- 0:05Speaker 1: What's going on? Everyone?
- 0:06Speaker 2: Welcome in to another episode of the check Odaily. It's
- 0:10Speaker 2: Andrew de Checko here, Eagles beat reporter for insidethbirds dot
- 0:13Speaker 2: Com and we have action. Yes, that's right, Chalk three
- 0:18Speaker 2: up on the Eagles free agents scoreboard as they make
- 0:22Speaker 2: a flurry of signings. At least they agreed to these signings.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Nothing will be official until Wednesday at four pm, but
- 0:31Speaker 2: it starts with a rather large splash. They land a
- 0:36Speaker 2: cornerback two Inreek Women, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks. Now,
- 0:43Speaker 2: this is an interesting one because he agrees to a
- 0:46Speaker 2: one year, fifteen million dollar deal. So it's a little
- 0:50Speaker 2: pricier than I thought the Eagles would be willing to
- 0:52Speaker 2: do for the position. But they're demonstrating by their actions
- 0:59Speaker 2: that they wanted to fortify that position as best they
- 1:04Speaker 2: could after toggling last season between a Dori Jackson, Keilee
- 1:08Speaker 2: Ringo trading for Jacooran Bennett trading for JayR Alexander. Now,
- 1:14Speaker 2: Dori Jackson was the last man standing, but it never
- 1:19Speaker 2: quite felt like anyone cemented their spot, and I was
- 1:24Speaker 2: sort of waiting, and I'm sure a lot of you
- 1:26Speaker 2: listening were as well. For a team to really go
- 1:30Speaker 2: after that spot, and no.
- 1:31Speaker 1: One really did.
- 1:32Speaker 2: The Eagles did a nice job of camouflaging that with
- 1:36Speaker 2: extra safety help. They had the pass rush that was
- 1:38Speaker 2: really dialed in, and for whatever reason, quarterbacks just opted
- 1:43Speaker 2: not to throw at that spot. But with Rake Woollen,
- 1:47Speaker 2: who's twenty six years old, unique length at six foot three,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and he jumped a forty two inch vertical at the
- 1:55Speaker 2: NFL scouting combine ran a four to two six. So
- 1:58Speaker 2: those dimensions and measurable and testing numbers are rare for
- 2:02Speaker 2: the position. And as a rookie, he started all seventeen
- 2:06Speaker 2: games for the Seattle Seahawks, producing I think seventy tackles,
- 2:12Speaker 2: but he had six interceptions which helped him punch his
- 2:15Speaker 2: ticket to the Pro Bowl, and that interception total qualified
- 2:20Speaker 2: as tied for the league lead that season. So this
- 2:25Speaker 2: is someone who has great length. He has a nose
- 2:28Speaker 2: for the football, fifty three career passes defended. So is
- 2:34Speaker 2: something amiss. Well, anytime a player agrees to a one
- 2:38Speaker 2: year deal such as that, it's a prove it contract.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And so I look at riek onoee season. I just
- 2:46Speaker 2: outlined his tremendous rookie campaign, his play sort of tailed
- 2:51Speaker 2: off each season afterwards where there was erratic play, untimely penalties.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I thought there were times where he was reliant too
- 3:01Speaker 2: much on his athleticism and not necessarily dialed in all
- 3:06Speaker 2: the time with his technique. This season or the last
- 3:09Speaker 2: season when they won the Super Bowl, he was working
- 3:12Speaker 2: in with Josh Job, and the Seattle Seahawks actually gave
- 3:16Speaker 2: Josh Job a three year deal for twenty four million,
- 3:19Speaker 2: opting to keep Josh rather than rig Wollen. So there's
- 3:23Speaker 2: questions there. His play was uneven, although he saw one
- 3:27Speaker 2: season of stewar performance. But in Philadelphia it's a new slate,
- 3:32Speaker 2: it's a new defensive system where I think he's going
- 3:34Speaker 2: to in theory thrive. Playing with two all Pro corners
- 3:39Speaker 2: in Quinna Mitchell and Cooper dejen Vic. Fangio did a
- 3:44Speaker 2: really nice job last season disguising and eliminating some of
- 3:48Speaker 2: the tendency's teams might have had to attack that cornerback
- 3:52Speaker 2: spot by being creative. I don't know they'll have.
- 3:55Speaker 1: To do all that much this season.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Not saying Reek Wollen is a world beater by any stretch,
- 4:00Speaker 2: but he's a different type of athlete. He has good length,
- 4:04Speaker 2: as I mentioned, he's played the position previously at a
- 4:07Speaker 2: high level, and when you're playing with Quinya Mitchell and
- 4:11Speaker 2: Cooper Dejeni, yes you're going to be targeted. But I
- 4:13Speaker 2: think that he's proven that he can get his hand
- 4:15Speaker 2: on the football, use that length to narrow and tighten
- 4:18Speaker 2: those throwing windows, and this will be a spot for
- 4:22Speaker 2: him where he can use it as a springboard, and
- 4:26Speaker 2: if he maximizes his opportunity in Philadelphia, he will be
- 4:31Speaker 2: in position to cash in this time next offseason when
- 4:34Speaker 2: he goes back to the table. But I go back
- 4:38Speaker 2: to the athleticism because Rake Wollen was initially a wide
- 4:42Speaker 2: receiver in his early days at UTSA, And for those
- 4:45Speaker 2: of you who follow my draft coverage, you'll probably already
- 4:49Speaker 2: know this, but I scouted him immensely coming out of UTSA.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I followed that team very closely. I like that secondary
- 4:56Speaker 2: with Rashad Wisdom. They had Frank Harris at quarterback, Sincere
- 5:01Speaker 2: McCormick at running back, and a number of different players
- 5:06Speaker 2: that I found to be particularly fun to watch, And
- 5:10Speaker 2: so I key it in on Riek Onee, knowing that
- 5:12Speaker 2: he was just at the time a raw athlete, figuring
- 5:16Speaker 2: he was going to test well at the combine.
- 5:18Speaker 1: He did.
- 5:19Speaker 2: He was a fifth round pick of the Seahawks, probably
- 5:22Speaker 2: in large part due to pure athlete, but need some
- 5:27Speaker 2: refinement and is he pro ready well. He took the
- 5:30Speaker 2: NFL very quickly and then for whatever reason, his play
- 5:35Speaker 2: tailed off, and it's going to be up to him.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I go back to this in Philadelphia to really maximizing
- 5:41Speaker 2: this opportunity and use it as a springboard towards a
- 5:45Speaker 2: more prosperous situation for him. But these are the type
- 5:51Speaker 2: of signings that if you're a team that likes to
- 5:56Speaker 2: shop in the in the aisle of the one year
- 5:59Speaker 2: prove it type of contracts, you look for.
- 6:01Speaker 1: This.
- 6:02Speaker 2: You look for a younger player who has a certain
- 6:05Speaker 2: skill set, who's flourished at one time or another, and
- 6:12Speaker 2: has measurables that you can't teach and then you figure
- 6:15Speaker 2: the rest out later. That's a swing that you always take.
- 6:19Speaker 2: And then I think the Eagles have the coaching staff
- 6:21Speaker 2: in place and the structure in Vic Fangio, newly minted
- 6:26Speaker 2: defensive backs coach Joe Casper, cornerbacks coach Roy Anderson to
- 6:32Speaker 2: really hone in on the details and get that technique
- 6:36Speaker 2: refined so that he's playing at a more consistent level.
- 6:39Speaker 1: It's also worth.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Mentioning that Women's arrival perhaps makes it so that Cooper
- 6:47Speaker 2: Dejen could play some safety in base. Cooper Dejen last
- 6:52Speaker 2: season was outside corner and base, of course, but the
- 6:56Speaker 2: women signing gives you a little bit more of flexibility
- 6:59Speaker 2: and versatility there. I like the fit in Vic Fangio's defense.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I never want to be too strong in any endorsement.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I liked him coming out, and he flashed quite a
- 7:08Speaker 2: bit at different points in his Seattle Seahawks career. But
- 7:12Speaker 2: you always have to ask yourself, why was a player
- 7:14Speaker 2: available at twenty six years old with all of these
- 7:18Speaker 2: attributes and characteristics and signed a one year deal.
- 7:25Speaker 1: This is going to be a big year for Rieque,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and I think will be.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I don't want to speak for him obviously, we haven't
- 7:30Speaker 2: gotten the chance to speak to him yet, but I
- 7:32Speaker 2: have the sense that any young player is going to
- 7:35Speaker 2: look at this and embrace it and enter the opportunity
- 7:38Speaker 2: with almost a chip on your shoulder that you want
- 7:40Speaker 2: to go out there and prove your worth. You want
- 7:44Speaker 2: to rebound and tap back into the player that you
- 7:47Speaker 2: were earlier in your career and prosper from it. That's
- 7:52Speaker 2: the best kind of free agent that you could hope
- 7:55Speaker 2: to get, someone with something to prove, who has qualities
- 7:59Speaker 2: that it has played at a level that leaves you
- 8:03Speaker 2: wanting more. And it's hard not to look at this
- 8:06Speaker 2: young secondary with Drew mccouba entering his second season, Quinya Mitchell,
- 8:12Speaker 2: Cooper Dejen and now Riek One will see what happens
- 8:15Speaker 2: at that other safety spot. It's only March tenth, but
- 8:19Speaker 2: you can certainly see the youthful secondary of the athleticism,
- 8:23Speaker 2: the ranginess that they all possess, and Joe Casper and
- 8:27Speaker 2: Roy Anderson in this case have.
- 8:30Speaker 1: An abundance of tools to work with.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And I think if we've learned anything from watching the
- 8:36Speaker 2: Eagles operate over the last few seasons, their assistant coaches
- 8:39Speaker 2: have done a tremendous job when it comes to player development.
- 8:42Speaker 2: So you also have to bank on that and factor
- 8:44Speaker 2: that into the equation when you're bringing in free agents,
- 8:48Speaker 2: and I think in this case there's a lot of upside.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Shortly after that, the Eagles agreed to terms with tight
- 8:58Speaker 2: end Johnny Munt, who was just released by the Jacksonville
- 9:02Speaker 2: Jaguars a couple days ago.
- 9:04Speaker 1: He will be on a one year deal. But you
- 9:09Speaker 1: look at the tight end room.
- 9:11Speaker 2: We don't know yet what's going on with Dallas Goddard,
- 9:14Speaker 2: but they didn't have any players at that position, and
- 9:17Speaker 2: they looked at you. When you look at last season,
- 9:21Speaker 2: they didn't have a blocking centric tight end, and I
- 9:24Speaker 2: thought in many points of the season it was evident
- 9:27Speaker 2: and the run game suffered from it. It's not the
- 9:31Speaker 2: only reason, of course, the offensive line didn't perform to
- 9:34Speaker 2: the standard that they've set over the years, but the
- 9:37Speaker 2: tight ends left a lot to be desired in the
- 9:39Speaker 2: blocking department. Dallas Goddard included his blocking regressed. But Johnny
- 9:45Speaker 2: Munt is a blocking specialist. He's not someone who has
- 9:48Speaker 2: a rich history of catching the football. And he's been
- 9:54Speaker 2: in the league since twenty seventeen. He was an undrafted
- 9:56Speaker 2: free agent out of Oregon, signed with the Rams, spent
- 10:00Speaker 2: some time there, spent some time with the Minnesota Vikings
- 10:04Speaker 2: from twenty twenty two to twenty twenty four, and that's
- 10:07Speaker 2: actually where he overlapped with Eagles offensive coordinator.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Sean Mannion, and then he ended his.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Run of three different teams with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season,
- 10:19Speaker 2: playing in sixteen games and starting six. So I mentioned
- 10:22Speaker 2: that he's not a receiving centric tight end. He's caught
- 10:26Speaker 2: just seventy four receptions for six hundred and fifty eight
- 10:30Speaker 2: yards and four touchdowns in one hundred and fourteen games
- 10:33Speaker 2: twenty four starts. That's not going to be his forte.
- 10:37Speaker 2: His forte is going to be using his six foot four,
- 10:41Speaker 2: two hundred and forty three pound frame and really driving
- 10:47Speaker 2: defenders off the ball and adding some tenacity and attitude
- 10:51Speaker 2: to the edges there and helping free up teammates for
- 10:55Speaker 2: big plays.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Not to say that.
- 10:56Speaker 2: He won't be utilized as receiver on occasion, but his
- 11:01Speaker 2: calling card is his blocking. And when you look at
- 11:03Speaker 2: this Eagles tight end room, what were they sorely lacking
- 11:06Speaker 2: a blocking specialist? And as they look to reshape this room,
- 11:10Speaker 2: this makes a lot of sense. I actually mentioned Johnny
- 11:13Speaker 2: Mount as a free agent fit for the Eagles when
- 11:16Speaker 2: I was on earlier today or if you're listening to
- 11:19Speaker 2: depending on when you're listening to this earlier on Tuesday,
- 11:22Speaker 2: when I was on with the afternoon show Unfiltered on
- 11:25Speaker 2: ninety seven to five, The Fanatic because of the blocking prowess.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I thought Charlie Kohler would have been a nice fit
- 11:30Speaker 2: as well, because you have to do something a little
- 11:33Speaker 2: bit different and reimagine the room to add more balance
- 11:36Speaker 2: and a wider variety of skill sets.
- 11:38Speaker 1: And the Eagles have gotten off to a good start
- 11:40Speaker 1: and doing so.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Hey, I know a lot of you out there are
- 11:44Speaker 3: just like me. You either travel a lot for work

- 13:42Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 13:46Speaker 3: one and up.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Then shortly thereafter they add or they re sign an
- 13:53Speaker 2: old friend and tight end, Grant kal Katara, who signed
- 13:57Speaker 2: a one year deal.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Again. All of these deals are.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Finalized Wednesday at four pm, but Grant kaal Katerra returns
- 14:08Speaker 2: to the Eagles. And if you've read some of the
- 14:11Speaker 2: stories that I've written throughout the off season leading up
- 14:14Speaker 2: to free agency, whenever I outlined Grant kaw Katara, I
- 14:18Speaker 2: always said he would be a fine third tight end
- 14:22Speaker 2: because it was unrealistic to expect the Eagles to completely
- 14:25Speaker 2: wipe out the tight end room entirely and start from scratch.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Kal Katara is someone that it's a low risk signing.
- 14:34Speaker 2: You know each other pretty well, you know his strengths.
- 14:37Speaker 2: At this point you should and I think as a
- 14:40Speaker 2: third tight end he could be fine. You have to
- 14:42Speaker 2: know what he is, what he's proficient in, and he
- 14:45Speaker 2: is a good receiver. I would argue, having watched Grant
- 14:48Speaker 2: for a number of seasons in training camp, he arguably
- 14:51Speaker 2: has the best set of hands on the team. He's
- 14:54Speaker 2: certainly up there, but he's not utilized all that much.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And when he was the second when he was the
- 15:03Speaker 2: second tight end for the Eagles, which he was for
- 15:05Speaker 2: the last two seasons before that, it was Jack Stole
- 15:08Speaker 2: and Grant Kakata was the number three tight end. Grant's
- 15:13Speaker 2: always caught forty two passes and has two touchdowns. He's
- 15:18Speaker 2: sparsely utilized on offense though he played he played last
- 15:22Speaker 2: season quite a bit. But I think as a third
- 15:25Speaker 2: tight end who can play on special teams and he's
- 15:30Speaker 2: a competent pass catcher. Jalen Hurts looked his way quite
- 15:33Speaker 2: a bit in training camp. For what it's worth, you
- 15:36Speaker 2: could do a lot worse. And now you have two
- 15:39Speaker 2: players in that tight end room when you had zero.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Well, if you don't forget EJ.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Jenkins and Jahem Bell, and I think that's just a
- 15:48Speaker 2: low risk signing worst case scenario. If I mean, I
- 15:52Speaker 2: assume the Eagles are going to draft the tight end,
- 15:54Speaker 2: We'll see what else they do.
- 15:56Speaker 1: If you don't see what you need from Grant, or
- 15:58Speaker 1: you don't necessarily have a role for him, or you're
- 16:01Speaker 1: not seeing something that maybe you wanted to see him
- 16:05Speaker 1: tap into or develop, well then you move on.
- 16:08Speaker 2: But this there's no harm to this signing, and I
- 16:12Speaker 2: think the familiarity there is between on both sides probably
- 16:18Speaker 2: played a big factor in it. Good guy in the
- 16:20Speaker 2: locker room, respected on and off the.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Field, and in that building as well.
- 16:27Speaker 2: And I know there's a lot of outside angst when
- 16:30Speaker 2: it comes to Grant Cokatara, but in a different role,
- 16:35Speaker 2: I think will be fine and I don't necessarily fault
- 16:38Speaker 2: him for.
- 16:38Speaker 1: His blocking.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Is blocking flaws because he was put in a position
- 16:46Speaker 2: that doesn't accentuate what he does well. In that instance,
- 16:50Speaker 2: that comes down to coaching, because if he's not proficient
- 16:54Speaker 2: at something and you keep putting him out there, you're
- 16:57Speaker 2: setting the player up to fail, and you're setting the
- 17:00Speaker 2: offense up to fail. And so in a specific role,
- 17:07Speaker 2: I think grand k Katara is just fine and he
- 17:09Speaker 2: certainly won't break the bank to bring him in there.
- 17:13Speaker 1: So the room has a couple more bodies.
- 17:15Speaker 2: They added a cornerback in Riek Woman, who I believe.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Is was the best option out there.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Cam Taylor Britt was a player that I mentioned a
- 17:26Speaker 2: lot because I believe that he wasn't going to cost
- 17:29Speaker 2: the time to bring him in. But the Eagles surprised
- 17:32Speaker 2: me a little bit here and they ponied up a
- 17:34Speaker 2: little bit for a cornerback, and I understand that they
- 17:39Speaker 2: it could have been an exception because of the age,
- 17:42Speaker 2: the profile, the.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Previous demonstrated performance.
- 17:48Speaker 2: And he may only be here for a little while,
- 17:52Speaker 2: one way or the other, because if he doesn't play well,
- 17:55Speaker 2: he won't be back. But if he does play well,
- 17:57Speaker 2: he could And I don't want to get too far
- 17:59Speaker 2: ahead of ourselves here. The reality of the contract though,
- 18:02Speaker 2: suggests that he could play himself out of the Eagles
- 18:06Speaker 2: budget next offseason and really help himself.
- 18:09Speaker 1: With a rebound year.
- 18:12Speaker 2: And I can't emphasize enough how much it means to
- 18:16Speaker 2: have a clean slate, learn a new set of coaches,
- 18:20Speaker 2: to learn a new set of coaches and have them
- 18:23Speaker 2: learn you, and maybe they find different ways to accentuate
- 18:28Speaker 2: what you do well and really tap into that. There's
- 18:32Speaker 2: a lot of intrigue here from my perspective, because of
- 18:35Speaker 2: the Eagles coaches who are going to be working with
- 18:38Speaker 2: rike women and the surrounding talent that he'll be working with.
- 18:42Speaker 2: He's certainly going to see the football a lot because
- 18:45Speaker 2: teams tend to avoid Quinnon and Cooper.
- 18:48Speaker 1: But as I've outlined, Wollen.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Has a tendency to make a play, make a lot
- 18:54Speaker 2: of plays on the football, as evidenced with his fifty
- 18:57Speaker 2: three pass breakups and twelve career interners interceptions. So there's
- 19:03Speaker 2: a lot of upside to this signing. How it all
- 19:05Speaker 2: pans out, We're gonna have to wait and see. But
- 19:08Speaker 2: I think if you're someone who was a little apprehensive
- 19:11Speaker 2: about the Eagles after not doing a ton and being
- 19:15Speaker 2: inactive on the first day of legal tampering, hopefully this
- 19:18Speaker 2: quells some of the concerns you may have had. Although
- 19:22Speaker 2: it's important to reemphasize that Howie Roseman.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Shared his plan for free agency.
- 19:30Speaker 2: If you listened after the season and a season ending
- 19:32Speaker 2: press are at the combine, he was very transparent with
- 19:35Speaker 2: his plans, knowing that it was going to be tough
- 19:37Speaker 2: to retain a lot of these guys and how important
- 19:40Speaker 2: it is to make sure.
- 19:42Speaker 1: That you're committing to your younger your younger.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Nucleus, that you're gonna have to dole out a considerable
- 19:48Speaker 2: amount to make sure that you keep them in the
- 19:50Speaker 2: building and then you're able to build your team for
