- 0:00Casey Fatchett: Casey. Hello and welcome to the nerdy
- 0:03photographer podcast. I'm your host, Casey Fatchett, and since
- 0:08Black Friday is right around the corner, in this episode, we're
- 0:11going to talk about having more purpose to your holiday
- 0:16endeavors instead of just racking up some credit card
- 0:20debt. Here's something, some things to keep in mind. Instead
- 0:25of just going out and like falling victim to the marketing
- 0:29machine that's just trying to hype you up, first of all,
- 0:32recognize the hype out there. You're gonna see tons and tons
- 0:38of things like 50% off, 75% off, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 0:43I'm not gonna say that. I am also not like offering discounts
- 0:48on things, you know, in our own store or our own offerings, but
- 0:51I just want you to think about this. There those things are
- 0:56designed to create, like, a fear that you're not getting the best
- 1:00you're not going to get the best deal. And you have to take a
- 1:04step back from that and analyze it and think, Is this, you know,
- 1:09be mindful in your purchasing mindset, and think, Is this
- 1:13something you actually need? Is this something you actually use
- 1:18versus, you know, you're just like, getting bombarded by the
- 1:22marketing that's telling you, like, don't miss this deal. Act
- 1:27now for to make sure to lock in your 25% off. Here's thing. If
- 1:32you don't need it, if it's not something you're going to use,
- 1:36don't purchase it. I have fallen victim to that at times where
- 1:41I've just said, Hey, oh my gosh, I can't miss out. You know, I'm
- 1:45gonna save myself $200 Well, if I'm saving myself 200 bucks, I
- 1:49also just spent, you know, 600 or whatever that I didn't need
- 1:53to spend. You know that those sorts of things, and again, be
- 1:58mindful. Think about what you really, need and are going to
- 2:03use, instead of just getting sucked up into the maelstrom of
- 2:11discounts and offers that come around the holiday season. Next
- 2:17I'm going to talk to you about like, hey, there's a way to grow
- 2:23as a photographer and to grow your business as a photographer,
- 2:27if you're running a business without spending a ton of money,
- 2:32and that's going out and practicing that is making
- 2:36connections, networking with people, building your community
- 2:40of with other photographers. Because here's the thing, if
- 2:43you're a other photographers are going to, you know, you're going
- 2:48to create a community of people who you can like count on to
- 2:52give you feedback. Or if those there are people like you're in
- 2:55business, you can find out from them. You know, how things are
- 3:00going in the industry, it's not always about getting a referral
- 3:04for a job, though. Again, that sometimes happens too, but one
- 3:09of the things that I have found very valuable is to be able to
- 3:13reach out to my community of photographer friends and be
- 3:15like, Hey, I'm noticing that things are slow this year. Are
- 3:19you experiencing the same thing. And it's not just in like, one
- 3:23particular industry, but I might ask about like, oh, you know,
- 3:26how are weddings for you this year? It asks like, 510 people
- 3:29that I know, and you know that's telling me, Oh, I'm not
- 3:33experiencing something completely different than
- 3:35everybody else. So taking that time to expand your network,
- 3:41expand your skills, either through education, which you
- 3:47know you might have to spend some money on, or, you know, hit
- 3:50up youtube University, do some search, do some purposeful
- 3:55searching for things that you know you don't have to spend
- 3:57money On, but can help improve your skills. Practice, practice,
- 4:02practice, and, you know, without, like, having to feel
- 4:08the need to, I got to spend money on gear, because gear, you
- 4:11know, it's not going to make you a better photographer. Gear will
- 4:16not make you a better photographer. So refocus on your
- 4:23own creativity as well. You make the investment with your time
- 4:28because your time is the most valuable thing that you have.
- 4:34And if you're not a professional photographer, this isn't your
- 4:37full time job, you have other things to do with your life, and
- 4:41you have to make the most of what's going on, what the time
- 4:44that you have. So investing your time in getting better, like I
- 4:49just said, you know, practicing education, building your
- 4:53community that helps your photography in itself. With if
- 5:00you're running a business again, you're improving your skills,
- 5:03you're improving your ties within the community. You're
- 5:07networking, growing your business without feeling the
- 5:10need to go out and spend 1000s of dollars on just because
- 5:14something is a deal right now. And finally, you need to build a
- 5:25mindset around your photography that's sustainable. Unless
- 5:29you're independently wealthy and you're raking in hundreds of
- 5:351000s of dollars a year, you can very easily put yourself in a
- 5:39very bad position just spending without thinking about how
- 5:43you're going to sustain this. Have a long term purpose and try
- 5:54to balance things out, instead of just like being driven by
- 5:57your impulses, because that's what a lot of this marketing
- 6:00during the holidays is about its impulse driven purchasing. It's
- 6:05again, making you fear, like you're missing out on some deal,
- 6:08some amazing deal that's it's only going to be around this one
- 6:11time. Let me tell you, there are some deals that I've I've made
- 6:16the purchase on that like got a huge return on that investment.
- 6:20I The the money was well spent, but I sat there and thought
- 6:24about like, Okay, this is something that in the long run,
- 6:28is going to make money for my business or make my photography
- 6:34life easier if I spend the money on it now, as opposed to
- 6:40thinking like, Oh, I just need to have this. I just need to
- 6:42have this. I need to have this new piece of gear because it's
- 6:4525% off right now or but I'm never going to use that lens, or
- 6:49I'm never going to use that light, or whatever the case. May
- 6:52be some accessory like, I've got a box full of accessories that I
- 6:57never used more than once, and it's just like, when I think
- 7:03back, like, if I had the money back from all those what would I
- 7:07spend it on? And probably be on educating myself more, or in my
- 7:13marketing budget, or some, in some ways, like, you know,
- 7:16there's probably 1000s of dollars that I spent on stuff
- 7:19that I really didn't need. So as we head into this marketing
- 7:27blitz that we're likely to get from all of the photography
- 7:33businesses over the next few months, just remember, take a
- 7:39step back. Think about what you really need and what's really
- 7:42going to help you. And I hope you found this helpful. I wish
- 7:47you a happy holidays. There's still gonna be more episodes
- 7:50left of the show coming up, but I wanted to get this out there
- 7:55and just try to help people. Like, just take a step back,
- 7:58take a breath and be mindful about your purchasing and until
- 8:03next time, stay safe and stay nerdy. You.
