advice, kiddo.
- 26:06Speaker 15: You want to be a fisherman? Don't do it. You
- 26:09Speaker 15: get yourself a nice farm.
- 26:11Speaker 10: Come here.
- 26:12Speaker 8: You see this magazine?
- 26:14Speaker 1: I show you something.
- 26:15Speaker 8: You see this?
- 26:15Speaker 4: Huh?
- 26:16Speaker 1: Oh.
- 26:18Speaker 13: Ray's Mix.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Minks?
- 26:21Speaker 15: That's what it says, don't it? Find fortune in fabulous furs.
- 26:26Speaker 8: Something, huh?
- 26:27Speaker 13: I'd rather fish.
- 26:28Speaker 15: You don't read what it says. This fella here, he
- 26:31Speaker 15: sell you mama mink and papa mink.
- 26:33Speaker 8: For $ 100.
- 26:33Speaker 13: I like fishing better.
- 26:36Speaker 8: Okay, now look.
- 26:37Speaker 15: When baby mink grow up, they make coat. See, like
- 26:40Speaker 15: coat on pretty girl in the magazine.
- 26:42Speaker 13: I don't like girls.
- 26:44Speaker 8: Okay, don't look at the girl. Just look at the coat.
- 26:47Speaker 8: You know how much that coat cost?
- 26:49Speaker 15: $ 6, 000, he says.
- 26:51Speaker 6: Think of that.
- 26:52Speaker 13: Gee, that's more than a lobster boat.
- 26:54Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, you betcha.
- 26:55Speaker 15: Don't be surprised if one day Joe is a very
- 26:58Speaker 15: rich mink man.
- 26:59Speaker 7: Joe.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Oh, hi, Hod.
- 27:01Speaker 14: Oh, hello, Donnie.
- 27:03Speaker 10: Other pets coming, Joe?
- 27:04Speaker 8: They're coming.
- 27:05Speaker 13: That's a mighty fine house you got.
- 27:06Speaker 11: There, Hod.
- 27:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 27:09Speaker 10: Hey, Joe, come on, step on up.
- 27:10Speaker 13: Hod, I got something to ask you.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Well?
- 27:14Speaker 13: Well, I figured that... Well, I just thought... Well, look,
- 27:20Speaker 13: you and Joe live in here alone.
- 27:22Speaker 5: I figure.
- 27:22Speaker 10: Figure what?
- 27:24Speaker 13: Well, was I here every day, I could do the
- 27:26Speaker 13: chores for you and work for you on the boat
- 27:27Speaker 13: every day.
- 27:28Speaker 10: Move in with us?
- 27:30Speaker 13: Well, yeah, sure.
- 27:33Speaker 10: Sorry, Donnie, I couldn't do that.
- 27:34Speaker 13: Well, Mrs. McKay wouldn't mind. I already paid her for
- 27:36Speaker 13: the saw.
- 27:37Speaker 7: All right.
- 27:38Speaker 10: I'm sorry. I just couldn't do it. Here, Joe, I'll
- 27:40Speaker 10: give you a hand.
- 27:41Speaker 13: School's out in a couple weeks. Could I work for
- 27:43Speaker 13: you steady all summer?
- 27:44Speaker 8: Hey, that's a good idea.
- 27:46Speaker 10: Never mind the idea. Let's go, Joe. We're going out.
- 27:49Speaker 10: I'm sorry, Donnie.
- 27:50Speaker 6: Gone are not lobsters.
- 27:52Speaker 10: You heard me.
- 27:53Speaker 13: Wasn't I all right yesterday? Yesterday, you said I was
- 27:58Speaker 13: your partner.
- 27:59Speaker 10: Oh, that was yesterday, kid. Something's happened. We'll have to
- 28:04Speaker 10: break up the partnership. Lobsters aren't running so good these days.
- 28:07Speaker 10: They've got to cut down.
- 28:09Speaker 13: I'll bet that Miss Freeman. I'll bet that she did.
- 28:11Speaker 10: No, she had nothing to do with it. Free that
- 28:13Speaker 10: stern line, Joe. Let's shove off.
- 28:14Speaker 8: I'm sorry, Kiro. Besides, Minx is much better.
- 28:18Speaker 14: Believe me.
- 28:21Speaker 13: They don't want me either.
- 28:24Speaker 14: Okay, I'll get out of here.
- 28:26Speaker 13: I'll run away again.
- 28:35Speaker 5: Well, here's Donnie's birthday cake, Ann. Think it'll do? Will
- 28:38Speaker 5: it do? It's beautiful, Mrs.
- 28:39Speaker 8: McKay.
- 28:40Speaker 4: You sure Donnie doesn't suspect anything?
- 28:42Speaker 5: This isn't the first surprise party I've handled. You stop
- 28:45Speaker 5: in at the drugstore?
- 28:46Speaker 4: They'll deliver the ice cream at 4 o'clock.
- 28:47Speaker 10: Good.
- 28:48Speaker 5: I told Donnie to go straight from school to the shoemaker's.
- 28:51Speaker 5: The shoemaker's going to keep him there till 5. By
- 28:53Speaker 5: the time he gets home, all the kids will be here.
- 28:54Speaker 4: He probably hasn't had a birthday party in years. You've
- 28:58Speaker 4: been wonderful with him, Mrs.
- 28:59Speaker 8: McKay.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Oh, you stop that nonsense and help me wrap his presents.
- 29:02Speaker 5: The wind's blowing up air and looks to me like
- 29:04Speaker 5: we're going to a storm.
- 29:09Speaker 14: Hello, son.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Something you want?
- 29:11Speaker 14: Huh?
- 29:13Speaker 13: Oh, no, I'm just looking. Uh, this is where the
- 29:17Speaker 13: bus stops, huh? It stops here at the drugstore?
- 29:20Speaker 1: That's right. Schedule's right there on the wall. Figuring on traveling?
- 29:24Speaker 4: A lady waiting for a prescription, Mr.
- 29:26Speaker 11: Martin.
- 29:26Speaker 10: Oh, I'm coming, I'm coming.
- 29:29Speaker 13: Boston, $ 7.
- 29:31Speaker 4: 50.
- 29:31Speaker 13: They never find me in Boston. But the money, I
- 29:37Speaker 13: gotta get it. I just gotta get it.
- 29:40Speaker 1: It.
- 29:49Speaker 14: Yes, sir.
- 29:50Speaker 1: What can I do for you? I.
- 29:52Speaker 13: I got something to sell.
- 29:53Speaker 10: We buy, sell, and trade anything, son.
- 29:56Speaker 6: Best little swap shop in the county.
- 29:58Speaker 14: This, uh.
- 29:59Speaker 13: This camera.
- 30:00Speaker 10: Huh? Let me see that. Looks like brand new to me.
- 30:04Speaker 13: It's not new. I mean, I ain't ever used it.
- 30:07Speaker 13: It just looks like new.
- 30:09Speaker 14: You see something you want to trade for it?
- 30:10Speaker 13: I want to sell it for $ 7.
- 30:11Speaker 4: 50.
- 30:11Speaker 17: But that's what they get for this sort of camera,
- 30:15Speaker 17: brand new.
- 30:15Speaker 11: Why, they got some just like this over in Martin's...
- 30:18Speaker 11: How much can I get?
- 30:19Speaker 10: Give you $ 4.
- 30:21Speaker 13: But I gotta have $ 7. 50.
- 30:22Speaker 8: Sorry, boy.
- 30:23Speaker 10: Couldn't come out on it at that price.
- 30:26Speaker 6: Okay.
- 30:27Speaker 13: I'll take four, then.
- 30:28Speaker 6: Here you are. One, two, three, four.
- 30:39Speaker 5: That you, Donnie?
- 30:40Speaker 1: Yes, ma'am.
- 30:41Speaker 5: You get my shoes?
- 30:43Speaker 13: The man said... He said they won't be ready till
- 30:46Speaker 13: 5 o'clock.
- 30:47Speaker 5: Well, you can get them tomorrow. Now, you go up
- 30:50Speaker 5: to your room and you study there till I call
- 30:51Speaker 5: you for supper. I don't want you going out anymore.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Now, what do we do? We'll never be able to
- 30:56Speaker 4: surprise him.
- 30:56Speaker 5: Oh, dret that shoemaker.
- 30:58Speaker 4: Oh, well, I'll go upstairs a little later and visit
- 31:00Speaker 4: with him. He won't think anything of my being here.
- 31:03Speaker 8: Fine day picks for his birthday.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Thunder and blowing a gale out there.
- 31:12Speaker 4: May I come in, Donnie? It's Anne Freeman, Donnie. I
- 31:15Speaker 4: just dropped by to see if you.
- 31:17Speaker 9: Donnie?
- 31:18Speaker 4: Donnie? Are you hiding, Donnie?
- 31:23Speaker 6: He isn't here, Mrs. McKay.
- 31:24Speaker 5: What do you mean he isn't there?
- 31:26Speaker 4: Well, he must have gone out after all. Maybe he
- 31:28Speaker 4: went for your shoes.
- 31:29Speaker 5: I told him to stay in his room. Maybe he's
- 31:31Speaker 5: up in the attic.
- 31:32Speaker 6: Donnie?
- 31:33Speaker 5: Donnie, where are you?
- 31:44Speaker 8: She's starting to blur somehow. I'm just as glad we're
- 31:47Speaker 8: heading for home.
- 31:48Speaker 10: Rain, Paul. It's really black over there by Hazlitt's Rock. Well,
- 31:53Speaker 10: let's head for the mooring.
- 31:55Speaker 6: Hey, wait a minute.
- 31:56Speaker 8: There's a boat out there. Ain't that Nick Driver's boat
- 31:59Speaker 8: any gone? Well, he ain't gone out, is he?
- 32:01Speaker 10: Nick Driver?
- 32:02Speaker 6: He's up in Portland.
- 32:03Speaker 8: Maybe so, but I see his boat. Give me the glasses.
- 32:06Speaker 6: Well, that's funny. I know Nick's up there. It's the kid.
- 32:08Speaker 10: It's Donnie.
- 32:09Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 32:09Speaker 10: What are we doing out here?
- 32:10Speaker 6: It's him, all right.
- 32:11Speaker 8: When I wave, he sees us and turns.
- 32:13Speaker 10: What, do you suppose he's looking for us?
- 32:15Speaker 8: Why does he turn, then? No, he's taking a joyride.
- 32:18Speaker 8: That kid is crazy about boats.
- 32:19Speaker 6: He's heading out to sea.
- 32:21Speaker 8: He's a funny kid. Don't even like me.
- 32:23Speaker 14: He can't handle that boat.
- 32:24Speaker 10: Not in that sea.
- 32:25Speaker 8: We go after him?
- 32:26Speaker 10: We'll have to.
- 32:27Speaker 7: Okay.
- 32:28Speaker 8: She's getting dark.
- 32:30Speaker 6: Open her up. No sight of him. I can't see him.
- 32:41Speaker 8: Turn on the spotlight. He's still there on the other
- 32:44Speaker 8: side of the swell.
- 32:45Speaker 6: Got it. Donny!
- 32:47Speaker 8: Save your breath. Too much sea, too much wind.
- 32:50Speaker 6: He's heading straight for Hasler's Rock.
- 32:51Speaker 8: Oh, the crazy kid.
- 32:52Speaker 6: He hasn't got a chance out there. Donny!
- 32:55Speaker 14: Hodge, look.
- 32:56Speaker 8: The boat, he turned over.
- 32:57Speaker 13: He's upside.
- 32:58Speaker 14: Grab a line.
- 32:58Speaker 10: Quick.
- 32:59Speaker 8: He's still there, Hodge. Hanging on to the boat.
- 33:01Speaker 6: Here, take the wheel. Swing this turn around as close
- 33:03Speaker 6: as you can to him. Don't let the sea take
- 33:05Speaker 6: you onto those rocks. I try, Hodge.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I try.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Stop swinging.
- 33:08Speaker 10: If we get close enough to throw him a line
- 33:10Speaker 10: before he's pulled under, we.
- 33:11Speaker 6: I'm not, Hodge.
- 33:11Speaker 1: He's awful rough.
- 33:12Speaker 8: Pull him around.
- 33:13Speaker 6: Broadside.
- 33:14Speaker 7: Broadside! Broadside!
- 33:15Speaker 5: Donny, we'll throw you a line.
- 33:18Speaker 13: Watch the wave, Hud.
- 33:19Speaker 10: I'm throwing a line, Donny.
- 33:22Speaker 7: Now.
- 33:23Speaker 8: You do good, Hud.
- 33:24Speaker 6: Good. Catch hold with both hands. Both hands.
- 33:29Speaker 8: We're going on the rocks, Hud.
- 33:31Speaker 6: Give him more gas.
- 33:31Speaker 8: Oh, we bust up for sure.
- 33:33Speaker 7: Hang on, Donny.
- 33:34Speaker 6: Bring it on. You got to hold.
- 33:37Speaker 7: Just another minute.
- 33:38Speaker 8: We're swamping, Hud. Another wave like that and.
- 33:41Speaker 6: Hang on to the wheel.
- 33:42Speaker 7: I got him.
- 33:48Speaker 8: Santa Maria.
- 33:50Speaker 6: How did we do that?
- 33:51Speaker 10: I don't know. We were born to be hung, I guess.
- 33:53Speaker 6: Hey, kiddo, how do you feel?
- 33:55Speaker 10: He'll be all right.
- 33:57Speaker 6: Just get us out of here.
- 34:07Speaker 4: He's coming, Mrs.
- 34:08Speaker 13: McKay.
- 34:08Speaker 5: Look out the window.
- 34:09Speaker 4: That's Donnie, all right.
- 34:11Speaker 5: With Hardin, Joe Sanger.
- 34:12Speaker 6: Yes.
- 34:13Speaker 5: And a fine birthday party. Well, let him in.
- 34:17Speaker 8: Hey, we brought you something.
- 34:19Speaker 5: Get in here, Donnie.
- 34:20Speaker 4: So, he was with you, huh?
- 34:22Speaker 10: Yeah, again.
- 34:23Speaker 4: He's drenched.
- 34:24Speaker 10: Drill in the water. Every time you do that, you
- 34:27Speaker 10: get wet. Surprise, surprise, surprise, surprise.
- 34:31Speaker 13: I don't get it.
- 34:32Speaker 5: It started out as a surprise party for your birthday.
- 34:36Speaker 1: For me?
- 34:37Speaker 4: Better get back to the dining room, kids. Donnie will
- 34:39Speaker 4: be there in a minute.
- 34:40Speaker 5: Only first he's got to get out of those clothes.
- 34:41Speaker 5: You heard me, Donnie, now. Upstairs before you get pneumonia.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Gosh, the party.
- 34:47Speaker 10: Well, this is quite a setting to walk into after
- 34:50Speaker 10: what's happened.
- 34:51Speaker 4: That's what I want to know. What has happened?
- 34:54Speaker 10: Well, I'm afraid he stole Nick Driver's boat. He capsized
- 35:00Speaker 10: off Haddon's Rock. Just a miracle he's here. He's trying
- 35:05Speaker 10: to run away.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Run away?
- 35:07Speaker 7: Where?
- 35:08Speaker 10: Oh, I don't know. Boston. Out of the state. What
- 35:10Speaker 10: difference does that make? The important thing is he'll keep
- 35:14Speaker 10: right on doing it unless something's done.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Like what?
- 35:17Speaker 10: Look, Ann. Donnie is a fisherman's kid. He's got fishing
- 35:21Speaker 10: in his blood. You bring him here to a fishing
- 35:24Speaker 10: town where all he sees is boats and then put
- 35:26Speaker 10: up a sign, keep off.
- 35:28Speaker 6: What do you expect him to do?
- 35:30Speaker 4: I told you that the welfare board holds me responsible.
- 35:33Speaker 4: It's my duty.
- 35:33Speaker 10: Yeah, I know you told me that. You told me
- 35:35Speaker 10: a lot of things. There's one thing you didn't tell
- 35:37Speaker 10: me or I was too stupid to see it.
- 35:39Speaker 14: You're afraid, Ann.
- 35:40Speaker 10: You're afraid of the sea.
- 35:42Speaker 6: Scared to death of it.
- 35:44Speaker 4: All right, suppose I am.
- 35:45Speaker 10: I'm sorry, Ann. I'm sorry to have to say it.
- 35:47Speaker 10: I know it's a terrible thing for you to fight,
- 35:49Speaker 10: but it's affecting other people's lives. It's affecting Donnie's life,
- 35:52Speaker 10: and that's not fair. This boy can go good or
- 35:55Speaker 10: he can go bad. It's up to you to make
- 35:57Speaker 10: the decision.
- 36:00Speaker 5: Well?
- 36:01Speaker 4: There's nothing more to be said, Hart.
- 36:03Speaker 10: Well, tell him happy birthday from me.
- 36:15Speaker 6: Hey, Hod, come here.
- 36:17Speaker 8: You look at this.
- 36:18Speaker 14: What's the matter?
- 36:21Speaker 10: Your rabbits sick?
- 36:22Speaker 1: Sick?
- 36:23Speaker 15: No, they're not sick, Hod. Three weeks ago, I bought
- 36:25Speaker 15: two rabbits like the magazine says. Make plenty money raising rabbits.
- 36:30Speaker 15: I build them fine house, everything.
- 36:32Speaker 10: Well, what's happened? You got a family?
- 36:34Speaker 15: That's the trouble. They don't do like the book says.
- 36:37Speaker 15: You think maybe Mama don't like Papa, huh?
- 36:40Speaker 10: How do I know? Maybe they're both named Charlie.
- 36:43Speaker 14: Oh, no, no.
- 36:44Speaker 8: This one's named Manuela. I name her myself. You think
- 36:46Speaker 8: maybe she don't... Hey, hi.
- 36:48Speaker 10: Hi, Donnie.
- 36:49Speaker 13: Miss McKay said it was all right for me to
- 36:50Speaker 13: come down and see you after school day. I told you,
- 36:53Speaker 13: Miss Ann said it was all right with the state
- 36:54Speaker 13: for me to work for you on the boat.
- 36:56Speaker 10: Well, I'm glad to hear that, Donnie.
- 36:57Speaker 13: You mean you'll let me work for you again?
- 37:00Speaker 10: Well, there's just one thing that's got to be settled first.
- 37:03Speaker 10: Nick Driver's boat. Who's going to pay for that?
- 37:06Speaker 13: That's okay, Hart. Miss McKay, she already paid him.
- 37:09Speaker 10: That's okay, huh? You think it's right for somebody else
- 37:13Speaker 10: to pay for your mistakes? Nick Driver put a lot
- 37:16Speaker 10: of store by that boat. If he'd reported it to
- 37:18Speaker 10: the police, you might have been sent to reform school.
- 37:20Speaker 13: But you'll take me on your boat and let me
- 37:22Speaker 13: work and.
- 37:23Speaker 10: Would you want a partner that didn't pay his debts?
- 37:25Speaker 13: But if you'll let me work Saturday until school's over,
- 37:28Speaker 13: then I can work for you every day and pay
- 37:30Speaker 13: back every cent of it. Honest, I will, Hart.
- 37:33Speaker 7: Well.
- 37:34Speaker 10: Oh, that sounds reasonable. Okay, start Saturday morning. Be here
- 37:38Speaker 10: at 5.30. Oh, thanks, Hot.
- 37:40Speaker 13: Gee, thanks. Oh, gosh, I better go now and tell
- 37:43Speaker 13: Miss McKay. Oh, hello, Joe.
- 37:44Speaker 5: So long.
- 37:45Speaker 6: Yes, so long.
- 37:47Speaker 8: This is terrible, Hot.
- 37:48Speaker 14: Terrible.
- 37:49Speaker 6: These rabbits.
- 37:49Speaker 10: Now what?
- 37:51Speaker 6: You're right, Hot.
- 37:52Speaker 8: They're both named Charlie.
- 37:53Speaker 17: Ha, ha, ha.
- 37:54Speaker 7: Ha, ha, ha. Ha, ha, ha.
- 37:58Speaker 9: Ha, ha, ha.
- 37:59Speaker 7: Ha, ha, ha. Mr.
- 38:03Speaker 13: McKay, I just saw Hart And he said I could
- 38:06Speaker 13: go to work for him He said I... Oh, I
- 38:09Speaker 13: didn't know you had company Hello.
- 38:11Speaker 5: Miss Freeman Donnie, wait Come here Ma'am?
- 38:17Speaker 4: Donnie, I don't know if you know these men or
- 38:19Speaker 4: not This is Mr. Harris from the sheriff's office And
- 38:22Speaker 4: this is Mr. Hopkins He says you sold him a
- 38:24Speaker 4: camera That's the boy, all right Did you, Donnie? Tell
- 38:28Speaker 4: me the truth Yes, ma'am Where did you get it, Donnie?
- 38:31Speaker 13: Martin's Drugstore.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Did Mr. Martin give it to you?
- 38:35Speaker 11: No.
- 38:35Speaker 10: You mean you just took the camera and then you
- 38:37Speaker 10: sold it to Mr. Hopkins here for $ 4?
- 38:39Speaker 6: Is that right?
- 38:40Speaker 13: Yes, sir.
- 38:41Speaker 5: Oh, Donnie, why?
- 38:43Speaker 6: Why?
- 38:43Speaker 13: Well, I was going to run away. The bus fare
- 38:47Speaker 13: to Boston was... Well, anyway, it wasn't enough. That's why
- 38:51Speaker 13: I took Mr. Driver's boat.
- 38:52Speaker 10: Well, I guess I'll have to take him to Bellport, Mrs.
- 38:54Speaker 14: McKay.
- 38:55Speaker 10: Turn him over to the juvenile authorities. I'm sorry for
- 38:58Speaker 10: both of you.
- 38:59Speaker 5: Oh, Donnie, look at me. I won't tell you not
- 39:02Speaker 5: to take this hard. It's bitter hard. Just as we
- 39:06Speaker 5: were beginning to understand each other.
- 39:08Speaker 4: He'll have to go?
- 39:09Speaker 10: You know he does, Miss Freeman.
- 39:11Speaker 4: I'll do all that I can to help you, Donnie.
- 39:14Speaker 4: Remember that.
- 39:15Speaker 13: Don't tell Hart.
- 39:17Speaker 4: But Hart'll want to help us.
- 39:19Speaker 13: Don't tell him, please. Promise you won't tell Hart.
- 39:23Speaker 4: I promise.
- 39:23Speaker 11: Don't tell him.
- 39:24Speaker 6: Don't tell him.
- 39:25Speaker 5: All right, Donnie. We won't tell Hod.
- 39:28Speaker 1: I promise.
- 39:29Speaker 10: Come along, son.
- 39:41Speaker 8: Hey, Hod, you stopped in the post office before.
- 39:43Speaker 14: Any mail?
- 39:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 39:45Speaker 10: I got a letter from the kid. He's out of town.
- 39:48Speaker 6: Donnie, out of town?
- 39:49Speaker 10: Yeah, he's in Ferriston.
- 39:50Speaker 8: What he says, Horton?
- 39:52Speaker 10: His writing looks more like chicken tracks, but he says
- 39:54Speaker 10: the state shifted him to a farm in Ferriston.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Shifted?
- 39:57Speaker 6: But why?
- 39:59Speaker 8: Well, so long as he's on farm, that is good.
- 40:01Speaker 8: Maybe he'll find a job for me.
- 40:03Speaker 10: Listen to this. I wanted you to know why I
- 40:05Speaker 10: couldn't be there on Saturday. It's kind of lonesome here
- 40:08Speaker 10: on the farm. I don't get to go out much.
- 40:11Speaker 10: Tell Joe hello.
- 40:12Speaker 8: Tell Joe hello.
- 40:13Speaker 6: That's good, yeah.
- 40:15Speaker 8: The kid is okay, huh?
- 40:16Speaker 10: I don't know. You know, it's funny. He's leaving like that.
- 40:22Speaker 10: And this address, Box 317 Ferriston. He doesn't even say
- 40:26Speaker 10: who he's with.
- 40:27Speaker 8: He's a kid. He don't think. Hey, where are you
- 40:30Speaker 8: taking us?
- 40:31Speaker 10: We're cutting around to the Cape. Let's head for Bellport.
- 40:35Speaker 6: Bellport?
- 40:35Speaker 10: Where do we do that? I want to find out something.
- 40:38Speaker 10: And I think maybe the answer.
- 40:39Speaker 6: Is in Bellport.
- 40:44Speaker 4: She's right in there, Mr. Stilwell.
- 40:46Speaker 13: You gotta call her, Ann.
- 40:47Speaker 4: Todd, what are you doing in Bellport?
- 40:50Speaker 10: I wanted to see you, Ann. Donnie was supposed to
- 40:53Speaker 10: come to work for me last Saturday, and he didn't
- 40:55Speaker 10: show up.
- 40:56Speaker 7: Oh?
- 40:57Speaker 4: Well, I know Mrs. McKay's gone to Portland for a while,
- 40:59Speaker 4: visiting her brother.
- 41:01Speaker 10: You'd think the kid would have said something if he
- 41:03Speaker 10: was going to leave town.
- 41:04Speaker 4: Maybe he just forgot.
- 41:06Speaker 10: I don't think so. You see, I got a letter
- 41:09Speaker 10: this morning from Donnie. He isn't in Portland. He says
- 41:12Speaker 10: he's on a farm outside Ferriston.
- 41:14Speaker 5: That's right, Hard.
- 41:15Speaker 14: He is.
- 41:15Speaker 10: Well, what's the mystery? Who's he staying with? I'd like
- 41:20Speaker 10: to see him.
- 41:21Speaker 4: He didn't tell you?
- 41:22Speaker 10: No. But you're responsible for him. You've told me that
- 41:25Speaker 10: often enough. So you must have put him there. Now,
- 41:28Speaker 10: where is he?
- 41:30Speaker 4: I can't tell you, Hard.
- 41:31Speaker 10: You can't? Or you won't?
- 41:34Speaker 4: I promised that I wouldn't.
- 41:35Speaker 10: Promised who? I thought when you decided to let Donnie
- 41:39Speaker 10: come and work for me on the boat that you'd
- 41:40Speaker 10: beaten this fear of yours. I guess you haven't. All right.
- 41:46Speaker 10: You said you'd take him away, so now you have.
- 41:47Speaker 4: Hod, I didn't. Please. You've got to believe me. That
- 41:50Speaker 4: had nothing to do with it.
- 41:51Speaker 10: Well, where is he, Ann?
- 41:52Speaker 4: I just can't tell you.
- 41:54Speaker 10: Okay. I'll have to find out my own way.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Hod, wait a minute. I know you don't believe me,
- 41:58Speaker 4: but I've told you everything I can. Now, I'm warning you.
- 42:01Speaker 4: If you keep on, you're only going to hurt the boy.
- 42:03Speaker 10: The kid's not happy where he is. I can tell
- 42:06Speaker 10: that from the letter. I'm going to find him, Ann,
- 42:07Speaker 10: and don't you try.
- 42:08Speaker 6: And stop me. Hod!
- 42:22Speaker 9: We pause now for station identification. This is CBS, the
- 42:26Speaker 9: Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 42:28Speaker 7: ¶ ¶.
- 42:47Speaker 11: After a brief intermission, our stars will return with Act
- 42:50Speaker 11: Three of Deep Waters. Tonight we have with us an
- 42:54Speaker 11: 18-year-old charmer, Miss Vera Miles, who was discovered by a
- 42:58Speaker 11: 20th Century Fox talent scout. By the way, Vera, I
- 43:01Speaker 11: understand you're quite a football fan. Which is your favorite team?
- 43:05Speaker 4: That depends on who takes me to the game, Mr.
- 43:07Speaker 14: Keeley.
- 43:07Speaker 6: Oh, I see.
- 43:08Speaker 4: I guess I have a special weakness for the underdog.
- 43:11Speaker 16: Like State College and Father was a fullback, Fred McMurray
- 43:15Speaker 16: is my favorite coach.
- 43:16Speaker 11: Yes, Maureen O'Hara, who plays his wife in that picture,
- 43:19Speaker 11: has my sympathy. She and Fred lead a very hectic
- 43:22Speaker 11: life when the alumni complain because their team is losing.
- 43:26Speaker 13: Aren't their daughters and father was a fullback darling?
- 43:29Speaker 4: Maureen and the girls look so natural in their sweaters
- 43:31Speaker 4: and skirts and always so well-groomed.
- 43:33Speaker 10: Naturally, Vera.
- 43:34Speaker 9: Maureen is a good housewife on the screen or off.
- 43:37Speaker 9: Her sweaters, like her other washable sports clothes, always get
- 43:40Speaker 9: Lux Flakes care.
- 43:42Speaker 4: I've really been amazed at the interest stars taking the
- 43:45Speaker 4: care of their personal wardrobes.
- 43:47Speaker 9: It's not so surprising, Vera, because Lux Flakes are the
- 43:50Speaker 9: favorite of smart girls everywhere, especially for sweaters at this
- 43:53Speaker 9: time of the year. Collied sweaters are such a long-term investment,
- 43:58Speaker 9: it's foolish to risk wrong washing methods that may spoil
- 44:01Speaker 9: the fit and make wool feel harsh and stiff. Wool
- 44:04Speaker 9: needs extra-rich suds, and these tiny diamonds of luxe make
- 44:09Speaker 9: thick suds in a jiffy, even in lukewarm water, whisk
- 44:13Speaker 9: away soil without rubbing. Yet, this fine product of Lever
- 44:17Speaker 9: Brothers Company is so gentle, it won't shrink wool, won't
- 44:21Speaker 9: fade colors. In fact, Anything safe in water alone is
- 44:26Speaker 9: safe in Lux Flakes. Thank you for coming tonight, Vera Miles.
- 44:30Speaker 9: Here's your producer, Mr.
- 44:32Speaker 14: Keeley.
- 44:33Speaker 11: Act Three of Deep Waters, starring Dana Andrews as Hod,
- 44:37Speaker 11: Donna Reed as Anne, and.
- 44:39Speaker 10: Anne Revere as Mary.
- 44:47Speaker 11: It's early the next morning, and Hod and Joe are
- 44:51Speaker 11: no closer to the solution of Donnie's whereabouts. But there's
- 44:54Speaker 11: one man who may be able to help them. Josh Hovey,
- 44:58Speaker 11: the shipbuilder.
- 45:00Speaker 14: Come in, boys. Come in. Now, ain't this nourishing? I
- 45:03Speaker 14: ain't seen you fellas in a dog's age. Well, what
- 45:06Speaker 14: can I do for you?
- 45:07Speaker 8: You're a very important political man, Josh. I think maybe
- 45:10Speaker 8: you'll help more than me.
- 45:11Speaker 14: Watch up, Joe. You want to run for mayor? I
- 45:14Speaker 14: thought all you was interested in was a farm.
- 45:16Speaker 8: Oh, you bet. Pretty quick. Now, you see, I get fired.
- 45:19Speaker 10: Josh. Do you suppose you could use your connections to
- 45:22Speaker 10: find out who holds the post office box in Ferriston?
- 45:25Speaker 14: Post office box, Ferriston? Yeah.
- 45:27Speaker 10: I want the name of the family holding box 317. 317.
- 45:31Speaker 14: Uh, Jenny, get me the post office in Ferriston. Let's
- 45:35Speaker 14: see now. That'd be, uh, Bill Murray. Hurry, Jenny. You
- 45:38Speaker 14: didn't fall for one of them matrimonial ads, did.
- 45:40Speaker 6: You, Hod?
- 45:42Speaker 14: Here, Joe, have a cigar. You bet.
- 45:44Speaker 8: You take one too, Hod. You can give to me later.
- 45:47Speaker 10: Let's, uh... Box number. It's supposed to be a farm, Josh.
- 45:51Speaker 10: Only a farm wouldn't have an RFD route, not a
- 45:54Speaker 10: box number, wouldn't it?
- 45:56Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, I think it would. Well, find out right now.
- 46:01Speaker 6: Hello, Bill.
- 46:02Speaker 14: Yep, Josh Hovey. Oh, I'm still alive, I guess. Say, Bill,
- 46:08Speaker 14: do you know offhand who rents box 317?
- 46:10Speaker 5: 17.
- 46:10Speaker 1: What?
- 46:10Speaker 10: What?
- 46:17Speaker 14: No. No, it's not for me, just for a friend.
- 46:23Speaker 14: I sure will, Bill. Thanks a lot. Wow.
- 46:27Speaker 1: What's so funny?
- 46:28Speaker 14: Box 317. That's the state reform school. Reform school?
- 46:33Speaker 11: Oh.
- 46:36Speaker 10: Josh, you remember Johnny Mitchell?
- 46:39Speaker 14: Johnny? Well, sure. We shipped with him, didn't we, Joe?
- 46:43Speaker 14: An old my Mitchell schooner, the Emily T.
- 46:45Speaker 10: Well, Johnny's boy is in that reform school. I want
- 46:48Speaker 10: you to help me get him out.
- 46:50Speaker 14: Well, now, it's kind of a tall order, Hod. What'd
- 46:54Speaker 14: you do with him if we did get him out?
- 46:57Speaker 10: Adopt him.
- 46:58Speaker 14: Adopt him?
- 46:59Speaker 10: Do you want to help us?
- 47:01Speaker 14: You know better than to ask that, of course. Do
- 47:03Speaker 14: everything I can. May take time, boys. I'll drop by
- 47:06Speaker 14: the island and let you know what happens. Thanks.
- 47:08Speaker 7: Thanks.
- 47:16Speaker 14: Well, I made the arrangements, Hod. The boy will get
- 47:18Speaker 14: a hearing. I may have to vote for Judge Tate
- 47:20Speaker 14: next year, but I got the hearing.
- 47:22Speaker 15: You sure good friend, George. Hey, you like a couple
- 47:25Speaker 15: rabbits for dinner sometime? I fixed for you.
- 47:28Speaker 14: Rabbits for sure.
- 47:29Speaker 10: What's the hearing, George? When is it and where?
- 47:32Speaker 14: Tuesday morning, Hod. Ten o'clock, Bellport Courthouse. It's not going
- 47:36Speaker 14: to be easy, son. That kid was arrested for stealing.
- 47:40Speaker 14: Stole a camera and sold it.
- 47:43Speaker 10: I didn't know.
- 47:44Speaker 14: He's a ward of the state. Not too good a record.
- 47:47Speaker 6: Take my advice, Hod.
- 47:48Speaker 14: Get all the people you can on your side. That
- 47:51Speaker 14: Judge Tate, he's honest, but he's a tough old customer.
- 47:54Speaker 10: Thanks, Josh. I guess the best we can do is try.
- 47:57Speaker 14: Sure like your place here, Hod. Always did envy the
- 48:00Speaker 14: fellow who owned his own island. You want to sell?
- 48:02Speaker 10: Not a chance.
- 48:03Speaker 14: Well, you change your mind, give me first bid. Well,
- 48:05Speaker 14: drop by Tuesday morning. We'll all go to court together.
- 48:13Speaker 6: This here's his courtroom, Hud.
- 48:19Speaker 14: Might as well sit down and wait.
- 48:21Speaker 10: I wonder where Joe is. He's been gone now almost
- 48:23Speaker 10: an hour.
- 48:24Speaker 14: I'm not worried about Joe. It's that girl out there
- 48:27Speaker 14: in the corridor. You got her in line, Hud?
- 48:30Speaker 10: Ann Freeman?
- 48:31Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 48:32Speaker 10: I don't know. I don't see how she could stand
- 48:35Speaker 10: in the way of an adoption, but I just don't know.
- 48:38Speaker 14: Well, we'll find out soon enough.
- 48:40Speaker 10: Here they come.
- 48:41Speaker 14: Good morning, Your Honor.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Hey, Ruby.
- 48:43Speaker 14: How are you?
- 48:43Speaker 6: Fine, fine.
- 48:44Speaker 14: Judge, I want you to meet a friend of mine.
- 48:46Speaker 14: Wonderful fellow, wonderful. Mr. Stilwell, this is Judge Tate.
- 48:48Speaker 10: How do you do, sir?
- 48:49Speaker 1: How do you do? Sit down.
- 48:50Speaker 17: Oh, you take a chair, too, Miss Freeman?
- 48:53Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 48:54Speaker 17: Is this more or less a friendly family affair here?
- 48:57Speaker 17: I don't think we need to be so formal. Miss Freeman,
- 49:00Speaker 17: if you'll come a little closer, please.
- 49:02Speaker 1: You, too, Mrs. Stilwell.
- 49:04Speaker 17: I'm sure she won't mind. No, I usually handle his
- 49:07Speaker 17: matters in my chambers, but I have the boy in there,
- 49:10Speaker 17: and I don't want to arouse any false hopes in him.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Now then, Mr. Stilwell.
- 49:15Speaker 10: Yes, sir?
- 49:15Speaker 17: According to your petition here, you're a single man. It's
- 49:19Speaker 17: rather unusual for a bachelor to adopt a child, so
- 49:22Speaker 17: you can start by giving me some of your reasons.
- 49:25Speaker 10: Well, I know this boy very well. I knew his
- 49:29Speaker 10: father and his uncle, and I'm sure I can give
- 49:32Speaker 10: him more advantages than the state reform school.
- 49:34Speaker 17: We won't go into a debate of our state institutions, sir,
- 49:36Speaker 17: which happen to have a remarkably fine record. And whose
- 49:39Speaker 17: problems I feel certain you are in no position to discuss.
- 49:42Speaker 10: I beg your pardon.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Are you financially able and prepared to care for the boy?
- 49:48Speaker 10: I think so. I'm a lobsterman. I own my own home,
- 49:52Speaker 10: my own boat. I don't have much money in the bank,
- 49:55Speaker 10: but I make a pretty good living. Am I too late?
- 49:57Speaker 8: I sent her a telegram, Hod. I've been to the station.
- 49:59Speaker 6: Just one moment.
- 50:00Speaker 1: This is a private hearing.
- 50:02Speaker 10: If you're not an interested party, madam, I.
- 50:03Speaker 8: I'd like to know who's more interested.
- 50:04Speaker 5: Donnie Mitchell lived in my house.
- 50:06Speaker 14: Why, Mary McCain.
- 50:07Speaker 8: Hello, Walter.
- 50:08Speaker 1: He'll come right in.
- 50:09Speaker 5: I didn't mean to disturb the court.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Quiet. No, not at all.
- 50:11Speaker 17: We're just discussing Mr. Stilwell's petition to adopt young Mitchell.
- 50:15Speaker 5: Well, now, why shouldn't he? It's the best thing that
- 50:17Speaker 5: could happen to Donnie. It's about time that somebody took
- 50:19Speaker 5: an interest in that boy. He's been moved around from
- 50:21Speaker 5: pillar to post.
- 50:21Speaker 6: Now, just a minute, Mary. Just a minute, nothing.
- 50:23Speaker 5: That boy's going to get a square deal if I've
- 50:24Speaker 5: got to set fire to the courthouse, and you're not
- 50:26Speaker 5: going to stop me.
- 50:27Speaker 6: Mary, if you'll just sit back.
- 50:27Speaker 5: Now, Walter, I've known you for 40 years, and I've
- 50:29Speaker 5: always liked you. But I'm warning you, if you stand
- 50:31Speaker 5: in the way of this boy getting a good home
- 50:32Speaker 5: with a man who understands him.
- 50:34Speaker 10: Keep quiet, Mary.
- 50:35Speaker 17: All I can do is hear both sides and try
- 50:38Speaker 17: to decide what's best for the boy's welfare.
- 50:41Speaker 1: I'm not opposed to the adoption.
- 50:43Speaker 8: You're not opposed to the.
- 50:44Speaker 5: You mean I came all the way from Portland for nothing?
- 50:47Speaker 17: Now, just sit down, Mary, please. I think the Welfare
- 50:51Speaker 17: Board has a right to be heard, too.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Well, Miss Freeman?
- 50:55Speaker 4: Your Honor, the Welfare Board has always felt that it
- 50:57Speaker 4: was better to raise Donnie for some inland occupation, so
- 51:01Speaker 4: we sent him to several inland farms and homes. We
- 51:03Speaker 4: were wrong. Every attempt we made to distract him from
- 51:07Speaker 4: the sea resulted in some insubordination. Hmm?
- 51:10Speaker 14: Go on.
- 51:11Speaker 4: There just seemed to be something so deep-rooted, so strong
- 51:15Speaker 4: and compelling about this calling for the sea that it
- 51:18Speaker 4: was useless to fight against it. I've tried and failed.
- 51:22Speaker 4: Donnie needs love, guidance from someone he trusts. He needs
- 51:26Speaker 4: it especially now after what he's been through. I'm sure
- 51:30Speaker 4: if given these things, he can be raised to a
- 51:32Speaker 4: good citizen in a useful and honorable trade.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Uh-huh. Then the board has a recommendation to make. What
- 51:39Speaker 1: is it?
- 51:40Speaker 4: The board recommends that the petition be granted.
- 51:43Speaker 10: Well, Your Honor, I guess that means.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Let's not jump to any conclusions.
- 51:47Speaker 17: I'm in complete sympathy with your views, but I have
- 51:50Speaker 17: a very grave responsibility. Before I can make any decision,
- 51:54Speaker 17: I must know what the boys' feelings are.
- 51:58Speaker 10: Come in, son.
- 51:59Speaker 1: Come in.
- 52:00Speaker 17: There's nothing to be frightened of now. You know these people. Well,
- 52:04Speaker 17: it seems that Mr. Stilwell wants you to come and.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Live with him. He wants to adopt you, make you
- 52:09Speaker 1: a son.
- 52:10Speaker 10: Would you like that?
- 52:13Speaker 7: No.
- 52:14Speaker 10: Donnie, don't you want to live with Joe and me?
- 52:19Speaker 10: Work on the boat every day? Be my partner?
- 52:22Speaker 7: No.
- 52:24Speaker 6: But why?
- 52:25Speaker 13: Well, I got reasons.
- 52:28Speaker 8: Excuse me, George. It's okay if I talk.
- 52:31Speaker 10: Go ahead.
- 52:32Speaker 15: Donnie, you come to live with her and Joe. And Joe,
- 52:35Speaker 15: he no buy farm. He no raise minks. He stay
- 52:38Speaker 15: with you. Every day we fish.
- 52:41Speaker 6: Okay, Donnie?
- 52:42Speaker 8: No.
- 52:43Speaker 5: Donnie, come here. Don't you like Hart anymore?
- 52:48Speaker 8: Yes.
- 52:49Speaker 5: Then why don't you want to go and live with
- 52:51Speaker 5: him and be on his boat again?
- 52:52Speaker 13: Because I went to a forum school, that's why. Because
- 52:54Speaker 13: I stole a camera.
- 52:56Speaker 10: Donnie, I didn't know that. I found out what happened.
- 53:01Speaker 13: You did?
- 53:03Speaker 6: Sure.
- 53:05Speaker 13: And you didn't care?
- 53:05Speaker 10: Of course not.
- 53:08Speaker 13: But I did it when you told me never to, Hart.
- 53:11Speaker 10: No, Donnie, you made a mistake. But you paid for it.
- 53:15Speaker 10: We all make mistakes sometimes. The important thing is not
- 53:18Speaker 10: to make them again.
- 53:21Speaker 13: Oh, Hod.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Well, folks, I guess the petition's granted.
- 53:26Speaker 7: Cast off, Joe.
- 53:36Speaker 8: Okay, where are we heading?
- 53:37Speaker 15: Home, of course.
- 53:39Speaker 14: Well, Donnie.
- 53:40Speaker 10: There's the wheel. Take us home.
- 53:43Speaker 13: Yes, sir.
- 53:44Speaker 8: But, Miss Freeman, I mean, ain't we got one too
- 53:47Speaker 8: many passengers?
- 53:48Speaker 4: Better get used to it, Joe.
- 53:49Speaker 5: I'm joining the crew.
- 53:50Speaker 7: Ha-ha!
- 53:51Speaker 8: Santa Maria!
- 53:52Speaker 7: Alas!
- 53:53Speaker 10: Santa Maria, you're not kidding.
- 53:55Speaker 13: Hey, cast off the storyline, Joe.
- 53:57Speaker 8: Okay, Skipper.
- 53:58Speaker 7: Okay!
