- 0:00Speaker 1: Had been, you know, basically told that he would be
- 0:04Speaker 1: in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was working
- 0:06Speaker 1: on his speech. He came on on a Monday night
- 0:12Speaker 1: with us and was talking about I'm already working on
- 0:15Speaker 1: the speech, and so I knew it would be powerful
- 0:19Speaker 1: and emotional. And you know, the guys meant so much
- 0:25Speaker 1: to the community, not only as a football player, but
- 0:29Speaker 1: for so many other things He's done for the community,
- 0:34Speaker 1: getting involved in a number of businesses, getting involved in
- 0:39Speaker 1: so many charity events in this area. It was an
- 0:44Speaker 1: emotional time for people here who saw not just what
- 0:50Speaker 1: he did for the football team, but what he did
- 0:53Speaker 1: for the community. You know, some people, they they elect
- 0:59Speaker 1: not to you know, they do their time there as
- 1:03Speaker 1: as a player and that sort of thing. But Drew
- 1:07Speaker 1: was a lot more than that. Always was about the
- 1:11Speaker 1: community and trying to help out in so many different ways.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And he was able to help rebuild this area after
- 1:20Speaker 1: you know, Hurricane Katrina. And I think you saw his
- 1:25Speaker 1: emotions and I think the emotion right back to him
- 1:29Speaker 1: for what he did for this area. The love for
- 1:34Speaker 1: this region, the Saints, everything else was on full display.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And it didn't surprise me one bit. Did a fantastic
- 1:44Speaker 1: job he did.
- 1:45Speaker 2: It was mighty. It was a spectacular speech. And that
- 1:49Speaker 2: doesn't surprise me that he prepped for it for basically
- 1:53Speaker 2: six months. I just thought.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Everything he preps for everything he does, and so just
- 2:02Speaker 1: you know how he's his makeup, he is as a
- 2:06Speaker 1: human being, and he you know, he's always ready no
- 2:11Speaker 1: matter what, He's ready to rule.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Mike d Mike Detilier ww L Radio, New Orleans. He
- 2:18Speaker 2: joins us on Out of Bounds. Drew Brees goes into
- 2:21Speaker 2: the Pro Football Hall of Fame. How about the fact
- 2:23Speaker 2: that he was like twenty seven years old, Mike, when
- 2:26Speaker 2: he walks in to the blank show that New Orleans
- 2:30Speaker 2: is trying to get back and get going, and at
- 2:33Speaker 2: that age he has the understanding and the leadership ability
- 2:40Speaker 2: and intangibles to jump right in, like you said, and
- 2:46Speaker 2: not just be QB one for the New Orleans Saints,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but when he could do everything he could to be
- 2:53Speaker 2: a positive impact on the community. We forget he was
- 2:56Speaker 2: almost a baby when he walked into New Orleans, right,
- 3:00Speaker 2: he was a.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Young man, And well he always teases about you guys
- 3:06Speaker 1: are getting older on me. You know, he is too
- 3:10Speaker 1: a little bit, but you know he had on doctor
- 3:15Speaker 1: Tim Finny yesterday who was the Saints team doctor. And
- 3:21Speaker 1: it was really doctor Finnie that gave the Saints the
- 3:25Speaker 1: two thumbs up to sign him, because remember that that
- 3:29Speaker 1: was a lot of hoopla because of what happened in
- 3:32Speaker 1: Miami when he went there and he funked a physical
- 3:35Speaker 1: which you would have never passed anywhere. He was just
- 3:38Speaker 1: weeks out of surgery and doctor Finnie told me yesterday
- 3:45Speaker 1: about going through all the details of the surgery and
- 3:50Speaker 1: working with doctor James Andrews on making sure that they
- 3:57Speaker 1: had a shot here that he could come back from it.
- 4:01Speaker 1: And he said the one thing that really he said,
- 4:06Speaker 1: the surgery went well, and even though it was unprecedented
- 4:10Speaker 1: at that time, the one thing he had done was
- 4:15Speaker 1: a lot of research on Drew and it was about
- 4:19Speaker 1: his determination, and he said, I knew if anybody had
- 4:24Speaker 1: a shot, it was true. And so he gave the
- 4:29Speaker 1: Saints the two thumbs up to sign him. I think
- 4:33Speaker 1: about the fact that he grew up in Texas living
- 4:36Speaker 1: none of the Texas schools recruited him. He grew up
- 4:40Speaker 1: a Texas A and m fan. They didn't offer him.
- 4:44Speaker 1: He goes to Purdue and puts up all these unbelievable numbers,
- 4:50Speaker 1: still doesn't get picked in the first round. He was
- 4:52Speaker 1: the second round pick when Greg Williams was here as
- 4:57Speaker 1: the defensive cour ordinative for the Saints. Him and I
- 5:02Speaker 1: talked for a while. He made the comment of me
- 5:05Speaker 1: that I'd still have my damn job in Buffalo for
- 5:08Speaker 1: to pick Drew Brees. He said, I had a hard
- 5:13Speaker 1: headed general manager that didn't want to pick him, didn't
- 5:16Speaker 1: feel maybe he had all the attributes that we're looking for.
- 5:21Speaker 1: He's he's beat the odds everywhere, you know, and and
- 5:26Speaker 1: it was right place, right time, right coach, right system
- 5:30Speaker 1: with him. Okay, he was the right guy for Sean
- 5:33Speaker 1: Payton in that offense and it all worked out. And
- 5:39Speaker 1: you know, sometimes we look back on things that we
- 5:42Speaker 1: do and it doesn't work out and we wonder why,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and it's, uh, you know, maybe the man upstairs doesn't
- 5:49Speaker 1: feelers do it's right for you and he moves you on.
- 5:53Speaker 1: But for Drew, he you know, he's never discouraged about
- 5:56Speaker 1: things that go wrong with him. Never, He just keeps
- 6:02Speaker 1: plodding along. And I think his determination and his love
- 6:08Speaker 1: for the game is a big part of you know
- 6:13Speaker 1: who he is and how he got to this point.
- 6:20Speaker 1: He's a coaching now his sons. He's got one son
- 6:24Speaker 1: who's a quarterback, the others are receivers. So it's like,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I don't know how that happened. But you know, he's
- 6:33Speaker 1: just a fantastic guy. And I think his motivational skills.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I think yesterday he was at Purdue giving a motivational
- 6:42Speaker 1: talk to the Parlamica football team.
- 6:46Speaker 2: They want to big. For our listeners, this is where
- 6:49Speaker 2: Mike's going. Drew Brees won a high school state championship
- 6:52Speaker 2: at South Lake, which really put them on the map.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Now we talk about that program all the time. We
- 6:57Speaker 2: didn't back in nineteen ninety seven. Then he goes to
- 7:00Speaker 2: who hasn't won but like four seasons in the last
- 7:03Speaker 2: sixty years, and he and Joe Tailler win a Big
- 7:06Speaker 2: Ten championship. And then he goes to New Orleans who
- 7:09Speaker 2: had never really won, as Mike and y'all know, and
- 7:12Speaker 2: they won a Lombardi Trophy and go to multiple NFC
- 7:14Speaker 2: championship game. He's one of the biggest winners in North
- 7:16Speaker 2: American sports. It's so.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Mike Attilier w WL Radio TV, New Orleans. He joins
- 7:25Speaker 2: us on one oh five nine to the zone. ESPN, Mike,
- 7:29Speaker 2: I want to switch gears. Lane Kiffen is raving about
- 7:33Speaker 2: three freshmen among others, but he's making a great point
- 7:36Speaker 2: in a day and age where freshmen don't.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Play along with Lamar Brown, a freshman defensive lineman, and
- 7:46Speaker 1: I think it was a big part of why coach
- 7:50Speaker 1: oseronk got hard. I think there was no doubt that
- 7:54Speaker 1: he wanted somebody to help mentor these young guys, and
- 8:01Speaker 1: he knew he needed help from them as a true freshman,
- 8:06Speaker 1: because that's the one area we've talked about that they
- 8:09Speaker 1: don't have a lot of depth. I think about Richard
- 8:13Speaker 1: Anderson and laugh all the time about it because you know,
- 8:17Speaker 1: he's from Edna Carr. He's six two and a half.
- 8:22Speaker 1: He probably played last year in the three forty five range.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I mean, he's a wide load. And so he wins
- 8:32Speaker 1: Louisiana Player of the Year and man, he comes out
- 8:35Speaker 1: all dressed stuff and three piece suit and everything, and
- 8:39Speaker 1: his coach Bryce Brown makes the comment, I didn't think
- 8:42Speaker 1: they could, you know, make a suit that big, because
- 8:47Speaker 1: that's just a huge band. He said, they got a
- 8:50Speaker 1: lot of thread on him suit. But you know, he's
- 8:54Speaker 1: the guy that I I know even before he got hard,
- 8:59Speaker 1: he had worked with Coach Oh privately, and Oh had
- 9:05Speaker 1: told me he is like eighty boy. He reminds me
- 9:10Speaker 1: of a young Cortez Kennedy. Wow, because he coached Cortes
- 9:15Speaker 1: at Miami Flora And he says, the closest thing I've
- 9:19Speaker 1: seen to Cortes as a coach for me. And then
- 9:24Speaker 1: Deuce Gerald's is a six foot and a half two
- 9:28Speaker 1: hundred and seventy five pound defensive tackle. Totally different type, built,
- 9:35Speaker 1: super quick off the snap. We'll see how well he
- 9:37Speaker 1: handles up, you know, in a much bigger lead. But man,
- 9:42Speaker 1: he's been really impressive. And then Lamar Brown, number one
- 9:47Speaker 1: raty to recruit in the state of Louisiana, number one
- 9:50Speaker 1: rated defensive lineman. I made a call with him a
- 9:55Speaker 1: couple of years back. He comes to one of the
- 9:57Speaker 1: camps and I told him, I said, you could be
- 9:59Speaker 1: a starting offensive lineman in college football today. He was like, oh, no, no, no, Coach,
- 10:07Speaker 1: I won't play defensive end. I took a good look
- 10:10Speaker 1: at him. He weighed in like two hundred eighty two
- 10:12Speaker 1: pounds that day, like man, you two hundred eighty two
- 10:16Speaker 1: pounds and they ain't a lot of defensive ends two
- 10:19Speaker 1: hundred eighty two pounds today, and he was like a nobody,
- 10:22Speaker 1: I will I want to play defensive end. Great athlete,
- 10:26Speaker 1: just just tremendous athlete. And I still feel that way
- 10:30Speaker 1: today that he could he could be a starting offensive lineman.
- 10:34Speaker 1: He's if he if that's what he wanted to do.
- 10:36Speaker 1: So he's getting them ready and I think they'll see
- 10:42Speaker 1: I don't know about starting time, but I think they'll
- 10:45Speaker 1: see extensive playing time. And you know, for the Tigers
- 10:49Speaker 1: this year, they have to because they're really paper then
- 10:53Speaker 1: up front along the defensive line. And O's also brought
- 10:57Speaker 1: up to me Tritton Henderson, who's from Florida as an
- 11:01Speaker 1: edge rusher, as a guy that he really likes h
- 11:04Speaker 1: and he also is a true freshman. So we'll see
- 11:09Speaker 1: how all that turns out. And you're right, Bough, absolutely right.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Very few guys as true freshmen can just step in
- 11:18Speaker 1: and and make that type of impact. So every once
- 11:21Speaker 1: in a while you find one. You know, Dylan Stewart
- 11:25Speaker 1: from South Carolina a few years back, true freshman, he
- 11:30Speaker 1: made an impact. But we'll see what happens up front
- 11:34Speaker 1: with him. But they're well coached. Uh uh, you know,
- 11:37Speaker 1: they they've got people that that can help develop them.
- 11:42Speaker 1: And most of the time is the physical part of
- 11:45Speaker 1: the game. Because you jump from high school to college,
- 11:48Speaker 1: it's a totally different game, especially in the SEC. You know,
- 11:53Speaker 1: there's no homecoming games here.
- 11:57Speaker 2: There's Mike Attillier talking l s U football, so it's
- 12:00Speaker 2: it's Lamar Brown and Richard Anderson and Deuce Gerald's and
- 12:06Speaker 2: they were able to go and maybe Kirby and them
- 12:08Speaker 2: didn't like his size. I don't know. He's still highly recruited.
- 12:11Speaker 2: But Deuce Gerald's from Swanne, Georgia, and Lane and Baker
- 12:17Speaker 2: and whoever were able to go in and grab him. Mike,
- 12:23Speaker 2: did that surprise you because Kirby usually can get just
- 12:27Speaker 2: about who he wants in the state of Georgia.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I knew they were in the mix, but LSU
- 12:36Speaker 1: was able to pull it out at the end with
- 12:38Speaker 1: Duce and he came in early. He was a midterm guy,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and in the spring, the upper classmen, the offensive lineman
- 12:49Speaker 1: all said, Deuce Gerald, where did he come from? Don't
- 12:55Speaker 1: look like no freshmen to me? And uh, And he
- 12:59Speaker 1: made a really really quick impact on this team. So
- 13:05Speaker 1: you know, you never know in recruiting and also to
- 13:09Speaker 1: I know, you know, money gets involved. But for most
- 13:13Speaker 1: of these young men too, they want to play right away,
- 13:16Speaker 1: right you know, they want to get in there. And
- 13:20Speaker 1: I think maybe that was the caveats. You had an
- 13:24Speaker 1: opportunity to play right away. The competition he had to
- 13:28Speaker 1: be it wasn't a long list, and so I think
- 13:33Speaker 1: that played a part in Richard Anderson. He could have
- 13:35Speaker 1: went anywhere. Same thing with Lambardy. I mean, both of them,
- 13:38Speaker 1: they could have went anywhere they wanted. But I knew
- 13:42Speaker 1: Richard would have to lose some weight and I think
- 13:46Speaker 1: he's down. He's in the three twenty range now and
- 13:51Speaker 1: so he's got i'm gonna say, twenty pounds off of him.
- 13:57Speaker 1: When I saw him back in January, you know, he
- 14:01Speaker 1: was all of three forty five. He's a huge man.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Uh young man, but he's a huge man. And when
- 14:08Speaker 1: it's younger, it's easier for you to get that weight
- 14:11Speaker 1: off than it is when you get a little bit older.
- 14:13Speaker 1: In the night, but man, he is. He was a
- 14:18Speaker 1: monster for the best program in Louisiana and Edna Carr,
- 14:24Speaker 1: he was a monster player for them. Ain't nobody running
- 14:27Speaker 1: that dem I mean, he shut that down real quick.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And uh, it's also his ability to run the field
- 14:36Speaker 1: for a big man, which a lot of times guys
- 14:39Speaker 1: can stop to run, you know, guard center guard. But
- 14:44Speaker 1: for him, he had the ability to chase you down.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And they ain't nothing scared in a three hundred and
- 14:49Speaker 1: forty pound man chasing down one hundred and eighty pound
- 14:52Speaker 1: back in the backfield.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Good grief. Mike Detilier's talking about this LSU freshman defensive
- 14:59Speaker 2: line class that both Ole Miss Mississippi State will face
- 15:04Speaker 2: and Clemson will get week one, Like what will I mean, Mike?
- 15:08Speaker 2: You could kind of frame it up like Mike Ntillier
- 15:10Speaker 2: by the way WWL Radio New Orleans on the show, Mike,
- 15:14Speaker 2: you could, I mean, whether or not LSU goes to
- 15:18Speaker 2: the College Football play they may not be the main
- 15:21Speaker 2: but they'll be a piece of the puzzle. If you
- 15:23Speaker 2: can get some pretty good production out of these three
- 15:26Speaker 2: in whatever shape, form or fashion, maybe the reason why
- 15:29Speaker 2: or if you don't, maybe the reason why they do
- 15:31Speaker 2: or don't go to the college football playoff.
- 15:33Speaker 1: You agree, Yeah, I agree, it's a good point. And
- 15:37Speaker 1: if I'm Clemson. I don't know about the others. And
- 15:41Speaker 1: I think the one thing with Oh He's he's really
- 15:45Speaker 1: preached is about rotation. That he constantly wants to rotate
- 15:51Speaker 1: eight to nine defensive linemen. His belief is that I
- 15:57Speaker 1: want my number one unit fresh for the final five
- 16:02Speaker 1: minutes of a game, because he said, you know, in
- 16:05Speaker 1: today's world where it's you know, kind of decided one
- 16:10Speaker 1: score or not, I want my top unit on the
- 16:13Speaker 1: field defensive line wise, fresh for the final five minutes
- 16:19Speaker 1: of a game.
- 16:21Speaker 2: And that that that makes sense. Mike Detillier on the show,
- 16:25Speaker 2: Mike d speaking of your friend ad oseron who's now
- 16:27Speaker 2: on Lane Kippin's staff. Did you see where he's doing
- 16:30Speaker 2: cameos now for people?
- 16:36Speaker 1: Nothing he does surprises me to day. Be honestly, nothing
- 16:44Speaker 1: he does surprises me. And so yeah, he's he's something
- 16:49Speaker 1: else with that, But he's almost like the celebrity coach. Yeah,
- 16:57Speaker 1: you know, this is unreal for guy and varied success
- 17:07Speaker 1: as a head coach, but he's become such a personality, sure,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you know, and he can meet somebody and my memory
- 17:17Speaker 1: is really good. I'm not quite as good with names
- 17:23Speaker 1: of people as as he is where I can remember
- 17:28Speaker 1: stuff differently. If he meets somebody and meets their family
- 17:35Speaker 1: and doesn't see him for ten years, he could tell
- 17:38Speaker 1: you all about him. It's amazing how his mind works
- 17:44Speaker 1: with that. And so he was approached a couple of
- 17:47Speaker 1: years back about it a by doing this and turned
- 17:50Speaker 1: it down. And then he did not know until what
- 17:56Speaker 1: a little over a month ago that he was going
- 17:59Speaker 1: to be on the staff at LSU.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Why is that? Me and Lanter buds? But what what?
- 18:05Speaker 2: Why did it take so long?
- 18:07Speaker 1: You don't have no idea of exactly why that it
- 18:12Speaker 1: took so long for that to come together. But I
- 18:16Speaker 1: knew coming out of Spring. I've been told by different
- 18:20Speaker 1: people at LSU that he was concerned a little bit
- 18:24Speaker 1: of having to play all these young defensive linemen and
- 18:27Speaker 1: that he was going to push to have coach Will
- 18:30Speaker 1: come on and help mentor these young defensive linemen. And
- 18:37Speaker 1: he goes on vacation to Cabo, and he never told
- 18:42Speaker 1: me he was headed there, but agreed to do the
- 18:45Speaker 1: show with me. And when my producer calls him, he's like,
- 18:52Speaker 1: Coach O just wants you to know that he's in Cabo, Mexico.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Like what the hell is he doing this show with before?
- 18:59Speaker 1: So that's how we started. He said, because you asked me,
- 19:03Speaker 1: I'm doing it. I'm okay, And I let him ramble
- 19:08Speaker 1: on and he went twenty six minutes doing the show.
- 19:15Speaker 1: He just rambled on. Ask him a question and he'd go.
- 19:20Speaker 1: He'd run with it and didn't tell me that anything
- 19:24Speaker 1: was going on. And the following week, the Tuesday night,
- 19:33Speaker 1: I got tipped off that he was headed to LSU
- 19:37Speaker 1: and they made the announcement Wednesday night. Okay, you know,
- 19:43Speaker 1: just the way he is, that's the count of the
- 19:47Speaker 1: way ed ed road with everything, and I'm grateful if
- 19:52Speaker 1: I've ever asked him, hey, you want to come on?
- 19:55Speaker 1: Hey what time? Just let me know, you know, and
- 19:57Speaker 1: he's ready to go, and you can ask ready
