- 0:00For over 2 decades, Inside Maine has been your trusted source for
- 0:03political analysis and candid conversations with Maine's most
- 0:07influential leaders, bringing you the issues that matter most,
- 0:10straight from the experts on 98.5 FM, AM 560, and wgan.com.
- 0:16As The Rolling Stones famously said, you can't always get what
- 0:20you want. You can't always get what you
- 0:27want. You can't always get what you
- 0:33want. And yes, we're bringing you
- 0:46exactly what you need this morning on Inside Main.
- 0:50That song means it's Aaron Shadbourne day on Inside Main.
- 0:53Thanks for joining us. And you know, I have said, I
- 0:57said it at the beginning of the year when Janet Mills was not
- 0:59running for anything. What I most was looking forward
- 1:02to was for her leaving public service.
- 1:06She's done her time. I thought she was leaving.
- 1:09Then she announced she was running for Senate.
- 1:10So we were going to have Janet again.
- 1:12And once again, there is no Janet Mills running for office.
- 1:16She is heading into the sunset for retirement.
- 1:20I haven't been on the airwaves since that announcement happened
- 1:22last week. And so here we are to to
- 1:26celebrate and commemorate the the service of Maine's current
- 1:29governor, Janet Mills. She's done.
- 1:32She's that. That's it.
- 1:32That means that we will be finished with Janet Mills at the
- 1:35end of this year. Jeremy.
- 1:37And I don't know if you've heard me say it before, but you can
- 1:40always tell when Janet Mills is running for office based on the
- 1:43content of her governor's radio addresses.
- 1:45And they're always about like, when she's running for office,
- 1:48it's about like, I did this and I delivered that, and I got this
- 1:51money for these people. And here's a favor for those
- 1:53people. And when she's not running for
- 1:54office, it's all like Maine is beautiful, like apple pies.
- 1:59I really appreciate her making yesterday George Hale day.
- 2:03I do too, but I thought that was weird.
- 2:04The topic of a radio dress. Today was Mother's Day.
- 2:07Oh, Mother's Day is great and for all mothers and mother
- 2:09figures and blah blah blah and like that was all fine and good,
- 2:11but you can tell that she's not running for anything.
- 2:13I do agree it was very classy of her to designate yesterday
- 2:17George Hale Day. George has been a radio icon and
- 2:20legend. Good friend of of our our
- 2:23station here. Good friend of mine, good friend
- 2:25of you know, I, I've been on that show a number of times.
- 2:27Gone to their studio. They let me borrow their studio.
- 2:30That's right. George has been around forever.
- 2:32And it's funny, my dad is like, George was old when I was in
- 2:34college. How old is?
- 2:35He now my dad said the same thing when he he spoke at my
- 2:38college one day and I asked my dad, you ever heard of George
- 2:43Haley? He's like, yeah, why?
- 2:44I said, oh, he spoke in my class tonight and I, I got to shake
- 2:48his hand. My dad said why he's still
- 2:49alive. Yeah, and he's in his 90s.
- 2:52This was in 1999 and my dad saying wow he's still alive.
- 2:56And so here we are all that 27 years later.
- 2:58But so congratulations to George on a great career.
- 3:01Don't love the way that he was ushered out while he was in
- 3:03Florida. They were doing some sort of
- 3:05revamp at the station. That's the thing that sometimes
- 3:07these radio companies and I won't I won't include the one
- 3:09that I'm sitting in in this criticism, although you know
- 3:12that they're listening. But but sometimes they make
- 3:15these decisions like George Hale, like what were they paying
- 3:18him too much? He probably would have done it
- 3:19for free, you know, like do it with dignity announced.
- 3:22They give him time. Just be like, oh, sorry, you're
- 3:24out. He's not really a like unless
- 3:26there had been like a reason and it doesn't seem like there was a
- 3:29behavioral problem or stat problem.
- 3:31It sounded like they just want to make changes at the station.
- 3:33You could have given him time to plan his like farewell and a
- 3:36final. And you get good viewership and
- 3:38listenership and audience engagement when you do that.
- 3:40To do it this way where they just kind of called him and said
- 3:42you're done, like it's just short sighted in my opinion.
- 3:46Well, I'm I'm glad Danny Cashman came out of retirement with his
- 3:49TV show to do a special tribute to George, which I was hoping to
- 3:54attend, but unfortunately I was not feeling well after banging
- 3:59my head really bad so I figured driving up to Bangor wasn't a
- 4:03good idea. They already taped it so it'll
- 4:05be on what? I actually was on last night,
- 4:07OK. And I think that's why Janet
- 4:10Mills ended up designating yesterday as George Hale Day.
- 4:13Got it. That makes sense, but I'm sure
- 4:15there will be plenty of clips on the the night show main YouTube
- 4:19page. OK, we'll have to go and find
- 4:21the the YouTube page so people can check that out.
- 4:24All right, so let me talk about what we're doing on today's show
- 4:26and next week's show, because this is a special.
- 4:28May is one of those special months where there are five
- 4:31Saturdays and so there are four of us who are regular host, but
- 4:34when there's a fifth Saturday, we do something different.
- 4:36And So what I'm doing is I'm going to host this week and next
- 4:40week. So if you like listening to me,
- 4:41great, I'll be back next week. If you don't like listening to
- 4:44me, well, I mean, you got two weeks that you can either suffer
- 4:48through it or go do something else.
- 4:50So here's what we're going to do, though.
- 4:52I as as Jeremy, you may remember, every year I try to
- 4:56get you to set a New Year's resolution.
- 4:58And every year you fight me on it, despite the fact that last
- 5:01year your New Year's resolution was to work on your health and
- 5:04you did. You got a primary care doctor.
- 5:06You started making investments. See, this is good.
- 5:07Good to have New Year's resolutions.
- 5:10My New Year's resolution this year was I was going to try to
- 5:14finish interviewing each of the major candidates for governor.
- 5:19I think at the time, I don't think I had Rick Bennett on.
- 5:21I've since had Rick Bennett on, but the ones I hadn't had on yet
- 5:24were Garrett Mason, Angus King, the 3rd, and Doctor Nirav Shah.
- 5:30And so I am pleased to announce that today's show, we're going
- 5:34to focus both this week and next week on gubernatorial
- 5:36candidates. And coming up at 10:30, we have
- 5:39Garrett Mason, Republican candidate for governor.
- 5:41He'll be joining us by phone. And then at 1110 in the top of
- 5:46the 11:00 hour, Angus King, the third will be on.
- 5:49So that's two of the three that I had to get done.
- 5:51And then next week, I've been told by the Shaw campaign I'm
- 5:55waiting to nail down a time, but that he's going to be on with me
- 5:58as well. So that will bring us to the
- 6:00full set of gubernatorial candidates for the primary
- 6:03having been interviewed by me. And then because we're in the
- 6:07the season close to election, if you have one on, you got to let
- 6:09them all come on. You got to give them equal,
- 6:11equal access or equal opportunity to come on.
- 6:13So I've I've reached out to all the candidates that are on the
- 6:15Democrat and Republican primaries and offered them the
- 6:18opportunity to come on inside Main.
- 6:20So we are going to be talking with a lot of gubernatorial
- 6:23candidates coming up. So today's show, we start with
- 6:26Garrett Mason, then Angus King. The third will be followed by
- 6:30Ben Midgley and Owen McCarthy. That's today show we'll take
- 6:34your calls and and by the way, if you have never texted it on
- 6:37the text line, the text line is the same number as our phone
- 6:40line here 879-9426 that's area code 207-879-9426.
- 6:46If you want to text me any of the questions that you want me
- 6:48to ask the candidates, I'll read them.
- 6:50I'll try to get them in again. 1030 Garrett Mason 11 top 11:00
- 6:54hour. We've got Angus King the third,
- 6:57then we'll have Ben Midgley and Owen McCarthy coming up toward
- 7:00the end of the show. So we'll have those for today.
- 7:03And then next week so far, we've got a pretty good line up going
- 7:07there as well. We'll have Bobby Charles,
- 7:10Jonathan Bush, Robert Wessels is confirmed, Shanna Bellows will
- 7:14be calling in. And then I believe that we're
- 7:16going to have Doctor Shaw next week as well.
- 7:19So I still not heard back from a few of them.
- 7:22If they get back to me, great. If not, no worries.
- 7:25I'm going to focus on the people on the primary ballot.
- 7:27If we have time, we'll get some of the independence on too.
- 7:29But we're we're getting close to the primary election.
- 7:32So I feel like it's time that we should be having them on and
- 7:37getting their kind of, I don't know if it's their closing
- 7:39argument, but it's their, it's their argument, their argument
- 7:41for why them, what they would do and why they should be elected.
- 7:44So text me your questions throughout the show, 879-9426.
- 7:48I'd love to hear what you think about the debates.
- 7:50There were debates this week. I can react to those.
- 7:52And I'll have time at the end of the show at the 12:30 segment to
- 7:57tell you more of my thoughts. But let's go to the phone line.
- 7:58879-9426 Looks like we've got George from Washington County.
- 8:02What's up, George? Aaron, good morning.
- 8:05I'm so happy to hear your voice on the radio.
- 8:08Yeah, do you? Do you get excited when you hear
- 8:09The Rolling Stones? Come on.
- 8:11I, I, I do every Saturday that you're on and, and I was
- 8:14thinking about, you know, when you're talking about when, when
- 8:17if WGAN were to ever fire you. I know that's never going to
- 8:20happen, but I hope if they do, they at least do it the right
- 8:25way. By by by angry mob.
- 8:28I don't think I actually work here.
- 8:29I think I just show up sometimes and they let me out here.
- 8:33Well, you used to live there, I thought.
- 8:34Yeah, I don't know if you moved, but I don't think they're going
- 8:36to let you go anywhere because you've got a great face for
- 8:39radio, my friend. I appreciate that.
- 8:42Should we do predictions? We're a month out from the
- 8:44primary. Should we quickly do them?
- 8:46I don't know. I think I will do predictions
- 8:50in. I think I'm hosting the show
- 8:52right before the primary. I'll do it that day.
- 8:54I'll do it that Saturday. I think I have the Saturday
- 8:56before the primary. And I will say I am going to
- 8:59host a special election night results show.
- 9:02So the night of the primary, the primary is what, June 9th?
- 9:08I'll do a result show that night.
- 9:09But I don't know, I don't really have predictions so much.
- 9:11I think it's, it's interesting. I'm not sure if you saw there
- 9:13have been some developments this week.
- 9:15This is a ranked choice election.
- 9:16And of course, Democrats have kind of been playing nice with
- 9:20each other because they're worried about alienating people.
- 9:232nd place voters and things are a little bit close there, so
- 9:27anyone could be the first one eliminated.
- 9:29And that's been interesting to watch them all play kind of
- 9:31nice. The Republicans until recently
- 9:34haven't given much thought to rank choice strategy.
- 9:38And most Republicans that I know prefer not to rank.
- 9:41Some of them are worried like what if I only put one bullet
- 9:44and then someone ranks the rest of them for me.
- 9:45So some of them will fill in with the all of the ranks for
- 9:47the same candidate. Others just don't believe in
- 9:50ranking. So this week, this interesting
- 9:53thing happened. In advance of one of the
- 9:56debates, Robert Wessels announced that he signed on to
- 10:01be the grassroots chair for the Jonathan Bush for Governor
- 10:06campaign. And Robert Wessels is still
- 10:09himself a candidate for governor.
- 10:10And so people are like, well, are you dropping out?
- 10:12Are you endorsing him? And he was like, no, I'm still
- 10:14running, so you should still vote for me.
- 10:16But I'm going to rank him #2 and if he beats me and he becomes
- 10:20the nominee, then I'm going to be his grassroots chair in CD2,
- 10:24which that's complicated. But I think it, you know, is
- 10:28signaling to the Wessels supporters that if you're, if
- 10:31you are going to still put Wessels first, that he wants you
- 10:33to put Bush 2nd. And so that but, but doing it in
- 10:36this way where I'm still a candidate, but I'm going to join
- 10:38the campaign team of my rival. I've never heard of that before,
- 10:41have you? I have not, but can we both
- 10:43agree that ranked choice voting will likely play a role in all
- 10:46of these races? I mean, it's like without a
- 10:48doubt, probably. I think it's going to be, I
- 10:49think it's going to be hard for anyone to get across line.
- 10:51And so then the second thing that developed after that
- 10:53happened, you saw the other Republicans saying like, oh, so
- 10:57I'm not sure what happened. And so then you had this other
- 11:02alliance that could announce to the debate.
- 11:03And I maybe it was just to make news and take over some of the
- 11:07limelight at the second debate for Republicans this week.
- 11:10But David Jones in the middle of the debate says, I've decided
- 11:14I've got an alliance with Ben Midgley.
- 11:15I'm going to rank Ben Midgley second.
- 11:17And Ben Midgley says, yeah, I'm going to rank David Jones
- 11:18second, which I think David Jones is going to get eliminated
- 11:21before Ben Mitchley. So I'm not sure it matters who.
- 11:25You know why? You know why I'm most excited?
- 11:27Because after years of people saying they didn't get how
- 11:29ranked choice voting works, I I think they finally get it.
- 11:33Aaron, you and I agree. I think the candidates are you.
- 11:39Got to play the game. It's the game, right?
- 11:40That's the way. That's the way the game's.
- 11:42Set up the candidates are now trying to embrace it.
- 11:44But I mean, I don't know, it's that dissimilar from Republicans
- 11:47for a long time didn't like the clean Elections program for
- 11:50taxpayer funded campaigns. And then you saw you've, you've
- 11:54seen increasingly that legislative candidates rely on
- 11:57the clean elections program and taxpayer funded campaigns.
- 12:00Garrett Mason famously used it in the gubernatorial campaign
- 12:03last time. Maybe I'll ask him about it when
- 12:06he comes on at at 10:30. But the I, you know, then they
- 12:11realize, all right, it's around. It's here to stay.
- 12:13If we let Democrats use it, we don't use it.
- 12:15We got to do something. So Republicans have always
- 12:17thought about like how to use ranked choice voting.
- 12:19I'm not sure they've figured it out yet.
- 12:21I'm not sure though, what I, I think and I haven't looked at
- 12:23the data. I'll have to do it during the
- 12:24commercial break. I, I'm interested to see how
- 12:26many Republicans actually rank because a lot of them don't.
- 12:30So yes, you go through the round.
- 12:32But Charles doesn't want anyone to rank.
- 12:34You saw that? Yeah, I mean, he doesn't believe
- 12:37in ranked choice voting, and that's fine.
- 12:39I mean, I personally don't mind ranking myself.
- 12:43I like, you know, if my first preference is going to not be
- 12:45counted, do I want to say, and who of the viable candidates
- 12:48could be like, sure, I'm happy if that's the system, I'll use
- 12:51it. Is it my preferred system?
- 12:52No. But if it is the rules, like
- 12:53will I rank? I rank.
- 12:55So I think people should. But if you don't want to, you
- 12:58don't have to. You can put all of your choices
- 13:00for Bobby. But if you're ranking Bobby
- 13:01Charles first, I think you and I can both agree Bobby Charles is
- 13:04going to be one of the top 2 vote getters and so he's going
- 13:06to be one of the last people standing.
- 13:08Right, easily. The real question will be him
- 13:10not going to the debates whether that will actually hurt him in
- 13:13the eyes of some folks. And I think that's to be seen.
- 13:15But I do think it was a surprising decision and also an
- 13:19interesting choice for someone who hasn't locked the race down,
- 13:22in my opinion. But.
- 13:23Well, here's what I think. I think that anyone who already
- 13:26supported Bobby Charles, they don't choose to not support him
- 13:30based on the fact that he he didn't go to the debates, right?
- 13:34He just like deprived himself the opportunity to introduce
- 13:36himself to more, more people and I think.
- 13:39He's a shocking development. That's a shocking.
- 13:41He thought though, right? Which ones did he bow out of,
- 13:43though? He bowed out of Channel 8 and
- 13:45Channel 13. He's still going to do Channel
- 13:476, which has the, I think, widest viewership.
- 13:49So he's going to the one with the most ratings.
- 13:51He did the main wire debate. I think he just looked at it as
- 13:54like, if he's there, they're all going to try to score points and
- 13:56attention by attacking him. So maybe he'll do it once, he'll
- 13:59handle it once and call it good. But yeah, I know, I think it's
- 14:02interesting because I also think he's a good debater.
- 14:04I think he would have done fine. I think he just, you know, is
- 14:07making a political calculation that why give these other guys
- 14:10the platform to try to, you know, increase their profile
- 14:15when he's kind of in the lead. But I do think you're right to
- 14:17say that I don't think he has 50% on the 1st ballot.
- 14:20So it will go. It just remains to be seen how
- 14:23much more he's able to, to do and, and, and what, what he's
- 14:30able to pull off. Because if he's, you know, like
- 14:33let's say he, he released a poll this week, which I'm not sure I
- 14:35believe that said he has 47%. Supporting him seems unlikely.
- 14:39Seems unlikely that it's that high.
- 14:40I've seen other polling that suggests it's much lower than
- 14:43that. But even if it's that, if it's
- 14:45that he starts at 47%, well, he's going to stay in first
- 14:48place and, and, and continue to be in first place because when
- 14:50people start to drop out. But if he starts at like 27%
- 14:54then it is possible that whoever is not in the lead in the first
- 14:58round could overtake him. So it'll be interesting.
- 15:02Well, I'll keep listening down here in the county.
- 15:03I'm just such a big fan. I'm so excited.
- 15:05I got to talk to you, Eric. I hope you have a good day.
- 15:07Wait, last question before you, before you, before you go, who
- 15:10do you think is leading in the Democrat side?
- 15:12Who do you think is in the in the first point position right
- 15:14now? I think it's a three-way race
- 15:16between Shenna, Hannah and Shaw at the moment.
- 15:20Shenna, Hannah. And so I did think Shenna was
- 15:21funny. She tried to say to Hannah, oh,
- 15:23I'm glad you're adopting my policy position and.
- 15:25Hannah was like. Hannah was like, I sponsored
- 15:27that bill like 30 years ago. It was, it was a really, really
- 15:30funny. You don't remember that, Aaron.
- 15:31I remember. It was good.
- 15:33Thanks for the call, George. Good to talk to you.
- 15:35Appreciate it. 879-9426 We're not going to have time for a lot
- 15:39of calls throughout the show. We will have time in the last
- 15:41segment of the day, but we will be taking your text of the
- 15:43questions you want me to ask the candidates.
- 15:45When we come back. We'll be talking to Garrett
- 15:47Mason, Republican candidate for governor, former state senator.
- 15:51He'll be joining us then, Angus King, Owen McCarthy, Ben
- 15:54Midgley. Big show today on INSIDE Maine.
- 15:56I'm Aaron Chadbourne.
