• 0:34
Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
• 0:37
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, Miss Odie is in here
• 0:41
Speaker 4: taking photos. Sorry, so she has kind of got us
• 0:46
Speaker 4: off to a different start here. Well, first of all,
• 0:50
Speaker 4: I'd like to say I hope that both of you
• 0:52
Speaker 4: had a great holiday with your families and friends and
• 0:55
Speaker 4: all that good stuff.
• 0:56
Speaker 5: Uh, and all of our listeners the same to you.
• 0:59
Speaker 5: Uh man, there's uh, we're gonna do somewhat of a
• 1:05
Speaker 5: recap of some of the shows that we've that we've done,
• 1:09
Speaker 5: and one of the one of the interesting ones to
• 1:15
Speaker 5: me was Sterling Well hold of them. Let's let's set
• 1:18
Speaker 5: it up a little bit far as just like this
• 1:20
Speaker 5: year has been just amazing as far as the guests
• 1:24
Speaker 5: that we were able to have on It's true, true,
• 1:26
Speaker 5: I mean, just we're not going to be able to
• 1:29
Speaker 5: cover everybody, right, but just far as just from Darryl
• 1:32
Speaker 5: Talley to Kirk Warner to Sterling Sharp and Christen Mark
• 1:35
Speaker 5: just all the amazing conversations that we were able to have.
• 1:39
Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it was just so wonderful to have
• 1:42
Speaker 6: those those people, some were you know, in studios, some
• 1:45
Speaker 6: called in. But but just to have the experience to
• 1:47
Speaker 6: sit down and talk with these athletes and and and
• 1:51
Speaker 6: just that their life experiences, what they're doing now you
• 1:55
Speaker 6: know their past. You know, I just want to say
• 1:58
Speaker 6: thank you personally to both of you and Carl for
• 2:01
Speaker 6: you know, giving me the opportunity to come on to
• 2:03
Speaker 6: this this podcast. Matt Murphy, he's been a great producer.
• 2:07
Speaker 6: Dale Cooper's been nice. They b c HS has you know,
• 2:09
Speaker 6: been great to us as well, and the audience of course.
• 2:12
Speaker 6: But but yeah, this this year to me, I think,
• 2:15
Speaker 6: I think we just had some phenomenal guests.
• 2:18
Speaker 5: And you know, and one of the one of the
• 2:20
Speaker 5: and I'm going to go back to Sterling because I thought,
• 2:26
Speaker 5: how we how you think we would get guests? You know,
• 2:30
Speaker 5: everybody can kind of assume, well you probably call up
• 2:32
Speaker 5: somebody and see if they'll do come on and all
• 2:35
Speaker 5: that kind of stuff. And the interesting component about Sterling
• 2:40
Speaker 5: was he's in West He's coming through West Virginia and
• 2:44
Speaker 5: calls and says, hey, I want to be on a
• 2:46
Speaker 5: show from the Hall of.
• 2:48
Speaker 4: Fame, from the Hall of Fame Canton, right from Canon
• 2:52
  Speaker 4: being inducted.
• 2:53
Speaker 5: Yes, we we end up being his first interview outside
• 2:59
Speaker 5: of if it was a Canton, if he had an
• 3:03
Speaker 5: interview at Campton. We were the next actually interview that
• 3:08
  Speaker 5: he had.
• 3:09
Speaker 6: I mean the gold Jacket, I mean, I think he
• 3:10
Speaker 6: just took the exactly and.
• 3:13
Speaker 5: That was my first time to ever seeing one.
• 3:15
Speaker 4: And just to put it in context, you know, Stolle Sharp,
• 3:17
Speaker 4: he's not you know, he's not a visitor here. You know,
• 3:20
Speaker 4: this is somewhere he's been plenty of times. And he's
• 3:23
Speaker 4: just so gracious. He can you know, if you're watching
• 3:26
Speaker 4: him afar, he can come off one way, but he
• 3:28
Speaker 4: is a very gracious and humble person and it was
• 3:32
Speaker 4: just great to get to know him a little bit better.
• 3:34
Speaker 5: Well. And again to your point, he is really a
• 3:40
Speaker 5: nice guy and I think he works hard to try
• 3:42
Speaker 5: to come across like he might not be, but he's
• 3:45
Speaker 5: you know, again, here's a guy Who's coming to West
• 3:48
Speaker 5: Virginia State when I'm coaching and working with the players,
• 3:53
Speaker 5: like he's a coach and buying a you and buying.
• 3:56
Speaker 4: Uniforms, buying uniforms, sponsoring us when we would go to
• 4:00
  Speaker 4: Charles Southern.
• 4:02
Speaker 5: Hotel and food, I mean, who does that?
• 4:05
Speaker 4: And we're going to try to get him another Hall
• 4:07
Speaker 4: of Fame Jack here locally this year, so that that's
• 4:11
Speaker 4: in the works now, But it was just, I don't know,
• 4:14
Speaker 4: it was just so amazing to watch the ceremony and
• 4:18
Speaker 4: the inductions and then like the next Monday, he's here.
• 4:21
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 4:21
Speaker 6: It was kind of surreal, wasn't it. And You're right,
• 4:24
Speaker 6: he's got that tough persona that he likes to put
• 4:26
Speaker 6: out there, but really he would give you the shirt
• 4:28
  Speaker 6: off his back.
• 4:28
Speaker 7: I mean he is.
• 4:29
Speaker 6: He's got the kindest heart, one of the kindest hearts
• 4:31
Speaker 6: I've ever met in my life, so.
• 4:34
Speaker 5: He has said to me. And I did not know
• 4:37
Speaker 5: this at all and have never even thought about it.
• 4:41
Speaker 5: Our relationships started at the Pro Bowl and I had
• 4:45
Speaker 5: gone into Pro Bowl a year before him, and I
• 4:48
Speaker 5: was going on my second one and he was just
• 4:51
Speaker 5: coming in on his first one, and so I was
• 4:54
Speaker 5: like hey, you know, because I didn't know him personally,
• 4:57
Speaker 5: but I knew we played against them, So I was like, hey, man,
• 5:00
Speaker 5: come on with us. We're gonna go go over here
• 5:02
Speaker 5: and go do some stuff over there and all that
• 5:03
Speaker 5: kind of stuff. And to this day, I had no
• 5:07
Speaker 5: idea really that that was that impactful. Yeah, for him
• 5:13
Speaker 5: to to think and again for him to just to say, Okay,
• 5:16
Speaker 5: I'm going to the I'm gonna I'm gonna drive back
• 5:18
Speaker 5: through West Virginia. And here's the other thing. He had
• 5:21
Speaker 5: to know the time. He knew the time that we
• 5:23
Speaker 5: were gonna be on, and he got here.
• 5:27
Speaker 4: To do the show on time, to do the show.
• 5:29
Speaker 4: I'm surprised he drove. That was like, I was like,
• 5:30
Speaker 4: you're driving. I thought he would be there. But and
• 5:33
Speaker 4: I would also say like, if you're a younger listener,
• 5:38
Speaker 4: if you're a parent, were young you know people who
• 5:40
Speaker 4: liked football, man, go watch Thirling sharp football highlights.
• 5:44
Speaker 5: He was a total receiver. And I'm you're a packer family.
• 5:48
Speaker 4: Remember I'm talking about had great hands, great route running,
• 5:52
Speaker 4: could block, had acceleration. You know, he was just everything
• 5:58
Speaker 4: you looked for in a rosceiver. I mean, had he
• 6:01
Speaker 4: not got Hurt had maybe extra five or six seven years,
• 6:05
Speaker 4: we would be talking Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Sterling, Sharp
• 6:08
Speaker 4: Turrell on that that would be the you know, the
• 6:11
Speaker 4: five receivers that we would be discussed. Well, because he
• 6:13
Speaker 4: was in the he's in the he he was in
• 6:15
Speaker 4: the Rice conversation when he started coming into the wash.
• 6:21
Speaker 4: And he never really got to play with Brett Farr.
• 6:23
Speaker 4: I think they played like what one or two seasons.
• 6:25
  Speaker 4: It wasn't making it wasn't it wasn't a lot. So
• 6:28
Speaker 4: if he if he actually got to play with you know,
• 6:30
Speaker 4: Hall of Fame quarterback man, I cannot imagine where his
• 6:34
Speaker 4: numbers would be out right now.
• 6:35
Speaker 5: And I've said this before. One of the most interesting
• 6:39
Speaker 5: things to me about Sterling was him as silly as
• 6:43
Speaker 5: he can be. He's doing that on the NFL Sunday game.
• 6:50
Speaker 5: He is being that stupid, silly, crazy guy on the field,
• 6:56
Speaker 5: Like I'm sitting there, I'm locked in, I'm trying to
• 6:58
Speaker 5: cover him, and he's sitting there and he's talking to
• 7:00
Speaker 5: me like, don't worry about it. I'm not getting the ball.
• 7:03
Speaker 5: They're not they're not coming to me. It's gonna be
• 7:05
Speaker 5: a run. And I'm trying to tell my other guys
• 7:08
Speaker 5: don't talk to him, don't be around him, because he's
• 7:10
Speaker 5: gonna laugh. He's gonna laugh you into the end zone.
• 7:14
Speaker 5: And to this day, of all of the things that
• 7:19
Speaker 5: impressed me is that how do you play in the
• 7:23
Speaker 5: NFL and have that much fun in the midst of
• 7:28
  Speaker 5: a game?
• 7:29
Speaker 6: Well, he had fun with us here, so fun.
• 7:33
Speaker 5: He knows how to have love.
• 7:34
Speaker 4: Talking some some clips so you can hear a little
• 7:38
Speaker 4: bit the interview that we did.
• 7:40
Speaker 5: This dude is laughing and joking.
• 7:43
Speaker 4: He's telling us in the huddle, why y'all even in
• 7:45
Speaker 4: the huddle, y'all y'all just playing man the man in blitzing.
• 7:50
  Speaker 4: And I would I mean, I literally, I literally would
• 7:56
Speaker 4: have to tell the dvs like, don't talk to him,
• 7:59
Speaker 4: don't talk because he's gonna talk you into a touchdown.
• 8:06
  Speaker 5: Thomas would talk.
• 8:08
Speaker 8: Late, Chris Dovean's okay, they're the highlight.
• 8:16
Speaker 5: To talk to me a little bit. They're not gonna
• 8:17
Speaker 5: be on the highlight. That's gonna be us.
• 8:19
Speaker 8: And so you know, and that's the thing about enjoying
• 8:22
  Speaker 8: what you do.
• 8:24
Speaker 4: Do you think that I hate to interrupt, but do
• 8:26
Speaker 4: you think the fact that you you could enjoy it
• 8:29
Speaker 4: so much. Had a lot to do with how great,
• 8:33
Speaker 4: because I'm not gonna call it, notna call it good,
• 8:35
  Speaker 4: but how great?
• 8:35
Speaker 8: You know, I think what it is, Carl is like
• 8:38
Speaker 8: I said about the destruction of sports.
• 8:41
Speaker 5: You gotta be a certain way.
• 8:43
Speaker 8: You gotta do it a certain way, you gotta understand
• 8:47
  Speaker 8: it a certain way. And I don't know if I
• 8:50
Speaker 8: will live long enough for talk enough to be able
• 8:53
Speaker 8: to explain to people that the phrase your best is
• 8:57
Speaker 8: good enough actually is. And so when I was enjoying
• 9:02
Speaker 8: playing football at the professional level, you know, my brother
• 9:06
Speaker 8: talked trash, and his trash.
• 9:08
Speaker 5: Talking with you did I talked trash.
• 9:11
Speaker 8: But I only talk to you because, man, we got
• 9:14
Speaker 8: two and a half three hours to get through this thing.
• 9:16
Speaker 8: I want you to come out healthy. I want to
• 9:18
Speaker 8: come out healthy. You practice this week. I practiced this week.
• 9:22
Speaker 8: In certain situations, we're going to have to go up
• 9:25
Speaker 8: against each other for a pass or a block, And
• 9:29
Speaker 8: I want your best just like you want mine. Well,
• 9:32
Speaker 8: guess what, that don't make you a bad guy if
• 9:34
Speaker 8: you win. You know that, you know so I always
• 9:39
Speaker 8: wanted it to be. I'm doing what I want to do.
• 9:42
Speaker 8: If you're not doing what you want to do at
• 9:44
Speaker 8: the level you want to do it at. It's not
• 9:46
Speaker 8: my fault, and so I always tried to enjoy whether
• 9:50
Speaker 8: it was in Chicago or Minnesota or Tampa. I wanted
• 9:55
Speaker 8: to play, enjoy playing, and my best was good enough.
• 10:01
Speaker 8: I did my job better than anyone, because you only
• 10:03
Speaker 8: get an opinion if you're paying bills or you.
• 10:09
Speaker 5: Yeah, man, how great was that?
• 10:10
Speaker 4: And to that point, you know, that's probably just my
• 10:14
Speaker 4: thinking about what he said. As far as enjoying the
• 10:18
Speaker 4: sport while you have the opportunity to, that's probably my
• 10:22
Speaker 4: biggest regret, you know, being a collegiate for But I
• 10:24
  Speaker 4: don't think I had fun enough. I don't think I
• 10:27
Speaker 4: enjoyed it in the moment enough. So I think that's
• 10:30
Speaker 4: why because he talked about we asked him specifically about
• 10:34
Speaker 4: his career ending early. I think he only played seven
• 10:36
Speaker 4: or eight seasons, and he essentially had no regrets about it.
• 10:41
Speaker 4: And I think that's why, just because he enjoyed it,
• 10:43
Speaker 4: and you could just see through the conversation, you can
• 10:45
Speaker 4: feel through the conversation that you know he was genuine
• 10:49
Speaker 4: in that sentiment, and.
• 10:50
Speaker 6: I loved all his little sayings he had He always
• 10:52
Speaker 6: had this little saying like your best is good enough.
• 10:54
Speaker 6: I mean, he he had these little quotes that just
• 10:57
Speaker 6: kind of, you know, kept you, keep you grounded and
• 11:00
Speaker 6: make you realize that it's about enjoying the moment, doing
• 11:03
Speaker 6: your best, but being able to enjoy the moment.
• 11:07
Speaker 5: And I find it interesting too that he really never
• 11:13
Speaker 5: actually ever patted himself on the back for really anything.
• 11:20
Speaker 5: And he he really did change a lot what happened
• 11:26
Speaker 5: with the package when he got there, Like, I mean,
• 11:29
Speaker 5: he changed how that program was going, and he became
• 11:34
Speaker 5: like he just all of a sudden just starts showing up.
• 11:36
Speaker 5: And now you're talking about Jerry Rice and Sterling Sharp.
• 11:39
Speaker 5: You know, he's in he's starting to become that same
• 11:43
Speaker 5: name as those what we used to call the superstars.
• 11:46
Speaker 5: He was that guy, and an unfortunate piece to that,
• 11:50
Speaker 5: you know, obviously was the career ending injury, but as
• 11:56
Speaker 5: him having him here, I don't know if I could
• 12:01
Speaker 5: be more thankful, you know, to come here with He
• 12:10
Speaker 5: could have called me, Yeah, he could have done anything
• 12:12
Speaker 5: and said, hey man, what time is your show? Blah
• 12:15
Speaker 5: blah blah blah. You know I can be on it
• 12:17
Speaker 5: because I'm on my way home.
• 12:19
Speaker 4: He ain't say nothing could have gave us a superstar treatment.
• 12:22
Speaker 5: Yes he didn't. He didn't. He didn't want any of that.
• 12:25
Speaker 5: Like he just came, just showed up, popped up, sent
• 12:30
Speaker 5: in a chair, and was ready to go.
• 12:31
Speaker 4: Definitely an awesome moment. And I think, you know, the
• 12:34
Speaker 4: transition from you know, the Hall of Famer, you know,
• 12:38
Speaker 4: going to another football player again who I think embodies
• 12:44
Speaker 4: sort of the heart and probably our intent of the show.
• 12:48
Speaker 4: It's Kurt Warner, a guy who is an absolute legend
• 12:53
Speaker 4: from you know, a very rural area of West Virginia,
• 12:56
Speaker 4: who I would say probably most people don't even know
• 13:00
Speaker 4: anything about, you know, just from his time at Poneville,
• 13:05
Speaker 4: his time at Penn State, and obviously his time with
• 13:07
Speaker 4: the Seattle Seahawks being an NFL running back. You know,
• 13:12
Speaker 4: to me, this is kind of what we did. This
• 13:16
Speaker 4: why this show started was to honor guys like him.
• 13:20
Speaker 4: He has the ward named after him for the best
• 13:22
Speaker 4: high school running back. But again, most people probably just
• 13:25
Speaker 4: don't even know who he is. And I think for
• 13:27
Speaker 4: us for him to be on the show and for
• 13:30
Speaker 4: him to allow us to highlight who he is.
• 13:33
Speaker 5: Was big and to that Hollis and I want to
• 13:38
Speaker 5: thank you for even saying it that way, because Kurt
• 13:43
Speaker 5: is not you know, he's not the guy that's going
• 13:47
Speaker 5: to go out and chase any kind of attention. It's
• 13:51
Speaker 5: just not who he is. And I can remember, you know,
• 13:55
Speaker 5: meeting him at the North South and he had gotten
• 13:59
Speaker 5: you know, the the best player in the state of
• 14:01
Speaker 5: West Virginia, you know, and he was the Kennedy and
• 14:06
Speaker 5: and you know Robert, who was my Robert Alexander, who
• 14:09
Speaker 5: was my idol. He he was. There was a conversation
• 14:15
Speaker 5: about who's the best between those two, and you know,
• 14:19
Speaker 5: and you know, I was, you know, it's hard for
• 14:21
Speaker 5: me not to pick Robert. But the thing about Kurt
• 14:24
Speaker 5: was he he came, he came to me and Eddie
• 14:30
Speaker 5: ray dyas and connected with us as if we had
• 14:36
Speaker 5: been playing ball together all through high school. And and
• 14:43
Speaker 5: it was it was amazing and and and I'm going
• 14:46
Speaker 5: to tell this story. And I don't know what clip
• 14:48
Speaker 5: we might play if we if we play on a
• 14:50
Speaker 5: clip of him, but I can remember watching him the
• 14:54
Speaker 5: first day that he actually got out in the shoulder
• 14:57
Speaker 5: pads in the North South game, and he he was
• 15:00
Speaker 5: coming in he I think he came in like maybe
• 15:02
Speaker 5: like the third day and Hollis you know, I don't
• 15:08
Speaker 5: know if you've ever seen, you know, anything, any clips
• 15:11
Speaker 5: of Gael Sayers or that was the first person that
• 15:16
Speaker 5: came to my mind when I was watching him praise man.
• 15:19
Speaker 5: I was like, oh, my goodness, you.
• 15:22
Speaker 6: Knew you were witnessing greatness, right, I knew.
• 15:25
Speaker 5: I knew that. Man, I'm getting ready to play in
• 15:27
Speaker 5: the North South game with one of the best players
• 15:32
Speaker 5: ever that I've ever physically seen.
• 15:35
Speaker 4: And again, to put it in context, if you have
• 15:38
Speaker 4: not watched clips, please go watch clips of this man
• 15:42
Speaker 4: in college. Specifically, this was a guy who played at Pineville,
• 15:47
  Speaker 4: a like I think double a school in pine We're
• 15:54
Speaker 4: talking about a tiny, tiny school from Pineville, West Virginia, Mullins,
• 15:58
Speaker 4: West Virginia in that area where Christy marsh from we'll
• 16:02
Speaker 4: talk about her in a minute. But and then gets
• 16:05
Speaker 4: a full scholarship to pen Say and again Penn State
• 16:09
Speaker 4: when Penn State was pen Sate. We're talking about like
• 16:12
Speaker 4: Ohio State depending in like context. Now it's like going
• 16:16
Speaker 4: from you know, independent high school Shady Springs and you're
• 16:19
Speaker 4: going to Ohio State and being a starting running back, right,
• 16:24
Speaker 4: out of running at a shoot like I think his
• 16:26
Speaker 4: third play like took a kick off back to the house.
• 16:29
Speaker 4: I mean, we're talking about elite athleticism, jumping from the
• 16:33
Speaker 4: smallest of rural areas in West Virginia to the height
• 16:37
  Speaker 4: of the heights.
• 16:39
Speaker 6: And to accomplish all that. Hollis to your point, he
• 16:42
Speaker 6: to me when he came across as just humble. You know,
• 16:47
Speaker 6: there's nothing flashy about him. He had a conversation with us,
• 16:51
Speaker 6: it was, you know, very just like somebody you'd have
• 16:54
Speaker 6: a conversation with at a coffee shop. You know, he
• 16:57
Speaker 6: didn't let you know that he did all these great
• 17:00
Speaker 6: until you asked him. We had to question him to
• 17:02
Speaker 6: bring out all that information about what he did at Pennstad.
• 17:05
  Speaker 5: See, I be.
• 17:06
Speaker 4: Thinking, that's a problem. Got man, let it hang out. Man,
• 17:11
Speaker 4: tell us what's what it is? And and and and and.
• 17:16
Speaker 5: And you know, I think to your I get what
• 17:21
Speaker 5: you're saying, Hollins, But but people don't hear it that
• 17:26
Speaker 5: way when you say it. They just they they just
• 17:30
  Speaker 5: don't hear.
• 17:32
Speaker 4: And you know, and no, no, no, no, no, that's
• 17:36
  Speaker 4: but that's that's a great example.
• 17:38
Speaker 5: Why is it that it's okay for Dion and it's
• 17:43
Speaker 5: not okay for me. I can't if I was at it,
• 17:47
Speaker 5: but I'm just saying like it's just it's just it
• 17:49
Speaker 5: just saddens me, like we just don't know these like
• 17:53
Speaker 5: these great like giants of you know, at and athleticism
• 17:57
  Speaker 5: let me and and I didn't and I don't think
• 17:59
Speaker 5: I asked this in the show.
• 18:00
Speaker 4: Did y'all play against each other when y'all were in
• 18:02
Speaker 4: the NFL? Yes, okay, y we wish you had attack him.
• 18:07
Speaker 4: And look, we are laying on the turf laughing because
• 18:12
Speaker 4: I'm on top of him and he's down on the
• 18:15
Speaker 4: pal and he's looking at me and he is laughing.
• 18:18
Speaker 4: We are just we're laughing because we are thinking we
• 18:23
Speaker 4: went through the North South and I don't even think
• 18:25
Speaker 4: I ever tackled him at the North South game because
• 18:27
Speaker 4: I don't think, you know, probably like that.
• 18:30
Speaker 5: For the South and so and he killed the North,
• 18:34
Speaker 5: you know. And now all of a sudden, I'm we're
• 18:38
Speaker 5: in the league and I'm laying on the pal, laying
• 18:41
Speaker 5: on top of him, and he's laughing. He's laughing because
• 18:45
Speaker 5: he sees me before I even I mean, I know
• 18:47
Speaker 5: it was him, but I'm not thinking about laughing, and
• 18:49
Speaker 5: then I can't help it, but I'm laughing.
• 18:51
Speaker 4: We're sitting there laughing again NFL during a game. Two
• 18:58
Speaker 4: guys from West Virginia playing in the North South and
• 19:01
Speaker 4: we are on the football field in the National Football League.
• 19:09
  Speaker 6: For a minute.
• 19:12
Speaker 9: I mean, there's always a chip on one shoulder, uh,
• 19:16
Speaker 9: and there's you've got to have a reason to say,
• 19:20
Speaker 9: you know, I can play at this level. And I
• 19:23
Speaker 9: believe that I could play at that level from day one.
• 19:27
Speaker 9: But it wasn't just because I you know, it wasn't
• 19:34
Speaker 9: something that I thought about with regards to well and
• 19:38
Speaker 9: my second guessing what I can do and what I
• 19:42
Speaker 9: can't do. I felt as though I could play there,
• 19:44
Speaker 9: I belong there, and now it was just an opportunity
• 19:48
Speaker 9: to get out there and chill with That's really You've
• 19:52
Speaker 9: got to prove it to a certain degree because nobody's
• 19:55
Speaker 9: going to give you anything, especially at that level when
• 19:58
Speaker 9: you've got five six I mean, I remember going into
• 20:01
Speaker 9: our running back room and they had the you know,
• 20:04
Speaker 9: the guys on the board my freshman year, and there
• 20:07
Speaker 9: was like seven eight guys on that list, and I
• 20:11
Speaker 9: remember seeing that and I was at the bottom of
• 20:13
Speaker 9: the list, and it wasn't because my last name was arn.
• 20:16
Speaker 9: It said I was on the bottom of that list.
• 20:19
Speaker 9: That's thinking myself, Okay, you know what, well, when I
• 20:22
Speaker 9: get out of this camp, I'm not gonna be on
• 20:24
Speaker 9: the bottom of this list when I finish here at
• 20:26
Speaker 9: this camp. But that's what I was saying to myself.
• 20:29
Speaker 9: But I was determined not to be on that bottom
• 20:32
Speaker 9: of that list when it was all sitting done.
• 20:34
  Speaker 4: And see, that's what that's And that's the conversations I
• 20:37
Speaker 4: love to have because again he's talking his ish in
• 20:41
Speaker 4: his way when you talk about I'm big mindpower science
• 20:44
Speaker 4: and you, you know, implement those beliefs in yourself and
• 20:48
Speaker 4: it can really carry you because he could have came
• 20:50
Speaker 4: into Penn State with the same talent, the same ability, everything,
• 20:54
Speaker 4: but if he had doubt in his mind and he
• 20:56
Speaker 4: didn't believe in himself, he probably would have remained on
• 20:59
Speaker 4: the bottom of that list. And I just love stories
• 21:01
Speaker 4: like that, particularly a guy coming from West Virginia, a
• 21:04
Speaker 4: guy coming into the quote unquote big city or on
• 21:07
Speaker 4: the big stage, same thing with you and just having
• 21:10
Speaker 4: that belief above anything else, because it is the belief
• 21:14
Speaker 4: that's going to carry you not necessarily your work, not
• 21:16
Speaker 4: necessarily even your talent.
• 21:18
Speaker 5: I mean, that's part, but you gotta have a belief
• 21:20
Speaker 5: on top of all that. And I think, and I think,
• 21:25
Speaker 5: what's hard for a younger athlete to hear that clip
• 21:31
Speaker 5: and not hear it as maybe arrogant or something like that,
• 21:37
Speaker 5: and and and not see it as what it is.
• 21:41
Speaker 5: It's it's an individual confidence that you're saying that you
• 21:44
Speaker 5: knew that you could play at that level. Now you
• 21:50
Speaker 5: get you get the chance, and you do it, and
• 21:53
Speaker 5: you do it exceptionally. You didn't lie, you know what
• 21:57
Speaker 5: I'm saying, that belief. And I think most of the time,
• 22:03
Speaker 5: I think the young athlete says something, but maybe he
• 22:10
Speaker 5: doesn't believe it, and he and and if he doesn't
• 22:14
Speaker 5: believe it, he won't work.
• 22:16
Speaker 4: Hard enough to achieve it. And it resonates because this
• 22:21
Speaker 4: guy coming from where we're from.
• 22:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, and you can just hear it in his voice.
• 22:25
Speaker 6: He doesn't really raise his voice. It's just kind of,
• 22:28
Speaker 6: you know, in a monotone way. He says, you know,
• 22:30
Speaker 6: my name wasn't going to be at the end of
• 22:31
Speaker 6: the bottom of the list by the time that the
• 22:33
Speaker 6: season started. He said it in a way like that.
• 22:36
Speaker 6: That's just a matter of fact. You know, he didn't
• 22:38
Speaker 6: get overly emotional. You know, he just had a quiet
• 22:42
Speaker 6: drive about him. I think I think he didn't have
• 22:44
Speaker 6: to go out there and and and and try to
• 22:46
Speaker 6: be flashy or or say I'm the best. He showed
• 22:49
Speaker 6: he was the best.
• 22:50
Speaker 4: Honey Well, West Virginia way all the way. And that's
• 22:52
Speaker 4: and when you look him up, that's Kurt with a C.
• 22:55
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 22:55
Speaker 5: So it is Kurt and and and and it is
• 23:00
Speaker 5: and it's it's kind of shameful because we we shouldn't
• 23:04
Speaker 5: have to give out that information like people should for
• 23:08
Speaker 5: younger people for sure, But again we we we have
• 23:16
Speaker 5: we've heard our children because we have not acknowledged our
• 23:22
Speaker 5: great athletes and and kept their name alive, kept their
• 23:27
Speaker 5: success alive. We've we've failed in that category for whatever
• 23:32
Speaker 5: the reason. And I don't know if it's because you
• 23:34
Speaker 5: don't want the you don't want the athlete to get
• 23:37
Speaker 5: cocky or or whatever. But they're But but you can
• 23:41
Speaker 5: hear in in the last two clips, you hear people
• 23:47
Speaker 5: talking about their individual confidence. Yeah they're not they're not
• 23:52
Speaker 5: selling that out to the public. But you're never going
• 23:55
Speaker 5: to be able to tell me no, man, You're not
• 23:57
Speaker 5: gonna make it. Yeah.
• 23:58
Speaker 4: I think things just get lost with time and hopefully,
• 24:01
Speaker 4: and I'm glad that we had the opportunity to do
• 24:04
Speaker 4: our part in preserving that history and bringing it to
• 24:07
  Speaker 4: the masses.

Speaker 3: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's talk is
• 25:22
Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker. Real talk, real experience,
• 25:26
Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker, Law dot com. Let that conversation
• 25:30
Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
• 25:33
Speaker 4: You know, we have another athlete from that area who
• 25:36
Speaker 4: definitely got lost with time. You know when we talk about,
• 25:40
Speaker 4: you know, the great Christy Martin and you know what
• 25:43
  Speaker 4: she meant.
• 25:44
Speaker 5: Did y'all get to see the movie? Yeah? I did,
• 25:46
Speaker 5: Yeah I did, Yeah, Yeah I did. It was it
• 25:48
Speaker 5: was really really good movie.
• 25:51
Speaker 4: I think it you know far as you know, just
• 25:52
Speaker 4: got caught with maybe some bad timing as far as
• 25:55
Speaker 4: just the time of which it came out, but excellent movie.
• 25:59
Speaker 4: You know, just shows her story fighting through adversity, and
• 26:03
Speaker 4: again it's just another one coming from small town West
• 26:06
Speaker 4: Virginia and not only being a women's boxing champion, not
• 26:10
Speaker 4: only being a trailblazer, but actually just pitting the sport
• 26:16
Speaker 4: on the mountaintop, bringing like carrying that Torch for the
• 26:19
Speaker 4: Corrissa Shields and the Alicia Bumgardner and everybody else, all
• 26:22
Speaker 4: the other women who are fighting not only just boxing,
• 26:26
Speaker 4: but combat sports in general. So when you talk about
• 26:30
Speaker 4: the Holly Holmes, when you talk about Deronda Rousey's, when
• 26:32
Speaker 4: you talk about all these people, it was Christy Martin
• 26:36
Speaker 4: who brought that, who made it okay for women to
• 26:38
Speaker 4: get punched in the face on pay per views. Yeah,
• 26:44
Speaker 4: it was just like and again just to have her
• 26:48
Speaker 4: just to you know, hear her story, everything she's went
• 26:51
Speaker 4: through and everything she's overcoming.
• 26:52
Speaker 6: And we weren't thinking like she was gonna, you know,
• 27:00
Speaker 6: come in, and she was admitted about Oh no, I'm
• 27:03
Speaker 6: coming in, And You're like.
• 27:05
  Speaker 5: Wow, okay.
• 27:06
Speaker 4: It's crazy because I had I met Christy at the
• 27:09
Speaker 4: airport here, you know, in town, at Yager and I'm.
• 27:12
Speaker 5: Looking at her, I'm like, man, dang, she looks familiar.
• 27:16
  Speaker 5: I know her.
• 27:17
Speaker 4: And then she had her had her jacket on from
• 27:20
Speaker 4: her boxing promotion company. I was like, oh, yeah, that's
• 27:23
Speaker 4: Christy Martin, and I just went up and introduced myself.
• 27:26
Speaker 6: That's how you do it.
• 27:26
Speaker 5: Yeah, I straight up just was like, hey, I'm a fan,
• 27:29
  Speaker 5: you know.
• 27:30
Speaker 4: I remember watching I remember her fighting the starter on
• 27:34
Speaker 4: the Mike Tyson undercrowd. I'm like, this is from West Virginia. Yeah,
• 27:36
Speaker 4: you know that's gonna pick your interest. And again same thing,
• 27:39
Speaker 4: small town West Virginia to the mountain.
• 27:42
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 27:42
Speaker 6: And I also want to just commend her on her
• 27:44
Speaker 6: dedication to domestic abuse awareness and treatment. She took her
• 27:49
Speaker 6: personal pain and story and put it out there for
• 27:52
Speaker 6: others to see that, you know, you can get out
• 27:54
Speaker 6: of these situations. So that's a personal thing that she's
• 27:59
Speaker 6: taken to heart, and she's really working toward making you know,
• 28:03
Speaker 6: strides in in bettering that kind of situation.
• 28:07
Speaker 5: I just think, again, I just think about these these
• 28:13
Speaker 5: super superstar people that that we've had an opportunity to
• 28:18
Speaker 5: uh talk to and have on this have on the show,
• 28:22
Speaker 5: and and it amazes me how like like where are
• 28:30
Speaker 5: where are they here? How do we how do we
• 28:33
Speaker 5: keep them? How do we keep them alive?
• 28:35
  Speaker 7: Like?
• 28:35
Speaker 5: How do we keep them present? How do we keep
• 28:38
Speaker 5: them notable? I just think I just think that there's
• 28:44
Speaker 5: just we're missing something. But I don't think so.
• 28:47
Speaker 4: I mean, we're doing everybody else, but like we're definitely
• 28:54
Speaker 4: doing our part and to keeping these name alive and
• 28:56
Speaker 4: bringing them to the forefront, and like you said, we
• 28:59
Speaker 4: have them in the studio, Yo, we're telling your story.
• 29:02
Speaker 4: Hopefully we can you know, do a second round with
• 29:04
Speaker 4: a lot of these individuals. So I think we're doing
• 29:06
  Speaker 4: We're doing that.
• 29:07
  Speaker 5: I agree, I agree. I'm just I'm just I'm sitting
• 29:12
Speaker 5: over here and and and trying to trying to assess
• 29:17
Speaker 5: like why is it, why is it? Why is it
• 29:20
Speaker 5: not bigger? Why is it not why are they not
• 29:22
  Speaker 5: like why? You know, I just don't. I don't know.
• 29:24
Speaker 4: I think somebody, I think, but you know what I
• 29:26
Speaker 4: think again, from the onset, I think it was somebody
• 29:29
Speaker 4: had to do the due diligence for to east to
• 29:33
Speaker 4: like spark for to begin, and I think we've positioned
• 29:37
Speaker 4: ourselves to be that plug. I mean we we may
• 29:40
Speaker 4: not be like the biggest platform, but I think that
• 29:44
Speaker 4: from what we do, hopefully others can get a little
• 29:47
Speaker 4: something from and we can bring those individuals back on
• 29:50
Speaker 4: because I think, you know, again, I think it's easy
• 29:52
Speaker 4: when it comes to like mountain air sports, because everybody
• 29:55
Speaker 4: in their momy knows like Major Harrison, Pat White and
• 29:58
Speaker 4: Steve Slayton and Tavon ason Man, and we know all
• 30:01
Speaker 4: those guys because they're mountaineers. But if you really look at,
• 30:05
Speaker 4: you know, West Virginia sports just holistically, I mean, we
• 30:09
Speaker 4: could just go through it. You can go to the
• 30:11
Speaker 4: guys from North Fork, you can go to the so
• 30:14
Speaker 4: we have some w NBA players, We've had boxing combats
• 30:18
Speaker 4: where we have all types of stuff that I think
• 30:21
  Speaker 4: just go beyond w v U sports. So sometimes I
• 30:24
Speaker 4: think we get stuck there. But I think, you know,
• 30:27
Speaker 4: hopefully our platform and others can start highlighting everybody else.
• 30:29
Speaker 6: I was just gonna say that, Hollish, you hit the
• 30:31
Speaker 6: nail on the head. I mean, most most of these
• 30:33
Speaker 6: podcasts and platforms that have podcasts, they have a niche.
• 30:37
  Speaker 6: It's either w Sports, it's Marshall Sports. I think, I
• 30:41
Speaker 6: think what we've done, and not to toot our own horn,
• 30:43
Speaker 6: but we will. We've kind of showcased West Virginia at athleticism.
• 30:49
Speaker 6: We've brought in all the different sports and all the
• 30:51
Speaker 6: different you know, positions and and so what we're doing
• 30:56
Speaker 6: I think is unique to the state of West Virginia.
• 30:59
Speaker 5: Yeah. Well, I and to your both to your points,
• 31:03
Speaker 5: I had one hundred percent agreed, because I mean just
• 31:06
Speaker 5: going through the list of people that that we've had.
• 31:12
  Speaker 5: I mean, you know, that's a that's a those names, yeah, yeah,
• 31:16
Speaker 5: are are extremely great, not good, but great great. Even
• 31:23
Speaker 5: individuals and athletes knock.
• 31:26
Speaker 10: Someone out, you have to be willing to put yourself
• 31:28
Speaker 10: in position to be knocked out. You cannot be scared,
• 31:34
Speaker 10: you cannot have fear. You can you have to have
• 31:36
Speaker 10: the dog in you. You can talk dog all you want,
• 31:41
Speaker 10: it's got to show me. But yeah, no, I got
• 31:42
Speaker 10: up every morning early. I ran three three and a
• 31:46
Speaker 10: half miles because Angelo Dundee said, you're not a runner,
• 31:48
Speaker 10: you know, you're three miles. That's what Ali did. So
• 31:51
Speaker 10: I figured if the greatest did it, I'll be okay.
• 31:54
Speaker 10: So my little track was three point two actually, and
• 31:56
Speaker 10: then I would do sprints and then I would go
• 31:59
Speaker 10: to the gym and work about somewhere between twenty and
• 32:02
Speaker 10: thirty rounds. That was hand pads, heavy bag, shadow boxing, jumping, rope, speedback,
• 32:07
Speaker 10: all those things, and then I would go back to
• 32:08
Speaker 10: the gym inspar like three days a week. So you know,
• 32:13
Speaker 10: it was just boxing boxing. I watched fights, I watched
• 32:16
Speaker 10: my opponent. It was one hundred percent. My focus was
• 32:19
  Speaker 10: on boxing, So.
• 32:20
Speaker 5: There wasn't much time for any any like. So when
• 32:23
Speaker 5: you were off, you were probably more so watching.
• 32:26
  Speaker 6: I was never off, I really wasn't.
• 32:29
Speaker 10: I just because Donkey could call me anytime, and when
• 32:33
Speaker 10: he called, I was. Actually one time I was home
• 32:36
Speaker 10: at Christmas here in West Virginia and he called me
• 32:39
Speaker 10: on Christmas Day and told me I was going to
• 32:40
Speaker 10: fight January twelfth or fourteenth. So I wow, got in
• 32:45
Speaker 10: the car and drove back to Florida to be ready
• 32:48
Speaker 10: for the fight. The good thing was I was running,
• 32:50
Speaker 10: I was in shape.
• 32:52
Speaker 5: So because you were, you were still doing all your stuff.
• 32:55
Speaker 10: Always ready, Because how am I going to tell don
• 32:58
Speaker 10: King No, I'm not ready? You can't do that call again?
• 33:01
  Speaker 11: Right.
• 33:02
Speaker 10: So that's one thing I tell my guys. You have
• 33:04
Speaker 10: to always be ready because some major promoter might call
• 33:07
Speaker 10: me and say, hey, we need one hundred and thirty
• 33:10
Speaker 10: pounder to fight so and so because some just fell out.
• 33:15
Speaker 10: Be ready, be ready. You have to be ready. You're
• 33:17
Speaker 10: a professional fighter. That means that's your job.
• 33:19
  Speaker 6: Wow.
• 33:20
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 33:20
Speaker 4: And the golfer I was alluding to was pro am
• 33:23
Speaker 4: golfer West Virginia legend Phil pat Carter. Pat Carter, I
• 33:28
Speaker 4: want to say, pheel so bad. But Pat Carter, I
• 33:30
Speaker 4: mean and again just somebody who again, somebody who's won
• 33:34
Speaker 4: titled after title and just being a legend and golf
• 33:38
Speaker 4: with the you know, the biggest names that people may
• 33:40
Speaker 4: not know about. But he was We were lucky enough
• 33:44
Speaker 4: to have him as a guest on our show, and
• 33:45
Speaker 4: he you know, told us his story, you know, going
• 33:48
Speaker 4: to Marshall and starting you know, being a part of
• 33:52
Speaker 4: the initial class of you know, golfers down there. So
• 33:58
Speaker 4: it's just like getting those stories out is just something
• 34:01
Speaker 4: I'm grateful for for this showing this year.
• 34:04
  Speaker 5: It's it's a it's a really amazing kind of idea
• 34:11
Speaker 5: of reaching out and hearing and getting a chance to
• 34:18
Speaker 5: pull in these individuals who are from West Virginia and
• 34:22
Speaker 5: and hear their story from them. You know, because you
• 34:29
Speaker 5: you could have saw the movie, you could have read
• 34:31
Speaker 5: a newspaper article, you could have heard some things about them.
• 34:35
Speaker 5: But when they are talking, it is it is so different.
• 34:41
Speaker 5: But again, what comes across to me what I hear
• 34:45
Speaker 5: coming out of Christy's conversation again is that quiet, almost
• 34:52
Speaker 5: almost scary. She's so and she's talking like if you
• 35:03
Speaker 5: want to get in the ring, let's go.
• 35:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, like I'm telling you to really walk upon her.
• 35:08
Speaker 4: You could tell she'll give you one too. Yeah, it
• 35:10
Speaker 4: ain't really know, you know, it's no thing for And
• 35:13
Speaker 4: so are we are we discovering something in these interviews
• 35:19
Speaker 4: that are that's a common denominator with these athletes are
• 35:24
Speaker 4: being really self confident. And again, I don't care how
• 35:28
Speaker 4: it comes across to somebody. To me, I hear it
• 35:31
Speaker 4: as self confident and certain ensure of who and what
• 35:38
Speaker 4: they can do. I think with the West Virginia athletes,
• 35:40
Speaker 4: and again we've talked to like you know, Alexis Hornbuck
• 35:43
Speaker 4: and Christy and Kurt Warner, specifically with the West West
• 35:47
Speaker 4: Virginia athletes, it's not I wouldn't describe it as self confidence.
• 35:50
Speaker 4: I would describe it as just a burning belief.
• 35:52
  Speaker 5: You know.
• 35:53
Speaker 4: I think you know West Virginia's we have a natural
• 35:56
Speaker 4: humbleness to us and you know all those sort of
• 35:58
Speaker 4: West Virginia things. But specifically with the West Virginia elite
• 36:02
Speaker 4: West Virginians athletes I've talked to, it's really just a belief.
• 36:05
Speaker 4: They just believe they can do do it. And I
• 36:07
Speaker 4: think they they that beliefs come with a little bit
• 36:10
Speaker 4: of a chip just considering where they're from when they're
• 36:13
Speaker 4: competing against the world or competing against you know, the
• 36:16
Speaker 4: nation's best in whatever particular sport. So for me, what
• 36:20
Speaker 4: I've gathered is just like it's just that burning, like yeah,
• 36:23
  Speaker 4: driving belief.
• 36:24
Speaker 6: And I also think that they you know, we're a
• 36:26
Speaker 6: small state. We're not known for our professional athletes, our
• 36:30
Speaker 6: professional ball ball teams. I mean, you know, basically you're
• 36:34
Speaker 6: already I don't want to say it a disadvantage, but
• 36:37
Speaker 6: in a way, you've got to go even harder because
• 36:40
Speaker 6: you're coming from this small state and to prove that
• 36:44
  Speaker 6: you're you're you're where you should be, that you've earned
• 36:47
Speaker 6: your spot, and so that kind of contributes to their drive.
• 36:51
Speaker 6: I think just being in West Virginia makes it, you know,
• 36:54
  Speaker 6: even more special.
• 36:56
Speaker 5: So are you saying that the state itself and the
• 37:00
Speaker 5: and the and and how we function is a motivating factor,
• 37:06
Speaker 5: can be a motivating factor to the hometown athlete to drive,
• 37:12
Speaker 5: to give them the drive to want to be successful.
• 37:16
  Speaker 5: I don't know if I wouldn't say I wouldn't say that.
• 37:18
Speaker 5: I just say, like you just there's there. It's an
• 37:21
Speaker 5: example that it's possible your drive is on you and
• 37:25
Speaker 5: whatever that is for you. But it's just if you know,
• 37:29
Speaker 5: these athletes are where you're from, and in some cases,
• 37:33
Speaker 5: like a Kurt Warner, they're even like way smaller than
• 37:37
Speaker 5: if you're Charleston looked like Metropolis compared to where he's from, right, right,
• 37:41
Speaker 5: So it's just saying like, okay, they made it. It's
• 37:44
Speaker 5: maybe it's a chance that I can too, like where
• 37:46
Speaker 5: I'm from, and you know, my environment doesn't necessarily dictate
• 37:50
Speaker 5: where I can go. So it's just like and again,
• 37:54
Speaker 5: that's why I think it's important to have those you know,
• 37:57
Speaker 5: women and men on because it just serves as, hey,
• 38:00
Speaker 5: I can do that because they did.
• 38:02
Speaker 6: That, and carl you're you're an example of that. So
• 38:05
Speaker 6: did you ever feel like when you were coming, you know,
• 38:07
Speaker 6: through Marshall, through the ranks to make it to the
• 38:09
Speaker 6: NFL level, did you ever feel like at times you
• 38:12
Speaker 6: had to go like twice as hard as your teammates
• 38:14
Speaker 6: or to prove that you were you belonged.
• 38:20
Speaker 5: I to be honest, I felt like I was already going.
• 38:25
  Speaker 6: I already knew, yeah, I.
• 38:28
  Speaker 5: Had I was. I knew that I was gonna, I
• 38:30
Speaker 5: was gonna outwork that guy. You know, it didn't make
• 38:34
Speaker 5: any difference if we could be buddies all day long,
• 38:38
Speaker 5: but you're playing a position that I want to play.
• 38:42
Speaker 5: I got to beat you out. You know. I just
• 38:47
Speaker 5: have always been for me and and the method of
• 38:51
Speaker 5: my quote success has always been about who do I who?
• 38:57
Speaker 5: Who do I have to go after? Yeah, because somebody's
• 39:00
Speaker 5: going to be playing the position that I when I
• 39:02
Speaker 5: get there, somebody's going to be playing that position.
• 39:04
Speaker 6: So you were so focused on your end goal that
• 39:07
Speaker 6: you really didn't think about, you know, what you had
• 39:11
  Speaker 6: to prove.
• 39:11
Speaker 5: You know, I was, I was. I was just simply
• 39:14
Speaker 5: trying to to get I needed Hollis out of the way,
• 39:18
Speaker 5: so I needed I needed to get past him so
• 39:21
Speaker 5: that I could get in the lineup and then the
• 39:22
Speaker 5: rest will take care of itself, right.
• 39:24
Speaker 4: Speaking of another great female woman West Virginian athlete, we
• 39:30
Speaker 4: have the we got the chance to interview the great
• 39:32
Speaker 4: Alexis Hornbuckle, who I consider again, people may not consider it,
• 39:38
Speaker 4: but she's the greatest West Virginian basketball player of all
• 39:42
Speaker 4: time men women. Again, when we talk about McDonald, All
• 39:46
Speaker 4: American High School, All American Collegiate, All Americans She's won
• 39:50
Speaker 4: championships on every single level, high school, college, and pro played.
• 39:56
Speaker 4: I think some not necessarily the Olympics, but the like
• 39:59
Speaker 4: the pro the like the one of those Olympic type
• 40:02
Speaker 4: of games. I mean when you when you can sit.
• 40:05
Speaker 4: And again, won four straight championships in high school at
• 40:08
Speaker 4: two different schools. So she won two championships at Capitol
• 40:12
Speaker 4: High School, two championships at in South Charleston. I think
• 40:17
Speaker 4: one season Darnell averaged quadruple double. She was simple and
• 40:22
Speaker 4: I got to watch her first saying simply amazing athlete
• 40:25
Speaker 4: and again another testimony of like what can happen? What
• 40:31
Speaker 4: can be no matter where you're from. I mean, this
• 40:34
Speaker 4: is a nationwide ranked, you know, basketball player since she
• 40:38
Speaker 4: was a seventh eighth grade Do we have.
• 40:41
Speaker 6: A clip for her?
• 40:42
  Speaker 10: Man?
• 40:42
  Speaker 5: Oh?
• 40:43
Speaker 6: And we can hear that.
• 40:45
Speaker 4: How important was it in your early development just to
• 40:48
Speaker 4: be an athlete? Didn't kind of focusing that in to
• 40:51
Speaker 4: being a great basketball player?
• 40:55
Speaker 11: Man? It's important because you do anything, how you do everything,
• 40:58
Speaker 11: So don't it doesn't matter what I'm playing or what
• 41:02
  Speaker 11: I'm doing is I think it's a competition, which almost
• 41:05
Speaker 11: everything is to me. I want to learn it, teach me.
• 41:09
Speaker 11: I want to learn it. Now, I want to try it,
• 41:11
Speaker 11: and now I want to master it or dominate it.
• 41:14
Speaker 11: So especially in the sport world. And I'm the younger sister.
• 41:17
Speaker 11: My brother and I were fifteen months apart, so I'm
• 41:19
Speaker 11: trying to keep up with him, do what he does,
• 41:22
Speaker 11: you know, you know what I mean? And then growing
• 41:25
Speaker 11: up in the bottom and dunbar and the most of
• 41:28
Speaker 11: it's just like you can't be soft. You can't. If
• 41:31
Speaker 11: I want to play with the boys, I gotta want
• 41:33
Speaker 11: to compete and beat the boys. So yeah, it just
• 41:38
Speaker 11: came down to, like I want to beat the boys.
• 41:40
Speaker 11: I don't want to be the best girl, Like I
• 41:41
Speaker 11: want to be the best out here.
• 41:43
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 41:43
Speaker 11: So that was soccer. That was basketball, and soccer obviously
• 41:48
Speaker 11: is an advantage when it comes to conditioning, agility, right footwork,
• 41:53
Speaker 11: even court vision because an angles. If I can make
• 41:56
Speaker 11: certain passes on a soccer field, what am I going
• 41:58
Speaker 11: to do with ninety four feet to eat money?
• 42:01
Speaker 5: That's like it? So so what what?
• 42:03
  Speaker 10: So?
• 42:03
  Speaker 4: What?
• 42:04
Speaker 5: What is what is Lexus hornbook up to?
• 42:06
Speaker 4: Yeah, and again you just see again it's that that drive,
• 42:10
Speaker 4: that confidence, that that willing to do what it takes
• 42:14
Speaker 4: to be the best. Again, that's not necessarily and I
• 42:17
  Speaker 4: wouldn't say that's probably aren't West Virginia quality. That's probably
• 42:19
Speaker 4: any great athlete who wants to do anything. But I
• 42:23
Speaker 4: think it's just so important that we have those examples
• 42:26
Speaker 4: here and you're really seeing, like, look, man, if if
• 42:28
Speaker 4: you if you really want it, this is an example
• 42:32
Speaker 4: of what it can be.
• 42:32
Speaker 5: And and part of it is saying it, yeah, and
• 42:35
Speaker 5: then putting if you're gonna say it, then you're gonna
• 42:39
Speaker 5: put in the work. Yeah. And and I and I
• 42:42
Speaker 5: and I really I don't know if we have enough
• 42:48
Speaker 5: people who believe that that that that success could be
• 42:53
Speaker 5: theirs because they won't put the work in. It's it's
• 42:59
Speaker 5: it's the only piece that's holding him back.
• 43:03
Speaker 6: Well, she did say, and I caught this a couple
• 43:06
Speaker 6: of things I caught that really stood out to me,
• 43:07
Speaker 6: and I remembered it during the podcast when we replayed
• 43:10
Speaker 6: the clip. But everything is competition to me. Yes, And
• 43:13
Speaker 6: the two words that stuck out after that she said
• 43:16
Speaker 6: was dominate and master. She just didn't want to be competent.
• 43:19
Speaker 6: She wants to totally take over the game and be
• 43:22
Speaker 6: the best that's ever played the game. As a female.
• 43:25
Speaker 4: And again I think she probably was just maybe a
• 43:28
Speaker 4: tad early as far as where we're at women's basketball. Yeah,
• 43:34
Speaker 4: just a tad early. Like I said, there were obviously
• 43:37
Speaker 4: the WNBA was functioning when she was coming out of
• 43:40
Speaker 4: college in high school, but it wasn't where it's had now.
• 43:45
Speaker 4: And but I will say she went to a premiere program.
• 43:48
Speaker 4: She went to Tennessee play for Pat some Morroll. So
• 43:51
Speaker 4: it was just like I said, again, going from South Charleston, Dunbar,
• 43:55
Speaker 4: West Virginia to going to play for the premiere program.
• 43:58
Speaker 4: It's not again similar to Kurt Warner, right, You're not
• 44:01
Speaker 4: going to you know, whatever school you're going to the
• 44:05
Speaker 4: school for for that particular sport. You know, you look
• 44:09
Speaker 4: at Yukon and Tennessee and she was able to go
• 44:11
Speaker 4: to Tennessee and win championships there and going to have
• 44:15
Speaker 4: this great career. So it's just awesome to have like
• 44:18
Speaker 4: people like that. It was just awesome to interview her
• 44:21
Speaker 4: and not only just you know, tell her story, but
• 44:24
Speaker 4: also get her insight, to get that, you know, her
• 44:28
Speaker 4: mindset when it came to you know, being that kid
• 44:31
Speaker 4: and trying to you know, walk into those dreams that
• 44:33
Speaker 4: they had, So it was just awesome.
• 44:36
  Speaker 6: We've had a great year.
• 44:37
Speaker 5: Yeah, really really good year. Yeah, we've been very very
• 44:41
Speaker 5: very very very fortunate to actually have the name recognition.
• 44:47
Speaker 6: And what about and what about when we had your
• 44:49
Speaker 6: reunion you're all of the Vikings. Oh my gosh, remind
• 44:52
Speaker 6: us of that. That was that was a funven We
• 44:55
Speaker 6: who were the names?
• 44:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, he was We had Todd, Scott, Vincy Glenn, and
• 45:00
Speaker 5: I think it was Audrey McMillan.
• 45:01
Speaker 4: Okay, do we know where they went to school at,
• 45:03
Speaker 4: like colleges and oh gosh, I should know. But they
• 45:06
Speaker 4: all played for Minnesota. They all played for Minnesota.
• 45:08
Speaker 6: Yeah, that that night was a huge That was That
• 45:13
  Speaker 6: was for me.
• 45:14
Speaker 5: That was special because that was probably the first time
• 45:18
Speaker 5: that I had been on the call with all three
• 45:21
Speaker 5: of those guys at the same time. And we were
• 45:28
Speaker 5: we were fools, like I mean, we we hung out
• 45:31
Speaker 5: and we we we just had a great time. But man,
• 45:35
Speaker 5: when it came down to playing, yeah, everybody was accountable. Everybody.
• 45:42
Speaker 5: If you give up a touchdown, you're gonna hear it, right,
• 45:45
Speaker 5: you know, now you can give up you can give
• 45:48
Speaker 5: up a touchdown and you can we could say the
• 45:50
Speaker 5: D line didn't get some pressure or whatever. That don't
• 45:54
Speaker 5: matter to the group. The group is. Our goal is
• 45:59
Speaker 5: is not to give up, kept each other accountable, to
• 46:02
Speaker 5: hold each other accountable and man and to be held
• 46:06
Speaker 5: accountable and looking at a guy that you know is
• 46:09
Speaker 5: your buddy who will go go to any length for you,
• 46:14
Speaker 5: but you're accountable to him to be the best player
• 46:18
Speaker 5: on Sunday that you can be, which means you have
• 46:21
Speaker 5: to do all of the right stuff during the week.
• 46:24
Speaker 4: Yeah, and we were able to get another Minnesota Viking
• 46:27
Speaker 4: on Dante Colepepper, which was which was cool. Again, just
• 46:31
Speaker 4: a great guy, had great commentary, played with Randy Moss,
• 46:35
Speaker 4: you know, obviously connected to you through the Vikings. We
• 46:39
Speaker 4: had some great coaches on, We had great this local talent. So,
• 46:45
Speaker 4: like I said, I just think that this was just a.
• 46:47
Speaker 6: Freand Apkins from South South Carolina game Cox he's the
• 46:52
  Speaker 6: offensive line coach.
• 46:54
Speaker 5: Yeah, we've been very We've been really, really really blessed
• 46:56
Speaker 5: of the kind of people you know that we've had
• 47:02
Speaker 5: on the show, whether it be by phone and even
• 47:06
Speaker 5: even more so people who have come in.
• 47:09
Speaker 6: And I just love the fact that we've hit almost
• 47:11
Speaker 6: every area of sports. I mean we've had track stars,
• 47:14
Speaker 6: we've had football, baseball, basketball, I mean we've hit almost everything.
• 47:19
Speaker 6: The only thing I think we haven't hit. Have we
• 47:21
  Speaker 6: hit hockey, we.
• 47:24
Speaker 4: Hit bodybuilding, we hit the Yeah, because yeah, so we've
• 47:27
Speaker 4: hit And again that's another thing, just having the diversity
• 47:29
Speaker 4: where we're just not like obviously you know, football, basketball
• 47:32
Speaker 4: and big sellers. Yeah, people want to hear that, but
• 47:34
Speaker 4: just being able to have athletes across you know, the
• 47:37
Speaker 4: entire landscape of sports is pretty cool as well well.
• 47:39
Speaker 4: Because yeah, because if you're out there listening and you know,
• 47:42
Speaker 4: you're you know, you do something, whatever that thing is,
• 47:45
Speaker 4: and all of a sudden the show that you watch,
• 47:49
Speaker 4: you there's somebody on that's doing like you said, like
• 47:52
Speaker 4: to the bodybuilding or whatever. That's not something that you
• 47:56
Speaker 4: think would probably wouldn't be on the show. But now
• 47:58
Speaker 4: all of a sudden you hear in somebody and telling
• 48:01
Speaker 4: their story about what they did, how they've done it,
• 48:04
Speaker 4: and all those kinds of things.
• 48:05
  Speaker 6: It's on a deep dip.
• 48:07
Speaker 4: So who's your who's your twenty twenty six dream guests?
• 48:13
  Speaker 6: Oh that's a tough one. I would love. I would
• 48:15
Speaker 6: and hopefully the audience, if anybody knows how to get
• 48:17
Speaker 6: in contact. Carl probably does, but I have it Randy
• 48:21
Speaker 6: Moss with Yeah, I'd love to have Randy here.
• 48:24
Speaker 5: Yeah, I would love to have him in the studio,
• 48:26
Speaker 5: you know, I'm sure, Yeah he would.
• 48:27
Speaker 6: Can I have more than one because I've got a list.
• 48:29
Speaker 6: I'd love to have rich Rod. I would love to
• 48:31
Speaker 6: have rich Rod in here. I would love to have
• 48:33
Speaker 6: you know, coach coach Gibby in here. There's a whole
• 48:37
Speaker 6: list of West Virginia athletes that I admire. I'd love
• 48:40
  Speaker 6: to have.
• 48:41
Speaker 5: I think to the to your to your two coaches.
• 48:43
Speaker 5: I think I think that there could be a chance
• 48:47
Speaker 5: of getting them here. And I think one of it,
• 48:54
Speaker 5: you know, part of that is going to you know,
• 48:56
Speaker 5: it's gonna matter seasonal and all that kind of stuff.
• 48:59
Speaker 5: That's especially if we want him in studio. Who's your
• 49:03
  Speaker 5: who's your dream guests? Oh? Man, I don't well, I'll
• 49:12
Speaker 5: tell you I would. I would. I would.
• 49:16
Speaker 4: I would love to get Nick Saban. You know, we're
• 49:18
Speaker 4: talking about West Virginia guys. I would love to talk
• 49:20
Speaker 4: to Nick Saban, you know, just about you know, not
• 49:23
Speaker 4: only his journey, you know, being a West Virginia guy
• 49:26
Speaker 4: coming up Kent state and being his coaching legend, what
• 49:28
Speaker 4: he thinks of you know, we know what he probably
• 49:31
Speaker 4: thinks of current state of collegiate sports, and just and
• 49:33
Speaker 4: just being a West Virginia guy like you know, yeah,
• 49:38
Speaker 4: and also the head coach of Indiana.
• 49:40
  Speaker 5: He's a West Virginia guy.
• 49:42
Speaker 6: Jimba Fisher too. Let's just let's just do a trofecta
• 49:45
  Speaker 6: West Virginia and.
• 49:46
  Speaker 5: See and I like and see, I don't I don't
• 49:50
Speaker 5: really think. I don't really think that Nick Saban could
• 49:53
Speaker 5: be that difficult to get. I don't make it.
• 49:58
  Speaker 6: I don't well, I would say basically a wish less
• 50:04
Speaker 6: you know, it's like.
• 50:08
Speaker 5: What we want for Christmas. I think I think that
• 50:11
Speaker 5: I think that Nick Saban may have an opportunity to
• 50:16
Speaker 5: want to talk about being from West Virginia, talk about
• 50:22
Speaker 5: his success back here in West Virginia. I think, I see.
• 50:26
Speaker 5: I think some of those types of people that seem
• 50:29
Speaker 5: totally out of reach, I think they they have a
• 50:34
Speaker 5: they would love an opportunity to have to come back
• 50:39
Speaker 5: to their state and have that and have a conversation
• 50:42
Speaker 5: and talk about let's make it happen.
• 50:44
Speaker 6: And you know what, I was just gonna throw that
• 50:46
Speaker 6: the audience may have some people that they really love
• 50:48
Speaker 6: to listen to us interviews. So if you can hit
• 50:51
Speaker 6: Carle Let's talk with Carle facebook page, send a message
• 50:54
Speaker 6: to us, give us your wish less we'll see what
• 50:56
Speaker 6: we can we can do.
• 50:58
Speaker 5: And and and to that again, i'd like for you know,
• 51:01
Speaker 5: we haven't really used our Facebook page a lot for
• 51:06
Speaker 5: questions or people wanting to say, hey, could you get
• 51:10
Speaker 5: this guest or even could I be on about this?
• 51:14
Speaker 5: You know, I would like that would be my goal
• 51:18
Speaker 5: is if we could get the less Talk Facebook page active,
• 51:23
Speaker 5: and you know with not just people saying they like
• 51:27
Speaker 5: the show. We appreciate that obviously, but somebody who's interested
• 51:31
Speaker 5: in being on the show, or you have contacts to
• 51:35
Speaker 5: somebody that might be beneficial for the show as well.
• 51:40
Speaker 5: So this is our call to action.
• 51:42
Speaker 4: So if you want, if you have a wish list,
• 51:45
Speaker 4: or if you have a contact to somebody you would
• 51:47
Speaker 4: like to have us interview, make sure you hit us
• 51:50
Speaker 4: on the DM in the Facebook page. So I know
• 51:53
Speaker 4: we're about to go to we're wrapping up, so just
• 51:56
Speaker 4: moving looking forward to twenty twenty six. We got the
• 51:59
Speaker 4: college football playoffs coming up, so we have Miami versus
• 52:03
Speaker 4: Ohio State. We have Oregon versus Texas Tech, we have
• 52:06
Speaker 4: Alabama versus Indiana, and we have Old Miss versus Georgia.
• 52:10
Speaker 5: What are our picks?
• 52:11
Speaker 4: So we'll start with Miami, the Ohio State in the Cotton.
• 52:15
Speaker 6: Bowl, the Ohio State.
• 52:18
Speaker 4: I got Ohio State, all right, Thursday, January first, we
• 52:22
Speaker 4: got Oregon v Texas Tech the Capitol One Orange Bowl,
• 52:26
Speaker 4: so they'll both be traveling to Florida.
• 52:29
Speaker 6: I'm gonna have to go to Texas Tech.
• 52:30
Speaker 4: I'm going to Tech. Yeah, I'm gonna go Virginia Tech. Yeah,
• 52:35
Speaker 4: just based off of travel a long.
• 52:37
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 52:37
Speaker 4: Then we have the Rose Bowl, so this is gonna
• 52:41
Speaker 4: be in California. We got Alabama versus Indiana. So number
• 52:45
Speaker 4: nine verse number one.
• 52:47
Speaker 6: I've got to go Indiana, Go Indiana. Yeah, even though
• 52:50
  Speaker 6: Alabama scares me.
• 52:51
Speaker 4: Now that scares me. I'm gonna go West Virginia. So
• 52:55
Speaker 4: I'm gonna go Indiana as well. Gosh, now you put
• 52:59
Speaker 4: that pressure out there.
• 53:05
  Speaker 5: H Alabama, go.
• 53:09
Speaker 4: Alabama A bad Alabama, been there all right, last one.
• 53:16
Speaker 4: So we got uh in the Sugar Bowl, Old Miss
• 53:19
  Speaker 4: versus Georgia.
• 53:22
  Speaker 6: Georgia.
• 53:23
Speaker 5: I'm going to Old Miss that I want to see.
• 53:27
  Speaker 4: And I and I and I've been playing a record.
• 53:29
Speaker 4: I never root for Old Miss for a variety of reasons,
• 53:33
Speaker 4: but I want to see Old Miss get that one.
• 53:35
Speaker 4: And I think they got the chip on the shoulder.
• 53:37
Speaker 4: I think they can. I think they may be able
• 53:39
Speaker 4: to pull that off. So we'll see. Like I said,
• 53:44
Speaker 4: they played Georgia kind of ain't played in a couple
• 53:47
Speaker 4: of weeks, so we'll see.
• 53:49
Speaker 5: Sometimes that helps, sometimes it hurt. Ladies and gentlemen. We
• 53:54
Speaker 5: do appreciate you all year long being with us, and
• 53:57
Speaker 5: we hope that we can grab some more listeners and
